Since surfacing in July, “Pokemon Go” has attracted digital gamers to explore real-world environments, some kid-friendly (Metro Parks, the zoo) and others decidedly less so (Sirens, a north side strip club, is the site of one adults-only PokeStop). With Kanye West bringing the Saint Pablo Tour to the Schottenstein Center on Sunday, Sept. 25, we thought we’d use the polarizing artist as inspiration for this week’s list. There were so many directions to choose from: top rants, reasons some of us “miss the old Kanye,” chapters of the Taylor Swift “narrative.”

But we chose to honor West’s brilliance as a producer by assembling some of his more memorable samples.

regory Wheeler, who was shot three times during a late July robbery in Linden Park, said the effort required to complete once-simple tasks has been the biggest adjustment he’s been forced to make during his recovery.

Doing laundry has become a Sisyphean undertaking, as have trips to the bathroom, which require him to hop onelegged up 20 or so stairs to the second floor of his North Linden home. Oh, and it can now take him an entire month to hatch a single egg when he was hatching upwards of three a day prior to the attack.

See, Wheeler, 27, is an avid “Pokemon Go” player — he was actually trying to help friend Samantha Haub catch a Vulpix (picture a squirrel as drawn by “My Little Pony” animators) at the time of the robbery — and the hatching of these digital “eggs” is fueled by footsteps, which have been in short supply since he was

shot. These days, Wheeler, who sustained gunshot wounds to each thigh and another to his right foot that shattered four bones and partially severed a toe, gets around with the aid of a self-propelled, wheeled scooter. He expects to make a full recovery and resume walking by February or so.

Though slowed in his digital pursuits, Wheeler, an Ohio State graduate student studying evolutionary plant biology, never abandoned them.

Just days after the incident, he posted a photo of his latest Pokemon capture: a Spearow perched at the end of his hospital bed.

He also took time out early in his recovery to post a note about his attack via Facebook that quickly spread far outside the expected circles. “I don’t think it went full-on viral,” Wheeler said during an early September interview adjacent to Mirror Lake on the OSU campus, “but it got around a little bit.”

Now when people ask, ‘Are you that guy?’ I’ve started to say, ‘Oh, you’ve seen my research?’”

Not that he isn’t enjoying certain aspects of the notoriety that have accompanied these so-called 15 minutes. As our interview drew to a close, Wheeler struck up a conversation with a woman playing

“Pokemon Go” at a nearby table, filling her in on the Pokemonthemed group he’s in the process of incorporating as an official student organization (it will be known as the Ohio State University Augmented Reality Club). After explaining her relative newness to the game, and learning of Wheeler’s comparatively veteran trainer status, the woman looked up from her phone and said, “Show me your ways.”

While it’s a safe bet 10-year-old Greg was somewhere inside beaming, there was no doubting the smile sported by the full-grown, 27-yearold version seated here. And so the summer of Pokemon continues, calendar be damned.

For about as long as Wheeler can remember, Pokemon has served as both a social outlet and a form of escape.

In his much-shared Facebook post, the grad student noted “Pokemon Go” helped him conquer his depression, allowed him to get more exercise and served as a welcome boon to his social life, even landing him a date.

Wheeler first started playing Pokemon when he was 7, though it was forbidden in his private school because administrators considered it a form of gambling. Years later, when he won his first undergraduate research symposium and received a check for $100, he invested the funds in a Nintendo DS and “Pokemon Diamond,” much to the chagrin of his academic advisor. “She made fun of me endlessly,” he said. “’You’re a legitimate scientist and you spent your science money on Pokemon?’ Damn right.”

When “Pokemon Go” surfaced in July and immediately became a shared cultural moment, Wheeler felt as though his childhood dreams were coming true. He recounted scenes of polar opposites bonding over a shared love of the game, like the clean-cut foreign exchange students approached by a dreadlocked, tattooed crust-punk — “I’d describe him as ‘industrial,’” Wheeler said — who greeted the couple by asking, “Hey, did you guys see that Growlithe?” Wheeler, a noted introvert, also found himself interacting more with his fellow students.

“One of the things that happened, these two women came up to [my friend and I while we were playing ‘Pokemon Go’ on campus] — even recounting this it sounds completely ridiculous — and said, ‘Hey, you guys look like experienced Pokemon battlers. Would you teach us how to be good at Pokemon battling?’” Wheeler said, and laughed. “And we just looked at each other like, ‘Did this happen?’

“This was a thing where 10-yearold Greg thought, ‘One day women will appreciate me for my Pokemon expertise!’ And for a beautiful seven days it was real.”

Though the on-campus popularity of “Pokemon Go” has waned somewhat in recent times — a handful of players could be spotted deftly flicking at the screens of their smartphones during a

In the message, Wheeler detailed his feelings surrounding the incident, where he was attacked by a group of about a dozen children, ranging in age from 11 to 17, by his estimate, before he was shot from behind as he sought help at a nearby house. “I’m not angry at those who attacked me,” he wrote, “though I am saddened.”

Wheeler went on to express solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement (his attackers were black), as well as some of the concerns that plagued him in those moments he lay bleeding on that stranger’s front porch: Was his friend Samantha OK? (She was.) Would innocent lives be lost in the drive to bring the guilty to justice? (Thankfully not.) Is locking any young person away for an extended period the best means of rehabilitation?

As to that final question, David Sparks, the 14-year-old who confessed to pulling the trigger, was recently sentenced to 19 months in a state youth prison as part of a plea agreement worked out between prosecutors and defense attorneys. He’ll be eligible for release in seven months.

“He’d be eligible for release … if he meets conditions, like, he gets good grades in his schoolwork and if he goes to therapy and he doesn’t commit any other violations,” Wheeler said prior to the announced sentencing. “I said, ‘OK, that is probably more beneficial in the long run than locking him up until he’s an adult.’”

Wheeler attributes his sympathetic view of his attackers to the sometimes difficult path he’s been forced to navigate in life. “This is not the worst thing that has happened to me,” he said.

As a teenager, Wheeler, a Gulf Shore native who grew up just outside New Orleans, was displaced by Hurricane Katrina, eventually settling in Starkville, Mississippi, where he attended Mississippi State University.

More recently he lived through a difficult divorce.

“At this point I’m just like, ‘Tragic things happen,’” said Wheeler, whose family lost everything in Katrina. “I’ve been through more things than many people my age, and that makes me somewhat empathetic when it comes to situations like this.”

hen “Pokemon Go” launched on Wednesday, July 6, it was as if a magic magnet attracting new visitors to Columbus Metro Parks dropped out of the sky. Over the next few days, Blendon Woods staffers in Westerville noticed an influx of visitors filling parking lots and staring at their phones along the park’s trails.

The Blendon Woods ranger and his staff responded quickly, fashioning a makeshift sign out of poster board.

“Pokemon trainers: We support your quest to catch ’em all!” the sign read, while also noting some park rules and

reminders, such as “Only park in designated lots, not on grass or roads.”

Soon enough, Highbanks — typically Metro Parks’ busiest location — was flooded with “Pokemon Go” players, too.

