on the cover Five years after the August 2010 release of Camu Tao’s posthumous final album, King of Hearts, the late Columbus rapper’s influence remains as prevalent as ever, surfacing in everything from the genreblurring music of artist’s like Kid Cudi and the Knux to the out-there fashions adopted by hip-hoppers Danny Brown, Young Thug and their ilk. For this week’s cover story, we interviewed friends, family and collaborators dating back to Camu’s childhood years spent growing up on the city’s east side, delving into the life and legacy of a complex artist some friends referred to as Multifaceted Mu. Blueprint
Fly Union
If you were a rapper and a hip-hop fan in the late ’90s, then this was your song. So many relatable references were made in the reminiscing back-and-fourth cut. It would also be a standout in the long, critically acclaimed collaborative catalog between Illogic and Blueprint.
Columbus hip-hop has seen itself transform numerous times, with each instance bringing in a new wave of sound. From S.P.I.R.I.T. in the early days to present interpretations, Ohio’s capital city has never produced just one brand of rap sonics. And perhaps that’s for the better.
7. Fly Union – “Dumb Down”
To this day, no P. Blackk song has been able to eclipse the familiarity and catchiness of “Concorde Rollin.’” It’s the song that made Pedro a name in the boutique scene and the prelude to some of his best work. Illogic
9. The 3RD – “Super Soul”
Even with a limited catalog, The 3RD dropped a few gems. “Super Soul” was one of them. Raw hip-hop lyrics meet a smooth, jazz-laden backdrop on the song. Few hometown hip-hop songs represent their Ohio funk roots better.

No other song represented Columbus hip-hop’s transition from record stores and basements to boutiques better than “Dumb Down.” Before their latter Value Pack releases and long before TGTC, the song had the then-quartet performing at Embassy, Sole Classics and Milk Bar in a style transition unprecedented in the city.
6. Columbus Mob – “Underground Funk”
One of the first nationally recognized hip-hop songs from Columbus, “Underground Funk” helped put the city on the map in 1995, even if it was just for a minute.
5. Blueprint – “Radio-Inactive”
Basically a middle finger to commercialism and an anthem for underground emcees all about their craft, “Radio-Inactive” generated discussion to say the least. Even though the song was well received by most, it still marked a sonic change for Print, one that helped him remain relevant for years to come.
4. Illogic – “1000 Whispers”
Illogic’s Celestial Clockwork album was one of the greatest to ever come from Ohio, and “1000 Whispers” was a defining joint from the project. It helped illustrate Illogic’s menacing emceeing style and accompanying psychotic melodies.
3. Camu Tao – “Hold the Floor”
Produced by DJ PRZM, “Hold the Floor” became a defining example of early Rhymesayers/Definitive Jux-style sound. It was the anthem for Atmosphere’s “God Loves Ugly” tour and a seminal prototype of Camu’s unique emceeing prowess. RIP Camu and PRZM.
2. RJD2 – “Ghostwriter”
What needs to be said about this song? It has 17 million plays on Spotify and was played on ESPN when Ohio State won the college football National Championship in January.
1. MHz – “World Premier”
“World Premier” was the song that would eventually put RJD2, Copywrite, Camu Tao, Jakki Da Motamouth and Tage Future over the top. After a focused pursuit of New York Hot 97’s Bobbito Garcia during the late 90s, the five-member MHz crew finally heard their standout track played on New York radio — something few had accomplished in previous years. Actually, few from Columbus have cracked the world’s biggest radio market since.

ight about the time the die-hard night owls hit the sack, the early risers will be hitting the dance floor. Bright and early on Aug. 21, Wild Goose Creative will play host to Wake and Shake, a morning rave modeled after popular dance parties in New York and Philadelphia. Wild Goose Creative board member Dana Cox hopes the event will allow those with grown-up work schedules to jump-start their workday with a rave rather than a run. “I feel like the best dance parties don’t even start until midnight, and by that time I’m ready to go home. I go out occasionally, but it’s not something I can do all the time, and I wish I could do it more,” Cox said at the North Campus creative space in mid-August. “I think for a lot of people in Columbus, this kind of event will make sense for them.”
Starting at 6 a.m., DJ Ricks will be blasting EDM, hip-hop and pop tunes to get the neon-clad early birds moving. But don’t expect to catch an early buzz; the pre-work dance party is completely dry, offering partygoers coffee, Alchemy Juice and smoothies in lieu of
libations. Though it may seem counterintuitive to fuel a dance party on caffeine and endorphins alone, similar parties like Daybreaker in New York City and Morning Gloryville in the United Kingdom have become hugely successful, with iterations popping up in Tokyo,

opportunities in Columbus to experience dance in different ways. You can use it as your workout or creative expression. It encourages creativity,” she said. “These types of events are taking hold all over the country, and I want to see it here.” Alchemy Juice Bar will be offering juice samples and raw vegan breakfast treats, and Handheld Food Truck will be serving breakfast after partygoers work up a sweat. Coffee will be provided. The $5 admission fee benefits Wild Goose Creative. “The arts have been an important part of Columbus for a long time. It’s what makes our community a great place to live. No matter where you live in Columbus, you’ve been touched by the arts community,” she said. “[Wild Goose is] a creative art space that serves the arts community. One of every four dollars we raise goes directly back to artists.” Though the 6 a.m. start time seems daunting, Cox hopes partygoers will come out in all their neon-costumed glory to kick-start their weekend. “Any time I engage in a physical activity I feel it’s really rewarding; it relieves stress and allows for new ideas,” Cox said. “It’s still going to be an early morning for most people. I just can’t wait to dance.”

Mumbai, Amsterdam and Stockholm, as well as many major American cities. Cox believes it’s time to add Columbus to that list. “I thought it was an interesting concept because it’s more focused on the dancing aspect and energizing your day. It calls out to a different crowd: the people who don’t stay out all night,” Cox said. “It’s all about finding a gap in your day to invest in something fun. Columbus needs it, too.” Dance has always been a prominent part of Cox’s life, but she found it difficult to fit late-night partying into her 9-5 schedule after college. Cox approached the Wild Goose board with the idea, and things started to serendipitously fall into place. “Post-college those opportunities [to incorporate dance into my life] seemed to wane. Part of it is the schedule not fitting into my lifestyle. I really wanted to do the event and the Wild Goose board got behind me.” she said. “Four days later DJ Ricks emailed us asking how he could contribute to the [Wild Goose] community, so we plugged him into the Wake and Shake event.” Cox believes the Columbus community is ready for a new avenue to experience creative expression, and Wake and Shake will be another way to bring that community together. “There are a lot of

