Officials work to ensure Memorial legacy

Since 2013, Swedish professional golfer David Lingmerth has opted to travel to central Ohio instead of playing in the European Tour’s Nordea Masters in his homeland.

“It’s a little heartbreaking not to get to play in Sweden,” he said. “Sometimes you have to make those decisions.”

After his first two Memorial Tournament appearances, it looked as though Lingmerth had made the wrong choice, as he tied for 57th in 2013 and tied for 49th in 2014. Last year, his decision paid off, as the then-27-year-old shot a 15under-par 273 over four rounds and defeated 2010 champion Justin Rose on the third hole of a playoff.

With the win, Lingmerth’s perks quickly piled up. He entered the week the 212thranked golfer in the world.

Entering The Players Championship held May 12-15, Lingmerth was 49th. Also by win-

ning the Memorial, he earned a berth at the Masters in April and a three-year exemption on the PGA Tour.

“I think it’s more like a twoyear exemption, right?” Lingmerth asked in his post-tournament press conference last year before being corrected by a PGA Tour official. “Oh, it’s three years? That’s definitely nice.”

Perks, purse and the course are what attracts the world’s best players to come to Muirfield Village each year. Memorial officials are well aware of the priority to keep those signature traits improving.

“We’ve been working with Jack (Nicklaus) and (tournament executive director) Dan Sullivan the last three to four years on how we can keep this event the next level down from a major,” said Nationwide CEO Steve Rasmussen, whose Columbus-based insurance company has been the tournament’s presenting sponsor since 2011. “We don’t want to just be another tournament, and I think we accomplished that.”

The purse will increase $200,000 each of the next six years, keeping the Memorial among the highest regular-season prize money events on the PGA Tour. During the 201516 season, only eight events – four of which are majors – have a higher purse than the Memo-

rial.

“I’m extremely proud of this tournament’s first 40 years,” Nicklaus said. “The enhancements we’ve made with the Tour, I’m looking forward to the next 40, too. This is a legacy I’m very proud of what’s happened here and many other people should be proud, too.”

Sullivan is in his 15th year as the tournament’s executive director and is tasked with keeping that legacy intact and improving. The popularity of other tournaments on the PGA Tour, such as the Byron Nelson Classic and even Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Invitational, has ebbed and flowed.

“We want to ensure the Memorial Tournament has a place in the golf industry as one of the top events,” Sullivan said. “We’re always growing. You have to. Too many other events have failed or weakened over time. We don’t want to become one of those.

We have a great asset here that we want to keep growing.”

The high purse and great course help draw the players, but so, too, does the place in the calendar. The Memorial is played two weeks before the season’s second major, the U.S. Open. Many pros like to play

at Muirfield Village, then take a week off to prepare for what typically is a grueling test at the U.S. Open.

This year’s Memorial is no exception. As of May 11, the top three players in the World Golf Ranking – No. 1 Jason Day, No. 2 Jordan Spieth and No. 3 Rory McIlroy – will play along with No. 7 Adam Scott and No. 8 Dustin Johnson.

Spieth is coming off an incredible 2014-15 PGA Tour season in which he had 15 top10s in 25 starts, including five wins, two majors (Masters, U.S. Open), a second place at the PGA Championship, a tie for fourth at the British Open and he won the FedExCup title.

Spieth looked as though he would continue his major success at Augusta National in April before a quadruple bogey 7 on the par-3 12th knocked him from atop the leaderboard.

Danny Willet shot a final-round 67 to finish the tournament 5 under, three strokes ahead of Spieth.

“Starr” has a Master’s degree, but instead of putting it to good use, he’s been a caddy for almost 10 years.

“I started caddying in grad school on some mini tours,” Starr said. “After the awesome guy I caddied for got done playing, I asked myself, ‘What can I do to continue doing this?’ I started at Muirfield Village, been doing it ever since instead of using my Master’s degree.”

Each hole description is a combination of the discussions ThisWeek had with four caddies on how golfers – pros and amateurs alike – should attack all 18 holes at Muirfield Village. Those descriptions appear on subsequent pages in this Memorial Tournament preview section.

It lasts seven months of the year with sevenday work weeks. Duties entail lugging heavy golf bags up and down steep hills – yes, there are hills in central Ohio – in the scorching summer heat.

But for most caddies at Muirfield Village Golf Club, the job is a dream.

