Quality Yard & Home Maintenance offers quality service at an affordable price My name is Jeremy Nestor. My wife and I have three daughters and live in Pataskala. We attend Eagle Rock church in Pickerington. My goal with this business is to “first Honor God with our business” and then run a successful all-around company to serve customers in a small service area including and surrounding our home town. I was born and raised in Pataskala and graduated from Watkins Memorial. I am very grateful for my family, business and what God has done in my life. Our vision: Be the best company for hire by performing quality service that customers deserve, which will lead to repeat business for both our landscape and handyman departments. We are a full service lawn, landscape and home maintenance company. We
are fully insured and licensed. We offer reliable, quality lawn, landscape and home maintenance at an affordable price. Our clients are typically homeowners and business owners who outsource all of their maintenance to our one-stop shop. Are you a homeowner or business owner who doesn’t have the time and/or knowledge to handle the maintenance of your home, yard or business? Our process will ensure your work gets done the right way, and cheaper than calling all the different contracting companies, and still guarantee that you are satisfied. We offer a Moneyback Guarantee! We will work with you until you are satisfied or refund the amount of labor charged. Give us 1% of your trust and we will earn the other 99%. Call us at (614) 559-0078.
Don’t take our word for it. Here is what others are saying about us: “I employed the services of Quality Yard and Home Maintenance last year after my backyard succumbed to the scorching summer heat and insect damage. There were things growing in my backyard that made it look like a desert, and I thought my neighbors would crucify me! Jeremy and his professional team restored my yard and it looked beautiful! I’ve employed other lawn care companies in the past who only seemed interested in making money instead of taking care of their clients’ lawn needs. Quality Yard specialists treated my lawn according to the weather and what my particular lawn needed instead of strictly on a schedule. I also had them plant a couple of trees this season, trim some shrubs, and complete a fall bed cleanup. They did an amazing job, and some neighbors who used other lawn care services have asked me about Quality Yard.” - Kevin Kinney, Westerville, OH “Quality Yard and Home Maintenance brought my lawn back to life. We began working with them shortly after moving into our new home three years ago, and they have done an excellent job of maintaining our landscaping and caring for
our lawn. Their crew is always reliable, punctual and dependable. Jeremy will bend over backwards to make sure you’re satisfied with their work.” Thanks, - Dave Stukus, New Albany, OH “Jeremy, Just wanted to tell you that your helper did a fine job on everything. You have found a way to get the very best workforce.” Thank you - John Murphy, Pataskala, OH “Quality Yard has been treating my lawn and bushes for the past three years. Before I employed them I tried other national companies with lackluster results. Jeremy told me when he first saw my lawn that it would take a few years to get it where I wanted it. He was absolutely correct now my yard is the envy of my subdivision. I always receive comments about how full and green my lawn and bushes look. In addition to my lawn he finished my basement last winter turning it into a Theater Room that is just perfect for family escapes. Jeremy is very fair with his pricing and ALWAYS does a quality job. Highly recommended!” - Michael Brammer, Pataskala, OH

New Albany Arts Council looks to add adult community theater  Back in 1993, the New Albany Arts Council was formed by Harold Cooper, who had envisioned the organization to be a leading player in the promotion and expansion of arts in New Albany. Sadly, Harold Cooper passed away this year, but we remain steadfast in the mission he exemplified: making the arts available to any and all who wish to participate. We will miss him greatly and are forever grateful for his guidance and love. Our Rose Run Players youth theatre troupe had another great year, performing The Lion King Jr, for a record crowd at The McCoy Center in July. The show featured one of the largest casts in program history. We look forward to presenting Madagascar-A Musical Adventure Jr., also at The McCoy Center, July 13 -16, 2017. Stay tuned to our Facebook page and website for audition information. Building on the success of our youth theatre troupe, and in anticipation of the construction of the New Albany Amphitheater, now in design stage, we feel the time is right to add

Making your home—HOME for the holidays! By Sandy Warner Oakland HOME Store Manager For many of us, decorating your home for the holidays can seem like such a daunting task. Most of us will either pull out the artificial tree or visit the local garden store or tree lot to find the perfect tree for your family. Where there’s a tree, there is usually a wreath that is hung on the front door or over the fireplace. And that is where many of us stop. Tree. Wreath. Done. However, all it takes is just a few details to add character, warmth and a sense of festivity to your home. It doesn’t require tools, breaking your budget, and it certainly doesn’t require re-doing your entire interior decor. In fact, trending in the world of holiday decor is a more simple, clean style, which is great for those of us that don’t have time or the desire to embellish every inch of our homes in red and green. And just because it’s simple and natural doesn’t mean it’s not elegant and sophisticated.
