Things to ask yourself before actually doing it yourself (Metro Creative) — In addition to spending money to improve their homes, many homeowners are spending their time on carrying out projects on their own, as well.

While DIY projects can provide a sense of fulfillment and personal attachment to one’s home, prospective do-it-yourselfers should ask themselves some questions before picking up their hammers and getting to work.

Do I have any physical limitations?

No matter how much home improvement television shows may simplify projects, prospective DIYers should know that such undertakings are typically very difficult and oftentimes physically demanding.

Homeowners with existing health conditions or other physical limitations may not be capable of performing certain tasks or may need to take frequent breaks, which can delay projects.

Do I have the time?

Many home-improvement projects require a significant amount of time to complete.

Homeowners whose time is already stretched thin with commitments to work and/or family may not be able to complete projects within a reasonable amount of time.

That’s fine if working on a part of the home that won’t affect daily life, but can prove stressful or problematic if the project is in a room, such as a kitchen or bathroom, that residents of the home use each day.

Novice DIYers should be especially honest with themselves about the time they have available to work on the project, as such homeowners are bound to experience a few time-consuming missteps along the way.

Can I really afford it?

While DIY might seem more affordable than hiring a contractor, that’s not necessarily true.

Novice DIYers may need to buy or rent tools, and those costs can add up. Contractors already have the tools necessary to begin and complete projects, so the cost savings of DIY might not be as significant as homeowners think.

Before going the DIY route, homeowners should solicit estimates from contractors, comparing the estimates to how much a project will cost if homeowners do it themselves.

Can I go it alone?

Many home improvement projects require more than one set of hands, and it’s risky and even foolish for first-time DIYers to assume they can begin a project and see it through to completion entirely on their own.

Homeowners whose spouses, partners, friends or relatives are willing to chip in may think that’s enough.

However, the DIY skills of those who volunteer may be a mystery until the project begins. Novice DIYers should enlist the help of a friend or family member with home improvement experience. If no such person is available, it may be wise to hire a contractor instead.

Good homes, communities is goal of ‘Good Bones” crew Mother-daughter team revives areas through renovation business

The renovation bug bit mother and daughter team of Karen Laine and Mina Starsiak in 2007, when the two updated a home Starsiak purchased just after college.

Laine and Starsiak poured six months and about $160,000 into the house, which was built in the early 1920s.

When they finished the home, the duo moved onto a second and then a third, selling each as they went. At that point Starsiak told her mother, “I think we have a business.”

Mom and daughter did start a business — Two Chicks and a Hammer, now owned by Starsiak — and in 2016 became TV personalities on home flipping show “Good Bones” on HGTV, flipping abandoned homes in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Laine and Starsiak will appear at The Columbus Dispatch Fall Home & Garden Show at 3 p.m. Sept. 8 on the Simple Bath/Simple Kitchen Home Stage at the Ohio Expo Center Bricker Building.

The event also will feature more than 180 homeimprovement companies for a myriad of renovation needs, from room additions to kitchen, bath and basement remodels.

Starsiak described her and her mom’s first renovation as a “comedy of errors.” She had just graduated from Indiana University and was feeling a little aimless.

“I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do,” she said.

To avoid a desk job, Starsiak bought a house in a transitional neighborhood in Indianapolis. She said she didn’t have any money, so she and her mom did the work together.

“It was a really crappy house,” she said.

The neighborhood as well lent itself to a considerable amount of entertainment. A SWAT raid happened, for example, one day when the two were working on the home.

Early on, Starsiak said, they incorporated into their business model the goal of renovating not only homes, but communities, by renovating multiple

The renovations that Starsiak and her mother complete for “Good Bones” typically take from four to seven months. Most of the homes are built between 1890 and 1920, although many of the structures have lost whatever historical character they started out with, Starsiak said.

“Every time we finish a house, we love that house,” Laine said.

They then move onto the next house and feel the same way upon its completion, she said.

The two have renovated about 90 homes.

Although mother and daughter work as a team, the two actually have somewhat different design styles. Starsiak’s runs much more traditional to Laine’s eclectic taste. And since the properties are being remodeled to be resold, Laine said she’s usually the one watering down her style to appeal to a larger audience.

