Five ‘tales FroM the vault’ hiGhliGhts

By Caitlin MCGurk and Jenny roBB In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum curators Jenny Robb and Caitlin McGurk created “Tales from the Vault: 40 Years/40 Stories.” The exhibit explores 40 unique stories from the history of comics and cartooning; the artists and writers who created them; the people who collected them; and their impact on the audience that read them.

Superduperman, Mad no. 4, 1953 (original art) This beloved satirical story by Harvey Kurtzman and Wally Wood lampooned popular superhero characters like DC’s Superman and Fawcett Comics’ Captain Marvel. It was the first Mad parody of its kind, and the story had a significant positive impact on the magazine’s sales in its infancy. “Superduperman” set the standard of humor for which Mad became known.

“We Have Met the Enemy and He Is Us,” Walt Kelly’s “Pogo,” April 22, 1971 (original art) Walt Kelly’s funny animal comic strip “Pogo” provided a surprising but effective setting for his incisive political satire. Kelly coined the phrase “We Have Met the Enemy and He Is Us” (a play on a quote from Commander Oliver Perry) for an anti-pollution Earth Day poster in 1970 and used it again in his comic strip on Earth Day 1971.

The saying caught the collective imagination of the public and is still used today.

The First African-American Comic Book, All-Negro Comics, June 1947 Former journalist Orrin Cromwell Evans founded All-Negro Comics, Inc. and published the first known comic book featuring all African-American artists and writers. This 48-page issue features a variety of stories and characters, including Ace Harlem, a dashing, heroic police detective who fights for justice in his city. On the title page, Evans published a note to readers that read, in part, “Every brush stroke and pen line in the drawings on

these pages are by Negro artists. … This publication is another milestone in the splendid history of Negro journalism.”

Handmade Heroes Captain America cosplay costume, circa 1940s Larry Ivie was a comics historian, writer, artist and collector extraordinaire. In his youth, Ivie designed and sewed superhero costumes which are some of the earliest examples of cosplay.

Among his many talents, Ivie was also an amateur filmmaker. He and his friends recreated popular comic book stories in costumes like the Captain America one on display and recorded them on 8mm films, which are also held in The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum collection.

“Goldie: A Neurotic Woman” (original art) Aline Kominsky-Crumb is the mother of women’s autobiographical comics.

Kominsky-Crumb’s earliest comics focus on Goldie, a caricatured version of the artist that exaggerated every aspect of a post-pubescent, self-conscious

and over-sexed young woman.

Kominsky-Crumb’s first story, “Goldie: A Neurotic Woman,” appeared in 1972 in the premier issue of Wimmen’s Comix, the first series to be entirely produced by women. Kominsky-Crumb also contributed to Arcade, Weirdo, and other early counterculture comics

of the time, and she went on to collaborate with her husband Robert Crumb on a series titled Dirty Laundry. Her work was groundbreaking and opened the gates for women to be gritty, sexual, crude and downright disgusting, at times, but above all: honest, brave and real.

Stephen Arthur he loves by foot or via a quick bus ride.

But in late March he was forced out of Bollinger Tower because last year, the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) entered into a contract to sell the building for $14 million to Schiff Capital Group (in partnership with Continental Real Estate). All 98 residents would have to be relocated to other properties.

Less than a dozen Bollinger tenants will remain at the end of April, and by mid-May or so, all 100 units in the 11-story building will sit empty and the low-income, senior residents will be scattered across Central Ohio. After CMHA and Schiff Capital close on the sale of Bollinger this summer, the building will begin its transformation from an affordable-housing high-rise to an upscale Cambria Suites hotel.

Bollinger’s sale raises questions for CMHA, Short North residents and businesses, developers and city officials about Columbus’ aging population and the need for affordable housing. To what length should a housing authority go to bring in much-needed cash? What is a city’s responsibility to its poor, elderly citizens?

Is there inherent value in young, condodwelling Short North residents running into seniors from a different socioeconomic level outside coffee houses and bars and shops and galleries?

After nearly five years in Bollinger Tower, Stephen Arthur is no longer there. Were he and the other 90-plus Bollinger residents neighborhood outliers? Or essential threads in the fabric of their community?

II.

Bollinger’s conversion to a hotel brings the Short North property full circle. In the summer of 1982, CMHA purchased the New Francis Hotel, which the housing authority had previously leased, for $580,000 in order to build affordable housing for elderly residents.

In early 1984, the agency began a $4 million project to raze the hotel and erect “Bollinger Towers,” named for former CMHA Director and Assistant Secretary of HUD Stephen J. Bollinger, who died of a heart attack at age 36 in June of 1984. The high-rise was completed in the spring of 1985, and residents began filling its 100, one-bedroom apartments that fall.

Back in the 1980s and for decades prior, the Short North didn’t resemble the trendy, arts-driven enclave and swanky dining haven it is today. Crime was rampant. Headlines from the era speak of armed robberies at the New Francis Hotel. In the early days of Bollinger, residents quarreled over accusations that tenants were bringing in prostitutes under the guise of young, female relatives visiting the tower as guests. As recently as 2004, an 82-yearold Bollinger resident was found stabbed to death in her apartment.

But in the ’90s, art galleries gained a foothold in the Short North. Over time, restaurants and retail shops followed. As the neighborhood morphed from slum to hotspot, developers seized the opportunity, adding upscale apartments, condos and hotels. Along the way, Bollinger went from

an affordable housing high-rise in a blighted area to coveted real estate in the heart of a thriving, up-and-coming neighborhood.

“It was a challenge to try to figure out a way to get the Short North to feel good about low-income housing in that area, in the heart of it all,” said Jeff Hogle, property manager at Bollinger from 2012 to 2014. “But I think over time, the Short North — the immediate neighbors — realized that Bollinger Tower wasn’t such a terrible thing.”

During Gallery Hop, the first Saturday of every month, Bollinger residents would entertain passersby in the front courtyard. “They had some folks who were pretty talented come out and show off their talents,” said Reed Woogerd of Corso Ventures, which operates the nearby Short North Pint House, Forno Kitchen & Bar and Standard Hall.

“There was one guy who had an amazing old-school country record collection.

He would come out and sing along for people — just these really enchanting, endearing moments.”

The building got an exterior facelift in 2009, and though occasional crimerelated quarrels continued (especially since security guards were removed due to federal budget cuts), much of the relational tensions inside Bollinger eased when, in August of 2010, CMHA changed Bollinger from a site that housed senior citizens and tenants of varying ages with disabilities (including those with drug and alcohol addictions and mental illnesses) to an elderly-only facility.

tephen Arthur gets up at 6 a.m. every day, and by 6:45 he’s out the door and walking. Until recently, he lived on the eighth floor at Bollinger Tower in the Short North with other elderly residents who require subsidized housing, and his morning walk to Kroger checked three boxes: exercise, coffee (the second of three daily cups) and a mandatory reading of The New York Times.

Arthur, a 71-year-old vegetarian and fitness fanatic, particularly looks forward to the wellness-related stories by Gretchen Reynolds in the Times’ Science section every Tuesday. He doesn’t just casually read Reynolds. Her stories inform his lifestyle choices. When Reynolds wrote that the new recommendation for the number of steps to take per day was 15,000 instead of 10,000, Arthur looked for ways to up his already-ambitious walking regimen, which usually brought him back to Bollinger between 9 and 9:30 a.m.

On Tuesday afternoons, Arthur participated in a “Bingo-size” class — a weekly combination of bingo and exercise at Bollinger that supplemented his walking and nightly push-ups, sit-ups, weightlifting and balance exercises. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, he attends a tuition-free political science class through the Program 60 initiative at Ohio State University — the same school that drew Arthur to Columbus from Mansfield in 1962. And on Thursday mornings he meets one of his previous OSU instructors for coffee and a chat (they take turns buying the coffee, $4.20 total).

Frequently, Arthur attends performances by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, which once employed him in its ticket office, and his close friend of many years, Susanna Robbins, also takes him to the ballet and the opera.

