MC Fitness & Health: A partner in your quest for better health Getting and staying healthy is near the top of everyone’s long list of priorities these days. And chances are you’re already taking steps in that direction — eating more fruits and vegetables, drinking water, exercising and going for regular check-ups. But we all can use a little help sometimes, whether that’s a motivating incentive or a partner in the process. And if a partner’s what you need, you’ve got one in MC Fitness & Health. It’s a new integrated health and fitness facility from Mount Carmel that’s now open on U.S. 23 in Lewis Center, and it’s giving you a convenient partner on the journey to get and stay healthy. That’s because MC Fitness & Health offers everything you need — a fitness center, health services and an emergency department — all in one convenient location.
Fitness membership At the core of the facility is MC Fitness, a 50,000-squarefoot fitness center featuring spacious workout areas with state-of-the-art functional and strength training equipment and four fitness studios for a wide variety of group exercise classes. The facility also has an indoor walking/jogging track; a 25-meter, 8-lane lap pool; an exercise pool and warm water therapy pool; full-service locker rooms with complimentary towel service; plus showers, whirlpools, saunas and steam rooms. Beyond the equipment and facilities, your all-inclusive membership includes access to a team of degreed, certified fitness professionals, class instructors and other staff dedicated to helping you achieve your health
and fitness goals through personalized exercise plans, personal training and unlimited group exercise classes. And if you’re managing a medical condition or simply need additional support while you exercise, MC Fitness offers 8-week medically based fitness programs called Next Steps that provide health assessments, an individual exercise plan, supervised group workouts, and an end-of-session summary for you and your physician.
Healthcare services Of course, the key to a medically integrated fitness facility is having an expert team of physicians and other medical professionals working hand in hand with the fitness team to improve your health. That’s what makes MC Fitness & Health unique. It starts with having plenty of outpatient healthcare services available right on site. From primary care, cardiology and sports medicine physician offices to centers specializing in physical therapy, cardiac rehab, women’s health and disease management, MC Fitness & Health has your ongoing care well covered. And the adjacent full-service, 24-hour Emergency Room can handle your immediate needs as well.
Emergency room The full-service Emergency Department is available to you around the clock, and the ED’s board-certified emergency physicians, high-acuity nursing staff, on-call specialists and expert technicians have state-ofthe-art diagnostic equipment and other sophisticated technologies
at their disposal to treat almost any emergency. In fact, the Emergency Department is part of Mount Carmel St. Ann’s, so you’ll have access to the same highquality team, care and equipment you would expect at one of Mount Carmel’s full-service hospitals.
Primary care and specialty physician offices
MC Fitness & Health also has great primary and specialty care doctors who can diagnose and treat whatever might keep you from being and feeling your best. That means access to some of the top physicians in central Ohio, including Mount Carmel Medical Group, Mount Carmel Clinical Cardiovascular Specialists, Mount Carmel Neurology, and Mount Carmel Sports Medicine Specialists.
Imaging Whether you have emergency or outpatient needs, you have quick access to imaging services at MC Fitness & Health. Their skilled, licensed radiographers have state-of-the-art equipment at their disposal, and offer x-rays on a walk-in basis and other fast, accurate services like CTs, MRIs and ultrasounds by appointment. And each scan is read and interpreted by a board-certified radiologist, so you’ll have precise results quickly.
Lab services MC Fitness & Health offers emergency and outpatient laboratory services, too. Their highly experienced lab technicians utilize the latest medical technology to provide you with timely, trustworthy
medical testing. And walk-ins are available.
Mammography and bone density
The dedicated, all-female staff at the Women’s Health Center at MC Fitness & Health also offers services like digital mammography and bone density testing in a quiet, cozy environment with a fireplace, tea room, robe warmers and even more comfortable amenities just for women.
Cardiac rehabilitation The medically supervised Cardiac Rehabilitation program combines exercise and in-depth educational sessions to help speed recovery, reduce complications and provide the support you need to return to your best possible physical condition and quality of life.
