Insider tips for a sizzling season Nothing is more disappointing than trying to grill that perfect steak when your barbecue just won’t heat up and cook the way it used to.

To avoid this, the grilling experts at Broil King offer some helpful tips to get your gas barbecue ready for the season ahead. Here is their advice: Give your grill a good cleaning Begin by removing the cooking grids, grates and burners from your grill.

Brush the inside of the oven with a sturdy bristle brush to remove the build-up of grease. Using a grill cleaner, scrub the inside and outside of the oven and then rinse with water. Never use oven cleaner on your grill since it is corrosive and can damage the other components.

Check for leaks Inspect the gas hose to make sure there aren’t any cracks or leaks. This can easily be done by preparing a soapy solution and applying it to the connections at the tank and valve. Turn the tank on slowly and watch for bubbles to form,

Season your grids Check the cooking grids to make sure no welds are broken and brush off any stuck on residue. If you have cast iron cooking grids, season them with oil to keep food from sticking and to help prevent rust.

Maintain the little things Finally, check the condition of your control knobs, thermometer and handles. Replacing small items like this can refresh your gas barbecue and make it look new again.

Taking a bit of time each season to clean and inspect the gas barbecue will prolong its life and will ensure it is reliable for another great barbecue season.

What triggers migraines?

A common type of headache characterized by throbbing pain on one side of the head, migraines affect millions of people across the globe. Many people who suffer from migraine headaches get a warning that one is coming on.

That warning manifests itself in a series of symptoms known as an aura, a group of vision disturbances. In addition, migraine sufferers may experience nausea, sensitivity to light and vomiting.

While such symptoms are well known among migraine sufferers or those closest to them, what exactly triggers these painful headaches is less widely known. According to the United States National Library of Medicine, migraines may be triggered by the following factors: • Loud noises or bright lights • Alcohol • Stress or anxiety • Smoking • Caffeine withdrawal • Changes in hormone levels during the menstrual cycle or changes triggered by the use of birth control pills (migraines occur more often in women than men) • Missed meals • Changes in sleep patterns

• Certain foods, including those that contain monosodium glutamate, or MSG; baked goods; chocolate; nuts; peanut butter; dairy products; onions; foods containing tyramine, including red wine, aged cheese, smoked fish, and certain beans; and certain fruits, including avocado, banana and citrus fruits.

Contrary to popular belief, migraine headaches are not a byproduct of brain tumors or other serious medical problems. That misconception likely stems from the similarity of certain symptoms of a migraine to symptoms of brain tumors and other serious ailments. Tree inspections reveal effects of severe winter weather The lasting effects of the severe winter weather on trees and shrubs are becoming more apparent as new foliage emerges. Now is the perfect time to get outdoors, enjoy the spring weather and inspect your plants for damage or distress and plan for remedial measures.

What are the signs of trouble?

Chris Ahlum of Ahlum & Arbor Tree Preservation encourages property owners to take a close look at their landscape for obvious problems like dead or hanging branches, weak branch attachments or offcolor foliage.

“If homeowners spot troubling symptoms, an ISA Certified Arborist from Ahlum & Arbor will gladly come out and consult on specific maintenance and safety issues,” said Ahlum.

Ahlum & Arbor recommends looking for the following issues: 1. Dead branches As new leaves emerge in spring, it’s easy to see which tree branches or shrubs are not leafing out. Take a careful look at each plant to note which branches are dead and need to be pruned. The extreme cold took a toll on the less hardy shrub species and entire plants or hedges may need to be replaced.

2. Broken or weakened branches Many tree branches were broken or weakened due to the combined effects of ice, high winds and heavy snow. Note any branches that are broken and hanging or

splits along branches or trunks. Weakened branches can give way at any time and cause significant property damage or injury to people.

3. Off-color foliage Yellowish leaves on shrubs or trees that typically emerge bright green, leaves with blotches of dark brown or black, and leaves with holes eaten in them are all signs that trees and shrubs are stressed. An inspection by a Certified Arborist can determine the cause of the decline and provide recommendations for care or removal and replacement.

Kitchen upgrades Whether leaning toward the minimalist, glamorous or industrial, kitchen upgrades are hot as ever. Designers are breaking tradition with less upper cabinetry in favor of floating shelves. They’re introducing high-tech solutions such as U-sockets that allow you to charge your phone or tablet without the standard wall plugin. According to the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, the booming wine market has influenced kitchen design, with more attention being given to wine storage and integrated wine coolers.