Here are a few ideas that may inspire you this season.
Bling is in! Touches of sparkle with natural elements will really make your decorations come alive.
Candles can make a home calm and welcoming. Flameless varieties will help with home safety.
• Choose timeless pieces - things you can bring out year after year and that don’t lose their holiday appeal. Stay away from fads, such as bright, unusual colors and patterns that will be out of style by next year. • Wreaths can always be used on front doors and mantles, but adding a wreath or swag to other doors in your home will quickly carry holiday cheer throughout your house. Consider the door of a bathroom, closet, or a set of French doors. And, don’t forget wreaths can become instant centerpieces when set in the middle of a table, then filled with candles or a vase of holly and berries. • Adding brass, gold, or silver items to your existing decor will create “holiday bling”. Combining this bling with branches of evergreens, birch logs or a wooden Christmas tree will make those pieces come alive. Don’t be afraid to incorporate those sparkly pieces with natural elements. • Find yourself with too many ornaments? Group them in a glass or wooden bowl which becomes an instant centerpiece for your coffee table. • Your family dining table is an important part of the holidays, so make it special! Take a small group of evergreens, tie a ribbon around them, and then place them on top of each of your place settings at the holiday table. This can also be done with cinnamon sticks, sprigs of berries, and artificial mistletoe. The use of chargers has increased and non-traditional chargers are all the rage. Whether it be a blackboard, slice of wood or piece of slate, make sure it still allows your guests to eat comfortably during their special dinner. • Pillows are a great way to accessorize your living space. Adding holiday pillows to your existing ones will give your room new life and comfort for the holidays. • Adding sprigs of holly and /or berries has always been one of my favorite things to do to spice up my home. Setting them in an existing vase, crock or piece of pottery adds instant holiday magic and is super easy. They can be real or artificial! Make sure the berries are red, not a burgundy or dark color. The darker colors will muddy up the room, instead of making it pop! • Candles are a must. With today’s flameless varieties, it opens the door to using candles safely throughout your entire house and creates a beautiful atmosphere that is both calming and welcoming. Don’t forget lanterns and hurricanes. They give your candles personality and presence. Candles are essential. You can never have enough. • And, remember to add a few key pieces such as a family heirloom, a special snowman, or a favorite platter. It’s all about adding the personal touches to what you already have that can turn your home into a festive, cozy holiday haven. Have fun and we’ll see you soon at Oakland Nursery HOME.
Make your dining table a special gathering area for the holidays with small touches such as evergreens or cinnamon sticks tied with a ribbon at place settings.
Extra ornaments and pinecones in a vase with a ribbon makes a beautiful and easy centerpiece.

Active participatory learning propels Ready Set Grow! Remember your own early childhood days? Running, climbing and swinging on the playground, digging in the sandbox, painting at the easel, building with blocks, playing with friends? If you attended a high quality preschool program, you were provided with plenty of materials to explore and you made exciting discoveries every day. Educational research confirms these experiences as essential to healthy early childhood development. Hands-on learning engages all areas of the brain and sets the foundation for later school success. This is the education you want for your child! You’ll find it at Ready Set Grow, a
nurturing haven for child development. As a leader and innovator in early childhood education, Ready Set Grow implements the High Scope curriculum. Whether engaged in childselected play experiences, teacher-led small group experiences, or movement-focused large group experiences, children are active participants in their own learning. As parents, teachers, and educational researchers have discovered, the High Scope curriculum, with its active learning approach, not only helps young children excel in language and cognitive learning,
but also promotes independence, curiosity, decision-making, cooperation, persistence, creativity and problem-solving—the fundamental skills necessary for success in adult life. “It’s a very natural way of learning,” says Maggie Spangler, Director of Education at Ready Set Grow. “When an infant, toddler or preschool child is curious about something in their world, they naturally want to explore and learn more. When adults nurture that curiosity by providing enriching experiences, children discover new ideas and master new skills. At Ready Set Grow, our teachers are constantly assessing children’s development and interests,
encouraging curiosity and exploration, and helping children grow as life-long learners.” Ready Set Grow’s approach to early childhood education is unique in New Albany. Small-house concept for senior care gives residents a feeling of home By Encarnacion Pyle The Columbus Dispatch Despite a more than five-decade age difference, Elva Gillis, 88, and Cynthia Nkrumah, a 35-year-old nurse’s aide, sat side-by-side on a recliner in the living room, giggling and eating apple slices like a couple of school girls. Nearby, George Roloson, 84, and his wife Jayne, 91, read the newspaper at a long dining room table, the summer sun streaming in from the front window. A few seats away, another senior resident ate a slice of homemade chocolate cake while watching an aide, all of whom are called “elder assistants, cut up peppers and onions for lunch. By all appearances, inside and out, this New Albany-area nursing home could be any house, in any neighborhood — and that’s the beauty of it. “We like to say, ‘small house, big difference,’ said Gary Horning, a spokesman at Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices, which is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and serves more than 4,100 people annually in all of its facilities. Just like there’s no place