Not everyone, Laine said, likes sea green tile.

What people do like, it turns out, are kitchens and bathrooms — those are the big selling points within a house, the rooms where you “wow” people and pull

them in, Starsiak said.

When people are renovating their own homes, Laine said, the first question to ask is whether they are remodeling it for themselves or reselling it after the project is completed.

“Maybe purple tile is going to limit your buyer pool,” Laine said.

Laine also suggested having a reserve budget of time, money and patience — an extra 20 percent.

Contractors, she said, are the most optimistic people in the world. Their predictions should be seen as a minimum rather than a maximum.

People also should consider whether they want to live in the home as it is being worked on, she said.

There comes a point in the process, Laine said, when a home’s energy changes. It’s usually when new drywall is installing, seemingly giving the house a new life.

“That’s my favorite, when you can feel the house is happy again,” she said.

Q: What message will you bring to The Dispatch Home & Garden Show?

A: I’ll be talking about design and garden techniques that will help gardeners amplify the beauty of the spaces they’re working with, using some of my favorite plants and plant combinations that will flourish in the Ohio region.

And it’s important to me to drive home the importance of pollinators and to help people understand some of the best pollen producers that they can add to their garden for beauty and to help the planet.

Q: Will you have any other messages specific to this region?

A: Ohio, I’ve found, is a real hotbed of awareness of heritage breeds and of the conservation of genetics; seed genetics, poultry genetics, livestock

Ohio’s agricultural and horticultural diversity and awareness has garden designer, author and television host P. Allen Smith looking forward to his upcoming visit to Columbus, he said.

Smith, author of six bestselling books and the host of three television shows: “Garden Home,” distributed on PBS; “Garden to Table” on Create TV; and the syndicated “Garden Style,” will appear at The Dispatch Fall Home & Garden Show on Sept. 7.

The Dispatch recently spoke to Smith, 59, by phone from his 600-acre Moss Mountain Farm in Arkansas as he took a break from filming one of his shows.

(The interview has been edited for space.)

genetics. That’s a big part of our mission here at Moss Mountain Farm.

I know that a lot of backyard flockkeepers, gardeners, and small farmers in that region recognize these issues and are maybe more sensitive to them than in other parts of the country.

That audience gets what we do, so I feel a particular kinship to them. It’s always exciting for me to be there and talk about the things like that that I love.

Q: Will you share any information about your television shows?

A: We have a very strong fan base in Ohio. So I’ll talk about production of the shows and about visiting the farm (in Arkansas) and television production sessions there. We find that people are always curious about that.

And there will be plenty of time for some Q&A while I’m there.

Q: Why did you decide to become a communicator as well as a horticulturalist?

A: Our home, the planet, is very fragile right now. It’s incumbent upon all of us to do what we can to spread the word and raise awareness. This is all beyond politics, groups and organizations. As citizens of the globe we have to take actions.

I think getting important information out in a clear and authentic way helps people understand that. I try to distill the essence of the message, and communicate that essence, with hope it will bring clarity to the issue and inspire individuals to take action to improve the state of the planet.

Technology allows customers to get colorful with windows

Windows are by definition pretty square, but those wanting to break out of the mold can embrace custom exterior painting, a new trend that’s seeing some staying power.

Historically, vinyl windows were offered only in white and beige, said Michael Rosati, owner of Rosati Windows.

But recently a specialized painting process called custom exterior painting was developed and allows buyers to select colors for the exterior of the window frame.

“That’s still really, really, really big,” Rosati said.

Rosati said he’s seeing more of his customers getting colorful with their window choices.

“White windows are white windows.”

The most popular shades, he said, are earth tones such as taupe, and buyers tend to avoid brighter hues.

And while his business also offers 26 wood stains that can be used on the interior portion of windows, customers still tend to opt for vinyl for both exterior and interior faces of their new windows, Rosati said.

Although more customers are opting for the new color technology, they still favor traditional styles for the windows themselves.

Rosati said casement windows, which are the ones with panes that open outward, and double-hungs are the most popular styles, other than shapes and picture windows.

