With both Big Boi and Big Thief visiting Columbus on Thursday, Sept.

ale Johnston didn’t do it.

He didn’t shoot and kill his stepdaughter and her fiance in Hocking County in October of 1982. He didn’t mutilate their bodies and dispose of their torsos in the Hocking River and their heads and limbs in a cornfield.

But right after the victims’ remains were found in southeast Ohio that fall, the Logan Police Department and Hocking County Sheriff’s Office homed in on Johnston, who was, quite literally, an outsider.

Several years before the murders, Johnston and his wife, Sarah, fell in love, left their previous marriages and moved from Xenia, Ohio, to a 53-acre farm situated on an unpaved road about 10 miles from downtown Logan. Dale was a country boy and loved being outdoors. He and Sarah occasionally embraced a clothing-optional lifestyle on the secluded property. Along with Sarah’s two daughters, Michelle and Annette Cooper, the Johnstons lived in tents until their trailer arrived. A barn

housed horses that drank from a stream running through the property.

Annette was 18 when she was found dismembered with her 19-year-old fiance, Todd Schultz. Rumors began circulating that Annette’s stepfather had molested her and must have killed her and Schultz in a jealous rage. Dale, Sarah and Michelle denied all the accusations, but Logan police and prosecutors insisted on a theory that Dale had shot and killed the teens at his farm, butchered them, bagged their bodies, threw their torsos in the river and buried the rest of the remains in a cornfield.

In September of 1983, Johnston was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated murder. In January of 1984, a three-judge panel found him guilty, and that March he was sentenced to die in the electric chair.

“There was an astounding lack of physical evidence in this case,” said Bill Osinski, a reporter who covered the murder trial for the Akron Beacon Journal and left no

stone unturned in his 2012 book about the case, “Guilty by Popular Demand.” “The investigation had been poisoned by rumors and gossip. … The people had to have blood for blood. They wanted somebody to pay, and Dale Johnston was the best option. He didn’t have friends in town. Didn’t go to church in town. Didn’t belong to any clubs.

He just hung out there in his trailer out in the hills.”

In 1988, the Ohio Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Johnston based partly on evidence the prosecution withheld, including eyewitness testimony that could have placed the murders at the cornfield (not on Johnston’s property), as well as testimony that should have been disallowed since it was brought about by hypnosis.

Johnston was freed in 1990, but his 1993 wrongful imprisonment claim was denied. Then, in 2008, Chester McKnight, aka “Chester the Molester,” pleaded guilty to the murders. But even though the courts accepted McKnight’s guilty

plea, Johnston still hasn’t received a cent from the state for the years he spent on death row. Decades of litigation have resulted in numerous decisions, appeals and reversals of decisions, and in June, Attorney General Mike DeWine opposed a provision in the most recent budget bill that would have given Johnston the right to seek damages.

Johnson is now 84 and in declining health. He still loves the outdoors, but he has trouble remembering much from his past. “Memory is a wonderful thing, and I sure miss mine,” Johnston said in late August at his Grove City home.

As damaging as the wrongful conviction and imprisonment have been to Johnston, this miscarriage of justice has left other victims in its wake, particularly the woman who never stopped insisting on her husband’s innocence, even as spectators in the Hocking County courthouse cheered at his guilty verdict — Johnston’s ex-wife, Sarah Brown Mora.

Sarah was let go from her job at a doctor’s office. Her car insurance was canceled. “I was ostracized in town. People didn’t want me in their stores. … I would have panic attacks. I had one where I saw a sweater that reminded me of Annette,” she said as Charm licked tears from her face. “I could just see her in that top. It was like she was still going to be there.”

After Johnston’s guilty verdict was handed down, Sarah was in shock. “I just died. I went stone cold,” she said. Over the next year, her emotions spiraled downward. She lost all hope and, along with it, her grip on reality. She began having hallucinations in which dismembered body parts floated in the air around her.

“I was in my therapist’s office, and I told him, ‘Nothing matters anymore,’” she said.

“I didn’t see any light at the end of the tunnel. I didn’t want to live without Dale.”

It felt like all of Logan was conspiring against her. She began to focus on the power brokers in town, reading conspiratorial subtexts into their meetings.

“I planned to kill 26 people that I had thought were involved in Annette being killed. There was a group of attorneys and doctors. One was running for office,” she said. “I knew where they met, and I was going to kill all of them. I had C-4, and I was going to put it all around the building. And I had several guns. One was an assault rifle. I was going to kill anybody that got out.”

Sarah relayed some of her plans to her therapist, who alerted the authorities.

They committed her to a mental hospital.

“When they admitted me, they said I was homicidal, suicidal, paranoid schizophrenic and bipolar,” she said.

Looking back, Sarah is grateful for the seven months she spent with mental health professionals who helped bring her back from the ledge. “I needed to be safe,” she said.

Around the time Sarah was released from the hospital in 1986, someone burned down her trailer, and because of court costs, there was also a lien on the Johnstons’ farm. So she moved to the remote village of Amesville in Athens County for a time, and Michelle, now legally an adult after cycling through foster families, eventually joined her. They rode horses together.

While in prison, Johnston realized his marriage to Sarah was hindering her ability to move on. “She just couldn’t get away from the case. They’d done such a number on her, and everywhere she went it was like, ‘Ohhh, Johnston…,’” said Bryan Corbett, Dale’s son-in-law. “Dale remembers saying to her, ‘I would rather have a friend who is healthy and able to maintain herself than to have a wife who commits suicide.’”

The couple divorced in 1986 but remained friends, joined forever by tragedy. “The day [Dale] was released from prison [in 1990], she was there,” Corbett said. “Neither she nor Michelle, under intense pressure to cough up something incriminating on Dale, never once doubted his innocence.”

In Amesville, Sarah realized she needed a college degree to get a job that would enable her to consistently pay her rent.

She enrolled at Hocking College and also worked as an employee in the school’s financial aid department. “It made me feel really good that someone thought I was worthy of a job,” she said.

While at Hocking, Sarah met husband David Mora and earned degrees in business administration and accounting.

After graduating, she got a job at the Gallipolis branch of Woodland Centers, a mental health agency where she worked for 17 years.

These days, Sarah attends five support groups to help manage the anger and anxiety stemming from emotional wounds that still feel fresh. “I never got to grieve,” she said. “It was many, many years later that I finally broke down. And I’m still grieving.”

Art therapy has helped, too. “It totally gets your mind off of everything because you’re so interested in what you’re making,” she said, and pointed to a kitchen table strewn with art supplies. Abstract paintings and fantastical images of horses from an adult coloring book adorn the walls.

To this day, the sight of law enforcement triggers waves of panic in her.

“Every time a cop comes near me, my stomach drops out,” she said. “I just know they’ve arrested [Dale] again and now they’re after me.”

yracuse sits on the Ohio River, which runs along the West Virginia border in southeast Ohio. The Meigs County village is about a square mile and home to fewer than 1,000 people. On one of Syracuse’s nondescript side roads, a heavily dented blue sedan with missing side mirror sits in front of a duplex with unpainted, waterstained wood siding.

Inside, 72-year-old Sarah Mora holds her lap dog, Charm, in an overstuffed chair next to her husband, David Mora, in the rental unit’s tiny living room. A TV plays on mute while Sarah, wearing a blue T-shirt emblazoned with a wolf howling at the moon, describes the fall of 1982.

Before she even had a chance to grieve over her older daughter’s brutal murder, Sarah sensed more suffering on the horizon. “You know they’re gonna come after you because you’re the stepdad,” she told Dale in the early days of the investigation.

Sure enough, Logan police interrogated Dale Johnston for 14 hours, stripping him down to his underwear and demanding that he admit to killing Schultz and his stepdaughter, according to Johnston’s current attorney, Jim Owen of Koenig & Long. (The interrogation was not recorded.) Sarah and her younger daughter, 14-year-old Michelle, were also repeatedly questioned.

