2016: The year of living differently The influences that shape what you drive are no longer coming from you; they’re coming from government and competitive will

By Wheelbase Media They’re on their way to showrooms everywhere — a variety of new 2016 vehicles, all shined up and raring to go. In fact, the selection has likely never been wider. From high-roller dreamboat models, to more humble fare, the new crop offers something for different needs, desires and budgets.

Among the all-new or mostly new automobiles, the increasingly popular tall-wagon class (the crossover) grows increasingly dominant. This trend has yet to reach its peak, especially with the world’s exotic-car makers.

Less conspicuously, shoppers with mainstream tastes and budgets are also passing over cars with trunks and embracing the practicality of models that can accommodate people plus much more of their stuff.

But don’t write off the family sedan just yet. Competition among this group is so fierce that facelifts and adjustments, both minor and major, are becoming an almost annual occurrence. Here, automakers are fighting hard just to keep up with each other, let alone one-up each other.

At the other end of the design spectrum, there are several new or significantly altered 2016 convertibles in the mix — the Chevrolet Camaro, Mazda MX5 Miata, Audi TT and the newbie Buick Cascada.

Let's talk about size for a moment.

Automakers are continually finding ways to make cars larger and roomier while at the same time lighter, which helps performance and fuel economy.

“Everyone is trying to cut fuel,” said Ed Gabel, new vehicle manager for Haydocy Buick GMC in Columbus.

The redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Malibu is a prime example. New materials, better engineering, killer competition and tightening fuel-economy regs are behind the push. Even the smallest car you can buy, the Smart Fortwo, is all about the room, as it grows in width and showcases yet another trend: smaller engines that are turbocharged.

The idea is more power from a smaller and lighter engine package (which is also good for fuel economy) and more gears for the transmission.

Those seeking pure performance have definitely not been forgotten, although the 2015 launch of Dodge’s 707-horsepower Charger and Challenger Hellcat troublemakers is difficult to match.

Chevrolet is giving a good shot with the 650-horsepower Corvette Z06, and Ford has an all-new Mustangbased Shelby GT350. This 526-horsepower stallion promises to be the track car to beat among its competitors, including the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS and the aforementioned Challenger Hellcat.

Even in the smaller ranks, power is generally on the rise. The trend is defi-

nitely toward smaller and lighter, but without conceding performance.

From the eco-warrior camp, considerable excitement centers on the second-generation Volt that will roll out over the next several months. It promises to have an improved range and more oomph, but with fuel prices lagging, will anyone really notice?

That’s no doubt a concern at Toyota, which has a new 2016 Prius hybrid that’s ready to roll.

Lastly, since most automakers have figured out how to make reliable cars that are mandated to have minimum safety standards, such as stability control, the battleground has turned to technology.

Better infotainment systems that integrate with your smartphone and features like heads-up displays — where the speedometer is projected on the windshield — are helping drivers keep their eyes on the road, said Jimmy Snyder, general manager for Dan Tobin Chevrolet Buick GMC. Some technology even works with voice-activation now, he said.

But wider availability of crashavoidance technology is probably the most significant development for 2016. Preventing crashes is more important than passive safety such as airbags and rollover protection. Cars that reduce driver error should be welcomed with open wallets.

Hot news for 2016: The replacement for the TL and TSX sedan was introduced for the 2015 model year with crisp styling and an appealing price.

Overview: The TLX is Acura's latest entryluxury sports sedan that competes in a segment it practically invented back in the late 1990s. But with changing times and increased competition, Honda's premium division sought to have one vehicle to replace the TL and TSX sedans that departed after the 2014 model year and came up with the TLX. Physically, the TLX is shorter than the TL by 3.7 inches, primarily due to a reduction in front and rear overhang. It's also about an inch narrower, and the roofline is slightly lower.

However, the wheelbase remains identical to that of the TL, ensuring adequate legroom for rear-seat riders. Under the hood is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 206 horsepower and 182 pound-feet of torque. It's mated to a quick-shifting eight-speed automated

manual dual-clutch transmission, called a DCT. It features an automatic transmissionstyle torque converter that helps smooth out the shifts. Optional is a 3.5-liter V-6 with 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque.

A nine-speed automatic transmission with a console-mounted push-button gear selector is exclusive to the V-6. The four-cylinder TLX is strictly a front-wheel driver, while V-6 versions are available with an upgraded version of Acura's SH-AWD. All four-cylinder and FWD V-6 models come with all-wheel steering (P-AWS) that slightly alters the rear wheels in phase with the fronts when turning at speed. During lowspeed maneuvers, the P-AWS slightly turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction. The TLX comes standard with ECON, Normal, Sport and Sport+ driving modes. The latter maximizes the car's performance abilities with crisper shifts, added steering effort and a throatier exhaust note.