“I appreciate the arts a great deal, always have. And that’s why I like being able to take the bus Downtown and go to Columbus Symphony concerts,” Arthur said on a Friday afternoon in early March, surrounded by tables stacked with donated baked goods on the first floor of Bollinger Tower. “The rest of the people in this building don’t have any interest in those things. They worry about the bread.

But the bread of life is not just that.”

“The elderly residents did not like living with people with special needs,” said CMHA Chief Operating Officer Bryan Brown, citing residents’ concerns over mentally ill neighbors and complaints of tenants urinating in the elevators.

At the same time, CMHA also converted Bollinger from public housing (Section 9) to a project-based voucher site (Section 8), meaning that residents’ rental assistance would no longer be tied to the building itself.

“With project-based voucher sites, if you live there for a year and you’re in good standing, you can move with a voucher wherever you want. You get portability. You get choice,” Brown said.

The voucher conversion is a fundingmodel strategy CMHA is implementing across the board as it seeks to convert its public housing properties, which have been federally underfunded for

decades, to project-based Section 8 housing via a HUD program.

After Bollinger’s 2010 conversion, new residents were required to be 62 and older. Tenants paid 30 percent of their adjusted monthly income in rent and utilities, which, according to the housing agency, averages at $282 per month for seniors in CMHA public housing. Stephen Arthur, for instance, paid $203.

While Bollinger tenants and other Short North residents and businesses seemed to coexist in relative peace, the building itself was becoming a financial strain on the housing authority. As rents stayed relatively static, maintenance costs rose due to issues with elevators, boilers, the HVAC system, roof and plumbing. In all, Brown estimates the building needed $5 million of work, which the agency didn’t have.

“People look at the outside and say, ‘That’s a nice-looking building!’” Brown said. “But it’s got issues. We don’t advertise that because we’re doing the best we can, but it had issues.”

“It’s a tough building to maintain,” said Hogle, who recalled constant maintenance issues and flooded apartments during his time as property manager. “All the plumbing was located in the cinderblock walls, and it was a huge challenge trying to find the problem.”

As CMHA struggled to maintain Bollinger, developers began making offers on the tower, which the Franklin County Auditor values at around $4 million.

“We were not looking to sell Bollinger,” said Scott Scharlach, CMHA’s vice president of asset management.

Nevertheless, offers came in, and while the first two or three weren’t too enticing, an unofficial bidding war on a not-for-sale Section 8 high-rise led to an offer the housing agency couldn’t refuse.

“We start responding: ‘It’s not for sale. We’re not interested.’ Then they offer you $10 million,” said Brown, who eventually told developers, ‘If we were to sell it, we would have to get absolute top dollar for it. What is that?’ And it went up to $14 million.”

According to CMHA, proceeds from the sale of the tower will enable the agency to house a minimum of 300 people as opposed to Bollinger’s 100 residents. That math convinced the CMHA board, and in February of last year the housing authority went into contract with Schiff Capital (Schiff did not respond to requests for comment).

CMHA speaks of the decision to sell as a no-brainer partly because more than 17,000 Central Ohioans are currently waiting for housing choice vouchers, and nearly 7,000 are on the public housing waiting list, according to data compiled by CMHA Vice President of Planning and Development Roberta Garber, in conjunction with the Affordable Housing Alliance of Central Ohio.

Columbus is in desperate need of affordable housing. For every subsidized rental unit, there are three renters who need it, said Garber, adding that the people on the waiting list are even poorer than those CMHA currently houses, whose yearly income averages between $13,000 and $14,000.

So while CMHA staffers say they were fully aware of and understand the community perception that the agency was plucking 100 low-income senior citizens from a building they loved without giving residents a say in the matter, while at the same time further gentrifying a neighborhood that developers continue to upscale at breakneck speed, they also chose not to overly concern themselves with that perception. Thousands upon thousands of impoverished Columbus residents need cheaper places to live, and CMHA’s mission is not to weigh the demographics of the Short North. The agency is tasked with providing high-quality, affordable housing to those in need.

“Our clients are not just the people we house. Our clients are the people we can’t house, too,” Garber said. “[Bollinger residents] have to move out of their neighborhood, but they’re in decent, affordable housing. And it lets us serve two more people for every person that was there. That’s compelling.”

“Bollinger was our flagship building. … We care about our Bollinger residents very, very much, and we understand the challenges and how hard it is for those folks to move,” Brown said. “I can clearly say nobody here loves this transaction. Having said that, we’re here to fulfill a mission, and you do the best you can with the variables that you’re dealing with.”

Local agencies that serve Columbus’ senior citizens reacted to the sale with a mix of understanding and concern. “We understand that CMHA has economic reasons for doing this, and we certainly can respect those reasons,” said Cindy Farson, director of the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging. “But for seniors, this is a very tough thing. We have over 50 clients that are housed at Bollinger, and they have established themselves in the neighborhood like everyone does.”

“Any time we lose senior housing in Franklin County it’s problematic,” said Antonia Carroll, director of the Franklin County Office on Aging. “Sadly, I think the older people in Bollinger really enjoyed the proximity to Downtown and good bus access. Older people enjoyed it for the same reasons younger people like to live there. I regret that that opportunity has been lost for older adults in Franklin County.”

A few said their tight-knit group functioned “like a family.”

Happy Fuller lived in Bollinger for five years. “I loved every part of it,” the 67-year-old said, adding he was a frequent customer of One Line Coffee, located just across High Street from the tower. “I shouldn’t be forced from my apartment.”

In March, Woogerd of Corso Ventures hosted a buffet for Bollinger residents at the Short North Pint House. “We ended up buying them dinner and then afterwards

bought them gift cards to Wal-Mart in case they needed any essentials while they were moving. We felt like that was the best way to help them,” Woogerd said. “I’m certainly going to miss the interaction I had with all those folks. ... The diversity of the Short North has always been one of its charms.”

“It’s sad to see that element of the Short North’s diversity being ripped away,” said Mick Evans, managing partner of One Line Coffee. While Evans acknowledged that his shop could potentially benefit from a hotel’s rotating customer base, he also said there are “serious ethical issues to be explored.”

“CMHA has a net benefit from the sale, and they’re able to [house] some additional people on the waiting list.

That’s a good thing,” he said. “But the nature of the situation requires that current tenants have to make a sacrifice, and the residents didn’t get to choose to make that sacrifice. They were asked to forgo their community for the sake of 300 other people.

“I see this as a good thing for business, and affordable housing in general, but I see it as coming at the expense of the humanity of the 100 residents at Bollinger.”

Stephen Arthur and the other Bollinger residents were notified of the pending sale and their forced relocation via an informational flyer in late February of last year, and about a week later, CMHA held a meeting to go over when the relocation process would begin (January of 2017) and what assistance the agency would provide.

“They were concerned about having to relocate and move,” Scharlach said.

“Certain residents understood the reason behind why we’re doing this more than others did.”

CMHA tried to soften the blow and smooth the process by hiring consultant Rosetta Brown of R.H. Brown to handle the relocation. Brown set up an office onsite, conducted interviews with residents and held a housing fair to help them find a new place to live. She arranged visits to other sites, and once they picked their spots, Brown arranged moving trucks and scheduled moving dates.

All moving-related expenses — including packing, unpacking, new security deposits, boxes, tape and the move to a new unit — are covered by CMHA. And if residents settled on a new location by April 15, the agency promised to give them an extra $500 stipend.

“Change is very challenging, particularly because these are seniors. It’s hard for seniors to pick up and go to a new community,” Rosetta Brown said. “We try to be sensitive to that and try to make it as easy as possible, because they’re going into communities where, in some cases, they don’t know anyone and have to start over.”

In early March, Stephen Arthur was not looking forward to the massive disruption in his routine. He’d have to find a new walking route, a new place to get coffee, a new grocery store. Traveling to Ohio State and to his friend Susanna Robbins’ house by COTA bus would take much longer.