“Michelle was kept for eight hours one time. Nothing to eat, no bathroom breaks,” Sarah said. “Just grilled and grilled and grilled until she finally just shut down. She couldn’t take it anymore.

They couldn’t get anything out of her. … They wanted her to say, ‘Yeah, I was there. I witnessed this, and they killed Annette, and my mom cut her up.’”

The day Johnston was arrested for the murders, authorities also removed Michelle from her home. “They said she was in danger — that I might kill her,” Sarah said. “Taking Michelle away was pretty devastating for both of us. We needed each other.” (Michelle declined to comment for this story.)

With her husband in jail, Annette in the grave and Michelle in foster care, Sarah spent her nights alone in the trailer.

She fretted over who killed Annette, but even more so she feared the police. She thought they would arrest her for being an accomplice to the murders. “I was watched all the time,” she said. “There was one par-

efore Dale Johnston was sentenced to death in 1984, he had a wife, kids and owned 53 acres with no debt. When he was released from prison in 1990, he had nothing. Other than an old pickup truck given to him by his former lawyer, Bob Suhr, he had only the clothes he wore.

Johnston went to live with his mother in the village of Ashville in Pickaway County, 20 miles south of Columbus. But it didn’t feel like a fresh start. “His verdict was not set aside with prejudice. It was just set aside, meaning [law enforcement] could have come and arrested him again at any time,” Corbett said. “He lived with the possibility of being rearrested and retried and convicted all over again.”

The cloud of Johnston’s prior conviction followed him everywhere. In the minds of many in southeast Ohio, Johnston was still guilty; he just got out on a legal technicality. And even if he didn’t do it, some still assumed he molested his stepdaughter before her death. (“Any allegation that’s been possible to disprove has been disproved, and if there was any incest, Michelle and Sarah certainly would have known about it or heard about it,” said Owen, Johnston’s attorney.

“The answer is just no.”)

The courts were no different. The state no longer had a case against Johnston because of evidence that was previously withheld from the defense, and also because of testimony that was deemed inadmissible, but that didn’t mean he was innocent. The court’s denial of his first wrongful imprisonment claim in 1993 said as much.

Like Sarah, Johnston tried to move on with his life. While in prison, he committed his life to Jesus, and after his release he found an accepting community at his church. He became head usher at First Baptist Grove City, and the church found ways for Johnston to use the carpentry skills he learned from his father to serve the congregation.

First Baptist congregant Roberta Crocker took a liking to the head usher. “He was always walking around, counting all the people in the congregation,” said Roberta, now 83. “He was a handsome dude.”

In 1998, as Roberta and Johnston’s relationship grew more serious, Roberta’s son-in-law Bryan Corbett (also a First Baptist pastor) began asking questions about the rumors he’d heard. “I heard him talking about [the maximum-security prison in] Lucasville,” Corbett said. “It dawned on me that he was not just in prison. He was on death row. So I said, ‘Tell me about it.’ And in five or 10 minutes he gave me the whole story. That’s a lot to comprehend. I’m thinking, ‘Gosh, I don’t know if I believe you or not.’ Dale’s gaunt mannerisms are a little off-putting, so some people look at him and go, ‘You just look guilty to me,’ as if that’s evidence.”

Corbett’s doubts were eventually assuaged, and he gave the relationship his blessing. Roberta and Dale were married in June of 2000 and moved to a home in Grove City in 2004. In 2008, Chester McKnight, already in prison for sex crimes, confessed to the murder of Annette Cooper and Todd Schultz. Authorities came to Johnston’s home, asking

him if he had any connection to McKnight.

Johnston didn’t, and McKnight later passed a polygraph and gave investigators information that only someone with close knowledge of the murders could have known.

Another man, Kenny Linscott, helped McKnight carve up the bodies. A 2009 Columbus Dispatch story reported that Linscott cut his right arm to the bone the night of the murders, and in Osinski’s book, he writes that Linscott made a suspicious phone call to police before the bodies were found. (Linscott was initially charged with aggravated murder but later pleaded guilty to abuse of a corpse; he was released in 2009 after spending less than a year in jail.)

Plus, there were the eyewitness accounts that would have helped to clear

Dale’s name had the prosecution turned over the statements. “That evidence shouldn’t have been ignored. It was important, and it all pointed to what turned out to be the real killers,” Corbett said. “They could have solved this case so quickly and so easily if they were really interested in the real killers.”

McKnight was sentenced to two life terms on Dec. 18, 2008. “That was a great day for Dale, because then there was no doubt. Everyone knew he was innocent,” Corbett said. “And he wasn’t guilty and then innocent. He was always innocent.”

Dale Johnston didn’t do it, but when it comes to paying him for his time on death row, McKnight’s guilty verdict is still not enough to satisfy Attorney General Mike DeWine.

“Our reading of the evidence shows there is a real possibility that the wrong man is to be executed. In such a case, [the defendant] should receive the benefit of the doubt.”

JUSTICE RALPH LOCHER

IN

the 1988 Ohio Supreme Court decision that granted Johnston a new trial, justice Ralph Locher quoted an applicable decision in a prior case, writing, “Our reading of the evidence shows there is a real possibility that the wrong man is to be executed. In such a case, [the defendant] should receive the benefit of the doubt.”

While that logic freed Dale Johnston, it failed in winning him compensation in 1993. But after the confession of McKnight, as well as a 2003 amendment to Ohio’s wrongful imprisonment statute, Johnston seemed to have another shot at a claim.

In 2003, Republican Rep. Bill Seitz of Cincinnati and Democratic Rep. Barbara Sykes of Akron collaborated on a bill to

update the wrongful imprisonment statute with an inflation-adjusted amount for compensation — about $52,000 per year.

It also extended the right to recovery not just to those who could prove innocence

by DNA or other means, but also to former prisoners who were released as a result of procedural errors.

“The idea was, there are other kinds of grave constitutional violations of one’s rights that can result in you being wrongfully imprisoned,” Seitz said. For instance, if the prosecution withheld evidence that could have prevented conviction, then a prisoner’s constitutional rights have been violated.

Johnston launched a second wrongful imprisonment claim based on procedural error at the end of 2008, and since then

answers for all of that. … [But] when Mike DeWine got involved and started squawking about this, I think some people got nervous and said, ‘OK, OK.’” Gutkoski did not respond to repeated requests for comment. DeWine also declined to comment, instead directing Alive to identical letters he sent to House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger and Senate President Larry Obhof, which outlined his opposition to the provisions. DeWine wrote that the amendment could cost the state millions in payment to “claimants who are released on any technicality.” He also lists hypothetical examples, such as a child rapist getting a conviction overturned by a procedural error.

“If this language is enacted,” DeWine wrote, “Ohio’s wrongful imprisonment statute, which already is the most liberal in the country, would become even broader and more expansive.”

Neither Seitz nor the Ohio Innocence Project is convinced by DeWine’s arguments. “Why would it cost tens of millions when it certainly didn’t cost tens of millions of dollars between 2003, when the new law came into effect, and 2014, when the Supreme Court came up with this interesting interpretation in the Mansaray case?” Seitz said. “[Opponents] say, ‘This will result in convicted criminals collecting money.’ Well, that’s the whole point, isn’t it? If the government violated their constitutional rights and introduced evidence that was illegally seized or withheld evidence that was plainly exculpatory, we don’t know if they would have been convicted, do we?”

“The way [DeWine’s letter] is written is so misleading,” Feldman said, arguing that the provision is not for “any technicality” but rather for constitutional violations. “It is very difficult to prove that a constitutional violation occurred, but a lot of times that’s the only way a wrongful conviction can be overturned. … A constitutional violation means the state did something very bad and violated your rights, and it’s the only way to hold people accountable in the system.”

Since the removal of the wrongful imprisonment language from the budget bill, the Ohio Innocence Project and Rep. Seitz have teamed up to draft a new, separate bill with more specific language that Feldman said they hope to introduce on Oct. 2, which is, not coincidentally, Wrongful Conviction Day.

arah Mora isn’t pursuing legal action for her years of suffering, but she holds out hope for Johnston. “I just wish the courts weren’t so contrary,” she said. “I think he should get a million dollars for every year he spent on death row.”