Cardiovascular imaging The facility has a comprehensive array of imaging services available to identify heart and vascular-related ailments and help physicians better understand the nature and extent of any cardiovascular concern you may have. That includes noninvasive cardiac and vascular testing.
Community Health Center If you have a chronic condition, there’s a Community Health Center at MC Fitness & Health to help you manage it. The center includes a Mount Carmel Anticoagulation Center, which can help you monitor and manage your blood-thinning medications; a Mount Carmel Heart Failure Center, which can
help you learn to live with heart failure; and a Diabetes SelfManagement Program, which can give you the tools to control your diabetes.
Occupational Health Center
The on-site Occupational Health Center offers an extensive range of services to effectively manage your work-related healthcare needs, including work-related injury and illness care, employment examinations, substance abuse testing, medical surveillance, firefighter and police medical exams, and health and performance fitness testing.
Rehab services If you’ve experienced a traumatic illness or injury, an orthopedic or work-related injury or are coping with a chronic condition, MC Fitness & Health offers complete rehabilitation services to help you get back to work, home, your family and your life as quickly and fully as possible. Their expert team of physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and audiologists and certified athletic trainers provides a variety of helpful and effective therapies, including aquatic therapy, orthopedic rehabilitation, physical therapy and sports medicine rehabilitation. It may be hard to imagine having all these incredible health, wellness and fitness resources in one place, but if you’re looking for a convenient way to get and stay healthy, that’s the way it ought to be. And if you’re looking for a partner in the process, there’s none better than MC Fitness & Health.

Make weeknight meals healthy and simple Households in which both parents work and kids have school and extracurricular commitments can get a little hectic, particularly on weeknights. Parents who want to prepare nutritious dinners may feel it’s impossible to do so without making elaborate, time-consuming recipes. But there are ways for busy, time-strapped parents to make sure weeknight dinners are both healthy and simple. • Stock a healthy pantry. When grocery shopping, purchase some healthy nonperishable foods that you can rely on in a pinch. Instead of stocking the freezer with unhealthy yet easily prepared frozen foods that are often loaded with saturated fat, stock your pantry with whole grain pastas. Whole grain pastas are lower in calories and higher in fiber and contain more nutrients than refined white pastas. And once water is boiled, whole grain pastas can be prepared in roughly 10 minutes. • Rely on a slow cooker. One of the simplest ways to prepare healthy meals that won’t take much
How to avoid caregiver burnout Preparing meals can take as much time as cooking meals, so making meal prep a family affair can save a substantial amount of time.
time to prepare each night is to use a slow cooker. Set dinner in the slow cooker in the morning before leaving for work, and by the time you arrive home each night you will have a fully prepared, healthy meal ready to be served. • Make meal prep a family affair. Families who share the responsibility of making dinner on weeknights may find it easier to prepare healthy meals. Younger children may not be able to join in the preparation of too many dishes, but middle school and high school students can help out by
chopping vegetables while their parents work on other parts of the meal. Preparing meals can take as much time, if not more, than cooking meals, so making meal prep a family affair can save a substantial amount of time. • Cook meals in advance. Families who are hesitant to use slow cookers may benefit by preparing healthy meals over the weekend and then refrigerating or freezing them so they can be cooked on weeknights. If you plan to freeze meals prepared in advance, remember to remove them from the
5
freezer the night before and place them in the refrigerator so they are thawed out when you arrive home from work to place them in the oven. • Choose simple recipes. Trying new recipes is one of the joys of cooking. But trying new recipes on weeknights can be time-consuming because cooks have yet to grow accustomed to each step in the recipe. When looking for new weeknight recipes, look for meals that can be prepared in five steps or less, leaving the more complicated recipes for weekend meals.
