It is a well-known fact that more than 36 percent of Americans are considered obese and more than 60 percent are either overweight or obese, per the National Health Examination Survey (NHES). The number keeps increasing, and one prediction is that by 2030, over half of our population will be considered obese. With obesity, serious medical conditions may be present or the individual may be at increased risk. These medical conditions include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, sleep disorders, orthopedic problems, certain types of cancer, etc. In fact, 11 types of cancer have been associated with obesity. For an individual who has excess weight, it is important to speak to his/her doctor about the impact of excess body weight on overall health. There are self-help and commercial programs, or one may be interested in a personalized approach to weight loss and health. A weight loss of 10 percent has shown to improve one’s health, and is considered a medically significant weight loss. Although there are many medical reasons to lose weight, many people want to lose weight for personal reasons as well. Some want to look or feel better. Others may want to improve their mobility to be able to enjoy more activities with their families. Whatever the reason, it is important just to get started. Small steps at first can lead to large improvements in health and quality of life. The Central Ohio Nutrition Center Inc. (CONCI) offers a comprehensive weight management program staffed by health professionals, physicians, and registered dietitian nutritionists. The nutrition center was established in 1979, and in almost 40 years has helped many patients lose weight and improve their health and quality of life! The comprehensive approach at CONCI includes nutrition, lifestyle changes, and medical monitoring. Many programs are

available at the center, and are individualized for each patient depending on his/her medical and weight history, and preferences. Options for weight loss include Optifast TM, a total meal replacement program. This program is structured, and provides safe, effective weight loss. It was originally developed in the 1970s, is scientifically based, and has been well-researched. Also available is a partial meal replacement program using two to three Optifasts per day plus regular food. For the patient who prefers a more traditional diet, a low-calorie plan is personalized by the dietitian to the patient’s lifestyle and preferences. Another option is the use of anti-obesity medications along with a dietary plan and lifestyle change. The professional staff at the Central Ohio Nutrition Center has had years of experience and success using drug therapy in conjunction with a comprehensive program. Each patient is thoroughly evaluated before starting any program. During active weight loss, the patient is supported and monitored by both the dietitian and physician. Also offered are group classes on healthy eating, behavior change, and most importantly, maintenance of weight loss. Long-term weight maintenance is a focus of the Central Ohio Nutrition Center! Diets alone are not enough. It takes a multidisciplinary healthcare team which provides support, education, and in some cases medical supervision. In addition, continued vigilance and lifestyle change are the cornerstones of successful weight maintenance. The Central Ohio Nutrition Center has four offices located around Columbus. The main office is in Gahanna at 648 Taylor Rd. If you are interested in scheduling a free information session or have questions about services, call our main location at 614-8647225 or visit our website at www. CONCI. com.

How to build your home bar

Many people enjoy opening their homes to friends or family. In fact, according to the National Eating Trends survey and custom research by the NPD group, in 2016 the average person ate 38 meals at other people’s homes. Knowing how to cook, set the mood and entertain is increasingly important for many homeowners. Installing and outfitting a home bar can provide guests with the features of a night out, only without the crowds or bar tabs that come at the end of the night. A home bar is a place where hosts and their guests can gather and enjoy great conversation. Such a spot also can serve as a neighborhood hangout Ñ a smart choice for those who want to indulge safely and not have to drive home afterward. Creating a home bar need not be a difficult project. By investing in basic equipment, stocking up on preferred liquors and gaining some mixology expertise, hosts can impress and entertain their guests.

Establish a bar setup

Home bars can range from rolling carts to built-in wet bars to a single tray of items. Space in a home will dictate the kind of bar homeowners can have. Rolling bar carts are popular and versatile, and they can be kept stationary or rolled in and out of a room as needed. If a bar cart is open, organization is key, as you don’t want it to look unkempt. A full-blown wet bar will require more construction, including plumbing and electricity if you need outlets for plugging in appliances. Wet bars are ideal in dens, renovated garages and finished basements.

Stock up on equipment

A new home bar requires barware and glassware. Various drinks are best served in requisite glassware and prepared with the right equipment. A home bar will benefit from a muddler, jigger, cocktail shaker, strainer, ice cube trays, and bar spoon. Glassware can include short glasses, tall glasses and wine glasses with stems. Martini glasses provide a chic look and are practical for those who prefer cosmopolitans and martinis.

Fill it with spirits

No bar is complete without alcohol and mixers. Homeowners can buy the types of spirits they love and complete their bars with the basics for mixing. When stocking a bar, keep in mind that everything does not have to be top-shelf. Vodka, gin, tequila, rum, and whiskey are some of the more popular spirits. Simple syrup, fresh fruit, club soda, cola, and bitters are examples of versatile mixers. Entertaining guru Martha Stewart says to have enough supplies on hand for guests. Expect each person to have three drinks (requiring three glasses), use a pound of ice, and three cocktail napkins per two-hour party. Don’t forget to also have nonalcoholic items on hand for those who don’t imbibe.