“It’s not what I wanna do,” Arthur said. “I’m gonna have a hard time getting transportation after the concerts if I go alone.”

In interviews with several other former Bollinger tenants, some of whom asked not to be named, each said he or she would stay put if given the option.

They cited the COTA stop in front the building, the easy access to amenities and the sense of community at Bollinger

On Stephen Arthur’s first day at his new apartment in Lexington Park, just off Henderson Road on the Northwest Side, he made the 16-minute walk to a nearby Starbucks for coffee and The New York Times.

On his way in, someone in the drive-through line paid for his coffee. He relished the warm welcome from his new community. But on the way back, while crossing the street, he tripped.

“I fell right on my face.

I felt my nose being compressed. I was bleeding profusely,” he said. Onlookers came to his aid, providing washcloths to stem the blood flow. One stranger gave him a ride home afterward.

The fall slowed him down, but only for a week or so toward the end of March.

“They told me to take it easy, but they don’t understand.

Easy and me, we don’t get along,” he said.

Arthur’s daily journey to coffee and knowledge requires fewer steps than his previous Short North route did, and sidewalks in this new community are few and far between, which has hampered his exercise routine a bit. “I don’t care for walking on grass, dirt, mud and stones,” he said, and exercising at nearby Life Time Fitness just isn’t the same.

Still, Arthur isn’t one to complain. A trip and fall is counterbalanced by kindness from his neighbors. Plus, he’s too busy to sulk. There are boxes to unpack and vegetarian pasta to cook in his new, all-beige, two-bedroom apartment. When he needs a break from moving tasks, he listens to classical music. “I don’t think he has as much interaction with people as he had [at Bollinger],” she said. “It’s been very difficult for him. He’s had trouble getting back into the routine.

Yesterday he forgot some of the vegetables he needed and had a frozen dinner meal instead. It’s gonna take him some time.”

CMHA officials use the term “choice mobility.” With a voucher, residents can go wherever they want. But for most Bollinger residents, what they wanted was to stay. They didn’t have a choice. And yet, by the end of April, all but 10 or so former Bollinger residents will be situated in affordable housing of their choosing, and those relocations will allow CMHA to house more of the thousands waiting in the queue.

The Short North won’t look drastically different without Bollinger. Renderings show modest improvements to the existing structure.

When the hotel is completed, out-of-towners and infrequent visitors likely won’t bat an eye. It’ll probably fit right in with The Joseph hotel and the Short North’s luxury apartments and condos — more so, in fact, than Bollinger did.

Bollinger was one of the last remnants of a now-bygone era of the Short North, and while no one pines for the days of police blotters littered with break-ins and assaults, the tower and its residents conveyed a sense of history and grit that’s now missing, and citizens are left to wrestle with the implications of displacing low-income seniors who had front-row seats to a neighborhood transformation that eventually priced them out.

the afternoon of October 13, 2016, a drive-by shooting took place in front of Linden-McKinley STEM Academy as the high school students were being dismissed. The shots injured a 15-year-old and 12-year-old. Two 16-yearolds were later charged with felonious assault.

“My people are dying at high rates,” said Jasmine Ayres, one of 10 candidates running for three open City Council seats in the May 2 primary election. The 26-year-old North Side native wasn’t planning to run so early in her career, but the shooting spurred her to act.

borhoods during summer months. The program, recently extended year-round, has been challenged by some community members in light of the police-involved killing of Henry Green in Linden last year.

“If you’ve had this program for [over 10 years] and crime is still going up every summer, that tells me that your program is not effective and that maybe you should be listening to the people in your city,” said Ayres, who also wants to see stronger efforts to recruit minority police officers. “And if they want an increased police presence, I would like to see [them] on bikes or on foot. Get to know the community, walk around [and] talk to them.”

Ayres said it’s important that neighborhoods of color like Linden view her as an advocate. “I think these communities have just been paid a lot of lip service,” she said. “They deserve to have all the benefits that the city has to offer.”

That includes greater access to jobs, another major part of Ayres’ platform, which pushes for tax incentives for small-business owners.

Though candidates do not have to declare political affiliation for the primary election, Ayres has been endorsed by Yes We Can Columbus, a progressive Democratic organization. The Franklin County Democratic Party has already endorsed the party’s incumbents.

“It has been amazing,” Ayres said of her experience running so far, and credits her friends, family and team members for their ongoing support.

“I got a chance to get some insight into [Ayres’] mindset and just her passion for helping people,” said local attorney Sean Walton, who represents Henry Green’s family. He met Ayres through her service work regarding communitypolice relations.

“I think her educational background in public policy is a huge asset to the city, but also the fact that she’s not a part of the status quo,” Walton continued.

“I think the fact that she brings some unique and independent thought to the Council only moves our city forward.”

“I had really convinced myself that I didn’t want to get into politics,” Ayres said. “It just seems like a critical time in history and I love this city and I feel like I’m doing it for the right reasons. I just want to save people’s lives.”

“There are very traumatic things that we’re not responding to,” she said.

If elected, Ayres wants to curb violence among teens by investing more of the city’s resources into proven afterschool and mentorship programs. “Our [Recreation and Parks Department] programming is amazing, but there are times when they don’t have the staff they want to do certain things,” she said. “If kids are coming to a place to be peaceful, there should never be an issue with that.”

Much of Ayres’ campaign focuses on her passion for helping children, which was fostered by her grandmother and mother, both teachers.

“I love kids,” Ayres said. “They’re brilliant and they’re funny and they ask the best questions.”

For two years, Ayres has been coaching football at Northland High School, where she once played sports before graduating as valedictorian. “This was an amazing place to me, which is why I’ve come back,” said Ayres, who went on to earn a master’s degree in public affairs from the University of Texas.

But not all of her recent experiences at Northland have been positive.

“One of the young men that I was coaching was shot and killed a year and a half ago, just walking home from a friend’s house,” Ayres said. “Some of the other boys heard the shots that killed their friend, and you just can’t expect them to have a normal rest of the year. …

We need to make sure we have resources [to help] them.”

In addition to advocating for treatment and trauma recovery programs for students, Ayres has worked with the Juvenile Justice Coalition to incorporate restorative justice practices in schools.

“Restorative justice introduces the personal aspect of these kids’ lives more into the classroom,” Ayres said.

“They’re dealing with a lot, and sometimes they just need to go sit in a quiet room for 15 minutes … because that might save them from going off on a teacher and getting suspended. And the goal is to keep them in school.”

Despite the frequent gun-related crimes she is seeing in the North and Northeast areas of Columbus, Ayres is calling for a stop to the city’s Community Safety Initiative, which increases the number of police — including plainclothes officers — in high-crime neigh-

Columbus Crew SC fans might not have realized just how much their team relied on Artur until they couldn’t rely on him anymore.

The 21-year-old Brazilian is not the type who racks up impressive stats, but he had become a mainstay of Coach Gregg Berhalter’s lineup since joining the Crew on loan from Sao Paulo FC — the type of midfielder who holds a team together with raw skill and box-to-box hustle. When he broke his wrist less than a minute into Saturday’s 2-0 loss at New York Red Bulls, Columbus didn’t have a suitable replacement for him. (Sorry, Mohammed Abu.) Unfortunately for Crew SC, Artur will miss the three-game homestand that begins this Saturday against New York City FC, so they’ll have to figure something out.

The silver lining: Artur’s absence highlights what a positive addition he’s been.

He’s not alone. Niko Hansen, a 22-year-old winger drafted from the University of New Mexico, worked his way into a starting role with energetic, creative flank play. He scored the gamewinner against Portland in his MLS debut and logged a gorgeous assist versus Toronto in his first start. For now, Berhalter seems convinced Hansen offers something Ethan Finlay can’t.

Hansen’s fellow rookie Alex Crognale, a 22-year-old Homegrown Player from Gahanna, has been similarly impressive stepping into the centerback role intended for Designated Player signee Jonathan Mensah. With Mensah unavailable at DC United, Crognale impressed in his first start, winning Man of the Match honors in a fan vote. Now that Mensah is back to full health, Crognale continues to start.