Buyers looking for traditional styles for either their own renovations or for home-flipping projects can stay with traditional white and beige colors for the interior and exterior window faces, such as white or neutral shades, Rosati said.

If you want to choose a brighter shade however, Rosati advocates for matching the color of the home rather than adding a new hue.

“You don’t want to keep adding col-

ors,” he said. “It just kind of throws the whole scheme off.”

From a performance perspective, Rosati suggests looking for specific certifications from entities such as the National Fenestration Rating Council, Energy Star and the American Architectural Manufacturers Association.

“The glass coming out today is amazing,” he said.

Other than picture windows, casement windows are probably the most efficient window, Rosati said, because they operate like a vault or door. Double-hung windows are not far behind in the energy-saving department.

Homeowners would do well to consider energy efficiency when replacing windows because drafty windows can increase a heating bill considerably and compromise comfort levels due to cold spots in the home, Rosati said.

One of the biggest problems with an old window is water penetration, Rosati said. The water that gets inside an old window can not only damage the window subframe, but also the wall, he said.

The replacement itself also could be quite short — Rosati said a 10-window replacement project could be completed in a day.

And customers who work with Rosati also can benefit from the fact that the company does both production and installation, Rosati said.

“If there’s a service problem, it’s our baby,” he said.

Oktoberfest settles in for celebration weekend after Labor Day

“(Schmidt’s has) been involved with Oktoberfest since day one,” Epler said.

The restaurant on East Kossuth Street in Columbus’ German Village helped launch the city’s first Oktoberfest with what was then known as the German Village League.

The event was first held in Schiller Park, but with it being a city park alcohol was prohibited, Epler said.

When it appeared the event might fold, George Schmidt, the restaurant’s late founder, stepped in with others and Oktoberfest was moved into the public streets of German Village, where special permits allowed for the sale and consumption of alcohol, Epler said.

However, times and locations were not consistent, something that continued even after the German Village Society assumed control of the event, Elper said.

Concerned about the weather for an outdoor event as well as finding suitable locations, the German Village Society announced the future of Oktoberfest was uncertain. It was then that Schmidt’s offered to take over organizing the event, Epler said.

“It’s a celebration of German culture,” said Epler, including its art, music, dance, wardrobe, food, and of course, libation.

Oktoberfest features multiple stages of entertainment, vendors, a “Markt Platz” with authentic foods and a wide variety of German beers.

Organizers of Columbus Oktoberfest are striving to create continuity for the annual celebration of German culture.

The 2019 Oktoberfest — in its 54th year — is Sept. 6-8 at the Ohio Expo Center, 717 E. 17th Ave. Oktoberfest will run 5 p.m. to midnight Friday, Sept. 6, noon to midnight Saturday, Sept. 7, and noon to 8 p.m.

Sunday, Sept. 8.

Admission is free, but parking is $10.

Oktoberfest runs concurrent with The Columbus Dispatch Fall Home & Garden Show, open each day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Oktoberfest is at the south end of the fairgrounds, accessed at the 11th Avenue entrance, and the Home & Garden Show is at the north end, accessed at the 17th Avenue entrance.

A shuttle between the two sites is available, and attendees at one event get in the other for free. Oktoberfest visitors can attend the Home & Garden Show for no cost by showing their Oktoberfest pamphlet at the ticket window.

This in the second consecutive year that Oktoberest has been held the weekend after Labor Day and the 11th year at the Expo Center, said Carla Epler, executive director of Columbus Oktoberfest and chief operating officer of Schmidt’s Restaurant and Sausage Haus, sponsors of Oktoberfest.

Epler said the dates for the event had been shuffled in the past to accommodate other events at the Expo Center, but organizers hope to have found a home on the weekend after Labor Day. “It’s been kind of nomadic in the past,” said Epler, referring to its movement to various locations before moving to the Expo Center in 2009.

Schmidt’s has been the sole sponsor since 2009, but its involvement in Oktoberfest dates back to its origin.