No amount of money can erase Johnston’s imprisonment or the years of finger-pointing and suspicion that he, Sarah and Michelle have endured. And nothing, of course, can bring back Annette Cooper and Todd Schultz. But his family members and legal team continue to fight.

“Dale is in the prison of Alzheimer’s disease. His memories are sinking into a past where he was forgotten by the system,” Roberta’s daughter, Angela Corbett, wrote in an August letter to the Columbus Dispatch. “He should be allowed the peace that he has fought for so hard all these years.”

Bryan Corbett and Johnston’s lawyer, Jim Owen, see an even larger principle at play. “If all elements of society can’t have confidence that our criminal justice system works pretty damn well, then how can we expect them to obey the law?” Owen said. “How can we expect them to show up for court? To talk to the police?”

Corbett said he’s a pro-police, lawand-order type of guy. “The police are our friends. I respect them. But this is a case where they zeroed in on a suspect, and the evidence wasn’t there, but they manufactured it,” he said. “This erodes confidence in our law enforcement, which is very dangerous to a society.

In cases like this, where they clearly messed up, it’s better to take the medicine and say, ‘You know what? This was a mistake. Let’s correct it. Let’s restore the confidence in our system.’”

the case has kicked around the courts in a series of decisions, appeals and reversals. Last year the Franklin County Court of Appeals ruled against Johnston for the second time. Johnston again appealed, but in June the Ohio Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal.

Right now, a 2014 Ohio Supreme Court case, Mansaray v. State, appears to be an insurmountable legal hurdle for Johnston. The decision redefined how Ohio’s courts are to interpret Seitz’s 2003 wrongful imprisonment statute. In light of Mansaray, the appeals court wrote, “Johnston’s claim for wrongful imprisonment is barred as a matter of law.”

“All of the good work we had hoped to accomplish through our 2003 effort was rendered for naught” because of the Mansaray decision, said House Majority Leader Seitz. “The Supreme Court construed our statute as being limited only to errors in procedure that occurred subsequent to sentencing. That’s certainly not what we meant. What we meant was the error in procedure had to have been discovered subsequent to your sentencing, not that it had to have occurred subsequent to your sentencing.”

“It’s a drafting error that somehow slipped by,” said Michelle Feldman of the University of Cincinnati College of Law’s Ohio Innocence Project. “Because of the bad interpretation by the Supreme Court, they’re saying that the constitutional error has to happen after somebody’s sentence. And that almost never happens in wrongful convictions.

It happens before you’re sentenced.”

Though Johnston is about out of legal options, a glimmer of hope surfaced this spring when Seitz introduced an amendment to the state’s budget bill that would counteract Mansaray. But the wording was removed from the bill at the last minute after Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Brian Gutkoski, who represented the state in the Mansaray case, voiced opposition to the provision, and his concerns made their way to the office of Attorney General DeWine, who’s currently campaigning to fill the shoes of outgoing Gov. John Kasich. “[Gutkoski] started to raise holy hell, claiming this would result in tens of millions of dollars of expense to the state and [saying], ‘This is terrible. Convicted rapists and criminals would go free and collect money,’” Seitz said. “We had

DACA.” Currently, the President is in talks with Democratic leaders about supporting the “DREAM Act,” which would grant a conditional green card to DACA recipients. (The act would be paired with plans for increased border security.)

Trump’s original announcement drew the ire of both Democrats and Republicans, including Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

And Del Valle’s parents encouraged him to pursue education beyond high school. “[For] a lot of Latino families, sometimes the mentality might be after high school, you’re done,” Del Valle said. “My mom always tried to change that for me.”

Along with DACA, Del Valle credits an Ohio State mentorship program, Latinx Space for Enrichment and Research (LASER), with preparing him for college while he was in high school.

Through LASER, Del Valle met regularly with college students for help with academics and advice regarding higher education or life in general.

“He was a great kid,” said Mitch Anderskow, one of Del Valle’s mentors. “[He] definitely had a passion to try to learn and challenge himself because from his junior year to his senior year, he started taking harder classes.” “[Javier]’s a dreamer like all of our young Latinx students,” said LASER founder and OSU professor Frederick Luis Aldama, who also explained how challenging it can be for immigrant students to excel in school while living in constant fear of deportation. “Imagine what kind of effort and hard work and even imagination is required to keep yourself going with the idea of getting a degree. … [Javier]’s close to finishing [school] and that’s remarkable.”

After graduation, Del Valle, who is passionate about cars, said he’d like to help the Latino community through working in the automotive industry.

“A lot of Latino families don’t have transportation; some of them may not be able to afford a car,” he said. “So I’ve been thinking about … [reducing costs] for Latino families that have a hard time coming to the country.”

And he rejects the arguments made by officials like Attorney General Jeff Session, who stated that DACA has “denied jobs to hundreds of thousands of Americans by allowing those same jobs to go to illegal aliens.”

“We’re not really taking their jobs,” Del Valle said. “We’re just taking jobs they don’t want to do.”

“I’m not sure why people single us out,” he continued. “We’re really no different from them. I really would like to see the Latino community move forward and most students go to school [and] have a broader perspective on life.”

“They ought to have permanent resident status,” Gov. Kasich said of the DACA recipients, aka “Dreamers,” on “CBS This Morning.” “If the Dreamers want to go somewhere and live, come to Ohio. We want all the immigrants to come to Ohio because we know how much they contribute to America.”

While 20-year-old DACA recipient Javier Del Valle appreciated the governor’s statement, he still had concerns about the future.

“I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s cool, but what about school?’” said Del Valle, who is taking classes at Columbus State during a semester off from Ohio State, where he hopes to graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering. “Most of the Dreamers want to go to school. … Once our DACA expires we’re not allowed to go back to school here.”

In response to Trump’s DACA decision, OSU president Michael Drake immediately reached out to Rep. Joyce Beatty.

“I … urge you and your colleagues to use this opportunity to find a bipartisan solution that will, at a minimum, codify the existing DACA policy into law,” he wrote.

Eligibility for college is just one of the advantages of the DACA policy, which was established by President Obama in 2012 and benefits approximately 800,000 individuals who arrived to the U.S. illegally as minors. Recipients are granted a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and eligibility for a work permit.

“It gives you a taste of what citizenship is,” Del Valle said. “You … have a little bit more of a safe feeling [and] a little bit more reassurance.”

“When I got my driver’s license, I felt so confident because … if I get pulled over, I can be like, ‘Boom, look what I got. Just give me a ticket and I’ll go,’” he continued. “It was like a huge boost of self-confidence.”

Security was more elusive for Del Valle during his childhood in Mexico City.

“You’re running away from organized crime,” Del Valle explained. “You want to be safe, you want your family to be safe [and] you want to know that there’s a tomorrow.”

As a result, when Del Valle was six years old, his parents took him and his sister to the U.S., and settled in Dublin, Ohio, in search of a better future.

“It was really hard, especially for my parents because they didn’t know the language,” Del Valle said. But today, the family

A newborn’s unfinished brain has nearly 100 billion neurons, ready to be developed and connected.

“All need to build connections with each other. It happens through experiences. No experience, no connections,” explained Laura Justice, distinguished professor of educational psychology at Ohio State University, and editor-inchief of Early Childhood Research Quarterly.

Justice is on the front lines of a global effort to educate citizens, elected officials and philanthropists on the compelling research on children’s brains, and the resulting urgency to provide highquality, universal preschool opportunities.

After six years, Justice said, the brain begins to prune the undeveloped neural connections.

Deprived of cognitively stimulating experiences, a child’s intellectual potential is compromised. Kids who enter kindergarten behind spend their lives trying to catch up.

The United States lags other nations in this effort, and Ohio is a laggard among the states.

On the morning of Sept. 9, Justice delivered this message to 30 rapt listeners at the J. Ashburn Jr. Youth Center on the Hilltop, members of the Hilltop Early Learning Partnership, a mayoral task force.