And then there’s Zack Steffen, the 22-year-old goalkeeper acquired last summer from Germany’s SC Freiburg II. He’s made some rookie mistakes, most notably letting a saveable shot cascade off his body and into net at Chicago.

But overall his athletic, intuitive play suggests he could evolve into a franchise goalie someday.

The immediate effect of so many young players stepping up has been a depth that was sorely lacking in 2016. By supplanting the likes of Finlay (a former MLS All-Star) and Mensah (a veteran of two World Cups) in the starting lineup, these young bucks are essentially supplying Columbus with a stacked bench.

And who knows what all these minutes for the youth brigade might mean longterm? Fans can excitedly imagine the contender Columbus might gel into by season’s end if all this youthful potential continues to go kinetic.

Bringing tattoo artists together I’ve always enjoyed bringing the tattoo community together and showing others the amazing world of tattooing and the artists behind it. Columbus Museum of Art Columbus is a very diverse and artistfriendly city, which I’ve always loved for its acceptance of alternative lifestyles and art. Columbus has an amazing art museum and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city. The recent addition of the Margaret M. Walter Wing has taken the museum to a new level and allows for even more art to be featured.

Tattoo competitions at Hell City I love watching all the tattoo competitions to see the incredible inking done by amazing tattoo artists. It’s a great moment when people “enter their skin to win” awards among their fellow tattoo enthusiasts. These moments make people very proud of their tattoos, and are great for both the tattoo artist and the collector.

The local art community The local art community has embraced The Hell City Tattoo Fest since its inception, and in turn Hell City has helped to grow the local tattooing and art community by leaps and bounds by showing tattooing in its best form.

Baseball I was obsessed with baseball as a kid. I obsessed over Rickey Henderson and Ken Griffey Jr. baseball cards and played catch with my brother until we couldn’t see the ball. Then I quit baseball entirely at around 12. Recently, my son has shown an interest in baseball, particularly catching pop flies and watching the Indians on TV. I had forgotten what a great game it is, and I’m loving the leisurely pace of the game even more as an adult. Go Tribe.

I was reminded of them when Jeff Smith brought them up in our interview for this issue’s piece on the Billy Ireland Museum’s 40th anniversary. I was at home for the interview, and I could literally see the box in which mine are stored when Smith brought them up.

–Jim Fischer Founder’s Sumatra Mountain Brown I stumbled onto this brown ale grocery shopping recently and it’s fantastic. Rich, kinda nutty and packing an unmistakable (and welcome) coffee bitterness. I’m not saying I would drink this with breakfast. But could I? Yes. Yes I could.

–Andy Downing Comedy in Columbus I’ve had the privilege of attending two comedy shows in the city recently: “Lay Off My Labia!” and “Thanks Obama 3.” The diverse cast of characters (comedian Bianca Moore was at both shows, which was a plus) was hilarious and demonstrated that Columbus has a rich comedy scene. I’m looking forward to learning more.

rom an early age, Malcolm London understood the power inherent in his first name.

“I’ve got a helluva name to live up to,” he raps near the onset of his debut full-length, Opia, from 2016.

“My mom watched ‘Malcolm X’ in the theater as I was growing inside her belly and she said, ‘That’s what I’m going to name my baby,’” said the 24-year-old Chicago-born rapper, poet and activist, who visits the Basement for a concert on Saturday, April 29. “Even at a young age, I knew who Malcolm X was, and that name and legacy is a powerful one.”

But that power didn’t translate to action until London turned 16 and discovered the Louder Than a Bomb poetry festival, which was co-founded in 2001 by fellow Chicagoan Kevin Coval, who served as an early mentor to London, introducing the teenager to black authors like James Baldwin and Gwendolyn Brooks. “[Coval] taught me to study other writers and see how the personal connects to the political, and how the political ultimately connects to the global,” said London, who, after discovering the form, regularly took the bus 40 minutes from his West Side neighborhood of Austin to Wicker Park on the North Side in order to attend open mic poetry events.

Opia, which finds the rapper embracing his story as a means to talk about larger social and political issues. Witness the atmospheric “Charlie,” which opens with a sample lifted from Charlie Chaplin’s “The Great Dictator” speech — “Don’t give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you and slave you, who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel” — before London details his arrest at a Black Lives Matter protest, placing it within the context of a larger global struggle for human rights. As the song closes, singer Christian Jalon swoops in with a verse that doubles as a raised fist: “We’re gonna rise up/And we’re gonna shut them down.”

“I went to school with mostly Latino and black kids as a young person, and then I got into Lincoln Park High School and I was one of eight brown faces,” said London, who acknowledged he’d always known the differences between the races because growing up in America white people are generally seen in places of power, be it “on my TV or on my dollar bill.” “[But] when I went to Lincoln Park High School, that’s when I really learned what inequity looked like. Seeing all my friends, who were white and who I loved, I just noticed our narratives were different.

They’d talk about their summer trips to Italy, and on my side of the city we talked about whose funeral we just went to.

“Seeing those things, I started to see how race and classism were intertwined. I think seeing the two sides of Chicago, it made me want to bridge that gap. It wasn’t that I wanted anybody on the North Side or anyone I went to high school with to have any less, but it was only natural that it occurred to me we didn’t have enough.”

Despite London’s willingness to wade into these weightier issues, his music is still imbued with a deep optimism, the more somber moments balanced by fluttering cuts like “House Party,” a goodtimes tune that lives up to its joyous, confetti-strewn title.

“I don’t like feeling helpless, though often I do,” London said. “It’s easy to get bogged down and feel like things aren’t changing. But, for me at least, when I’m in classrooms educating, and I see young people who are discovering themselves — even in all this darkness — it helps me realize our humanity is stronger than everything else. Or at least I like to think so.”

“When I dropped that song, there was a young man in Madison, Wisconsin who had just been recently killed by police. I think even in this moment people have to understand we’re all affected by this thing, whether you’re a cop or [a citizen],” London said. “As the [Chaplin] speech goes, there are bigger things at play. Essentially, we’re all a part of a game that’s being played.”

London initially took up poetry at 14 as a means to impress girls, developing a greater understanding of the form’s potential once he started attending open mics.

“I figured out that all the questions I had as a high schooler and a teenager could be answered or at least explored through poetry. Why does the world look the way it does? Why is it that where I live looks a lot different than other parts of the city? Why are the people that look like me disadvantaged?” said London, who was born to a telemarketer mother and a father who works for the Chicago Transit Authority. “Oftentimes we’re OK with the falsehoods we’re taught, but I refused to believe that the people that I grew up around and that I knew and loved were just inherently violent or were supposed to fail. Poetry helped me ask those questions and allowed me to articulate those ideas.”

From the onset, London employed his work as a means to tell his story, offering a window into a neighborhood and a culture he often viewed as missing from the conversation.

“Being from the West Side of Chicago, I grew up thinking my story was misrepresented or underrepresented,” said London, who counts fellow neighborhood dwellers like Chance the Rapper, Nico Segal (aka Donnie Trumpet) and Noname among his biggest musical influences. “That inspired me to want to tell the story of the West Side. … I think stories often become history, and history is too often told by one homogeneous group. And that has to be disrupted in order for the truth to live.”

Opia, in turn, delves into issues of racial inequity, poverty and loss — on “Get It Right” the rapper mourns the loss of an aunt, an uncle and a close friend, all of whom died within a year. Other songs deal more explicitly with race — “I am a profound, pro-black pronoun/Malcolm X

“Everybody wants to have a purpose,” Tymework raps in a conversational style on “And So, I Spoke,” which borrows its atmospheric instrumental from an XXXtentacion track. “What if you’ve known yours and fought for it for years but feel that you don’t deserve it?”

Though Tymework, born Jonathyn Arthurs 20 years ago, is speaking more broadly about human ambition, he could just as easily be detailing the internal drive that pushes him to continue to pursue music through financial upheaval, emotional unrest and the nagging self-doubts that can often accompany the creative process.