The huge Lewis Center park boasts two gyms and is rife with PokeStops. Plus, it contains a rare Charmander nest, making it one of the few spots where trainers consistently catch the cute orange Pokemon with a fire-tipped tail. Visitors came from cities throughout Ohio and even from neighboring states.

Unlike some park districts elsewhere that were initially resistant to “Pokemon Go,” Metro Parks created and shared a Google map of all the

gyms and PokeStops at every Columbus-area Metro Park. By the end of July, attendance at Highbanks had increased more than 90 percent compared to the same month last year.

“We welcome the Pokemon trainers,” said Metro Parks spokesperson Peg Hanley. “The groups coming in are not people who have typically been to a Metro Park. ... You hear, ‘We didn’t even know these parks were here.’”

While the crowds have died down a bit, there’s still a steady stream of trainers at Highbanks. On a recent sunny Friday afternoon, the parking lot next to the Nature Center (a PokeStop) was nearly full. Visitors wandered the trails

while staring at their phones, checking in at PokeStops and catching Pokemon Shawn Hoetger, 31, drove from Granville with the goal of catching enough Charmander to evolve a Charmeleon into Charizard. Now at Level 27, Hoetger has been playing “Pokemon Go” since the day it was released, partially for nostalgic reasons. He grew up collecting Pokemon cards.

Recently, though, Hoetger began sensing that his pursuit of Pokemon isn’t always so welcome. When passing other people on the trails, he puts his phone by his side. “I don’t really tell people,” he said. “People frown upon it.”

the players are getting outside, exercising and spending time in nature, but he’d rather these new park-goers (who rarely say “hi”) not stare at their phones while hiking. “I’d rather them be outdoors and enjoy the actual outdoors,” Greg said.

He’s also not a fan of the limited weekend parking at Highbanks, and he’s noticed more litter: cigarette butts, plastic water bottles, paper and even a beer can by a stream.

Despite the downsides, Hanley and the rest of the Metro Parks staff continue to embrace the Pokemon phenomenon by frequently offering Pokemon-related program-

ming and by making new visitors feel welcome.

“There were these two kids, and I was wearing a Metro Parks shirt, and I think they thought I was gonna yell at them,” Hanley said. “But I said, ‘Hey, what’d you guys find? I’m looking for [Pokemon].’

They were like, ‘What?!

She gets it!’”

Hanley recently hit Level 16 in the game and bought a “Pokemon Go is my cardio” T-shirt. “For people to get out, get active and get into a park, that’s what we’re about.

If Pokemon did it, I’m all for it,” she said. “I’m looking for something to drop out of the sky every season for us.”

gym A place where trainers can go to work out their Pokemon to help them build physical strength — sort of like a real gym, minus the blaring soundtrack and rampant old-dude locker-room nudity.

Hanley said there have been some negative side effects to all the people searching for pocket monsters in the parks.

Some aren’t familiar with park etiquette, so Hanley has seen an increase in litter, as well as visitors taking mountain bikes onto non-bike trails and pets onto non-pet trails.

Some groups of trainers also clog trails for hikers and runners.

And while there have been no reported injuries related to “Pokemon Go,” Hanley said the increased traffic in parking lots led to nine fender benders at Highbanks between July 6 and September 16.

Last year there were no reported car accidents through July.

Some longtime visitors to Highbanks voiced their concerns on social media and on homemade signs they posted near the park entrance that read “Pokemon Go Away!” “Honk to Save Highbanks” and “Wild Lives Matter.”

“The regulars thought we put the Pokemon there because they didn’t know anything about the game,” Hanley said. “They were asking, ‘Why did you put these characters here?’”

On that same Friday afternoon at Highbanks, Greg, a 65-year-old hiker, arrived dressed in a plaid shirt, shorts and white tennis shoes with his trailready accessories (backpack, belt-loop compass, clip-on sunglasses). He had mixed feelings about the influx of visitors gazing at their phones.

Greg, who declined to give his last name, didn’t know much about the game, and he was glad

Columbus Zoo trains Pokemasters on Conservation By eriCA Thompson // @miss_ethompson approximately 2 million yearly visitors can attest, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has a lot to offer.

There’s the Zoombezi Bay waterpark, Safari Golf Club and a smorgasbord of exciting events. At the heart of it all are the animals — Alaskan brown bears

Brutus and Buckeye, reticulated python Hanna and approximately 10,000 others.

But since July, numerous patrons have been more interested in a new crop of creatures lurking in corners across the 588-acre complex — and out of the control of the zoo.

“The little things move all over the place,” said Vice President of Technology Services Gregg Oosterbaan.

The creatures in question are Pokemon, and they’re part of the augmented reality game “Pokemon Go.” “It really struck us as amazing the first couple days, how many people were here to play,” Oosterbaan said.

In addition to the alleged 151 types of Pokemon that pop up on visitors’ screens, Technology Services quickly noticed a whopping 60-plus PokeStops and six gyms, or battle locations, scattered throughout the zoo.

“There were a few that were in some strange places,” Oosterbaan said. “But there aren’t any that you can’t get to, because of the way the game is designed.”

For example, even though there is

a PokeStop on a termite mound in the African savanna, patrons are able to access the feature on their screens while standing on the public paths. Similarly, they will “bump” into Pokemon well outside of animal enclosures.

“And we kinda watched … whether [people] had any urge to get any closer than just the public walkways, and we didn’t really see any problems,” Oosterban said. “In fact, it’s been kinda fun to watch people [play].”

“We’ve seen all walks of life,” said Senior Education Instructor Stacey Glatz. “I’ve heard people say they’ve lost weight. I’ve heard a dad say, ‘This is one of the few things I do with my

Attendees will have a chance to win admission to a mystery dinner theater show, a lunchtime pizza party or an after-hours tour.

Patrons aren’t the only “Pokemon Go” players; zoo employees are also joining the fun. “You see people [playing] on their lunch hour,” Glatz said. “[Or] they change their shirt and walk around a little bit after their shift.”

Of course not everyone is into the game. “On social media, we just get people who point out, ‘Oh I just wish people would enjoy the animals,’” said Communications Assistant Shirley Blaine.

“They’re still getting the nature benefit,” Glatz said. “They’re still out here at the zoo. … Hopefully they will see some animals. Hopefully they will learn something about conservation even though their main goal is to play Pokemon.”

Glatz has also seen a lot of people hanging around the pond catching water Pokemon, as well as setting lures to draw Pokemon.

“During the height of summer …

I would say there’d be at least five to eight lures around the zoo at any given point of the day,” she said.

Witnessing people purchasing memberships solely to play “Pokemon Go,” the zoo decided to create an educational event around the craze back in August.

Patrons were given trainer cards and earned badges, or stickers, by answering conservation questions at each region of the zoo. Once they filled up their cards, they could trade them in to enter to win an after-hours tour of the zoo.

“We had people not want to turn in their cards because they liked the badges so much,” Glatz said. “We didn’t raise a ton of revenue, which is fine. We had some gift shop sales, which is great, but the main reason for the education side of it was to get the conservation message out there … especially to audiences that we don’t normally reach.”