‘We’re the Shazzbots’ show to premiere at GFC event By Abernathy Miller @Abernathy_Alive “Captain” Ian Hummel and the rest of his kid-centric band the Shazzbots are ready for take-off. Since 2008 Hummel and his crew/ co-stars have been bringing G-rated rock songs to pint-sized fans. Last summer, the crew took the leap to launch a children’s TV show. With a successful Kickstarter campaign and a grueling production process under their jumpsuit belts, Columbus’ favorite family-friendly band is set to share their tour adventures on the big screen at Gateway Film Center for the pilot episode of “We Are The Shazzbots” on Saturday, Aug. 22, aiming to “inject some heart and soul back into children’s programming” and grab the attention of a major network. “All of my friends were having kids … so I sat down to see if I could write a kids’ song. Next thing you knew, I had an album’s worth,” Hummel said. “I began formulating a plan for this outer space rock band for kids.” Hummel formed The Shazzbots with Josh Tully, Mike Heslop, Steve Frye and Hummels’ wife, Dianne, and the band released their first album Shazz-
bots Go! in 2008. While the focus was on live performance, a television show was always part of the plan. “From my initial impetus of this Shazzbots project, I was always thinking about [doing a] TV show,” Hummel said. “We’ve got a story to tell, and you can’t [do that] in a 45-minute concert. To get across the depth and the vastness of our artistic vision, I wanted to get back to the original plan.” Last summer’s Kickstarter campaign to produce the show exceeded the band’s original goal of $20,000, raising $23,467 to date, but Hummel knew the real work was still ahead. “We may have made our Kickstarter goal, but that still wasn’t all that much money with all we wanted to do,” he said. “This is by far the hardest, most intense and stressful artistic project I have ever worked on in my life.” Saturday’s premiere of the pilot at Gateway Film Center will include a Shazzbots performance and a milkshake afterparty in the lounge. The kid-friendly event will also appeal to rock-loving adults. “That’s what our music is about; it’s kids’ music for the parents too,” Hummel said. “These are 100% real songs written and played by us that just happen to have childlike subject matter.”

Stylist, plus-size model and newly crowned Miss Hot Rod Hula Hop, Cat Monster doesn’t have clothes; she has “wardrobe.” As resident wardrobe and hair stylist for photographer Laura Dark, the 28-year-old Columbus native is always camera-ready. Whether she decides to go pin-up perfect or goth chic, Monster starts every day playing dress-up.
Hair: DIY. It took me a long time to finally get my hair this light. For a lot of years, I didn’t like myself very much, and lightening my hair was sort of part of the journey. Now I wear my blonde hair like a trophy. Monroe piercing: Evolved
Body Art. I love Marilyn’s beauty mark, so I wanted one of my own.
Dress: Hellbunny. Hellbunny
is my favorite pin-up clothing brand because they have clothing that hugs every figure well. This dress is wearable and a showstopper at the same time, and it’s very figure-flattering. It’s probably my favorite dress.
Cat Monster
Makeup: I normally wear a classic pin-up style. It’s elegant and it goes with everything. Necklace: Sourpuss.com.
As a stylist and a model, I use the name Cat Monster because I love scream queens. I had to have this necklace.
Tattoo: By David Boggins at
American Crow Tattoo. My family is Czech, and the artist Alphonse Mucha is very important to all of us. I surrounded his portrait with pink roses because my aunt Cindy used to grow them before she passed away.
Purse: Thrifted. I love having authentic vintage accessories to go with my outfits, because it’s difficult to find authentic vintage clothes in the appropriate size.

Sad bastard music
Sad songs will always be my favorite. They’ve always resonated with me since my childhood because I was a sad kid. I still kinda am. I love bands like The Smiths, The Menzingers and Jawbreaker, Pinkerton by Weezer and The Steeldrivers, and my favorite punk songs are mostly about heartbreak (with songs about how much the government and cops suck being a close second).
Gateway Film Center
Anyone who knows me knows of my deep love for movies. For a time, I actually worked briefly at this establishment and to this day my biggest regret about no longer being there is not getting to see movies for free. But I still regularly see all my movies here, because GFC does a great job balancing mainstream new releases and independent features that I wouldn’t be able to see in the multiplexes of the city.
Action movies
In 2013, I tried to move to Chicago for comedy. Four months later, I had to move back. This city has been great to me since I first moved here in summer of 2011 and in terms of comedy, there’s been a great deal of support from local businesses. I’ve lived here for a little over four years now and I’ve barely cracked the surface of what this city has to offer. I still haven’t been to Thurman’s, you guys. SORRY.
My Epiphone SG
Before I started doing comedy, I spent the 11 years playing in bands of varying quality. When I bought this guitar back around 2004, that was sort of the turning point. I started messing around with different styles of guitar playing and started writing punk songs that I was proud of. I still write and practice a couple days a week to keep my chops up, and every time I pick it up I kick myself a little that I’m playing in the privacy of my bedroom and not actually out playing shows so people can hear my songs about girls I like that don’t like me.
I am an unapologetic lover of the genre, and I feel like action movies are widely dismissed from an academic and cultural perspective. My dream is that one day the Academy will apologize and retroactively give every single Oscar to “Die Hard” and “Commando.”

It’s generally accepted that fellow artists held his talents in greater regard during his lifetime than the music-listening public. “Camu is

As with any far-off celestial body, it’s taken humankind significant time to even mount a proper exploratory expedition, and listening back on Camu’s diverse, sprawling catalog, there’s an unshakable sense the culture at large is still embroiled in a game of catch-up. “I don’t know if he had a crystal ball or if he tapped into a different plane of existence, but he was so far ahead of the curve it was lightweight mind-blowing,” Gats said. Indeed, it could be argued Camu’s influence is more pronounced now — five years after the August 2010 release of his posthumous album King of Hearts (Def Jux) — than at any point during the years he was active, revealing itself in everything from the work of genre-blurring artists like Kid Cudi and the Knux to the out-there fashions adopted by

Friends and family of Camu Tao, born Tero Smith, described the late Columbus rapper in similar terms in a recent series of interviews, presenting him as a complex, dynamic personality who frequently tailored his interactions to his audience, allowing different character traits to surface in each exchange. “He had a hundred different sides,” friend and current Columbus resident Bee Gats said. “We used to call him multifaceted Mu. He was everybody’s friend, and nobody knew him.” “He was his own planet,” said local rapper/producer Da Intalec, who first met the musician in the early ’90s and functioned as one of Camu’s earliest mentors. “If we were talking about the universe, he would be Planet X: the unknown planet. What’s the atmosphere composition? You wouldn’t know. And then whenever you start thinking it’s oxygen, you learn it’s something else.”

