Mount Carmel transforming healthcare in Grove City with community’s first full-service hospital Mount Carmel opened the doors of its specialty healthcare campus in Grove City a little more than two years ago. Since then, it’s become a destination for patients in southern central Ohio and before long it will have space for a lot more.

Construction is already underway to expand the health system’s current Grove City campus, which currently features a 24-hour emergency department, imaging and lab services, women’s health center and medical office building, into a full-service hospital. And not just any full-service hospital; one that will set new standards for safety, serenity and peoplecentered care.

The new hospital will feature 210 private rooms and seven floors of clinical service, including inpatient and outpatient surgery, intensive care, a mother-infant and level III neonatal intensive care unit, oncology and palliative care.

The expansion will also nearly double the size of the existing emergency department.

Connected to the hospital will be a new five-story medical office building with outpatient oncology, women’s health services, maternal fetal medicine and physician offices, expanding on the exceptional primary care, cardiac, rehabilitative and other specialty services offered in the current campus office building.

The campus also will be the new headquarters for Mount Carmel’s Graduate Medical Education programs.

supports superior outcomes, safety and high-quality care, but also puts the focus on the patient experience. That’s why the new campus was designed with flexible clinical space that promotes care coordination and allows patients and families to be engaged in their care from the very beginning.

There will be a number of progressive features on campus, too, including easy-to-navigate pathways throughout the facility and a bistro-style dining area with a variety of menu options.

Beyond that patients and visitors will find serene views, abundant natural light, peaceful respite areas, generous greenspace, walking trails and roof gardens throughout the campus.

“Everything we’ve done when it comes to planning, designing and building this hospital has been focused on our patients, their families and the community.

Our goal is to create the kind of experience that will exceed their expectations in every respect,” said Mount Carmel West President Sean McKibben.

“We envisioned a campus that inspires comfort, confidence and

compassionate care, and we’re excited to see it come to life.”

That planning has been evident in the campus’ ability to maintain all of its existing emergency and outpatient services during construction.

And progress is evident. Two cranes now stand guard over the area of the campus where the new patient tower will be, foundation work is underway and a new access road – Mount Carmel Lane – is under construction between Hoover Road and North Meadows Drive. Two cameras, which are viewable at mountcarmelhealth. com, are documenting the entire $355 million project, which will officially open its doors in late 2018.

On that day, it will become the first hospital in the market south of the Interstate 70 corridor and greatly expand access to care for the rapidly growing Grove City community and beyond.

“Mount Carmel is already the healthcare home for many residents of Grove City and the surrounding area,” McKibben added, “and we’re very proud of that fact. It may have a lot to do

with why we’ve been so embraced by the community. Our goal with this expansion is that we’ll be able to continue to meet their needs for generations to come.”

The expansion at Mount Carmel’s Grove City campus is part of an even larger transformation plan at Mount Carmel that also will include a modernization of Mount Carmel East and revitalization of Mount Carmel West.

These projects are part of the system’s bold vision for redefining healthcare in central Ohio by delivering better health, better care for an affordable cost. That means an increased focus on wellness rather than simply treating patients when they’re sick. While there will always be the need for exceptional inpatient care, Mount Carmel is looking to reshape its services to better serve the evolving healthcare needs of central Ohio residents.

All in all, Mount Carmel will spend more than $700 million on the three campus transformations, with the goal of leading the effort to deliver more personal, people-centered care across central Ohio.

Some great examples of this progressive, proactive, peoplecentered direction are already in place on the Grove City campus.

One is Walk with a Doc, a free, bi-monthly community walking program that’s been part of Mount Carmel’s Grove City tradition since the campus first opened. On the first and third Saturday of every month from April through October, healthconscious community members gather on campus at 9:00 a.m. to do two things – talk with a doc and go for a walk.

Each event is hosted by a Mount Carmel physician, who shares some helpful information with the group on a health topic of interest. After that, the doctor(s) and walkers head out on a scenic trek around campus. In addition to enjoying the many health benefits that come from the exercise, people can talk with the docs while they walk, getting advice and answers to their health-related questions.

“In our minds, the future of healthcare, especially at Mount Carmel, begins with wellness,” McKibben said. “That’s why we’re so excited to have programs like Walk with a Doc on campus in Grove City and why they’re going to be such a big part of what we do here going forward.”

The upcoming walk on Saturday, May 7 will be hosted

by Mount Carmel fellowshiptrained breast surgeons Dr. Bridget O’Brien and Dr. Shilpa Padia. Both doctors see patients in the medical office building on the Grove City campus. It will not only be a great opportunity to learn about cutting-edge therapies for breast cancer treatment, but also to hear why they chose Grove City and to personally see all the progress happening on campus. The future of healthcare is clearly bright in Grove City, and Mount Carmel’s expanding Grove City campus and the brand-new, full-service hospital that soon will be its centerpiece, are two of the biggest reasons why. The good news is, that future will be here before we know it.

