hen Judy McInturff was growing up in postWorld War II Tennessee, she was encouraged to hide her Jewish heritage. “My grandmother always told me, ‘Straighten your hair, we’re going out,’” said McInturff, the director of Continuing Legal Education at the Columbus Bar Association. “‘We might have to go to the white country club.’”

That ability to pass in society saved her family the brunt of discrimination, McInturff said. In the years that followed, the synagogue acted as safe harbor — a

“They wanted to know who these people were [on the panel], and why they were so biased,” McInturff said. The person also characterized the discussion as “hate personified” and “fake news.”

The current social and political reality gives McInturff and Petyon pause about the world they are leaving for future generations.

“I grew up during the ’60s,” Payton said. “I can remember everything from guard dogs to fire hoses. … Some of the things you’d think we’d be [saying] happened back then are now happening today. I don’t know that my grandkids are necessarily going to have it much easier.”

Quoting Dr. King, Payton said he identifies another troubling similarity between the past and present: the “appalling silence of the good people.”

“We as citizens have a high duty to speak truth to power — that if you see wrong, to stand up and say that it’s wrong,” he said.

Speakers at this year’s symposium include attorneys, as well as a City of Columbus LGBTQ cabinet member and representatives from the Kirwan Institute for Race & Ethnicity. Closing out the day will be Billy White, who covers up hate symbols for free at Red Rose Tattoo in Zanesville.

“He’s had the opportunity to confer with them about how they came to have those evil things and, most importantly, how is it that there’s redemption here?”

Payton said. “I find that to be a compelling thing.”

White is proof that a single person can have a significant impact, which is another point McInturff hopes attendees will take from the symposium. “You can make a difference,” she said. “Don’t be afraid to examine your own biases. … And you’ve got to examine those things in order to be a good human.”

place where McInturff didn’t have to disguise her appearance, and where she was able to practice her faith free of outside fears. That is, until recently. “Now I’m scared all over again,” she said.

McInturff is referring to the October 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, which resulted in the deaths of 11 people.

It’s just one of many hate-fueled acts of violence, such as the killing of Heather Heyer at the 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, or the 2015 Charleston church shooting, that have rattled the public sphere in recent years.

And in that climate, McInturff will help present the seventh annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Civil Rights Symposium on Friday, Jan. 25, at the Columbus Bar Association. With a focus on “A History of Hate,” speakers will cover myriad topics, including the rise of the KKK and Hitler, bias in immigration policies, racialized trauma and implicit bias in schools.

“Sometimes history has a way of repeating itself,” said Michael Payton, executive director of the Ohio Civil Rights Commission. “Dr. King’s dream is just that: a dream. And it’s a deferred dream.”

The symposium is targeted to lawyers (Columbus Bar members and non-members) seeking continuing legal education (CLE) credits. But McInturff and Payton hope the impact will extend beyond fulfilling professional requirements.

“We’re a nation of laws,” Payton said.

“It was King that said a law can’t make a person love you, but it can keep him from lynching you. What we do here sharpens the focus of lawyers and makes them more effective with regard to addressing these issues and being more responsible in their communities.”

The symposium is also open to the public, and McInturff and Payton want to attract more attendees outside of law to avoid “preaching to the choir.”

“We need people who maybe could identify and interrupt some of their ingrained biases and think in a different way,” McInturff said.

Past symposiums have been recorded for that purpose, and some of the responses have demonstrated the need for extending education to the community.

Franklin County Could end extreme poverty tomorrow

Last week, Franklin County held the fourth of five meetings in its strategic planning initiative to address poverty in the county.

Up to this point, the planning process has been focused on gathering opinions of local leaders on four issues organizers of the meeting have suggested impact poverty: health, employment, housing and youth.

Following these meetings over the past few months, though, has got me thinking. What would it look like if the county tried to address poverty with a laser focus, working to find the most effective ways to reduce the number of people under certain income thresholds?

Let’s start at the very bottom of the income scale: extreme poverty. Believe it or not, there are still Ohioans who live on less than $2 a day, the global threshold for extreme poverty.

In 2016, the Center for Community Solutions in Cleveland, using American Community Survey data, estimated that about 190,000 Ohioans lived on less than $2 a day.

Assuming the rate of extreme poverty in Franklin County mirrors the ratio of deep poverty statewide, we can estimate that about 24,000 Franklin County residents are living on less than $2 a day, or 1.9 percent of the county population.

So how do we end extreme poverty?

The simplest answer is to give people money.

Conversations about “basic income” have been raging in the policy community for a few years now. This is not a new idea: The U.S. House of Representatives passed a Nixon-backed basic income proposal as early as 1970. Currently, basic income pilots are being held in Oakland and Stockton, California, and city leaders have started a study committee for a pilot in Chicago.

What would a basic income program look like in Franklin County? Funding a program to push 24,000 Franklin County residents above the extreme poverty threshold would cost about $17 million at

Shoppers at Easton Town Center a 100 percent uptake rate. Assuming the uptake rate is 60 percent (on the high end for social services), the total cost of the program comes to about $10 million.

Franklin County’s main form of revenue is sales taxes. In 2016, Franklin County’s 1.25 percent sales tax rate raked in about $300 million. This means the sales tax would have to be raised by about 0.05 percent to comfortably fund such a program.

This means if you spent $100 shopping at Easton, you would be charged about 5 cents to fund a program that would end extreme poverty in Franklin County.

There are reasons to worry about this approach. Sales taxes are regressive, meaning they impact the budgets of low-income people more than high-income people.

This means that people in poverty who are not in extreme poverty would bear a disproportionate portion of this tax, making it less equitable than an income tax, which the county cannot legally levy.

But it is exciting to see that a small sales tax increase would effectively end extreme poverty in Ohio’s largest county.

The longest federal government shutdown in history trudges on, and I have one simple question: Is paying border patrol officers really more important than paying food inspectors?

President Trump and the Republican regime are staging a temper tantrum cum hostage situation. They’re demanding funding for a wall along the U.S./Mexico border.

Until they get their way, they’re happy to hold ransom the paychecks of hundreds of thousands of federal employees.