Hot news for 2016: Audi's turbocharged 2.0liter four-cylinder makes 220 horsepower in the TT and 292 in the TTS. A six-speed automated manual and all-wheel drive are common to both.

Overview: Some critics might quibble that the TT really hasn't changed much over the years, and you'll get no argument from Audi on that point. Still, cloaked with new sheet metal, the TT duo has never looked sharper.

Other than a reshaped hexagonal grille and angular headlights, the exterior changes are very subtle.

Inside, the flat-bottom multifunction steering wheel is back, and the display screen has melded with the gauges into a feature called the Multi Media Interface (MMI). Located between the scalable tachometer and speedometer, the 12.3-inch-wide MMI screen can display communication, infotainment and other data such as a trip computer, fuel status and outside temperature.

Pushing the start button brings to life Audi's familiar turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that now generates 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

A six-speed paddle-shift automated manual is the sole transmission. It parcels out engine torque through Audi's permanently engaged all-wheel-drive Quattro system that also comes standard. Audi's test results give the TT a zero-to-60-mph time of 5.3 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph.

The TT is no slouch in the standard content department. All come with dual-zone climate control, keyless start, 12-way poweradjustable heated front seats, front and rear parking sensors, 18-inch performance summer tires and a nine-speaker audio system. Along with the navigation system, a quartet of packages includes more heavily bolstered sport seats, premium leather seat coverings, rearview camera and a premium Bang & Olufsenbrand sound package.

Hot news for 2016: The new X1 is one of the least financially painful ways to move up to a BMW. Overview: The small-luxury wagon brigade just welcomed a new member. The X1 replaces the not-so-old original that initially landed here for the 2013 model year.

This time, BMW has mounted the X1 logo on a chassis developed for BMW's Mini division, which means it's a front-wheel-drive model with added all-wheel-drive hardware similar to that used on the Mini Countryman.

The system turns the front wheels only in ideal conditions, but can shift up to 100 percent of the torque to the rear wheels when traction warrants.

Keeping the new X1 xDrive28i on the go is an equally new turbocharged 2.0-liter fourcylinder that makes 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of peak torque.

That compares to 240 horses and 260 pound-feet for the previous X1's base turbo

2.0. By BMW's measurements, the X1 will reach 60 mph from rest in 6.3 seconds, or about the same as before.

A front-wheel-drive X1 will be heading our way later in the 2016 model year. The previously available xDrive35i, along with its 300-horsepower six-cylinder engine, has been excised from the lineup.

All X1s come with the usual assortment of amenities plus power-adjustable front seats, keyless ignition, heated outside mirrors, rainsensing wipers, fog lights and 18-inch run-flat tires (19-inch versions are optional).

An M Sport option adds paddle shifters and a sport suspension and seats, while the Premium Package gets you a panoramic moonroof and LED headlights.

Other extra-cost equipment includes a navigation system, 12-speaker Harmon Kardon sound audio plus an array of the latest in crash-avoidance technologies that are part of a Driver Assistance Package.

Hot news for 2016: Why build the Cascada?

Because the world can always use another convertible. Buick can thank General Motors' Europe-based Opel division for this one.

Overview: If you were perhaps wondering what would replace the Chrysler 200/Sebring convertible after departing at the end of 2014, it's actually a Buick. Originally developed in Germany at General Motors' Opel facilities, the Cascada is being fed to North American audiences wearing the same name as its Opel counterpart.

That's just fine with Buick, which can always use some added eye candy to lure customers to its showrooms. In fact, the last convertible to take up residence behind the glass walls was the Buick Reatta, which ended its run in 1991. From grille to tailpipe, the Cascada is one handsome hunk of iron and is mildly reminiscent of the late Mitsubishi Eclipse convertible, only slightly longer. raised or lowered in 17 seconds and at vehicle speeds up to 31 mph. When stowed, the lid is hidden beneath a hard tonneau. At that point truck volume shrinks dramatically, but with one or both halves of the rear seat folded flat, there's a decent amount of stowage room for bulkier items.

The Cascada's platform is the same one used by Buick's Verano sedan. However, the unique-to-Cascada engine is a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder that delivers 200 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic is the sole transmission choice.

The base Cascada 1SV arrives fairly loaded including dual-zone climate control, navigation system, leather-covered eight-way heated power front seats and 20-inch wheels.

The Premium trim increases the content with a few more luxury tidbits plus lane-departure warning, forward-collision alert and front- and rear-park assist.

The drive toward autonomous cars

By Carolyn Dix Remer Dispatch Media Group Just how long will you have to wait for a selfdriving car that can get you safely to your destination while you sit back, relax and snooze for the ride?

Turns out, autonomous cars are much closer — and farther — than they appear.

