Passionately Putting Clients’ Best Interests First
Backed by more than 90 years of collective experience, broad expertise, and a deep-seated desire to see clients succeed, Keeler & Nadler sets standards high.
The Keeler & Nadler Team Not all financial advisors are created equal. They might have similar titles and offer similar services, but there is a wide spectrum in credentials, how they’re compensated, and whose needs they’re really prioritizing. When clients choose Keeler & Nadler Financial Planning and Wealth Management, they can rest assured they’ve chosen wisely. Keeler & Nadler adheres to the highest fiduciary standards—meaning they make recommendations in clients’ best interests, not just suitable interests. They aren’t motivated by commissions; they are motivated to see clients succeed. “We have always put our clients’ interests ahead of our own,” says Founder and President Andy Keeler. “We work for the good of our clients, not for ourselves.”
Credentials and Education
Clients of the firm typically have more than $1 million in investable assets. Very few have simple financial scenarios – and that’s a good thing. “I joke with prospective clients that I’m going to love working with them because their situations are so complex,” Keeler says. The team relishes a good challenge because they’re robustly equipped to handle them. Their staff roster includes CPAs, CFP®s, an MBA, and an attorney. All three founders have taught financial planning classes at The Ohio State University—a service Keeler believes helps elevate the entire industry to serve the public as well as possible. The firm also believes in the power of educating clients. “One of the biggest determinants of an individual’s ability to build wealth is their own behavior,” Keeler says. “Educating clients on how the market works gives them a good foundation for making sound financial decisions.”
Maximizing Each Client’s Potential
Because each client’s situation is unique, the firm aims to ensure there are no “missed opportunities” in a client’s portfolio. That might include tax efficiencies, social security strategies, insurance planning, or any number of strategies that will promote financial security. “We look at all the pieces and arrange them so that they fit together for the client’s desired outcome,” Keeler says. In the end, a job well done isn’t measured by the firm’s financial success. “It’s a hug, a hand-written thank-you card, and clients that turn into friends,” Keeler says. “Our firm’s success is proof that when you do the right thing for people, it’ll pay dividends.”