“[Music’s] one of those things I’ve contemplated quitting many times and I just can’t do it. It’s part of me,” said Tymework, who visits Double Happiness on Saturday, April 29, playing in support of his new full-length, Isosceles. “I don’t know if it’s just because it’s all I know, or if it’s just really embedded in me. I like to think it’s the latter option. I really think it is.”

The process of making Isosceles — a nearly two-year ordeal that included a May 2016 van accident, a low five-figure financial investment and a months-long period where the rapper struggled with problems both at home and in his romantic life — tested this bond.

“Everything took a tumble and I just went and laid low for a

minute,” said Tymework, who was born in Groveport, raised by a bank employee mother and a father who worked as a welder.

Tymework’s retreat started following the May accident, which happened after he fell asleep at the wheel commuting to work. “I was working 40 minutes from my house and 68 hours a week just nonstop,” said the rapper, who crashed 500 feet from his jobsite. “[After the accident] I figured I’d take a break and focus on finishing the album, and it just never happened.”

Instead, Tymework stepped back for six or seven months before resuming recording in late 2016, weaving together personal songs (he wrestles with depression on the harrowing “The Purist”) and narrative tales informed by his love of storytelling. On the keyboard-spiked “Enemy Soil,” the MC unravels the story of a soldier torn between duty and the mental strain of being forced to take enemy life on the battlefield.

Guest rappers pop up throughout — Killah Priest, Chino XL and Diabolic included — but the perspective is Tymework’s own, shaped by a fondness for the darker sounds that initially led him to pursue a death metal project as a youngster.

“My first album was called Nowhere, and it was about [my father’s 2003] death and everything I went through coming off it,” said the rapper, who released the project under the name the Dark and the Bleak.

“I cover a lot of the same topics [in hip-hop], and it’s still a darker form of music. It does allow a touch more of the softer side to show, though, because you can’t really do anything soft in death metal. You can move all over the place in hip-hop, and that’s something I’ve found I like about it.”

By Joel oliphint Back in the ’90s, after the dissolution of previous band the Blake Babies, Boston rocker Juliana Hatfield gained a cult following with accessible, MTV-ready alt-rock hits like “Spin the Bottle” and “Sister.” She formed other groups over the years (the Juliana Hatfield Three, Juliana’s Pony and the morerecent Minor Alps, a duo with Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws) and even reunited the Blake Babies in the 2000s, but her early- to mid-’90s material remains her best-known work.

Hatfield will release new album Pussycat just two days before her Ace of Cups show on Sunday, April 30. She’s not one to shy away from controversial topics, so it’s no surprise this record

addresses the current political climate. New single “Short-Fingered Man,” for instance, is undoubtedly a reference to our country’s president, who has reportedly harbored deep insecurities about his hands ever since Graydon Carter referred to him as a “short-fingered vulgarian” in Spy magazine years ago. “Short-fingered man can’t get her off,” goes the chorus. Perhaps, like Carter, Hatfield can expect to receive photos on which the former business mogul has circled his hands in gold Sharpie.

The new record by Guided by Voices, August by Cake, is said to be Bob Pollard’s 100th studio album and his first double LP. Over the course of those 100 releases, Doug Gillard’s name pops up frequently.

Gillard, a Sandusky native, grew up playing in punk bands, and in the 1980s he was a founding member of influential Cleveland post-punk trio Death of Samantha, led by John Petkovic, who also recruited Gillard to play guitar in his 1990s band Cobra Verde.

Down in Dayton, Pollard was a fan of Death of Samantha, and after Guided by Voices’ original lineup split, Cobra Verde became GBV’s backing band, resulting in 1997’s classic Mag Earwhig! (Gillard wrote album standout “I am a Tree”). For the next several years, Gillard continued collaborating with Pollard on Guided

by Voices releases, along with side projects billed as Lifeguards.

Guided by Voices’ lineup has changed frequently over the years,

and last summer Gillard was invited to join ranks again. The revamped lineup — Pollard, guitarist Gillard, guitarist Bobby Bare Jr., drummer Kevin March and bassist Mark Shue — will bring its current tour to Skully’s Music-Diner on Friday, April 28. DTCV, featuring one-time GBV bassist (and now Columbus resident) Jim Greer and local hero Kyle Sowash, opens the show.

For August by Cake’s 32 tracks, Gillard said that Pollard asked each member to come up with two songs. The bulk of the tracks were recorded as a band in New York.

“Bob writes differently depending on who’s in the band,” Gillard said by phone. “He kind of tailors the songs he writes. Sometimes he feels like he doesn’t have the freedom to write certain types of songs depending on who’s in the band.

That’s when he tends to have a lot of solo projects and things with other musicians coming out. I think he feels now, with this lineup, he doesn’t really need to have a lot of other side projects. He doesn’t re-

ally have that desire because he has everything he needs in this band.”

Gillard is no stranger to Columbus, having played long-gone Stache’s with Death of Samantha a couple of times. He also played a birthday party in the basement of Bernie’s in 1998 with Guided

by Voices. But even before that, as a teen in growing up in northeast Ohio, Gillard traveled down to Columbus for two special shows: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ firstever U.S. tour, which stopped at Stache’s, and a Cocteau Twins show at Newport Music Hall.

Gillard also plays guitar in Nada Surf, and, using unfinished song fragments of Scott Miller, founder of Bay Area power-pop band Game Theory, Gillard wrote a track for Miller’s forthcoming posthumous release, Supercalifragile.

And, as always, Pollard has new material on the way. Gillard said the band already has demos for another record. Look for it sometime this year.

Kinky Friedman has evolved from the sort of snotty miscreant who would start his career fronting a band called the Texas Jewboys and later arrive as a beloved Mark Twain-esque humorist and friend of presidents. Beneath all of the jokes, however,

you have a wry political and social commentator and genuine country treasure. A song like “They Ain’t Makin’ Jews Like Jesus Anymore” may go a lot further in changing minds and ways than much of the outrage we witness these days. (Don’t miss it)

As with all of the other things Cleveland is never given enough credit for, one of the earliest and most challenging punk scenes in the world called Cleveland home. Years before the Ramones and the sterile, poppy ilk that band ultimately spawned, the Mistake by the Lake was nurturing a scene of truly bizarre proto-punk and art-damaged noiseniks.

One of that scene’s survivors is Craig Bell, who logged time in some of those legendary acts.

In high school, he founded the scene’s ground zero band Mirrors, and later joined Rocket from the Tombs, the band that cast the

darkest shadow, at least until they reunited in 2003.

Bell is still at it, keeping fires alive that were initially lit more than four decades ago. Recent years have seen his tour of duty in the revived X__X, including the recent Albert Ayler’s Ghosts Live at the Yellow Ghetto, a bonafide cover of fellow Clevelander Ayler’s seminal free-jazz touchstone.

Today, Bell continues creating and performing, even if he is now a displaced Clevelander in the Hoosier State. He put together his own combo to run through songs from a punk rock catalog that predates what most fans know about punk. Goldmines and DANA open. (Don’t miss it)

T

he history of what is today known as the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum is itinerant — a non-linear story that has resulted in one of the most significant collections of cartoon and comics art in the world. That the

reputation and importance of cartoons and comics within culture over the past 40 years shares this meandering path is not wholly coincidental.

The collection began its existence in 1977 with a gift of materials from cartoonist and Ohio State University alum Milton Caniff (“Terry and the Pirates,”

“Steve Canyon”) and was originally named the Milton Caniff Research Room. A donation from fellow alum and noted illustrator Jon Whitcomb fleshed out the early collection, which was housed in the basement of the Journalism Building at Ohio State.

Early on, the research room became a repository for varied and sundry materials from across campus, changing names, locations and focus over the next decade or so. Curatorship became a full-time University Libraries position in 1982, and

the collection was moved to the Wexner Center for the Arts in 1990.