Here’s what doesn’t make sense to me: There is a wall on the border already. There is already 654 miles of fencing running along the U.S./Mexico border. Over the last 12 years, the U.S. has expanded the system of border control by building more physical barriers, deploying troops and installing surveillance systems. I’ve been screaming these facts into the ether since Trump first burst onto the national stage.

Yes, the border system isn’t a cement wall, but that doesn’t change its character. Take Israel’s wall, which runs along parts of the 1949 Armistice line between the West Bank and Gaza Strip — and logs miles and miles into the Palestinian-occupied territories. That wall is 25 feet of cement in some places, but it is also miles of electrified fencing and other barriers.

I’ve stood with Palestinian farmers trying to cross the wall to graze their sheep on their own land, and Palestinian families trying to cross to visit their loved ones. I can tell you this: There’s little difference between a fence and a wall when someone with a gun is patrolling it.

Don’t get it confused. Trump’s border wall and accompanying immigration policy represent a meaningful new threat.

I’m happy that the Democrats are standing up to him. At last, they’ve discovered a line they’re not (yet) willing to cross.

Nonetheless, the rhetoric surrounding Trump’s wall stinks of the dystopian.

I’m reminded of George Orwell’s 1984. In forgetting that we’ve already militarized the border, we’ve cast all facts about immigration down the memory hole.

Our rhetoric around Trump’s border wall illustrates just how far removed many U.S. citizens are from the reality of immigration and life in the U.S./Mexico borderlands. Trump has successfully manufactured a crisis that distracts from the real suffering U.S. immigration policies have caused for years.

We need to understand why Trump is talking about immigrants and walls and why he doesn’t mind misleading the public. His immigration policy is designed to take advantage of misinformation and racism. He’s trying to ensure his re-election.

Meshikou If you like ramen and haven’t been here you have NO idea what you are missing.

It is located in the heart of Bethel Plaza.

I crave this place no less than once a week and have to tell myself there is no way eating ramen that much can be healthy. That Spicy Miso Ramen is what dreams are made of. The sweetness of the corn, the spicy broth, the perfectly cooked egg … ugh! (Can you tell I am on a diet right now?) Soon, ramen. Soooon!

Lineage Brewing Being a mom who is back in school after 20 years, I don’t have as much time to hit up breweries as I used to.

But when I do, I like to make it count.

Lineage on High Street in Clintonville has been my favorite brewery since it opened (full disclosure: I worked there a few years back). The food is amazing, the staff members know what they are talking about and the beer selection is not only fantastic but also extremely diverse. I’m confident that anyone I take there will have something to enjoy.

Being a nontraditional student I cannot emphasize how much I love being back in school. I am attending

Columbus State Community College and the entire experience is so different. I love dusting off the proverbial brain cobwebs. I take pride in every A grade, and am frustrated by anything less. I enjoy leading discussions in class when the younger students may be shy to speak up. There really is something to be said about not caring what people think as you get older. It’s pretty rad.

Being a fun parent Don’t get me wrong, we have rules and guidelines in our house, but we all laugh together, yell together and create chaotic memories together. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Being 40 I don’t understand why people, especially women — thanks, society — fear turning 40. I feel like a whole new life has been breathed into me. I am reaching goals now that I felt were too unattainable to even attempt a few years back. I have more confidence in who I am and where my place is in life, and I love that!

I encourage ANYONE who fears getting older to truly embrace all of the new opportunities you have in front of you, because they are countless.

“Fyre Fraud” I watched Hulu’s documentary on the ill-fated Fyre Festival (I’ve canceled my Netflix subscription, so I haven’t watched the competing film), and it was amazing. I was only vaguely aware of the event when it was happening in real time, so I enjoyed learning the backstory.

It was humorous and perplexing, especially as I tried to figure out what exactly festival founder Billy McFarland does besides look dead behind the eyes. Added bonus: Ja Rule arguing with random people on Twitter after the documentaries premiered.

–Erica Thompson Hygge We had a longtime family friend from Denmark arrive in Ohio late last week, looking forward to catching up and perhaps also doing some running around Columbus. The latter goal was scuttled by the weekend weather, but our friend brought with him a book about the Danish cultural linchpin of “hygge,” a physical coziness that goes beyond being comfy to bringing about personal well-being.

–Jim Fischer Cousins Maine Lobster OK, so the lobster rolls are a bit of a splurge (they’re not huge and are priced at $15.50), but damn are they great. There’s a nice pile of high-quality lobster meat, a touch of butter and a perfectly soft, hot dog-sized bun. I got to enjoy one recently when the truck posted up outside my local bottle shop, Grain + Grape, and the sandwich paired nicely with the Maine Beer Company stout the taproom poured in conjunction. Hopefully it makes a return soon.

–Andy Downing Bands to Watch bands This may come as a total shock, but I don’t always adore every single band I write about in Alive.

(I’ll give you a minute to get over your surprise... Take your time...

very year Alive picks five bands we think you should pay attention to, and every year it’s never a struggle to find them. Columbus is flush with options.

The tough part is whittling down the choices. The “Bands to Watch” descriptor means that we’re not just jazzed about what these acts have done thus far (though we are); it means we think these groups have even more great stuff looming on the horizon, whether onstage or in the studio or both.

In 2019, we’re highlighting Winston Hytwr’s wobbly bedroom-pop birthed at the end of Ohio; the haunting, “dirty snow globe” tracks of trio wyd; the increasingly introspective rhymes of rapper Kashis Keyz; the sad-but-sparkly indie-rock of youthful foursome snarls; and the subtly dissonant, beautifully melodic pop songs of the Bascinets.

t the beginning of “Jangle Bee,” from the Bascinets’ 378 Vol. 1 EP, there’s a few seconds of dissonant piano before chiming guitars come in to kick-start the melody. That ghostly piano surfaces again in an instrumental section, keeping the song just slightly off-kilter.

Those dissonant tone clusters were partly inspired by singer/guitarist Tristan Huygen’s research project on American modernist composer Charles Ives, whom Huygen studied at Capital University. Ives loved to experiment with dissonance in conjunction with melody, and the same can be said of the Bascinets.