Curbless showers In the bathroom, more homeowners are saying goodbye to the combination tub and shower. First-time camping basics

The Outdoor Foundation reports that roughly 40 million Americans go camping in a given year. Typical campers go on five camping trips per year, traveling an average of 191 miles from their home to the campground. Campers include friends on their trips 70 percent of the time, and hiking is the most popular camping trip activity.

Camping is a popular activity, but many curious wouldbe campers do not know where to get started. It can be tempting to purchase all of the gear needed and trek out in the woods to give it a try.

But if camping is not all you expected it to be, you have just made a costly investment in a lot of equipment you are unlikely to use again.

Instead of jumping right in, first try to learn as much about camping as possible.

Do your homework, learning about various camping styles and which ones you prefer.

Does the idea of renting a recreational vehicle sound more inviting than sleeping in a tent? Would you prefer a campground with showers, toilets and other amenities or is roughing it in the great outdoors more appealing?

Once prospective campers are able to find their camping path, they can explore all of the possibilities and give it a trial run.

Test the waters There’s bound to be a camping enthusiast in your midst. Find a friend or family member who enjoys camping out and find out if you can join him or her on his or her next trip. Take advantage of this person’s supplies (you may need to purchase nominal equipment, such as a backpack and sleeping bag) and expertise. Such trips can provide some firsthand

experience, and friends can offer advice on the keys to successful camping. It is generally easier to learn the ropes from someone who has experience choosing campsites and pitching tents, and this person also can offer suggestions about gear.

How rugged are you?

The definition of camping varies from camper to camper. For some, camping must include sleeping on a bedroll strewn out under the stars, while others may appreciate a few more luxuries on their camping excursions, like the running water or equipment offered at a campsite or park. Still, others do not want to leave the perks of home at home, preferring the comfortable living of a recreational vehicle. Nothing can end a camping excursion more quickly than discomfort and not enjoying the experience.

It is better to figure out in advance just how rough you want things to be.

Rent before buying Rent camping equipment to test out the gear you have in mind. This will give you an idea of everything from the sizes of tents to the type of cookware you may need.

Renting is a less expensive approach for those who plan to camp sparingly.

If your first trip inspires a genuine love of camping, then

you can purchase equipment.

You can always begin with the basics and then expand as you find new gear that will enhance your camping experiences, asking camping enthusiasts and experts for recommendations on everything from gear to campsites and more.

Pointers for beginners The first time you go camping on your own you will likely be a bit nervous. When looking for a campsite, find a level ground that is high up. You do not want to be rolling down a slope or find that the tide has come in and you’re now floating inside your tent. But choose a spot with a nearby water supply as well. You will need it for cooking and cleaning up. Water is heavy to carry, so you do not want to have to

transport it too far.

Never light a fire inside of your tent. Keep the fire for cooking and warmth away from sleeping quarters for safety’s sake. Carbon monoxide can build up quickly, even inside a ventilated tent. Never leave a campfire burning unattended.

A campsite with a mix of sun and shade will help you feel most comfortable. Spending several hours in the blazing sun can compromise your energy levels and put you at risk for dehydration. It is a good idea to have a way to get out of the hot sun. Overhanging tree limbs also may buffer the tent from rain.

Food storage is another factor to consider when camping. You will be outdoors where wild animals reside, and a campsite can attract

anything from small rodents to larger predators. Food should always be stored in insulated coolers that are not easily opened. Keep the food away from the tent so that animals will not rummage through sleeping quarters for snacks. Store garbage off the ground and out of reach of many animals. Dispose of garbage properly, ideally in covered trash receptacles. Animals accustomed to campsite food may be more daring than you would otherwise expect, so do not feed wildlife and keep food and trash out of reach.

Camping is a popular pastime and an activity tailormade for warmer weather.

But beginners should learn the ropes and test their equipment before investing too much time and money.

The history of Memorial Day Though many people are quick to refer to Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of summer, the day is much more than that. Initially known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day to remember those military members who died in service of the country.

The origins of Memorial Day remain a topic of debate.

