on the cover Trump’s election generated an immediate and wide-ranging response within minority arts communities. In addition to Onda Latina’s “Trumpocalypse,” a night of spoken-word and performance art at Wild Goose Creative, poet and writer Scott Woods solicited black musicians to contribute to a 10-track, post-election mixtape dubbed Babylon for Breakfast, and William Evans, Columbus-based editor-inchief of the pop-culture website Black Nerd Problems, posted an open call for election-themed essays, which have been released in a steady stream on the site since mid-November. Here’s our look at how some are gearing up to fight back.

We’re officially halfway through December, so that means it’s time to start preparing for the New Year. We thought we’d create a playlist as you face the apprehension, despair and, yes, hope that come with that dropping ball.

Despite the title, the 2000 song really doesn’t provide any commentary on the 1998 U.S./U.K. bombing of Iraq, but the chaotic music and lyrical flow is appropriate for these times. There’s also a great line that sums up how some are feeling right now: “Get back home, things are wrong/ Well, not really, it was bad all along.”

Enough with the doom and gloom! Just “cradle your head in your hands and breathe … just breathe.”

This was the first song that popped into my head given the dread some are feeling following the conclusion of the 2016 presidential election.

After further research, I discovered Presidentelect Trump actually used the 1987 song — much to Michael Stipe’s dismay — on the campaign trail, which makes this entry even more fitting … and prophetic.

“EdgE of sEvEnTEEn” by sTEviE niCKs A white-winged dove, a sea changing colors and a flood of tears. The hodge-podge of imagery in this song seems to go well with the instability that 2017 may bring.

Also, the song was allegedly written as Nicks was grieving two major deaths, so given those lost in 2016, the mood is right.

artinez-Cruz described Onda Latina in similar terms, referring to the arts event as both another step in a continuing healing process and as a means of reestablishing presence. “[Election] Tuesday bled into Wednesday where you’re still taking stock. Is this for real? Am I here?” she said.

By the time Onda Latina rolled around in early December, some of these uncertainties — fueled by a realization that, even if voters didn’t explicitly endorse Trump’s border-wall tough talk, his language hadn’t disqualified him in the eyes of much of the electorate — had calcified into resilience.

“My tagline is, ‘I don’t self-immolate, I create,’” Martinez-Cruz said. “So you cry, but then you take refuge in the strength of your friends and your kin and your kindred spirits, and you take a stand.”

In one Onda Latina reading, a poet attempted to chart a way forward through the wreckage, speaking of “new worlds made from broken shards.” A second spoken-word piece envisioned a land “where all are welcomed, understood, embraced, loved.” Additionally, a number of the written missives submitted by audience members to a “chusma” box (the word translates to “rabble” and more broadly signifies the unwashed masses) and read aloud exhibited early signs of hope, reading: “I’m going to make it”; “I’m terrified for my undocumented family … but I’m not going to be quiet about it”; “Still glad being here.”

The irreverent, politically charged singalong concluded Onda Latina Ohio’s “Swing State Latinx after the Trumpocalypse,” a night of spoken word, music and performance art designed to allow the local Hispanic community a safe space to vent following the election of Donald Trump, whose presidential campaign was launched amid divisive, build-a-wall rhetoric aimed squarely at the Latinx population (Latinx, pronounced “La-teen-ex,” is a genderneutral alternative to Latino/Latina).

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best,” Trump said when he announced his candidacy in June 2015. (The Electoral College is expected to affirm November’s election results when it votes on Dec. 19, and the inauguration would take place on Jan. 20.) “They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us.

They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”

“When [Trump] says, ‘They’re rapists,’ that has messages about Latino sexuality. And he’s giving messages about how all Latino and Latina bodies … belong on the other side of a wall or a divide,” said Ohio State University Assistant Professor of Latino/a Cultural and Literary Studies Paloma Martinez-Cruz, who organized the Onda Latina gathering. “No matter our generation, or what our nationality or citizenship is, the message is our presence is somehow illegal. And you feel the imprint of what that is getting at. We’re not just Latinos anymore. We’re Latinos after the Trumpocalypse. And that is a crisis situation.”

Columbus-based editor-in-chief of the popculture website Black Nerd Problems, posted an open call for election-themed essays, which have been released in a steady stream on the site since mid-November.

“There’s a reason these essays are still trickling out weeks after the campaign: I want to keep this at the forefront,” said Evans, who was careful to include an author photo with each essay to further personalize the words for readers. “I wanted to make sure there were pictures of these people front-and-center. This is what these people look like. These are the others — the people that feel overlooked or disregarded with this incoming administration. The people that really feel like they don’t have a place in this new envisioned America.”

These include local poet Ethan Rivera, who said he spent the days following the election feeling angry and out of place, unable to give words to a toxic cocktail of emotions and unable to connect with a community that shared his unique ethnic background.

“I couldn’t be like, ‘Hey, look at all my Puerto Rican-Armenian friends,” said Rivera, whose Latino and Middle Eastern genetic makeup left him feeling uniquely targeted throughout the election, whether debate centered on border walls, registries or halting immigration from Muslim-majority Middle Eastern countries. “It’s interesting to have all of yourself attacked when you’re so many different things.”

With Black Nerd Problems’ open-submission call, Rivera finally saw a way to vent these pentup frustrations without being forced to labor over the numerous minute details required of his poems. “I just got to say how it felt and move on,” he said.

Rivera, who was born in Florida, grew up outside Virginia Beach, Virginia, and relocated to Columbus a decade ago to attend OSU, has long embraced writing as a means of coming to terms with his background and attempting to figure out his place in the world as a result of it.

But the incoming Trump administration has driven the writer to continue developing a broader, more-communal view.

“My dad and I had a conversation right after the election, and one of the things he said to me was, ‘Ethan, our only job now is to survive,’” Rivera said. “And I think part of it is about surviving, sure, but it’s also about resisting the things that should not happen — and I’m thinking of specific things like the Muslim registry and the attacks on people of color. That’s an America I don’t want to live in. We need to keep fighting and not let those things become the power structure.”