Campaigns mobilize voters with ‘pokemon go’

Shortly after the “Pokemon Go” release and before you could say “‘Pokemon Go’ to the polls,” Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton had begun using the game to mobilize voters in Ohio.

According to the Dispatch, Clinton campaign organizers held events that incorporated game play and voter registration during the week of July 11. (The game was made available to the public on July 6.) One Lakewood, Ohio, event, for example, promised to set a lure at Madison Park to provide Pokemon to those who came to register voters and learn more about Clinton. The Cincinnati Enquirer also reported the Clinton campaign targeted voter registration efforts at PokeStops statewide, viewing them as prime locales for locking in the assembled,

largely millennial voters.

Here in Columbus, environmental advocacy group NextGen Climate Ohio held similar events at Goodale Park and Mirror Lake at Ohio State University.

“This new craze fits perfectly with our youth vote program, which has a goal of registering 40,000 new voters,” NextGen Climate Ohio spokeswoman Amanda Wurst told the Dispatch.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, meanwhile, released a short Facebook video depicting Clinton dodging Pokeballs alongside text predicting her next evolution would be “unemployed.” Trump’s current odds of winning the election are around 43 percent, according to the most recent FiveThirtyEight election forecast.

Any adolescent “Pokemon Go” players attempting to “catch ’em all” might have to call in an older relative to hit up one of the more, um, unique PokeStops that has turned up on the local radar: Sirens, a North Side strip club that has received its fair share of confused players since the game debuted in July.

Though T (just T, thank you) was about as forthcoming as you’d expect from someone working strip club security, he did offer a few details during a recent phone call, noting that the PokeStop is centered on a “tasteful statue” of the Roman goddess Venus located just outside the entry to the club.

“We had some employees here who discovered [the club was a PokeStop],” T said. “We’ve got cameras everywhere, and we saw cars and people stopping outside.

When we went out to ask what they were doing, they said they were catching some Pokemon right outside our front door.”

While T hesitated to call it the most unique thing he’s experienced working in the industry — “I’ve seen quite a few different things,” he offered cryptically — he did admit the various couples and singles (he couldn’t recall seeing any families) congregating outside and snapping cellphone pictures of digital creatures had introduced an unexpected element to life at the club.

“The ones who drive by [to catch Pokemon] are the really funny ones,” he said. “They’re sitting outside wondering, ‘What is this place?’

“It’s rather amusing.”

The concept itself — a live, timed design challenge — was intriguing. But the additional features, including a DJ spinning classic R&B and hip-hop, craft beer and a lively audience made the event even more enjoyable. I loved the audience participation, and it was cool to witness the talent of the two finalists. Congratulations again, Kayla!

T

o hear Jennifer Herrema tell it, we should be flattered.

“We’ve had a ton of other shows offered, and Neil’s always like, ‘No, no, no, no, no way,’” she said recalling the rejections of Neil Hagerty, the yin to Herrema’s yang and other half of the notorious, art-damaged noise-boogie outfit Royal Trux, which released 10 studio albums between 1988 and 2000, largely on Drag City.

“But then this one in Columbus popped up and I was like, ‘Columbus! Yes! Great town! We gotta do Columbus.’”

After a bit of schedule maneuvering, Hagerty was in. The appearance, which takes place during Helter Swelter in the parking lot of Ace of Cups on Saturday, Sept. 24, is only Royal Trux’s third reunion show, following much-hyped dates in Los Angeles and New York.

In a time when nostalgia is so carefully managed and rock comebacks (replete with personal trainers and facelifts) are par for the course, Royal Trux serves as the anti-reunion antidote, an opportunity seemingly solely driven by a chance to make art in the moment once again.

“Nobody knows what it’s going to sound like this time,” Herrema said, confessing the lineup for this date (which will feature Oneida drummer Kid Millions) will have never played nor rehearsed together before they hit the stage.

Some might call that a bit haphazard, but in the world of Royal Trux, such fleeting intensity and potential provocation is perfectly fitting. The group’s ’90s output was borne out of

an embrace of the random, blissfully mining the ground between free-noise experimentation and ’70s rock choogle, with a rotating cast of side characters. (Little-known fact: Columbus’ live karaoke piano man Parker Paul was a member of Royal Trux for a hot minute while in Virginia.) Royal Trux was an ongoing Fluxus art project that held the likes of Black Oak Arkansas, Can, the Rolling Stones, Albert Ayler, glam and ’70s NBA style in equal trashy reverence.

Inseparable indie-rock glimmer twins Herrema and Hagerty burned hot for most of the ’90s, playing the role of the alternative star couple, until — oh, the irony — they themselves were lured into the middle of the alt-rock boom, signing to Virgin Records for seven figures. To be sure, it was the duo’s image that often superseded the music. With fur coats, aviator glasses and rail-thin frames, a pharmaceutical, haute couture vibe amplified their status as heroin-chic poster children (Herrema was even a model for a Calvin Klein ad campaign).

Bell bottoms aside, the band’s middecade trilogy of albums — Cats and Dogs (1993), Thank You (1995) and Sweet Sixteen (1997) — still hold up amazingly well, documents of an inimitable brand of chaotic, narcotic singtalk that made few apologies.

But the flame eventually burned out, and the duo parted ways in the early 2000s, both professionally and personally. Herrema lives in the Costa Mesa, California area now, and Hagerty is based in Denver. Each continues to make music (Hagerty with the

Howling Hex, Herrema with Black Bananas), but it wasn’t until last year that the seeds of playing as Royal Trux again were planted by Hagerty, according to Herrema.

“He was playing out here and called and said, ‘We need to talk,’” she said. “Our agents got together and worked it out, and — bam! — it’s done. The venue was like eight blocks from my house, so it’s crazy how it all worked out.”

That first reunion — a show many thought would never happen — took place during the 2015 Berserktown Festival in Los Angeles and received glowing reviews for its intensity.

“It’s like one day, I woke up and [Neil] wasn’t mad at me anymore,” Herrema recalled with a laugh. “I always knew it would happen. It just takes people time to come around.”

There’s no good reason the Lindsay never got the same attention some of its noisy peers received back in the day. A Dan Deacon performance is nothing like the indie-rock, punk and metal shows Ace of Cups tends to host. If you’re standing in the back of the room with arms crossed and head nodding, you’ll be sorely out of place. Deacon, armed with one music stand and a single mic, whips his crowd into a giggly frenzy with positive vibes (his most recent single is titled “Change Your Life (You Can Do It)”) and uninhibited energy. Audience participation is mandatory as the Baltimore musician plays his danceable, cartoonish electro-pop and attempts to rid everyone in the room of their pentup anxieties.

Ryley Walker may have released a new album last month, but for the singer/guitarist and his band, it’s already old news. “We’re working on the next [record] right now. It’s going in a cool, new direction,” Walker said by phone from his home in Chicago, resting between legs of the current tour.

“I’m not really into old stuff. I just want to keep fresh, keep moving, keep doing the next weird thing.”