In his Feb. 23 State of the City speech, Mayor Andrew Ginther announced a goal of doubling the number of Hilltop children enrolled in quality pre-K by 2020.

“In the Hilltop, fewer children are enrolled in quality pre-kindergarten than anywhere else in the city,” he said.

By December, the task force will issue recommendations, a first step toward the mayor’s long-term goal of providing pre-K to every 4-year-old in Columbus – an estimated 11,266 kids.

Barriers to progress are high. Citizens must understand the stakes.

Then they must be persuaded to invest. Quality pre-K is expensive.

The median cost of private preschool tuition in Franklin County is $9,400 per year. A moderate quality program costs more than $8,000. High-quality programs (five-star in state ratings) approach $14,000.

To be eligible for limited state funding, pre-K programs must be

registered by 2020, and earn at least a three-star rating by 2025.

Among Ohio cities, Cincinnati and Dayton are at the forefront of persuading voters to invest in pre-K. In November 2016, voters in the Cincinnati Public School District approved (62-38) a 7.93-mill, five-year property tax levy to generate $48 million per year, with $15 million allocated for pre-K to be managed by United Way of Greater Cincinnati.

In the same election, Dayton voters approved (56-44) boosting the city income tax from 2.25 to 2.5 percent, for eight years.

The levy is estimated to generate $11 million annually, with about $4 million dedicated for pre-K. Among the states, Georgia boasts the nation’s first universal pre-K program — funded entirely by the state lottery.

Sometime next year, Columbus will be debating whether, and how, to offer universal pre-K to every 4-year-old.

South African wine Since my husband and I lived in Durban for four years, we grew attached to the wineries and vineyards of the beautiful Cape area. We joined a South African wine club when we returned to the U.S., and revel in receiving our shipment every quarter.

The flavors inspire our cooking too, as it’s so fun to pair each bottle with an interesting new recipe.

Marcella’s I’m pretty much in love with all kinds of food, and Columbus has amazing offerings! But you can’t beat an excellent Italian eatery with an intimate and trendy vibe. Twinkling lights and wine bottles line the walls and the ambience is cozy and fun, with hearty authentic fare. My husband and I were blown away when we visited for the first time, and it never disappoints.

Zula, our dog I spend a lot of time working at home from our Downtown apartment, so hanging out with and walking our sweet, 1-year-old black Lab/pit mix, Zula, is a highlight of my day.

Sometimes I wander down to the water near Bicentennial Park, run along the path and make it to the fountains that Zula loves to play in.

Pilates and running I try my best to stay active despite my more sedentary job requirements, and I love the feeling of finding a rhythm with exercise. I used to spin, and would love to continue that, but right now I find balance in core training and cardio. It’s really hard to make progress, but when I do, it’s incredibly rewarding! 100s is my personal villain.

hen it’s time to make a life change, Natalie Mering rarely has to search for some obscure sign. Rather, the universe has a way of signaling to the musician in all caps.

Before pivoting to a more stately, manicured sound, Mering, who records and performs as Weyes Blood, was a fixture on the noise-rock scene. Or at least she was until she was performing at the International Noise Conference in Philadelphia and a pair of speakers caught fire, overtaxed by the excessive volume.

“It felt like a real sign I wasn’t doing the right thing,” she said, and laughed.

A second cosmic prodding occurred during a DIY show in Baltimore when Mering, at the urging of friends, disrupted a poker game that had broken out in the middle of the venue. “There was a show, and then there were four people gambling at a poker table in the middle of it,” she explained. In retaliation, the gamers sabotaged Mering’s evening set, playing a recording of The Velvet Underground & Nico until the volume completely drowned out her performance.

“That was such a blow for me at the time because the number one comparison I’d get was to Nico. It was like a big slap in the face, and nobody had my back. My friends were too scared to do anything about it … so for the most part I was like, ‘Wow. I’m pretty sure no one gives a fuck,’” said Mering, who, following the 2014 incident, left Baltimore for New York City. “I decided it was maybe time to leave the DIY/noise scene where there are a lot of pranksters and people who are kind of spiteful and weird and where the hierarchies were very pronounced and go to a maybe less-interesting but more-diffuse indie-rock scene where people play out of real PA systems and try to get signed to labels.”

This includes smartphone technology, which has managed to connect the world while somehow furthering the divide (see the common site of two people in a room, each staring at a small screen) — a development Mering still wrestles with, citing both an uber-productive month she spent living without a phone in 2016 (she finally caved when her label purchased her a phone after having difficulty reaching her) and the day-to-day necessity of a device she described as part of “the fabric of society.”

“Talking about it is important because it’s changing the way we think and it’s changing the way we function,” Mering said. “Ultimately, it’s a pretty dangerous tool for self-abuse. You can indulge narcissistic tendencies on Instagram — not that everybody does, but some might — and it feeds the non-existence of boredom, which I think is so essential for art and coming up with creative ideas.

Long-form concentration is what you need to really get things done, and that’s constantly broken apart by notifications or this desire to get on there and see what everybody is talking about.”

At this point in the conversation, Mering’s phone dropped out — another sign from the universe? — and after reconnecting, she conceded that abandoning the tech altogether was unlikely. “We’re stuck with it, and I wouldn’t want to be a source of frustration for other people constantly asking to borrow a phone,” she said.

But that doesn’t mean she’ll hesitate to set it aside from time to time, giving herself at least a little space to consider life’s big questions, such as humankind’s finite nature.

“A lot of love songs now are about the apocalypse, like, (sings) ‘It’s our last chance to dance!’” Mering said. “I don’t even think that’s a real song, but it’s in the air, and I think we all need to be processing this concept that our time is sensitive. It’s a fragile existence.”

Now, Mering does both. The musician’s latest, Front Row Seat to Earth, from 2016, was released on Brooklynbased Mexican Summer, and she’s currently touring theaters opening for Father John Misty. (The two visit Palace Theatre for a concert on Saturday, Sept. 23.)

Rather than a reinvention, however, Mering describes Front Row Seat and its 2014 predecessor, The Innocents, as a return to her musical roots, having started in high school as a folk-leaning singer-songwriter, emulating the likes of Devendra Banhart and Cat Power. “After a bout with noise music and making more powerful, aggressive statements, I felt like I could return to that with my own voice,” Mering said.

While more at home in her current guise, Mering’s music remains deeply unsettled, with songs centered on unrequited love, the feeling of being torn between wanting independence and craving human connection and growing fears for an increasingly uncertain future. “Going to see end of days,” she sings at the onset of the delicate “Generation Why,” sounding like a woman at peace with the coming apocalypse.

“I think people are scared about climate change. I think people are scared about the political environment. I think people are scared about how different it’s getting for millennials and how much times have changed,” Mering said. “We’re still living under the baby boomers’ ideologies as they’re kind of dying out, and I think that’s a freaky thing because what they’ve left behind is pretty insane for a lot of people to comprehend, especially in America.”

This comprehension, Mering believes, informed the rise of the millennialapproved saying, “YOLO” (you only live once), which she recites throughout “Generation Why,” elongating each letter until the abbreviation sounds like some gorgeous, Gothic chant.

“I think the meaning of ‘you only live once’ is we’ve seen none of these things are permanent. Mortgages fail. Marriages fail. Truth has failed during this presidency. The idea of people being held accountable for their actions has failed,” Mering said. “Then it was like, ‘Yeah, we might as well make the most of whatever this is.’ That’s why I think so many millennials get dogs. They’re maybe scared

Los Angeles musician Sonia Kreitzer, who records under the name Doe Paoro, was in London on election night in November. She stayed up all night checking her phone for news on the results, and in the morning she headed to the recording studio for a previously booked session.

“It was super strange to be out of the States for that experience,” Paoro said recently by phone. “When I got to the studio, there were all these people who understood, because they just went through Brexit.

Actually Liam Gallagher from Oasis was there. It was so weird. We were

all talking about it. … Everybody was like, ‘How are you doing?’”