In 2009, following a gift from the Elizabeth Ireland Graves Foundation in honor of longtime Columbus Dispatch cartoonist Billy Ireland (1880-1935), the now more stable collection was renamed the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum and moved to its current home in Sullivant Hall. Providing a steady hand and impassioned advocacy throughout was founding curator Lucy Caswell.

Others were less inhibited in assigning Caswell credit for not only dedication to the Billy, but to the art form’s heightened profile and respect in broader culture.

“I was there pretty much at the birth of the museum,” said cartoonist John Backderf, who, as “Derf,” has published a host of comics and graphic novels. “All my classes were in the Journalism Building, as was The Lantern, where I worked as both a reporter and a cartoonist, and that’s where the first cartoon museum was, in two converted classrooms. … After a few months, curiosity got the better of me and I opened the door and walked in. [I eventually] introduced myself to the woman behind the desk, who, of course, was Lucy Caswell. She knew who I was. Despite a pretty small sampling of published Lantern cartoons at that time, she’d been watching and following my progress. And that was the start of a long mentor-cartoonist friendship.

“I’ve watched with awe and admiration as Lucy built that little cartoon library into a world-class institution beyond compare. When I brag to colleagues that I was one of Lucy’s first students that produces more looks of awe than anything I publish.”

Jeff Smith (“Bone”) was also among Caswell’s early students/mentees, and also met Caswell while he was a Lantern cartoonist.

“I was curious about what was considered this oddball library collection,” Smith said. “It was just Lucy and one assistant. She recognized that I was quite serious about cartooning and I recognized in her a grown-up that saw value in the art form. I really wanted to be a cartoonist, but my professors at the time were telling me that it was not real art and that eventually I would have to grow up. Lucy was telling me the opposite — that it was worth pursuing — and instilled in me a sense that [comics art] is an art form.”

Indeed, Caniff himself dubbed her “the keeper of the flame.”

“It’s hard to go back, in a way, because people think about cartoons and comics in a very different way than they did 40 years ago,” Caswell said when asked to recall those early years, when clarity and stability were in short supply. “We were outliers. When I started, I did what all good researchers would do and tried to find out what similar people had done in similar circumstances, but I found that there were no similar circumstances. We were trying to make something new, different. But I believed it was important, and there were administrators on campus who also felt it was important. Funding was always competitive, and they — the administrators in the School of Journalism and in University Libraries — had to convince higher-ups this was something to pay for.”

“We were very fortunate that Milton Caniff … lived until 1988 and was a wonderful advocate for us. I can’t emphasize how important that was,” she added.

Caniff’s advocacy, as well as Caswell’s own diligence, resulted in the addition of numerous additional collection donations to the museum, including Winsor McCay (“Little Nemo”), Walt Kelly (“Pogo”) and Edwina Dumm (“Cap Stubbs and Tippie”).

Targeted donations from, among others, Tom Batiuk (“Funky Winkerbean”), Mike Peters (“Mother Goose and Grimm”) and Bill Watterson (“Calvin and Hobbes”), along with the 2008 transfer of holdings from the International Museum of Cartoon Art, further enhanced the collection’s reputation and standing within the cartooning community and beyond.

“My feeling from early on was that Ohio State could make a difference focusing on cartoon art,” Caswell said. “We understand literature as art and drawing as art, and so melding our understanding and appreciation of this hybrid form that for a variety of reasons within the U.S. has been dismissed was something that made sense.”

Caswell predictably downplayed her role as a driving force in the increased awareness of comics as art over the past 40 years, calling the growth of the Billy and the increased cultural prominence of cartooning a “chicken and egg issue.”

Words matter. MarShawn McCarrel knew this.

“One thing we always used to talk about was that your words live on.

They live forever,” said MarShawn’s twin brother, MarQuan. “It’s really cool that [MarShawn] was able to complete this kind of project, something that will continue to affect people in a powerful and positive way.”

“This kind of project” refers to the short film “Down South,” based on a poem written by MarShawn, who also plays one of the two main characters in the film, which was produced by Sheila Fagan, a former high school teacher of MarShawn’s, and directed by Bob Yothers. Filming was completed before MarShawn, a spoken-word artist and community activist, took his own life on the steps of the Ohio Statehouse in February 2016.

“He had a presence,” Yothers recalled of his first meeting with the young man. “I asked him if he had some poetry he’d like to see turned into a film

and he said, ‘Yeah I have just the thing.’ I think he sent ‘Down South’ to me within the hour.”

The poem is based on experiences MarShawn had spending time in the American South with his grandmother. “I’m from North Carolina,” said Leatha Wellington, MarShawn’s mother. “We lived there for a little while, and they understood my main reason for wanting to move back to Columbus: for better opportunities.

They heard from my mom the stories about how things used to be, and saw how things still are.”

The film features powerful and potentially uncomfortable images and scenes interspersed with MarShawn performing the poem. Yothers, openly acknowledging the challenges of working on the piece as a white filmmaker, sought near-constant feedback from MarShawn during filming.

“I wanted to be culturally sensitive, and I didn’t want to come at it from a white perspective, so I worked with MarShawn to make sure I understand the meaning and slang and metaphor. … As we

got into production, I had some really strong imagery: a burning cross, nooses, a gunshot victim.

At one point we have MarShawn in a coffin. We knew that was going to be strong, and he said, ‘Let’s not pull any punches.’”

“Down South” will receive its second local screening during Saturday’s Ohio Shorts film festival at the Wexner Center. The film, Yothers said, is also in the running for inclusion on several notable film festivals. Yothers and Fagan both acknowledged an added responsibility to MarShawn’s message of justice in the face of racial inequality following his death.

“MarShawn was speaking about these things with a vision and deeper understanding that Bob and I could never have,” Fagan said.

“I’m very grateful to Bob and Sheila for being able to capture some of MarShawn’s talent, and thankful that this is another part of his legacy that will continue on,” Wellington said.

Colson Whitehead might be the first author to respond to news of winning the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction by playing a song from a children’s cartoon on repeat in his head.

“I’m not sure if you know the show ‘Dora the Explorer,’ but at the end of each episode they have a song where they go, ‘We did it! We did it!’” said Whitehead, who received news of the award earlier this month and visits the Schottenstein Theatre at Bexley High School for a moderated Q&A on Friday, April 28. “And so that keeps going through my head: ‘Dora the Explorer.’”

Whitehead received the award for “The Underground Railroad,” a potent, devastating and decidedly un-childlike novel centered on a slave’s escape from a Southern plantation that reads, at times, like the 1930s slave narratives collected by the Works Progress Administration filtered through the surreal landscape of Jonathan Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels,” which served as an early template. “I had the idea of doing

a ‘Gulliver’s Travels’-like structure, where each state is sort of a different state of America,” Whitehead said.

Starting with a basic seed of an idea — what if the Underground Railroad actually was a system of subterranean trains? — the author constructed a nightmarish world where black bodies swing from trees on an endless “Freedom Trail” and doctors and government officials conduct clandestine medical experiments on an unsuspecting citizenry.

“Maybe the Freedom Trail didn’t exist in this country, but I feel like the Romans did something similar, crucifying people on the road into town. Or at least that was how it was portrayed in ‘Spartacus,’” Whitehead said.

Whitehead, 47, first conceived of the idea for the book 17 years ago, saying he lacked the skills needed to pull it off at the time. “Writing about slavery and doing that deep dive into history it required was daunting and terrifying, and I put it off as long as I could,” he said. “I didn’t feel ready in many different ways.”

Three years ago, with work finished on his humor-filled “The

Noble Hustle: Poker, Beef Jerky & Death,” a nonfiction tale recounting his attempts at learning how to play poker, Whitehead opted to revisit the grim subject, which forced him to finally confront his earlier fears.

“I think the hardest part was before I started writing, and realizing what I’d have to get on the page for it to feel real,” said Whitehead, who did a bulk of his writing in his home office, accumulating anywhere from one to four pages a day, writing four days a week, with a target of eight pages a week (“That’s 400 pages a year, which kind of adds up,” he said). “Becoming acquainted with slavery through ‘Roots’ as a kid, or studying American history in college, those are two different ways of understanding our country’s history. Coming to it as an adult with kids and a family, you understand in a more adult way the gravity and depravity of the enterprise.”

