on the cover On Dec. 10 at the Bluestone, Joe Peppercorn and two dozen local musicians will perform the Beatles’ entire catalog — 215 songs in all — in chronological order, plus selected tracks from the band members’ post-Beatles solo careers.

The Beatles Marathon is arguably the most ambitious musical feat attempted in Columbus each year, and it has also become a beloved community event. For Peppercorn, who’s now known more for this show than for his band the Whiles, the event isn’t some excuse to play a bunch of covers and make some money. It’s an essential, sacred part of his life.

You can’t talk Festivus (this weekend at 400 W. Rich, see the Arts section) without talking about “Feats of Strength,” “Airing of Grievances,” and the aluminum pole. And you can’t talk those things without talking “Seinfeld.”

In addition to Festivus (actually an invention of writer Daniel O’Keefe in the 1960s — O’Keefe’s son, Dan, was a writer for “Seinfeld”), the ’90s sitcom introduced a unique lexicon into the popular culture. Consider this a definitive list of the top nine (one for each season) secondary characters that helped make it happen.

Perhaps the most grounded character on the show, Helen is not without idiosyncrasies. Her absolute refusal to put Jerry at inconvenience was comic brilliance in its mom-ness. Actress Liz Sheridan’s Helen is the only secondary character to appear in all nine seasons.

George’s mom was probably the sweetest lady in the neighborhood while George was growing up, although George does claim that she’s never smiled, so maybe Estelle has always been … off.

6. UnCle leo This character changed a bit through the seasons, his eccentricities, if possible, amplified.

This eager but annoying and inept comedian only gets laughs when he borrows Jerry’s material. Jerry at one point calls him a “timeslot hit,” a play on the success of shows NBC aired after “Seinfeld.”

Elaine’s boss at the J. Peterman Catalog, his speech apes that of the overly colorful language used to promote the products in his publication. He lives his life in much the same, outsized manner (maybe).

You know that Larry David voiced “Big Stein,” but the boss was played by actor Lee Bear, whose top non-Seinfeld credit is as “Cutter’s bodyguard” in 1994’s “Clear and Present Danger.”

There has to be room on this list for the inventor of the beltless trenchcoat (aka The Executive) and the past president of the Pines of Mar Gables.

2. dAvid pUddy No one can repair a car or move a bureau like Puddy. Am I putting this die-hard New Jersey Devils fan at No. 2 on this list? “All signs point to yes!”

1. FrAnK CostAnzA It’s impossible to overrate Jerry Stiller’s work here. His character drove so many of the show’s zanier, over-the-top moments, from “Serenity now!” to the manziere to, of course, “Festivus for the rest of us!”

honorABle mention: BoB sACAmAno Kramer’s friend never actually appears on the show, but from his myriad medical conditions to his capitalistic ventures, Sacamano opened the door for so much good Kramer.

hen Somali-born Ohio State University student Abdul Razak Ali Artan drove his car into an on-campus crowd and started attacking pedestrians with a butcher knife, injuring 13 people before being shot and killed by campus police, the shockwaves reverberated far from the scene of the crime.

In the days following the late-November attack, members of immigrant

and Muslim communities braced for backlash. In an interview with NPR, OSU senior Mohamed Farah, who is a Somali refugee and Muslim, said, “When I first heard that he was Somali … my stomach did fall. Not just because of what happened today, but because of what will happen tomorrow.”

“When something like that happens you just want to stay in bed,” said A.B. Hassan, 28, owner of Hoyo’s Kitchen, a fast-casual Somali eatery tucked away in a North Side plaza off Cleveland

Avenue that could double as a culinary U.N., flanked by Brazilian and Italian restaurants, an Irish pub and a fastfood pizzeria with a name that alludes to ancient Rome. “Last week was terrible. I’m trying to forget about it, and you can’t. It’s so depressing.”

Hoyo’s and Hassan were both drawn hesitantly into the spotlight the morning after the attack when Stonewall Columbus hosted a lunch at the restaurant as a means of showing support for the Columbus Somali community, which

numbers about 50,000 immigrants, making it the second-largest population from the East African nation in the U.S. “We work with a lot of refugees, and once you know their stories and understand what they went through, to potentially face some kind of backlash, we didn’t want that to happen,” said Lori Gum, program and Pride coordinator for Stonewall. “Our job is to take care of the marginalized. ... We have a voice, and we can say … that now more than ever, this is going to be a welcoming city.”

not ashamed of that, and I don’t think we have to give equal time,” said Gum, noting Stonewall Executive Director Karla Rothan had reached out to university officials, as well as Columbus Chief of Police Kim Jacobs. “Now, that doesn’t mean we’re not horrified. It doesn’t mean we’re not sympathetic. Of course we are.

But sometimes you have to take those positions.”

For Hassan, recent events have elicited a range of emotions, including disgust (a term he repeated on several occasions) and sorrow over the attack, as well as the unease that comes from dealing with the scrutiny that has been placed on the immigrant and Muslim communities in its aftermath. “You feel defeated,” he said. “The events that occurred, that should not reflect on the Somali community. We don’t deserve that at all.”

Ultimately, however, the outpouring bolstered his faith in his country — “It was beautiful and overwhelming and definitely reaffirmed my belief in America,” he said — as well as his desire to continue to embrace cuisine as a means of bringing together people of different cultural, religious and social backgrounds.

“We didn’t open the restaurant to cater to Somalis and focus on the Somali community, no. We wanted to open the restaurant to give an option to anyone who wanted to try something new,” he said. “Food can be the bridge that connects people.”

Initially, Gum conceived the lunch as a personal outreach, posting plans on Facebook to meet and share a meal with anyone in the community who wished to show support. From there, things snowballed, with Stonewall stepping up in an official capacity and 10TV reporter Glenn McEntyre arriving to film an on-air segment.

