Auto show provides glimpse of future cars and remembers the classics BY JEFF THITOFF The Columbus Dispatch The 2014 Columbus International Auto Show will save you time, take you back in time and — most importantly — provide you with a great time. The show starts tomorrow at the Columbus Convention Center, 400 N. High St., and runs through Sunday. “This is the once-a-year chance to see hundreds of vehicles — all different makes and models —under one roof,” said Jim Keim of Jim Keim Ford, chairman of the 2014 Columbus International Auto Show. “It would take an awfully long time to try and see all of them outside of the show.” Many of the newest vehicles will be on hand for your perusal. You can also take a trip down memory lane, as the show will feature a special anniversary display of Ford Mustangs. This is the 50th birthday of the Mustang and, according to Marie Gilman with the Columbus Auto Dealers Association, more than 20 models will be on hand dating back to 1965. Other classic cars on display include a 1964 Pontiac GTO, the first year the GTO was released, and a Chevrolet Corvette CR-5 driven by racing legend and 2014 Daytona 500 champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. Last year’s show saw record atten-
dance, a 33 percent increase from 2012. Gilman attributed the increase to the association’s continued focus on interactive elements. “There are so many things for people of all ages to do here,” Gilman said. “We’ve got the Ride & Drive and the RAM Off-Road Experience, but we’re also going to have a driving simulator.” The Ride & Drive exhibit allows attendees to take a free test drive from Mazda. Cars available for test driving include the 2014 Mazda3, the redesigned 2014 Mazda6 and the 2014 CX-5. If you want to go off-road, RAM lets you be a passenger in a truck that tackles various forms of terrain, including a small mountain (nearly 13 feet tall), a side hill and rocks and logs. Nationwide Insurance is bringing a 2014 NASCAR Nationwide Series Chevy Camaro and a racing simulator that allows drivers to test their skills on a virtual racetrack. Infiniti Red Bull Racing will show off Sebastian Vettel’s Formula One vehicle, along with gloves and a helmet he’s worn while racing. For the children, the Columbus Zoo will have animals on display Saturday (2-3 p.m.) and Sunday (12-1 p.m.); Matt the Balloon Guy will be on hand Saturday (11 a.m.-2 p.m.) and Sunday (1-3 p.m.); and Dialed Action Sports BMX Team will show off its stuff throughout

said some brands that haven’t been a part of the show in recent years are coming, like Airstream, Honda Powersports, Can-Am Spyder and Infiniti. “Back in Time,” a charity event sponsored by The Columbus Dispatch, will be held Friday evening to raise money for A Kid Again, Children’s Heart Foundation, Make-a-Wish Foundation and Ronald McDonald House. Last year’s event raised $64,500.

Auto association serving Ohio for 99 Years
Since 1915, the Columbus Automobile Dealers Association (CADA) has served as a liaison for the franchised new car dealers and the surrounding community. The association answers consumer inquiries, holds educational and legal seminars, bonds dealers for sales tax, monitors legislation, and tracks new and used vehicle registrations in Franklin County. The CADA also promotes dealership interests and charitable endeavors with its “Drive Columbus” feature in The Columbus Dispatch. The Columbus Automobile Dealers Association works diligently to actively promote a positive image for its members, their employees and the automotive industry. The 85 dealerships in the Greater Columbus area have a significant impact on the local economy. In 2013, these dealerships sold more than 80,400 new vehicles and had retail sales of $3.3 billion. Even though dealerships make up less than 5 percent of total retail establishments, dealerships contribute almost 20 percent of all retail sales in the Columbus area. Car dealers employ 5,400 employees and have a payroll of $250 million. The state of Ohio has more than $135 million in sales tax collected and paid that can be attributed to the Columbus franchised automobile industry. The CADA not only makes substantial contributions to the economic strength of central Ohio through sales and employment, but many of the dealerships make voluntary contributions to their local communities as well by donating time and financial resources to many different organizations. Membership with the CADA creates the opportunity to expand business markets through the Columbus International Auto Show, and it unifies a family of dealers and business people who are constantly striving for ways to broaden their horizons as salespersons, as business owners and as members of the Greater Columbus community.

