Beauty Options for Every Comfort Level

For women, the phrase “beauty is pain” often rings true. Cosmetic procedures can be painful, from the procedure itself to the recovery. But fear not; Columbus beautymakers have a spectrum of options to fulfill your needs and wants, while keeping you comfortable throughout—regardless of your pain tolerance.

A Day at the Spa There is a distinct difference between a salon or day spa that offers basic facials, massages and waxing versus a medispa, which offers medical-grade services under the supervision of a physician.

“If you get a facial [at the salon], it’s about massaging and cleaning your pores,” says Dr. Roxanne Grawe, a plastic surgeon at Roxy Plastic Surgery in Columbus. “But medical-grade facials [at medispas]—that’s taking a knife and scraping off the top layer of your face.”

How customers decide what they want depends on four things, says Melody Kuck, senior esthetician and skin professional coordinator for the Charles Penzone Grand Salon in Dublin: their level of comfort with the procedure, the amount of time they want to invest in the procedure and recovery, how much money they want to spend and how regimented they are in caring for their skin.

The simplest, least invasive way to get great skin, she adds, is to start early and wear sunscreen. This step in your skincare routine focuses on preventative work now, so you don’t have to do repair work later.

But for some women, repair mode is their only option. At Charles Penzone salons, that starts with a facial, which falls under one of three packages based on length of the service.

“Within those packages are a variety of treatments, depending on what the guest wants,” says Kuck. One such treatment—a chemical peel—is a common add-on. But don’t be intimidated by the aggressivesounding name.

“It’s a more aggressive exfoliation using chemicals or acids,” says Kuck, adding that Ohio laws are pretty strict when it comes to what can be done without the supervision of a physician. “Our chemical peels must be under 30 percent acid solution in Ohio.” That means you’ll get noticeable results in skin clarity with “virtually no sensation during the peel and no downtime after,” she explains.

But cleaner pores and fresher skin aren’t the only thing guests want, says Kuck—there’s also a big demand for waxing.

As women age, they tend to grow hair on their chins, faces and even their foreheads.

Doctor Supervision Required Unlike day spas, services in an Ohio medispa must be performed under the supervision of a licensed physician. You’ll see an increase in cost and procedure time compared to a standard day spa, though recovery time remains minimal.

“In Ohio, the regulations on what can be done in an office by a physician, or by someone other than a physician, are relatively strict compared to other areas of the country,” says Dr. Jason Lichten of Central Ohio Plastic Surgery.

Medispa services vary from practice to practice, but for most it means the treatments— from chemical peels to Botox injections—are performed with medical-grade products.

“We often do microneedling, vampire facials; laser hair removal is always popular,” says Grawe of Roxy Plastic Surgery.

Microneedling refers to a process by which a small pen creates microscopic injuries to the top layers of your skin, which stimulates it to produce collagen; many patients describe the sensation as a deep vibration.

You can also topically add your own blood—well, platelets, to be exact—during a vampire facial, which Grawe says are incredibly popular.

“We can wax the entire face or anywhere on your body—if you want it waxed, we’ll wax it,” Kuck says.

For the woman looking to amp up her beauty routine without worrying about invasive procedures or recovery times, day spas offer ideal solutions.

Never Do Your Makeup Again “It’s amazing how permanent makeup services have exploded,” says Melody Kuck, senior esthetician and skin professional coordinator at the Charles Penzone Grand Salon in Dublin. “It’s become very popular.”

And for good reason; permanent makeup—eyeliner, lip liner, brow shaping, brow or lash tinting or microblading, which makes small cuts in the eyebrow and then fills those small cuts with color—is both a time- and age-saver.

“For older women, a lot of the permanent brow makeup has to do with the fact that it used to be really popular to have tiny eyebrows,” says Kuck. “But if you plucked your eyebrows for 20 years, you killed those follicles.” Permanent makeup techniques like microblading can restore the full brow look that’s popular lately.

Brow and lash tinting, which are safe for the eyes, can match any hair color to further reduce the appearance of aging. “It lasts about three weeks,” says Kuck. “And it only tints the lashes, not the skin.”

For those who still aren’t sure about injectable lip fillers, creating a fuller lip with permanent liner is popular and somewhat less invasive.

While permanent makeup like lip liner, eyeliner and microblading all are technically tattoos, Kuck says they do differ from traditional ink. “You’re going further into the epidermis than you would with a normal tattoo,” she explains. Recovery time for permanent makeup procedures is minimal, with most recipients returning to work that day.

“It’s frequently requested,” she says of the facial that works in conjunction with the microneedling, where your platelet-rich plasma is applied topically during the procedure.

“It’s considered a very natural alternative to fillers or other injectables.”