Caring for an aging or sick relative is not always so easy. In addition to the physical demands of caring for such loved ones, tending to sick people can take a mental toll, potentially contributing to a condition referred to as caregiver stress. Caregiver stress can manifest itself in many different ways, including physical and emotional problems. The following are some ways to handle the stress of caring for a sick and/or elderly relative. • Investigate available resources. Explore all of the opportunities in your area that may relieve some of the burden of caring for your loved one. These may include in-home visiting care services, meal delivery, adult activity programs and more. • Ask for help. Find out if responsibilities can be split among other family members, giving each person a chance to rest and recuperate. • Get physical. Physical activity in any form can help reduce stress and improve feelings of well-being, offers the Alzheimer’s Association. Go for a walk, take an exercise class or ride a bicycle. Expect to feel more relaxed and less stressed after physical activity. • Speak with a therapist. Discuss your feelings with someone not directly related to your family or circle of friends. Caregivers may have feelings of anger, depression and anxiety, and may even be in denial about how much care this person really needs. Talking about your feelings with a professional can put them into perspective. • Focus on things you can control. You may not be able to cure the illness or disability, but there are things in your control. Rather than dwelling on things beyond your control, try to improve the things you can control. • Try to have fun. It’s easy to make caregiving the only part of your life. However, you have to leave room for letting off steam. Don’t feel guilty about going out with friends or a spouse. Make time for yourself.

Assisted living is more affordable than you think Often when meeting with families, they think that their mother or father cannot possibly have enough funds for assisted living. It takes much less than some believe. With as little as $50,000 in assets and a monthly income of $1,800 your parent should be able to stay in assisted living about two years. In this example they would be living in a private studio and receive care with hygiene, dressing, bathing and medication administration for about $125 per day—typical services many seniors need when they move into assisted living. Many families start with in-home care, understandably so, as we all want our parents to stay in their own home as long as possible. Once you are paying for these services about six hours per day, you are paying as much as living in assisted living. But they will receive so much more in return: 24-hour staffing, socialization with their peers, activity programs, three balanced meals and snacks daily, utilities, weekly housekeeping, laundry and bed linen changes and many amenities. Those families of service men or women
who served during a qualifying war time may be eligible for a pension benefit offered through the VA called Aid and Attendance. In the above example this benefit could extend the stay of a surviving spouse of a veteran to over four years. In our community, about 25% of our residents are utilizing long-term care insurance. The American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance reports that 8.1 million Americans are protected with long-term care insurance. Going back to the above example and assuming a policy with a $60 per day benefit this policy would extend finances out to as much as 20 years. A select few communities do participate in the Medicaid Assisted Living Waiver, but typically will expect a brief period of private pay before utilizing the program. So this may be another consideration in financial planning so assets are reserved for the expected spend-down period. For more details, or to evaluate a particular financial situation, please call Michele Mercer with The Inn at Olentangy Trails at (740) 417-9287.

Son of Thurman continues to boom in Delaware County Son Of Thurman, the robust and ambitious offspring of the Columbus institution Thurman Café, opened in Downtown Delaware in February 2014. Son Of Thurman’s parent restaurant, which has been located in German Village since 1942, graduated from local fame to national acclaim when it was featured on Travel Channel’s cult hit, “Man Vs. Food” and was voted by the same network as the USA’s #3 burger. Massive and uniquely flavorful burgers and sandwiches are what the Thurman name has been built upon, and Son Of Thurman offers the same menu with painstaking attention to the details of consistency. “I knew that we had to make the Thurman Experience available to more people,” explained Son Of Thurman owner Chris DeVol, who is the great-grandson of the original location’s founder. “When I saw people drive from out of state and wait three hours to get into our little family restaurant in German Village, I started looking for places to expand my family’s brand.” “Opening in Delaware County was a no-brainer,” said DeVol. “The economic growth north of Columbus has been historic, and nearly everyone that lived in Metro Columbus at one time and enjoyed the Thurman has migrated north, to that location. I looked at Downtown Delaware and saw the character our 4th generation family restaurant needed, and a downtown that is on the verge of being a destination. It’s been absolutely great since we opened our doors. In fact, business in Delaware has been excellent, so much so that Son Of Thurman has plans to expand operations, so look for announcements forthcoming.” Son Of Thurman has indeed been welcomed with open arms, and folks from all over central Ohio have been clamoring
“