“Part of me was thinking, ‘Don’t do it.’

If this hits the news … everyone is going to see it, and we might be a target. Also, I don’t want to profit off of this — at all,” said Hassan, whose parents immigrated to Columbus from Somalia in the early ’80s (Hassan was born stateside and opened the restaurant in November 2014 as a means of showcasing his mother’s recipes — “Hoyo” means “mom” in Somali, and she’s one of five family members who help run the business).

“But these people took it upon themselves to show support for the Somali community, so the least I could do is partake.”

According to Gum, some in the local community expressed dissatisfaction with Stonewall’s show of support, reaching out to question if the LGBTQ organization would be offering “equal time” to survivors of the attack.

“Those victims have a multimillion-dollar university behind them.

Our whole organization is about making sure those people who don’t have all the resources behind them are protected.

City of Bexley We just moved here, and my bitter little heart has melted with the kindness of our neighbors, the teachers and the greater community at large. The city offers tremendous walkabilty, a great library, independent shops like Piccadilly, Cherbourg Bakery, the Drexel and family-friendly events all year long.

Off Color’s Dinosmores The Chicago brewer is a longtime favorite (stoked to learn it’s finally opening a Chicago brewpub), and stumbling upon its “Imperial Marshmallow Stout” is always a late-fall/early-winter treat. The beer is brewed with mini-marshmallows, graham crackers, vanilla beans and cocoa nibs, and tastes like a boozy s’more. I managed to score a couple four packs on a recent trip to Chicago, but I’ve lucked into it on tap locally, including at Yellow Brick Pizza last year, so keep an eye out.

–Andy Downing The Beatles I certainly haven’t spent as much time listening to the Beatles this week as Joe Peppercorn and the rest of the Marathon band have, but getting my own private White Album concert during a recent rehearsal served to remind me that the there’s a good reason for Beatles fandom: They wrote amazing songs. No big shock there. But the ubiquity of the Beatles means that sometimes I take the band’s genius for granted (especially as someone who grew up listening to more Brian Wilson than John Lennon). And man, did those four write some weird tunes. Go listen to the White Album; it’s more avantgarde than you remember.

In 1999, the young band dubbed itself Mrs. Children, later becoming the Whiles when it released its breakthrough album Colors of the Year in 2003. Though the band toured with bigger acts and garnered some major-label attention, the Whiles never quite busted free of the outerbelt, yet it has remained active in fits and starts, releasing a new record every few years, including Mercury Ghost in early November.

“I don’t have a regular job. I probably never will. My life is weird,” said Peppercorn, who married his wife, Juliette, in 2003. He’s the primary caregiver for the couple’s three kids while also holding down bartending gigs and working as a church organist.

Several years ago, Peppercorn hosted a weekly open-mic night at the Treehouse (now the Treebar) and became good friends with Andyman Davis, the former Treehouse co-owner and then-program director at CD101 (now CD102.5). One night, in a two-hour drinking session around the piano, he and Davis plowed through the entirety of Abbey Road.

In 2010, Davis drowned while vacationing with his family, and it hit Peppercorn hard. Soon after Davis’ death, Peppercorn was driving and listening to the Beatles’ “She Loves You” while his 1-year-old son, Giuseppe, sang “yeah, yeah, yeah” from the back of the car.

“I remember being stunned by the beauty of that moment,” Peppercorn said. “I’d let the Beatles go. They were not with me in my 20s. In high school everything was the Beatles, but in my 20s I had to reject that. Then, in that moment I was 30, and it was like, ‘Oh, my gosh. This is beautiful.’ So I said, ‘I’m going to play the White Album at the Treebar.’”

Then the idea grew. “I like to do stupid things to impress people,” he said, “so really stupidly I said, ‘You know, I’m supposed to play the White Album in two weeks. I’m gonna play every Beatles song.’”

Under the glow of multicolored Christmas lights and an Elvis-head lamp, Peppercorn performed every Beatles song on Tuesday, Dec. 28, deciding on the fly whether he’d play guitar or piano. Instruments were set up so that others among the 50 or so gathered there could join in, and they often did.

Peppercorn admitted the first year was not very good musically. There was some ego in it, too — a stunt to merely prove he could pull it off. But toward the end of the night, as he played “Because” from Abbey Road and attempted to sing it in the rasp of a voice that remained, the show became something else.

When reflecting on his tween and teen years growing up in Upper Arlington, Joe Peppercorn describes himself as “literally the biggest dork in the world.” Years removed, it’s easy to laugh about a nerdy youth, but it wasn’t easy then. In middle school, other kids bullied Peppercorn in a way that left deep scars. He struggled with insomnia. By the time he hit high school, Peppercorn didn’t believe anyone was capable of caring about him.

Then he heard two Beatles albums, Rubber Soul and Abbey Road, and everything changed. “I no longer felt so alone,” he said. “The insomnia that plagued me my whole life was OK. It was a declaration that I was OK, and I was going to be OK. I am not sure I would have survived my youth without this music. It was my escape and my safety net. Without it, I think there’s a good chance I may have taken my own life as a teenager.”

With his jazz-band classmates Paul Headley and Chris Bolognese, and later his younger brother, Matt, Peppercorn started a rock band and played “Hey Jude” at the high school talent show in 1998. When Joe was a senior, he and Matt bought the Beatles’ complete scores and attempted to learn the songs together.

“I would look at those lyrics and chord changes and dream of one day playing them all,” Joe said.