On closer listen, however, something about the holiday tune being belted out by the rowdy chorus of revelers was slightly askew.

According to Martinez-Cruz, this resilience is informed both by a deep respect for the elders and a belief in the promise of the youth. “My grandparents saw segregated drinking fountains. My parents were beaten in school for speaking Spanish,” she said. “We’re holding steady because the ancestors have been through so much and still managed to transmit some dignity. …

Now my kids need to see what we come up with.”

Even so, Martinez-Cruz expressed a fear for current students registered under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, an immigration policy initiated by the Obama administration in 2012 that allowed undocumented immigrants who entered the United States as minors to receive renewable reprieve from deportation. (Trump said he would rescind the policy if elected and the status of the program remains an open question.)

Yuri Arteaga, who moved to the United States with his family in December 2002 at age 5, enrolled in DACA in 2012 and has renewed his status every two years. It’s currently set to expire in 2018, at which point he’d either be forced to marry — something the second-year OSU accounting major said he’s in no rush to do — or return to El Salvador, a country he hasn’t visited since settling in Whitehall as a child. Further complicating matters, Arteaga’s older brother is a naturalized U.S. citizen, having been born during a stint when the family lived in California in the late ’80s.

“Before, I had a clear vision of how my life would go, and now it’s blurry,” Arteaga said. “There are many of us who have been here our whole lives, who aren’t criminals, and we don’t have help. We don’t have someone speaking for us.

“On Facebook there was a post from an undocumented student who said she had a 4.0 grade-point average and graduated valedictorian, and in the comments you’d see, ‘She’s illegal. She’s a criminal. Deport her.’ The way to combat that is to let people know we’re here to be citizens. We’re here to contribute to society. And we deserve to be in this country.”

Recently, Martinez-Cruz was part of a contingent of more than 1,500 OSU professors, students and alumni who submitted a letter to Ohio State President Michael Drake asking the university to implement a number of measures designed to preserve campus as a sanctuary for “all Latino/a, minority, and LQBTQ students, staff, and their family members, including especially those who face imminent deportation.”

“By definition, these [DACA] individuals arrived as children and have grown up working to make real the American Dream. We support them strongly and are committed to their success,” the university said in a statement to Alive. “We also support strongly those programs that have been established to help them achieve their goals. Ohio State is engaged in active dialogue with our peers and policymakers around the country, and we continue to closely monitor this important issue. Our priority remains the safety and well-being of our students, faculty and staff.”

“My wife and I sat our 15-year-old and 7-year-old down and said, ‘Regardless of who wins, we’re going to do what we need to do to make sure our family is safe and to make the world a better place,’” Lomax said. “The thing I’m trying to teach my children through this is that it doesn’t matter who the president is, because that person can’t take away your personal power.”

While Lomax wasn’t caught off-guard by the election results — “You talk about anger and needing to collect yourself, but for me it was just another Tuesday,” he said, and laughed — his family required a bit more space, particularly

hough the artistic outcry has taken multiple forms, emerging in the written word in the ongoing Black Nerd Problems essay series and musically in the guise of Babylon, a genre-blurring mashup of jazz, hiphop and R&B that features contributions from Qamil Wright (“March On”), Krate Digga (“Freedom”) and more, the responses have been largely collective, centered on the idea of community-building rather than staking out solitary ground.

“I didn’t want to do anything personal,” said Woods, who avoided his usual outlet — poetry — believing it to be “too small for this moment,” at least initially. “To me, the first steps had to be communal. Here’s how we’re feeling. Here are all the things we want to draw your attention to as a community, and especially as a black artistic community, which is a slice of culture that has forever been on the back burner.”

Across the city, writers, artists and poets started taking these first steps almost immediately after polling stations closed.

“Art is on the frontline where people interact with issues. Starting day one, someone is putting a song out; someone is painting something; someone is definitely writing something,” said Woods, who received more than 20 submissions for the Babylon mixtape, eventually whittling it down to 10 tracks for the final version, which was released online via SoundCloud in mid-December. “Even in the instrumental tracks there’s a tone and a voice that is asking you to think.

Hopefully it’s a good first step to starting conversation.”

A bulk of the Babylon submissions were written prior to the election, and songs cover a wide terrain, exploring issues of institutionalized racism, poverty, class divides and police violence. On “#BlackLivesMatter Pt. 1: Amerikkka,” a raised fist of a jazz cut first released in December 2014, drummer/composer Mark Lomax and tenor saxophonist Eddie Bayard craft a musical backdrop for Jeremiah Wright’s fiery “God Damn America” sermon, which finds the

Chicago pastor grappling with the divide between mankind’s flawed kingdom (America) and the divine kingdom of heaven.

“I don’t see this as a protest album.

I see it as a larger communal statement of power in the face of fascism, or in the face of anything that threatens to take away our rights, which is what I think Trump represents,” said Lomax. “Anything positive that’s going to happen, it has to happen in the

LocaL businesses get pushback for pro-trump signage

By JoeL oLiphint the year leading up to the presidential election, and in the month or so since Donald Trump clinched the Electoral College, there has been no shortage of political opinions expressed vociferously across Columbus. Normally, those opinions come from individuals, not businesses.

But when a couple of local establishments seemed to endorse Trump, citizens took notice — especially on social media.

In the days following the election, a sign outside the Upper Arlington location of beloved Italian eatery Tommy’s Pizza stated, “Congrats Donald Trump and Mike Pence.” (Pence also visited Tommy’s on the campaign trail in October.) Soon enough, a photo of the sign began circulating on Facebook, prompting some users to vow never again to dine on Tommy’s famous cracker crust.

Tommy’s Pizza owner Rick Iacono declined to comment for this story, but a source familiar with the situation said the sign affected business.

A barrage of angry customers called the store to express their disapproval, and the number of diners on a typical day decreased before the message was taken down less than two weeks after it initially appeared. “Business was suffering like crazy,” the source said.