Frankly, she’d been better, and as she prepared to record a song she’d written a year prior, it didn’t feel right. “[The song] was about the fallout of a relationship, and I went to sing, and I was like, ‘No,’” she said.

“It didn’t feel resonant at that point.

It felt dated or something in that moment. ... It was one of those crazy things where I was like, ‘I need to rewrite this right now,’ and it actually came pretty naturally, since I was super sleep-deprived and in that weird state of inspiration. I just wrote a bunch of lyrics on the spot.”

“A thick haze hangs over yesterday/We sleepwalk through a haze — bruised faith,” Paoro sings to open “Fading Into Black,” which she released as a standalone single

last month. Soft piano accompanies Paoro’s smoky voice in the verses before she unleashes a soulful, fullthroated chorus about shaking and breaking an hourglass to turn back time, but finding she can’t go back.

It felt good to let anger into her music, which is something Paoro said she didn’t do on her 2015 record, the gorgeous and moody After (Anti-). “I honestly feel a little bit self-conscious about it, but in the past, [the music] has been a lot more driven by sadness and that side of the spectrum — regret and self-blaming,” she said. “But with this new consciousness of things that have happened in the last two or three years as I’ve been working on this [new] record — both on the personal and cultural collective consciousness level — there are a lot of things that I feel angry about. And that feels oddly empowering after feeling sad for so long.”

Paoro recorded After at Justin Vernon of Bon Iver’s April Base studio in Wisconsin, and while the album’s sonic layers provided a thrilling backdrop to Paoro’s words, the arrangements posed challenges onstage.

“Part of touring on After so much was realizing I couldn’t replicate all the super-lush, orchestral aspects of it live,” said Paoro, who visits Rumba Cafe with Son Little on Friday, Sept.

22. “I went into this record being like, OK, I want to be able to recreate everything live.”

Paoro described her forthcoming album, which is finished but doesn’t have a release date quite yet, as a coming-of-age record.

“We don’t talk about coming of age in terms of your 30s. We talk about it in terms of teenage years,” she said. “But I do feel like I’ve had a second coming of age in my 30s — stepping into my personal power and finding my voice in a clear way.”

For more than a decade, Pete Faust and Mary Alice Hamnett embraced the Electric Grandmother as an outlet for goofball, avant-electro songs inspired by pop culture — largely film and TV. But in 2015, following a dispiriting concert in Philadelphia, the married couple started to question their desire to continue making music in the same form, if at all.

“It was one of those things where we got drunk beforehand and we were all tired and questioning why we were even doing it. It felt like the band was at a crossroads,” said Faust, who spoke with Hamnett from the couple’s home in Washington, D.C., where they moved in 2011 following a decade in Columbus. “The night of the show we realized we were both bored and shiftless with what we’d been doing for the past however many years.”

“At this point, we were already starting to write another album in the same format, with just a bunch of random songs about nostalgic concepts … and we were struggling to find ideas,” Hamnett said. “On The Bodyguard Soundtrack, [from 2015], we wrote a song about the movie ‘Mr. Mom,’ which came out in like 1982 and we both saw for the first time shortly before the album came out. It was like, ‘OK, here’s a song.’ But it wasn’t anything we cared about.”

Rather than calling it quits on Electric Grandmother, which developed as a Faust solo project in 2004 and has since evolved into a duo with Hamnett contributing vocals and live projection in concert (as well as functioning as a vital sounding board), the musicians started brainstorming concepts to help shake free of their creative rut while maintaining a similarly oddball spirit.

The album that emerged from this Philly road trip, Cancelled, which will be the centerpiece of a release show at Big Room Bar on Saturday, Sept. 23, is still informed by television, though it occupies a fantasy world rather than reveling in plot points from old episodes of “Alf” or “Family Ties,” telling the story of a man who gradually loses his mind after his favorite cop drama is pulled off the airwaves.

“It’s an absurdist story … but it’s also a universal story about loss and losing your identity,” Hamnett said.

For Faust, the writing process served as therapy, helping him cope with a depression that has been a part of his existence since he was in a childhood car accident — an event that left the musician with lingering post-traumatic stress disorder that was only recently diagnosed.

While Los Angeles punk band X has maintained a relatively active touring presence, it hasn’t released a full-length studio album since Hey Zeus! surfaced in 1993. (The band did release a two-track, digital-only Christmas EP, Merry Xmas from X, in 2009.)

In a 2016 interview with Denver’s Westword, bassist/

singer John Doe, who has anchored X with ex-spouse/vocalist Exene Cervenka since its 1977 inception, hinted at “huge plans” to coincide with the band’s 40th anniversary, which it’s in the midst of celebrating.

These plans have so far consisted of a couple legs of touring, including a stop at Skully’s Music-Diner on Wednesday, Sept. 27, but at this point it seems a new album might not

A

riot is not a festival,” intoned Saul Williams during an early Friday spoken-word set that served as a de facto invocation speech for Riot Fest 2017 in Chicago.

Williams was the first of some 40-plus acts I scoped over the weekend. Riot Fest continues to be, in my book, the best-curated music festival in the country, a three-day excursion through your concert bucket list.

There are no flavor-of-themonth bookings at Riot Fest.

Before 5 p.m. on the first day, I’d already checked off a couple of legends in X and Buzzcocks, both establishing that not only is punk not dead, it’s aged pretty well.

And with a lineup full of more can’t-miss acts than you possibly can’t-miss, Riot Fest was also blessed with an open and intuitive layout with side-by-side main stages and additional stages that were easy to find (although some sound bleed

was an issue at times).

I watched a rowdy crowd of Action Bronson fans answering the question, “Who brings a cookbook to a music festival?” before settling in for a Friday evening slate of acts right out of my dreams.

Death From Above drummer/singer Sebastien Grainger marveled at the evening lineup during his band’s own sharp set (bolstered by tunes from DFA’s new album Outrage! Is Now, which adds more range to the two-piece’s aural arsenal).

“New Order? Sure. Ministry?

OK, why not? That’s a good sauce,” Grainger said, furthering his metaphor by adding, “We’re the oregano. And then the Parmesan on top? That’s Nine Inch Nails.”

That sauce was indeed a treat right in my musical wheelhouse.

I don’t know if we can thank Donald Trump, but Chicago’s own industrial godfather Al Jourgensen and Ministry delivered the kind of aggressively crushing set I haven’t seen from them in a long time. A brutal finish of early tracks (“N.W.O.,” “Thieves,” “Just One Fix,” “So What”) basically ensured that their upcoming Columbus stop is a must-see.

With a dazzling light show and an array of legendary music, New Order effectively turned the park into a dance club with a set that made the nostalgia seem very present, including a cover of a tune by the band from which they formed.

“Love Will Tear Us Apart” being played under a banner of “Joy Division forever” will get the feelings going.

Friday headliner Nine Inch Nails operated with less flair than its usual stage shows, but Trent Reznor and company are still somehow underrated as a next-level live act. I’ve seen them enough times that I was most excited for deeper cuts (dusting off “Something I Can Never Have”) and new tracks (the live debut of “The Background World” from the new Add Violence EP). Pray to your deity of choice that we get a full NIN tour.

Saturday started as strong as Friday ended with UK duo Slaves melting faces in what was already a hot Chicago day by noon. The weirdest and possibly most wonderful one-two punch of the weekend was to come.

Peaches’ mainstage set was the talk of anyone who saw it,

which tends to happen when you come out on stage wearing vulva headgear. Her brand of sexy IDGAF electro is infectious as hell, and you weren’t likely to find a better performer.

To follow that up with Dead Cross, a metal super group featuring both Mike Patton and ex-Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, was a weird mix. But if you fell in that Venn diagram overlap, it was sublime.

Energy levels took a surprising dip with a couple of acts that showed their age, as D.C. hardcore pioneers Bad Brains and the dirty-black crooning of Danzig both underwhelmed. With seemingly half the park crowding to catch Wu-Tang Clan, I left before the full crew was even onstage, opting for a little At the Drive-In leading into a perfectly slinky and groovy Queens of the Stone Age set.