“Where’s The Line?” campaign seeks to empower bystanders to take action on abuse First, take a moment to pat yourself on the back. Reading this article is an important step toward educating yourself about family violence and abuse. Where’s The Line? is a first-of-its-kind campaign that launched in 2015. The campaign’s goal is to educate the community about how to recognize and appropriately respond to signs of family violence and abuse. Where’s The Line? is an active bystander campaign. But who is a bystander? In this instance, it’s anyone who thinks they’ve witnessed or suspected abuse, but isn’t directly involved in the abuse. Everyone will likely be a bystander at some point in their lives, whether that’s seeing their high school friend become involved in an unhealthy dating relationship, or seeing a child being verbally or physically abused in a grocery store. Where’s The Line? is meant to empower bystanders to take action by providing confidential answers and advice about abuse. Based in central Ohio, the resource line is managed by an Information Coordinator Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Individuals can call 844-234-LINE (5463), text 87028 or chat at WheresTheLine.info. It is important for everyone to be able to recognize the signs of family violence. Family violence is an umbrella term for child maltreatment and neglect, teen dating abuse, domestic violence and elder abuse. Unfortunately, it’s more common than you might think. Here are some nationwide quick statistics: • A report of child abuse is made every 10 seconds. • 1 in 3 adolescents is a victim of physical, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner. • 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner. • In nearly 2/3 of elder abuse cases, the abuser is a family member (adult child or spouse). So what do these numbers tell us? We all likely know or will know someone who is directly impacted by abuse. Sometimes, bystanders don’t step up when they see something for fear of being wrong. To that, we say, “But what if you’re right, and you’re the only person who will make the call?” Now that we’ve got the basics covered, you might be wondering “What can I do to help?” Bystanders should remember the three “Rs” - recognize, respond and refer.
Recognize the Signs and Behaviors
Abuse can be physical, emotional, verbal, sexual, financial, digital or resource restrictive. It’s important to know that all types of abuse have something in common: power and control. The Center for Family Safety and Healing provides details on how to recognize if a child, teen, adult or elderly person is being abused or neglected.
Signs of Child Abuse/ Neglect
• Unexplained or repeated injuries or bruising • Behavioral changes, such as a child being withdrawn, quiet or angry • Wariness of physical contact
Signs of Teen Dating Abuse • Giving up things that are important • Isolation from friends • Apologizing for partner’s behavior
Signs of Domestic Violence • Claims of being clumsy or accident prone • Tardiness or absenteeism at work
• Receiving constant harassing phone calls/texts from partner
Signs of Elder Abuse
• Untreated physical problems, such as bed sores • Caregiver’s refusal to allow anyone to see the elder alone • Unusual weight loss, malnutrition or dehydration
Visit WheresTheLine.info/ signs to learn more about signs of abuse. Respond Appropriately
It’s important to consider your own safety first, as well as the safety of others, when you feel that a situation may escalate and become violent or dangerous. For example, if you see a couple arguing in a restaurant, and one of the partners begins slamming objects and making threats to the other partner, it wouldn’t be safe for you or other bystanders to directly intervene. In a violent situation, responding can mean calling 911 or security. However, if there is a scenario where your friend might be in an unhealthy or abusive relationship, responding might mean talking to your friend one-on-one, letting him or her know you’re concerned about their well-being and safety, and addressing the unhealthy behaviors that you’ve witnessed. When thinking about responding to an act of abuse or violence, think to yourself, “If it was my friend or family member who was being abused in this situation, would I want someone to act?” So now, you’ve learned that you need to first be able to recognize the signs and behaviors of abuse and family violence, and then respond appropriately, always considering your own safety and the safety of others around you. We’ve covered two of the three “Rs”. One more to go!
Refer to Resources
There are many resources available, both local and national, to help victims of abuse. For example, if you suspect
child abuse or neglect in your community, did you know that anyone can make a report anonymously to the Franklin County Children Services 24/7 Child Abuse Hotline by calling 614-2297000? Or, if you know a teen or young adult who might be in an unhealthy or abusive relationship, they can check out LoveIsRespect where advocates are available 24/7. To reach a LoveIsRespect advocate, call 1-866-331-9474, text “loveis” to 22522 or chat at loveisrespect. org. In this case, you might also go to a trusted adult, such as a parent or school counselor, to let them know that you’re concerned for a classmate. Or maybe you know an adult in your life who is trying to leave an abusive relationship, but he or she isn’t sure where
to start. You can refer them to the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-7997233 or to the website, TheHotline.org, where there are advocates available 24/7 to provide answers to questions and help with safety planning. If you’re unsure what to do when it comes to responding and referring, you can always contact Where’s The Line? for confidential answers and advice. No matter the situation or who is involved, there are many resources available to victims and bystanders. We all play a role in breaking the cycle of family violence and abuse. You can help raise awareness by sharing this article and our website, WheresTheLine.info, with friends and family, so that they too can become empowered, active bystanders.

mtek media – Preserving Memories Since 2006 Dublin native Mark Mahaffey founded mtek media in 2005 at the age of 15, and now, 12 years later, his business is stronger than ever. Working out of an office in historic Dublin, Mark explained that mtek media offers two primary services. First, they can take all of your VHS tapes and film reels and convert them to a DVD or a flash drive. According to Mark, most customers come in with a grocery sack full of VHS tapes, but no equipment to play the tapes on. They realize these tapes will go bad after about 15 years, and if they don’t do something, their special memories will be lost forever. At just $13 per tape, it is much cheaper than other preservation alternatives. The second offering works just like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. Imagine snapping your fingers and like magic, you can watch all of your converted VHS tapes on a private video channel, as easily as you watch movies on Netflix. Utilizing a private channel, each customer has their own User ID and password. The private video channel is free. The customer simply pays mtek media to set up the private channel and upload the videos. Mark went on to explain that most customers have not viewed their tapes in years. It’s always interesting when they watch old footage from a special vacation or birthday party. Often times, they forgot they even recorded these events. There are usually many laughs, and many tears. It’s a rewarding
mtek-media.com
experience to assist our customers in preserving their memories forever. On the flip side, Mark also expressed how devastating and sad it is when he receives tapes that haven’t been viewed for a while, and they are ruined. Over time, tapes become dry and brittle, almost like a leaf in autumn, and there is nothing that can be done to save the tapes or the memories. For $13 per tape, and a little help from Mark, those old tapes could have been preserved forever.