“Dissonance and melody, prettiness and ugliness — you smash them together. It’s like a gesture with a limp,” said Huygen, joined by Bascinets bandmates Nick Wellman (vocals/guitar), Nick Shew (bass) and Trevor Joellenbeck (drums) at an Old North bar. “There’s a constant tension, a push and pull, between a nice, wellcrafted song with good melody and form, and then introducing some dissonance or angularity.”

“It makes the song feel evil and wrong,” Shew said, though that’s not entirely true. While the Bascinets like to toy with discord, melody and beauty tend to win out on the band’s 2017 debut album, Always Want to Be Your Friend, and a pair of 2018 EPs, 378 Vol. 1 and 378 Vol. 2.

In between the album and the EPs, the Bascinets trimmed down from five members to four, opting to leave keyboards out of the equation, at least onstage. “Before, the keys player would have pre-programmed noises that were in the actual recording that we had to queue

up [live],” Wellman said. “There’s no spontaneity to that.”

While the Bascinets’ recorded output so far has been tracked primarily at Capital, the band has a new setup in the basement of Huygen’s parents’ house south of Grove City — a quieter, cleaner alternative to the campus-area house Huygen, Wellman and Shew share on

17th Avenue.

“It’s like a Bob Dylan Basement Tapes-type place to record,” Huygen said. “It’s been very nice.” “[Huygen’s parents] provided a lot of beer for us,” Wellman said.

“His mom was like, ‘What kind of beer do you drink? I’m going to the grocery store,’” Joellenbeck said. “She brought back a case of beer and all these treats.”

“So many Bagel Bites,” Shew said.

“And his grandma cooked us this Southern lunch with collard greens,” Joellenbeck said.

“I’m from Atlanta originally,” Huygen said. “My Nana, she’s from rural Georgia, so my mom and her are amazing cooks. I come from a line of barbecue restaurant owners. We have a family sauce

and everything. … It’s great, but it’s hard to focus on recording, because half the time you’re just drinking beer and eating barbecue, and then it’s been two hours and it’s like, ‘Oh, we should probably record something.’ …

Luckily we have enough gear to get the sound we want. Our stuff isn’t super produced and high fidelity.”

“It’s decent-fi,” Wellman said.

“Upper-mid fi,” Joellenbeck said.

It takes restraint for Huygen, who studied music recording at Capital and last year released a note-for-note cover of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, to not obsess over every little thing. “I am trying not to slip back into worrying about my tone too much. I’m a little reserved compared to where I used to be,” said Huygen, who used to post YouTube reviews of guitar effects pedals. “I have seen the evils of too much concern over tone.

I’ve been on the forums.”

Huygen shares some of the Bascinets’ songwriting load with Wellman and brings a power-pop sensibility to the band, while Shew is an acolyte of the Fall and Joellenbeck sticks to Springsteen.

But it’s Wellman’s love of Brit-pop and Elliott Smith that tends to most shape the Bascinets. “[Wellman’s] influence on the music is the heart and soul of the band,” Huygen said. “I mean, he sweats songs. They just fall out.”

“That’s no joke. I get an email from Dropbox, ‘Nick has altered the Dropbox folder,’ literally twice a day,” Joellenbeck said.

The bandmates have about 30 new songs, which they’ve pared down to 22 for forthcoming releases. “Our philosophy has always been to record as much as we can,” Huygen said.

“You never know what song people will latch onto.”

Arts Consortium, which offers group demonstrations on African dance and drumming, among other cultural art forms. In Keyz’s time in front of audiences, he would rap a single song — first Nas’ “I Can,” and later Kanye West’s “Jesus Walks.” Both artists underscore the open-hearted, socially aware, story-based approach Keyz continues to adopt on songs like “Broke Crayons,” from Key of Soul, which includes lines about black men shot and killed by the police and centers around the idea that a difficult or damaged past doesn’t have to define a person’s future. “Broke crayons still color,” he raps on the refrain.

At age 11, Keyz finished third in his first talent show, netting $100 for his song about abstaining from sex until marriage,

which he used to purchase a suit that he said still fits. “My mom was so smart, she bought it two sizes too big,” he said, and laughed. “Recently I got it let out, and I can still put it on today. …

It’s a constant reminder that I can do this.”

A few years later, Keyz, who was born in Columbus and at age 4 moved with his mom to Hartford, Connecticut, following his parents’ divorce, started to experience difficulties at home, at which point his mother sent him back to Columbus to live with his father, who had existed as little more than a stranger for the better part of a decade.

Though Keyz now says of the decision, “It saved me,” he was far from open to it at the time.

“It was more than bitterness; it was legit hate. I didn’t even

call him my father. To me he was my sperm donor,” Keyz said.

“Because he wasn’t there, I never had that whole experience of having a father in the house. My mom was so abundantly present in my life that it was like, ‘What the fuck is a father?’”

Though the relationship is better these days, the rapper said he still has difficulty discussing intensely personal issues with his father, because Keyz’s guard remains elevated due to deep-seated abandonment issues. As these feelings soften, however, Keyz has noticed his music steadily becoming more vulnerable, moving from lyrical boasts to deep, personal insights.

Most recently, Keyz wrote a handful of songs during an emotional Christmas visit to Hart-

ford — the first time he’d seen his mother and two younger sisters in nearly four years.

“I broke down a couple times because of the conversations we were having. Me not being there, I felt like I was supposed to be the father to my younger two sisters because their father wasn’t present, either,” said Keyz, who stayed in his grandmother’s house during the visit, sleeping in his mother’s childhood bedroom — a setting that added to the sentiments surfacing in the introspective tracks he was writing. “But it was needed. … Even in just these last three months I feel like I’ve gone through a transformation.”

Now the next time someone asks, “What else you got?” Keyz knows he’ll be ready with an answer.

ashis Keyz is keenly perceptive of his weaknesses — an awareness he traces to the first time he rapped for someone in the music industry at age 14.

“He was like, ‘Show me what you got,’” at which point Keyz, 27, emptied himself of material, rapping all 15 songs he had written. “When I was done, he threw on a beat and was like, ‘OK, now what else you got?’”

The answer, which still mortifies Keyz, was nothing.