like home, there are few places like Otterbein’s “small-house skillednursing and rehab neighborhoods if you can’t be home, Horning said. Dr. Bill Thomas, a Harvard-educated geriatrician, created the small-house idea and persuaded an organization to build the first in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 2003 as part of his Green House Project. The approach has been adopted by others since then and is believed by many to be the wave of the future. The largest provider of this concept in Ohio, Otterbein has eight smallhouse neighborhoods, including this one, off Harlem Road, just north of New Albany, and another in Gahanna on North Hamilton Road. Both have been built in the past 1 1/2 years. Each Otterbein neighborhood is made up of five small houses, purposely built in a residential setting so it feels like any other neighborhood, said Kevin St. John, the “guide or administrator of the New Albany-area neighborhood. Unlike more traditional nursing homes, Otterbein’s houses have no nurses’
Brooke Lavalley | Dispatch
Resident Elva Gillis has decorated her private one-bedroom suite at the Otterbein home with personal touches like a photo of her late husband. stations, long hospital corridors, or institutional kitchens or dining rooms. There also are no medicine carts parked in the halls or call lights beeping over the doors, he said. “It’s a great, small, family-type environment where everyone knows one another, said Kris Willis, 68, of Clintonville. Her mother lives in the New Albany-area community. Each Otterbein house is home to 10 residents (for a total of 50 in the neighborhood), all of whom get their own private one-bedroom suite with a bathroom.
At the heart of each home is a large hearth, circled by sofas and recliners, with a TV on one side and a quieter nook on the other for activities such as reading, card playing and raising the heart rate on an exercise bike. Off to the side is a big kitchen and breakfast bar, where “elders (aka residents) and their loved ones can help staff plan and cook meals. There’s also a long family-style dining table, a house laundry room and a spa with hairstylist’s chair and jetted tub. At the back of the house
is a screened-in porch with tables and chairs and a fenced outdoor patio, complete with a garden where residents can pick fresh veggies for their meals. “We have block parties and family get-togethers and do whatever activities the elders are interested in, Horning said. In fact, everything about the houses is centered on the residents, St. John said. “They get up and go to bed when they want to, they can eat when they want and they can do what they want, he said. “It’s their home. It seems to be paying off. Residents of the New Albany-area neighborhood reported a higher-thanaverage score on a state satisfaction survey last year, said Beverley Laubert, the state’s long-term-care ombudsman. Each house is staffed with certified nursing assistants with advanced training. In addition to providing care, these elder assistants pitch in with most household activities, including cooking, laundry and light cleaning. According to studies, nursing assistants at small homes are more knowledgeable about
residents’ likes and dislikes because of the consistent staffing. They’re also more likely to believe they can be a positive role in the seniors’ lives, report more job satisfaction and tend to stay longer on the job. There’s also a medical director and licensed nurses who go among the houses, St. John said. And residents have access to a dietitian, social-services coordinator and speech, physical and occupational therapists, as well as other medical professionals. “It’s not your grandmother’s nursing home, said Kathryn Brod, president and CEO of LeadingAge Ohio, a trade group of nonprofit nursing homes and other senior services. It’s a model that state aging director Bonnie Kantor-Burman says is truly groundbreaking and can be adopted by others. “Family and others who walk into a small house often say, ‘I could live here,’ she said. “That says a lot. epyle@dispatch.com @EncarnitaPyle This story originally appeared in The Columbus Dispatch Sunday, July 3, 2016

Saturday at the Symphony The New Albany Symphony Orchestra is proud to introduce a new concert series, titled “Saturday at the Symphony. Presented by PNC Arts Alive and in partnership with Autism Society of Central Ohio and Methodist Eldercare, NASO has designed these sensory-friendly performances for audience members who prefer or require a more relaxed concert environment. Each performance will be presented in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment with lots of visuals, and will include a complimentary treat for everyone in attendance. While Saturday at the Symphony is open to anyone, this series of 45-minute concerts has been designed to meet the needs of families with very young children, those on the autism spectrum, and individuals who have Alzheimer’s or dementia. Audience members will be free to move around, talk and BYO reinforcements and motivational systems. House lights will be turned on but dimmed; family restrooms will be available; and “chill-out zones, including hands-on activities, an instrument petting zoo, and communication cards, will be provided in the lobby. Attendees will be able to download a “What to Expect at the Concert story board and attend a “Meet Your Seat afternoon prior to concert day. NASO musicians, ushers and volunteers will receive specific training from partner organizations to accommodate the audience. Events such as Saturday at the Symphony are an integral part of improving the lives and experiences of individuals with autism or dementia and their families. The nature of these disabilities can often increase family isolation due to involuntary sensory and behavioral responses. Saturday at