considered a rapper’s rapper by those in the know,” El-P said. Like its creator, King of Hearts largely defied categorization. The album was a marked departure for Camu, featuring far more singing than rapping. It’s also his darkest, most personal recording, peppered with songs shaped by his dealings with a form of lung cancer not caused by cigarette smoke or asbestos. “Death, where have you been all my life?” he sings on “Death,” a disarmingly upbeat song that shares DNA with the Crystals’ 1963 hit “Then He Kissed Me.” The answer, sadly, arrived early Sunday morning, May 25, 2008, when the musician succumbed to cancer at the age of 30, passing away in the cancer wing of the same Ohio State University hospital where he was born three decades earlier, on June 26, 1977. Camu’s refusal to be hemmed in originated early in life, said his mother, Lavonne Smith, recalling the time he freed himself from his crib at 9 months old. “His dad [Thaddeus] said, ‘Come here and look; he got out [of the crib]!’” she said in a July interview at a coffee shop adjacent to her east side

home. “I said, ‘How’d you get out of there?’” “It was almost like he never wanted anyone to be able to tell him who he was,” said El-P, who first connected with the rapper after Camu relocated to New York — a place he called home for the better part of a decade beginning in the late ’90s — and later teamed with him in the hip-hop collective the Weathermen, as well as the duo Central Services. “He always wanted to keep everyone off balance. Even in his personality, you never knew what Camu was going to do or say, and that endeared him to us very much because he was incredibly exciting to be around.” Everyone interviewed described Camu as equal parts magnetic, hilarious and loud, painting a picture of a larger-than-life presence who had the ability to instantly change the complexion of any gathering. “He was the kind of dude who walked into a room and demand-

ed attention,” said longtime friend and Columbus native Copywrite, who first met Camu as a freshman at Walnut Ridge High School in the mid-90s (the two later teamed with RJD2, Jakki da Motamouth and Tage Future to form the hiphop crew MHz, which ushered the local scene onto the national stage with its 1998 debut single “World Premier”). “He just had so much personality, man. You couldn’t ignore the guy.” A pop-culture addict by nature, Camu frequently quoted his favorite comedians, dropping lines from Martin Lawrence standup bits (“The water would just glisten all over your body!”) and busting out pitch-perfect impressions of “In Living Color” characters like blues singer Calhoun Tubbs (“Wrote a song about it. Like to hear it? Here it goes!”). He consistently invented characters of his own as well, some of whom (Blair Cosby, Cereal Carpens, MillionDollar Building) developed into
alter egos that would surface on gut-busting, lo-fi cassette tapes recorded in daylong flourishes and distributed to friends. Others, like Bitch Broccoli (a character he regularly talked about adapting for film) and an unnamed gentleman who espoused the virtues of Tysonology — a religion based on Mike Tyson-isms, among other things — existed solely as inside jokes among friends. “Sometimes he’d get so deep in these characters, and you’d see his brain firing on all cylinders going on and on about the nuances of these people he made up and you’d be like, ‘Man, I don’t even know what you’re talking about or how we got here, but please keep going,’” said friend and fellow rapper Aesop Rock, who partnered with Camu in the Weathermen and later teamed with him for a freestyle mixtape dubbed Couch Boys, a stream-of-consciousness album about two dudes sitting on a couch. “You could see him connecting things so rapidly and in such a unique way that you just wanted to be around to see it unfold.” This rapid-fire, freeform creativity extended into all of his musical pursuits, and Camu remained

with his ever-evolving hairstyle, and acquaintances recalled the musician rocking everything from a dyed-yellow mohawk to purposely shaved-in male-pattern baldness modeled after George Jefferson — a ridiculous ’do the rapper adopted to force himself to stay in the studio and work, since he figured he’d be too embarrassed to show up in public sporting the look. “He always had a different eye for things, and he didn’t want to do what everybody else did,” Copywrite said. “He refused to be normal because he wasn’t normal.” Camu’s creative streak exhibited itself from an early age. As a child, he displayed a flair for both music and art, and it wasn’t unusual for his mother to present the phone company with an invoice covered in animator-quality sketches of He-Man and Skeletor when she appeared in person to pay the bill. In elementary school, the musician submitted a winning entry in a Columbus Public

Music was a constant in the Smith’s east side home, and the family stereo featured a steady mix of everything from “the Doobie Brothers to the Isley Brothers,” according to his sister Kathy. When he wasn’t playing basketball (he excelled on his high school team) or video games, Camu could generally be found in the attic, poring over album liner notes as vinyl records spun on the turntable — a practice that helped him develop a familiarity with and a fondness for a staggering variety of songs and artists, including but not limited to A Tribe Called Quest, Nirvana, Vanilla Fudge, the Cure, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” and the Cardigans’ “Lovefool.” “Like Barbra Streisand … why would you even have that record?” said local rapper and friend Metro, who partnered with Camu in the duo S.A. vocal style after the equally bigvoiced Busta Rhymes, and his instudio approach was so energized it could sometimes be a struggle to capture on record. The first time he worked with Intalec, for instance, laying down vocals for the song “Kids in the Mid,” the producer forced him to record while sitting on the closet floor in his home studio, since the confined space restricted Camu’s normally explosive arm movements. A similar outlandishness defined his fashion choices, which ranged from cowboy boots and giant belt buckles “the size of WWE championship belts,” according to Yashar Zadeh, a.k.a. Yak Ballz of the Weathermen, to a yellow raincoat he’d typically wear under blue skies. As a child, he’d often get scolded for painting on his Wallabees, according to his sister Samantha, but he carried on regardless because he required even his footwear to reflect his unique personality. forever in search of new ways to approach his craft. When he performed live, it wasn’t unusual for him to attack verses from different angles each time around, poking and prodding like a jazz player as he tried to uncover new wrinkles in his sound. “I’m meticulous, and when I write a rap, I write down precisely where everything goes. With Camu, he would write a verse, and then it would go where it goes,” Copywrite said. “We all have [Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder], and I think he’d just get bored. Artistically he had so much energy, and he didn’t want to hear the same things.” “One thing we all knew and appreciated about Camu was that he changed his style not only from song to song, but from verse to verse,” El-P said. “This was not a guy who was comfortable or who was trying to carve out a niche. This was someone who really wanted to figure out what made him tick, and put it out there for the world.” On the microphone, as in person, Camu generally projected an oversized, animated presence. Early on, he molded his booming