Before the election, an Instagram user also spotted a Trump/ Pence campaign sign in the window of another business, Clintonville natural-health store Momentum 98, which opened in 1980 and has been in its current High Street location since 1988. When reached by phone for comment, Momentum owner Phil Wilson expressed outrage over the perceived endorsement.

“I did not put that sign in the window. ... If anyone put a Trump sign in the window, it’s grounds for termi-

nation. That’s not appropriate for a business,” he said, then paused while a woman in the background said to him, “I put it there.”

“My wife put it there,” Wilson continued, “and she should not have because that’s very embarrassing for me as a business owner to have my name associated with an egomaniac.”

Wilson went on to clarify that his wife asked her son to put the sign in the window, and he did as she requested, although it didn’t remain in view for long. Wilson emphasized the sign was unauthorized and that Momentum

98 didn’t endorse either candidate. “It’s totally unacceptable for a business to make a statement like that in a politically charged arena,” he said.

For his part, Wilson was a strong supporter of Bernie Sanders. “Certainly, I think Clinton is a murderer,” he said.

“I don’t respect her. I’ve read hundreds of stories about her. She’s in bed with Monsanto. She’s not in favor of holistic health. … When Bill Clinton was doing cocaine trafficking in Arkansas, a lot of people who were gonna testify against him died mysteriously.”

But Wilson’s disdain for Clinton doesn’t translate into support for Donald Trump. “[Trump] is emotionally scarred. He has a lot of problems, and it’s embarrassing to have someone like that as a president-elect,” he said.

“It’s totally fine for my employees to have their viewpoint,” Wilson continued.

“There are people who work for me who are in favor of Trump, and I guess my wife is in favor of Trump. … My hope is still that neither Trump [nor] Clinton become the next president. I’m hoping for a miracle that someone else will — somehow, some way.”

Each candidate’s rallies were different and similar all at once. Some gave you access to wander the venue and interact with supporters, and others kept all the journalists in a small pen and encouraged the thousands of people in the crowd to boo and heckle the media.

It was an interesting experience to have a perfectly pleasant conversation while photographing someone before the event began, and then spot them in the crowd yelling at the “crooked media.” My colleagues and I have been called liars and flicked off, and then asked if we could email them some pictures we took.

While working the events, I got so focused on doing my job that I often for-

as they teetered one way or another on the political scale.

At the rallies I covered, I was often one of the younger photographers capturing the event, and sometimes the only woman. Being in a male-dominated field, I felt even more pressure to prove I could do any assignment a man could do, whether that was carrying heavy equipment, competing for space on the risers or the buffer and standing up for myself when I needed to. Luckily, most of the other seasoned photographers covering these events had my back and helped each other when they could in the madness of the moment.

job as a photojournalist has led me to some interesting places. I’ve tiptoed around drug dens covering the heroin epidemic in our region, entered countless homes to document intimate family moments from California to Vermont and, in 2016, often had a front row seat to the presidential election.

I had the opportunity to cover the campaigns of every major candidate multiple times for publications like The New York Times and The Washington Post. Freelancing as a photographer in a swing state like Ohio kept me busy covering rallies, meeting different types of voters and capturing regions

got I was only a few feet away from the most talked-about people in the world, one of whom would be elected as president. If you stepped too close, or you were in a place you weren’t supposed to be, Secret Service would correct your mistake immediately. But the goal was always the same: to take a picture that stands out from the millions of political shots taken each election cycle. I would look for any photo that showed the candidate in a new light, such as letting their guard down for a split second, as well as capturing the people who so passionately supported them.

The people in the crowd were often more interesting than the candidates themselves. The collective behavior of people feeding off one another at these events, forming bonds over their common interests and genuinely believing in their cause and their candidate was fascinating to watch.

Covering each candidate in a short amount of time, I learned that, more than anything, everyone just wanted their voices to be heard.

hen Winston Hightower was a sophomore in high school, he found a cassette tape by bluesy garage-punk duo Bassholes at the Whetstone branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library.

“I was like, ‘Whoa, this is a black dude and white dude duo in Columbus. I gotta check this out,” said Hightower, referring to the Colum-

bus expats in Bassholes, Lamont “Bim” Thomas (Obnox) and Don Howland (Gibson Bros.). “And that was it. That was my intro to everything.”

Previously a fan of punk-rock in the vein of Bad Brains and Black Flag, the Bassholes tape sent Hightower down a musical rabbit hole that continues to this day as the musician,

now 23, is set to release his second cassette of lo-fi bedroom pop on Superdreamer Records at Café Bourbon Street on Friday, Dec. 16. The solo albums come after Hightower, who records and performs as “Winston HYTWR” by himself and “HYTWR” as a full band, played in several of his friends’ bands and fronted trio Tastes Kinda Like Sad.

Since emerging from his season of reclusion, Hightower has continued to pursue his solo project while also playing in hardcore act Minority Threat.

Exploration Date, the new Winston HYTWR cassette (also available online at Bandcamp) has a similar homemade, Deerhunter-meets-Alex G sensibility as Too Close to Home, though this time the childhood photos in the jacket feature only Hightower and his mother, whom he calls his “legit best friend.”

Throughout the album, Hightower purposefully obfuscates his vocals, coating them in effects and fuzz to turn his voice into another instrument in the mix next to guitars and a Casio keyboard. “[The lyrics] always mean something. When I’m playing, I’m singing it full-heartedly, [but] when I record it I have to listen back to the song so many times. It just makes me wanna mumble it out because I feel shy about it,” said Hightower, smiling as he often does when he speaks.

To interpret the two-minute tunes, Hightower includes lyrics in the cassette liner notes, which read like direct, minimalist poems. Despite claiming to not have a way with words, Hightower’s expressions of angst (“There’s a hybrid hate in the motherland”) and despair (“I guess I could lay here for a while, all alone until I fully expire”) add layers of meaning to his peculiar and affecting brand of mumblecore.