It’s Nov. 10, exactly one month from the day Peppercorn and two dozen local musicians will perform every album by the Beatles — 215 songs in all — in chronological order, plus selected tracks from the band members’ postBeatles solo careers, at the Bluestone.

On this night, Peppercorn and six of the 11 core band members — bassist Chris Bolognese, guitarists Jake Remley and Matt Peppercorn (Joe’s brother), drummer Jesse Cooper, guitarist/singer Tommy Young and multi-instrumentalist/singer Phil Cogley — are gathered in Joe’s cramped Grandview basement to play through the 30-track White Album.

A string of lights hangs from exposed floor joists in the ceiling, illuminating bookshelves and vinyl records and bins of toys. To accommodate the amps and drum kit and keyboards and seven grown men, Lego projects in various stages of completion have been relegated to one corner. Resting on a red toy piano is a silver coin stamped with a smiley face and the words, “I was caught being good!”

“You got the chunks, I got the stabs,” Remley says to Matt before the band launches into a blistering “Back in the U.S.S.R.,” after which Joe stands up from the keyboard and begins playing “Dear Prudence” on a 12-string guitar.

For the first two sides of the White Album, the band is down to business and in sync, with minimal lag between songs. Any kinks, like the quirky start-stop rhythm on “The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill,” are worked out mid-song. The extended break comes a few songs later, as the band discusses whether certain harmonies should have been “Ohh” and not “Ahh” or three parts instead of two.

More beer is consumed, and the second half of practice is a little looser, with longer breaks between songs. This is just one of multiple practices for the White Album, so the band still has some time to firm things up. But not

“There are always at least 100 people in the Bluestone who could sing the song I am singing better than me. [But] we are the island of misfit toys, and this show is our home.”

“The whole room sang it, and it was this very beautiful moment,” Peppercorn said. “I think that was the moment I realized this was something special. It wasn’t just this idiot doing this stupid human trick.”

Tommy Young of Low Men was behind the bar that night, occasionally singing into a mic (until Peppercorn kicked him off). “Watching him do that almost entirely by himself, I was in awe of Joe,” Young said.

After that first year, Peppercorn wondered if he could do it again, but better.

We Can Work it out (With a LittLe heLp from my friends) For the second iteration of the Beatles Marathon, Peppercorn enlisted the help of his Whiles bandmates and others and booked a December date at Kobo (now Spacebar), a small Old North club. About 300 people came to watch. Phil Cogley, who performs as the Saturday Giant, planned to arrive in time to hear the White Album and then leave. The Beatles’ music had never particularly grabbed him.

“I hadn’t quite made it inside yet because there was a line out the door, but I was watching through the porthole windows, and they were hitting ‘A Day

in the Life,’” Cogley said. “What they were doing was something you can only do if you’ve been playing music nonstop for six hours. It was so lockedin. You could just feel the energy and the chemistry and the determination.

It had such an amazing vibe. The room felt so alive. I was like, man, I would kill to be a part of this.”

The next year, when a musician dropped out two weeks before the show, Peppercorn invited Cogley and Young to join the ensemble. For that 2012 performance, he initially booked the Bluestone, but then backed out and returned to the smaller confines of Kobo. “I didn’t think we were ready to do it there,” he said. “[On a stage that size], it has to be theater. It has to be a show.”

By 2013, the band was ready and played to about 1,000 people at the Bluestone. By 2015, attendance had more than doubled. As the audience grew, the number of rehearsals climbed. This year, Peppercorn and his bandmates began practicing in August, and they try not to use sheet music while performing.

The months-long Marathon prep is hard on the players and their families, particularly Peppercorn’s. “I remember looking at [Juliette] after the first marathon and saying, ‘This could really be something, but it will be incredibly

difficult for you every year. Is that OK?’” Peppercorn said. “She said yes and has always been there to take care of the kids and make sure the rest of my life doesn’t fall apart.”

While Peppercorn said the show becomes less and less about him every year, he’s still the undisputed captain of the ship. “He’s always at the helm, without a doubt,” Young said of Peppercorn.

“And directly behind him is [bassist Chris Bolognese]. Chris is the engine of the ship as Joe is driving it. You couldn’t have one without the other. If there’s ever a question in rehearsal in regards to how the song goes or what we’re singing, Joe goes right to Chris.”

In concert, Peppercorn and his bandmates don’t wear mop tops or dress up like Sgt. Pepper or sing in faux British accents. It’s not a parody. The musicians try to replicate the tunes as accurately as possible — every harmony, every tambourine shake — but they also don’t deny the fact that each player brings his or her own musical personality to the show.

“You don’t see bands cover the Beatles because they’re really hard to cover,” Peppercorn said. “They do a lot of weird things. They’re hard to sing.

The George Harrison guitar parts rely on this control and this tone that very few people can do. A lot of these albums are made not to be played live.”

Mastering 215 Beatles songs is a feat unto itself, but performing them all in one night is a superhuman endeavor. The morning of the show, the musicians tune dozens of instruments, some of which won’t be played for hours. And in order to keep the crowd engaged while performing 12-plus hours of material by the biggest rock stars in history, Peppercorn plays the role of rock star, jumping, swinging his mic and venturing into the audience.

“The persona I adopt onstage is influenced by guys like Ron House, Jerry Wick and Eric Davidson,” said Peppercorn, referencing three Columbus frontmen. “When I was in high school, seeing Gaunt, New Bomb Turks and Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments was an incredibly formative experience.

While those guys probably think the Beatles show is the dorkiest thing this side of the Scioto River, I’m performing with them in mind every year.”

Even with other singers like Cogley, Young, Nate Rothacker and Carrie Ayers taking lead vocals on songs, Peppercorn inevitably loses his voice about three hours into the show, usually during A Hard Day’s Night or Beatles for Sale.