Copywrite and Metro said he had synesthesia, a neurological condition where songs could elicit a multisensory response (“The music would hit his emotions, and he’d say, ‘I listen to this record and keep crying, but I’m not sad,’” said Copy) — and even the way he dribbled a basketball had a unique sense of rhythm to it. His cousin Brandy Larry recalled an instance she spotted him walking down Lilley Avenue toward the public basketball courts, spitting freestyle verses as a ball kept the beat, the “music just coming out of him … like he was born with it.” Oftentimes Camu would hear music in unexpected places. Metro noted one time when the musician stopped by with a borrowed Gemini sampler — even at the height of his career Camu never owned his own gear, and it wasn’t unusual for him to phone guys like Intalec and RJD2 at 3 a.m. demanding access to equipment — and recorded the beeping tone elicited by an off-the-hook landline, flipping the chirping sound into a trippy, infectious beat. “He would hear things most cats couldn’t,” said Intalec. At 6’3” and north of 200 pounds, Camu, a dead ringer for his late father, cut an intimidating figure. He was also impressively strong. “He could throw you onto the roof of your house if he wanted to,” El-P said. Even so, he was blessed with long, elegant fingers that allowed him to manipulate the complex dials on an MPC drum machine with concert pianist grace. “You’d watch him bang out beats, and it was like his hands just knew what to do,” Zadeh said. Like his sisters, Camu was born with soft features and a naturally expressive face, which allowed him to convey a wide range of emotions with a wry smile or a quick, bug-eyed glance. His mother recalled one time in preschool when a teacher asked the students to practice their expressions in a long mirror, and

It’s a vulnerability that surfaced more frequently in Camu’s final years. Brandy Larry recalled a time she came across Camu alone in his bedroom and he invited her in and asked her how to pray, worried he was somehow doing it incorrectly. “I told him if you speak whatever is in your heart, he’s going to hear it,” she said. And though Camu never brought up the subject with her again, everyone from Jakki to the rapper’s mother expressed a belief that he continued to explore his Christian faith on his own terms. El-P, in turn, recounted a phone call after the cancer diagnosis where the two exchanged heated

friend Jakki Da Motamouth, who, along with Copywrite and Camu, formed a teenage trio that regularly engaged in “Jackass”like shenanigans, scamming fast food joints for free meals, placing prank phone calls and filming jokey faux-news segments where one of the three would pose as a BET man-on-the-street reporter to toy with passersby. “In public, we were jerks. If you were outside the circle, we looked at this person like, ‘Let’s have fun with this dude.’ But it was only part of his personality, and it didn’t mean he didn’t care for people or he wouldn’t help people out. Because he would; he had a soft heart.”

words, only to have Camu phone back minutes later, crying. “And he said, ‘I’m just scared, man. I don’t want to go. I don’t understand why this is happening to me. I don’t know what I did,’” he said. “That’s always stuck with me because I know for a fact he didn’t do anything. To see someone who was so alive and so powerful and so protective of his emotions so [unguarded] … always stuck with me as maybe the most intimate understanding of who he was, truly.” While the cancer gradually stripped away Camu’s size (his late weight loss rendered him unrecognizable to even close friends) and strength, it never dampened his passion for music, and even in those final days at home he was never more than a few steps from recording equipment, which remained set up in the bedroom closet alongside his massive sneaker collection. Aesop Rock described the songs that would become King of Hearts as the embodiment of everything Camu was going through at the time, saying, “It sounds to me like this guy just wrote himself out the door.” “Music is what kept him living and moving and changing and progressing,” Brandy Larry said. Music should also ensure death isn’t the end for Camu. “He’s the cat where 20 years from now I could see some kid discovering his music on YouTube or whatever is around then and being like, ‘Wow, this guy!’” Da Intalec said. Somehow this seems fitting. Camu was so often the kid who couldn’t be contained. Not by his crib. Not by genre designations. Not by social norms or fashion trends or defenders on the basketball court. Why then would death be any different? A special thanks to everyone interviewed, including: Aesop Rock, Bee Gats, Copywrite, Da Intalec, El-P, Kurtis “Scotch” Foster, Jakki da Motamouth, King Vada, Brandy Larry, Metro, RJD2, Kathy Smith, Lavonne Smith, Samantha Smith, Marc Wheat, Yash “Yak Ballz” Zadeh

Camu cracked up his classmates with his rubbery facial manipulations. “He was able to communicate a lot with a look: graciousness to anger to confusion to things you can’t put in words,” said friend and producer RJD2, also of Columbus. “You could read stuff in his eyes, man.” At times, according to friends, this was the only way to glean information from the notoriously guarded musician, whose defense mechanisms, like the Great Wall of China, could likely be viewed from space. “He definitely had some walls up — this loudness about him some people didn’t get to break through and others just didn’t understand,” Aesop Rock said. “But in his quieter moments the guy was all heart. [He was] smart and creative and emotionally aware. I would say he definitely didn’t let many people in, and when he did, it was a struggle for him. In the times he would take a serious tone and have some sort of emotionally charged conversation … it seemed to almost carry twice the weight as it would with anyone else.” As a result, those outside Camu’s inner circle were sometimes turned off by his brash demeanor — which was further molded by the battle culture prevalent in the late-90s Columbus hip-hop scene — and his occasional temper flare-ups, which, like his appearance, could be traced directly back to his father. “He got his soft side from me and his mean side from his dad,” his mom said, laughing. “Camu was notorious for telling people they were whack. He loved to tell somebody, ‘Naw, you’re trash,’” said local rapper and artist King Vada, who was told to give up music the first time he rhymed for Camu as a teenager (the two would later become friends). “That was part of the culture then. It was a battling culture, and everybody had tough skin.” “You had to have thick skin to hang with us,” said longtime