Keyz entered into music foremost as a writer. But over time he’s worked to sharpen his abilities as a freestyler — a skillset that proves handy particularly when he performs more-improvised live sets with his backing band, the Seedz, which will be supporting him during Bands to Watch at Ace of Cups on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Growing up, Keyz gravitated toward hip-hop largely due to the influence of his uncle, who worked as a road manager for Snoop Dogg and would regularly turn up for family gatherings toting gifts like CDs filled with unreleased Jay-Z verses, in addition to flaunting his own spoils.

“One time he pulled up in this yellow Hummer with a Bud Light wrap around it, like, ‘I’m doing this thing with Bud Light so they gave me the car,’” Keyz said. “They just gave you the car?

‘Yeah, just gave me the car and told me to drive around.’ … At that point, he was my role model because my father wasn’t in my life. I wanted to be like my uncle.

And music was the connection.”

ging makes me nauseous,” said Chlo White, singer/ guitarist in snarls.

She’s talking about the song “Twenty,” a standout track on the band’s self-titled 2018 EP. The song begins with palmmuted guitar chords and White’s voice: “I’m not who I thought I was gonna be,” she sings, sounding as if she’s on her back in her bedroom, staring at the ceiling and letting the words float from her mouth like a slow exhale. “‘Twenty’ is about running out of time,” White said. “It’s dying without having done anything. I’m really terrified of not having meaning. That’s why I like to make meaning out of everything, which is kind of unhealthy sometimes.”

White is 19, which may help explain her anxiety around the two-decade milestone. But snarls guitarist Mick Martinez is 21, and that same feeling hasn’t dissipated. “I share the same fear that Chlo does,” she said. “I’m just as scared. I can’t talk about it that much because it gives me a panic attack.”

Part of what makes “Twenty” so strong, and what makes this indie-rock act a band to keep your eye on, is the way snarls can take something specific and make it feel universal. Grappling with the current version of yourself, and knowing that your younger self envisioned something different — it’s a feeling that can infiltrate the subconscious at any age.

“When I was thinking about that song, it wasn’t so much running out of time,” said snarls singer/bassist Riley Hall, who’s also 19. “It’s more reflecting on how much I’ve changed. … It’s about coming to this landmark of 20 and reflecting on who I’ve

become, how my priorities have changed, who I want to be.”

The theme of identity runs throughout the band’s debut EP, and it’ll also feature prominently on snarls’ forthcoming full-

length, Burst, which the foursome is currently finishing with Jon Fintel at Relay Recording (drummer Max Martinez, Mick’s younger brother, rounds out the snarls lineup).

“I have an identity crisis almost every day of my life,” White said. “I especially express that through makeup and wigs.

I have a white one, a pink one that fades to blue, then I ordered

a burgundy one… I’ll have nine in a couple weeks. Usually the outfit comes first. Then I’m like, ‘What wig matches this pair of pants? How can I pop off right now?’ I like to get crazy. Yesterday I was crying glitter.”

White pauses and laughs, realizing the makeup is an apt metaphor for snarls. “That fits our band really well: crying glitter tears,” she said.

The bandmates said Burst is full of sparkles — a creative direction they trace directly to “Twenty,” which best reflects the current version of snarls. “[The EP] was a reflection of us trying to figure out what kind of band we wanted to be,” said Mick, who also plays in 2017 Bands to Watch alum Cherry Chrome.

“We don’t play any of those songs except ‘Twenty’ and ‘Emo Track #2’ now. We’re a lot more twinkly and a little more alternative,” White said. “It’s like a melting pot of yummy stuff.

Like pho.”

Twinkly Vietnamese soup aside, the creative process behind “Twenty” also proved to be a foretaste of how the bandmates would write songs going forward. “‘Twenty’ was the only song we really thought about as a group while we were writing.

We worked together and wrote it with purpose,” Mick said. “I think all of the songs on [Burst] reflect that. All these songs were written with intent and passion.”

And the band will continue to explore coming-of-age themes in songs that reflect the exodus from the turbulent teenage years to the harsh realities of adult life, and all the attendant identity crises along the way.

“The older I get, the more I’m gonna change,” White said. “I can’t do anything about it, so I’m gonna write sad songs about it.”

and took a job hauling materials at vinyl pressing plant Gotta Groove Records. Hightower worked the 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. shift, and when he got home, he worked on songs for a new record — the follow-up to his 2017 cassette release on Superdreamer Records, Exploration Date, a collection of in-the-red, jangle-pop songs. (Hightower also plays in Columbus hardcore act Minority Threat.)

For his Cleveland-born material, Hightower wanted to raise the bar in terms of fidelity and tone. “I was living on the east side of Cleveland. It’s this old jazz area, all rundown. I was listening to a lot of Gil ScottHeron and a lot of Sun Ra, and

I was watching videos of them talking about mixing,” said Hightower, who took the lessons to heart. “I was like, ‘I should make sure this is the most “adult” album I have’ — something I could show someone and not be embarrassed by how poorly mixed it is.”

As he recorded late at night, the songs began to reflect his enervated mood and still surroundings. “The songs aren’t rock songs because my partner [was often] sleeping. It’s like 2 in the morning. So I’d have to write really slow songs that were chill.

And the amount of energy I had was very low because I’d just worked a 10-hour shift,” he said.

When Hightower looked out

the window of his apartment in an old warehouse, all he saw was the darkened water of Lake Erie.

“Wow, I’m at the end of Ohio,” he thought. The idea sparked a melody on his guitar, which he runs through a Sea Machine effects pedal that gives his instrument a wobbly, underwater sound. Sometimes Hightower even runs his drums through the pedal.

“I’d play [the melody], look at the water and try to think of lyrics and vibe out, and I literally couldn’t. My mind would just be blank any time I started playing it. … It would erase my brain, but in a good way. I was just tranced by it,” said Hightower, who eventually decided to leave the

song lyric-less and let it evoke the glazed-over feeling.

Instrumental closing track “The End of Ohio” became the namesake for the new Winston Hytwr album, which is available on Bandcamp and will soon be out on cassette via the Fah-Q Catalog, a tape label Hightower launched while in Cleveland.