On the one hand, all of the pieces are there for a self-driving car, said John O’Dell, senior analyst for Edmunds.com. You’ve probably seen news reports about the Google self-driving car hitting the streets of San Fran.

And, many of the latest model-year vehicles are heading in that direction, offering “active safety systems” that let the driver take a backseat as the car alerts the driver to any dangers, or in some cases, takes action itself to correct problems or avoid collisions.

Take adaptive cruise control. In its original form, the radar-based cruise control allowed the driver to set the car at a certain distance behind the driver in front of it.

The latest iterations now allow the driver to set distances at several different increments, and the cruise control will speed the car up or slow it down based on the car in front of it, O’Dell said.

Some newer versions will even make the car come to a full stop, he said. While the car will set off alarms, flash lights or perhaps vibrate the steering wheel to alert the driver to a potential hazard, if the driver doesn’t take control of the car, the car will stop itself — and even start back up again.

Lane-keeping assist is another new feature that lets the car take the wheel, “assisting the driver by gently correcting the steering path if it detects the

driver going out of the lane,” said Ed Gabel, newvehicle manager for Haydocy Buick GMC. Hot news for 2016: Cadillac pushes the envelope with a model geared to compete with some of the grandest sedans around the globe.

Overview: A 400-horsepower twinturbocharged V-6 tops the list of power plants.

There's also a 265-horsepower four-cylinder and a 335-horsepower V-6.

If there are niches to fill in the luxury-car category, Cadillac appears determined to build product. The CT6 becomes the fourth sedan brand in its lineup.

The CT6 uses a combination of luxury appointments, prodigious power, knife-edgy design and, last but not least, lithe and lightweight construction.

To this point, Cadillac claims that the CT6 tips the scales below the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-series sedans and weighs about the same as the smaller Cadillac CTS (the CT6 has close to 8 more inches between the front and rear wheels). Assisting

in the pound-paring quest is a 100-percent aluminum body and front suspension.

Preventing the CT6 from becoming corpulent ensures that the three available power teams will provide the driver with plenty of kick. They include a 265-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, a 335-horsepower non-turbo 3.6-liter V-6 and a 400-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6. All are connected to eight-speed transmissions.

All-wheel drive is available, but only with the 3.6- and 3.0-liter V-6s. All-wheel steering can be had as well.

The CT6 is brimming with content and also provides a significant number of extracost luxury and safety amenities. Among the most unique are Quadzone climate control, surround-view security camera that can record a 360-degree view of the car, a rear camera mirror that replaces the traditional mirror and a Bose Panaray sound system with 34 strategically positioned speakers.

Hot news for 2016: Chevrolet's answer to the new-for-2015 Mustang is more power in a smaller and slightly lighter package.

Overview: Base models are motivated by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Both the V-6 and V-8 return in beefed-up form.

With the 2015 redesigned Ford Mustang and significantly updated Dodge Challenger models, what more could fans of old-schoolstyle American muscle wish for? That would be an all-new sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro to keep pace with the competition.

The 2016 edition sticks with the same look as the previous car. But inside, a completely modernized interior does away with the tunnelstyle gauge pods that were not all that popular when they were installed in the original car nearly a half-century ago.

The new dash is more user-friendly, with an 8-inch screen displaying vital info between the tach and speedometer, and another optional screen of the same size on the control

panel for the navigation, communications and audio systems.

The new car has a stiffer chassis and is slightly shorter and narrower than the 2015 model. The weight was also cut by 390 pounds. That amount relates to the base LT model equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The Camaro becomes heavier with the installation of either the 3.6-liter V-6 (335 horsepower/284 poundfeet) or the Corvette-based 6.2-liter V-8 (455 horsepower/455 pound-feet), exclusive to the SS trim. Each is available with six-speed manual transmissions or available eight-speed automatics.

There is no word yet whether or when the higher performing ZL1 or Z/28 models will show up, but given the racy Mustang GT350's 2016 return with 526 horsepower, it shouldn't be too long. The convertible version will join the coupe part way into the 2016 model year.

Hot news for 2016: Chrysler's full-size 300 sedan is back with minor updates inside and out; C and S models available with both base V-6 and Hemi V-8.

Overview: Sad to say, but if you want a fullsize sports sedan from Chrysler, you will have to go next door to the Dodge dealership for a 700-plus horsepower Hellcat or a car with the 470-horse 6.4-liter V-8. There are no SRT versions of the Chrysler 300.

To make life easier in its absence, the performance-flavored S model, when paired with the existing Hemi V-8, has sportier suspension tuning and new wheels with summer performance tires available.