Hightower, who performs live with Bryant Strayer on bass and housemate Jeff Kleinman on drums, hopes to release a full-band, full-length HYTWR record on vinyl sometime in the next year. “I’m trying to figure out how to put as many songs as possible on it,” he said.

“At one time I was in 12 bands at once. That was before my dad died.

Then I quit all of them,” Hightower said recently at a Downtown coffee shop.

“My dad passed away about two years ago. After my dad passed, I stopped going to shows and kind of stopped doing anything for a really long time.”

While still reeling from his father’s death, Hightower spent about a month on the road with one of his former bands, Slugbugs. At a tour stop in Boston, he found himself at an old diner. “I was texting my mom about this diner, because I’d heard the name before,” said Hightower, who discovered his dad used to eat there in his days as a traveling salesman. “And it ended up being Father’s Day. We had to wait two hours at this diner to get a seat, and there’s all these people having fun with their dads. … It really sucked.”

After quitting his bands and sequestering himself, Hightower discovered some of his dad’s photos that he’d previously never seen. The happy pictures of himself as a child and his parents inspired Hightower to process his loss through music, so he recorded a batch of songs while wrestling with his grief.

After sitting on the songs for a while, he decided to release them as a cassette, Too Close to Home, which came out in February on Superdreamer.

“The cover is me and my mom and my dad,” he said. “I have a picture of my mom in the insert and a picture of my dad in the insert and then one of me.”

The release show, held the day after his dad’s birthday, was a turning point for Hightower. “There were so many people there. I had a raffle, a helium tank. I had all these random prizes. I tried to make it like a kid’s party,” he said. “People had fun. I sold out of all my tapes. I hadn’t done the solo thing before, but it was crazy. It felt awesome, and it made me feel a lot different. After that, it was completely different.”

Seun Kuti

sounds off on struggles of oppressed communities

“Every few years politicians come,” Nigerian Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti sings on “Gimme My Vote Back (C.P.C.D.).” “They come with their politics of hate and them take and divide us.”

Kuti’s lyrics may resonate with both Nigerians — who elected President Muhammadu Buhari, whom The Economist called “the least awful” of the two candidates, in 2015 — and Americans, who are still reeling from the contentious 2016 presidential election.

However, in a recent telephone interview, Kuti — son of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti — mentioned he was thinking of all governments when writing the song, one of three tracks on his Struggle Sounds EP, released last September.

“Politicians and corporations … are in cahoots against the working class,” said Kuti, who will play Alrosa Villa with his band Egypt 80 on Friday, Dec. 16. “I realized that all over the world, it’s the same thing.”

In the song, he also speaks of the “Corporate Public Control Department,” a term he applies to governments, which he says, “Keep people in check for the corporations to run society as they see fit.”

“As you can see, the corporation that is building the pipeline in North Dakota, they are not protesting,” he continued. “It is the people that are protesting, but the corporations, they don’t have a counter-protest. … Their interests are already guarded by the officials.”

Kuti, also a saxophonist, embodies the same revolutionary spirit as his father, who criticized the Nigerian government in his music and even formed his own political party. The elder Kuti endured jail time and government attacks, one of which resulted in the death of his mother.

Since his death in 1997 from complications from AIDS, Fela Kuti has been celebrated in many forms, including the Tony-award-winning Broadway musical “Fela!”

Seun Kuti, who stepped in to lead his father’s Egypt 80 band at just 14 years old, didn’t feel pressured by the weight of his father’s legacy or threatened by potential government retaliation. “It was just necessary,” he said of the decision to keep his father’s music and movement alive.

“My music is a tool of pan-Africanism,” Kuti said. “I believe that there has to be a connection between the diaspora and the motherland. … I truly believe that it is the duty of African governments to be invested in African communities, not just in Africa, but all over the world.”

Although Kuti strives to “spark awareness” and “raise consciousness” through his music, he recognizes his own shortcomings as a leader for the black community, which he said relies too heavily on guidance from celebrities.

“It really hurts me that the only spokespersons for black people are entertainers and sportsmen and women,” he

said. “Even though I’m well invested in this aspect of my people, there are many scholars who know more details and spend more time researching and learning than I do, and who are more qualified to speak for the collective.”

Although Kuti is a proponent of unity among black people worldwide, on his song “African Dreams” he cautions African youth against abandoning the continent to chase

the superficial “American Dream” sold by the media.

“We need … to build an Africa that can meet future generations’ dreams and aspirations,” he explained. “That should be our main goal in the world today instead of trying to be as rich as we can.”

While Kuti is devoted to the welfare of Africans and those of African descent, he said his message is for all oppressed people worldwide.

“I think there’s a bigger struggle in the world, which is a class struggle,” he said. “That is what ‘Struggle Sounds’ is talking about on my record.”

Attendees of Kuti’s show can expect to hear his new material, as well as his father’s music.

He also hopes the audience will be inspired by his vision for “a world where everybody can be respected and live in happiness.” “We’re all part of the same struggle,” he said.

Fortunately he’s back to uncorking XXX, “Caligula”-esque tales just one song later, like a kid content to flick spitballs from the back of the classroom rather than worrying if he’ll be eating with the popular clique in the lunchroom.

Kool Keith emerged as Dr. Octagon in 1996, announcing, “I’m not just a doctor, I am a man.”

Nearly every move since has further distanced the Bronx-born rapper, who first surfaced in ’88 with Ultramagnetic MCs, from this humble descriptor. Whether he’s adopting outsized musical alter egos (Black Elvis, Poppa Large, etc.) or spinning trippy, tongue-twisting verses that mirror the feel of navigating a Dali canvas, little about Kool Keith could be termed ordinary.

Drummer/vocalist Felix Walworth stands front and center onstage in Brooklyn’s Told Slant but hangs back behind the kit in bands like Eskimaux, Florist and Bellows, all of which are part of a loose collective of musicians and artists known as the Epoch.

Though you might assume keeping time in multiple bands would make Walworth’s own musical outlet an afterthought, the musician’s excellent sophomore album, Going By, released in June on Double Double Whammy, proves otherwise.