Clever costumes can be made from items already on hand.
Recycled Halloween costumes Nothing says Halloween like the perfect costume. Children may spend months thinking about what they will wear and how they can bring their favorite characters from movies, comics and books to life. Billions of dollars are spent each year on Halloween costumes, advises the National Retail Federation. Many of these costumes are worn just once. The environmental group Recycle Nation states that Halloween costumes are often made with low-value materials like petroleum-based polyester and a mix of other materials. Financially savvy environmentalists may lament that Halloween costumes can be wasteful and potentially harmful to the environment. Recycling and reusing these garments can quell such concerns.
Use recycled materials
Pinterest is awash with ideas for turning different materials into homemade Halloween costumes. With a little creativity, boxes, paper bags, plastic water bottles, and more can be upcycled into costumes at little or no cost. Afterwards, costumes can be broken down and individual parts can be recycled. Parents also can look for items around the house that potentially can be used to make costumes. An apron and a whisk is the perfect representation of a pastry chef. Wearing a pair of overalls and holding a hammer can signify a construction worker.
Swap and share costumes
Another way to get more mileage out of costumes is to swap them with other people. This way another family can benefit, and the costume will not end up in the garbage after a single use. Consider turning the idea into a fundraiser for a school or sports organization. People can donate their costumes to the cause, and then others can shop the selection and pay a $5 donation for a costume. The school or organization keeps the proceeds, and kids get gently used costumes.
Recycle where applicable
Petroleum-based Halloween costumes that go into landfills will sit there a long time. Choosing costumes made from natural materials can help prevent this problem. Clothing and textiles are notoriously hard to recycle, but some items on costumes may be recycled into new things. Theater groups perhaps can use pieces of old costumes to create wardrobes for their productions. Or children can use items for pretend play. Crafters with a creative eye may take apart pieces of costumes and turn them into artwork or home decor.
Sell older costumes
Try selling a costume through an online site like Craigslist. Many people are happy to get a discount on costumes that are in good shape. Otherwise, work with a thrift shop or consignment store. Costumes may bring in foot traffic for these retailers, and they’ll be happy to take costumes in good condition prior to the Halloween season. Accessories like tiaras, swords, hats, and cloaks also can be sold or swapped. Halloween costumes are easy to enjoy, and those who want to think a little greener can find new ways to get more use out of costumes.

According to Smithsonian.com, the Halloween tradition of trick-or-treating traces its origins to the Celtic tradition of dressing up as evil spirits at the end of the year. But unlike the trick-or-treaters of today, the Celts did not dress up for fun or in search of candy. According to Celtic belief, the dead and the living would overlap during the transition from one year to the next. Celts also believed that demons would roam the earth during this transition period. So Celts dressed up as evil spirts so the demons they believed were walking the earth would mistake them as one of their own. But it was not just the Celts who contributed to what Halloween has become today. Historians believe that trick-or-treating may also be rooted in the medieval practice of “souling,” in which poor children would go from door-to-door on All Souls’ Day and ask for food in exchange for prayers for the dead. Both Celtic traditions and the practice of souling no doubt contributed to modern Halloween traditions, but the Halloween traditions celebrants know today have been practiced for less than 100 years.

We also offer complete maintenance of your system including cleaning and stocking of new fish and supplies. Rest assured, we’ll be there when needed. Owner Bill Wymard set up his first aquarium at the age of 10. He had no idea that several decades later he would be keeping more than 500 aquariums. He had no idea he would still have the same passion and enthusiasm for fish that he did when he was so young. With a degree in marine biology and an excitement about all things fish, it just seemed natural that the two would blend to make his lifelong dream come true. He wanted to build the biggest and best aquarium store in the country. With the help of his wife Sandy, many talented, supportive friends and family members, Aquarium Adventure in June 1997 opened its doors to rave reviews in Columbus.
www.aquariumadventurecolumbus.com Sandy Wymard’s experience in retail management, design and merchandising allow this husband and wife team to do what they both enjoy. They are quick to give the credit of their success to the many people who have helped them along the way, especially their knowledgeable, talented, sincere and long-term associates at the store. They will tell you that they learn something new every day at Aquarium Adventure, and the openness to learning new things energizes them. We pride ourselves in having the widest selection of healthy fish, corals and plants. Our staff biologists check the
health of all our aquatic life. This ensures that our fish, no matter where they’re from, are as beautiful and healthy as they would be in the wild. Aquarium Adventure believes that all underwater worlds hold great fascination, splendor and knowledge. Their hope is that you will too. “Because we must responsibly coexist with our world, we are committed to understanding and enriching the knowledge of our aquatic eco-systems through education and guidance to ensure the preservation of our hobby and our environment.” Bill Wymard Marine Biologist Aquarium Adventure