That restlessness manifests itself in Walker’s live performances, too. About half of the show is improvised, which makes each concert a truly unique experience not just for the audience but for the band.

“The goal is to make every single show fucked up and weird in its own way,” Walker said.

On Golden Sings That Have Been Sung (Dead Oceans),

Walker includes more personal observations than on his previous release, Primrose Green, which dealt more in the abstract. “I like records that have embarrassing or uncomfortable things about your own life,” he said. “I wanted that to be in the music.”

But that doesn’t mean Walker’s lyrics are strictly autobiographical. “I only have a Christian education,” he sings on “Sullen Mind,” a meandering tune in the vein of recent Sun Kil Moon.

“I didn’t grow up religious,” Walker said. “I’m white bread from the Midwest. I only have basic manners. I’m a simple person. That’s kind of what that means.”

Golden Sings puts significant distance between the Jack Rose and John Fahey influences found in Walker’s previous records. He seems to have found a new voice and a new way of writing that incor-

porates the folkie leanings of his past and meshes it with his jazz-head obsessions.

The new album also features Columbus drummer Ryan Jewell, whom Walker met at a music festival in West Virginia several years ago. Jewell will man the kit at the band’s Wexner Center gig on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

Walker also credited his producer, former Wilco multiinstrumentalist LeRoy Bach, with ridding him of his inhibitions so he could arrive at the sounds he’d been hearing in his head. “Every sound that comes out of the record was my own, but LeRoy helped me not feel self-conscious about it,” Walker said. “I gave him

It’s going to be hard to top Joan Shelley’s Nelsonville Music Festival performance. The hum of cicadas filled the air, adding a summery, ambient drone to the singer/guitarist’s hypnotic, pureas-snow singing and Nathan Salsburg’s crisp, melodic additions on second guitar. But a no-opener “Evening with Joan Shelley” at the Wex should be a treat, too, since the songwriter’s modern take on trad folk won’t be fighting against the din of a crowded bar.

Bridesmaid

When Bridesmaid first rumbled to life six years ago, the band, then a trio, originally envisioned its music would be dumber and slower.

But over the course of three albums, including the just-released International House of Mancakes, Bridesmaid’s instrumental sound has done the precise opposite, gradually picking up speed like a massive boulder tumbling downhill. At times, the group has even exaggerated this acceleration for comic effect, like a recent practice when it attempted to play the songs double-time in order to cut rehearsal time in half. (This endearingly ridiculous sense of humor surfaces in song titles like “Hungry Like Nick Wolf” and “Stay at Home Brad.”)

Musically, however, Mancakes means business, building around the muscular double-bass attack of Bob Brinkman and Scott Hyatt and dual drummers Cory Barnt and Boehm, who shift between trading punches and a more synchronized brutality—a tag-team effect that comes in handy during the band’s earthquaking live shows.

“I think it works to emphasize certain points and expand on other ones,” Hyatt added. “I think any time Bob and I might be playing the same thing, Cory and Boehm are going to take it upon themselves to accent different beats the other one might not.”

A similarly symbiotic relationship exists between Hyatt and Brinkman, with Hyatt’s comparatively crisp tone filling out the mid-range while Brinkman floods the venue with low-end sound waves that rumble in the gut as much as in the eardrums.

“When I listen to live recordings of us I can hear Scott’s notes more defined,” Brinkman said.

“But I know when my parts come in because I hear this [whoosh], and that’s what I’m trying to do: fill the room with that warm, vibrating mass of tone.”

Though the bandmates are longtime friends, the music is driven in part by a natural tension that exists between the players, with two members — Barnt and Hyatt — favoring a slightly more measured approach while the others drift towards a looser, more rock-oriented sound. (Hyatt ascribed this dichotomy to his and Barnt’s shared experiences in marching and performance band.)

“On my own, I’ll write these really stark time signature changes where it’s super harsh and you feel like you’re going to run into a wall when something changes,” Brinkman said. “[Barnt] makes me bash that out into something that’s more pleasing, so the music is more fun [sounding] than it was when we started.”

Tenement (noun): A run-down and often overcrowded apartment house, especially in a poor section of a large city.

Tenement (proper noun): A ramshackle and often prolific Wisconsin rock band that plays cramped, overcrowded venues like Used Kids, which it visits for a concert on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

On the whole, Tenement albums can be unsteady affairs, veering between roots-oriented, tear-inyour-beer ballads (“Lonesome Crying Eyes”) and hooky, driving pop-rock numbers like “The Strangest Couple

in Love,” which falls near the end of the band’s 2016 self-titled album.

Frontman Amos Pitsch — also an accomplished collage artist — channels the Replacement’s Paul Westerberg both in his fondness for extremes (songs range from gorgeous to grating) and his willingness to occasionally wear his heart on his sleeve.

“The roads of home all lead to you,” he sings on one sighing number, sounding like a man ready to kick up his heels at home for a bit — though not before this intimate North Campus gig.

It’s odd that Built to Spill, one of the most influential indie-rock bands of the ’90s, has been on a major label (Warner Bros.) for 20 years. There are so many bands doing subpar, synth-based, anthemstriving electro-pop. But after seeing Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry own the stage at the Pitchfork Music Festival in 2015, the band’s catalog came to life for me. Mayberry has figured out how to write fist-pumping choruses that are simultaneously vulnerable and uplifting. “We are made up of our mistakes / We are falling but not alone,” she sings on “Make Them Gold,” off last year’s breakthrough sophomore album Every Open Eye. CD102.5 brings Chvrches to town for Fall Fest, along with Frank Turner, Jake Bugg and others. (Safe bet) To celebrate the 60th anniversary of WCBE, the public radio station assembled a solid lineup of solo sets from some standout Columbus songwriters: Joe Peppercorn (the Whiles), Jessica Wabbit (the Girls!), Happy Chichester (Howlin’ Maggie, RC Mob), Quinn Fallon (X-Rated Cowboys, Los Gravediggers), Sue Harshe (Scrawl, Fort Shame), Milan Karcic (Salt Horse) and Two Cow Garage’s Shane Sweeney and Micah Schnabel. Even if you only make it to half the show, that’s an impressive slate of our city’s songwriting talents. (Safe bet)

It’s hard not to think of Mac DeMarco when listening to Mild High Club’s new record, Skiptracing. Singer and principal songwriter Alex Brettin delves into similarly laid-back, psych-pop territory, and even uses strikingly similar guitar tones on some of the songs. The L.A. group also pays homage to the Beach Boys with cascading choral harmonies on the brief “Ceiling Zero,” but the overall effect is too derivative to stand out. (Think twice)

“Turn off the TV, turn off the news … the bullshit’s got to go!”

Simpson sang as his final words of the concert hung in the air. It’s a message that’s not so different from Timothy Leary’s “Turn on, tune in, drop out” instructions from the ’60s, except Simpson’s medium is country music — a genre that has, with a few exceptions (Chris Stapleton, Miranda Lambert and Kacey Musgraves come to mind), moved in an increasingly apolitical direction, churning out radio-friendly, brocountry pablum.