This year will be the label’s biggest so far, with forthcoming cassettes from the Girl in Times New Viking (Beth Murphy of TNV, naturally), Minority Threat, Twompsax, Bench and a split from Kneeling in Piss (Future Nuns’ Alex Mussawir) and Jigsaw Six (Nick Schuld).

By the summer of 2018, Cleveland was wearing down Hightower, especially since he was still tending bar in Columbus on weekends, then driving back north for his weekday warehouse job. “I did that all year,” he said. “It drove me crazy.

I almost lost my mind.”

Hightower returned home to Columbus and now performs live as Hytwr with bassist Bryant Strayer, guitarist Vince Smigiel and drummer Scott Hagelgans.

(Smigiel and Hagelgans also both play in Wharm, which released its self-titled debut on the Catalog in 2017; Hightower said he and Strayer may end up playing in Wharm, too.)

Hightower doesn’t regret his time in Cleveland. But he doesn’t miss it, either. “I was like, ‘Easy Street is lame. I wanna go where it’s rough!’ And then I was like, ‘Why would I ever think this? Why did struggling seem like a good idea?’” he said, chuckling at the thought. “I’d rather live in Columbus and have sanity.”

n the summer of 2017, Winston Hightower was ready for a change. Things in Columbus seemed a little too easy, too static.

“I just felt fed up with Columbus, because I felt like there were a lot of life things I did not know or understand.

I felt like I didn’t have to work that hard to get anything,” Hightower said recently in an interview Downtown. “I essentially wanted to grow up.”

When the person he was seeing moved to Cleveland, it seemed like the right time to mix things up, so Hightower, who was born and raised in Clintonville, decided to go along.

rom a distance, wyd tracks tend to be lush and beautiful, layers of gauzy, pulsating keyboards, delicate guitar and minimalist drums creating a haunting musical cocoon for singer Carly Fratianne. Move a bit closer, though, and the barbs in Fratianne’s words can pack a lethal sting. “I think that I have lost the will to live,” she sings ominously on seductive unreleased track “After.”

“It’s almost like wrapping a porcupine in a nice, felt box,” Fratianne said of the band’s ability to transform these dark utterances into something beautiful. “Like, ‘Here you go. This will look great on your mantle. Don’t open it.’”

Fratianne, who also sings and plays guitar in 2018 Band to Watch Souther, initially formed wyd as a duo alongside multiinstrumentalist and recording engineer Maddy Ciampa in late 2017 (the group now records and performs as a trio with drummer Courtney Hall). Coming into the project, the two had zero expectations. For months, wyd existed less as a fully functioning band than as a friendly bedroom collaboration, the pair constructing debut track “wyd” casually over the course of three or four months.

“We didn’t have a plan to make this a band,” Fratianne said.

“We were just fixated on this one song. … But then we liked it so much and had such a good working chemistry that we just kept going.”

Even now, the studio remains key to wyd’s existence, the bandmates logging countless hours layering their dense tracks with electronic textures, unexpected instrumental flourishes and even found sounds — one unreleased song includes a tornado siren Ciampa and Fratianne recorded in

unison on their cellphones in the midst of a thunderstorm.

“We have a lot of tracks on every song — even if it doesn’t sound like it,” Ciampa said.

“Sometimes, if a song needs more high end, or more air to it, which is hard to describe from a producer’s point of view, I’ll add a weird static to it. … It’s not

anything that anyone else would notice is there, but when it’s out, I can tell something is missing.”

This intuitive approach mirrors the genesis of the songs,

which often start with something as simple as a loose guitar riff or keyboard line and a vague feeling or conceptual idea the musicians hope to communicate. Starting work on “wya,” for instance, Fratianne described to her bandmates a desire to have the song replicate “a dirty snow globe,” and throughout recording Ciampa envisioned a raging storm, which is mirrored in a guitar riff on the bridge that crackles like heat lightning.

“For the first three songs, Carly had these visions. Sometimes she would tell me textures, or visual things like colors,” Ciampa said. “What I think makes a good mixing engineer is when you mix with your eyes closed. And so when I was mixing those first three songs, every time I closed my eyes, I could picture the full scenery of the song.”

While wyd generally takes a meticulous approach to recording, the three are also open to the accidental, particularly in the writing process, which can introduce more natural tension into the music.

“I never want to create things that sound purely accidental, but I always love the accidental quality of music as an art form,” Fratianne said. “The way I write songs is super-organic and very impulsive, and I want to lean into that.”

In concert, however, these more conceptual ideas are set aside, with Hall, who came up drumming in punk bands, helping reshape the songs into leaner, louder versions of the recorded takes.

“The studio can feel a little tedious, at times — in a good way, like in a way you can feel your brain muscles growing,” Fratianne said. “But it’s such a great release to then take these tracks and play them loudly for people, and to all together go on that adventure.”

Joe Camerlengo wants to teach your kids about drugs.

And about personal hygiene. And breakfast. And how everyone can be a true artist, regardless of audience size or the level of income generated from the work.

“We were raised very poorly to think that you’re not an artist unless you’ve proven it. And I think people think the only way you prove it is by validating yourself with outside approval or by financially ‘making it,’” said Camerlengo in a mid-January interview at an Olde Towne East coffee shop. “For example, if somebody isn’t a writer for a paycheck, they usually don’t call themselves a writer. I think that that’s very sad for everybody.

I think it’s why people drop out of music when they get in their mid-20s or mid-30s and then just keep it in their bedrooms, because they feel like, ‘I didn’t make it. This was fun in my 20s, and now guitar is just something I do on the weekends.’”

For Camerlengo, music is something he pursues most hours he’s not working as a nurse. He currently plays in five bands, including Van Dale, Mary Lynn, Brat Curse, Blanket Boys and Classical Baby, the latter of which will be performing a release show for its new record, It’s 11:11 & I’ll Always Love You, at Dirty Dungarees on Wednesday, Jan. 30, after which it will be converted to a children’s recording project, which is where those lessons

about hygiene come in.

The reasons for the conversion are myriad, including Camerlengo’s interest in expanding beyond the 20- and 30-somethings who currently make up much of his audience. He’s also drawn to the immediacy and wonder with which children relate to music — a quality that tends to dissipate as people age.

