meeT The DocTors Bill Waddell DDs Dr. Bill Waddell received his Bachelor’s Degree from The Ohio State University and obtained his Doctorate from The Ohio State College of Dentistry. He is a member of the American Dental Association, Columbus Dental Society, Seattle Study Club and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Dr. Waddell participates in countless hours of continuing education on implant dentistry, sleep medicine, and comprehensive treatment solutions. In 2002, Dr. Waddell was invited to be a dental evaluator for MetLife Dental Quality Initiative Program. Being 1 of 10 dentists in the United States that are an integral part of this program, he conducted office evaluations throughout the country in an effort to improve the quality of care delivered by the more than 110,000 participating dentists. The result is reflected in the state-of-theart, efficient and calming environment his practice provides. After practicing dentistry for over 30 years, Dr. Waddell continues to welcome each new patient with a hand-written note.

Dr. Jennifer J. Miller received her Bachelor’s Degree from Miami University of Ohio, received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from NYU College of Dentistry and completed her General Practice Residency at New York Medical College-Metropolitan Hospital. Completing a hospital-based residency, she is well trained in emergency medicine, and has advanced her skills in speciality areas such as: implant dentistry, oral surgery, periodontal surgery, and root canal therapy. Her training from NYU College of Dentistry has allowed her to also focus in areas of cosmetic dentistry and she is Invisalign Certified. Following residency, Jennifer furthered her training by completing the prestigious Implant Fellowship program at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry which allows her to focus on complex implant restorative treatment. How to become a library superhero
The Delaware County District Library (DCDL) Summer Reading Club kicks off Saturday, May 30 with the theme “Every Hero Has A Story.” The eight-week reading program encourages kids ages 0-18 to read a total of 12 hours before July 25. Here are five easy steps to becoming a Library Superhero.
1. Read all 12 hours Whether reading alone, with a friend, or having a caregiver read to you, it’s to your advantage to read all 12 hours. At six hours, you get a Superhero Utility Belt to store all your superhero needs! Then at 12 hours, pick out a book to keep, donated by our Friends of the Library.

The basic idea in the Montessori philosophy of education is that all children carry within themselves the person they will become. In order to develop physical, intellectual and spiritual potential to the fullest, the child must have freedom—a freedom to be achieved through order and self-discipline. The world of the child, say the Montessori educators, is full of sights and sounds which, at first, appear chaotic. From this chaos children must gradually create order, learn to distinguish among the impressions that assail their senses, and slowly but surely gain mastery of themselves and the environment. personality) to persist in a given task. If Montessori children are free to learn, it is because they have acquired an “inner discipline” from their exposure to both physical and mental order. This is the core of Dr. Montessori’s philosophy. Patterns of concentration, “stick-to-itiveness” and thoroughness established in early childhood produce a confident and competent learner in later years. The following are a few tips for parents who want to encourage their kids’ passions for sports in positive ways. • Show respect for coaches and officials. Parents should not act like they are the final authority on calls or how team members should play. Respect should always be shown to coaches and referees. • Let your child have fun regardless of his or her performance. Too often parents get swept up in how their children are performing when the goal for young athletes should be to enjoy them-

PRDC offers a wide range of free and confidential services to the community Pregnancy Resources of Delaware County (PRDC) opened its doors as The CORE Center in July 2007 in Sunbury. It was the fulfillment of a strategy that started several years earlier by a group of community volunteers, under the direction of Catherine Wood, to open a pregnancy center to serve women in Delaware County. The non-profit organization was operated by volunteers until a parttime director was hired in 2009. In July 2010, the Center moved to the city of Delaware. More changes occurred in 2014 with the adoption of a new name and logo, and the opening of a satellite office in Powell. PRDC offers a wide range of free and confidential services, including
pregnancy tests, limited obstetrical ultrasound, and education and information on the options of parenting, adoption and abortion. Additionally, PRDC partners with Relationships Under Construction to bring relationship and abstinence education to local public schools in Delaware County. Many PRDC clients choose to participate in the Earn While You Learn program, which offers expectant parents the opportunity to earn points for purchasing baby clothing from the Baby Boutique. Health benefits of meditation Meditation is often trumped as a means to reducing stress and restoring healthy function in the body. While meditation might once have been considered a New Age treatment, in recent years it has developed into a mainstream practice supported by both traditional and alternative medical providers. The Mayo Clinic says that anyone can practice meditation. A cost-effective treatment that does not require any special equipment or location, meditation has been practiced for thousands of years and originally was developed to help people understand the mystical or spiritual forces of life. Although meditation for some may still have religious or spiritual connotations, in a medical sense it is typically used for relaxation and stress reduction. Various studies show that meditation can be associated with improvement of
a variety of issues. Researchers describe meditation-based changes as ones that actually change the brain. Changes in the circuitry of the brain may affect the way a person responds to specific situations. The following are a few ways to put mindful meditation to use. • Strengthen cognitive function: Dr. Sara Lazar, a neuroscientist at Massachusetts General Hospital, says meditation can help thicken the prefrontal cortex of the brain, helping to reverse the pattern of cognitive function decline as one ages. • Protect against heart disease: There is some indication that meditation can reduce concentrations of the marker C-reactive protein, which is associated with the development of heart disease.