7 uses for fallen leaves By the time autumn hits full swing, many trees will have shed their leaves for the season, and the last vestiges of red, yellow and orange magic will have faded to brown. Raking, blowing and collecting leaves becomes the primary chores of lawn and yard maintenance, and presents most homeowners with large piles of gathered leaves to tend to. It is impossible to count just how many leaves fall to the ground each year, or just how many pounds of leaves get collected curbside, but the numbers are substantial. Cleaning up leaves is considerable work, but not all of those leaves need to be carted away. In fact, there are several different uses of leaves that can be beneficial. 1. Spread leaves as a protective mulch to cover tender perennials or root crops/bulbs in the ground. The leaves will form a natural insulating cover that keeps the soil and the plants within a bit warmer over winter. 2. Create a pile of leaves that will break down and form a crumbly, compost-like material called leaf mold. Even though leaf mold may sound like a blight, it’s actually a good amendment to garden soil, improving its structure and ability to hold water. Leaf mold also attracts beneficial organisms that are vital in healthy soil. 3. Brown leaves can be added to green materials in compost piles to improve the health of the compost being formed. According to the healthy living resource Care2, the ideal ratio is 75 percent brown to 25 percent green materials in compost. Turn compost piles regularly to aerate them. 4. Store dried, mulched leaves in a dry spot so they can be used in the spring as a weed barrier for spring plantings. They will keep weeds at bay and help retain soil moisture to ensure small sprouts have the resources to grow. 5. Use shredded leaves as a lawn

Macy’s Gift Card supplement. Pass a lawn mower over leaves left on the lawn to break them down into pieces too small to rake. This will help keep the lawn healthy throughout the winter without blocking out needed sunlight. 6. Bag dried leaves and pack them tightly together in cold areas of the home, such as basements or garages. They can act as added insulation. Bags of leaves also can be placed around planting containers to protect them from frost. 7. Gather a few of the best-looking leaves and preserve them. Use an iron on a low setting and press leaves between two pieces of waxed paper until the waxed paper seals together. Or use clear contact paper to achieve the same effect. Fallen leaves can be used in many different ways throughout the year.

Natural ways to fight fall allergies As the days become shorter and the weather cools down, a new crop of allergy symptoms can arise, turning the autumn season into one marked by sneezing, scratchy throats and itchy eyes. Medications can alleviate such symptoms, but allergy sufferers may want to investigate some natural ways to beat allergies. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, ragweed is one of the more common triggers of autumnal allergies. Ragweed contributes to “hay fever,” which is a term to describe allergic rhinitis that occurs as a symptom of ragweed pollen in the air. Ragweed releases pollen in mid-August, and it can continue to be problematic until a deep freeze arrives. Other sources of fall allergies include leaf mold and pollen that is present on fallen leaves. This gets circulated when people begin to rake or blow fallen leaves. Classroom pets and chalk dust in schools (although chalkboards are largely a thing of the past) are other autumn allergens. The good news is that many natural remedies work just as effectively as overthe-counter medications in regard to combatting ragweed and pollen problems. Here’s how to beat the fall allergy blues. • Stay away from pollen. Stay away from pollen and prevent it from being tracked indoors. Remove shoes when walking through the door. Take off clothes worn outside and launder them promptly, showering to wash pollen off of the body. Use an air conditioner or keep windows closed when the pollen count is high. • Increase omega-3 fatty acids. It is well documented that fatty acids are good for brain health and cardiovascular wellbeing. But these acids also may help with
allergies. A German study linked foods high in omega-3 fatty acids with the ability to fight inflammation, which is a hallmark of allergy suffering. Foods that are high in fatty acids include walnuts, flax, eggs, and cold-water fatty fish. • Rinse off pollen. Use a mild cleanser to rinse the eyelids and eyelashes of pollen, as this is where it tends to congregate after being outdoors. Use saline spray to clear nasal passages of excess pollen as well. • Take natural supplements. A study published in the journal Clinical and Experimental Allergy found participants who used tablets of the herb butterbar showed significant allergy relief after only one week. Select herbs from reputable manufacturers who certify them. • Use eucalyptus oil. This oil is great to have in the house to help clear up sinuses and provide nasal congestion relief. Mix a small amount with coconut oil and rub onto the chest. There also is some evidence that adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to cleansing products can help kill dust mites around the house. • Wear a mask. When doing housework or yard work, wear a mask to reduce the inhalation of specific allergens.
Don’t miss a worD this season. On the field. In the locker room. On the recruiting trail. If it’s happening in Scarlet & Gray, it’s happening here.