When Simpson walked off stage, his denim shirt drenched in sweat, he didn’t seem like country music’s savior. There’s not enough ego there for a messianic complex; he’s as much a father as an outlaw. So call him what you want. Simpson is merely content to operate outside the lines.

Those early tunes foreshadowed a Sailor’s Guide song like “Keep Between the Lines,” in which Simpson advised his child to “stay in school, stay off the hard stuff and keep between the lines.”

While that rendition and others crackled with energy, the biggest crowd sing-along of the night was “In Bloom,” in which Simpson remade the Nirvana tune into a gorgeous love song.

Simpson ended the evening with the album’s closing track, “Call to Arms,” a politically charged song that began as a critique of recent wars (“The bodies keep piling up every day”) and morphed into a takedown of our reactions to them (“Nobody is lookin’ up to care about a drone /All too busy lookin’ down at our phone”).

“Call to Arms” urged a different kind of fight.

For the first hour of Sturgill Simpson’s soldout concert at Express Live on Wednesday, Sept.

14, it was as if the neocountry firebrand didn’t have a new album that recently hit No. 1 on the country chart. Instead of starting with the new stuff, Simpson, backed by a virtuosic touring band and a standout, three-man horn section, played a mix of covers and songs from his first two albums.

Known for his reverence of outlaw country artists like Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard, Simpson approached his early material with a similar lawlessness, extending songs to let his musicians riff at will.

“Long White Line,” off Simpson’s breakout sophomore record Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, even incorporated portions of Led Zeppelin’s version of “When the Levee Breaks.”

And yet, no matter what jaw-dropping licks the lead guitarist cooked up or what brassy, soulful digressions the red-faced horn section pursued, Simpson’s slurry, Southern baritone was the highlight of each song, despite Simpson telling the audience he’d felt sick all day. (The overall volume of the show could have come up, though. The horns were plenty loud, but Simpson’s acoustic guitar was fighting to be

heard above the din of the dude-heavy crowd.)

Like his music and persona, Simpson’s stage was devoid of frills. A black backdrop hanging behind the band depicted a white skeleton with a spear poised to attack a jawless, red skeleton holding a pitchfork. It was a simple, striking way to convey a duality Simpson often wrestles with in his music — especially on new album A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, which he finally tapped into about halfway through the concert, starting with leadoff track “Welcome to Earth (Pollywog).”

“Hello, my son/ Welcome to Earth,” Simpson sang, setting the tone for what became a live rendition of the entire album, throughout which Simpson explored what it means to be a father.

The fatherly guideposts expanded on some of the concepts found on Metamodern Sounds. While it’s easy to get hung up on the druggy references and psychedelic imagery in a Metamodern song like “Turtles All the Way Down” (a favorite of this herb-scented crowd), a tune like “Life of Sin,” which the band tackled early on with a fierce tautness instead of the extended-jam treatment that other songs received, did more than hint at the consequences of such a lifestyle. “Every morning when I rise I look in the mirror and despise the sight of

Beck’s Tuesday show at Express Live outdoors covered nearly the entirety of the musician’s career and life, starting with childhood and ending, quite nearly, with one foot in the grave.

His grandparents, he told the crowd, had once lived in Columbus, and he’d visited often as a kid, “running wild in the streets.” The “weird memory” popped into his head earlier in the day, perhaps jarred loose by the truck that struck his tour bus and dislocated one of the musician’s ribs (which, he apologized, had limited his rowdiness).

Still, unlike the previous three stops on this tour, Tuesday’s concert didn’t include a rendition of his apocalyptic, weirdo-folk cult favorite, “One Foot in the Grave.”

As much as I might have been disappointed by the exclusion, perhaps it was for the best after all, because Beck was clearly in the mood to move on.

The set, overall, felt like a sigh of relief, a deep breath before whatever’s next comes barreling down on the musician. In the press leading up to his upcoming, as-yet-untitled new album, he’s spoken of a desire to have fun with his music again. Tuesday was largely representative of that.

The first half of the set functioned as a “greatest hits” retro-

spective. The musician opened with “Devil’s Haircut” before quickly doing away with “Loser” in the show’s second slot.

(Beck stumbled through one line of the latter before largely giving way to an audience sing-along.)

Even with a first half heavy on buoyant, party-starting dancers (“Mixed Bizness,” “Que’ Onda Guero”) and slacker anthems (“New Pollution”), paranoia and a sense of groundlessness crept in. “I know there’s something wrong ... don’t know what life that I’m livin’,” he sang on “Black Tambourine.”

Eventually, these feelings gave way to heartbreak and despair with multiple cuts from Sea Change and Morning Phases, before a ray of hope turned into a bombastic and soul-shaking take on “Where It’s At.” And then, rapturous applause and the lowering of lights — a brief respite before Beck was back onstage for the encore. A new man was before us, the musician

having traded his black leather jacket, hat and button-down for an all-white suit and hat.

Beyond the trappings of style, here was a nimbler Beck — a smoothdancing, sweet-talking performer confident in his power to “steal her eye,” but also, now, “not afraid to cry.”

By the time the bassheavy, chest-rattling new tune “Wow” surfaced in the penultimate slot, whatever resistance remained in both performer and crowd was long gone. The slacker we knew had turned a corner. Despite the clouds of reverb sticking thickly to his bars, as if to disguise the optimism, the new Beck was clearly, eagerly looking forward: “Wanna move into a fool’s gold room With my pulse on the animal jewels Of the rules that you choose to use to get loose With the luminous moves Bored of these limits, let me get, let me get it like: Wow!”

showed up after Jazzy Jeff, more than a little late and a little less than sober. However, he proved to be funny and entertaining, especially when he attempted some aerobics during the #90sFit segment.

He also shouted out the Short North.

Like DJ Jazzy Jeff, the other artists put on a great show and delivered exactly what the fans expected of them: hits.

In fact, each act had one massive song the crowd couldn’t wait to hear —“Everything You Want” from Vertical Horizon, “Thong Song” from Sisqo, “Crossroads” from Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony and “All for You” from Sister Hazel. There were some appreciated bonuses, like Sisqo’s rendition of “Billie Jean” — and execution of a mean Moonwalk — and Bone Thugs’ tribute to Tupac.

“If I could bring back anything from the ’90s, it would be real singing and dancing,” R&B artist Sisqo said backstage.

When asked the same question, Bone ThugsN-Harmony’s Wish Bone said “real lyrics.”

The first non-cover act was DJ Jazzy Jeff, who excited the crowd by spinning through classics like his and Will Smith’s “Summertime,” Arrested Development’s “People Everyday” and, of course, the “Fresh Prince of BelAir” theme song.

Being nostalgic for the 1990s is cool right now, at least for the niche group that attended 90sFest at Columbus Commons on Friday, Sept. 16. Although the crowd didn’t exactly pack the lawn, the event delivered on its promise of a totally engrossing time warp through music, fashion and activities.

One thing ’90s fans are obsessed with is Nickelodeon, and the brand dominated the fest. Attendees had their pictures taken with TV characters, including a cardboard cutout of Reptar from “Rugrats” and the main character from “Hey Arnold!” — aka “football head” — who walked around the event.