Opening in Delaware County was a nobrainer … I looked at Downtown Delaware and saw the character our 4th generation family restaurant needed, and a downtown that is on the verge of being a destination. Learn about your digital footprint The Internet can be a wonderful tool to learn about interesting topics and connect with like-minded men and women, no matter where those people happen to be in relation to you. But the Internet is not anonymous, and much of our online activity, including the websites we visit, are cataloged in the vast database of digital ones and zeroes. This information makes up a person’s digital footprint. Digital footprint is the term that describes the trail a person leaves online. It can include information transmitted online, such as registration data for forums, emails and other attachments, and even videos and digital images. Just because something is deleted on a personal computer or from a social media site doesn’t mean that data has gone away forever. It may be lurking in the digital walls of the Internet’s hidden library. Traces of information can turn up when they are least expected. This can be especially alarming to parents of young children who spend considerable time online, both at home and school. Whatever one does online is contributing to an ever-growing portrait of that person online. A digital trail is being left every single day. Not only does this footprint help advertisers target specific consumers, it shows movements across various websites. This can prove problematic to many students and other youngsters, in addition to adults. Now more than ever mistakes or indiscretions are out there for public consumption. Kids are growing up with the potential of being “Googleable.” With this information in mind,
everyone who relies on the Internet should exercise caution with regard to their online activities. • Do not make any comments online that you would not be willing to say in public. Hiding behind the mask of the Internet is no longer possible. • Recognize that college admissions staff and employers look at social media sites and profile pages. Images you post and comments you make online may give college and university admissions staffers and prospective employers the wrong impression of you. • Students who work from computers on a school network may have their every move watched by administrators. Cyberbullying, foul language and inappropriate behavior can be discovered. • Many people do not understand how to create a profile that is simple and non-specific. The more details offered online the bigger a target a person becomes to those looking to take advantage of easy information. • Websites build lists about preferences and habits. While many are used to tailor consumer opportunities, this information can fall into the wrong hands and tell a lot about your schedule and routine. • Routinely search for yourself online to see if any incorrect or unflattering information comes up. Being aware of one’s digital footprint can guide responsible online behavior.

Village Academy adds ‘Fifth Quarter’ for summer In an effort to not only assist parents in finding excellent summer activities for their children, but also to bridge the learning gap with continuing academic challenges, Village Academy is launching “The Fifth Quarter” summer program for their students as well as students from the surrounding community. According to Susan Lasley, Head of School at the Powell college prep school, “Research shows that incorporating academic skills into summer camp programming can greatly enhance retention prior to returning to regular
classes in the fall. With that in mind, Village Academy has added a play-based academic component to each theme week currently being offered. Students in grades pre-K through 8 may enroll for the entire fifth quarter of summer or by individual week.” For students entering grades 9-12 online credit courses are also available. To find more information on specific courses go to www.villageacademy.org or you are invited to phone the school at (614) 841-0050. LImited spaces are still available for fall enrollment, as well.

Like humans, dogs and cats can suffer from bone fractures, torn ligaments, osteoarthritis and other orthopedic conditions. These injuries often require surgery to optimize recovery and, depending on the level of severity, your family veterinarian may recommend you see orthopedic specialists like the board certified surgeons at the Ohio State University Veterinary Medical CenterDublin (VMC-Dublin). Drs. Laurent Guiot and Reunan Guillou, Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, are at the forefront of veterinary orthopedic surgery. They are amongst few surgeons involved in the development of minimally invasive techniques similar to those used in people. Minimally invasive surgery helps decrease pain and complications associated with open surgeries and hastens recovery. Even for routine knee injuries, they can minimize pain by using arthroscopy, a camera system used as a standard of care in people. When pets suffer from severe joint

Skin cancer screening: Why acting now is important Less than a year ago, my mom was walking evidence that a healthy diet and exercise were the best predictors of a healthy body. Despite coming from a family riddled with medical conditions, she had made it to her mid-fifties without as much as getting the flu. She feeds her body well, practices daily exercise and stays socially and mentally active. That’s enough to keep anyone healthy, right? Unfortunately, it was not enough. Weeks later, we learned that my mom’s lifelong health routine was missing a very crucial component: skin cancer screenings. At a routine medical exam, her doctor suggested she visit a dermatologist for her first professional skin cancer screening. The result? The discovery of multiple basal cell carcinomas required multiple surgeries and ongoing medical care.