If you ask fans of the Avett Brothers what they love most about the band, they will likely mention the electrifying energy the folk rockers famously exude during live shows. The Concord, North Carolina, band — made up of actual brothers Seth and Scott Avett (lead and backing vocals, guitar and other instruments), and honorary brothers Bob Crawford (backing vocals, upright bass) and Joe Kwon (cello), and touring members Mike Marsh, Paul Defiglia and Tania Elizabeth — has cultivated a huge following thanks in large part to their stage presence and infectious enthusiasm. Which begs the question: After more than a decade of touring together, how do the Brothers maintain that liveliness night after night on the road? “A big part of it for me is exercise. I try to get exercise on the road to stay healthy and as fit as possible. And that’s hard to do sometimes,” explained Bob Crawford by phone last month during a short break in their
expansive U.S. tour (which stops in Columbus at the LC on Friday, Aug. 21). “I still get up there and look at [my bandmates], and, we were in Houston, New Orleans and Birmingham this week, and it was 100 degrees every day. It was so hot that it was just hard to move, and it really takes a toll on you. And they were still on stage moving 90 miles an hour.” The band’s secret? “You try to preserve your energy before you go on,” Crawford said. “What we decided is it’s good to be almost asleep before we go up on stage. It’s good to be really tired before you go on stage because then you can just turn it around really quick. And hopefully, the songs themselves do a lot of the work for us.” Since forming in the early 2000s, the Brothers have released eight albums, including their latest, 2013’s Magpie and the Dandelian, and they are currently wrapping up work on a new LP. But for now, the focus is still on touring, which, Crawford said, can be a grueling but rewarding experience. “It’s important to not complain
about the wear and tear of travel, because we’re really blessed to be able to do what we do,” he said. “There are little things here and there ... that are tough. You never rest well. Even if you have a day off at the hotel, you never rest, [but] we get to do something that so few people are privileged to do, and we can’t ever forget how special an opportunity this is we’ve been given.” The hardest part about life on the road, Crawford said, has been spending time away from his family — especially his five-year-old daughter, Hallie, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2011 at age two. After surgery (which removed much of the right side of her brain), chemotherapy, and radiation treatment at St. Jude Children’s Hospital, she is “doing really great” and has been cancer-free for two years, Crawford said. “Two years off treatment, we’re seeing her grow,” he added. “It’s one day at a time. She’ll start kindergarten at the end of August, which we never imagined would happen. I mean, we prayed for it but we were so locked
in the battle of one day at a time, and that never goes away.” Crawford said the support of his bandmates helped him through the tougher times. “The whole experience has made me a much more spiritual person, and more grateful of all that I have ... Also, the love that we all share in the group. I’m very conscious — hyper aware — that this won’t last forever.” Reflecting on the band’s success, he added: “There will a day where we lay down our keep and don’t play together anymore. So every show, you kind of have the sense of, ‘OK, how many of these are left?’ It doesn’t have to be a morbid or dark thought. But our music career will come to an end, and, in the meantime, we get to do an amazing job with people we care so much about.”

like “The Tell-Tale Heart.” “That’s how I want my songs to be,” said Hofmann, who first picked up a guitar at 14 years old as a means of coping with a type 1 diabetes diagnosis. “They all have a surface meaning, but a lot of them, if you study the lyrics more, you’d probably find, oh, this could mean this, too. I like to have it super layered.” By building in these layers, the west-side native, who copped to being genetically introverted — her housepainter father, who plays ukulele bass on “Found the One,” dabbled in music but forever struggled with stage fright — said she’s able to mask the truelife experiences that often inform her songs, giving her an additional level of comfort with sharing the material. “There’s usually a more personal meaning, but I mask it in this outlandish story that has nothing to do with me,” Hofmann said. “Part of it is because I’m shy and I don’t want people [to know too much]. But I also want to write songs that haven’t been written 100 times before; I’m always trying to find a more interesting way to tell a story.”

Throughout Almost Paradise, Elise Hofmann’s debut studio full-length, the singer-songwriter repeatedly inches closer to happiness, only to pull back before it can formally take root. “You make me happy,” she sings in a somber voice on “Skin Cells,” delivering her words atop minimal acoustic strumming. “But I don’t want to be happy.” “When things are going well, I’m generally like, ‘Hmm, what’s going to go wrong?’” said Hofmann, 22, who headlines a record release show at Brothers Drake Meadery on Friday, Aug. 21. “It’s really hard for me to write a happy song. Even the ones that are supposed to be happy … usually turn out sounding bittersweet.” More recently, her songs have taken a gruesome turn, populated by vampires, specters and references to the haunted work of Edgar Allan Poe, an author the singer first gravitated towards in middle school after becoming entranced with the depth in classics

Branchez When electronic dance music reached its mainstream peak — probably around 2012 when Skrillex’s “Cinema” dropped, and it seemingly became the only damn song on a given bar’s playlist, to an excruciating extent — dance producers seemed to be a dime a dozen. There were a lot of producers and DJs riding the EDM wave of the early 2010s, making it difficult to pick out which ones were cashing in on a fad or had an authentic sound to share. It’s safe to say that Branchez, the project of New York City producer Sam Kopelman, falls into the latter group. Branchez’s focus on vibe has allowed him to create his own niche in a vast EDM scene, creating music with a heavier R&B inflection instead of something that force-feeds rage. That said, Branchez’s upcoming set is at Park Street Saloon, so you know he’ll have a stash of tracks that go hard just as well. — Matthew Lovett

Sara Evans Proud “tomato” exhibits resiliency on Slow Me Down

Sara Evans has one thing to say to Keith Hill, the radio consultant who kicked off a national debate on gender issues in country music with his May interview in a trade publication: Thank you. “I was mad about his comments … but at the same time I was glad that he said it because it was an opportunity to open up the whole conversation,” Evans said of Hill’s early summer remarks where he suggested songs by female performers should be included sparingly on country radio playlists, like “the tomatoes of our salad.” “Country radio has become such a narrow genre over the last few years, and it’s been such a fight and a struggle for women to get their songs played. To ever bring
that topic up as a female artist, we were all nervous. We didn’t want to offend anyone. But then he brought it up and we were able to respond. Now there’s a lot of healthy conversation happening.” Country radio’s ongoing male dominance — solo male performers accounted for 14 of the top 15 songs on the Billboard Hot Country singles chart the week of Aug. 22 — has been an adjustment for Evans, 44, who came up in the ’90s, an era where female performers like Faith Hill, Wynona Judd and Shania Twain received steady airplay and racked up impressive sales figures. “It was diverse music, too. It wasn’t even that females rose to the top and we all had the same song. It would have been weird if every female artist had started singing songs like, ‘My husband cheated on me!’” said Evans,
lamenting the current bro-country trend where mentions of pickup trucks, cold beers and warm summer nights dominate the airwaves. “Those songs are fun, and there’s definitely room for that in country music. But it’s not just about that. There are a lot of country fans who … don’t relate to the ‘get in my truck’ party atmosphere. A lot of people want to hear a great story.” Evans’ latest, Slow Me Down, delivers on this promise, building around resolute characters dealing with all manner of relationship drama. Witness “Better Off,” a patient, fiddle-colored duet with Vince Gill where the singer embodies a woman doing her best to hold things together as a romance falls steadily to pieces. “I know your eyes are burning/ But try to hold it in,” she cautions in a near-conversational tone.
“Don’t let him see you crying/ Don’t give that much to him.” According to Evans, who headlines a concert at the Bluestone on Sunday, Aug. 23, it’s a resilience that can be traced back to her upbringing. At 8 years old, the singer, who was born and raised on a farm in Missouri, survived being hit by a car, an accident that left her with two broken arms and legs. Then at 12, her parents divorced with little warning “and I didn’t see my father much after that,” she said. “Then I continued to go through drama in my adult life,” said Evans, alluding to her experience with a brutal public divorce in the mid-2000s. “That’s why I relate to those songs: the person might be badly bruised and badly beat up, but [they’re] never down for the count.”