If I’ve learned one lesson from Riot Fest 2017, it’s the reality of option paralysis. On Sunday, I finally opted to let go of my FOMO and dig in for some full sets instead of doing it buffet style. I had to put out of my head some of the sets I was missing, including Dinosaur Jr., GWAR, Prophets of Rage, Paramore, Andrew W.K. and, yes, Sunday headliner Jawbreaker.

Instead I focused on two sets just for me, watching the always entrancing TV on the Radio put on a show that was somehow energetic and soothing at the same time. Then I settled in for a great spot up front for one of my own bucket list acts. I know a lot of people were waiting two decades for a chance to see Jawbreaker, but I’ve waited one to see M.I.A. I have no regrets.

It’s my third trek to Chicago in four years for Riot Fest, and I don’t see how they’ll top this to get me back next year … but they always do.

In

past years, Abel Tesfaye largely operated in the shadows, selfreleasing mixtapes littered with murky, emotionally distant songs while remaining largely off public radar. Now, with a pair of hit albums and a string of chart-topping hits, the Canadian singer and songwriter, who records and performs as the Weeknd, is something of a house-

hold name, capable of filling arenas for concerts, as he did at the Schottenstein Center on a recentTuesday.

Considering the shift, it’s appropriate Tesfaye kicked off his 80-minute performance beneath a spotlight, a glowing tractor beam drawing the musician up from a trap door beneath the stage as a tight, three-piece band locked into the title track from his most recent fulllength, Starboy, released late last year.

Where early albums were dark and moody, littered with tales of drug-fueled, anonymous sex, Starboy has a grander, more expansive, mainstream sound befitting the Weeknd’s new arena stomping grounds.

Of course, Tesfaye hasn’t completely abandoned the reckless lecher at his core, as he admitted on “Reminder.” “I just won a new award for a kids’ show/Talking about her face humming off a bag of blow,” he crooned, ref-

erencing his breakout hit, “Can’t Feel My Face.” “I’m like, ‘Goddamn, bitch, I am not a Teen Choice/ Goddamn, bitch, I am not a bleach boy.’” A few beats later, in the same song, he tossed off a casually sexist, arguably racist remark that doubled down on this admitted impurity: “Got a sweet Asian chick, she go low mane (mein),” which, ick.

It helps somewhat that Tesfaye delivers even his most debased, sour lyrics in a sweet, pliable tenor,

drawing listeners close while a string of insecure, promiscuous characters searches for release in some combination of chemicals and the “Kama Sutra.” “Let me see that ass,” he cooed on “Wicked Games,” an early song he remastered and rendered in widescreen here, later adding, “bring the drugs, baby, I could bring my pain.” On the more recent and less compelling “Party Monster,” he appeared to pick up action the following morning. “Woke up by a girl,” he sang atop a synth-heavy beat that ambled along in a drugaddled stupor. “I don’t even know her name.”

At times, Tesfaye embodied characters content to let these vices win out.

“I might not make it,” he offered amid the steamy, R&B-tinged “Might Not,” showing little interest in slowing down. On “Can’t Feel My Face,” a buoyant, infectious pop gem, he belted the line “she’ll be the death of me” with the verve of a man joyously sliding headfirst into the grave.

With Starboy, Tesfaye does find himself safely ensconced in a new income tax bracket (the title track name-drops the Bentley Mulsanne, a highend auto with a base price north of $360,000), and the high-tech stage set reflected this new reality.

The musician spent a bulk of the concert in the middle of a long, obelisk-shaped catwalk that stretched 50 yards into the audience. Above him hung a geometric spaceship that appeared modeled on a classic paper plane, rimmed with lights

and covered with panels that doubled as video screens. One moment, the craft would hover above Tesfaye, painting him in red and blue hues, and the next it would tilt at a 45-degree angle, as though threatening to take off and blast its way through the arena’s roof.

Though a singular figure in the modern pop world, Tesfaye, who trimmed his once-trademark, Basquiatesque locks in favor of a closer-cropped ’do more reminiscent of “Seinfeld’s” Kramer, peppered his set with musical nods to the Motown era (the steamy “Earned It”), R. Kelly (“Angel,” a stripped-down, disarmingly straightforward ballad), Micheal Jackson (“In the Night” clearly inherited DNA from “Billie Jean”) and even Tears for Fears (“Secrets” briefly ducked beneath “Pale Shelter”).

Tesfaye also called upon the occasional helping hand, including rapper Nav, who opened the concert and returned to chip in a verse on by-the-numbers rags-to-riches tale “Some Way,” and the Daft Punk robots, who, while not present in the arena, assisted in crafting the shimmering “I Feel It Coming.”

The song, which closed out the main set, found Tesfaye embodying a more sympathetic character, consoling a woman left shattered by a failed romance. “You don’t have to run,” he sang. “I know what you’ve been through.” In part, one would estimate based on everything that landed before it, because his kind has so often been the cause of this pain.

While Katy Perry’s attempt at showing a more serious side of herself on new album Witness is admirable, much of the buzz about the record has more to do with her personal transformation than the actual songs, which are pretty meh. Still, Witness hit No. 1 on the charts, and Perry has enough big hits and a penchant for over-the-top stage productions that, even if the Witness material isn’t necessarily a highlight, there may be enough pop hooks and eye candy to make this rescheduled show worthwhile. (Think twice)

BOl aWeng: ‘the JOurney OF hOpe’

ol Aweng was 6 years old when he was separated from his family. What he expected to be a couple hours of hiding from the fighting as

soldiers attacked his village in the Darfur region of Sudan ended up being just the beginning of a journey that would test the boy’s endurance, wits and will to survive.

These events would also

serve as a catalyst for Aweng’s art-making. From childhood stick figures drawn in the unsheltered bush through the paintings he crafts as an adult (some of which are on exhibit at Otterbein University’s

Miller Gallery as “The Journey of Hope: Stories from Sudan to Columbus” through Nov. 21), Aweng’s art has always been a way to both process and share the harrowing journey of one of Sudan’s “lost boys.”

“The reason I’m here is to share my story with people,” Aweng said in an interview inside Miller Gallery. “I’m here.

I’m part of it. I witnessed it. I faced all the challenges that go with it.”

Gesturing to one of his paintings hanging on the wall, he calls attention to his use of shadow.

“I’m here to reveal all these things that were in the shadow.

[To tell] what was the level of that suffering … to have no permanent place to live,” he said.

the refugees were left with few choices, and this time their journey took them to Kenya. Only 16,000 of the 35,000 from his camp survived the trek.

Aweng had lived for 10 years in the refugee camp in Kenya when he was selected for resettlement in the United States. He lived in Nashville for five years before coming to Columbus to study fine art at Ohio State University.

“My journey continues in Nashville, and now in Columbus,” said Aweng, who is now married and has four children.

He returned to what is now South Sudan in 2007, where he learned that his family had survived its own trials and had eventually returned to their village.

“I felt like I needed to return and find out what happened to them. It was not easy. We were happy to see each other, but when we sat down to share some stories we were so sad hearing these terrible stories we decided not to talk about it,” Aweng said. “I knew this was my dad and my mom, but we [had] a very big gap with what was lost this whole time. I decided it was best to stay in [the U.S.] where I can make money to help support them.”

Since then, Aweng has helped build and open a medical clinic in his home village. In addition to making art, Aweng does fundraising, and recently published a book, “The Journey of Hope,” that tells his story and features his art.

Aweng said his refugee story is unique, but it is still the story of all refugees.

“Mostly people who left [nations devastated by war] have very similar stories that they don’t always share.

They are very painful,” he said. “You left and maybe you lost family members, or you recall that moment when you lost people. Some people go without food or cross oceans to try to survive. … The same thing that happened to me. I lost friends to lions, to poisoned food, to dehydration.

I am a voice for those who survived, for people to understand my story so they can understand the story of the people who are still suffering.”