The importance of skin cancer screenings
The American Cancer Society states that skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, making up more than half of all cancer diagnoses. Even more troubling, skin cancer diagnoses are rising in the United States. We know that skin cancer is directly linked to the sun, but sun protection alone is not complete prevention. Skin cancer screenings are the
What should a skin cancer prevention routine look like for you? Here are Universal Dermatology’s three steps to skin cancer prevention: • Professional skin cancer screenings: Visit Universal Dermatology for regular prevention screenings, the most critical component of skin cancer survival, at least once per year. Annual professional screenings are recommended for everyone, regardless of your history with skin cancer. • At-home monthly screenings: Practice the ABCDE’s of at-home screenings by looking all over your body for moles displaying the following: Asymmetry, Borders with uneven edges, Color variation, Diameter changes, and Evolution in appearance. • Daily sun protection: Always wear sunscreen and protective clothing, even on cloudy days.
The friendly staff at Universal Dermatology is available to answer your questions at (740) 481-2600. Or stop by and say hello at their location, 7100 Graphics Way, Suite 3000 Lewis Center. best preventative tool in catching cancer early to provide effective treatment.
Early detection is the best prevention
Early detection of skin cancer is the strongest predictor of survival. Skin cancer, when detected by a physician in its early stages, can be treated effectively and prevented from spreading.
Studies show that professional dermatologists almost always detect skin cancer before a nonprofessional. That difference in time and early detection can be life-saving.
Skin cancer prevention at Universal Dermatology
Universal Dermatology offers central Ohio residents skin cancer screenings at four convenient
locations, all staffed with a professional medical team and a Board Certified Dermatologist. As skin cancer treatment providers, there is nothing the professional medical staff at Universal Dermatology would like to do more than prevent the need for intensive skin cancer treatment altogether. Early detection makes this possible.
Not sure where to start? Remember: Early detection is the key to survival and professional screenings offer the earliest detection. Visit one of the four convenient Universal Dermatology locations, where the professional staff can evaluate any suspicious moles or lesions and teach you how to effectively screen yourself at home.
Budget-friendly family vacation tips Family vacations provide wonderful opportunities for families to bond and make lasting memories. But such opportunities do not come without a price, and that price is oftentimes very steep. According to the 2015 TripBarometer study from popular travel website TripAdvisor, travelers across the globe are open to spending more on travel in 2016 than they have in the past. The study, conducted on behalf of TripAdvisor by the independent research firm Ipsos, analyzed more than 44,000 responses from travelers and hoteliers across the globe. Thirty-three percent of respondents plan to spend more on travel in 2016 than they did in 2015, while 31 percent admitted that they plan to spend more on travel because it’s important for their health and well-being. Those figures are good news for the travel industry, but travelers, especially parents who plan to vacation with their children, should expect to encounter rising room rates when planning their trips. That’s because nearly half of all hoteliers surveyed indicated their intentions to increase room rates in 2016. While that might scare off some budgetconscious travelers, parents should know there are ways to cut the costs of family vacations.
Consider alternative accommodations.
Families accustomed to staying in hotels while on vacation may be able to save by exploring some budget-friendly
alternatives to hotels. Vacation rental properties, which may include private homes or condominiums, may charge less per day than four- or five-star hotels in the same city. Before booking accommodations, parents should explore all lodging options, including online bed and breakfast websites that may showcase private homes that boast lower nightly rates than large hotel chains.