New Ohio Art League director is aiming to bridge past, future By Jesse Tigges // @Jesse_Tigges • Photo by Meghan Ralston

im Webb, the recently named director of the Ohio Art League, plans to reinvigorate the 105-year-old non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Ohio artists by bridging the organization’s impactful history with a future rife with possibility.
30
“The history is a big, important part for me,” Webb said, patting books containing Columbus Art League news articles and memorabilia dating back the early 20th Century she’s been combing over to prepare for her new role in the organization. “Being the oldest non-profit still operating comes with so much potential and should be celebrated and understood. How we progress, what OAL has done for [its member] artists, what it’s doing now, and what those artists
need, all have this understanding of adding to the history. Celebrating those past artists, as well as the present ones, will also bring in new artists.” OAL has left an impression on both Columbus — beginning in 1910 when 40 recent graduates of Columbus Art School (now CCAD) formed the Columbus Art League — and the Ohio arts community. For decades, OAL has been a significant champion of the arts through organizing annual juried exhibi-

artists. I think [different art forms] feed each other, so it’s important … to have music, writing and performance as well as visual art. I really just want to bring everyone together and work statewide to build partnerships. I’m not interested in competition. I’m interested in collaboration and building community and support,” Webb said. “I also think it’s important that we have a home base in Ohio, but that it doesn’t get too absorbed into just Columbus,” she added. “We will have a gallery in Columbus, but we’re also going to connect with other galleries statewide. I want to bring a lot of artists from across the state to Columbus, and vice versa. Hopefully, after that we can go regional and eventually connect with galleries across the nation, maybe the world.” Webb also plans to implement new OAL events — talks, meetups, critiques and more — that will coincide with existing programs, and she hopes to eventually create a “resource center” featuring skill trade, library/bookstore, and work spaces that could potentially be housed with the gallery. Founding a new gallery, engaging all of the Ohio art community — from established institutions to grassroots DIY collectives — and generating new programming are in development. But Webb is open to ideas from the entire art community, regardless of discipline, because that’s where the most potential resides. “I want to talk to artists and people interested in supporting OAL, because it’s a member-based organization. I want the members to really have an ownership, create teambuilding and a community. It’s really the member’s organization so I want it to grow how they want it to grow,” Webb said. “I also want to hear what people want; those creative ideas and for everyone to [feel like they will be heard]. That’s a big part of what OAL should be — a go-to and safe place for people to experiment and connect, and have a voice. When you have a member-based organization like this, it’s an incredible think tank.”

tions that are recognized as respected, professional avenues to showcase work and include renowned luminaries (Alice Schille, Roy Lichtenstein, Emerson Burkhart and George Bellows) among their ranks. Over the last few years, OAL has been going through a transitional period, closing its gallery in the Short North in 2009 before relocating to a space in the South Campus Gateway, which also closed in 2014. Webb knows a gallery is imperative to serve as a base of operations as well as showcase the talent of the 600-plus member organization, and discussions are in the works for a new location. “We’re still figuring out the details of a [specific] space, but having the gallery and holding exhibitions is definitely top priority. I want to have really important exhibitions about important things that are happening right now. Maybe that means restructuring the format of how the exhibitions have been,” said Webb, who’d previously been the manager of Fresh A.I.R. Gallery for eight years. “For a while, [exhibitions] are going to be satellite exhibitions. Securing a really strong space to lay down some deep roots is a really important component. I hope that’s soon … there are some things that are still being worked out.” While the process of acquiring a new gallery is underway, Webb said OAL has secured spaces to hold upcoming “satellite” exhibitions. OAL’s upcoming Fall Juried Exhibition (Sept. 8-Oct. 15) will be at the Fort Hayes Shot Tower Gallery, its Spring Juried Exhibition at OSU Urban Arts Space, and the 2016 Fall version is slated to take place at the Cultural Arts Center. Along with a dedicated gallery, Webb has other components she’d like to implement for OAL that she feels are similarly vital and will bring together artists from all across Ohio with Columbus serving as the hub. “To bring OAL back up to what it should be and go beyond that, I first want to build it up statewide and have it [be] more interdisciplinary with all

For its fourth year, the Columbus Invitation Arts Competition (CIAC) is taking a local approach by highlighting art groups from Columbus for the yearly competitive arts event. Last year’s event broke from tradition in bringing in regional groups from Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and West Virginia, but a return to staying local was a specific objective in 2015 as the CIAC looks to expand its reach in future competitions. “Our plan is to do a rotating schedule, to alternate the local versions with ones including out-of-town groups. Next year, our plan is to do all Ohio,” said CIAC director Chris Sunami. “Ultimately we’re hoping to push out to even larger levels, nationally, a little further down the road.” CIAC invites creative groups from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines to compete while also highlighting the strength of support inherent in a collective. “It’s always groups, and that’s intentional,” Sunami said. “We’re trying to support the groups because [they] support the individual artists.”

“entitative Portrait #1” by nick stull
Do we change? Maybe, but the more important question is “How do we change?” The current exhibit at Gallery 831 “Then and Now” focuses on how a number of local artists have developed, mainly in their artistic practice. But there are also instances where you can see a philosophical change within the artists that is expressed outwardly in the work. Curated by local pop artist Joss Parker and Clayspace artist Todd Hickerson, “Then and Now” features pieces from more than 20 artists — including ceramics and two-dimensional mediums — displaying work from the past and the present. Some works date back to the artists’ earliest days with gradeschool pictures (Todd Hickerson’s decades-old piece is quite amusing), but a majority of the “Then” pieces come from the last five to ten years. Some substantial transformation among these exhibiting artists is apparent regardless of years between the pieces. Bret Elam’s paintings from the late aughts differ greatly from his massive wood panel creations featuring miscreant, intricately tattooed versions of iconic figures — here, it’s He-Man, Skeletor and a wicked Pez dispenser.
34
But Elam’s early paintings have a subtle appeal as well, especially “Madonna Without Child.” Another bold transition comes from Leslie Minnich, whose blue flowers painting is hard to compare to the stark landscapes she’s also created. Minnich’s minimal depictions of often cold and harrowing landscapes are stunning with fraught splendor. Her large cityscape at night, titled “Dark,” is captivating through its unsympathetic perspective. Also worth mentioning are two paintings by Nick Stull. His older (2011) “Entitative Portrait #1” (pictured) is a powerful-yet-simple depiction that pulls the viewer in while simultaneously pushing them away. It’s a deep contrast to his newer painting “Hovering | Helmet | Hair | Heater” that contains more whimsy, kinetic verve and a diverse color palette. Both are technically sharp, but the subtle emotion of “Entitative Portrait #1” offers a judicious contemplation of the human condition. There is plenty more to explore in “Then and Now,” including the obvious development in regards to technique and practice. But if the viewer closely examines these pieces, there’s more depth to unearth.