Learning a martial art can develop social and interpersonal skills in surprising ways. There is a longstanding and deeply rooted misconception about the martial arts. Many believe the training is all about violence. However, this is not the case. It is not the goal of responsible, martial arts instructors to teach students to fight. Self-defense skills are central to the practice, but their true purpose is more diverse and more important. Many important lessons can be learned from studying martial arts. Selfimprovement of body, mind and spirit is the true purpose of training. Along with the physical skills, karate students learn to practice the art of self-knowledge. Quality training programs instill the virtues of respect and self-discipline in students of all ages. These are virtues that carry over into all areas of life. Gaining respect How can martial arts training improve social skills in you or your children? First and foremost is by teaching people to respect each other. No student of the martial arts can progress without an understanding of this essential attribute. It can be humbling for a successful, middle-aged executive to ask for help from a boy or girl younger than her own children. Karate training teaches us that knowledge comes from those who possess it, regardless of age or any other factors. We learn
from those who know more than us, and we respect them for their knowledge. Karate students learn to value one another because we are all on similar journeys: we all face challenges and setbacks, and we are all trying to better ourselves. Building selfconfidence By learning to control our emotions and think before we act, karate students become more skilled at allowing others to participate in our lives. With regular practice, martial arts students learn to be better listeners and partners. It’s perfectly natural to want to please and impress our teachers, classmates, friends, and other people important to us. But the need to “prove” ourselves by taking unnecessary risks is reduced when we become secure and comfortable in our own skin. Students learn to set our own personal goals. We learn self-defense, but we also learn

Village Academy adds ‘Fifth Quarter’ for summer In an effort to not only assist parents in finding excellent summer activities for their children, but also to bridge the learning gap with continuing academic challenges, Village Academy is launching “The Fifth Quarter” summer program for their students as well as students from the surrounding community. Did you know? A recent study authored by education and psychology experts in Australia suggests that kids are spending far more time looking at screens than the two hours recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Published in the journal BMC Public Health in early 2015, the study surveyed more than 2,600 Australian students between
the ages of eight and 16 to determine how much screen-based media use, or SBMU, kids were averaging each day. SBMU included television viewing, computer usage and video game playing. The study determined that 45 percent of eight-year-olds and 80 percent of 16-year-olds were exceeding the recommended two hours of screen time per day.

Encourage a love of physical activity in youngsters According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, children and adolescents should engage in physical activity for 60 minutes or more each day. While fulfilling those requirements might not have been a problem for kids who grew up before the dawn of the Internet, nowadays kids are spending less time playing outside and more time on their computers or other devices. That reality is problematic for parents who want their kids to embrace physical activity thanks to the positive impact that exercise can have on kids’ physical and mental well-being. Parents hoping to instill a love of physical activity in their youngsters may find that taking a more active role by exercising with their kids is an effective way to get them off the couch and away from their computer screens. • Turn errands into exercise opportunities. Many parents take their children along with them when running errands. When such errands don’t necessarily require the use of a car, consider riding bicycles instead. Kids who otherwise don’t enjoy errands may now find them more fun, all the while fulfilling their daily recommended quotas for exercise and spending quality time with their parents. • Include kids in your own athletic pursuits. Parents might not be able to take younger kids along with them to the gym, but that does not mean your youngsters must be excluded from all of your athletic pursuits. If you have any upcoming athletic activities or challenges on your schedule, such as a new recreational sports season or community fun run or 5K, let kids tag
along as you train or practice. Parents of adolescents can inquire at their local gyms if they offer discounted memberships to teens. If so, take kids along with you on trips to the gym so they learn the value and benefits of daily strength and conditioning exercises. • Make more time to play. Parents may already have busy schedules, but finding time to play with their kids is a great way to get youngsters to embrace physical activity. Kids might be reluctant to shoot hoops in the driveway if no one is willing to join them, but they will likely be far more willing to do so if mom and dad are willing to play with them. This is not only a good way for parents to ensure their kids get enough exercise, but also a great and fun way for moms and dads to make time for physical activity. • Recognize that physical activity does not have to mean organized sports. Some kids have no interest in team sports while others do not have the athletic ability to compete after a certain age. Parents who want their kids to exercise more should recognize that there are plenty of ways to be physically active that do not involve organized team sports. Hiking; riding bicycles; swimming at a nearby pool, lake or ocean; and even going for nightly walks are all physical activities that people of all ages and athletic abilities can enjoy. Physical activity is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. While getting kids to put down their tablets and gaming system remote controls may not be easy, parents who resolve to exercise with their children might find their youngsters more receptive to regular physical activity.