“It’s terrifying. My voice starts to go, and I have 150 more songs to play,” Peppercorn said. “I start chugging a lot of honey and I drink a little bit of whiskey, and I panic. It sucks. There’s like 1,000 people [watching and listening] and I’m just choking on this song.

And then it comes back and everything falls into place.”

At a certain point in the show, after the jitters wear off and the hours of rehearsal take hold, Marathon musicians describe an almost spiritual experience onstage.

“You sort of enter this trance where you’re not thinking as much, and you’re very emotional and very open,” Peppercorn said. “Your senses get heightened.

It’s an unbelievable feeling.”

“You’re not thinking about anything,” Cogley said. “It feels very Zen after a certain point. There’s nothing but what’s on the stage. … I’ve [run] a half-marathon, and it takes you to a similar place — that mental focus and clarity and the way the world collapses into what’s directly in front you.”

To hear the musicians talk about the Marathon experience is to understand why Peppercorn so often has to say no when someone asks to be a part of the event. “It’s a deeply personal show for me, and I just couldn’t do it with people who were not inextricably a part of my life,” he said. “They are in my basement and my kids are walking around them as they play, and that’s a huge part of why the show works.”

mately being a failure in all commercial measures in music, is heartbreaking at times.”

When less than two weeks remained until the Marathon on Dec. 10, Peppercorn said he was running a fever and having a recurring nightmare in which he wakes up at 3 p.m. the day of the performance and has to play the entire show in half the time.

“This show really shouldn’t be possible, and in certain ways, it’s not. I still feel like we — and especially I — have never performed all the songs in a way I was entirely proud of,” Peppercorn said. “But I get into the room that day with a bunch of friends, most of whom

I’ve known and played music with for 20 years, and I look around and everyone is smiling, and I’m playing these songs that are just an absolute blast to play, and I feel at home. I feel comfortable in my own skin for one of the very few times in my life.”

Back in Peppercorn’s basement, 3-year-old Cecilia wanders downstairs in the middle of rehearsal.

“Daddy, can I have a treat?” she asks in an impossibly cute Cindy Lou Who voice.

“Did you finish your dinner?” Peppercorn responds.

“What dinner?”

“Pasta?”

“No.” “Can you finish it?”

“Sure!”

This scene is repeated two more times as Cecilia becomes less and less enthused about finishing her pasta. In the back corner, Giuseppe and his other sister, Olivia, wear orange protective earmuffs and yell over the din while a Lego drama unfolds between them.

The kids seem perfectly accustomed to the rehearsals. They know life doesn’t stop for the Beatles. Peppercorn still plays organ gigs and bartends at Giuseppe’s Ritrovo in Bexley and Little Rock Bar in Italian Village. But in the middle of all that, it’s Beatles, Beatles, Beatles.

“Every year, I’m reminded leading up to the show just how immersive I have to become,” Peppercorn said. “All I listen to is the Beatles. Even when there is other music playing, I hear the Beatles.

When I’m playing with my kids, I am visualizing the show. When I’m on my phone, I am messaging about practice or last-minute changes to a song.”

As fun as the rehearsals often are, Peppercorn said the last few weeks leading up to the show are hellish — full of nerves, fear, self-doubt and regret. “It becomes an intense mental battle for me,” he said. “Thinking constantly of the band that was most successful at music, which is what I wanted to do with my life, while ulti-

Every year, Peppercorn tries to incorporate new elements into the show. This year, Samantha Schnabel, a violinist and singer in Ghost Shirt who has played in four Beatles Marathons, is bringing three of her orchestra students from Granville High School to form a string quartet on a trio of songs.

For Schnabel, the Beatles gig is forever linked to one of the biggest moments of her life. In November of last year, she went into labor with her first child, and while she and her husband waited, they listened to Abbey Road.

When their daughter arrived, they named her Lennon. Less than two months later, Schnabel performed onstage in the Beatles Marathon.

“I’ve been a musician pretty much my entire life, and the Marathon is my absolute favorite stage,” Schnabel said. “Last year when Joe sang ‘Blackbird,’ I stood backstage with tears streaming down my face as I listened to the crowd join him.

It was just so perfect.”

Jesse Cooper, who plays in the Receiver and shares drummer duties with the Whiles’ Paul Headley, said the Beatles Marathon is what keeps him in Columbus. “I remember being on tour with the Receiver this past summer and would catch myself daydreaming of possibly relocating to another part of the country,” Cooper said. “The only red flag in that pleasant dream was the thought of not being a part of the Beatles Marathon. …

There’s nothing like it on the planet.”

A strange thing happens, too, after playing in the Beatles Marathon: These songs that were recorded in the ’60s by an English rock group and are beloved by millions of people become something else entirely.

“At some point, so many of these songs don’t even feel like Beatles songs anymore,” Cogley said. “They feel like our songs.”

“When I hear somebody else playing Beatles music or I walk into a place and they’re playing Beatles music, I almost feel like, ‘Yeah, that’s mine,’” Young said. “If a person says, ‘You like the Beatles?’ I’m like, ‘You don’t even know.

I am the Beatles.’ ... We’ve played the songs so much that it feels like it’s our band, and the rest of the year, when we’re not doing these songs, it feels like something is missing.”

In October, Aaron Troyer played Carabar with his backing band the Destroyers. Now he’s set to release a new solo album, Faith in the Unknown (Superdreamer Records), alongside the same players, now dubbed the Voyeurs. At future shows the collective might emerge as the Lawyers. Or the Employers.

The ever-shifting name reflects the loose, freewheeling feel the musicians bring to the stage (as well as the relative ease of rhyming words with “Troyer”).