The television network-based fun didn’t end there. People signed up to get “slimed” as if they were characters on “Double Dare,” and giddily raced through a “GUTS”-inspired obstacle course — complete with the Aggro Crag mountain. Two competitors included Mike Dombrowski and Rochelle Nevedal, who participated in season 26 of “The Amazing Race.” They drove from Michigan to cover the event for a radio station.

Nevedal said she fulfilled a childhood dream by participating in the Nickelodeon challenge.

t may not seem all that groundbreaking to offer women artists the opportunity to speak, through their art, about issues facing women artists, but the decidedly male-centric history of art suggests otherwise.

“Dare to Be Heard” is the result of a two-year process to present such an exhibition, Columbus feminist artist Stephanie Rond curating the beginning of a conversation centering on issues of creativity and identity from the female perspective.

“When I say I’m a feminist, I mean equality for all,” said Rond, a Columbus muralist. “Everybody should feel welcome to come to this conversation and to look and to listen.”

Rond initially approached 15 women artists about participating in “Dare to Be Heard,” most either artists she knew or encountered in her research.

They all said yes.

“We wanted to work with women who were talking about their experience as women in the art world,” Rond said. “And we wanted to bring in other conversations about race, motherhood, religion.

“And we didn’t want just Columbus-based artists. This conversation is happening all over the country.

We have artists from Brooklyn, from Chicago. We have two international artists. We wanted to represent this larger, global discussion.”

The Cultural Arts Center offered Rond the opportunity to foster these conversations two years ago after getting called on the carpet, after a fashion. Arts Administrator Geoffrey Martin explained that a key component of a 2013 exhibition at the CAC about the previous 100 years in Columbus art was a timeline, which patrons were invited to participate in or comment on via sticky note.

It was a question, not an indictment, but it forced us to look back at our own history and look at more recent data and discover that representation for women in art is still startlingly low, especially for women of color.

“This then was our opportunity … to use the gallery as a tool to create a dialogue. We thought that would be right up Stephanie’s alley. More than curator, she’s been the heart and soul of this project.”

Rond saw her role as more of assembler or facilitator than of curator.

“We were looking to create a platform where everybody felt welcome to the conversation. The artists kind of curated that aspect of the exhibition,” she said. “These are artists who are talking about the same things I am, but as curator I tried to take myself out of the equation. People experience art in different ways.”

Admitting that “I like to say yes to the artists as much as possible,” Rond said that there were some curatorial criteria. She said that, despite the fact that she knew these artists’ work was informed by topics and ideas important

in developing “Dare to Be Heard,” the most significant criteria was that the artists make new work.

“We asked them to make new work specifically for this exhibition,” she said. “We wanted them to be inside their processes. We wanted to make sure their voice was represented [and] that they were adding to the conversation.”

“We wanted to ensure the conversation is relevant to what’s happening today,” Martin added. “But, more importantly, it was not about what we wanted to say but about finding people who had something of their own to say.”

Kessel said her piece for the exhibition, like much of her recent work, is about motherhood, assembling items that speak to the subject matter. She said the role is impacted both by traditional hierarchies and also by feminism.

“There is this accumulation … of things that wouldn’t be in your life if you weren’t a mother,” she said. “That stuff becomes symbolic iconography. It is my material, [like] paint or marble.”

“Dare to Be Heard” will also feature related programming throughout its approximately six-week run. Lectures, panel discussions, artist talks, poetry readings and a dance/theater performance are all planned. A full schedule

‘TwisTed 2’ inTerTwines The arTs

Twisting can indicate an act of intertwining separate things and making them one.

That might be the best way to think about “Twisted 2,” the collaborative performance featuring the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, BalletMet and Opera Columbus. All three companies share the stage, dancing, singing and playing simultaneously and in equal measure. In a word, twisted.

The three companies debuted the format in 2014 to great success, so bringing the concept back was an easy decision. “It was a difficult thing to forge, but once it was, the benefits were so great,” Opera Columbus Artistic Director Peggy Kriha Dye said.

“We knew we had a really great format,” BalletMet Artistic Director Edwaard Liang said. “But we wanted not just to do a repeat, but offer more production elements.”

Lighting, video projection and additional special guests – including the Columbus International Children’s Choir and Momentum youth performance program – will add freshness to the program, as will the adventurous repertoire and presentation. Music will include not just classic symphonic and operatic music but also the music of Edith Piaf, composer/ conductor/pianist André Previn and selections from Gershwin’s “Porgy & Bess.”

“The potential repertoire is endless, and there’s always something more to say,” Dye said.

“We wanted to select repertoire that fits two categories: music that is familiar and music that would be a discovery for many first-time concertgoers. Naturally, the repertoire also had to be movable and twistable,” said CSO Music Director Rossen Milanov; the performance will mark his first “Twisted” since the orchestra named Milanov director in 2014.

Dye said she hoped for even more twisting this time around, further integrating the singers into the movement and highlighting particular members of the orchestra.

“Some pieces are fundamentally intertwined. Others highlight different singers, dancers [and] musicians

at different moments,” Liang said. “At the end of the day, we wanted to make great art, not just have a gimmick [or] to do something just to say we did it.”

There’s no gimmick in the importance of these collaborative artistic efforts, which Dye called “the future of the arts.”

“It’s why we’re here: to serve the community and to teach, move and inspire,” Liang said.

Milanov called “Twisted 2” “a fantastic opportunity for us to show how the different elements of the arts, when combined, can create a truly immersing experience.”

Comedowns are harsh, so the friends always stay afloat. As a result, time moves slowly for Nathi. (“My hours,” he says at one point, “have become something foreign to me.”) Days and nights seep into each other, becoming almost like one long, woozy and confusing trip.

Until, that is, the novel lurches forward with the appearance of a mysterious masked man who offers to buy Nathi’s entire stock of ARVs. Nathi, suddenly, is forced to confront his past and the future he’s been putting off for so long.

In writing “The Reactive,” Ntshanga said he wanted to explore mortality, but he also “wanted to write what felt like a modern novel, something that kind of interrogated modernity in South Africa.”

The South Africa of “The Reactive” is deeply broken, cramped and rife with inequality. One rural neighborhood comprises endless rows of shipping containers used as homes, while the apartments in the city where the three friends spend most of their time contain

cracked, stained walls, broken floor tiles and pipe-rusted water.

Violence buzzes in the background, though it’s mostly unnoticed by the characters, in the same way that, over time, you can learn to ignore the train that passes behind your house. Seen from above, Ntshanga notes, South African fields look like honeycombs because they’re dotted with so many empty graves. Cecilia, for one, isn’t disturbed by the gunshots so much as the lack of sirens that follow. Nathi tries to justify the brutality around him.

“This isn’t so much killing as it is cleaning up a mess,” he says.

“These kids, all of them, they’re already dead.”

Masande Ntshanga will discuss “The Reactive” and more throughout Columbus this week. At 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, he’ll speak at CCAD as part of the college’s Visiting Scholar Series, and on Friday, Sept. 23, he’ll appear on WOSU Radio as part of the station’s books roundtable with Christopher Purdy.