Six steps to creating fairy gardens for kids Gardening can be an enjoyable activity for adults and children alike. Gardening encourages creative thinking and can make for an eco-friendly activity as well.

Adding a touch of whimsy to gardening can make it that much more attractive to children.

Perhaps that is why fairy gardens have become so popular among youngsters. Fairy gardens can be designed in outdoor gardens or in containers that children can nurse and enjoy indoors. Here are six steps to get your fairy garden up and running.

1. Choose your container or location. Decide where to place the fairy garden. Hollowed-out tree stumps are both contained and outdoors, and kids may feel like the fairies inhabited this neglected area of the yard and made it their own. Otherwise, use containers you already have, such as old pots, hanging baskets, picnic baskets or cookie tins.

roofs removed also can make for clever places to house the gardens.

2. Choose a theme. Fairy houses can take on any theme their creators prefer. Themes help children decide what to include in their gardens. For example, a seaside retreat may work well with little reclining chairs, sea grasses and succulents. You can then complete the theme by adding some seashells and colored stones.

3. Draw up your design.

Before securing anything in the container or digging into your garden bed, sketch out a garden design. This gives you an idea of how the finished product will look. Even before planting, gently place plants and other components in their spots and move them around accordingly until you find the desired look.

4. Include similar-needs plants. Mixing plants that have different requirements can make it challenging to care for the

fairy garden, so select plants that require similar levels of sunlight, prefer similar soil conditions and require roughly the same amount of watering. Herbs are a smart choice because they stay small and are easily maintained.

5. Don’t forget a fairy dwelling. You will need to add a house for the fairies to inhabit.

Small bird houses can work, but you also can consider old teapots, bird-nesting boxes or even homemade houses assembled out of bark and twigs. Use your imagination and the garden will take on a life of its own.

6. Invite the fairies. Children can invite fairies to take up residence (fairies often show up at night and tend to remain unseen), or children can create their own fairies using craft materials.

Fairy gardens are a fun way to introduce children to gardeing.

Once families get started, they may want to create entire fairy villages.

Do cats and dogs really fight like cats and dogs?

Cats and dogs have long been depicted as ardent foes, consistently getting into scrapes with one another. But are those claims exaggerated?

Many cats and dogs peacefully coexist in their homes, where their divergent personalities combine to make homes more interesting. Cats and dogs tend to have different body language, but that should not be mistaken for opposition.

Take, for example, a boisterous puppy who excitedly approaches visitors with its tail wagging to show friendliness. According to the animal experts at SlimDoggy.com, a resource for dog food, fitness and fun, cats interpret wagging tails as signs of anger or displeasure. Dogs like to sniff their “friends” and get to know them, and cats don’t favor this attention.

When sniffed, cats may run off, unintentionally triggering dogs’ natural predator instincts.

Such an instance is a rough way for cats and dogs to begin a relationship, and it’s easy to see how such an introduction can lay a poor foundation for their relationship.

Cats and dogs also have different social styles.

While a cat may be content to be alone and approach visitors cautiously, dogs tend to be sociable and rush into situations if they think there is fun to be had.

But cats and dogs can peacefully coexist. One way to foster a good relationship between cats and dogs is to control their initial

calm behavior with treats.

Repeat these steps until the pets appear to be used to each other.

It’s important that pet owners recognize that, while cats and dogs may peacefully coexist in a

home most of the time, their natural instincts may kick in every so often. Just separate the pets if they have a tiff.

Rumors abound that cats and dogs can’t share a home, but that’s simply

not true. With some early socialization, patience on the part of pet owners and an understanding of cat and dog behaviors, pet parents can ensure both cats and dogs live together in harmony.

furnishing pet owners a place to exercise and socialize their dogs off leash; and a disk golf course located on the campus of the Grove City Church of the Nazarene.

The Grove City Parks and Recreation Department is committed to expanding recreational opportunities for and connecting to the greater central Ohio region. The City donated 193 acres to the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks toward the development of the 620-acre Scioto Grove Metro Park on the eastern edge of Grove City.

The park capitalizes on its location along the Scioto River banks to offer fishing and boating access supplementing shelters, hiking and biking paths, play areas and more.

The grand opening for the first phase is Friday, May 6.