“Especially in my live bands, I don’t spend too much time worrying about the details,” said Troyer, who visits Used Kids Records for a record release show on Monday, Dec. 12.

All of the songs on Faith in the Unknown — the second 2016 solo album from the Day Creeper frontman following January’s Swift & True — were penned during Troyer’s first summer off as a public school teacher, a three-month stretch where he spent countless hours holed up in a sunless basement either recording or making artwork. “Basically, the culminating products at the end of the summer were the [October] art show at Jewelweed [Floral Studio] and an album,” Troyer said.

While Troyer tends to labor over his artwork — abstract watercolor collages that require inten-

sive focus — the music always comes a bit more naturally, whether he’s bashing his way through garage-rock nuggets like “Feel” or building celestial keyboard-andvoice numbers like “Faith in the Unknown,” where the musician delivers his words atop synthesizer that sounds like a star being born.

Lyrically, however, the songs remain tethered to terra firma, with Troyer navigating everything from loneliness (a likely byproduct of all those solitary basement hours) to “Jury Duty,” a playful cut informed by the musician’s experiences traversing legal bureaucracy.

Troyer, 34, has been recording ceaselessly since he was 16 years old, and he still employs many of the same techniques he did as a teenager, recording to eight-track tape and eschewing digital technology, in part, to limit his options.

“With digital, if I wanted to record 164 tracks, I could do that, and I would never finish it,” he said, and laughed.

“With an eight-track, if you record with a live band, that’s four tracks

right there, so you can only do four tracks of overdub. I could do seven or eight guitar parts digitally, but I have to do one here, and I have to make it sound good. There’s more immediacy to it.”

Following this brief solo foray, Troyer plans to regroup with Day Creeper, which is currently on hiatus while Dan Ross crisscrosses Europe as a stand-in touring member for DTCV. “We have breaks and we won’t play for months sometimes, and that way when we do get back [to Day Creeper] we’re excited and we like each other. We’re not fighting or bitter,” Troyer said, noting the band has a new album completed and coming early in 2017. “Doing something new is always rewarding in that way.

It doesn’t feel like it’s been churned over and over again.”

But the biggest turning point in Joseph’s evolution might’ve arrived in a phone call Natalie shared with friend and songwriting mentor Andrew Stonestreet, who critiqued an early batch of demos as lacking in emotional connection.

“He called me and said, ‘Every song is you standing up above me telling me how I’m going to be OK … as this very deified thing,’” Natalie said.

Following the conversation, Natalie started reflecting on a romantic relationship that had ended that morning, wondering if it was ever possible to truly know someone.

“I was thinking, ‘Can’t get close enough to get close to you,’ and [‘Canyon’] just poured out in the car,” she said. “Instead of asking, ’What do I think people want to hear?’ it was, ‘What do I feel in my body? What should I say about that?’”

diverse than the trio’s folksy 2014 debut Native Dreamer Kin, incorporating more grandiose, rock-oriented moments like “Canyon,” which suggests early Fleetwood Mac. “We talked a lot about having a broad dynamic range,” Natalie said, attributing the evolution in part to producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley).

“My favorite part of music is the heart-stopping volume moments where everything blows through the ceiling up against those hushed, gripping moments of softness.”

The trio’s harmonies are still central to its sound, though they’re employed in new, inventive ways. On “Honest,” Meegan and Ally operate as the dueling angel and devil perched on the shoulder (“I’m alone”/“No you’re not”), while “Whirlwind” finds the three attempting to recreate the titular windstorm with little more than their voices.

“That was our hallmark from the beginning, being [able to carry a song] with just three voices and a guitar, and we didn’t want to compromise that for bigger production,” Natalie said.

I’m Alone, No You’re Not, the sophomore longplayer from Portland, Oregon, sister trio Joseph, lives up to its polarized title, swinging between songs like “SOS (Overboard),” where the narrator holds a paramour at arm’s length (“I want you close but my arms are holding you back”), and “I Don’t Mind,” where the central figure tears down walls and brushes aside demons, convinced “nothing can keep us apart.”

“There is a lot of push and pull and a lot of tension and a lot of dark [and] light dynamics we were working through,” said Natalie Closner, who joins sisters Allison and Meegan in concert at Newport Music Hall on Thursday, Dec. 8. “These are very specific stories about what it was like to start making music together, and working through how that affects relationships and your sense of peace and your sturdiness when you’re constantly moving everywhere and you’re distant from your people.”

It’s a distance that bleeds into songs like “Planets,” a sparse, pulsating number where the trio envisions itself as “a comet flying through the stars,” and the lilting, hymn-like “More Alive than Dead,” where the musicians attempt to find some separation from the past.

Franklinton Friday presents a Festivus For the rest oF us

Early reports indicate there might — just might — be an aluminum pole as part of this year’s Festivus festivities. In any case, this year’s bigger and badder event will feature about twice the number of local vendors as past years (trust me, a full list would be a great way to fill column inches), not to mention live music and, of course, food trucks.

“This is just going to be a much bigger version of what we’ve done in the past,” said Festivus coordinator and 400 W. Rich tenant Austi Welsh of Quirky Clean. “There are a couple of other holiday shows that same weekend, and we didn’t want people to have to choose to not go to one or another.”

hat could be better than Festivus at 400 W. Rich in Franklinton? How about three days of Festivus? It’s a Festivus miracle! (Tell me you didn’t see that coming.)

Anyway, yep, the warehouse art/ business space is expanding its annual December event to a full weekend this year, opening during Franklinton Friday and continuing on Saturday and Sunday. And that’s just part of what’s in store this weekend in Franklinton.

Here’s a primer on Festivus and the rest of it to get your visit started.