You might have certain expectations for “The Reactive.” The author, Masande Ntshanga, certainly expects as much. After all, it’s a novel with an HIV-positive protagonist living in South Africa in the 1990s.

But to read the slim, 161-page work from local publisher Two Dollar Radio is akin to gazing into one of the abstract Mark Rothko paintings that continually pop up in the book. In other words, there’s much more to it than what might initially appear.

“That was something I wanted the book to have,” Ntshanga said.

“The closer you look at it, the closer you read it, the more things you start to discover. But at the same time, you can look at it from a distance and notice a symmetry and beauty with it.”

Take, for instance, the book’s drug use, which is simultaneously a means of escape, a door to intimacy and a protest against the country’s inequality.

“Though [the characters] might seem incredibly inactive, it’s kind of a moral decision,” Ntshanga said. “They’re trying to abstain from acting because they don’t know whether the consequences will result in the subjugation of someone else.”

“The Reactive” is, essentially, a coming-of-age story about Lindanathi, a middle-class South African who’s not exactly in a hurry to, well, come of age. (His name literally means “wait with me.”)

Following his little brother’s death — a fate he feels responsible for — Nathi drops out of college and becomes infected with HIV. He spends his days with his two friends, Cecilia and Ruan. Together they’re either selling his antiretroviral (ARV) drugs, which haven’t been widely distributed yet, or huffing glue, smoking joints and drifting in and out of parties and consciousness.

It’s art, it’s a party and, in many ways, it’s community service – a coming together of the community in support of an issue and an organization.

The 27th Art for Life, a biennial art auction benefitting Equitas Health (formerly AIDS Resource Center Ohio), will be held Saturday at the Columbus Museum of Art. Equitas provides healthcare to the LGBTQ community specifically and to underserved populations in general.

That it involves an art auction should surprise no one, Equitas spokesperson Joel Diaz said.

“The height of the HIV epidemic severely impacted the art community,” he said. “People lost friends and wanted to do something to contribute. So they gave their art.”

event, an effort was made to diversify the art offerings — to bring in new artists while keeping those who have regularly donated work. That latter group would include the late Denny Griffith, who was named the recipient of this year’s Art for Life Award.

why you should go Raw, fresh and physical. That’s the reputation of vanguard contemporary choreographer Faye Driscoll, and her latest work, “Thank You for Coming: Play,” bears it out. The Wexner Center hosts the premiere performances of Driscoll’s second work in a trilogy (“Thank You for Coming: Attendance” was presented at the Wex this past spring). This dance-play on personal narratives and identity was completed as part of a Wexner Center residency. “Play” is fascinating, but Driscoll could, to appropriate a colloquialism, choreograph the phone book and it’d be fascinating.

MINT hosts a group exhibition in which the participating artists tackle the notion of mobility and the politics of movement, exploring what it means to be mobile and what impedes mobility.

Exhibition coordinator and contributing artist Jacob Mason-Macklin said the collection is centered on the experiences of the five artists and “how we navigate the often overlooked, obscured or concealed structures within America that limit our mobility.” The show features work in a variety of mediums by artists Tyler Davis, Rodolfo Diaz, Cameron Granger, Kamron Hazel and Mason-Macklin.

This Short North gallery hosts an exhibition of graceful-yetintense works by Columbus artist Julia Hamilton. A longtime IT professional who maintains a studio at 400 West Rich, Hamilton’s work ranges in size and medium. “Between the Lines” includes recent small, mid-sized and large-scale dynamic and labor-intensive works in felt pen and alcohol ink on clay board along with digital drawings made with her fingertip on an iPad. The exhibition closes Saturday.

Director Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”) works from a script by Nic Pizzolatto (“True Detective”) and Richard Wenk (“The Expendables 2”). That combination is evident in some dialogue that strains to be poetic (“What we lost in the fire, we’ll find in the ashes.”) and the macho team assembled.

And that team dynamic we’ve seen a lot this year (“Suicide Squad,” etc.) still presents the same problems with uneven character development. Washington provides the gravitas, Pratt provides the comic relief, Hawke and D’Onofrio grab the moments they can. We’re never really compelled to connect to any of them, though.

The end result is a paint-by-numbers Western that will scratch that itch, but should have done a better job of justifying its existence. Oh, and Fuqua’s next film? A remake of “Scarface.”

Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke) is a dead-eyed sniper who’s still haunted by the horrors he saw in the Civil War. His partner Billy Rocks (Byung-hun Lee) is an assassin masterful with knives.

Rounding out the Seven, we’ve got Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), a burly tracker with an unusual demeanor, and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier), a Comanche warrior on his own path.

The Seven build an unlikely army from the unprepared townspeople and ready for the eventual epic showdown.

The 1960 incarnation of “The Magnificent Seven” is considered a classic Western, but it’s not so unimpeachable that it absolutely, positively shouldn’t be remade. You just better have a really good reason to do so.

The 2016 version of “The Magnificent Seven” seems to justify itself mostly with “because we can.” And given all the talent that was involved, it could have done a lot better.

Of course, the original was itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai,” so there’s that. If Hollywood hadn’t already reached remake inception, it has now.

Still, only the basic premise remains, with a fresh set of characters that are both racially diverse and plucked from a wealth of Western stereotypes.

The tiny town of Rose Creek finds itself in the grips of a wealthy industrialist named Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard, villaining up a storm). Under threat of violence, he offers homesteaders a measly sum for land he seeks to gold mine.

The frightened townspeople gather all their money in the hopes of enlisting the aid of bounty hunter Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington).

he third Thursday after Labor Day is Little Brown Jug day in Delaware. If you’re among the tens of thousands of fans who plan to attend that virtual jewel in the harness racing Triple Crown on Sept. 22, here’s some useful information: 12 West is a hip downtown Delaware restaurant that’ll leave you with plenty of cash to place on bets.

“Where Southwest meets Midwest” is how 12 West describes itself.

Although the tagline is a fair assessment, it doesn’t convey how sleek, stylish and inexpensive this modestsized restaurant is.

Earth tones and an alt-country-leaning soundtrack contribute a calming effect for the often-bustling space. Other features include mirrors, a cow-skull

sculpture and an expressive rendering of downtown Delaware. Because there are only about a half-dozen booths, many diners choose to belly up to the prominent bar.

If seeking an Ohio-made beer, 12 West’s four taps include selections from Four String Brewing Company, Rhinegeist and Old Firehouse Brewery.

If you prefer a cocktail, the Margarita

($7.50) is above-average, and the Mexican Punch ($7.25), which pairs well with the cuisine here, is even better — fruity, not overly sweet and deceptively strong.

To soak up the booze, choose the chips and mild, tangy tomato salsa ($1.50) over the underseasoned guacamole ($3). Two corn-based starters are much more impressive.

Minor quibbles aside, 12 West is definitely worth your dining time and dollars — whether you’re going to the big race or not.