Gourds, squashes and pumpkins, oh my! Halloween takes place during a time of year characterized by earthen-colored chrysanthemums, leaf-lined walkways and crisp autumn air. As colorful as the costumes children wear for trickor-treating may be, nature’s beauty is unsurpassed this time of year, and the scores of pumpkins, gourds and squashes on display only add to that colorful melange. The Cucurbitaceae family may be best known for pumpkins, squash and gourds, but there actually are 800 species that belong to this family. While they share many of the same properties, these fruits each have their own unique attributes. The main differences between squashes, gourds and pumpkins is their intended purposes Ñ whether theyÕre ornamental or edible.

Squashes come in summer and winter varieties. Winter ones do not actually grow in the winter; in fact, they’re harvested in late summer and early fall, but the name references the hard shell casing that protects the tender pulp inside. Zucchini are summer squash because their outer flesh is tender, while butternut, acorn, spaghetti, and hubbard squashes are

was serene, however, during a lavish evening welcome ceremony at Blenheim Palace. Hundreds of demonstrators chanted outside the U.S. ambassador’s residence where Trump was staying
on the outskirts of London, providing a preview of the forceful protests expected during his two-day British stay.

Gourds
Gourds are essentially ornamental squashes; they aren’t cultivated for eating. Instead they are bred to look beautiful and unique in autumn centerpieces. Types of gourds include autumn wing gourd, warted gourds, turban gourds, and bottle gourds. Each gourd is unique in its shape and color.
Pumpkins
Pumpkins come in ornamental and edible varieties. Even though all pumpkins can be consumed, some taste better than others. Small pumpkins tend to be decorative because, according to Nutritious Life, they do not have enough meat inside to make them worthy of cooking. However, sugar pumpkins are best for baking and cooking favorite recipes, states the resource Pumpkin Nook. The festive hues and flavors of squashes, gourds and pumpkins are one more thing that makes Halloween and autumn special.

Literature and Hollywood have done much to villainize bats, which many people perceive to be dangerous, blood-sucking creatures that prey on unsuspecting victims. However, bats are far less menacing than that. While there are bats that feed on blood (vampire bats), they tend to stick to cows, pigs, horses, and birds for their meals. It is uncommon for vampire bats to bite humans for food. Vampire bats make a small cut with their teeth and then lap up the blood with their tongues, rather than “suck” the blood like they do in movies. These bats are native to Central and South America. Most other bats feed on fruit, fish or insects, particularly those that reside in North America. A single bat can eat up to 1,200 mosquito-sized insects every hour, and a bat will usually eat around 8,000 insects a night. In fact, it is beneficial to have bats around since they might serve as all-natural pesticides. Bats are nocturnal mammals that “see” in the dark using echolocation. Their eyesight is actually quite poor, but these echos serve as a form of sonar so that bats can find prey and steer clear of obstacles in their path. There are more than 1,000 different bat species. Some are solitary animals, while others thrive with hundreds of others in caves. Bats are nothing to fear – even around Halloween – and actually can be fascinating to study.