At age 6, Aweng couldn’t even conceive of, let alone understand, that, when the bloody and devastating decade-long civil war in Sudan found its way to his village in 1987, it would be 20 years before he would see his family again.

“What I remember was, in my village, we had lot of animals, and I was taking care of the cows. When government soldiers came to the village, I didn’t know what was going on. That’s when I had to run. They were coming with tanks, bombing from air and [with] ground troops.

Every time when I looked back at my village, what I see is my village is burning, and sounds of shooting and fighting and gunfire, and the smoke is covering everything, flames everywhere,” Aweng said.

“I was on my own, so I just kept moving away from my village still hoping that I would go back and find my family, but all that time there was no way of going back.

[Running] away is the only choice you have. If you are lucky, [you] reach a safe place, but many people lost their lives.”

As fighting continued to spread, Aweng, who had joined a group of about 15 other new refugees, knew he had to keep walking. Exhaustion, hunger, dehydration, animal attacks and a lack of knowledge about safe and unsafe foods to eat in the wild were some of the few challenges faced by the walkers. These all tested one’s will to live, Aweng said.

“During the journey, there was nothing easy. Many people would just give up, feel like this is too much. ‘I can’t do it,’ so they would just sit down and they never get up,” he said. Aweng said an older boy kept him from losing heart, providing encouragement and, when necessary, bribery.

Eight weeks later, the growing number of Sudanese refugees crossed the border into Ethiopia, where they were told by United Nations representatives they would be safe. For four years, 35,000 refugees lived in this makeshift camp they had to build largely themselves. “We had to come together as a group and share duties and do whatever possible to live. No matter how young we were we had to do something,” Aweng said.

However, Ethiopia’s own internal strife forced the abandonment of the camp, and the refugees were ordered back into Sudan. With war still raging in their homeland, Aweng and the rest of

You get the sense Scott Woods discusses his 2015 essay “Stephen King’s Magical Negroes,” written for Union Station magazine, with a bit of disappointment.

The essay, which Woods has updated and will present segments of in a lecture at Kafe Kerouac on Thursday, Sept.

28, examines King’s predisposition for using black characters in narrowly defined fashion some might construe as racist.

“I was raised on Stephen King,” Woods said in a recent phone interview.

“I devoured King as a teen.

I don’t remember the book exactly, but I remember… a point where I was like, ‘Does he use the n-word in everything?’ That was my first step into the issue.

That was before I got into the ‘magical negro’ thing.

It got to the point where I said, ‘I don’t think this is a characterization any more.

This is a problem.’”

The magical negro is a literary trope, Woods said, where black characters are often imbued with supernatural abilities, noting King created “the most sterling example” in John Coffey from “The Green Mile.”

“It’s as if [King] said, ‘Oh, you think I have a problem?” Woods said.

“I’ll show you what a problem is.’”

Woods said he doesn’t require realistic depictions of black characters in works of fiction. (The

notion of whether white writers can realistically render non-white characters is a separate topic, Woods, said, and one that he hopes to delve into more in the future.) But that King, perhaps the most famous living writer, seems to have issues with race is something Woods, who maintains he’s still a fan, can’t ignore.

“If a black person shows up in a King novel they stand a 50 percent chance of possessing a supernatural ability,” Woods wrote in his essay for Union Station. “Yet there is a 99 percent chance that whatever black character appears, be they magical or not, their presence will serve only to enhance, advance, save or develop white characters.”

“I don’t need you to create realistic black characters. I need you to create a black character that doesn’t make me hate myself, or make people believe that’s how black people are,” Woods said.

“If you lived in 1920, when we were desperate for any cultural representation, it’s fine. But in 2017, it doesn’t hold up. We can do better than this. He’s better than this. But his reality may not allow for that,” Woods continued.

“That he’s been doing this for 70 years is straight madness. … At some point it becomes, ‘Are you creating offensive art or are you just offensive?’”

On the surface, programming an intimate, modern, English-language opera by a lesser-known (for opera, anyway) composer might seem a risk. And, sure, Benjamin Britten’s “The Turn of the Screw,” which tells the spooky story of a new domestic employee at a remote English mansion, is a departure from grand Italian or French opera. But… “Amazing singing, beautiful costumes, a magnificent set. … It’s a perfect introduction into what [people] should expect from opera,” said Opera Columbus Artistic Director Peggy Kriha Dye.

Comic, graphic novel and zine publisher Koyama Press will have three of its artists in Columbus for a reading and meet-and-greet at Kafe Kerouac on Friday, Sept. 22.

The Toronto-based press marked its 10th anniversary earlier this year and “remain(s) dedicated to publishing a lot of emerging artists,” founder Annie Koyama said.

“My hopes for the press evolved organically over the years,” Koyama said. “It’s heartening to see the growth and increased general interest in

comics and graphic novels, and we are certainly happy to see our books sold into the book market as well as in comic stores.”

Patrick Kyle, Noel Freibert and Connor Willumsen will read and share art from their latest offerings.

Koyama called Willumsen’s “AntiGone,” “a quixotic and trippy trip through a dreamscape,” and said that Freibert’s “Old Ground,” “is where the denizens of ‘Pee-Wee’s Playhouse’ would bury bodies.” Kyle’s third Koyama work, “Everywhere Disappeared,” “finds familiar icons like Dracula and Archie put through [his] prismatic mind,” Koyama said.

Just one week into its theatrical run, “Mother!” is already proving to be one of the most polarizing movies of the year.

The latest film from Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan,” “Requiem for a Dream”) is a movie sure to elicit love-itor-hate-it reactions.

For starters, despite its star power and surprising wide release, you should really know what you’re getting into. This is not a mainstream horror-thriller. It’s a weird and deeply allegorical experimental film.

So is “Mother!” right for you? Read on to find out. I promise I won’t spoil the goods.

The mother of the title (Jennifer Lawrence) lives in a large country house with her husband (Javier Bardem), a famed writer working on his next piece.

When an uninvited guest (Ed Harris) arrives, their seemingly tranquil life takes a slow and sinister turn.

Is that enough plot for you? Because it’s all I’m giving you.

Obviously some people are going to walk out of “Mother!” asking, “What the hell did I just watch?” Some may walk out before it’s even over.

But this isn’t just a pretentious and snobby art-house horror movie that you either like or you get accused of “not getting.” It’s actually some very slick and effective filmmaking, albeit in a movie where the audience has to accept that the narrative will rarely be tidy.

Aronofsky is certainly no stranger to self-indulgence as a director. I mean, look, there’s a certain level of pretense inherent when you stylize your movie title all lowercase with an exclamation mark at the end.

And, yes, there’s some real top-level allegory going on here, but it’s not necessary that you unravel all the layers to enjoy the movie.

What is necessary is that you must be OK with not always understanding what is happening or why. This movie is unsettling in its weirdness and operates more on deep anxiety than horror. Then it goes absolutely bonkers.

Lawrence gives a stellar performance as the person dealing with all manner of strange and unsettling behavior from others. Much of the film is basically gaslighting her character … and the audience. Bardem, Harris and a scene-stealing Michelle Pfeiffer also shine.

And now that I’ve allowed myself to read up on some of the symbolism and themes that are at play here, I want to see it again. It’s not for everyone, but it’s definitely for me, and ranks as one of the year’s most unique experiences. Just check your expectations.

The trailer for the third installment, which includes vocal contributions from Jackie Chan, Fred Armisen and a smattering of “Silicon Valley” actors (Kumail Nanjiani, Zach Woods), makes it appear as though the concept is wearing thin.

“bAttle oF the sexes” This biographical sports comedy is loosely based on real-life 1973 events, when Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) and Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) squared off in a man v. woman tennis match.

“stronger” The real-life drama based on the Boston Marathon bombing wrestles more with the aftermath, following the recovery of Jeff Bauman (Jake Gyllenhaal) in the months after the #BostonStrong hashtag faded from public view. David Gordon Green (“All the Real Girls,” uh, “Your Highness”) directs.