In addition to the Pulitzer, “The Underground Railroad” also garnered Whitehead the 2016 National Book Award for Fiction and the 2017 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence. Recently, news also broke that “Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins will be adapting the novel for a limited-run series.

“This time two years ago, I had about 30 pages and I was just trying to do the usual thing I do, which is trying to pull it off and do a good job,” said Whitehead, who is still grappling with the success of the book and doesn’t sound eager to embrace a producer’s role as it makes its way to the small screen. “They’ve asked if I wanted some input, but … trying to figure out how something works on a TV show is different than I see it on the page. But it’d be cool to visit the set. [Jenkins has] had a great year and I’m excited to see what he does with it.”

I’ve been a movie critic for more than 15 years now. If there’s one thing I’ve grown to appreciate, it’s when a movie ends and I can say, “Well, I’ve never seen anything like that before.”

“The Lure” is one of those movies, which tends to happen when you’re watching a Polish horror-comedy about nightclub-singing, sexy mermaid sisters.

It is, in a word, bonkers, but it’s the kind of stylish and delightful bonkers that makes you revel in its excess, and I’ll take as many movies like this as we can get. (In this case, we get just two 7 p.m. screenings, Thursday and Friday, April 28 and 29, at the Wexner Center for the Arts.)

Sisters Srebrna (Marta Mazurek) and Zlota (Michalina Olszanska) are discovered by a family connected to an underground Warsaw nightclub. Soon they become part of the featured entertainment, complete with sultry singing, sexy dancing and a finale that sees them transform into literal mermaids.

The patrons of the establishment can’t get enough of them, as apparently no one bats an eye at onstage mermaids in this club.

But when Srebna starts a romance with a handsome bass player (Jakub Gierszal), her special bond with her sister is threatened. Oh, and her sister has some desires of her own, but they tend to make things, well, bloody.

First-time director Agnieszka Smoczynska, working from an obviously wildly original screenplay by Robert Bolesto, mashes together genres with great abandon. If you’re in the overlap of what she’s playing with — which admittedly won’t be close to everyone — “The Lure” is must-see. Hell, it may be even if this isn’t your thing. When else are you going to see something like this?

What starts off like an unnerving fairy tale swerves into moments of musical celebration, and the subtitled translations of the song lyrics are their own joy. In a world this weird, bursting into song feels more appropriate than it does in, say, “Les Miserables.”

But horror fans should also take note, as things get bloody and grotesque with tongue in cheek and no fear to go overthe-top. There’s also plenty of underlying metaphor about female sexuality and other topics. If the plot isn’t tidy, it should still manage to keep you intrigued.

Added bonus is the Wex screenings will feature the local premiere of Columbus filmmaker Mike Olenick’s latest short film, “The Cure.” Knowing Olenick’s work, it’s a pretty great fit.

“All This Panic” has been felt before in Hollywood. This time, however, the story is real.

The coming-of-age documentary plays like a girl-power “Sucker Punch” meets one-quarter “Boyhood,” with the only fictions being the expectations the high school teens feel are placed in front of them.

“All This Panic” starts over what to wear, but as the seven Brooklyn students learn, no ensemble would be complete, of course, without college.

It’s one among many societal pressures the women face as the film traces their steps over the course of three years, navigating the complicated, sometimes dirty subway of teenage life.

And although relatively few know what it’s like to grow up in the Big Apple, many can still identify with the adolescent anxieties that affect the teens’ very core.

For best friends Lena and Ginger, that is college.

One is leaving for it, the other left behind because of it. Their story is not “All” of “Panic,” but they do become the documentary’s default stars.

The other girls, however, seem to be treated as a bit more “‘This’ and that.” And that’s unfortunate. Their experiences, specifically Sage’s and Olivia’s, deal with

topics over which parts of society continue to panic — sex and race — with children innocently caught in the middle.

If anything, most of the “Panic” comes from their parents. In one particular high-light — pun intended — Sage’s mother can’t understand why kids these days need “utensils” to smoke pot. And while Ginger’s father is part “Sucker Punch” Wise Man, part “Boyhood” hip dad, he’s not afraid to challenge his daughter’s gumption to go out and work and, in the process, find herself.

“That’s the whole point of growing older,” the scruffy, suds-drinking sage tells Ginger.

“You eventually figure out what’s fake about you and what’s real and hopefully move on with more of the real.”

Indeed they do, challenging what they’ve been told to think about college, careers, love and life.

It’s an intimate journey that ends too soon. If only director Jenny Gage could have eschewed the conservative runtime and expanded on more of their stories, including the parents she creatively blurs from the teenagers’ points of view.

Some of the girls’ changes are as apparent as Lena losing her braces.

Other outcomes are left open to questions, as the stories were barely given any teeth to begin with.

Still, it’s a documentary that should make audiences smile. Although the teenage subjects might be over it, there is a need for “All This Panic.”

sexy drama ‘Below her mouth’ doesN’t go BeNeath the skiN

By Brad keefe In the interest of equality, it is vitally important that underrepresented groups like the LGBTQ community see more depictions of their stories on-screen. And, in the interest of equality, some of those movies are not going to be very good.

The Canadian romantic-drama “Below Her Mouth” is a movie about two women who have a passionate and unexpected affair. It’s even more notable for who is behind the camera, as it was refreshingly filmed by an all-female crew.

Unfortunately, matters of plot and characters are still important.

Dallas (Erika Linder) is a Toronto roofer who is no longer feeling it with her current partner when Jasmine (Natalie Krill) comes strutting in.

Jasmine is the editor of a fashion magazine, because of course she is.

It’s one of the most common jobs for women in movies. She’s also

engaged to Rile (Sebastian Pigott), but that seems unimportant when she meets Dallas in a bar, sparking a connection.

Actually, it seems unimportant for most of the movie until it becomes a plot point again. “Below Her Mouth” is beautifully shot smut with a plot and dialogue to match.

It’s Zalman King for lesbians, and, dammit, there’s a place for that.

But it’s a shame that this script never quite establishes why Jasmine

and Dallas connect, apart from the frequent onscreen sex (which, let’s face it, is plenty of reason to connect). The actresses seem uninspired by the wooden dialogue, and with good reason.

It’s a shame the movie doesn’t go beneath all the skin it shows.

hile sitting in a great little new cafe recently, the potent aroma of multiple flower bouquets entwining with the scent of freshly baked rolls and pastries reminded me of a line from an old poem: “Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses!”

That I was thinking about James Oppenheim’s poem, titled “Bread and Roses,” in a cafe called Flowers & Bread, was not lost on me. Also not lost: I’ve

been impressed by most everything I’ve sampled from this charming newcomer.

Flowers & Bread, which enjoys an address seemingly destined by fate — across the street from the Park of Roses in Clintonville — is a multipurpose facility.

That’s not particularly surprising when you consider that it’s the brainchild of a multifaceted duo: edible Columbus editor-publisher Tricia Wheeler and edible Columbus contributor Sarah Lagrotteria.

Wheeler also owns the nearby Seasoned Farmhouse — a self-described “recreational cooking school” — and Lagrotteria, a trained chef, has previously taught writing at Stanford University and been a publicist for celebrity chef Mario Batali.

In one room of their new business collaboration, flower arrangement is taught.

Another chamber hosts baking classes.

Upstairs, elaborate dinners are occasionally held. This review only concerns the

cafe located between the two aforementioned rooms on the first floor.

That cafe occupies a quaint little space where sunlight streams onto stark white walls, fresh flowers in pewter-cup vases perfume every round gray table and a tasteful soundtrack of jazz standards features crooning by the likes of Tony Bennett and Rosemary Clooney.