According to club policy, only certain MVGC employees are allowed to talk to the media. The policy excludes caddies. ThisWeek reached out to four caddies at Muirfield Village who agreed to discuss each hole if promised anonymity.

Honoree Miller still cherishes ’73 Open win

Whenever Johnny Miller returns to Oakmont Country Club, the course where many think he produced “the greatest round of golf ever played,” he is treated differently than other golfers.

“Like a rock star,” he said.

Miller entered the final round of the 1973 U.S. Open at Oakmont, located on the outskirts of Pittsburgh, in 12th place and six shots behind

the leaders. Coming off a 5-over-par 76 in the third round, he proceeded to shoot a 63 to become the first to card that number in a major. No one has ever gone lower since.

Entering this year’s U.S. Open, set for June 16-19 at Oakmont, there have been 27 63s shot in major championships – two at the Masters, four in the U.S. Open, eight in the British Open and 13 in the PGA Championship.

Miller birdied the first four holes in 1973 and hit every green in regu-

lation, 10 of which were to within 10 feet.

“I still remember every shot,” he said. “I was groomed to be a U.S. Open champion by my father. It was always about winning the U.S. Open, not British, not PGA Championship or the Masters. In that time period, the U.S. Open to an American was by far the most important tournament of the year.”

Miller, 69, is this year’s Memorial Tournament honoree. He competed in 10 Memorial Tournaments,

making the cut each time but never winning. He had only one top-10 finish, tying for third in 1986. His last appearance was in 1989, the year he retired.

“I was delighted to have Johnny Miller as this year’s honoree,” Jack Nicklaus said. “He can come here and see what we do and how we go about doing things here in Columbus.”

Miller also won the 1976 British Open and totaled 25 victories on the PGA Tour, with his last coming in 1994 at Pebble Beach, five years after

Big Three takes over for Woods

Baptist enjoying new role at tourney Bob Baptist, a retired sports writer for The Columbus Dispatch, possesses a piece of paper most central Ohio golfers dearly covet.

“I got a certificate from Muirfield Village last year that I could go out there and play whenever I want,” Baptist said.

“It’s still on my desk at home.

I know that doesn’t go over well with golfers, but it’s just too hard of a DON golf course.

DELCO If I’m going to go play golf, I want to play somewhere easier where I can make pars or bogeys.”

Baptist has attended the last 38 Memorial Tournaments, 37 of which he spent as a member of the media. Last year was the first time he went simply as a fan.

His first Memorial was in 1978, two years after the inaugural tournament. He grew up obsessed with baseball and, so when he was tasked with covering a professional golf tournament in July 1977, he was “flying by the seat of my pants.”

Baptist moved to Columbus in August 1976 and the next summer The Dispatch assigned him to cover an LPGA event at Riviera Golf Club in Dublin.

His job must have pleased his bosses, because the next spring he began what was an almost four-decade golf beat.

His first Memorial Tournament was 1978, when rounds were delayed because of bad weather until Jim Simmons prevailed. It served as foreshadowing of long days to come.

“Back then, I had an old computer system where we couldn’t name our stories with no longer than eight charac-

“Guys who play for money never quit and grind it out to make that money,” Miller said. “For me, it was about winning. I got to a point where I wasn’t going to win because I was putting so bad so I would just be playing for money. It was time to go be a father.”

After his win at Pebble Beach in 1994, Miller remained retired while traveling down his new career path.

Two years ago in the weeks preceding the Memorial Tournament, Jack Nicklaus said, “Tournament golf is very healthy.”

He was posed the question because Tiger Woods’ dominance has been a thing of the past since 2010. In the last six years, Woods has played in 74 events and won eight times (three in 2012, five in 2013), but mostly his headlines are centered on his personal or health issues.

It was quite a change from when Woods dominated the PGA Tour from 1996-2009.

He won 71 tournaments during that span, including 14 majors.

It was him versus everyone else.

Since Nicklaus made the above comment, Jason Day, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth have won a combined five majors during Woods’ drought.

It is now the Big Three versus everyone else, which includes Woods.

“The competition is very

stiff,” Day said the week of the Masters in April. “We’re all motivating each other to try and play better each and every week and each and every year. If one of us plays well, then usually there’s twoout-of-three or three-out-ofthree guys that are going to step up practicing and play harder because it’s inspiring and motivating to watch the other guy win because you know that you can do it, and why can’t it be you?

“And then obviously you’ve got the 30-somethings. It’s just really fun to see how the health of the game is right now and how competitive it is.”