Nearly one quarter of Ohioans in the market for a car this year Twenty-four percent of Ohio residents plan to lease or purchase a vehicle this year according Huntington Bank’s 2nd Annual Midwest Economic Index. Forecasts are for a solid year for the automotive industry and a banner year for buyers according to Greg Swain, regional manager of Huntington’s auto finance division. “We’re projecting strong auto sales in 2014 as consumers’ needs align with a buyer’s market,” Swain said. “This year’s auto show offers residents a look at the tremendous ingenuity that’s defining

Visitors at this year’s show will experience exhibits from more than 40 automobile manufacturers, including a special Mustang exhibit highlighting the car’s changing body styles over the years in celebration of its 50th anniversary. Classic autos will line the hallways. Huntington is now in its seventh consecutive year as presenting sponsor of the Columbus International Auto Show. The bank draws its

Ram combines best-in-the-business functionality and diversity to match Ford and Chevy/GMC, and does one better by being the first to offer a turbo-diesel option. The Ram 1500 has always had plenty of attitude, but who knew it could balance that macho-ness with fuel performance? That was partially addressed when Chrysler’s everpopular 3.6-liter V-6 found its way into the engine bay. The big news for 2014 is the optional 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6, which makes the
Ram 1500 the only light-duty diesel pickup in North America. Rams get further fuel-reduction assistance with stop-start technology that turns off the engine at rest, then instantly fires it up again once the brake pedal is released. Optional is an air suspension with load leveling and five height settings. A “thermal management system” is designed to quickly get the Ram’s crankcase oil and other fluids up to operational temperatures, which assists in conserving gas. As for
body styles, regular-cab models are available with a 6-foot, 4-inch box, or an 8-footer, while Quad Cabs get the shorter box only. When it comes to four-wheel drive, buyers can choose between a part-time system and an on-demand setup that automatically engages when road conditions warrant. Other neat touches for 2014 include a capless fuel-filler system and a front-park assist that will parallel park the “Beast” into incredibly tight spots. — Wheelbase Media

BY JEFF THITOFF The Columbus Dispatch Gas prices have been inching up in recent weeks, which is why the price at the pump still makes a significant impact when it comes to buying a new car. To that end, manufacturers have been building cars that run on electricity and hybrid vehicles that move on both electricity and gas. But that doesn’t mean they are neglecting the traditional gas-powered automobiles. As a matter of fact, the 2014 — and 2015 — lineups are showing there are plenty of options for those who don’t want to have to plug in. “When people come in to buy, we have a fuel economy calculator that will determine how much you should budget for fuel,” said Rich Newsome, general sales manager for Germain Honda of Dublin. “Fuel economy needs to be considered right along with the car payment and insurance costs.” The Honda Civic is a favorite when it comes to fuel efficiency, in part to its 143-horsepower, 1.8-liter, single overhead camshaft i-VTEC engine. “The ‘I’ stands for intelligence, because it adapts to how you drive,” Newsome said. “The onboard computer will pick up on your driving habits based on how much you punch it, how often you brake, and then the engine will function in a way that improves fuel efficiency.” Mitsubishi’s Mirage is rated at 40 mpg when equipped with a continuously variable transmission. “The biggest difference between the Mirage and its competitors is under the hood, with our three-cylinder engine,” said Nate Soronen, sales manager for Mitsubishi West. “By losing that one cylinder, you reduce internal friction and weight of the rotating assembly, which helps increase fuel efficiency.” BMW is using a different type of fuel in an effort to increase mpgs — diesel. The BMW 328d and 328 xDrive wagon
both operate with 4-cylinder 2.0 liter diesel turbo engines. “A diesel motor runs substantially higher compression ratios, which in turn leads to a lower maximum rpm and makes it more efficient,” said Eric Robare, new car sales manager for Kelly BMW. “The rear-wheel-drive vehicles get 45 miles per gallon on the freeway, and the all-wheel drives get 43 mpg.” Robare said the stigma about diesel is that it produces a “thick, black smoke like you see in trucks,” but that isn’t the case with these cars. “With these models, you can end up getting 600 to 700 miles on one tank of gas, depending on how you drive.” The 2015 model year also brings a new version of the Ford F-150 with an aluminum-alloy body, and Matt Bonanno, general manager for Jim Keim Ford, said it represents a seismic shift in the truck market. “We haven’t always been able to use the words ‘fuel efficiency’ and ‘fullsized pickups’ in the same sentence, but we will be able to now,” he said. “The official numbers haven’t yet been released, but the fuel efficiency on this truck will be improved.” Going to the aluminum-alloy body results in the truck losing about 700 pounds — without losing any power or strength, thanks to the optional allnew, 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine. “This is going to change the game for trucks,” Bonanno said. Ford offers eco-boost engines in most models, and through the use of turbo charging and direct injection, eco-boost engines can produce more power and maintain efficiency, said Dan Kehrer, general sales manger for Krieger Ford. “Eco-boost engines deliver great lowend torque responsiveness to provide power plus fuel economy,” he added. “New for 2014, we have a non-hybrid Fiesta that is gas powered and gets 45 mpg on the highway, and a Focus that gets 40 mpg on the highway,” he said.