All other power trains carry over, meaning the 292-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 that is bumped to a flat 300 in the stylish S. And for extra thrust, the optional 370-horsepower 5.7liter V-8 returns to save gas by running on only four of its eight cylinders under light load con-

ditions. Models using the V-6 or 5.7 V-8 can be ordered with available all-wheel drive that uncouples the front axle when it's not needed, reducing drag on the engine.

The lineup for 2016 is comprised of the base 300 Limited and 300 S, as well as the 300 C. Other than the base Limited model, every trim level can be had with either the V-6 or optionally the 5.7 V-8.

Also, since 2016 is Chrysler's 90th anniversary, a special option package adds larger 8.4-inch Uconnect screen with navigation, a dual-pane sunroof and badges spread through the cabin.

Also new this year is a SafetyTec Plus package with full-speed forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control with full-stop function, lane-departure warning with lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross path detection and more.

Hot news for 2016: Dodge's Pony Car is out to steal some Mustang and Camaro thunder.

Overview: Three cheers for Big Three automakers who have proudly flaunted the good old days of tire-smoking performance. The Dodge Challenger is a prime example, helped after a significant update for 2015.

The company relies on heritage for inspiration. Externally, the hood and nose were changed, while more prominent rear quarter panels, a split-taillight design and integrated exhaust outlets are evident at the back.

The interior has retro-influenced seat coverings plus a heated and ventilated leathercovered-sport-seat option. The dashboard, gauges, steering wheel and 8.4-inch touchscreen/back-up camera were also new, as was the high sill floor console reminiscent of those found on Challengers of old.

Although the base 305-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 and 375-horsepower 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 (standard with R/T trims) returned

unaltered, the output of the 6.4-liter V-8 was increased to 485 horses for 2015. This engine, a Challenger SRT mainstay, is also fundamental to the R/T Scatback and 392 Hemi Scatback Shaker models (referring to the engine-mounted hood scoop). The top-of-theheap engine, which is exclusive to the limitedproduction Challenger SRT Hellcat — and its Charger sedan cousin — is a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 rated at 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque.

An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard in V-6 Challengers, and optional on all V-8s, which come standard with the sixspeed manual.

Challenger pricing begins at $28,000 for the base model, including destination charges.

For 2016, the $61,000 Hellcat base price has risen to $65,200. Dodge said that part of that is covered by both navigation and leather seats being standard. Expect a shorter wait for your Hellcat, too.

Hot news for 2016: After being retooled in 2015 to be stronger, faster and lighter thanks to an aluminum body, the F-150 now makes it easier than ever to park like a pro.

Overview: The V-6 and V-8 engines are joined by two turbocharged EcoBoost V-6s, and all receive six-speed automatic transmissions.

There were plenty of naysayers claiming that the best-selling pickup might have lost its crown to General Motors and Ram. But a year into its new life, and the adoption of aluminum body panels for the F-150 remains one heck of a game changer — in more ways than one.

The switch from steel to more dent- and ding- and rust-averse aluminum body panels saved as much as 700 pounds, depending on whether you are talking about regular, extended SuperCab or four-door SuperCrew versions. All are perched on a new ladder-type frame that is stronger and lighter by a few pounds.

For 2016, a new optional Pro Trailer Backup system combines a revised rearview camera with more helpful lines on the display and a stand-alone knob that drivers can twist to guide the truck where it needs to go.

The system is similar to self-parking technology, which means you do not have to use the steering wheel.

Under the hood, base trucks come with a 3.5-liter V-6 with 283 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, while a twin-turbo 2.7liter V-6 rated at 325 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque is optional.

Inside, the cabin was completely transformed and in up-level models approaches luxury-car standards, particularly the Lariat and King Ranch trims.

The FX4 off-road option package (firmer suspension, skid plates and a locking rear axle) can be added to most 4x4 models.

Hot news for 2016: The small and popular Terrain finally gets a facelift, and Denali model adds more appeal… and chrome.

Overview: A thrifty 2.4-liter four-cylinder drives the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission, which does double duty to deliver power from the 3.6-liter V-6. Allwheel drive is available with either engine.

The Terrain gets new fascias front and rear with a chrome strip running straight across, along with a new hood and chrome grille.

Illumination for up-level models includes LED running lights, and there are new 18- and 19-inch wheel designs across the board.

The ultra-luxurious Denali subbrand is still available on this, GMC's smallest vehicle.

More chrome on the broad grille and exhaust pipes, satin touches, unique lights and bodycolored fascias and rocker moldings highlight the exterior, while softer leather for the seats, doors and steering wheel, along with smoked mahogany inserts, differentiate the cabin from

lesser trims. Unusual for a Denali, however, the Terrain version can be had with either the base 182-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder or the 301-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6.

You are not forced to get the V-6. All Terrains get six-speed automatic transmissions and both engines can be had with front- or optional all-wheel drive. Towing capacity for the four-cylinder is 1,500 pounds, while the V-6 is rated for 3,500.