Parents can help students build strong study skills By Jim Benedict Center Director Sylvan Learning of Columbus Try to remember. When you were a student, did you ever ask, “How will Grammar (or Geometry or Social Studies) benefit me later in life?” Be honest. Now, return to today. When was the last time you took notes at a meeting, prioritized your “to-do” list, or organized a project from start to finish? The skills you use to do these tasks at work and at home are the same skills you learned and honed in English class (and Geometry and Social Studies). Now, your children are developing those skills that will enable them to read analytically, write and speak expressively and think strategically. And when they ask, “What good is this going to do me?”— you know that it all starts with taking notes in History class, studying for that Bio exam and juggling time to accommodate school, sports and social calendars! Organization, time management, note taking, test taking and strategic reading are all essential study skills that are first introduced to young people in the classroom, but ultimately transfer far beyond school. To help your child develop these skills in a way that is meaningful to them — mainly applying them to their “job” which is school — Sylvan Learning recommends tips that parents can follow:
Organization and time management
• Have students use a planning calendar to track daily, weekly and monthly assignments and responsibilities. • Encourage children to break down large, complex tasks into manageable pieces. • Have children prioritize homework and other tasks when they get home from school, then complete the tasks in that order. • Model the habits you want your children to emulate. Are you organized? Do you prioritize tasks and do them right away or do you procrastinate? Show your child your own to-do list and show them how you tackle your biggest tasks first.
Note taking • Don’t panic if a child’s notes look sloppy and disorganized (whether on paper or online). It’s often just a sign of a student with an active mind who is organizing things in ways that work best for him or her. • Encourage students to review their notes and even
rewrite them, if necessary, to be sure they make sense. • As they review their notes, have children identify the most important points and highlight them. Help them reorganize their notes as they go rather than waiting until the end of the term.
Test taking • Urge a student to study over a period of days or weeks instead of cramming the night before. • Be sure students go into the test with the right equipment, whether that means a calculator, class notes, textbooks or simply a pencil. • Encourage them to answer test questions they know first and then go on to the more challenging questions.
and personalized methods have inspired more than 2 million students to discover the joy of learning. Sylvan’s certified personal instructors provide individual instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, study skills and test-prep for college entrance and state exams. New STEM courses provide additional inspiration and fun for students in grades 1-6. Sylvan helps transform kids into inspired learners with the skills to do better in school and the confidence to do better in everything else.
Reading • Encourage young readers to use all the clues available to them while reading, such as headlines, pictures, captions, charts, tables and graphs. • Urge them to read different types of writing, such as books of fiction and nonfiction, newspaper and magazine articles, letters and Web sites. • Talk with kids after they read a book or article. Have them tell you what the story was about, why it did or didn’t interest them and how it related to their life. Studies show that the more involved parents are with their children’s education, the better the children do in school. What the studies don’t say is that this involvement is not just in the children’s school, but in the children’s lives. Since life is a balance of basic core skills (reading and math) and personal skills, such as communication and responsibility skills (organization and time management), parents need to nourish all of these skills, not just the ones that yield a grade. The sense of accomplishment students can feel from a “job well done” is something every parent can teach by showing students how to break those big tasks into the necessary steps. Your child will thank you for teaching them this important life skill! For additional educational resources for children in grades pre-K through 12, please visit www.SylvanLearning. com or call (614) 9449510. All Tails ‘R’ Waggin‘ is Readers Choice winner! In 2014, All Tails ‘R’ Waggin‘ completed a fabulous new expansion that includes a huge Doggie Daycare & Training wing, a very upscale Self-Service Pet Salon, and 12 Exclusive Patio Deluxe Suites. The recently opened Daycare and Training wing is a favorite amongst customers and the staff! “Everyone loves it”, Nichols exclaims. The socialization and exercise that Doggie Daycare provides is an important aspect for a well-rounded pooch. All Tails is open for daycare EVERY day of the week! Going Holiday shopping, having a party, or watching the game? Drop them off at All Tails! Their new Self Service Salon has a walkin shower for larger breeds, two raised tub stations, high powered dryers and professional grooming tables. Customers are given a tote filled with towels, brushes,