A diesel Chevrolet? And it’s not a pickup? The Cruze’s new diesel option takes the fight to Volkswagen’s popular Jetta TDI. Not content with only offering a gas-sipping Eco model, Chevrolet is going against the grain by introducing a turbo-diesel engine for its compact Cruze sedan. The Clean Turbo-Diesel engine offers more horsepower and torque — 151 and 264 respectively — than either of the gasoline engines. While its zero-to-60-mph time in the mid8-second range will be enjoyed by some, everyone will appreciate the 700-plus-mile cruising range, thanks to a headline 46-mpg highway fueleconomy figure. The diesel comes with equipment equivalent to a 2LT trim in regular Cruzes. Not so long ago, transportation options for small businesses were fairly limited. If your daily routine involved any amount of schlepping, you were faced with the choice of buying a pickup, a commercial van or something substantially larger. But the past few years have given carpenters, florists and other business owners more options. The Ford Transit Connect is a great example of a vehicle that’s small enough to maneuver through cramped city streets, but big enough to carry loads of toolboxes, con-
duit and gardening equipment. Now, Chrysler has a new offering: the Ram ProMaster City. As you might guess from the name, the ProMaster City is a smaller version of the Ram ProMaster that debuted earlier this year. The ProMaster, however, is based on the Fiat Ducato, making it comparable in size to the Dodge Sprinter (now known as the MercedesBenz Sprinter). The Ram ProMaster City will be based on the Ducato’s slimmer sibling, the Fiat Doblo. That means it’ll be more akin to a convention-
al cargo van, but it should offer more styling features to make it stand out. Though Chrysler hasn’t released many details about the Ram ProMaster City, the company says that it “will compete with small commercial and passenger vans,” meaning that it could be an attractive option for shuttle and livery services. The ProMaster City is scheduled to debut as a 2015 model, so expect to see it roll into showrooms in mid- to late-2014. This article originally appeared on carconnection.com.