P. ALLEN SMITH APPEARING LIVE P. Allen Smith, an author, television host, entrepreneur and conservationist, has a passion for American style. He uses his Arkansas home, Moss Mountain Farm, which The New York Times hails as a

“stunning estate,” as an epicenter for promoting the local food movement, organic gardening and a grounded, natural lifestyle. The farm serves as a place of inspiration, education and conservation and a way to share ideas for growing food and flowers, entertaining, raising animals and cooking with his audience. And his popular show P. Allen Smith Garden Home is celebrating its 18th season on PBS TV. After Allen’s stage presentation he will greet guests for selfies in a location to be announced.

3:30 p.m. to 4:15 pm HGTV’S GOOD BONES KAREN E LAINE AND MINA STARSIAK When mother-daughter duo Karen E Laine and Mina Starsiak flipped their first house in the late 2000s under their banner Two Chicks and a Hammer, neither expected to eventually find themselves on an HGTV house-flipping show. But the self-proclaimed Midwestern girls are the stars of the hit show “Good Bones”, now in its fourth season. Racking up to the tune of 13 million viewers, the show has proven to be one of the network’s breakout hits.

Karen and Mina will share behind the scenes stories during their stage conversation, then greet guests for selfies afterwards.

Patrons of The Dispatch Home & Garden Show on Sept.

6-8 at the Ohio Exposition Center, 717 E. 17th Ave., might expect to improve their green thumb.

But they can also improve their culinary skills while sampling some of the best breads, cakes and cookies the Buckeye State has to offer.

Twelve blue-ribbon winners in a variety of kitchen competitions at the 2019 Ohio State Fair are scheduled to attend the Fall Home & Garden Show, open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Ohio Exposition Center.

The winners will bring the freshest incarnation of their prize-winning creations for patrons to sample and provide demonstrations.

Among the prize-winning bakers and chefs expected to participate are Jeff Bartolozzi and Betty Howell.

Bartolozzi, of Columbus, won Best of Show among all cookies and pastries for his coffee and Bailey’s macarons.

Bartolozzi did not even

know what a macaron was until eight years ago, he said.

“I was working at a restaurant, and the pastry chef brought in a tray (of macarons).

I asked what they were and he looked at me like I had three heads and told me ‘they’re macarons,’ ” Bartolozzi said.

“I tried one and thought they were great,” and began learning to bake his own, he said.

Espresso macaron shells are standard fare, Bartolozzi explained, so he added Bailey’s Irish Cream to it.

The filling is milk chocolate Bailey’s Ganache, he said.

To give them another personal touch, Betrolozzi said he chopped Valencia orange rinds and sprinkled it into the filling.

“I think doing that (gave the macarons) more texture that presented well in the competition,” said Betrolozzi, who will provide a demonstration of how he created the macarons at the Home & Garden Show.

Betty Howell, of Batavia, which is east of Cincinnati, won Best of Show in the quick breads category at the state fair.

Quick breads are those made without yeast, such as muffins and biscuits, said Howell, who two years ago won Best of Show in the yeast-bread category.

This year, created orange blueberry bread.

“I have a three-ring binder of all the recipes I’ve learned during the years,” said Howell, who enjoys making breads with her grandchildren, passing on what she learned from her mother.

Howell and her mother first began traveling to the state fair about 20 years ago for culinary competitions, she said.

“It was kind of a motherand-daughter activity that I’m passing along to my grandchildren,” Howell said.

“The orange blueberry bread is a recipe I tweaked”, she said, which included using orange juice and rinds.

“The orange glaze on top is my touch, (and) I think seals the deal,” Howell said.

Other Best of Show and first-place creations at the Home & Garden Show are: caramel apple and walnut cake, pepperoni pizza, spicy brisket

and pork chili, bananasplit truffles, Ritz-Carlton lemon pound cake, Nellie’s potato salad, wholewheat apple muffins with walnuts, baklava, zucchini cheddar bread and British sticky toffee pudding and baklava.

Perennials, hydrangeas and ornamental grasses will occupy much of the garden with other touches as well, Castorano said.

“The goal is to keep it interesting as the season changes.”

Nick Besser, a landscape architect for Hilliard-based Ripenhoff Landscape, said a key to a successful backyard garden is for it to “have its own entity.”

Besser said his design will use an evergreen foundation with mums and Black-eyed Susan “to enhance fall color.