As the population and structure of Grove City continue to evolve, the Parks and Recreation Department explores opportunities to expand offerings at existing and potential park space as it works to achieve the goal of a fully interconnected community, integrating miles of new bike and leisure paths into infrastructure development. Current projects include historic restoration of the Gantz Homestead and the addition of a new park in the southeast quadrant of Grove City.

Make weeknight meals healthy and simple Households in which both parents work and kids have school and extracurricular commitments can get a little hectic, particularly on weeknights. Parents who want to prepare nutritious dinners may feel it’s impossible to do so without making elaborate, time-consuming recipes.

But there are ways for busy, time-strapped parents to make sure weeknight dinners are both healthy and simple.

• Stock a healthy pantry. When grocery shopping, purchase some healthy nonperishable foods that you can rely on in a pinch. Instead of stocking the freezer with unhealthy yet easily prepared frozen foods that are often loaded with saturated fat, stock your pantry with whole grain pastas. Whole grain pastas are lower in calories and higher in fiber and contain more nutrients than refined white pastas. And once water is boiled, whole grain pastas can be prepared in roughly 10 minutes.

Caregiver stress can manifest itself in many different ways, including physical and emotional problems. The following are some ways to handle the stress of caring for a sick and/or elderly relative.

• Investigate available resources. Explore all of the opportunities in your area that may relieve some of the burden of caring for your loved one. These may include in-home visiting care services, meal delivery, adult activity programs and more.

• Ask for help. Find out if responsibilities can be split among other family members, giving each person a chance to rest and recuperate.

• Get physical. Physical activity in any form can help reduce stress and improve feelings of well-being, offers the Alzheimer’s Association. Go for a walk, take an exercise class or ride a bicycle. Expect to feel more relaxed and less stressed after physical activity.

• Speak with a therapist. Discuss your feelings with someone not directly related to your family or circle of friends. Caregivers may have feelings of anger, depression and anxiety, and may even be in denial about how much care this person really needs.

Talking about your feelings with a professional can put them into perspective.

• Focus on things you can control. You may not be able to cure the illness or disability, but there are things in your control. Rather than dwelling on things beyond your control, try to improve the things you can control.

• Try to have fun. It’s easy to make caregiving the only part of your life. However, you have to leave room for letting off steam. Don’t feel guilty about going out with friends or a spouse. Make time for yourself.

Fitness tips for busy moms Working mothers have a lot on their plates. In addition to the responsibilities that come with raising a family, working moms also must focus on their careers.

Many mothers find that managing such hectic balancing acts leaves little time for physical fitness. But there are ways for working moms to stay physically fit even as they juggle their commitments to career and family.

• Work out in the early morning.

Working out in the early morning, when the kids are still asleep and the office has yet to open, is a great way for busy working mothers to get their daily exercise.

Designate a room in your home where you can spend time each morning doing some light strength training before hitting the treadmill or elliptical machine. The United States Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity each week, and women who get up just 45 minutes earlier each morning can meet those requirements and then some. An added benefit to working out in the early morning is that many people who follow such regimens insist they have more energy throughout the rest of the day.

• Exercise with the kids. Working mothers looking to find time for exercise can turn part of family time into a time to exercise with their children. Play in the yard with youngsters while dinner is cooking or go for nightly post-meal walks.

Exercising with kids is a great way for mothers to get their daily exercise while also instilling a love of physical activity in their children.

• Have a backup plan on hand. Working out at a gym can be motivational, as many mothers want to make sure their monthly membership fees aren’t going to waste. But there will inevitably be days when working mothers can’t get to the gym.

Prepare for such days by purchasing home workout DVDs you can play while the kids are doing their homework or after they have gone to bed.

• Look for gyms with childcare.

Many gyms now offer on-site childcare to parents of young children who can’t stay home alone while their folks are at the gym. Gyms that offer on-site childcare may prove more reliable and even less expensive than hiring a sitter, and some gyms even offer fitness programs to youngsters, helping to ensure kids get the daily exercise they need as well.

• Exercise during lunch breaks. If possible, squeeze in your daily exercise during lunch breaks. Take advantage of on-site exercise facilities if your company offers them. If not, take your lunch outside and then go for a walk around the campus or a nearby park rather than eating at your desk.

Finding time to exercise is a common dilemma for working mothers. But there are some creative ways for moms to stay fit without affecting their commitments to work and family.

According to the 2015 TripBarometer study from popular travel website TripAdvisor, travelers across the globe are open to spending more on travel in 2016 than they have in the past. The study, conducted on behalf of TripAdvisor by the independent research firm Ipsos, analyzed more than 44,000 responses from travelers and hoteliers across the globe. Thirty-three percent of respondents plan to spend more on travel in 2016 than they did in 2015, while 31 percent admitted that they plan to spend more on travel because it’s important for their health and well-being.