Participating vendors include tenants at 400 W. Rich, as well as other local makers of handmade and craft items of all kinds.

“It has a laid-back feel, but people will still get to see some beautiful pieces of fine art and also the best of what Columbus has to offer in local, handmade items,” Welsh said.

400 W. Rich will also have its typical Franklinton Fridays fun, with lots of open studios and exhibitions in its two upstairs galleries, this month from Mat Marrash and W. Ralph Walters.

In addition, the space will feature its annual C-Note show, a full gallery of works made by resident artists priced at $100 or less.

This exhibition of small pieces is an Ohio Art League tradition (albeit not a continuous one) dating back to 1916.

Kali Zermeno and Jordin Caudill share a studio space at Millworks Art Studios on the East Side. The CCAD graduates share a common history as well, both having grown up in the Apple Valley Resort community in Knox County, Ohio.

All of those pieces of commonality helped shape their current two-woman show at Milo-Grogan’s Corrugate Studio Collective & Gallery.

“Kali and I both grew up in the same small lake community known as Apple Valley. We spent summers on boats, going to the beach and to cookouts, and hanging out with friends. But the larger community we were living in was very much a community of blue-collar manufacturers,” Caudill said. “There’s this point in time in both our lives that we’ve been able to draw inspiration from to comment on this contrast between the laboring individual and the life of leisure they strive to possess.”

The show is titled “Sutton”; Sutton Beach is one of three beaches on the lake at Apple Valley.

“I believe we both set out to make these new bodies of work for this show specifically, but the theme of the show didn’t come until later,” Caudill said. “We both had some pieces in process when we started discussing what our similarities and differences in the work were, and out of that came labor and leisure.”

“We realized we were each similarly using certain textures and materials

with the same mental approach, and this, along with our parallel viewpoints on labor [and] leisure, was the fuel for each body of work,” Zermeno said.

“We knew we wanted to display these conversations in one place.”

The installation is experimental and industrial. The experiments often involved both artists in-studio, with concepts evolving via an active critique process. Both artists opted for construction-type materials.

“I knew that I wanted the work to be sculptural and tactile,” Caudill said.

“All of [my] works in the show are made from insulation foam and coated in popcorn ceiling texture and aqua resin — very industrial materials, but also home DIY materials at the same time.” “[My] focus remained on the bluecollar industry and the psychological reasoning for ‘a vacation’ — the normative relationship between reward and labor,” Zermeno said. “Concrete, wood, plaster [and] ‘hazard or work’related colors all signal caution or warnings in a work-related context.

I wanted to pull them out of this sphere and into the realm of what you aim to achieve after the hard work is over.”

‘Manchester by the sea’ brings eMotion in waves

Kenneth Lonergan has directed just three films, so any new release by him is cause for celebration. It just so happens that “Manchester by the Sea” is also his best work to date.

In his 2000 debut, “You Can Count on Me,” Lonergan wove a story about a single mother and her estranged brother into something deeply human, moving and funny. He also got a career-defining performance from Laura Linney and introduced the world to the acting talents of Mark Ruffalo.

Lonergan went bold with his sophomore film, the sweeping “Margaret,” which he wrote in 2003 and filmed in 2005 before it was shelved by the studio for six years, finally surfacing in 2011. With a running time that pushed three hours, it showcased some of Lonergan’s best instincts, if sometimes feeling a bit excessive.

“Manchester” is his first film since, and somehow the years have only increased Lonergan’s touch for finding simple human stories that mix warmness and melancholy without feeling contrived.

Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) works as a handyman at an apartment complex in Boston. He lives a simple and solitary life, although his calm, hardworking demeanor masks some inner turmoil.

The death of his older brother, Joe (Kyle Chandler), brings Lee reluctantly back to the fishing town he grew up in. His plan to take care of funeral arrangements and return to his normal life takes a twist when he learns Joe has left Lee the custody of his teenage son (Lucas Hedges).

The bonds they formed earlier in life are strained as the two navigate the prospect of their changing lives, as well as confronting their pasts.

Lonergan unveils his story like a masterful novelist, dangling some information out of our reach until it’s needed. The moments of impact arrive without a sweeping score. They feel the way they do in life, when a moment changes you seemingly forever.

His amazing knack for story is also met with an ability to bring the best out of his cast. Casey Affleck, who had previously proved to be the more talented actor in the family, gives his best performance to date. It’s easier for an actor to depict the crescendo of dormant emotion, but Affleck also portrays the quiet swallowing of feelings.

He’s matched with a superb performance by the young Lucas Hedges, who delivers a more thoughtful variation of teenage angst.

There’s warmth and a relief of humor to balance the weight, making “Manchester” not just an emotional punch, but a deeply entertaining one.

It’s one of the year’s best films.

“Tony and Susan,” Ford’s juxtaposition of the novel’s pulpy rural setting and Susan’s bourgeoisie life feels very red state/ blue state in the moment. It can be jarring, and parts of this film won’t work for everyone.

But there’s also a cleverly unfolding story here surrounding Susan and Tony’s past that adds to the tension.

Adams anchors the real-world setting, and it’s good that such a fine actress is in a role that requires a fair number of scenes that are just her reading and reacting. But it’s in the world of the novel where the real acting fireworks take place.

Gyllenhaal works a range of emotions — in both characters — but things really kick into another level with the appearance of Michael Shannon as a hard-nosed

Texas police investigator.

Of course the role is in Shannon’s wheelhouse, but that’s the point.

The novel’s narrative involves a few leaps of good faith and strained believability, but it’s interesting as it parallels with Adams’ character. (In a cheeky casting move, the wife in the novel storyline is portrayed by Adams’ Hollywood doppelganger, Isla Fisher.)