In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y. as the official birthplace of Memorial Day. However, the roots of Memorial Day likely run much deeper, as researchers at Duke University note that during the Civil War, organized women’s groups in the south had begun to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers.

Memorial Day as we know it today can likely be traced to Charleston, S.C., where t ers, missionaries and some members of the press gathered on May 1, 1865 to honor fallen soldiers. During the Civil War, captured Union soldiers were

held at the Charleston Race Course and hundreds died during captivity. Upon their deaths, soldiers were buried in unmarked graves. When the Civil War ended, the May Day gathering was organized as a memorial to all the men who had died during captivity. The burial ground was landscaped, and those freed as a result of the Civil War played an integral role in the event at the Charleston Race Course.

While the event in Charleston might have been the first Memorial Day-type celebration in the southern United States, General John A. Logan is often cited as inspiring similar events in the north. As commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans’ organization for men who served in the Civil War, General Logan issued a proclamation just five days after the Charleston event that called for Decoration Day to be observed annually across the country. Logan preferred

the event not be held on the anniversary of any particular battle, and thus the day was observed for the first time on May 30. Celebrating the day in May also was significant to event organizers because May is a month when flowers are in bloom, making it easier for observers of the holiday to place flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers.

In 1868, events were held at more than 180 cemeteries in 27 states, and those figures nearly doubled in 1869. By 1890, every northern state officially recognized Decoration Day as a state holiday. But southern states honored their dead on a different day until after World War I, when the holiday was changed to recognize Americans who died in any war and not just the Civil War. Nearly every state now celebrates Memorial Day, a name for the holiday first used in 1882, on the last Monday in May. (Metro News Service)

Cooking for one or two Seniors face many changes as they move into their golden years. Downsizing living spaces and vehicles is common, as is implementing certain changes to improve quality of life. Many seniors also scale back in the kitchen, where some must make changes because of medical conditions. While it seems like reducing food portions would be easy, those used to prepping meals for a large family may find it difficult. The following tips can make meal preparation efficient and cost-effective.

• Divide and store. Supermarkets are increasingly offering larger packages of food products as well as “family size” offerings to compete with warehouse clubs.

Buying in bulk can help individuals save money, but it may not always be practical for people living alone or with just a spouse. If you must buy in bulk, invest in a food vacuum sealer or freezer storage bags. Immediately separate meats and poultry into smaller portions before storing them in the freezer.

Otherwise, look for bulk items that are individually wrapped to maintain freshness. Many canned and jarred items can be covered and stored in the refrigerator after containers are opened.

• Plan meals with similar ingredients. To reduce food waste,

use leftovers to create casseroles or mix them in with new meals.

Broiled or grilled chicken can be used to make soups, stir-fry dishes, fajitas, and sandwiches.

The fewer ingredients you have to buy, the smaller the risk of spoilage.

• Cut recipes in half. Recipes can be cut down depending on how many mouths need to be fed. When baking, cutting back on proportions of ingredients can be challenging. Search online for recipe-scaling programs that can make the work easier.

• Cook on the weekend. Use a weekend day to prepare food and package it into small containers in the refrigerator or freezer. Then the containers can be taken out as needed and heated quickly in the microwave for fast meals.

• Organize a meal-sharing club. Get together with a few friends who also have empty nests and split cooking duties.

If you’re accustomed to cooking larger portion sizes, do so and then spread the wealth with others in the group. Then sit back and relax when it is your opportunity to have meals delivered to you.

Health experts often recommend developing a sleep routine to people who struggle to fall asleep at night, and reading for 30 minutes before bed each night can be an integral part of such routines.

Research has shown that reading and engaging the brain in other ways, such as through intellectual games and puzzles, can stave off dementia. These

activities stimulate the cells in the brain to grow and connect, increasing the power of brain tissue. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, keeping the mind active through reading can strengthen connections between brain cells and build up brain cell reserves.

Mental activity might even generate new brain cells. All of these factors can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

ing can stimulate the brain to produce more white matter. White matter works together with gray matter and is responsible for sending sensory and motor stimuli to the central nervous system to stimulate a response. Healthy white matter keeps the central nervous system working effectively and may reduce risk of learning disabilities as well as impaired motor functions.

The educational benefits of reading are widely known. But reading also provides a host of other benefits.