Base SL models come with the usual air/ tilt/power accessories along with a few unusual standard features such as a rear-vision camera and 12 months of OnStar, the remote help and courtesy concierge service.

Every Terrain model gets a new audio system that uses a 7-inch touch screen. There is an available safety package with forwardcollision alert, lane-departure warning and rear-parking assist. And there is a standard OnStar-based 4G LTE built-in Wi-Fi hotspot for all aboard to stay connected … all the time.

Hot news for 2016: Among other small hatchback wagons, the HR-V is generously midsized.

Overview: Think of the HR-V as the middle child of Honda's small wagon lineup. In length it is exactly halfway between the larger Honda CR-V and the smaller Fit. The sloping roofline is more hatchback than wagon, but in terms of cargo volume, the HR-V beats the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage and is significantly ahead on volume compared to the Chevrolet Trax and Jeep Renegade.

The HR-V shares the same chassis as the Fit and is built at the same plant in Mexico.

Among other things, it means that the fuel tank is located in the center of the vehicle beneath the front seats, allowing for a flat floor and ample legroom for rear-seat passengers. As with the Fit, the back-seat cushion folds up, which comes in handy when transporting tall objects.

The 1.8-liter four-cylinder produces 141 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque. It connects to a six-speed manual transmission or optional continuously variable unit (CVT) with optional paddle shifters that control seven preset ratios. The optional all-wheel drive stands ready to shift torque to the rear wheels if the fronts begin to slip. Note that models with AWD must have the CVT. The base LX trim arrives with an impressive level of content including climate control, heated front seats, 7-inch touch-screen display that controls the audio and communications systems, rearview camera, electric parking brake, 160-watt audio system and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The EX adds dual-zone climate control, a power moonroof, push-button start, 180watt stereo, fog lights and a camera-based LaneWatch system that displays side views of approaching traffic whenever the turn signals are activated.

Hot news for 2016: The Tucson is poised to go from contender to leader in the compact tall-wagon class.

Overview: With each successive effort, the Tucson closes the gap with its pack peers to a point where it would be foolish not to include it on your long list.

The design mimics that of the larger Santa Fe, especially when it comes to the trapezoidal grille. The Hyundai gains 3 inches in overall length, while the front and rear wheels are set 1 inch farther apart.

Interior volume with the split-folding rear seat in place also increases by an impressive 20 percent, but falls short of the league-leading Honda CR-V. The rear seat now reclines 37 degrees, and the dashboard/control panel is now cleaner and more businesslike.

The base SE gets a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 164 horsepower and 151 poundfeet of torque. Eco, Sport and Limited versions feature a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder

that delivers 175 horsepower and 195 poundfeet of torque.

A six-speed automatic transmission connects to the 2.0, while a segment-exclusive seven-speed automated manual transmission is hooked to the turbo 1.6. All-wheel drive is optional with either engine.

All Tucsons come with the usual poweroperated features plus air conditioning. Along with the turbo engine, the Eco adds exterior roof rails plus an eight-way power driver's seat with lumbar support.

Sport buyers get heated front seats, pushbutton start, the latest collision-mitigating/ avoidance tech and 19-inch wheels.

2016: A model year for fuel efficiency

By Carolyn Dix Remer Dispatch Media Group Gasoline prices have been going down, but there’s another way to spend less at the pump next year — buying a new car.

The 2016 model-year cars are more fuel efficient than ever, and we have history to thank for it.

In 1975, in the wake of the Arab Oil Embargo and skyrocketing gas prices that squeezed the U.S. economy, Congress passed the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards in an attempt to improve fuel efficiency.

CAFE standards are an average mile-per-gallon increase that all automakers’ fleets of cars and light trucks must meet within a set period of time, making their vehicles more fuel efficient overall.

And while the initial goal of the CAFE standards was geared toward reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil, recently the Environmental Protection Agency has gotten involved, creating standards more weighted toward reducing carbon emissions, said John O’Dell, senior analyst for Edmunds.com.

In fact, “the Obama administration has been the most aggressive administration with its set of increases” in fuel efficiency, O’Dell said.

One set of CAFE standards mandated by the Obama administration ended with the 2016 model year, for which auto manufacturers were required to have an average of 34.1 mpg for their new vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

By 2025, the CAFE standard increases to 54 mpg for new cars, O’Dell said.

So, just how have car manufacturers created cars with increased fuel efficiency to meet the demanding CAFE standards?

Hot news for 2016: Jeep's take on small off-roading is an Italian-American 4x4 that gets some minor polishing for its second season.