Bubba Watson, 37, won the Masters in 2012 and 2014 and Adam Scott, 35, won the Masters in 2013 and won back-toback tournaments earlier this season during the PGA Tour’s Florida swing.

Meanwhile, Rickie Fowler, 27, who won The PLAYERS Championship in 2015, was ranked fifth in the world after the Masters in April behind Day (first), Spieth (second),

Scioto Country Club to be host of event

The Memorial Tournament isn’t the only big-time professional golf tournament taking place in central Ohio this year.

And the ties to Jack Nicklaus remain prevalent.

Scioto Country Club will play host to the 2016 U.S. Senior Open from Aug. 11-14. The par-72, 7,140-yard course located in Upper Arlington is brimming with golf history, most notably it is where, in 1950, Nicklaus struck his first golf ball and would learn DELCO >> A7 the game before turning pro 11 years

later.

“Jack’s legacy and history of great golf (that) he’s played literally started at Scioto,” said Walt Dennis, the general chairman for the 2016 U.S. Senior Open and whose family has been members of the club since 1956. “To have this tournament coincide with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the club makes it all that more special.”

The Donald Ross-designed course opened in 1916 and has hosted the 1926 U.S. Open won by Bobby Jones, the 1931 Ryder Cup, the 1950 PGA Championship, the 1968 U.S. Amateur and the 1986 U.S. Senior Open.

“Courses built from 1910-11 and 25

years after that in the mid-1930s are the golden age of golf course architecture,” said Mike Trostel, the United States Golf Association (USGA) museum director. “Scioto is no different. It is a Donald Ross gem, and what really contributes to Scioto’s stature in the game are all the great championships and champions that have gone through there.”

Jones, who never turned pro, is known for winning the game’s grand slam in 1930, which meant winning the U.S. Open, the British Open, the U.S. Amateur and the British Amateur.

He also helped design Augusta National Golf Club and co-founded the Mas-

ters. He played in 31 majors and won 13 before retiring in 1930.

When Jones won at Scioto in 1926, a teenaged Charlie Nicklaus was in attendance. According to Trostel, that was when the Nicklaus’ reverence for Jones began.

“That 1926 Open had such influence on Charlie. He passed it along to (his son) Jack,” Trostel said. “Charlie was Jack’s best friend and mentor and Jack even considered not turning pro because both father and son had such respect for Bobby Jones. Jones and Scioto had a big influence on Jack, and it stemmed

Lingmerth’s first career win was bit of a surprise

By DON DELCO THISWEEKSPORTS.COM Since 1976, the Memorial Tournament has been one of the premier sporting events in central Ohio’s yearly calendar and one of the more popular events on the PGA Tour for pros and fans alike. Here is a summary of the previous 40 Memorial tournaments.

2015

Champion: David Lingmerth (-15) Honoree: Nick Faldo Recap: For the second consecutive season, a PGA Tour player earned his first career win at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Lingmerth held off 2010 Memorial champion Justin Rose on the third playoff hole for the victory. Lingmerth entered the week ranked 212th in the world.

He left Dublin ranked 71st.

“I guess I didn’t really think about (winning at the start of the week),” Lingmerth said. “I just tried to put a few nice rounds of golf together, and that was pretty much it.”

Lingmerth and Rose both carded pars on No. 18 twice to force the third playoff hole to move to No. 10. Lingmerth’s tee shot on the 471-yard, par-4 hole found the fairway while Rose was in the right rough behind a tree. Lingmerth was away and put his approach in the center of the green. Rose had 147 yards to the hole, but the tree forced him to hit a low cut. His ball found the rough on the left side of the green, and he was unable to get up and down for par. Lingmerth made a 4-foot, 6-inch putt for the victory, ending the longest playoff in Memorial history.

Defending champion Hideki Matsuyama and 2002 Memorial champion Jim Furyk tied for fifth at 12-under and fivetime winner Tiger Woods finished in last place. Woods carded a third-round 85, which was his worse score as a pro, topping an 82 he shot in the second round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open on Jan. 30, 2015.

2014

Champion: Hideki Matsuyama (-13) Honorees: Annika Sorenstam, Jim Barnes, Joe Carr and Willie Park Sr. Recap: In only his second appearance at Muirfield Village, Matsuyama became the tournament’s youngest winner after defeating Kevin Na on the first playoff hole.