grooming tools and great-smelling cologne. Nichols visited other basic “dog wash” facilities, and wanted people to have an upscale experience coming to All Tails. She definitely accomplished this! Don’t want to “do it yourself,” you can always call upon their professional grooming team. Their highly qualified groomers are ready to provide your pet with a fabulous grooming experience. Need training? “We have a variety of packages for every budget and issue. Daycare equals a happy, tired pooch. Training equals a happy, relieved pet owner! Our training has taken off and has been a great success, call us if you need help.” Nichols states. Compared to other kennels, All Tails has very spacious accommodations, starting at just $22 a day. The most economical lodging is their 4 ft x 14 ft run, which
includes three exercise/potty breaks a day. They currently boast 30 Private Deluxe Suites that are catered to only the most spoiled pets. These are secluded away from the main kennel area, making your pet’s experience a little more home-like and quiet. You can choose one with or without a patio, but all suites come with a TV, toddler bed, window and 4 outdoor breaks a day. “Simply put, We truly do have the best suites, Nichols states. The owner, Renee Nichols, graduated from Ohio State in 1993, and shortly thereafter decided to follow her love of animals. She started her grooming business in late ’94, then moved to the current location and again expanded in 1999 by building the original pet care center. The following year, she designed the first “Deluxe Suites” of their kind in Ohio. Unlike the big chain facilities, she prides
herself on working and running her own business, every day! “Customers love that I live on site, and know I’m always overseeing everything,” Nichols states. “They mention our Great Reviews, as well as complimenting me on such an awesome staff. We have a very friendly, yet experienced team, most of whom have been with us many years. I am very blessed.” All Tails is a member of the New Albany Chamber, and is just five miles east of the heart of New Albany, on old St. Rt. 161. If you need anything for your pet, please take a minute to look them up online at www.Alltails.com or call (740) 927-0555. “Come tour our facility anytime! Real Deals offers treasures for your home Michele Koester established Real Deals in 2012 ‘off the beaten path’ in charming Granville, Ohio (75 Westgate Drive, Granville). She calls herself the Chief Retail Therapist! “When you come to our store we’re there to help you relax a little bit and just shop. That’s the therapist—to make you feel good about what you’re doing. Plus, I like the idea of always having coffee and cookies—the very warm, fuzzy, mom and pop feel, she said. Since inception, Real Deals has grown to become one of the most popular home interior, women’s boutique and unique gift stores in central Ohio. Real Deals has been voted Licking County’s “Top Retail Destination as well as This Week Community News “Readers Choice Award winner.
Real Deals is a furniture, gift, boutique and home dĂŠcor store that sells all new merchandise, though the goods here seem to have the patina of history, and more interesting character than mass-produced products. It’s the way Real Deals sets itself apart. Michele’s favorite place to be is at Real Deals, working with customers to help them create homes that are lovely and livable, and that celebrate their own style. Customers travel many miles to this “shopping destinationâ€? to find treasures for their home, especially during the holidays. “Visiting Real Deals and getting to see and touch our collection of products is like a little vacation for people who are looking for that special something for their home,â€? said Koester. Items here are displayed in tableaus that allow shoppers to actually see how furniture, lamps, pillows and wall art complement one another, “We help pull the look together.â€?Real Deals is brimming with the bold, bright and beautiful at every glance. “We do our best to keep prices as low as possible, so you don’t have to feel married to the things in your home and can keep current with trends without the burden of high cost to do so,â€? said Koester. “That’s really important to us.â€? Therefore, she noted, the shop is located off the beaten path to keep operating costs low and is only open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays creating a shopping destination. The cost savings from those careful operating decisions are reflected back to customers in the reasonable prices of Real Deals’ goods. Many customers come into the store with a definite style or motif in mind, while others are a blank slate and want suggestions and help along the way. The
Owner Michele Koester readies her Real Deals store in Granville for the holiday season. Real Deals crew is there to assist at every level. Some clients email photographs of an existing space, seeking ways to spruce up, modernize or decorate for the season. “We’ll pull things together and bring it all to them. Sometimes people get mental blocks in their own homes, but we can come in with a fresh eye, and that can really help when someone is struggling with their own space. We are retail therapists, said Koester. “We just want people to enjoy where they live. Most of what is sold can be given as tasteful gifts, and one section of the store
includes jewelry, scarves and other bling for wearing instead of hanging on the walls. New merchandise comes in each week, so inventory changes frequently and stays on-trend. Weekly deals are offered on the shop’s Facebook site, at www.facebook.com/ GranvilleRealDeals. Real Deals is the ideal destination for a day of shopping.