Overview: Despite being sold alongside the Compass and Patriot, the Renegade is the smallest of Jeep's miniscule off-roaders, and by a long shot. It was designed here, but it is built at a Fiat plant in Italy and sold in more than 100 countries.

The front and rear body overhangs are practically nonexistent, perfect for off-roading, and there is plenty of space between the tires and the fenders. The vehicle's narrow width does place a premium on elbowroom, but the dash and control panel are well laid-out, the oversized knobs are clearly marked and the meaty steering wheel closely replicates what you'll find in the larger Grand Cherokee.

Base Renegades run with a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It's connected to a six-speed manual transmis-

sion. The nonturbo 2.4-liter option puts out 184 horsepower and 177 pound-feet and is matched to a nine-speed automatic. Frontwheel drive is standard on all but the top-line 4x4 Trailhawk, while Active Drive four-wheeldrive is optional. The system's Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud modes are augmented by an exclusive Rock setting for the Trailhawk.

The base Renegade Sport includes the bare essentials, while the Latitude adds air conditioning, roof rails, fog lights, touch-screen audio, Bluetooth connectivity and now rainsensing wipers. Hot news for 2016: It looks similar to the 2015 model, but beneath a conservative-yetattractive shell is a sophisticated wagon that's as capable and comfortable as some more expensive rigs.

Overview: With numerous updates and luxury/safety amenities, the 2016 Sorento is not afraid to play with the more established segment leaders.

The latest edition shows a strong similarity to the previous version, but most noticeable is a larger honeycomb grille and lower air intake, revised headlights and fog lights and an enlarged roof spoiler and new tail lamps.

Less obvious is the distance between the front and rear wheels that has grown by more than 3 inches. Width is about the same as before.

The increase amounts to a bit more cargo space, whether the second- and optional thirdrow seats are folded (almost) flat or are left in their upright positions. Second-row legroom

has also increased, as has access to the optional third row.

The dashboard now appears less cluttered, with easier-to-use/find knobs and dials and bigger fresh-air vents. The Sorento uses a modified platform that is more rigid by 14 percent and is built using more laser welds in key spots.

For 2016, the base power train is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that makes 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. That is a bit less than the previous 2.4 191/181 numbers, but the new engine gets better fuel economy.

A newly available turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder increases performance to 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, while returning unchanged is a 3.3-liter V-6 that delivers 290 horsepower and 252 poundfeet.

The V-6 is mandatory if you want to outfit your Sorento with the third-row seat.

Hot news for 2016: The best-selling model in the Lexus garage finally gets the all-new treatment and makes a bigger and bolder statement.

Overview: The RX has been a trendsetter since it first arrived for the 1999 model year.

In terms of style, the latest fourth-generation version is no different. With an angular grille, creased door panels and floating rear roof pillars, the RX does not beg for your attention, it practically demands it.

Hot news for 2016: Perfect for people who pine for a Porsche or crave a Corvette, but lack the paycheck.

Overview: At long last, Mazda has introduced the fourth generation of its all-time bestselling roadster. The 2016 is sleeker from grille to trunk lid. The fenders bulge aggressively out from the body, the grinning air intake has been toned down, and the truncated rear deck evokes thoughts of a BMW Z4 two-seater.

Mazda's stylists cut the overall length down by more than 3 inches and reduced the distance between the front and rear wheels by close to an inch. A full-court press aimed at weight reduction has also yielded a notinsignificant 150-pound decrease, with the help of aluminum body panels and lightened components.

The revamped cockpit includes a trio of clearly marked gauges, oversize control knobs for the ventilation system and an available 7-inch touch screen with voice command for

audio and communications units. The slick, nonpower soft-top takes only one hand to unlatch or secure it in place.

The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is identical in displacement to the previous 2.0, but its peak horsepower is less, but 148 pound-feet of torque beats the older engine's 140 rating.

The engine can be matched with a six-speed manual transmission or available six-speed automatic.

The base MX-5 Sport arrives with air conditioning, a six-speaker stereo, push-button start and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Club adds a sport-tuned suspension with Bilstein-brand shocks, limited-slip differential, front suspension brace, front and rear spoilers, Bose audio system with headrest speakers and 17-inch wheels.

Grand Touring upgrades encompass climate control, heated leather seats, navigation system and an insulated cloth-lined top.

Hot news for 2016: It's a new name for the previous ML-class tall wagon plus an all-new tall-hatchback variant.

Overview: For 2016, the GLK-Class compact wagon has become the GLC-Class, and the former M-Class has escaped from its chrysalis and turned into the GLE-Class.

In addition, the GLE is now available as a four-door hatchback that M-B insists is a coupe.

As with the M-Class, the GLE offers a repertoire of four-cylinder, V-6 and V-8 power plants that range from fuel-minded to take-noprisoners high-output. Every engine gets the same seven-speed automatic transmission, and all models have 4MATIC all-wheel drive except the base GLE350.