“There’s just something about how kids absorb music … that’s almost like believing in Santa,” he said. “Once they get to the age where they know what’s cool, and they know what Pitchfork is, and they know what local bands have had reviews and been to South By Southwest … some of that is lost. … I think there’s something really cool about the way that kids hear music and all they know is if it makes them jump.”

Camerlengo initially launched Classical Baby as a more immediate, stripped-down outlet for his rawest musical ideas. Like most everything he’s ever done, though, the project gradually increased in scope, with Camerlengo organically adding musicians to help flesh out the sound.

(He’ll be supported for this release by singer/multi-instrumentalist Maddy Ciampa, guitarist Carly Fratianne and drummer and fiancée Courtney Hall, who collectively make up 2019 Band to Watch wyd, as well as friend and former roommate Corey Montgomery.) At their core, however, many of the songs remain rooted in this initial concept; album closer “Sweet Irene,” a gorgeous deathbed lullaby, centers on

an emotionally raw vocal take Camerlengo captured on his cell phone.

Moving forward, Camerlengo intends to continue recording in Classical Baby alongside Ciampa, Fratianne, Hall and others. According to Camerlengo, the songs will still be “wild as fuck,” even if the future language for describing them might not be.

And while the music will be geared toward the younger generation, Camerlengo is certain adults will be able to pull meaning from it, as well.

Returning to the idea of artistry and fame, Camerlengo lays out his idea for one song, which will include three musicians who have impacted his life, even at varying levels of celebrity: John Lennon, Daniel Johnston and Columbus’ Mary Lynn.

“I’m going to talk about them in the exact same way,” he said. “All Johnston ever wanted was to be a star on MTV. And more or less he’s a laughingstock to people that take music seriously. Even the people that are touched by his music, they’re like, ‘Oh, and by the way, he’s a total freak,’ which is sad. The truth of the matter is he is not the rock star he dreamed of being his whole life. So did Daniel Johnston fail or did he succeed? And it’s this idea that is so heartbreaking, because clearly he’s the fucking best.”

By Joel oliphint Kacey Musgraves’ 2018 album, Golden Hour, hasn’t sold more copies than the Texas songwriter’s previous records, but it undoubtedly broadened her fan base by exploring new “cosmic country” territory.

Indeed, much has been made of Musgrave’s disco turn on “High Horse” and the prominent, auto-tuned vocals on “Oh, What a World” — production flourishes that bear little resemblance to modern-day, mainstream country (or classic country, for that matter).

And while those creative choices add interest and mood to Golden Hour, they’re not what make this album so special. That’s all due to Musgrave’s songwriting and her effortlessly strong, sweet-but-never-saccharine voice.

tell our story,” Lomax said. “In so doing, I honored them. It came to me, and I accepted the mission impossible.”

The Wexner award isn’t the only help Lomax has had in making the impossible possible. But at the project’s heart is Lomax’s dedication to his craft as a musician and composer, and also to the completion of the project. He was still fine-tuning the 400 suite that will be performed this weekend as recently as this past month. (“My family called me Scrooge because I was working through the holiday,” Lomax said.)

“This is definitely — I don’t take this lightly — a magnum opus in the sense that I’ll never do this again,” Lomax said.

“I see [400] as a nexus. I think I’ve been telling these stories in some way or form all along, and there are a lot of roads that have led to this, but the world hasn’t engaged the work in this way.

“So I see this as a sort of circle in the middle of a diagram, with offshoots, some of which came before the circle, and some that will grow out from it.”

For example, Lomax is close to finishing, “Uhuru,” a work for symphony orchestra that he described as “an addendum to the 12-album cycle.” Additionally, he discussed in some detail an oratorio he envisions that would delve more deeply into an important piece of the African-American history timeline that he was unable to address in detail in 400: Reconstruction.

But Lomax intends (or hopes, anyway) to give himself a break from composing for a while. Of course, in the meantime, there is more playing of 400 music that must be done. As just one example, Lomax and saxophonist Eddie Bayard, who form the Ogun Meji Duo, will perform again at the Lincoln Theatre on Thursday, Jan. 31, playing music from one of the 12 400 albums.

“There is so much to do with respect to this story, and lots of fodder for conversations,” Lomax said. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

rummer/composer Mark Lomax will never do this again.

“This” refers to composing and recording 12 albums worth of original music for seven different ensembles, all released on the same day, as he recently did with 400: An Afrikan Epic. (The 12-album cycle is available for download at marklomaxii.com as of Jan. 23. A physical release is in the works; most distributors are not set up to release that much music all at once, Lomax said.)

The epic tells the story of Africa from pre-colonial and slavery times through the current era of Africans in diaspora.

The 12 albums feature Lomax performing in solo, duo, trio and quartet settings, as well as accompanied by an African drum ensemble and string section. There is also one album of music for cello quartet. (Indeed, when I met Lomax at a Short North eatery, he was off to attend a performance of “Four Women”

by Columbus cello quartet UCelli. The piece pays tribute to four black women who have championed social justice and equal rights.)

“Every album is a chapter in and of itself,” Lomax said. “You can’t always address something in detail when you’re talking about thousands of years of history, so there is a ton of subtext and metaphor throughout.”

The entire epic, which clocks in at about eight hours and 40 minutes in length, can’t be performed all at once in a traditional concert setting, so Lomax has taken themes from throughout 400 and reconfigured them so they can all be performed by the Urban Art Ensemble, a chamber group featuring Lomax’s quartet augmented by a string section, and including segments of new music composed that weave the various themes together. This suite will be premiered at the Lincoln Theatre on Saturday, Jan. 26, in a concert sponsored by the Wexner Center for the Arts, which also presented Lomax with an Artist Residency Award that helped him complete the epic.

While Lomax, a self-described “bluecollar composer,” will take credit for the work done on 400, he said his inspiration came from a greater source.

By Jim Fischer You want to binge watch episodes of “The Joy of Painting” but you don’t have the time. No worries. Columbus artist Tyler Bohm has overlaid 31 episodes into one file — video and audio from all of them playing simultaneously in one twoand-a-half-minute-long loop.