Demonstrating what’s best about 12 West, the entrée-sized Blackened Shrimp Diablo ($9) is creative-yetaccessible. Sautéed corn and onions livened by a smoked tomato salsa form the hefty foundation for a sope-like, masa-dough corn cake. Adorning this are about a dozen zesty, good-quality shrimp plus basil. A vibrant red “pickled vegetable slaw” is the crowning glory on the dynamic dish.

For something simpler but similar, try the winning Roasted Corn Salad ($6). A heap of warm kernels is substantially enhanced by sautéed peppers, onions, garlic and a zingy, broth-like “sriracha vinaigrette” with just enough richness.

I could call the 12 West Burger ($11) “Southwest meets Midwest,” or “Tex-Mex with a twist,” but I’ll settle on terrific. A thick and juicy patty of ground beef blended with chorizo and placed on a toasted, buttery roll is further flattered by blistered white cheddar cheese, roasted-poblano mayo, avocado and tomato. On the side of the irresistibly messy sandwich are some of the best sweet potato fries around — long planks that are markedly grease-free and crispy.

Order the Cheese Enchiladas ($7.50 scores two), and you’ll receive something bigger than most burritos served elsewhere. Two fat wraps of puffy and toasted flour tortillas arrive slathered in roja sauce and packed with cheese. I enriched mine with chicken ($3 for big, flavorful pieces) and kicky queso dip (aka the $3 “smothered” option). Presented with paprika-accented Spanish rice and “cowboy beans” — nicely seasoned whole pintos — this is comfort food with panache.

Tacos are jumbo-sized, too. My favorite was the accurately described Crispy Pork Belly ($5.50) with mango salsa, queso fresco and red cabbage. I also enjoyed the Grilled Snapper taco ($5), even if the seared, tender, goodtasting fish played second fiddle to heavy garnishes of guacamole, mango salsa, lettuce and queso fresco.

The Carnitas taco ($3), jammed with pulled pork, pickled vegetables and red cabbage, was pleasant enough, if more representative of North Carolina than Mexico. I could similarly say the too-small Banh Mi on a too-soft bun

There are a few advantages to small plates: You can try more items as a table; you get a better sampling of a chef’s work; and you don’t have to commit to a full entrée you may not like. jammed carts up to your table and let you select from steamed dumplings, noodle dishes, fried chicken feet and everything in between. It’s best to go as a group — maybe with an experienced diner to lead the way — and order multiple dishes.

BArCelonA, GerMAn VillAGe Barcelona is a prime example of Spanish tapas, and the popular German Village eatery — also known for its sprawling patio — has pleased diners with its small plates for years. It’s hard to go wrong with everything from the chilled spiced peach soup to the aguacate relleno con queso (an avocado stuffed with goat cheese). Oh,

or the costillas (braised beef short ribs in a mushroom sauce) and the grilled baby octopus. Pair the dishes with a glass chosen from Barcelona’s ample wine selection.

While St. James Tavern now enjoys a steady stream of clientele, including patrons who visit the establishment as part of their Fourth Street bar crawl, its early years in Italian Village weren’t as fruitful.

“People were kind of scared to come here,” said bartender James Westfall. “There was more crime in the area … [and] there just wasn’t a whole lot of nightlife around here.”

But St. James weathered the storm, and will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year with a party on Saturday, Sept.

24. The ’90s-themed bash will feature rare beers, food from Street Thyme and a DJ set by Jason Thomas.

Although Westfall has only been part of the bar staff for about 3 1/2 years, he became a regular patron shortly after moving to Columbus in 2004.

“I’ve always been drawn to it because it’s like you can be anonymous, or you can come with a group, or you can come in and just chat with whoever’s bartending,” he said. “It’s always been a good time for me.”

While there have been some recent updates — “warm” red lighting, which matches the new felt on the pool tables, and local artwork on display — there are more familiar features that likely hold a million stories: The peace lily, at least 13 years old, that sits on the

refrigerator, the old pool tournament trophies that rest on the shelves and the various plastic toy animals that visitors have hidden around the bar over time.

Then there is the old TouchTunes jukebox, which has taken the top spot in the Alive “Best of” poll. From Al Green and the Beatles to Wu Tang and St. Vincent, the music selection appeals to all tastes.

“But we do get complaints that you can’t download anything and you can’t play it from your phone,” Westfall said.

And there’s other technology that the bar has yet to embrace.

“We still use a dial-up [internet] connection, so … when we run a credit card you can’t call the landline,” Westfall said.

But St. James keeps its microbrews up to date, rotating Ohio beers like Columbus Bodhi DIPA and Jackie O’s Mystic Mama IPA. According to Westfall, working at St. James comes with its challenges, like the time the bar hosted a party for

BrewDog after it announced plans to open its U.S. headquarters in Canal Winchester.

“There were four of us behind the bar,” Westfall said. “I was like, ‘Alright, I’m gonna step away, y’all.’ I just went for a walk.”

But the Warren native enjoys the unexpected nature of the job. “I will always be connected to [the industry] in some way,” said Westfall, who studied literature and women’s and gender studies at Ohio Wesleyan University.

And he has a vision for St. James during the next 20 years. “I want a similar structure in price and variety,” he said.

“But I might want to see a CD jukebox come back.”

Bear Grillz, Hailing from Yosemite national park, Grillz’s story begins on a typical afternoon spent growling at marmots and eating tourists. While busy trying to digest one particularly tricky mountain climber, he discovered amongst his possessions something called a ‘MacBook Pro’.

Anthony Green, Green was born and raised in Philadelphia, where he joined Zolof the Rock & Roll Destroyer in the late ‘90s before relocating to southern California in 2003. there, he briefly joined the screamo outfit saosin but ultimately left before the band signed to Capitol Records. He resurfaced with Circa survive and remained with the group throughout the decade’s latter half, during which period he also launched a solo career with the release of 2008’s Avalon. in between the release of his debut solo album and 2012’s Beautiful Things, Green went through some major life changes, including getting married and having a son. these personal shifts greatly influenced the songwriting and musical direction of his sophomore solo outing, with a deep focus on family, fatherhood, and devotional love. Rosenberg, an atheist, is the R. taylor Cole Professor of Philosophy at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. He also has secondary appointments in the biology and political science departments at Duke. He has served as a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota, University of California at santa Cruz and Oxford University.

He received his doctorate in philosophy from Johns Hopkins University.

Rosenberg is the author of several books, including the Atheist’s Guide to Reality (2011). He is co-director of Duke’s Center for the Philosophy of Biology. Gilmore, a Christian theist, is Professor of Bible and Philosophy at Freed-Hardeman University, Henderson, tennessee. Gilmore received his doctorate in philoso-

phy from the University of tennessee at Knoxville. He was an honor student in apologetics and philosophy of religion at Harding Graduate school of theology, studying under thomas B. Warren for whom Warren Apologetics Center is named. Gilmore is editor of Kingdom, an online academic religious journal published by Freed-Hardeman University College of Biblical studies. He has appeared in numerous discussion and debate forums on biblical and philosophical issues. Unlike many recent debates on the existence of God, both debaters have agreed to affirm and defend a precisely stated affirmative proposition.