Customers line up in an even smaller room facing this seating area to choose

asparagus, rosemary and a killer, cheese-fortified crust nearly crisp as a cracker; a wonderful Tart Cherry Hot-Cross Bun ($3) offering a typically restrained sweetness; an intense ButtermilkChocolate Bundt Cake ($3.50) with a molten dark chocolate center; a fantastic Coffee Cream Scone ($3.50); and a denseyet-springy, knockout Zucchini-Carrot Cake ($4) topped with an uncommonly fluffy, whipped cream-cheese frosting.

These can be enjoyed with beverages such as a

properly frothy Double Cappuccino ($4); a huge cup of strong-and-dark, not-bitter house coffee prepared with beans from Backroom Coffee Roasters of Galena; and a Blooming Tea ($4) that, as its herband-floral leaves slowly expand in a transparent glass of hot water, looks and tastes like an unfolding flower.

lovely pastries from a display case and savory items from a cooler. Daily soups are also available, and the two I tried were excellent: potato sage with a velvety texture that doesn’t rely on an overabundance of cream; and peppery Manhattan clam chowder with a delightful — and not heavy — creamy tomato base.

At $8 each, these soups are expensive, but they’re delicious and come with a nifty, sesame-seeded “sunflower roll” that, for a worth-it 50 cents more, can be embellished with terrific, sweet-andsalty, house-made butter.

Five sandwiches are offered, too. The superb yeasty loaves called ficelles — think thin baguettes — with crackly-yet-chewy shells are the best part of these sandwiches. But what they house inside isn’t bad, either.

My favorite sandwich is the Smoked Salmon ($9) with not-too-salty fish, capers, cream cheese and scallions. Fans of an iconic French sandwich — the jambon-beurre — will find a winning version of that simple, ham-and-butter ensemble perked up with cornichons and smoked deli meat ($8).

Brie cheese and coarse, smoky-sweet bacon jam enhance the Smoked Turkey sandwich ($9), and the Roasted Veggies ($8) receives smoky notes from grilled mushrooms and zucchini, which effectively play off a sweet-tangy house pepper jelly, arugula and a ricotta-like “fetayogurt spread.”

Among the uniformly great pastries I’ve sampled are a savory Focaccia roll ($3.50) with tapenade,

You know the drill: Perch your “drink local” butt on a glorified picnic table in a craft-brewery taproom and sip hop-heavy beers while splurging on feel-good meals purchased from a food truck that looks a little beat up.

Yup, that can be fun.

Still, been there, done that, right?

Within minutes of visiting the Kindred Beer Tasting Room & Barrel House, you’ll realize this sleek operation out in Gahanna — which is about a 15-minute drive from Downtown — is a little different.

First of all, newly rebranded Kindred Beer — which premiered a year ago as “Kindred Artisan Ales” — veers away from hops-mad cliches such as double IPAs, and instead specializes in food-friendly Belgian-style ales. Secondly, Kindred calls its space a “tasting room” rather than a “taproom,” and that distinction translates into an airy, well-appointed tavern with room to roam.

Expect au courant design elements such as Edison bulbs, pew-like seating, an L-shaped wooden bar backed by white subway tiles and garage doors opening onto a patio. Also expect topshelf liquors, views into a huge barrel chamber, plus the distinguishing

feature of a gleaming new, Kindred-branded food truck overseen by an actual chef — Ben Beardsley, who apprenticed under former Columbus kitchen-star Magdiale Wolmark, the owner/chef at gone-but-not-forgotten Till Dynamic Fare and Dragonfly Neo-V. Beer-wise, take advantage of the $7 sampler.

You’ll get four exploratory 4-ounce pours from Kindred’s 12 taps. These can include the light-and-lemony Kindred Wit; a saison named Standard Operating Procedure made with rye; the richer Brune brown ale; an ESB called ’Tis a Pity; and the potent but versatile Golden Strong, which clocks in at an 8.8 percent ABV. About 12 menu items — tacos, wings, a nifty spinach salad and several sandwiches — are available to soak up the suds.

My favorite: Kindred’s de facto signature dish, the gloriously messy Spicy Chicken Sandwich ($8).

Whereas most local versions of Nashvilleinspired hot chicken are vinegar-spiked a la Buffalostyle, this craggy and crunchy-battered breast piece on a toasted roll with pickles and jalapeno slaw tastes like its considerable heat largely derives from an authentic Music Citytype cayenne paste.

If fiery chicken isn’t your thing, the juicy seared Bratwurst ($8) with — in a nod to choucroute garnie — warm, salty sauerkraut enriched with bacon, plus horseradishscented beer mustard, is another big flavor-bomb.

If you want fries with that, stubby hand-cut spuds can be added to any sandwich for $3.

The new concept, yet to be announced, is slated to open in the spring of 2018. This makes for three Cameron Mitchell Restaurants coming to the Short North, as two more are planned in a development across the street, one at street level and one on the rooftop.

Pam’s Market Popcorn announced it is opening a shop in Gahanna next month at 955 E. Johnstown Rd. The brick and mortar will initially serve the Market’s signature popcorn, and will expand to serve lunch items under the name Windy City Eats later this year.

BrewDog announced it has brewed the first batch of beer at its Canal Winchester facility. The first U.S.-made beers will be available this summer.

When bartender Kim Martinez began working at Level One Bar + Arcade in 2015, she was already well-versed in nerd-dom. She’d visited 16-Bit Bar + Arcade and Old North Arcade when they first opened. And she’s a self-proclaimed “comic-book movie nerd.” But she wasn’t prepared for the pinball enthusiasts who would flock to the arcade bar.

“There are these extremely tight-knit, niche communities of people,” said Martinez, who runs a pinball league of about 40 people every Monday and hosts tournaments. “I did not realize it was this competitive. I have to register [tournaments] with this International Flipper [Pinball] Association so they can get points to go on to the world rankings.”

Of course, not all Level One patrons are interested in the pinball machines. Some gamers are just as obsessed with particular arcade games — and beverages.

“We have one [customer] that comes in, and he just loves ‘Donkey Kong Jr.’ and he only drinks Sprite,” Martinez said. “[And] we have one that comes in and all he gets is either an O’Doul’s or a Diet Coke and he will sit at ‘Klax.’”

“It’s really funny, because the people that come in and are regulars that love the games are the ones that do not drink,” she said.

It’s crucial that the staff have a positive rapport with regulars, who are vital to the North Side arcade bar, which doesn’t

get as much traffic as its competitors closer to campus. “I have to be able to hold a conversation about the new movies that are coming out, [like] how excited I am about ‘Guardians of the Galaxy [Vol. 2],’” she said.

Comic-book movie releases have boosted business for Level One, which is located near Marcus Crosswoods Cinema.

The bar, which now hosts movie nights, can anticipate runoff during movie openings or during $5 Tuesdays at the theater.

Martinez, who is also the bar’s social media and marketing coordinator, said themed events have allowed Level One to expand its outreach.

“For a while … we were just this ’80s bar,” Martinez said, and explained the establishment, unlike others in the city, has a traditional arcade layout and once limited its playlist to ’80s tunes. “We’re trying to get younger generations in here, so we’ve definitely … grown up a little bit.”

Events promotion has also provided a creative outlet for Martinez, who studied animation at CCAD before dropping out to help support her family after her father suffered a back injury.

“I’m able to do a lot of graphic design,” she said.

And the job has also given Martinez a new passion: pinball. She is even using her vacation time to attend the ReplayFX Arcade & Gaming Festival in Pittsburgh in July.

“Pinball is definitely my thing. I could probably take on anybody now,” she said.

Sam Outlaw, Sam Outlaw is a country singer living in Los Angeles. He was born in South Dakota and ‘Outlaw’ is his mother’s maiden name. Sam writes original songs that seek to capture the spirit of the classic country and rock music he learned from his favorite singers and songwriters, such as Don Williams, James Taylor, Gene Watson, Keith Whitley, Tom Petty and Gram Parsons. Sam has already completed an extensive U.S. tour as well as international headlining tours in Australia, Scandinavia, England and Spain. Most recently, the L.A.