Through eight episodes, “Mr. Robot” has been mainly defined by its innovation, but there’s also a palpable sense of obfuscation. These two traits actually go hand-in-hand, because the unclear and mostly perplexing hacker universe in “Mr. Robot” — paired with the unreliability of the narrator/protagonist Elliot (Rami Malek) — would never work if the execution hadn’t been so astounding. “Mr. Robot” is about Elliot, a cybersecurity-engineer-by-day, vigilantehacker-by-night who’s also dealing with social anxiety and addiction issues. The audience sees everything mostly through Elliot’s perspective, and, given his issues, it’s hard to figure out what exactly is going on. So Elliot’s travails in the corporate world, his interactions with the mysterious hacker group fsociety and most importantly his relationships with others all basically operate in a ciphered narrative. The biggest uncertainty in “Mr. Robot” lies in the titular character, played by Christian Slater. [Spoiler Alert] The eighth episode of “Mr. Robot” ended with a massive cliffhanger on the identity of Mr. Robot, but early on the dynamic be-
tween Mr. Robot and Elliot suggested a Tyler Durden situation. It still remains unclear if we’re experiencing a retread of the “Fight Club” twist — the least essential component of both the novel and film — but it really doesn’t matter because “Mr. Robot” is utterly excellent. “Mr. Robot” jumped out of the gate with an excellent pilot, written by creator Sam Esmail and directed by Niels Arden Oplev (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”) that immediately signaled this series demanded attention (and acclaim). The following episodes were similarly enthralling — and gorgeously shot — with the last three exhibiting brilliance. Episode six ended with what might be the best scene in all of television this year, buoyed by some excellent sound design — that churning hum and those haunting sirens! — thanks in large part to the performance of Malek. His magnetic, yet subtle work has actually enhanced Esmail’s boldly hallucinogenic, unpredictable series. Given the smart, deliberate escalation of the narrative, along with consistently compelling performances by Malek, Slater, Martin Wallström (as Tyrell) and especially Carly Chaikin (as Darlene), the last two episodes of “Mr. Robot” should be impressive and intense. Catch up.

“The End of the Tour” takes a trip in the minds of writers

ing about both craft and experience. “The End of the Tour” is so tightly focused on this trip that it sidesteps some of the traditional pitfalls of a biopic. This is meant to be a slice of Wallace through the perspective of a man who only knew him through a magazine assignment — and we learn much about Lipsky’s own issues of confidence in facing a brilliant writer. This is essentially a two-man show, so it’s safe to say the movie will be as good as those performances — which are both excellent. Eisenberg’s nebbish and polite demeanor masks the more complex turnings beneath (much like his role in “The Social Network”). But it’s Segal who leaves the biggest impression in a charming yet complex performance that’s far more subtle and layered than you’d expect from an actor who’s done almost exclusively comedy. Director James Ponsoldt (who did the excellent and underseen “The Spectacular Now”) finds a wealth of emotion in a movie that is almost entirely just the conversations of two people and generally avoids any heavy-handed foreshadowing of Wallace’s eventual death by suicide. “The End of the Tour” is a dissection of both the mind of a writer and the nature of an interviewer. This writer recommends it.

There’s a long-standing tendency to romanticize the life of the writer — one often fraught with rejection and selfdoubt, even among those who possess a generational talent, such as that held by the late David Foster Wallace. The culprit for this romanticizing is likely the fact that, well, writers write about writers. “The End of the Tour” is a film adaptation of a memoir written by a journalist about his time with a writer. That’s a lot of layers in that onion. But the film’s unconventional narrative makes it both a fitting tribute to Wallace and an engaging exploration of the human condition — all through the eyes of two writers. The film fittingly opens on the sounds of someone typing on a keyboard. As writer-journalist David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) learns of the death of Wallace, he dusts off the old recordings of an interview he did with the author for Rolling Stone right after the publication of Wallace’s groundbreaking 1996 novel, “Infinite Jest.” A younger Lipsky pitches the piece to a reluctant editor (“This is the sort of stuff I should be doing, not 500 words on boy bands.”) and then drives off to meet a reluctant Wallace (Jason Segal). The two spend the next five days together during Wallace’s book tour for “Jest” in a fascinating trip that blurs the lines between friend and adversary, all under the umbrella of two writers speak-

“American Ultra” gets stoned on tone
By Brad Keefe // @BradAlive I get a fair amount of attentiongrabbing movie studio swag, but the packages I received in the mail for “American Ultra” really, um, grabbed my attention. The first was a hemp bag full of helpful goodies like rolling papers and a stash case; the second was a cup of instant noodles and a spoon. In fairness to the marketing team at Lionsgate, this is not an easy movie to market, so I see why they’re going the “stoner” route, even if that’s not necessarily the best fit. Yes, Mike Howell (Jesse Eisenberg) is stoner, living in a small West Virginia town, working at a convenience store and getting baked with his girlfriend Phoebe (Kristen Stewart). But he is also a sleeper government agent who is “activated” when other agents are sent to liquidate him. It turns out the slacker is also a highly trained killer. “American Ultra” plays in the stoner-comedy-meet-violentaction-flick vein of “The Pineapple
Express,” but it’s all over the map in tone. It alternates laughs, love, explosions and Steven Seagalesque killings — only it’s not as good as that sounds. Director Nima Nourizadeh (“Project X”) may be aiming a little above his talents with action sequences that aspire to John Woo heights, but the real problem is that you don’t know whether to

laugh, cry or duck. Such a mixture of tones is a tough thing to land. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the cast and a violent Bonnie & Clyde love story that hearkened back to when these were en vogue in the ’90s (“True Romance,” “Love and a .45”). But a stoner flick? Yeah, I’m not so sure that’s a fit.