Book through a travel agency. Many travelers now book their own vacations through popular do-it-yourself travel websites such as Orbitz, but going it alone may not be the most cost-effective approach for families. Many travel agency representatives are accustomed to working with travelers who are on a budget and building vacations that include all the sights their clients want to see for the amount they’re willing to spend. Travel agency representatives typically have considerable connections in the countries they specialize in, and those connections can produce memorable experiences at lower costs than travelers would likely pay booking the trips on their own. In addition, many travel agencies include the cost of admissions to various sights in their packages, making it easier for travelers to budget for their trips.
Scour discount websites for deals.
E-commerce marketplaces such as Groupon aren’t just for date nights at home. Such websites and services also provide domestic and international travel
deals. Families can book entire trips through such websites, many times at considerable discounts, or scour the sites for deals on sightseeing opportunities in the cities where they will be vacationing.
Plan to cook. Meals can quickly consume travelers’ budgets. The Consumer Expenditure Survey released in 2015 by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicated that food and alcohol can take up about 16 percent of the budget for international travelers, and 27 percent for domestic travelers. Such estimates seem low and
might reflect the difficulty surveyors had distinguishing between travelers who visited friends and family, and subsequently spent little on food, and travelers who had to purchase all of their vacation meals. Families can cut meal costs by planning to do some of their own cooking. Rental properties and extended stay hotels are typically equipped with full kitchens, which can help parents save money without sacrificing the quality of their vacations. Families looking forward to their next vacations can implement several strategies to make those trips affordable.

How families can cut screen time No matter where you look, screens are everywhere. The proliferation of easily portable tablets and smartphones means many people, adults and children alike, are never too far from the nearest screen. While that accessibility has dramatically changed the way many people live their lives, excessive exposure to screen time can produce a host of unwanted side effects. Steven Gortmaker, a professor of the practice of health sociology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, has studied the negative effects of excessive screen time on children since the 1980s. According to Gortmaker, such effects include higher rates of obesity among kids who watch too much television and difficulty sleeping among youngsters with access to small screens, such as the screens of smartphones. In addition, a 2012 study published in the journal Psychiatry Research linked screen time with impaired cognitive function in young males. But adults are not immune to the effects of excessive screen time, either. Spending significant time being sedentary and staring at screens can increase adults’ risk for cardiovascular disease. An Australian study published in the December 2012 issue of the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that, compared with persons who watch no television, those who spend a lifetime average of six hours per day watching television can expect to live 4.8 fewer years. So what can families do to cut back on their screen time? While it likely won’t be easy to put down smartphones and tablets and turn off laptops and televisions, the following are a handful of ways for families to spend less time staring at screens.
Remove televisions from bedrooms.
Parents may find it impossible to gauge, much less control, how much time their kids spend watching television when youngsters have TV’s in their bedrooms. Though this will likely be met with considerable resistance, remove televisions from bedrooms in your home. Set a positive example for kids by removing your own bedroom television as well. Come kids’ bedtimes, make sure all devices, including smartphones and tablets, are left in common areas of the home rather than bedrooms so kids are not tempted to watch videos instead of falling asleep.
An Australian study published in the December 2012 issue of the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that, compared with persons who watch no television, those who spend a lifetime average of six hours per day watching television can expect to live 4.8 fewer years. Institute a “no screens” rule during meals.
Many parents grew up in households that did not allow televisions to be on during meals, and while the times might have changed with respect to the technology, similar rules can still prevail today. A Òno screensÓ rule during meals gives parents and their kids time to catch up, bond and foster stronger relationships.
Do not use the television for background noise.
Turn the television off when it’s serving as just background noise. If you need background noise, turn on some music instead.