“Why don’t you comfort me?”

Walworth asks on the tender “Low Hymnal,” then leaves the question behind, mustering a solution with an

inwardly directed pep talk: “Felix, you can battering-ram this life.” Brute force, though, is not a common tactic for Walworth, whose intimate songs feel like closed-door confessionals — the musical version of hunkering beneath a blanket with a flashlight, fountain pen and notebook.

“I want someone to grab my face, tuck my hair behind my ears and say, ‘Isn’t this silly and aren’t you beautiful?’” Walworth admits in a quavering voice alongside softly picked electric guitar and decidedly un-Southern banjo on “Tsunami,” then gives the mundane yet heartbreaking reason why it probably won’t happen: “I don’t know how to talk to you without a can in my hands.”

Near the midpoint of “Electric,” a track off Master Servos’ self-titled debut album, musicians Ian Pushea and Matt Auxier stroll right up to the edge of the cosmos. “And then I stood at the edge,” the two intone, delivering their words atop stabs of vintage synth, nothing but wide-open galaxy ahead.

It’s a small moment, but it captures the sense of limitless possibility the two envisioned when they first launched Master Servos in late 2014.

At the time, Pushea’s former band Red Feathers, a rock ’n’ roll quartet with a hard-won reputation as a borderlineunhinged live act, was in the midst of dissolving, while Auxier was entering into his final months playing guitar with prog-rock behemoth EYE. So, naturally, the two longtime friends gravitated to synth-pop.

“We both have been playing guitar in guitar bands forever and needed something different,” said Auxier, who joined Pushea for a mid-December interview Downtown. (The two will be back together to celebrate the release of their debut album on Kvltvre Klvb with a concert at Ace of Cups on Friday, Dec. 16.)

Initially, the two holed up for months of writing sessions that produced more than 40 songs, as well as several versions of the band. “We kept going through these [musical] transformations as it was happening,” Pushea said.

Despite the lengthy gestation period, actual songs tended to arrive in quick succession, helped along by a truncated approval process.

“When you’re in a band with five people, it takes a while to write a song.

If one person in the band doesn’t like a part, it’s like, ‘Well, OK, let’s figure out another part,’” said Pushea, noting that Master Servos already has two more

full albums’ worth of material recorded and at the ready. “With just the two of us it’s easier. If I say it sucks, it sucks.

If he says it sucks, it sucks. And then we move on.”

Early in the band’s history, Pushea and Auxier experimented with live drums, eventually gravitating toward an electronic kit as a means of distancing the new project from their rock roots.

Regardless, there’s an undeniable Sunset Strip swagger that bleeds into percussive cuts like “NYE,” which comes on like a bratty outtake from the “Drive” soundtrack, and “Jesus Came Down,” a buzzing thumper that mimics the feel of hauling down a neon-lit thoroughfare. This head rush is countered by slower, trippier numbers like “Clouds” and the hazy “Pills and Therapy,” which sounds like it’s knocked back plenty of the former (while skipping out almost entirely on the latter).

The pair’s musical chemistry, further honed by years of friendship, was somewhat lacking the first time the two played in a band together seven or eight years ago in Super Silver, a precursor to EYE from which Pushea was booted — or at least that’s how he remembered it.

“I didn’t kick him out, really,” Auxier said. “[EYE drummer] Brandon [Smith] and I just started getting into weird, avant-garde Kraut-rock shit, and Ian was already starting to go the other way, so it just didn’t work out.”

“Musically we were pulling apart,” Pushea said. “But those guys were also getting more serious about what they were doing and I was getting more careless.”

With Master Servos, these concerns have completely dissipated. Though the two don’t always take themselves seriously, they approach the music with the needed gravity.

“Nothing annoys me more than when people are like, ‘I don’t care what people think of this.’ I do,” Pushea said. “That’s why we’ve waited so long. That’s why we kept throwing things on the wall. That’s why we kept trying to figure out our sound. In some way, some people out there will have expectations of what we’re going to do. I’m not trying to break those expectations, but I’m trying to live up to them in some way. I don’t want people to hate what I’m doing.”

About six years ago, David Banbury and Lou Poster were hanging out at Café Bourbon Street, kicking around ideas for a Christmas punk band in the vein of Iggy and the Stooges. eighborhoods are changing, and in many cases don’t even resemble themselves.

PAST Productions tackles the issue of gentrification, among others, in its presentation of August Wilson’s “Radio Golf,” through Dec. 17 at the Garden Theater.

The play, the final installment in the playwright’s “Pittsburgh Cycle,” a collection of 10 plays set in the Pennsylvania city in each decade of the 20th century, is not only the most recent work, completed and first staged in 2005, but also the most contemporary in setting, the story taking place in the 1990s. It follows two moneyed black men and their efforts to redevelop an area of Pittsburgh.

“These are things we’re dealing with still, the city versus the suburbs, things we’re talking about and fighting for here in our community,” said director Truman Winbush.

“When we did ‘Two Trains Running’ [in March], I said I felt like those characters were people I grew up around, voices I heard going to the barbershop with my father,” Winbush said. (“Two Trains Running” is set in the 1960s.)

“With ‘Radio Golf,’ I feel like these are people of my generation.”

It’s not the generational aspect of Wilson’s work but its timelessness that makes him one of the previous century’s greatest American playwrights.

“So many things he touches on are relevant to today, from violence by African-Americans on African-Americans, by police on African-Americans, to race relations, to the demise of neighborhoods, to economic opportunity,” Winbush said. “They force the audience to think about a community as a whole, to go beyond to other parts of existence, to see how the past directly affects the present and future.”

“Radio Golf” also marks the final piece of the year-long August Wilson Festival. Conceived and overseen

by Short North Stage in partnership with PAST Productions, the festival included theater, dance and music performances by seven different organizations and ensembles. The festival recently received an award for artistic excellence from the Greater Columbus Arts Council.

Short North Stage co-founder Peter Yockel said the festival provided “a way to view American history of the 20th century in a different way.”