Matsuyama closed with a 3under 69, including a birdie on the 72nd hole to force a playoff and become the only player in Memorial Tournament history to birdie No. 18 all four rounds. Two hours before Matsuyama completed his final round, Na finished with a finalround 8-under 64 after starting the day seven shots back of 54hole leader Bubba Watson.

2013

Past champs

Champion: Matt Kuchar, 276 (-12) Honoree: Raymond Floyd Recap: In his first seven appearances at the Memorial Tournament, Kuchar missed the cut only once (2003) and finished tied for second in 2011, tied for eighth in ’10, tied for fifth in ’09 and tied for 10th in ’08.

As Kuchar arrived to central Ohio after a one-year hiatus, it appeared he was due.

“I felt in control of the tournament,” Kuchar said. “I had a nice little cushion there for most of the (final) day and felt comfortable out there.”

In the final round, Kuchar hit 13 of 14 fairways and 16 of 18 greens in regulation to card a 4-under-par 68 and finish 12under 276, two strokes ahead of Kevin Chappell.

Meanwhile, defending champion and five-time winner of the Memorial, Tiger Woods, was full of mistakes. Woods made two triple-bogeys in the same tournament for the first time since 1997. In addition, his four-day total of 8-over 296 was his second-highest tournament score of his career.

Woods’ lowlight was a 7-over par 79 in the third round.

“It happens,” Woods said.

“It happens to us all.”

272 (-16) Honoree: Nancy Lopez Recap: Stricker, who had not finished in the top 10 in his 11 previous trips to Muirfield Village, shot a 4-under-par 68 in the final round to finish with a 16-under-par 272 to edge Matt Kuchar and Brandt Jobe by one stroke. Kuchar and Jobe each carded a 65 in the final round.

Stricker’s final round was aided by saving par from the bunkers on Nos. 16 and 17, making putts of 15 and seven feet, respectively. He carded all four rounds below 70, scoring 68, 67 and 69 in the first three rounds.

Champion: Tiger Woods, 279 (-9) Honoree: Tom Watson Recap: For the fifth time since 1999, Woods walked off the No. 18 green at Muirfield Village Golf Club as champion of the Memorial Tournament.

Woods began the final round four shots behind leader Spencer Levin but birdied three of the last four holes to card a final round 5-under-par 67. He finished at 9-under-par 279, twoshots ahead of Andres Romero and Rory Sabbatini.

Woods’ charge on the back nine in the final round was highlighted by the shot of the tournament. On the redesigned par3 16th, Woods holed a 50-foot flop shot from behind the green for birdie.

“If he’s short, the tournament is over,” Memorial founder and course designer Jack Nicklaus said. “If he’s long, the tournament is over. He puts it in the hole. What a shot. I don’t think under the circumstances I’ve seen a better shot.”

The victory marked Woods’ 73rd on the PGA Tour, tying Nicklaus for second all-time behind Sam Snead’s 82 wins.

Woods is the fastest in PGA Tour history to get 73 wins at the age of 36 years, 5 months, 4 days.

“It’s awfully special to just have won this event,” Woods said. “To do it here with Jack there at 18, it’s awfully special for us as players to have him there and to greet us after we finish.”

Champion: Justin Rose, 270 (-18) Honoree: Seve Ballesteros Recap: Rose’s first PGA Tour victory came in the Memorial and the South African-born golfer did it in flawless fashion.

He shot a bogey-free 6-underpar 66 in the final round that included one-putting greens on eight consecutive holes and 11 overall.

“To win here at the Memorial, at Jack’s tournament, I couldn’t think of a better place to win my first tournament,” Rose said.

Rose finished at 18-underpar 270, three shots ahead of PGA Tour rookie Rickie Fowler. Rose joined Keith Fergus (1981), Kenny Perry (1991) and Tom Lehman (1994) as players who earned their first PGA Tour victory by winning the Memorial.

2009

Champion: Tiger Woods, 276 (-12) Honorees: JoAnne Carner and Jack Burke, Jr. Recap: Woods became the Memorial Tournament’s first four-time winner with birdies on the 71st and 72nd holes.

He took the tournament lead on the par-4 17th after his 9iron got him within nine feet of the pin, and his approach shot on No. 18 was a 7-iron from 183 yards that landed about a foot from the pin. He tapped in to record a final-round 65 and finish at 12-under-par 276, one stroke ahead of runner-up Jim Furyk.