The good news is that watching 31 episodes of Bob Ross at once still results in a mostly recognizable landscape painting. The bad news is that Ross’ soothing, approachable speaking voice becomes a haunting, discomforting melange of sound.

Bohm’s “Crash Course” is one of 39 works in ROY G BIV Gallery’s “ImageOHIO 19” exhibition at the Shot Tower Gallery at Fort Hayes Arts and Academic High School. The gallery’s 19th annual exhibition of photo, video, digital and new media work was guest-curated by Jennifer Lange, curator of the Film/Video Studio Program at the Wexner Center for the Arts, and will remain on view through Feb. 22.

ROY G BIV Gallery Director Haley Kedziora said the exhibition is typically held off-site; the former Short North gallery awaits the opening of its new digs in Franklinton. She also said this exhibition has remained consistent in intent through the years, while broadening in scope in response to new technology and the fresh and often unexpected ways in

which artists employ it in their making.

“There are things that are happening now and pieces being made now that wouldn’t or couldn’t have been 19 years ago,” Kedziora said. One such piece is Bohm’s moving images-meets-sculpture piece, which uses an iPad for presentation.

“It starts with an idea, and then I find the technology that enables it,” Bohm said of the inclusion of new media in his work. “When you start seeing what software is capable of and what people are doing with it, you start to think maybe certain things are feasible.”

Bohm created a Plexiglas sculpture that frames the iPad screen, adding what he called “emoji-like buttons” that even further simplify the video content. But, in the end, it’s the video that captivates.

“Visually, I didn’t try to line [the episodes] up because I think the whole point of it was to see what kind of composition you can get from small variations,” Bohm said. “I’ve done a series of these around the vague idea of condensing a lot of information down into a simplistic form. It’s not so much about Bob Ross, but more about the way people consume information these days, because there’s so much of it.

“But I love Bob Ross, too, so it’s not just a purely random subject.”

‘ShoplifterS’ (and an oScar rant)

So let’s begin this week’s review with the requisite reaction to the Oscar nominations, shall we? Here’s how I feel about the Oscars, basically every year.

Of the eight Best Picture nominees, I had exactly two in my Top 10 (“Roma” and “The Favourite,” at #2 and #3 respectively). I only had one more in my honorable mentions (“BlacKkKlansman”).

So those films are what I’ll be rooting for that night.

My top movie of the past year (“Eighth Grade”) was nominated for … nothing.

My picks for Best Actor (Ethan Hawke in “First Reformed”) and Best Documentary (“Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”) were not even nominated.

Hell, my favorite crowd-pleaser in a year when the Academy briefly considered a Best Popular Film category was also shut out (“Crazy Rich Asians”).

Here’s where I will remind you of something I promise I never lose sight of as a film critic: Tastes are subjective.

I only get so curmudgeonly over the Oscar nominations because they often give a boost to underseen movies, and I usually have a lengthy list of movies that could use more of a boost than me screaming blindly into the pages of Alive.

This brings me to one really, really deserving movie that is worth the boost.

Writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Shoplifters” is the Japanese nominee in the Best Foreign Language category, and it’s so goddamn good that I actually consider that category stronger than Best Picture, as it joins Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” and Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Cold War.” In some ways, “Shoplifters” is a fine paring with “Roma,” a tale of the everyday lives of working-class people getting by amid ups and downs. It’s a deeply human tale, with humor and pathos and twists.

And it’s one of the best movies of the past year, so, y’know, you should probably see it so people make more movies like this instead of “Bird Box” or whatever.

It’s the story of an unlikely family that we first meet as patriarch Osamu Shibata (Lily Franky) is, well, shoplifting with his young son, Shota (Jyo Kairi).

The setup suggests a family of criminals and grifters, but low-level theft is only one aspect of the otherwise legitimate grind the multigenerational unit living in a tiny apartment goes through to get by.

ful, sad and enthralling. Like “Roma,” it feels like a slice of life that’s both deeply ingrained in a certain culture and also somehow universal.

And after an initial run at the Wexner Center, it’s opening at the Gateway Film Center … in a week. If you want to see a movie that helps explain why I love movies, please don’t forget about “Shoplifters.” Even if it’s only to complete your Oscar ballot.

restaurant tethers its name to an intentionally misspelled word as an understandable grab for attention in a competitive business. I’d wager that the creative, delicious and prettily plated dishes cooked in Comune would quickly attract attention to the impressive place if its name were only a prosaic self-description like “New Vegetarian Restaurant.”

Comune, a sophisticated-yet-casual, primarily vegan South Side standout that’s been booked solid lately, is easy on the eyes and interesting on the ears.

Its tastefully spare space features stark white walls, off-white tables with black matte cutlery and black napkins, plenty of plants and windows, date-night-worthy low lighting and a lively modern soundtrack playing at a conversationfriendly volume. Inside the impeccably tidy bathrooms — one is largely decorated in white, the other in black — the recorded voice of author/provocateur Henry Miller expounds on topics such as “theoretical pleasure.”

No, this isn’t your typical Birkenstocks-and-yoga-pants-variety health-food restaurant. The small, appealing wine list communicates that with refreshingly uncommon, generally dry selections.

The house cocktails ($12) might sound exotic, but they’re based on familiar flavors.

For example, the “I Have the Pawa,” with frozen avocado pits serving as ice cubes and “avocado fat-washed” tequila, is like the best paloma around; the deceptively potent “Matcha, Matcha” is essentially a lemony martini with a green-tea finish.

Comune’s often-Asian-accented cuisine adheres to a similar aesthetic.

vented it with cruciferous vegetables — and pickled jalapenos — in the Tempura Cauliflower ($10). This creation and the unexpectedly sweet Togarashi Fries ($10) are both good and were popular at my table, but I wouldn’t place either on my list of Comune favorites.

That list would be topped by the Fresh Semolina Pappardelle ($22): handmade, silky, wide pasta noodles with a tangy, earthy and dynamic “maitake-walnut Bolognese” sauce. I like the veggie-heavy Dan Dan Noodle Bowl ($13) practically as much.

