Every child deserves a good home... foster parents needed in Licking County!

Foster parents are needed to provide temporary homes and care for children who are unable to live in their own homes because their lives have been disrupted by family problems.

Children in need of foster homes are of all ages. Some children need care because of their parent’s problems; others have physical, emotional, or behavioral problems of their own. There are children and youth in our community, including sibling groups, children with special

needs, adolescents, and teenage mothers and their babies, for whom there are too few available foster homes. They need you to take a chance on them!

Children come under the care of Licking County Children Services through a variety of avenues. Some families voluntarily seek help from Children Services and ask that a foster home be provided for their children until their family crisis is over. The Juvenile Court may place children under the

The rules affecting children coming into foster care are set and monitored by state and federal laws.

Children in need of foster care are often confused and feel lost because they have been removed from a familiar way of living, into a home of strangers who live a lifestyle often unlike their own. Most children retain loyalties to their own parents despite the difficulties they may have experienced at home. They usually want to return to their birth families. The goal of foster care is to reunite the family, whenever possible. Helping to reunite a birth family is a special achievement a foster family can be proud of.

Foster parents need to be accepting of the temporary nature of foster care and are essential to helping a child move back to his or her family or move on to a permanent or adoptive home. Foster parents are age 21 or over and should be in good physical and emotional health. A foster home must meet state and federal requirements for housing safety, space, and equipment.

Foster parents regularly participate in training so they can provide the best possible care and be able to meet the unique needs of children in their care.

They have the skills, attitudes and stamina to effectively deal with the many behaviors and feelings displayed by children and youth.

Foster parents work cooperatively with the representatives of Children Services Foster Care and Adoption Services.

To become a foster parent, please contact Licking County Job & Family Services at (740) 6708725. A coordinator will speak with you about the process. There are informational and orientation meetings available. The required thirty-six hours of preservice training is offered three times a year by LCJFS. There is an application to become a licensed foster home by the State of Ohio.

The licensing process is called a

home study and one of our Foster Care Assessors will be assigned to see you through this process.

Your home study will provide you with a one-on-one evaluation of your family’s flexibility, stability, and compliance with State regulations. The home study takes several weeks.

Once you are licensed as a foster home, a child may be placed with you.

Licking County Children Services supports foster parents by providing on-going training.

Also, there is help available, on-call 24-7, to assist with problems or issues should they arise. Financial assistance may be available on a reimbursement per diem basis.

OhioMeansJobs | Licking County is the resource for connecting job seekers and employers OhioMeansJobs | Licking County (OMJ) assists job seekers with varying skillsets and backgrounds; from someone entering the workforce to those exploring new career fields. In addition to assisting job seekers, OMJ offers customized services to local employers.

OMJ provides services to meet the needs of employers who are new to the community as well as existing companies who are expanding or downsizing their workforce. OMJ is Licking County’s resource for connecting job seekers and employers.

Job Readiness Specialists are on staff and are available to help job seekers or individuals looking for a career change. They assess individual needs and tailor services to help meet their employment and training goals. Services include: resume writing, interview preparation, career exploration, employment referrals, job leads, employment and career advising, resources for training and education, job fairs, recruitment events, and job search resources.

OhioMeansJobs | Licking County also has Business Services Representatives who support local employers’ needs. They offer an assortment of services: advertising of available positions, distribution and collection of employer applications, pre-screening of qualified applicants, on and off-site recruitment events, and employer incentive programs.

OMJ is committed to developing Licking County’s future workforce. Youth and young adults ages 16-24 are helped with employment, education, and training needs. Services include: resume writing, interviewing skills, soft skills training and more. For the past several years, OhioMeansJobs | Licking County has helped recruit and determine eligibility for hundreds of Licking County youth for the summer employment program. This program provides

valuable work experience and an opportunity for eligible youth to earn a wage during the summer months.

OhioMeansJobs | Licking County successfully connects job seekers and employers In December of 2012 Owens Corning requested assistance with filling entry-level positions at their Newark facility. Owens is a well-respected company that has a long history in Licking County; the multinational manufacturer has been in the county since the 1930s.