“Especially for most in the white community,” he said. “For blacks, it was an opportunity to see their lives depicted onstage, for some for the first time.”

“No one organization could have done this the way it was done,” Yockel continued, pointing to the presentation of full productions and staged readings by Short North Stage and PAST Productions, but also to programming by the Columbus Museum of Art, the Mark Lomax Trio and the Berry & Nance Dance Project, among others.

Winbush said the festival forced his ensemble to “step up our game.”

“Of everything we’d done before, nothing could match this project,” he said. “So much of his work is what we want to be.”

“Some of the most extraordinary acting on our stage has come from this festival,” Yockel said.

Yockel credited the festival’s artistic director, Mark Clayton Southers, a Pittsburgher and August Wilson expert, with helping drive the festival’s success.

“It was an exciting time … a great city and great supporters of the art,” Southers said. “I really hope there were some things we were able to convey to the audiences.”

In addition to hosting PAST Productions’ “Radio Golf” at the Garden Theater, Short North Stage is presenting its own, original holiday-themed show this month.

“Christmas in Columbus” is a revue/ jukebox musical of sorts. Set in the Capital City and employing holiday favorites, the show borrows a vibe from Radio City’s “Christmas Spectacular,” which “Christmas in Columbus” co-writer Jackie Comisar appeared in as a non-Rockette actor and singer for three years.

Gideon the Elf has missed the Polar Express to the North Pole and will be spending more of the holiday season in Columbus than expected. A local family shows him what Columbus has to offer, along the way rekindling some of its own faded holiday spirit.

“Once we had the elf concept we just looked for a way to have the story take us around to these different places” in Columbus, co-writer Dionysia Williams said.

The NesT: DeDicaTeD To improv

By Jim FisCher The Columbus improv comedy scene is significantly bigger than it was when Tara DeFrancisco was growing up in Worthington, but there’s still plenty of room for growth.

That’s part of why the veteran of Chicago’s iO Theater, Second City and ComedySportz troupes decided to come home and start The Nest Theatre, a Downtown space dedicated to presenting improvisational comedy, with her longtime performing partner Rance Rizzutto.

The Next Theatre opened in November after a few months of renovations. DeFrancisco and Rizzutto have been doing shows on weekends for the past five weeks. The Nest also offers classes in improv, with a new session to begin with the new year. And while the pair is new to the scene, it certainly has a pedigree: Teaching in Chicago, students included a handful of current “Saturday Night Live” cast members.

“Once we had done what we set out to do [in Chicago], we thought we should do it for ourselves,” DeFrancis-

co said in a recent interview inside the Cherry Street venue. “The goal was to come back home and start a theater.”

“We have friends in troupes in Columbus but there was no dedicated space for improv,” DeFrancisco said.

“There’s a community with a good chunk of knowledge but we’re hoping to expand it,” Rizzutto said.

The duo’s centerpiece production is “Here: The Musical,” a long-form, two-person improvised musical play.

DeFrancisco and Rizzuto have been doing “Here” for about two years, and have toured the show to 50 cities in 17 countries (including October’s Columbus Improv Festival).

The Nest also presents “Storyteller,” a larger ensemble piece that pairs an audience suggestion with true stories from the lives of the cast members, Cage Match, a weekly contest between improv teams to stay on the stage, and a Jam, sort of an open mic for wouldbe improv-ers.

I want to initiate or trigger that play, passion and joy in the viewer.

“Some art is supposed to respond to what’s happening politically and culturally, and to make a statement on that. I feel like my work is not the opposite, but that it offers comfort

and a warm hug, a bit of release and relief.”

The patterns and colors of the ’90s just happen to be the personal palette of both women, who grew up a few years apart in Upper Arlington, although they did not know each other until they were adults.

“I kind of look up to her as a big sister,” Smith said.

“We share the same foundations, developed under similar circumstances.”

Students in Liz Roberts’ Experimental Video class will exhibit their semester projects at MINT on Thursday, Dec. 15, in a show titled “Super Video Graphics Array.”

Roberts said she designed the course to balance the concepts and techniques from experimental film and video art.

“This show will be all installation work, moving images you experience rather than watch,” she said. “It’s challenging. These students are used to making films.

A video installation is more about moving through, about the body of the viewer, the use of sculptural elements.”

Sounds, virtual reality and created environment will also accompany the installed video pieces, in varying degrees.

why you should go In India, a woman and her son are barred from going beyond the walls of their home by her businessman husband. She invents a way to share existing tales and make up new stories with her son by making quasi-ceramic toy figures and settings, using whatever she can gather from around the home. When her work is “discovered,” an expansive collection of folk-art depicting rural Indian tradition and storytelling is revealed. That’s just part of the compelling backstory of Indian folk artist Sonabai Rajawar, whose work is on exhibit at Otterbein University.

This little-known, rarely performed work is based on a novel by Victorian-era English writer Charles Dickens. It chronicles the transformation of a cold-hearted and wretched miser into a cheerful and generous man of the people after being visited by three spirits in dreams on Christmas Eve night that show him the error of his ways. Its messages of hope, goodwill, friendship and redemption, not to mention its holiday setting, make the heartwarming story an ideal Christmastime tale. An exhibition of the functional ceramic art of Japanese artist Masayuki Miyajima closes Thursday, Dec. 15, at the Dublin Arts Council. Miyajima, a former apprentice to Shimaoka Tatsuzo (designated a “Living National Treasure” by the Japanese government), has made elegant carved and thrown stoneware and porcelain objects for more than 20 years. He has had solo exhibitions in Dublin previously, in 2010 and 2013. Miyajima’s visit to Dublin is a part of an established cultural exchange between Dublin and Mashiko, Japan.

Kojo Kamau, the Columbus photographer whose work documented the African-American community in central Ohio and who photographed generations of notable African-Americans, including President Barack Obama, has died at age 77.

Kamau’s work is included in most significant collections in Columbus, including the Columbus Metropolitan Library and the Columbus Museum of Art. His work is prominently featured in the Long Street Cultural Wall that connects Downtown with the King-Lincoln District on the near East Side.