They are joined by a plug-in hybrid model that combines a 329-horsepower V-6 with an 85-kilowatt (114-horsepower) electric motor for a total system output of 436 horsepower.

The GLE550e, as it is called, can func-

tion on battery alone for up to 18 miles and cruise at speeds up to 80 mph before the V-6 joins in to help out. The other fuel sipper, the 201-horsepower four-cylinder GLE30d turbodiesel, is rated at 22 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway.

Both the hybrid and the turbodiesel are only installed in GLE wagons, as is the twinturbocharged 329-horsepower 3.0-liter V-6 gasoline engine in the GLE 400. A 362-horsepower offshoot of the 3.0 is standard in the GLE 450 AMG hatchback coupe.

There is also the AMG GLE63 S coupe that comes with a 577-horspower twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8. The wagon version is rated at 550 horsepower.

Fully loaded models display wood trim with satin nickel garnish and stitched leather seat covers. Long-distance drivers might want to pop for the available multicontour front seats that will massage your stress away.

Hot news for 2016: Nissan said that its eighth-generation Maxima sedan is every inch a four-door sports car.

Overview: The latest Maxima covers a broad spectrum, from well-equipped luxury mount, to agile sports sedan capable of snaking around curves and tackling straightaways at a reasonably rapid pace.

Visually, the car displays a level of aggressiveness that makes most other luxury sedans appear staid. The flashy chrome grille, curvaceous body panels and sweeping rear-end signal that this Nissan loves flaunting its stuff.

Underpinning the attractive body is the next-generation Altima-based architecture that is lighter as well as 25 percent more rigid. The new sheet metal adds just more than 2 inches to the length, but a slightly lowered and elongated roofline makesit appear much longer.

Inside, the controls are straightforward, the Zero Gravity front chairs are supportive and the push-button starter has migrated to the

The Platinum comes with a drowsy-driver alert that warns if you are nodding off behind the wheel. There is also a system that detects people or objects approaching in the vehicle's path.

Hot news for 2016: Porsche cannot leave well enough alone, continually peppering its top-selling model with added features and performance.

Overview: Not by a long shot will you find this much variety in any other sport-utility lineup. Each of the Cayenne's seven distinct models comes with its own power system.

Base models have a 3.6-liter V-6 worth 300 horsepower. Next in line is a thrifty 240-horsepower 3.0-liter turbodiesel, while those seeking more rapid transit will be tempted by the twinturbo V-6 that puts out 420 horsepower in the Cayenne S, or 440 horses in the GTS. A 4.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 in the Turbo trumps the GTS with 80 more horsepower (to 520). For true street or track mastery, the Turbo S crushes it with 570 horsepower, but requires $99,000 more than a base Cayenne.

If fuel economy combined with performance is what you are chasing, the Cayenne S E-Hybrid uses a 95-horsepower electric

motor that functions with a 333-horsepower supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 for a combined 416 horsepower. Porsche claimed the E-Hybrid is just 0.2 of a second slower to 60 mph than the Cayenne S V-6 and can accelerate up to 78 mph on electric power only. The plug-in hybrid has a range of up to 30 miles before the gas engine kicks in. No matter the power source, you get an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Every Cayenne retains its superb off-road ability, assisted by a standard ride-height control, locking differentials and electronic safety systems, including hill-descent control and hill-hold to keep you in control on steep grades. The interior features a Panamerasedan-inspired five-gauge instrument cluster fronted by a beefy steering wheel. As with any Porsche, the assortment of individual options is astounding, with everything from carbonceramic brakes to a high-end Burmester-brand audio system.

Hot news for 2016: Who says wagons are passe? The Outback proves critics wrong with strength, stamina and impressive cargocarrying abilities.

Overview: At one time, Volvo had the market cornered when it came to spacious, yet unpretentious all-wheel-drive wagons. But now Subaru is solidly in the driver's seat with the ever-popular Outback wagon.

For the 2015 model year, the Legacysedan-based Outback received a number of critical updates.

Visually, the car was given a revised grille, lightweight aluminum hood, reshaped headlights and door-mounted mirror. The upgrades continued inside, with a quieter cabin, a reshaped dashboard, larger front seats and a more cavernous floor console.

The suspension was also retuned and Subaru added Active Torque Vectoring that applies slight brake pressure to the inside front wheel during a turn. The base 2.5-liter four-

cylinder engine is rated at 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque.

The optional 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine makes 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet.

Both engines are connected to continuously variable transmissions. A driver-controlled X-Mode for the standard all-wheel-drive system adjusts the transmission and engine output to reduce wheelspin.