Champion: Kenny Perry, 280 (-8) Honorees: Tony Jacklin, Ralph Guldahl, Charles B. Macdonald and Craig Wood Recap: At the age of 47, Perry became the oldest winner of the Memorial Tournament and tied Tigers Woods as the event’s only three-time winner.

Perry trailed Matthew Goggin by three strokes entering the final round before carding a 3under-par 69 to finish at 8under-par 280. Perry finished two strokes ahead of Goggin, Jerry Kelly, Justin Rose and Mike Weir.

Perry took the tournament lead for good when Weir’s approach on the par-4 10th came up short. Weir was unable to get up-and-down for par.

Meanwhile, Perry saved par out of a bunker on No. 12 and from behind the green at No. 14. A birdie putt at No. 15 gave him a three-stroke lead with three holes to play.

The $1,035,000 winner’s take marked the first time the Memorial champion earned seven figures.

Pettersson’s tournament-saving shot in the final round came at No. 11. Going for the par-5 green in two, his approach sailed over the green and into the rough. From there, he chipped in from 35 feet for a birdie, extending his lead back to three strokes.

For the first time in 10 years, the tournament did not feature Tiger Woods, whose father, Earl, passed away May 3, 2006.

First-tee nerves are a real thing.

(For) most people who play here, this is a once-in-a-lifetime event. They’re shaking. They’re more nervous than their wedding day. I’ve seen everything from a whiff, to hitting a drive on (the) No. 9 green to hitting it on Jack’s property. I’ve seen some bad swings. Sometimes, you just gotta hit a breakfast ball. Off the tee, the aiming point is always the tallest tree, just left of the bunker to the right. On the approach, I usually give them yardage to the front of the green. Normally, you add on 15 yards so they’re in the center. No. 1 is the largest green on the course. If they can prove to me they’re going to hit a green, No. 1 is their best shot. You feel your player out in the first two holes. After that, you can understand what you’re dealing with the rest of the day.

This is Spieth’s fourth consecutive Memorial appearance and last year was his only top10 finish, as he tied for third after a final-round 7-underpar 65.

McIlroy, a four-time major winner and two-time PGA Tour Player of the Year, did not play in last year’s Memorial and has only one top-10 finish in six appearances in the event, having finished fifth in 2011.

Day is a Westerville resident and a member at Muirfield Village, but in eight starts at the Memorial, his best finish has been a tie for 27th in 2009. The 2015 PGA Championship winner missed the cut last year.

Another local player, Ethan Tracy, earned a sponsor’s exemption. Tracy is a 2008 Hilliard Darby High School graduate who played for the University of Arkansas, the same college for which Lingmerth played.

“I grew up coming to this tournament, trying to chase down autographs,” Tracy said.

wanted to pursue this as long as I could.”

Tracy is playing on the Mackenzie Tour this year in Canada and has conditional status on the Web.com Tour.

The Memorial will be his second PGA Tour event. He tied for second in the Monday qualifier for the Wells Fargo Championship held May 5-8, but missed the cut by three strokes after shooting 73 and 76 in the first two rounds.

“That was a good icebreaker for me on the PGA Tour level,” he said. “I really learned a lot on how to handle those nerves.”

Tracy especially will need to handle his nerves on the final three holes. There were no on-course changes to Muirfield Village from last year.

Nicklaus’ latest tweaks to the course, a renovated No. 16 in

2010 and a lengthened No. 18 in 2013, continue to factor in determining the Memorial champion.

At last year’s event, the 484yard, par-4 18th was the toughest hole playing to an average of 4.241, the 201-yard, par-3 16th was the third toughest at 3.186 and the 478-yard, par-4 17th was the fifth toughest at 4.115.

Most pros don’t hit driver off this tee and most amateurs shouldn’t hit it, either.

Everything slopes toward that creek along the right side. You want to be down the left center of the fairway, and a good drive leaves you a mid- to high-iron in your hands. There are a lot of misses left, but if you are in the fairway, you’ll have the ball below your feet. Most try and compensate and, if they don’t put it in the water right, it’s in the bunker or rough left. It is a fairly flat green and one of the least severe sloping greens. A lot of approaches come up short, but that’s OK. (Go) over the back of that green and you’re dead.

Last year, Jason Day held a fundraising outing. I saw him drive the green. During the tournament, he’ll hit a 2-iron in the middle of the fairway, but on that day, he took driver over those trees. For normal people, I tell them to split the bunkers straight away and you need to be at least 220 (yards) to clear the trees on the left for a good approach. It is amazing how much difference pin placement makes.