Grawe’s clients also frequently request dermaplaning, which exfoliates by scraping off the top layer of your skin. Clients can add different products to many procedures for varying results, including a Retinol mask to decrease hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles; a glycolic booster with the Luminate

face mask for a brighter and more even complexion; or a vitamin C booster, which can also illuminate the skin.

Upping the Ante Once you move past day spas and medispas, you start to see more expensive, timeconsuming procedures that require more recovery … but also produce better results.

“From the very beginning, first and foremost, we spend a lot of time with the patient making sure we’re doing exactly what we need to do to address their concerns and meet their goals, while also taking into account their anatomy and medical conditions,” says Dr. John Wakelin of Columbus Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery, who adds that not everyone is a good candidate for extensive procedures or surgery.

But if you do meet the criteria for nonsurgical procedures, you can meet a wide range of goals with minimal invasiveness.

“You can do a lot now with injectables,” says Grawe from Roxy Plastic Surgery.

Perhaps the most well-known injectable is the ubiquitous wrinkle-reducer Botox.

“People come in asking for it by name,” says Lichten of Central Ohio Plastic Surgery.

“Botox is great for around the eyes, brow and forehead—the upper one-third of the face.

Botox gives predictable results that last four to six months, and it’s affordable.”

Other popular injectables, which have instant results and minimal downtime, include Juvederm and Restylane, which are used to smooth out wrinkles around the mouth and nose and give you fuller lips. Voluma injections can restore the fullness in your cheeks,

which lose their fat and youthful appearance as women age.

“We call it a liquid facelift,” says Grawe of these procedures. “Injectables can bruise, but they don’t leave scars. And they last quite a while—Voluma lasts almost two and a half years.”

Grawe adds that while traditional liposuction, which is an invasive surgical procedure, used to be your only option for dramatic fat reduction, patients now can opt for an injectable instead.

“Right now, we can melt fat in the chin with an injection of Kybella,” she says, explaining that Kybella is made from what the body naturally uses for fat breakdown.

The injectable aids in getting rid of stubborn fat around the chin and jowl area, including double chins, in a more natural way.

Kybella currently is only approved for use around the chin, but most plastic surgeons agree the next step will be using it on the thighs, once it becomes cost-effective.

“Right now, it’s approximately $2,400 for treating the neck area,” says Lichten.

“Another popular, more natural method for fullness in the face is using a patient’s own fat and injecting it back into the cheeks.”

Also less invasive and slightly more natural is CoolSculpting, which is an anesthesia-free liposuction procedure that targets and freezes fat cells before removing them permanently, giving your thigh and buttock region a more shaped look with minimal downtime.

“Most patients are back to work that same day and see results within weeks of the first treatment,” says Lichten.

When Surgery is the Only Fix Sometimes, the only way to get a specific result is to go under the knife. Surgical procedures carry a greater risk due to the use of anesthesia and potential for complications like post-op blood clots. Recovery time can be weeks, depending on the procedure, and the cost is well into the thousands of dollars.

But the greater risk also yields a greater result. And according to Columbus plastic surgeons, the procedure bringing the most women into the operating room is, by far, the “Mommy Makeover.”

“It’s a catchall term for combining more than one surgical operation in a woman who is a mother,” says Wakelin. He says that many mothers want to reverse the effects childbearing had on their breasts, stomach and other areas. “They find that sometimes the stubborn fat pockets become more and more difficult to eradicate,” he adds.

or augmentation. It also can include vaginal rejuvenation, which resurfaces and tightens the vaginal canal post-baby.

Other surgical procedures include a full-body lift—a tightening procedure typically requested by those who have lost significant amounts of weight—arm lifts, thigh lifts and labioplasty.

“If your labia are bigger than normal or they are asymmetrical, and you don’t like the way it looks, you can get a labioplasty,” says Grawe. The procedure is done in-office because it’s quick and the area is easy to numb. “We can make everything look smaller, tighter and prettier.”

But the most-requested individual surgeries are a little more noticeable post-op.

“Breast augmentation, in general, continues to be the most-requested surgical procedure,” says Wakelin. “A major misconception is that everyone is getting very large breasts, but most patients are asking to look natural—they just want something to fill out the breasts.”

“Also popular is butt augmentation,” says Lichten of Central Ohio Plastic Surgery. “The idea is to lift, shape and increase the roundness. When patients talk about a butt lift, it’s about restoring the shape.”

Ultimately, patients who request cosmetic procedures—from basic pampering facials to surgical makeovers—have one essential goal in mind.

“People want these procedures for themselves,” says Grawe. “It gives [them] a chance to be a younger, more vibrant version of themselves … in a way they’re comfortable with.”