“There are quite a few options for fall color,” said Besser, adding that he will decide the final touches to his display

Central Ohio backyard gardens garner awards As part of the annual Home & Garden Show, the Columbus Dispatch launched a new contest last year aimed at recognizing the impressive variety of gardens found in yards across central Ohio. This year Oakland Nurseries is presenting the program in partnership with Franklin Park Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, OSU Master Gardeners, The Sunday Dispatch At Home Section, and the Home & Garden Show.

The Dispatch Backyard Garden Awards are a series of contests seeking to find the best central Ohio gardens in six categories: Home landscaping, vegetable garden, container garden, community garden, native plant garden and perennial garden. Judges from the Ohio State University Master Gardener Program are evaluating the entries, and will choose first-, second- and third-place winners in each category.

entries from 207 people. Mike Hogan, one of the judges with the OSU Master Gardener Program, said he was surprised by the quality of the entries.

“We were blown away; not many of them are very pedestrian,” he said. “They’re all amazing gardens or landscapes or settings. So we were kind of surprised with the number of applications, but also the breadth or depth of creativity and design features.”

Hogan said many entries had a “wow factor” that he thinks are missing from many gardens, and said he thinks they’re all comfortably above the average level of gardens in central Ohio.

“I was a little surprised at how many people look like they spend a lot of time on the design detail and plant selection,” he said. “They didn’t just go to the garden center and get what was put out. They were very strategic in what they planted from a design aesthetic point of view.”

Winners will be announced on Saturday, September 7 at the Home & Garden Show, during a ceremony that will celebrate every entry. Some of the winners will be featured in an upcoming edition of the Sunday Dispatch At Home section, and each winner will get their picture with P. Allen Smith. In addition, each winner will receive a plaque and each of the six categories will award a first place prize of $250; second place prize of $100 and third place prize of $50. The overall best garden from all entries submitted will be named Best of Show and receive a $500 prize. All prizes will be awarded in gift certificates to Oakland Nurseries who presented the program.

The display will utilize an overhead wood arbor to create a canopy.

“The walls will be plantings,” and enhanced with other colors, Besser said.

Powell-based Simes Landscape also will present a design.

Simes can help homeowners’ spruceup back yards with just a few plants or an entire landscape, according to its website.

Computer imaging, in addition to the show exhibit, can show a homeowner how to create “a picture-perfect landscape and bring the ‘wow’ factor to your yard,” says the company’s website.

Presented by Rosati Windows, the Fall Home & Garden Show will showcase indoor backyard gardens by three central Ohio designers to provide patrons with an illustration of the kinds of color that be enjoyed during the transition from summer to fall.

Simes Landscape, Ripenhoff Landscape and Wood Landscape Services each will have an exhibit.

“We want you to envision it in your own backyard,” Santina Castorano, a

landscape designer for Wood Landscape Services, said about the design she will display at the show.

Wood Landscape Services does not have a retail site.

Castorano said she focused on including a “fall punch” in her design, which includes a variety of hydrangeas and lateblooming perennials.

A pergola is at the center of the Castorano’s design.

“I worked on creating divisions of space (but) also want it to have a focus.”

Castorano said that decision will be among the last made, but that a piece of artwork will be included.

The mission of the Master Gardener Volunteers is to educate others with timely research-based gardening information. That’s why the Dispatch Home and Garden Shows are indebted to them for volunteering to meet the public, provide information, and answer some of the toughest gardening questions at our shows.

Master Gardener volunteers will again participate at the fall Home & Garden Show. In preparation, we asked them to share some of the more typical fall gardening questions people ask. Stop by and get answers to these questions or any of your tough yard and garden questions.

• Can trees and shrubs be planted in the fall?

About Master Gardener Volunteers The Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener Volunteer (MGV) program provides intensive training in horticulture to interested Ohio residents who then volunteer their time assisting with educational programs and activities for Ohio residents through their local OSU Extension county office. Volunteers are not required to have gardening skills or knowledge; a passion for learning about gardening and sharing this knowledge with others is a must!