OMJ advertised, recruited and assessed approximately 2,500 applicants. Owens Corning, through the assistance of OMJ, was able to attract great candidates. As a result of this relationship, Owens Corning hired approximately 90 people pre-screened by OMJ, with a retention rate of 87%.

In addition to recruiting, pre-screening and assessing applicants, OMJ was able to offer Owens Corning On-the-Job (OJT) training funds to offset the costs of training their newly hired staff. For every eligible candidate hired, Owens Corning had the potential to receive up to $6,000 in training wage reimbursement.

To date, the Owens Corning Newark plant has received $80,000 in OJT training reimbursements.

OMJ is proud of our partnership with Owens Corning. OMJ continues to assist Owens to screen for Electrical Apprentice applicants, entry level crew, and warehouse lift truck operators.

Screening of applicants includes WorkKeys® skills assessments. These assessments are beneficial in helping Owens select, hire, train, develop and retain a high-performance workforce.

Your support matters to Board of DD Since 1967, the Licking County Board of Developmental Disabilities has provided support to children, youth and adults in our community who have developmental disabilities. The term developmental disabilities describes a variety of conditions that impact the way people learn and acquire new skills. These conditions are either present at birth or develop before a person is 22 years old. About one in six children in the United States have a developmental disability or other developmental delay.

Common types of developmental disabilities include autism, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, epilepsy, intellectual disability and spina bifida. A developmental disability is life-long; there is no cure. However, everyone with a developmental disability is affected differently. Some people need little assistance to lead a full life. Others need substantial amounts of support and care to get through their daily routines.

The Board of Developmental Disabilities (DD) helps people discover, pursue and achieve what is important to them and their families.

The Board of DD provided needed supports to 1,597 Licking County families last year, and 90% received services every single day. This ongoing support is made possible by Licking County residents who support periodic tax levies. The money generated through local levies supplies early

intervention services to young children (including Licking County Help Me Grow); helps prepare youth for life after high school, and ensures that adults have a safe place to live and work, transportation, and the chance to be involved in our community.

The Licking County Board of DD pays for services provided by local agencies who are certified by the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities

(DoDD) to provide quality services. These agencies are independently owned and operated; however, they receive a substantial amount of funding from the Licking County Board of DD. Alvis House, Center for Disability Services, Community Living Experiences Inc., CSS, CSS James Street Day Habilitation Center, Friends of Jesus, Gathering Place of Licking County, Home Health

Connections, KICKS, LICCO Inc., Licking County Aging Program, Living in Family Environments, Midwest Community, Midwest Health Services, PALS, Respite Connections, Newark Resident Homes, SPARK and Viaquest Inc. all serve adults in Licking County.

The Licking County Board of DD also partners with several community organizations to offer services for Licking County citizens with developmental

disabilities. With financial assistance from our Board, Catholic Social Services, Licking County Coalition for Housing, Licking County Children and Families First Council, Licking County Special Olympics, Licking County Transit Board, Licking County Job and Family Services, Mental Health America of Licking County, OhioMeansJobs | Licking County, Pathways of Central Ohio, West Licking County Special Olympics and the Licking County Family YMCA provide services and needed supports to Licking County citizens who have developmental disabilities.

Feel the history and the future at the Buxton Inn In Granville there is a unique part of American History called the Buxton Inn. For more than 200 years many people have visited, eaten a meal and stayed overnight. Some people have been more notable than others, like Harriet Beecher Stowe, YoYo Ma, and yes, even President Lincoln. The Buxton was an early stagecoach stop, saw the War of 1812, and was part of the Underground Railroad. The history is intriguing and the future is exciting!

The Inn was purchased from long-time owners Orville and Audrey Orr in December of 2014. The new owners have been working continuously renovating all 25 guest rooms, undergoing a major restaurant overhaul, and developing event space. The look and feel of the Buxton has changed, all the while preserving the past.