His work has been exhibited around the world, and he is the winner of numerous awards, including the Ohioana Library Career Award and the Raymond J. Hanley Fellowship Award.

Columbus artist Queen Brooks said Kamau was a “quiet, gentle man” with a “wonderful spirit.”

Brooks recalled Kamau’s Downtown Columbus studio as the place where she, and many other African-American artists, not only created community but were encouraged to pursue their own art.

“I was recovering from a bad accident, and I hadn’t been going out. I decided I needed to go out, and I had seen an article in The Columbus Dispatch about his studio, and that he’d

been to Africa. I didn’t know artists or anything about art. I was maybe 36 [or] 37 at the time,” she said. “I would walk over and look in the windows. On maybe the third day he came out and invited me in. I would go over every day and just sit and talk. Finally, he said I could work for him. That’s how I got my start. I had my first exhibit there.”

“For more than 50 years, Kojo Kamau’s talented photographic eye provided us a unique glimpse of Columbus neighborhoods and people, celebrities and his many travels around world,” said Tom Katzenmeyer, president and CEO of the Greater Columbus Arts Council. “We are deeply saddened to hear that Columbus has lost another extraordinary member of its arts family.”

In an interview with Alive almost a year ago to the date, Kamau said, “I have always been self-motivated, and I have always been looking to see what’s going on around me.” He said that, while he did not initially consider what he was doing to be of significance to the community at large, he ultimately embraced his role as a historian.

Kamau’s work is currently the featured exhibition at the National AfroAmerican Museum & Cultural Center in Wilberforce, Ohio. The retrospective, “Kojo: Eyewitness to History,” continues through May.

Maybe I’m spoiled this time of year as a critic, or maybe beauty is just in the eye of the beholder.

But amid all the year-end Oscar bait, “Collateral Beauty” stands out, and not in a good way. Boasting a cast with a combined 18 Oscar nominations and a coveted December (aka prime award contender season) release, I expected more than a 94-minute eye roll.

Howard (Will Smith) is a New York advertising executive whose life is in a tailspin after he’s struck by a personal tragedy. He passes time at work in a haze, barely speaking to coworkers while building elaborate domino setups in the office for some reason.

The other partners in his firm (Edward Norton, Kate Winslet, Michael Peña) are concerned that Howard’s check-out is affecting business, and he’s the lone holdout on a large offer to buy the firm.

A chance meeting with Amy (Keira Knightley), an actress auditioning for a commercial at the firm, leads to two more actors (Helen Mirren, Jacob Latimore) and a truly bizarre plan.

In his grief, Howard has written letters to the concepts of Love, Time and Death. Howard’s partners decide the trio

of actors should play personifications of this trio in a bizarre kind of Christmas Carol twist.

Obviously, “Beauty” boasts a casts worthy of attention. What’s less obvious is how they landed this cast with a sappy, half-baked script and a sentiment that tries to be deep but comes off like a Hallmark Channel movie.

Director David Frankel (“The Devil Wears Prada,” “Marley & Me”) is working from a script that strains logic and contains more side plots and loose ends than one would expect in such a short running time. Not that I wanted this movie to be any longer.

That all-star cast is game for whatever, including a fair amount of comedic moments that cut against the melodrama. Smith spends most of the film brooding, and it’s hard to see Helen Mirren go to waste.

Then there’s a concluding reveal that is meant to be deep and left me literally muttering profanities under my breath.

Perhaps this is best thought of as agreeable adult fluff for families trying to pick a holiday movie. Against the far better offerings currently in theaters (see “Manchester by the Sea”), it’s hard to see much beauty here.

but must they all? Who are the real cupcakes? Do you need a safe space?

I’ve found that even some of my colleagues in film criticism have trouble empathizing with a female lead character.

Or an LGBTQ character.

Or one of color. You do realize that most of these audiences are asked to do this with pretty much every movie?

One review of “Rogue One” has a critique that it lacks a strong male lead to counter its female lead.

The reverse of that is true of the vast majority of movies, and we’re talking about a group that is half of the human population.

So if you’re spending the weekend boycotting the new “Star Wars” flick, good on you. I suspect it will be about as successful as the boycott of the musical “Hamilton” when the weekend box office comes out. And I’ll enjoy “Rogue One” a little bit more knowing you won’t be there.

And if seeing Nazi overtones in a villain evokes an anti-Trump message, one might want to reflect on why they think that particular shoe fits.

Prior to this, “Rogue One” was lamented on the right as feminist propaganda for daring to once again have a strong female lead (Felicity Jones). It was also blasted for its ethnically diverse cast. “The Force Awakens” faced similar backlash for its lead and, gasp, a black Stormtrooper?!

We could go on, from the furor over “Mad Max: Fury Road” among men who showed up for the car crashes and felt bait-and-switched into a subversively feminist message to the fanboy hissy fit over the female-led reboot of “Ghostbusters.”

So I have this to say to some of my fellow white male moviegoers: Why are you such thinskinned crybabies? Most movies cater to you as the primary audience,

“Rogue One,” the first in a series of standalone films set in the “Star Wars” universe, hits theaters everywhere this week. I’m sad to report that I haven’t seen it (as it was not screened in advance for Columbus critics). I’m happy to report that I will see it, and with great excitement.

So instead, I’ll discuss the movement to boycott the movie that’s spread among alt-right types under the #DumpStarWars hashtag. To be clear, this isn’t so much of a movement as it is a momentary Twitter trend, but in light of our recent election results, it warrants discussion.

Fueled by some tweets from “Rogue One” screenwriters drawing parallels between the villains of “Star Wars” and modern white-nationalist politics, the boycott effort spread based on some (act surprised) fake reports that the film’s ending was re-shot to include anti-Trump scenes.

Let’s stop for a moment to consider that “Star Wars” has longestablished Nazi overtones for its baddies.

Darth Vader’s headgear was inspired by helmets worn by Nazi soldiers.