With the Equinox compact tall wagon still such a big success, 2014 changes are minor. With a larger optional V-6 engine and some additional content in 2013, Chevrolet smartly figured that was more than enough to keep its potential Equinox customers happy. Even after four years, it’s obviously “just right” for plenty of folks. Clever touches abound in the design, like the integrated rocker panels in the doors that reduce entry step-up height. (They also help keep pant legs from brushing up against the vehicle’s lower body area.) The interior is likely the Equinox’s best asset. It’s gorgeous and includes dual gloveboxes, easyto-read twin gauges set in large pods and plenty of handy storage bins. There’s also a versatile split-folding rear seat that can be adjusted fore and aft over an 8-inch range to optimize legroom or cargo capacity. A 182-horsepower 2.4-liter fourcylinder reigns as a base engine, with its 21/32 mpg city/highway fuel economy. The optional 3.6-liter V-6 with 301 horsepower earns a 17/25 mpg rating — pretty solid given the power level. A wide assortment of standard equipment (air conditioning, cruise control, keyless remote entry and power windows/locks/mirrors, etc.) comes in base versions, as does a 7-inch touch screen to work the standard audio system. GMC is making the 2014 model year a very short run. Meaning for those wishing for a little more luxury than Chevrolet but not wanting to shell out for the ubiquitous Cadillac, you had better hurry. The full-size Yukon and Yukon XL split their Chevy and Caddy counterparts pretty well. The biggest difference is the 20 extra inches of length and 14 extra inches of distance between the front and rear wheels tacked onto the XL. Although both vehicles
can hold up to nine people, the XL’s extra space is dedicated to cargo room. If power is more of a concern than fuel economy, there’s a 403-horsepower 6.2-liter V-8 that uses cylinder deactivation in lightload and cruise/idle situations, but that’s reserved for the top-end Denali. Both regularand extended-length models come in SLE, midlevel SLT and Denali trims with an assortment of gear specific to each package. Among the Denali’s many special touches
are power fold-and-tumble second-row bucket seats, power liftgate, heated and cooled leather seating surfaces, power adjustable pedals, heated windshield-washer system, backup sensor, Bose-brand 10-speaker surround-sound audio system and climate control. For 2014, Chevrolet has rolled forward all the changes it had planned for the Malibu’s midcycle updates, meaning the company has gone a long way to address criticisms. Exterior changes include a more aggressive front grille and lower fascia, although the Camaro-inspired taillights and rear end remain unchanged. Inside, the Malibu’s stylists redesigned the center console, which now provides more room and storage, while engineers somehow used black magic to deliver another 1.25 inches of rear legroom without altering the exterior dimensions. Standard on all but the base model is Chevrolet’s MyLink touch-screen audio/communications system with a faceplate that pivots upward to reveal a hidden 6-inch-deep storage area. The base engine remains a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 197 horsepower, although it now features direct fuel injection and a system that shuts off the engine when the vehicle is at rest, then fires it up when the brake pedal is released. Optional is an updated turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 259 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, which is up significantly. Also offered is the Malibu Eco that uses General Motors’ mild-hybrid system (called eAssist) shared with the Buick LaCrosse and Regal. Other Eco technologies include low-rolling resistance tires and better aerodynamics. Also new are optional blind-spot and rear-cross traffic alerts. — Wheelbase Media

The quick-and-dirty description of the ELR is that it’s Cadillac’s version of the Chevrolet Volt, a fancier example of GM’s advanced electric technology. But this isn’t a case of the company trying to put Cadillac lipstick on a Chevrolet. Far from it. While there’s a lot of commonality between the ELR and the Volt, they are wholly different products geared to very different audiences. The ELR was actually designed to be a “halo” car — a superstar — that shows Cadil-
lac’s design and technology capabilities. So what’s so great about the ELR? In a word, style. On the inside, there are two available trims, including an optional Opus semi-aniline leather-seating package. Real wood trim is featured, along with optional carbon fiber. For tech buffs, there are “8-inch configurable instrument and driver information displays, offering four configurations ranging from elegantly simple to technologically detailed information,” according to Cadillac.
The ELR is powered by a 154-horsepower electric motor, which puts out 295-poundfeet of torque. The ELR is expected to accelerate to 60 mph from zero in about 8.0 seconds. The ELR has a range on electric-only power of about 35 miles, and a range of more than 300 miles when the gasoline 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine kicks in. A full recharge takes about 4.5 hours, depending on ambient temperature, with a 240-volt power source. — Wheelbase Media