The setup of the Inn is unique with 25 guest rooms in five historic homes, all of which have a different layout and style. The houses span almost the whole village block on the corner of Broadway and Pearl Street. You can stay in the Main House in one of the Inn’s original guest rooms, the Warner House that dates back to 1815, Founders Hall that features mid-19th century architecture, or the newest home, Ty Fy Mam, a Sears Catalog House built in 1920.

As for the restaurant, a major overhaul doesn’t do it justice! The Buxton is now open for lunch

during the week and is featuring an all-new menu that includes some old favorites, as well as some newer, more modern fare.

Entrees like Seafood Chesapeake stay on the menu, but new items like Apple Braised Pork Ossso Buco and Shrimp and Grits, bring a more modern flair. They also offer an extensive wine list, as well as a variety of handcrafted cocktails and local brews. All desserts are made in house by the new pastry chef. The Inn prides itself on being a “scratch-kitchen”, providing guests with fresh, quality ingredients and a high level of service.

Consider having your next family reunion, birthday, wedding, anniversary party or business meeting at the Buxton. The inn can now accommodate parties up to 150 guests in the newly renovated outside courtyard.

Licking Park District: “Your 1,600-Acre Backyard” Research has shown that spending time outdoors is great for your brain, your mood and overall well-being. Good reasons to take advantage of the Licking Park District’s 1,600+ acres of parks and over 40 miles of paved bike trails within Licking County.

Just south of Granville on Route 37 is Infirmary Mound Park, with over 300 acres to roam. There are over seven miles of multi-use trails (hiking, biking and equestrian), 7-acre Mirror Lake which is great for fishing and birdwatching, and a 4-acre dog park to bring your furry friend. Four shelters are available to rent for your next family reunion or celebration, and the James Bradley Senior Center has heat and air conditioning for year-round gatherings.

Lobdell Reserve just east of Alexandria has over seven miles of multi-use trails through meadows, woodlands and along Lobdell Creek. A tournament level 18-hole disc golf course attracts amateurs and enthusiasts alike through this scenic course.

Taft Reserve is our largest park, with over 400 acres southeast of Newark off of Linnville Road. Nearly nine miles of trails take you through forests, meadows, and past two ancient Mound structures. Enjoy lunch at our picnic grove at the north parking lot on Flint Ridge Road, or explore Hog Run on the south side along Fairview Road.

Riverview Preserve in south Newark is home to a canoe and kayak launch, allowing easy access to the Licking River for boating and fishing. There is a parking lot for about 60 cars and a large grassy field for playing.

Watch for the blue heron and kingfishers as you float down the river.

The over 40 miles of paved bike trails criss-cross the County. Start at the trailhead in Johnstown, and you can go east on the TJ Evans Trail through Alexandria, Granville, and follow the Raccoon Creek into Newark. Heading east from Newark you will follow the Panhandle Trail, which parallels the active rail line past Marne, Hanover, and the Longeberger Country Club to the county line. A section of the bike trail heads through Heath, crosses Irving-Wick Boulevard, and heads south along the old Buckeye Scenic Line to Rt 40. The Ohio Canal Greenway trail starts in Canal Park in Hebron and travels under a covered bridge, by the state fish hatchery, and ends along a watered section of the original canal at Route 79. Each of these trails follows old rail lines, and are relatively level trails that would be great to ride on for any age and ability. Bike trail maps can be found at the park office, and at several tourist locations throughout the County.

Getting outdoors often involves getting active or learning more about your environment. The Licking Park District holds many hikes, programs and events throughout the year to keep you moving and to share with you the wonders of our natural world. Outdoor Adventures, held on the first Sunday in May, is the kickoff to Turn Your Screen Off Week, and has boating, biking, disc golf, geocaching, archery and other outdoor recreational opportunities for you and your family to try. We hold Saturday morning hikes each month, as well as Full Moon Hikes to explore the parks after dark. A Nature Barn at Infirmary Mound Park is open each weekend in the summer with activities. Each October the Harvest Moon Rendezvous, a pre-1840’s encampment, reenacts life of this period, including cooking, black powder and stories.