Log screen time. Logging screen time for each member of the family can provide an estimate of just how much time the whole family spends staring at screens. Encourage each member of the family to spend as much time being physically active as he or she spends staring at screens. Set goals for each member of the family to reduce their screen time, even rewarding those who reach their goals. Reducing screen time can improve overall health and help family members reconnect with one another.

Did you know? The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that children and adolescents get 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. The CDC advises that such physical activity should include aerobic activity and muscle and bone strengthening exercises. Aerobic activity should take up most of kids’ daily physical activities and can include moderate activities, such as brisk walking, or more intense activities like running. Parents should make sure kids include some vigorous aerobic activity in their physical activity routines at least three days per week. Muscle strengthening activities do not mean parents should get their youngsters in the gym as soon as possible. Rather, activities like
gymnastics or push-ups done three times per week can be enough to help kids build strong muscles. The CDC notes that as kids reach adolescence, they may start structured weighttraining programs to strengthen their muscles. Jumping rope or running three times per week can serve as kids’ bonestrengthening exercises.

The goal for all youth athletes regardless of ability level is typically the same: reduce the risk of injury (both on the field and in the weight room) and improve sport performance by enhancing speed and strength capabilities. However, the route to achieve these goals can vary by individual based on an assessment protocol. All human movements ranging from basic mobility all the way down to ankle/foot position and breathing are taken into consideration so the athlete is put in the best position to succeed immediately. The overall mission of SOAR is very simple: First, build confidence in youth athletes by establishing a sound foundation of basic speed and strength concepts.

Changes to expect as cats age Dogs are widely referred to as “man’s best friend,” and few dog owners can imagine life without their beloved pups. But Fido’s feline counterparts are incredibly popular as well. According to estimates from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, somewhere between 74 million and 96 million cats are owned in the United States, putting cats on par with dogs (the ASPCA estimates Americans own between 70 million and 80 million dogs). Cats are also quite popular in Canada. The 2014 market research report titled “Canadian Pet Market Outlook,” which examined pet ownership and pet trends throughout Canada, reported that there are 7.9 million cats in The Great White North, which is also home to 5.9 million dogs. Many prospective pet owners feel that caring for cats must be easier than caring for dogs. Cats do not need daily walks to stay happy and healthy, and many cats do not crave attention as much as their canine counterparts. But caring for cats is not always so simple, especially as cats grow older. The American Association of Feline Practitioners notes that some cats age faster than others. But older cats are often classified into three groups: • Mature or middle-aged: 7 to 10 years (44 to 56 years for humans) • Senior: 11 to 14 years (60 to 72 years for humans) • Geriatric: 15-plus years (76-plus years for humans) Though this might surprise some people, the AAFP notes that many cats can live well into their geriatric years, some even reaching their early twenties. Owners of geriatric cats may need to be extra diligent when caring for their felines, as cats
often experience significant changes in their health and behavior as they age. It’s important for cat owners to take their cats for routine veterinary checkups regardless of their cats’ ages, but such appointments are especially necessary for aging cats. Because cats tend to require less attention than dogs, it can be harder for cat owners to notice changes in health or behavior in aging cats than they might notice with aging dogs. Routine vet visits can ensure that age-related health conditions don’t go undiagnosed, and such visits may even help to delay the onset of certain problems. The AAFP recommends that healthy older cats be examined by their veterinarians every six months. While that may seem frequent, six months for older cats is roughly equivalent to two years for human beings, and that’s plenty of time for cats’ health to change dramatically. In between vet visits, cat owners can look for the following changes that cats often undergo as they age, calling their cats’ vets immediately if any of these signs appear to be having any adverse effects on the cat. • Altered sleep-wake cycle • Changes in vision • Appearance of brown spots in the iris • Decreased sense of smell • Brittle nails • Decreased lung reserve • Heart or circulatory problems • Decreased ability to digest foods and absorb nutrients • Loose skin • Reduced ability to handle stress • Changes in behavior • Changes in mobility More information about caring for aging cats is available at www.catvets.com.