Featuring a state-of-the art therapy gym, private and semi-private suites, a courtyard and more!

Defining hardscape and how to use it Curb appeal is beneficial in various ways. Curb appeal can make a home more attractive to prospective buyers and give existing homeowners a place they want to come home to. In its study of the worth of outdoor remodeling projects, the National Association of Realtors found standard lawn care and overall landscape upgrades were most appealing to buyers, as well as the most likely to add value to a home. Although plants, grass and other items can improve curb appeal, homeowners should not overlook hardscaping. Hardscaping is an industry term that refers to the non-living features of a landscape. These features can include everything from decks to walkways to ornamental boulders. Introducing paths or paver walls to a property helps develop that home’s hardscape. Hardscape and soft elements often work in concert to create inspiring landscape designs. DIY landscape designers can heed certain tips to make the most of hardscape features on their properties.

Choose materials.

example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal. The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive.

Think about the purpose.

Hardscaping can look good but also serve key purposes. Pebbles or gravel can mitigate trouble areas that don’t grow grass or plant life well. Retaining walls hold back soil in yards with sharply inclined hills. Mulch can set perimeters around trees and shrubs, as well as planting beds. Fencing, another form of hardscaping, is essential for establishing property boundaries and adding privacy.

Consult a professional.

As with many landscaping projects, homeowners must first determine what types of additions they would like on their properties. Common hardscape features include patios, decks, walkways of pavers or bricks, and retaining walls. Hardscape elements can be functional or simply decorative features that add whimsy to the yard.

Choose a theme.

The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For

Did you know? Outdoor remodels and landscaping projects can add valuable curb appeal to homes. The National Association of Realtors and the National Association of Landscape Professionals agree that certain projects offer significant returns when selling a home. The NAR says these are the 10 most appealing outdoor features to buyers. • Standard lawn care • Overall landscape upgrade • New patio • New wood deck • Softscaping

• Sod lawn • Seed lawn • Outdoor firepit • Outdoor fireplace • New pool

While many hardscaping additions can be handled by novices, large-scale projects, such as patios and decking, can change the grading of the yard. Professionals can map out how to handle drainage issues and meet building codes. In addition, professional installation can ensure hardscaping features last for years to come. Hardscaping should blend with the nature around it and take its cues from the surrounding environment. This can help softscaping and hardscaping work as one.

Otterbein SeniorLife looks to the future by updating its brand BY CORINNE MINARD Otterbein SeniorLife has served seniors in the community for more than 100 years, but there is nothing old-fashioned about it. In fact, Otterbein has recently undergone a complete brand identity change to better reflect the Otterbein of today and tomorrow. “We’ve grown significantly over the last several years,” says Samantha Burnett, marketing and communications manager for Otterbein SeniorLife. “We wanted a fresh new look to kind of bond our existing ministries together.” Previously called Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices, the name was shortened to Otterbein SeniorLife to better describe the services offered by Otterbein. “Our CEO said, ‘Let’s see if we can get this down to one word that describes what Otterbein is.’ So that was our challenge,” says Burnett. “We came up with a compound word that we created. It’s about your life, your lifestyle, and being able to keep as much freedom and independence as possible no matter what level of care you need.” Under the previous name, Otterbein’s many services were separated, and even identified with different colors. Otterbein offers home health care and hospice care in southwest Ohio in addition to its retirement communities and skilled nursing neighborhoods throughout the state, but Burnett says that people are sometimes not aware of all that Otterbein does. “Because our Lebanon community is so large and has been around for so long people automatically think of Otterbein Lebanon when they think of Otterbein but we have these other beautiful, wonderful, innovative neighborhoods in New Albany and Gahanna in Columbus and

throughout Southwest Ohio,” she says. In the last four years, Otterbein has greatly expanded, adding four new communities and three additions on the Lebanon campus. Otterbein SeniorLife has retirement neighborhoods in New Albany and Gahanna that offer residents the ability keep as much freedom and independence as possible no matter what level of care is needed. The biggest growth has occurred in what Burnett calls small-house neighborhoods. Designed for seniors seeking rehabilitation or long-term care, the facilities are built to be like homes instead of a hospital. “It looks like you’re driving into a neighborhood. You’ll ring the doorbell and go in and it’s a big great room, a big kitchen, every resident that lives there has their own room and bathroom, there’s a den, they do all therapy in house,” she says. “Family is encouraged to come by and make meals or celebrate holidays or do whatever they would do at grandmother’s house normally. So it’s set up like a real home.” Otterbein SeniorLife is the largest provider of this type of facility in the country. While much has changed, Otterbein remains committed to many of the values it was founded on 106 years ago. “We still represent a faith-based organization. There’s a cross in our new logo in the infinity symbol, kind of illustrating the limitless choices that we have available here and available in life in general and unlimited potential for continued growth of quality of care,” says Burnett.