Working with county Extension personnel, Master Gardener Volunteers provide educational services to their communities such as: answering gardening questions from the public; conducting plant clinics; gardening activities with children, senior citizens, or disabled persons; beautifying the community; develop-

ing community or demonstration gardens; and other horticultural activities.

AT THE SHOW: HEARING HEALTH EXPERIENCE — FREE HEARING SCREENING

Songs for sound | from silence to sound After not being diagnosed for nearly a year and half, the Vernon family (native to Columbus) heard the words “your child is deaf.” Their hearts sank not knowing how Lexi’s precious little life would turn out. Their world had been shattered. Four months later, Lexi was implanted bilaterally with cochlear implants. Lexi went from total deafness to hearing a whisper.

Now, Lexi thrives in academics, sports and more. She can hear at 20 dBs like most normal hearing people and she also throws a nasty riseball as a travel softball pitcher.

Point? She lives life to the fullest.

After their initial experiences with hearing loss, Lexi’s parents Kevin and Jaime Vernon knew something had to change. Lexi’s hearing deficit was repeatedly missed at checkups and even at a hearing evaluation. They were told “she is fussy which is why she failed the hearing test.” Jaime admits one of the most difficult things to feel as a mother is “my

child never responding to my lullaby and I didn’t even know she couldn’t hear me.”

This story is one people of all ages repeatedly tell as it relates to hearing health. Americans don’t know where to go, how to get help, what insurance covers or doesn’t cover and how to afford devices to live their own life to the fullest.

That’s why Jaime and Kevin started Songs for Sound in 2011. It is a 501c3 charity providing free hearing health services and information. While they have multiple programs, the Hearoes Tour is a hearing health experience providing free hearing screenings, hearing information, free hearing protection and help accessing benefits or even low to no cost hearing aids.

The Columbus Dispatch is partnering with the charity, Songs for Sound, to offer this free service at the Home & Garden Show!

Hiring a Home Improvement Contractor?

Start with Trust!

possible, inspect the contractor’s work yourself.

Ask for multiple quotes. Always shop around and get at least three quotes from different businesses and make sure the bids consider the same set of criteria. Remember that the lowest bid may not necessarily be the best bid; if one bid is significantly lower than the others are, the contractor may be cutting corners or may not understand your work requirements and needs.

Get it in writing. Always get estimates in writing and never let any work begin without a written and signed contract. Do not be pressured into signing an agreement before you are ready and make sure you read and understand everything before signing.

The contract should include contact information, start and complete dates, a detailed description of the exact work to be done, any material costs, payment arrangements, and warranty information. Specify who is to obtain necessary building permits and who is responsible for clean-up. Make sure all verbal promises are included in the contract.

Ask how much work will be subcontracted and ask for information on the subcontractors. Ask questions if you do not understand any part of the contract.

Never sign an incomplete or partially blank contract.

Verify license and insurance.

Always be sure that the company you

decide to work with has the necessary licenses and insurance to work in your region. Once you have your contractor’s insurance information, call the carrier to confirm appropriate coverage for workers compensation, property damage, and personal liability in case of accidents.

Confirm building permits. Your contractor must have the correct permits before starting your project. They will usually obtain the permits, but you will probably pay for them. That should be detailed in your contract.

Inquire about a lien waiver. A lien wwaiver is a statement from your contractor that says all suppliers and

subcontractors have been paid for their work.

Arrange a payment schedule.

Never pay in full up front. Stagger your payments so your final payment is not due until the work is complete and you have fully inspected it. Do not pay cash; make sure a check is written to a company, not an individual, or that you use a credit card.

Get a receipt. Request a receipt marked “Paid in Full” when the job is completed and your final payment made.

Keep your contract. Hold on to your contract for future reference or if any questions arise after the work is complete.

At bbb.org, you can find ratings for businesses across North America, see if there are any complaints or customer reviews submitted for a company, and find a list of trusted businesses to use as a starting point.

BBB knows that your home is your safe haven, and choosing someone to work on - or in - your home is one of life’s big decisions. The last thing anyone wants to have happen is for a company to start a job and not finish, or to ineffectively repair your home.

When you’re mapping out resources to plan your renovation or improvement project, be sure to add BBB to the list.