Ford sometimes edges into David Lynchian weirdness, and some may find “Nocturnal Animals” to be a bit of a hot mess. Regardless, it’s one well worth watching.

It’s been six years since fashion designer Tom Ford directed his first feature film, “A Single Man,” the quietly devastating portrait of a closeted gay professor dealing with the death of his longtime partner in 1960s Los Angeles.

For his second film, “Nocturnal Animals,” Ford intertwines narratives in layered tales with layered meanings. It’s messy at times, and sure to be divisive, but again there’s an unexpected artistry in Ford’s writing and directing skills.

Susan Morrow (Amy Adams) is a New York art gallery owner — an occupation set up in what could only be described as a memorable opening credit sequence. One day, an unexpected package arrives at her fancy apartment containing a proof of an upcoming novel by her ex-husband Tony (Jake Gyllenhaal).

The novel is called “Nocturnal Animals,” and the onscreen narrative soon splits between Susan’s present life, her past with Tony and the recreation of the narrative of the novel.

The novel presents a twisting and violent tale about a husband (also played by Gyllenhaal) and his family who have an encounter on an isolated Texas highway that turns sinister.

While audiences haven’t exactly flocked to the mean-spirited (and inferior) “Bad Santa 2,” this weekend brings another chance to deck the halls with boughs of raunchy.

The ensemble comedy “Office Christmas Party” takes the familiar and often stale workplace party and turns it into a full-blown bacchanal. Oddly, the movie is never quite as wild.

Jason Bateman plays a mid-level executive at a Chicago technology firm. His boss, Clay, is a wellmeaning manchild (T.J. Miller of “Silicon Valley”) who is facing pressure about his underperforming branch from his uptight CEO sister (Jennifer Aniston).

Threatened with potential layoffs, Clay doubles down on a wild drunken office party in an effort to woo a client. Hilarity ensues.

Co-directors Josh Gordon and Will Speck (“Blades of Glory”) have a lot of funny people to work with up and down the cast. Standouts include Kate McKinnon (duh) as a busybody HR director and a scene-stealing Jillian Bell.

Some of the workplace familiarity makes this a fun fantasy world. I mean, who doesn’t want to get coked up and naked at the office party, right? And the night inevitably leads to increasing shenanigans and destruction.

The only problem here is that the laughs just aren’t as prevalent as a zany comedy requires. It’s a steady stream of chuckles, thanks to the hard work of the cast more than the writing. And it never really takes off into full-blown roars of laughter.

The cast is generally likable, so it’s a passable comedy if that’s your itch. But you might want to hit the spiked nog a little before you go.

he more things change, the more they stay the same” applies uncannily well to the site of a decades-long succession of disparate-yet-vegetarian-friendly restaurants: 247 W. King Avenue.

Going back to the 1980s, that’s where you found the groovy King Avenue Coffeehouse, a counterculture hot spot that eventually gave way to arty Dragonfly Neo-V — the “V” was for vegan — which segued into a

renowned biodynamic establishment called Till Dynamic Fare.

To these, add the second Angry Baker Cafe and Bakery, open since September.

Fans of the original, scratch-cooking Angry Baker in Olde Towne East will find more of the same at this Victorian Village-area sequel. That means whimsical art, reclaimed wooden fixtures and mostly OK service in a hip and bustling, mid-priced, casual operation that caters to varied palates and diets.

But the King Avenue location brings new and improved changes, too. These include dinner service with a just-released menu featuring salmon and pea fritters, vegan meatloaf and lamb chops with pumpkin polenta; adult beverages; and a far roomier space than its cramped sibling.

You can take advantage of the enhanced drink menu with about a half-dozen draft beers ($5 each),

a decent little wine selection (glasses are $7-$9) or with the lovely and inspired Ohio Apple Cider Mimosa ($6) made with Spanish Cava.

That mimosa is a marvelous match for a Pumpkin Oat Pancake ($2.75 a la carte). It’s vegan and gluten-free — so not as springy as the usual thing — but you needn’t be on a special diet to like this hearty, healthy and compelling dark flapjack with an oatflecked, granola-type topping.

as-a-bisque bowl of “creamy” roasted squash with a livening hint of curry. A mammoth side of redskin potato-wedge Home Fries ($2.50) was fine if a bit oily.

The Vegan Reuben ($10.50 with soup or salad) isn’t going to fool enthusiasts of the genuine corned beef article, but it’s still a pleasant sandwich — and it won’t raise your cholesterol level. Killer house rye toast is filled with crisp strips of bacon-like homemade seitan garnished with Daiya brand “mozzarella,” assertive sauerkraut and vegan-but-richtasting Russian dressing the color of scrambled eggs.

The relationship between Angry Baker’s Thai Noodle Salad ($11.50) and Thai cuisine is faint at best. But, with its array of healthful, colorful and flavorful warm vegetables and its exemplary tofu treatment — marinated and crisp — I’ll gladly order this big and winning ensemble again. My dining partner described it nicely by saying, “It’s like a better version of something I used to get at the old King Avenue Coffeehouse.”

The cinnamon-scented French Toast Sandwich ($9.75), served with maple syrup, gets another thumbs up. A lighter-side spin on the croque monsieur, it stars puffy and excellent homemade brioche bread that is gently fortified with egg, pan fried and dusted with powdered sugar. Inside the sweetand-savory package are thick slices of deli ham and melted Swiss cheese.

Good ingredients go into the Grits Breakfast Bowl ($10.25), but the whole doesn’t equal the sum of its parts.

That’s because cheese grits are not compatible with sautéed apples, even if sautéed onions, a fried egg, sprouts and a balsamic drizzle do their best to obscure that fact.