rawing upon Lewis Carroll, William Shakespeare, naughty nursery rhymes, LSD and a corrupt cop as influences, “I Am the Walrus” by The Beatles is very strange song. So when a server at The Walrus told me that the new Downtown restaurant took its name from that mindbending tune, I found it amusing. Like its namesake, The Walrus is a “bit of this, bit of that” patchwork. A
stage for local bands makes it a live music venue. It’s equipped with enough TVs, craft beers and good cocktails (try the refreshing $6 Tomi Collins or potent La Morsa Margarita, $8) to function as an urbane sports pub. Tempting drinks plus a red pool table and hip decor — brick, cool graphic novel-style illustrations (by local artist Paul Giovis) and old Columbus cityscape wallpaper — make The Walrus a fashionable hangout to knock back a few beverages. Outpacing most in town, they’re dual beauties that pack lots of sweet, perfectly firm meat — plus tiny, diced celery for crunch — into buttery toasted, proper New England-style buns (top-loaded). Binding the delicious filling together is a wonderfully light and lemony dressing. The Cauliflower Steak ($10) with zesty sweet potato cubes is a creative vegetarian entree boasting bold flavors from cumin, citrus, a balsamic reduction and a creamy pea puree. I really like how it looped together the Latin, Middle Eastern and even barbecue paths it traveled on. But the tubers were overcooked, and the underdone cauliflower hadn’t lost its raw character. Maybe it should be called “cauliflower steak tartare.” Served with dense and delicious mashers plus a tangy and spicy avocado sauce, the misleadingly titled Prosciutto Roll ($14) — a ham-wrapped chicken roulade with mushrooms plus a bit of pineapple and cheese — was another impressive-looking and flavorful dish with issues. One was minor: inconsequential broccoli. Another was major: nothing on the plate was close to hot. Situated near similarly fashionable South Fourth Street establishments (El Camino, Little Palace) and sharing ownership with a place of which I’m an avowed fan — Olde Towne Tavern — The Walrus has a lot of promise. Now it’s time to fulfill it.

dusky), a little patio and an inexpensive, vegetarian-friendly menu of gussied-up comfort food make The Walrus an appealing restaurant. But unlike that famous Beatles song — in which disparate aspects gelled together to create a classic — one facet of The Walrus doesn’t hit the right notes yet. That would be the well-intentioned but inharmonious service. During one loud and crowded evening, I waited almost an hour for a salad; then another, equally long wait for main courses. On a different night, appetizers and entrees were simultaneously whisked to our suddenly congested table. On multiple visits, food temperatures were way off. To its credit, the management handled these hiccups in gracious fashion. But the bumps kept happening. Flaunting spicy centers, bacon and crackly beer-battered shells, the Deep Fried Deviled Eggs ($7) evoke state fair food and the “I am the eggman” chorus of that Beatles opus. But the playful signature appetizer was hampered by rubbery egg whites, translucent pigmeat plus inordinate oil. The good, fresh and entree-sized Taco Salad ($9) is topped with spicy and salty chorizo, corn, black beans, shredded cheese, tortilla chips and more. It seems designed for discriminating diners who like the idea of a salad but would rather eat nachos. If seeking a pizza, the snack-sized Night Owl flatbread ($12) tops a thin and puffy crust with peppadew peppers, crisp pepperoni plus plenty of molten mozzarella. It’s a spicy, sweet

Hai Poke has taken over the kitchen at Oddfellows Liquor Bar in Short North on Thursdays and Fridays, from 4-9 p.m. through the end of August. The pop-up is serving poke, a traditional Hawaiian dish of raw ahi tuna, soy sauce, vegetables and other seasonings.
North Market announces Dos Hermanos as new vendor
Chef Henry Butcher of Creole Kitchen announced his long-inthe-works sit-down restaurant will open sometime this September. The cajun and creole restaurant – one of the first authentic ones in Columbus – has long operated solely as a carryout at 1052 Mt. Vernon Ave. in the King-Lincoln District. In case you missed it, Explorers Club food truck is taking up permanent residence in the kitchen of Zauber Brewing. Explorers Club closed their brick-and-mortar location at the end of June in order to focus exclusively on the food truck and catering business. Officially titled Explorers Club Kitchen at Zauber Brewing Company, the brewery kitchen will serve old favorites like the mofongo and grilled meatloaf sandwich alongside Bavarianthemed items like pretzels and beer brats with potato salad. Zauber will still occasionally host other food trucks, such as Paddy Wagon on Thursdays, when the kitchen will be closed. The Explorers Club Kitchen will officially open Saturday, Sept. 5 and add lunch service on Sept. 15. Ill Mannered Brewing in Powell announced they are officially opening Friday, Sept. 4, at 5 p.m. At opening, they plan to have five beers on tap: a blonde ale, a Belgian rye, an IPA, a West Coast amber ale and a breakfast stout.
By Nicholas Dekker
Oddfellows Liquor Bar Once open, their regular hours will be Wednesdays through Fridays, 5-10 p.m., and Saturdays from noon to 8 p.m. This Saturday, Aug. 22, is the Summer Session, hosted by the Grandview Craft Beer Alliance. The outdoor beer tasting focuses on session beers (roughly 5 percent alcohol by volume or lower) served by central Ohio breweries. The event also features live music and food from ManBQue, Por’Ketta, Matt the Miller’s Tavern, Rime Time Pops and more. Sunday, Aug. 23 Brothers Drake Meadery releases three new coffee meads made with One Line Coffee, Boston Stoker Coffee and Rising Star Coffee out of Cleveland. Beginning at 11 a.m. the coffee meads will be available by the bottle and in flights.

The new Bareburger location is starting demolition on the site at 4560 N. High St. in Clintonville. The new building will house the restaurant — the second Bareburger in central Ohio — on the main floor and eight apartments above it. It is slated to open sometime in spring of 2016. The new Polaris Bar Louie is now open at 1611 Polaris Parkway, former site of Fisherman’s Wharf. Catie Randazzo of Challah food truck will appear on Food Network’s Cutthroat Kitchen at 10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23. Colorado-based Door to Door Organics will start Columbus deliveries at the end of September. Door to Door draws on local farmers to supply organic groceries to your home.
The North Market announced that Dos Hermanos taco truck will open a permanent stall in the market. Dos Hermanos has been operating for the past three years around Columbus, with regular appearances at the Ohio Stadium for football games, at Mapfre Stadium for Columbus Crew SC matches and at Seventh Son Brewing. Now owners Lisa and Vincente Gutierrez will make their home on the south end of the market, between Brezel and Omega Artisan Baking, former site of Expressly Market Bakery. Lisa Gutierrez said in a press release, “As frequent market shoppers, my husband and I enjoy the upbeat and culturally diverse atmosphere, but felt there was a missing
element, representation of Latin American fare. We saw an opportunity with an open space at the market and decided to throw our hat in ring.” The stall is slated to open Oct. 1. The menu fill feature tacos, tamales, chile rellenos and salsa. The truck will remain in operation as well. With Dos Hermanos’ opening, the market is again at capacity. Most recently, Little Eater Produce and Provisions opened in the former Greener Grocer space. Nicholas Dekker writes about breakfast, beer and Columbus at breakfastwithnick.com.