“rebel in the rye” If reviews are to be trusted, you’re better off curling up with a good book than catching this retelling of the life of reclusive writer J.D. Salinger, which is currently tracking at 31 percent (out of 100) on Rotten Tomatoes.

Homestead Springs Ohio Trout and Trillium Martini

hen Alana’s Food and Wine closed earlier this year after a run of nearly two decades, it was a withering loss, especially for University District locavores. Fortunately for such fine diners, a strong successor called Trillium Kitchen & Patio has sprouted up on the same grounds as Alana’s.

Trillium Kitchen & Patio is named for the Ohio state flower, the celebrated patio it retained from its predecessor and its sharp kitchen crew, which is led by talented chef and co-owner Bradley Balch, formerly of The Sycamore (which Balch still co-owns). Not mentioned in Trillium’s official title: A dramatically remodeled interior that is sleek, bright, modern and awash in brown wood, which starkly plays off white paint and tile.

The crisp look extends to a prominent bar.

There, sophisticated cocktails ($10) are created, such as the (currently on hiatus) wine-topped Jefe Sour, a stout-yet-refreshing two-toned twist on the whiskey sour made with Watershed bourbon.

For something even stiffer, try the lemon-scented Ohio Vesper shaken with Cocchi Americano, plus Watershed vodka and Four Peel gin. A reasonably priced, solid wine selection is offered, too.

Balch’s cuisine is well-described on Trillium’s website, which cites global influences plus a focus on high-quality, seasonal ingredients and seafood. His menu is compact, versatile and alluring.

For a modest-sized but elegant starter, target the Wild Gulf Prawns ($15) — three big and sweet, oil-poached shrimp partnered with a lovely lemonbutter sauce, Nicoise olives, preserved lemon and a smoky-grilled baby fennel bulb. The properly made, vinegar-spiked Andalusian Gazpacho ($7) with dynamic garnishes is another attractive and delicious first course, albeit a salty one.

greens, preserved lemon, oyster and shiitake mushrooms, and intriguing if gratuitous “smoked beet confit.”

Vegetarians can score big, too, with the Shagbark Spelt Pasta ($19). A virtual garden of herbs, purple radishes, broccolini, spinach, corn and more are flattered by soothing, fruity, and spicy accents from charred-jalapeno butter and a black garlic and tomato chutney.

The Trillium S’mores ($7) — a campfire classic reimagined with peanut butter cups, a huge toasted and amorphous meringue “marshmallow” and milkchocolate anglaise — is about as sweet as the kiddie original. It’s amusing, but I prefer the Seasonal Fruit Crisp ($7) with warm peaches, mint, a crunchy crumble topping and Johnson’s vanilla ice cream.

I experienced some niggling misfires, such as a shrug of a gumbo ($8) and the burnt-not-crisp crostini that accompanied an otherwise winning fried chicken happy hour special ($5). Although terrific once, on another occasion the Spinach and Bibb Salad ($7) was barely dressed. And uncommonly knowledgeable servers can occasionally launch into unrequested loquacious recitations.

Nonetheless, this still-new replacement for a late-and-lamented “top 10” restaurant is off to an impressive, “top-10”type start.

Although less photogenic and missing its promised shishito peppers, my good-tasting Ahi Tuna Poke appetizer ($13) with mostly crisp taro chips, funky pickled radishes and vinegary cucumber “noodles,” is better designed for sharing. Ditto for the Lump Crab Wontons ($11), a gloriously transcendent version of crab rangoon, a usually underwhelming dish.

Asia also inspires two ample meat-and-noodlepacked “summer rolls” served with a wakame salad and an addictive aioli (Duck Confit Vietnamese Spring Rolls, $11). A particularly hearty starter, the herb-kissed Pork Cheek Poutine ($9), seems to grace every table for good reasons: seductive wine-laced gravy, succulent, pot roast-like meat, excellent house fries and Laurel Valley cheese curds.

Pig meat reappears in the Ohio-raised McDowell Farms Pork Chop ($25), an entree highlight. This Southern-style showstopper stars a seared and grillcrusted, thick-cut chop characteristically teamed with multiple accompaniments such as andouille sausage coins, comforting Shagbark bacon-cheddar grits, braised greens, jalapeno-peach “jammie” and luscious redeye gravy.

Another tricked-out dish awaits fresh-fish fans: Homestead Springs Ohio Trout ($25). A generous piece of tender but salty, pan-fried local trout is supported by two crisppancetta-wrapped prawns, ocean-scented, squid-ink linguine, a little chili, fresh

Grain + Grape taproom and retail shop owners Kim and Tom Sneary celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary earlier this year with a vacation in Sedona, Arizona.

“The whole focus of that trip was just to go out hiking every day, but we still managed to hit eight breweries while we were there,” Kim said during a mid-September interview at their Bexley business.

“And that’s only because there were only eight breweries to go to.”

Such is typical for the couple, who have taken numerous “beer vacations” in the past, visiting 15 to 20 breweries in a week in states such as Colorado, California and Oregon.

They also patronized the two wine shops that previously occupied the Grain + Grape space.

Kim, a former executive assistant, and Tom, a former architect, turned their passion into a new profession by purchasing the building and opening their craft beer and wine retail shop in November 2013. After much renovation, they opened the adjacent taproom, featuring a beer bar and wine bar in October 2014.

The “beer side” of the taproom features 11 rotating taps and a bar top that Tom constructed from a discarded bowling lane once located in the Capital University Student Union.

So we always try to have a comparable craft beer,” Tom said.

“If it’s their first craft experience, we want it to be a nice craft experience,” Kim added.

The Snearys credit their success as a small business to their dedication to the neighborhood — they try to support as many local charity events as possible — and networking with beer sales representatives.

“Our competitor is Giant Eagle,” Tom said of the supermarket chain, which opened a Bexley location last year. “When a special beer comes out, they’ll get 15 cases of it, and we’ll get two. We could sell 15 cases of it if we got it, but because they’ve got seven or eight stores in town and they’re such a big buyer, they get preferential treatment. … Craft beer was

community-oriented and it was all about local business and now you have corporate coming in.”

But for now, Grain + Grape has maintained a strong core clientele, which it caters to with alcohol selection and taproom business hours: Wednesday and Thursday, 4-9 p.m. and Friday, 4-10 p.m.

“This is a family-oriented neighborhood, so on the weekends [residents] like to do things with the family,” he said. “[And] nothing good happens after 10 p.m.”

“You wouldn’t believe how many people … lived in this neighborhood for years and years but didn’t know the person three blocks down from them,” Tom continued. “We’ve got a whole community here now [and] we’ve introduced their neighbors to them.”

Speckled Hen Farm Market will be opening a brick-and-mortar location in Old Worthington.

The shop is slated to open in November.

Endeavor Brewing, the brewery located in the former space of Zauber Brewing, holds its grand re-opening this Saturday, Sept. 23.

Public Art | A New Avenue for the Pleasure Principle, The talk will focus on Marc Pally’s work as a curator and facilitator for both temporary and permanent public art projects spanning the last twenty years.

Among the artists featured in the talk are Jenny Holzer, Tony Tasset, Nam June Paik, Janet Echelman, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and Jennifer Steinkamp among many others. 4-6 p.m.

Manchester Orchestra, As led by singer/songwriter/guitarist Andy Hull, the maturity of Manchester Orchestra’s songwriting belied the fact that the bandmembers were barely legal when their group sprung into existence.

Based in Atlanta, Georgia, the indie rock outfit grew out of songs that Hull had begun writing while attending high school. Friends began collaborating with him over time, and Manchester Orchestra soon solidified into a trio comprising Hull, bassist Jonathan Corley, and drummer Jeremiah Edmond. Hull’s songwriting noticeably progressed with the addition of his friends, and the band courted its first fans with an EP release. In 2014, Manchester Orchestra delivered a fourth album, the heavy, post-hardcore-infused Cope. That same year, the band returned with Hope, a companion piece to Cope, featuring reworked, largely acoustic versions of all the album’s songs. $22 in advance, $26 day of show.