Conversely, the components of the enormous Bacon and Kimchi Burger ($12.50) — one of the better burgers I’ve tried lately — fit together like a finished jigsaw puzzle. A great house brioche roll holds a thick and expertly seared, seriously juicy patty flattered by crisp bacon plus the yin-and-yang allure of melted cheddar playing off thick-cut kimchi.

Like all sandwiches here, it comes with a generous salad perked up by a creamy, herby and tangy dressing, or an always-vegan and usually terrific soup du jour such as a recent thick-

By G.A. Benton “Grandmothers are the best!” Caroline Kraus said as she explained that Baba’s — the fromscratch restaurant whose killer breakfast sandwiches I’ve been enthusiastically chomping lately — got its name from an Eastern European term for grannies.

The grandma influences don’t end there for this charmingly eccentric eatery, which co-owner Kraus and her husband, co-owner/ chef Dan Kraus, and co-owner/sous chef Tim Jones recently launched in (choose your preferred moniker) the Washington Beach/SoHud/University District neighborhood.

Baba’s grandma legacies extend to handme-down recipes, pots and pans and its lone table — a big, wooden communal number that once belonged to Jones’ grandmother. Other features inside the long, narrow and spare space include gleaming stainless steel kitchen fixtures, soothing gray paint, plants, a high ceiling with wooden rafters, windows overlooking the relocated Used Kids Records and a still-evolving, tiny menu.

If you know about previous culinary projects spearheaded by Dan Kraus — such as Baba’s Porch, the food-on-wheels business often parked at Seventh Son Brewery, and defunct That Food Truck, one of the best of its kind back when it was still cruising Columbus

streets — you’ll correctly expect that Baba’s few menu items will be lusty and delicious, labor-intensive dishes.

Local sourcing plus in-house butchering, baking and charcuterie-making have always played a large part in Kraus’s cuisine, and that continues at this brick-and-mortar newbie. Because Baba’s out-of-the-chute hours only cover morning through early afternoon, breakfast is the current point of emphasis.

This brings us back to those inspired breakfast sandwiches ($8). At first glance, you might think of them as the artisanal answer to the Egg McMuffin. But after a bite or five, you’ll realize that they’re far more substantial and are packed with far more flavor.

The base is a warm, soft and comforting “griddle muffin.” This distinct, faintly sweet

and nutty house roll is tinted light brown — save for its cornmealflecked, griddle-toasted, golden-brown top — because it’s made with healthy spelt grains sourced from Stutzman Farms in Amish country.

The hearty muffin gets loaded with melted havarti cheese, a fried egg and a choice of meat or veggies. I’m a fan of the seared, house-made sausage slab boldly flavored with sage and a bit of chili flake. But I love Baba’s garlicky, fiery-yet-nuanced Mexican-style chorizo.

When washed down with an excellent cup of locally roasted Thunderkiss coffee ($2.50), it’s a breakfast of champions — and grannies.

Former Blind Lady Tavern bartender Alex Chien recently partook in the Most Imaginative Bartender competition. In the final round of the contest, spearheaded by the U.S. Bartenders’ Guild, Chien faced off against nine other master mixologists in London.

He didn’t take the title, but “according to sources, he was very close to winning,” said Seth Laufman, owner of Blind Lady Tavern.

Chien, who started working at the Downtown bar in 2015, has since moved on. He will serve as bar manager for Watershed Distillery’s full-service restaurant, opening in February.

But there are still plenty reasons to come to Blind Lady Tavern, including its rich history. It’s reportedly the oldest bar in the state.

“There’s a place in Yellow Springs, Ohio, that says they’re the oldest, but just doing the math … it doesn’t appear to be true,” Laufman said.

That place would be Ye Olde Trail Tavern, which opened in 1847. However, Blind Lady Tavern was operating as a watering hole as early as 1831.

“There was a carriage section for travelers to park their carriages and horses,” Laufman said.

For many years, the tavern was known as the Jury Room — “It was a place where court workers would come,” Laufman said.

In 2014, new management christened the establishment 1831 Tavern after receiving backlash for its first name, Balls, which referred to its specialization in meatballs.

When Laufman took over in August 2015, he only had to make minor changes to the vintage décor — “A little lipstick and rouge,” he said — which includes a pressed-tin ceiling, striped walls and chandeliers.

The menu includes creative cocktails like the popular Jury Room, made with bourbon and blackberry purée, and Cajun-inspired dishes designed by Chef Danielle Leeman.

Unfortunately, running the business leaves Laufman little time for hobbies.

“It used to be golf and hockey, but that’s since changed,” said the Athens native, who studied sports administration at OU. After college, he got a job with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks before moving to San Francisco to work in the bar and restaurant industry.

“I learned a whole new world existed in food and cocktail culture,” he said.

He returned to Ohio 10 years later. “I realized I would never own anything,” he said of his time in the expensive West Coast city. Additionally, he wanted to be closer to family.

As for the future of Blind Lady Tavern, Laufman hopes to continually “churn out a product that people are excited about and return for,” especially as the Downtown nightlife scene continues to grow.

If you’re a newcomer, he recommends visiting Tuesday through Thursday, or on Saturday night.

“We do get busy but it’s still not too much of a rush,” he said. “People want to stay and hang out for a while.”

Work starts in Cardington, OH, & TVL to various venues in: FL & OH. No cost HOUS, TSPT, work tools, supplies & EQP provided. Salary / location, ranging from $8.93 to $11.87, average $10.29/hr. Merit increases/bonuses may be awarded.

TSPT (including meals and if necessary lodging) to the place of EMPL provided, if the worker completes 1/2 the EMPL period. Return TSPT provided if the worker completes the EMPL period or is dismissed early by the employer.