The foot soldiers of the Empire are called Stormtroopers. This isn’t exactly subtle.

y brain and pulse were racing in time to the rave music playing. The stylized lighting and colorful, abstract decorations in my periphery took on an exaggerated presence. Just when I felt I might be losing control, the music began to slur and slow and then it stopped.

No, I wasn’t inebriated or at a dance club or any more deranged than I usually am. I was eating food so wildly spicy that it instigated a mind-bending experience until, like a spell suddenly breaking, the portable digital music system throbbing with Pakistani hiphop and Bollywood-influenced techno tunes crashed inside of Tandoori Grill.

Surveying the room with renewed interest, I realized that the place’s propulsive soundtrack and fashionable, modern design belied an otherwise mom-and-pop atmosphere.

Serving about four years in the Bethel Road strip mall called Olentangy Shopping Center, Tandoori Grill is the snazzier arm of Apna Bazaar, the little Pakistani market and counter eatery to which it’s attached. If Tandoori Grill still flies under your Indian food radar, I suggest you readjust your restaurant altimeter.

Moving on to more esoteric fare, Tandoori Grill’s humongous Haleem Chicken ($14) is a standout stew that’s fiery yet nuanced. The dense blend of lentils, barley, wheat and shredded chicken is slow-cooked until everything breaks down into a mass with the consistency of thick refried beans enriched with loads of ghee, a type of clarified butter. Although an earthy, heavy dish, its curry-style seasoning features leavening high notes that can be amplified by side garnishes of crispy fried onions, lemon, cilantro and diced jalapeno.

Wok-cooked Karhai — I got mine with good-quality shrimp ($12) — is another outstanding dish rarely seen around town. Fresh tomatoes, tomato paste, garlic, ginger, chilies, plenty of ghee and a brilliant battery of herbs and spices create a tangy and incendiary sauce-broth with layers of flavor.

This is the blazing hot, complex curry I was eating when the music stopped — so be forewarned that it has the potential to blur “bon appetit” into “bon voyage.” But if you enjoy hurtsso-good botanical heat like me, it’s a delicious vehicle for an endorphinfueled mini-vacation you can take while simply sitting at a table.

Not all of the place’s inexpensive and delicious northern Indian and Pakistani fare is intense. For instance, the three-bite Potato Samosa ($1.15) is a pleasant-but-simple pastry filled with curried mashed potatoes. If you prefer meat and a punchier filling, pick the Chicken Samosa ($1.25). Both come with thin house raita that tastes like yogurt blended with mixed Indian pickle, and both could’ve been crisper and less oily.

For a more interesting appetizer, try Tandoori Grill’s hefty version of Bun Kabab ($5). It’s a Pakistan-derived hybrid of an American hamburger and chaat — dynamically garnished subcontinent street food — that’s uncommon, spicy and irresistible. I just wish mine had been warmer and presented before my entrée arrived.

Ordering the Family Platter ($22), which feeds about three hungry people, is an economic way to sample multiple courses. Crispy naan, a small salad plus fluffy basmati rice fragrant with clove, cinnamon and black peppercorn accompany three chosen kebabs — all guaranteed to be expertly seared.

My terrific meat trio: mildly spicy and gingery boneless tandoori chicken with a tenderness and juiciness that indicated an extended, yogurt-based marinade; tangier, spicier and cumin-kissed reshmi chicken tikka; and, my favorite, fantastic, chili-flecked, cinnamon-scented ground lamb seekh kebab.

When Chris and Mike Beck took over Bob’s Bar in 2001, the establishment was already a north Clintonville mainstay, so they knew they couldn’t tamper with the name.

“Nobody’s coming to ‘Chris’ Bar’ [and] nobody’s coming to ‘Mike’s Bar,’” Chris Beck said.

The original owner, Robert Morris, opened and operated the bar in 1978 until he became ill. “[Bob] forgot to renew his liquor license and he wasn’t paying his sales taxes, so they closed,” said Beck, who was a loyal customer of the bar, which opened around dawn, presumably to serve third-shift workers. “We paid the taxes, renewed their liquor license and then got the keys and came in … and said, ‘What the hell have we just done?’”

“There were coats on chairs [and] there was money on the bar,” he continued. “It was like

they expected to open at 6 a.m. the next day except they had been closed a year.”

The Beck brothers remodeled the space. They kept the shape of the 56-foot-long bar but installed wood in place of the padded railing. “Pieces of that … were cut up and put onto plaques and given out to regulars,” said General Manager Rich Good.

They also added a sink, as the bar previously only had one.

“I don’t know what they did for washing glasses [and I] don’t want to know,” Beck said.

Jim Beatty, one of the Becks’ first managers, led the charge in upgrading the bar’s beer selection, which was somewhat limited.

“When we bought Bob’s they had three taps,” Beck said. “It was Busch, Busch and Busch.”

“I know when I started here nine years ago, [Beatty]’s quote was, ‘No domestics on tap, no pitchers and no NASCAR on the TV,’” Good said.

“We just started realizing that people really do like different kinds of craft beers, and nobody was doing it yet,” Beck said. “So we just kept getting better beers and rare beers.”

Those rare beers are especially prominent during the bar’s Extravaganza event each February.

Among other offerings, patrons can expect cask-conditioned beers like Columbus Brewing Co.’s Bodhi mixed with fruit flavors like pineapple and mango. “We work really hard to really make that the best tap list in the city each year,” Good said.

Bob’s Bar’s status as one of the “best sports bars in America” has required significantly less effort; Maxim magazine unexpectedly bestowed the honor upon the bar in 2011. “[It] kinda cracks us up ’cause we’re like, ‘We’re a beer bar; we’re not a sports bar,’” Beck said.

But Bob’s Bar does claim to be “the cultural hub of the Midwest.”

“We’re just a melting pot of the Midwest,” Beck said. “You could be the CEO of a brewery or you could be a construction worker and it doesn’t matter; everybody’s welcome. … That’s what it means to me.”