Note: That spicy, wonderful and eye-catching entree is served only at lunch.

Sure, the friendly and personable service could be more consistent and informative. But while digging into a refined vegan brownie with light-and-fluffy whipped coconut cream and bittersweet candied citrus (Chocolate Avocado Cake, $7) after waiting a little too long for it, I consoled myself with this thought: Perhaps “Comune” is spelled like it is because this terrific eatery knows that its diners will audibly supply extra “mmm”s.

I’ll admit that reading “CoconutSquash Soup” ($6) didn’t sound like something I’d find especially compelling. The soup’s depth of flavor, soothing texture and intriguing nuances — from nigella seeds, vindaloo curry seasonings and pureed kabocha — proved me very wrong.

The best part of the Roasted Acorn Squash ($17) is the lentil dal scented with ras el hanout. But other components — such as sprouted seeds and a stunningly verdant herb jus — lend distinction, too.

Only one item on the eminently manageable menu is identified as a “salad,” but it’s a doozy. Squash cubes, romanesco broccoli, pristine greens, sweet nut brittle, blobs of ricotta and more make the shareable Autumn Salad ($14) a memorable ensemble.

Do you like pickles and fermented assorted veggies? The Pantry Love will afford you a bold and colorful fix for just $6.

Probiotic pickled cabbage arrives in a thick ribbon of house kimchi atop Comune’s excellent Crispy Fried Rice ($14) cake. The inspired dish is an elegant take on kimchi fried rice with dolsot bibimbaplike textures and a delicately fried egg.

When Fritz the Nite Owl hosted movies seven nights a week on WBNS-10TV, it was as if he were having conversations in multiple living rooms across the city. Whether it was a mother waking up for a 2 a.m. infant feeding, or a couple on date night, Fritz shared an intimate connection with people through his commentary between scene breaks, bolstered by special effects.

The Emmy-award-winning show ran for 17 years, ending in 1991.

When he brought it back to movie theaters in 2010, Fritz was unsure if it would translate without the intimacy.

“I’m just astounded,” Fritz said of the response to “Nite Owl Theatre,” which runs monthly at Grandview Theatre and Drafthouse, the State Theatre in London, Ohio, and Studio 35 Cinema & Drafthouse. The next event, a showing of “Back to the Future,” takes place Saturday, Jan. 26, at the latter venue.

“It really is terrific that a lot of the old viewers are now bringing their kids,” Fritz said. “And then there are younger people who come with no idea what a movie host did in the days before cable.”

Now 84 years old, Fritz works with director/producer Mike McGraner to record segments scripted by a team of writers. But he’ll throw in his own ad-libs from time to time. He’ll also appear at the showings to sign autographs and talk to the crowd.

“I never thought I’d even meet him [let alone] be in charge of the show,” said McGraner, who grew up watching Fritz’s “Friday Night Chiller.” “It’s a lot of pressure.”

It’s also a lot of fun for McGraner, who is able to give Fritz tips for relating to a younger audience. He fondly recalls shooting a segment for “Robocop.”

“I said, ‘Ask the audience if they’re down with OCP,’” McGraner

Fritz the Nite Owl with Mike McGraner said, referencing a play on the Omni Consumer Products corporation in the movie, and the Naughty by Nature song “O.P.P.” “It got such a laugh.”

“Another time was when we were doing ‘Teenagers from Outer Space,’ and in that movie there were no teenagers,” Fritz said. He’s updated his joke about expecting to see Frankie and Annette (from 1963’s “Beach Party”) to include Hanson and Justin Bieber.

Though Fritz has never broken out of regional stardom, he does draw people from as far as Michigan and Atlanta to his Ohio shows. He’s also been able to meet celebrities from Nancy Wilson to Gregory Peck. And for the past two years, he’s hosted

“Battling Butler,” A joint endeavor between the Cohen Film Collection and the Cineteca di Bologna, The Keaton Project aims to restore the films the great screen comedian Buster Keaton made between 1920 and 1928.

We’re excited to share one of the fruits of that labor, “Battling Butler,” in which Keaton plays a rich dandy who must pretend to be a fearsome boxer in order to win the love of a country girl. Keaton’s favorite of all his films. $8. 1:30 p.m.

Jazz at the MAC: Tony Hagood presents The Music of Horace Silver, Horace Silver got his break when he was recruited to play with Stan Getz in 1950. In addition to his short time with Getz, Silver also worked as a side man with Miles Davis, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Milt Jackson, and many others.

He moved to New York city where his reputation continued to spread as a great composer and for his bluesy inventive playing. Silver transitioned from playing bebop to hard bop which emphasized melody rather than complex harmony. Many of his compositions contain very catchy, memorable melodies that connect well with audiences.

Silver and Art Blakey co-founded the Jazz Messengers which was the start of Horace Silver’s influence of the art form.

His first big hit “The Preacher” was released on their Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers album. Although Silver wasn’t with the group long, the Messengers became a group that was a marker of talent and a proving ground for young musicians and went on to include such huge names as Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Keith Jarrett, Chuck Mangione, Wynton Marsalis etc. Many of Silver’s compositions have become jazz standards and are still played and recorded today some 63 years later. Zachariah’s Red Eye Reunion featuring McGuffey Lane & Friends, McGuffey Lane is a country rock band from central Ohio. In 1977, the band started playing at Zachariah’s Red Eye Saloon and soon became the house band. McGuffey Lane played at Zachariah’s through 1980. In August of 1980 they released their first self-titled album on Paradise Island Records selling 40,000 in the first three months.

The album reached #1 in Columbus during the fall of 1980 which gained the attention of Atlantic Records. Atlantic released the album nationally on its Atco Label with sales of 175,000. During the early 1980’s McGuffey Lane was a national act touring with Charlie Daniels, the Allman Brothers, The Judds and Marshall Tucker Band.

In 1981 they released their second album Aqua Dreams followed by their third album Let the Hard Times Roll released in 1982. They released their fourth and final album for Atlantic Day by Day. In 2001 McGuffey Lane organized the First Annual Zachariah’s Red Eye Saloon Reunion featuring themselves and other acts that performed during the Zach’s days. $19. 7 p.m.