X-Mode also includes Hill Descent Control, which keeps vehicle speed to a crawl when traveling slowly down a step and slippery slope.

Incline Start Assist briefly holds the vehicle when starting on hills, while a Hill Holder System prevents the Outback from rolling backward when stopped, until the accelerator is pressed.

When combined with the Outback's 8.7inch ground clearance, X-Mode makes the Outback more fit for rugged off-road duty.

Hot news for 2016: At long last a new and more modern Prius that is bigger and sexier, but uses less fuel. The Prius v wagon and Prius c small hatchback carry over, for now.

Overview: With sales of more than 3.5 million cars over the past three generations, the Prius remains the undisputed king of the hybrids, although its crown was starting to tarnish a bit.

To the rescue for 2016, a new model will set forth upon the land with completely redesigned â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and quite attractive â&#x20AC;&#x201D; sheet metal to give the car a more premium visage.

Dimensionally, the new Prius is about 2.4 inches longer, 0.6 inches wider and 0.8 inches lower than the previous version. The only slight sign of disappointment is the interior, in particular the dashboard with disconnected shapes amidst large swaths of vacant blahness.

That likely will not concern the Prius faithful, who are primarily concerned with how economical the hybrid will be.

While technical details are scarce as of this writing, Toyota claimed that the car will achieve a 10-percent improvement in combined city/highway fuel economy, which means the numbers would be about 55 mpg, up from 50. Toyota further stated that the mpg number is the highest of any hybrid â&#x20AC;Ś without a plug, that is.

A less weighty battery pack and more energy-dense batteries combined with a more efficient gas engine are being credited with this improvement.

Toyota also promises the Prius will ride and drive with a more responsive suspension to make use of a stiffer chassis.

Along with the usual standard features, Prius owners will also be able to access a range of active safety enhancements such as adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, collision avoidance with pedestrian detection and automatic high beams.

Volvo

Type: MPG (city/hwy): 2-/4-door hatchback 26/37

Hot news for 2016: VW's hatchback lineup gains three more options, including the new electric-only e-Golf, a five-door station wagon and the return of the bonkers R model.

Overview: VW's legendary hatchback has received plenty of love in the year since the seventh generation debuted. As predicted, there have been three major additions for 2016: a new Golf wagon, an electric e-Golf and the return of the hot R performance model.

All Golfs now come with an updated MIB II infotainment system that uses a 5-inch touch screen in base models and a 6.5-inch version in the rest. It responds to swiping and pinch zooming, just like a smartphone does, and it has USB connection.

The base Golf uses a turbocharged 170-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder. Optional is the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel that makes 150 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. As an alternative, you could choose the

new electric e-Golf. Although horsepower is a modest 115, there is 199 pound-feet of torque on tap at any speed. The lithium-ion battery is good for a range of 83 miles.

Selecting the sporty GTI gets you an improved version of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 210 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Or select the reintroduced R to boost those figures to 295/280. The R also boasts all-wheel drive and your choice of 18- or 19-inch wheels.

The base two- or four-door Golf S comes with alloy wheels and faux leather seating.

The SE and SEL pile on the content, including 17-inch wheels (16-inchers come on lesser trims), panoramic sunroof, Fender-brand premium sound package, push-button start plus backup and forward collision warning systems.

The GTI has 18-inch wheels, sport front seats, fog lamps, adaptive headlights and ambient interior lighting.

XC90

Hot news for 2016:Volvo finally revs up a more contemporary XC90 with leading-edge styling and small-but-potent engines.

Overview: The new XC90 has been changed from the original in every conceivable way and is roughly 250 pounds lighter, despite being about the same size.

The hood is decidedly longer and is fronted by a uniquely designed LED running-light array that Volvo refers to as Thor's Hammer. The interior is the epitome of Scandinavian design with natural-wood inlays, supple leather seats and trim and a classy crystal glass shift lever.

As for power, Volvo is focusing on fewer pistons. The T6 model uses a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The Drive-E uses the turbo for topend power and the belt-driven supercharger to help out at lower engine revs. For performance fans who prefer keeping it green, Volvo will

offer a T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid later in the model year. Both the T6 and T8 use an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The base all-wheel-drive XC90 Momentum trim level comes with all the basics plus a panoramic sunroof, 9-inch touch-screen display with navigation, power tailgate and a 330-watt 10-speaker audio system.

Momentum comes with a system that recognizes cyclists and pedestrians and applies the brakes should the driver fail to recognize an impending collision.

The Inscription model adds leather seat covers, wood trim, a 12.3-inch display screen and 20-inch wheels. The R-Design gets a sportier interior, mesh grille and 20-inch wheels. Available option packages allow you to add more active safety content, front- and rear-park assist, premium Bowers and Wilkinsbrand audio package and 21- or 22-inch wheels.