The drive is easy on this hole, the approach is everything. If the pin is in the back, it’s ridiculously hard.

The green is at least two tiers and nothing stays in the middle. You tell your golfer to aim for the middle and hope to two putt.

The funny thing is, the approach is not a hard shot, but you see so many balls (go) in that water. It’s very intimidating for the amateurs.

This can be the hardest hole on the course.

I caddied for Jason Dufner in the Memorial Tournament Pro-Am before, and he told me this is his favorite par 4 on the course. (Laughs) Anything short and left is dead. Normally, we’ll tell the golfer to split the right bunker and pin. Everything feeds to the left on that green. If you’re short, as long as it doesn’t hold up in the fairway, it’ll run to the left side of the green. If you can hit the right spot of the green, it’ll feed to the pin and end up maybe left or back left. The bunkers on the right are death unless you’re a really good player. I’ve also seen balls end up in the right rough behind the bunker. You might as well pick up your ball and throw it to the other side of the green.

Almost everybody does not have enough spin from those lies. It is the only par 3 (where) you can get away with hitting a bad shot. You can top an iron and have it roll up there.

“I heard (former golfer and sportscaster) Dave Marr once say he lasted so long by sugarcoating everything he announced,” Miller said. “No one complained at what he said.”

Miller saw an opportunity for something different. Whether he was watching golf or football or basketball on TV, he was amazed when a player would perform under pressure and knew when a player was faltering because of it.

“People appreciate you being real,” Miller said. “Announcers would never say a player is nervous, but to me that is the most interesting part of sports. Michael Jordan could still put the ball in the hoop and have his team win by one (point) even though everyone knew he was getting the ball.

“I work with a great team at NBC, and you don’t want two Johnny Millers. But it’s nice to have some balance and someone address and document why a player is choking.”

•RECORDS KEEP BREAKING – The Legends Luncheon continues to break records and raise expectations and money.

At this year’s luncheon in April, the fundraiser obtained the largest single-year donation in the event’s history at $1.1 million, bringing the six-year total to $4,005,363.53. All proceeds from the luncheon go toward the patients and their families at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

This is just a beautiful hole.

Once you make that turn after the tee shot, it’s gorgeous. This is a risk-reward hole for the pros. A 3-wood or hybrid off the tee leaves them about 200 yards to the green with a nice bailout area on the right. Never go for the left side of the fairway.

It’s a sucker slope and most golfers don’t realize the green is elevated. Right side is the place to be. I take my golfer up the right side because it’s easier for us, too, so we don’t have to walk across the creek. But it’s also a smarter golf play. And the No. 5 green is where we search for balls in that water. At Muirfield Village, you’re not finding Pinnacles. They’re all ProV1s.

This is a straightforward drive.

If you keep it down the left center, it’ll feed left to right. Just split the bunkers down the middle. Not much to the tee shot. I had a guy hit it into the water from the blue tees. I told him give it as much as you got. He did. He bombed it about 295 (yards), one skip and it was in the water.

I felt horrible. For the older guys, it’s a three-shot hole. If you have good players, the slope of the green creates a backstop. Bad players, you’re digging balls out of the water.

Because the green slops right to left, I’ve seen some of the most fun putts that go up to the top of the ridge and then back down. Ideally, you want to be below the pin on this hole, because you want to putt uphill.

In its first year, the Legends Luncheon raised $250,000.

“We all know the competitor Jack is,” Nationwide Insurance CEO Steve Rasmussen said.

“His immediate reaction that year was, ‘You guys can do better.’ ” “Not that $250,000 was bad,” Nicklaus interjected.

“Six years later, you can see what a little prodding can accomplish,” Rasmussen said.

•AWARDS KEEP COMING – This year marked the 30th anniversary of Nicklaus’ 18th and final major victory at the Masters in 1986.

Nicklaus’ career still resonates despite the three decades that have passed since his sixth and last win at Augusta.

In December 2015, he received the Muhammad Ali Legacy award from Sports Illustrated.

According to the magazine, the award “celebrates individuals whose dedication to the ideals of sportsmanship has spanned decades and whose career in athletics has directly or indirectly impacted the world.”

Nicklaus appeared on the Sports Illustrated cover 22 times more than any golfer, including Tiger Woods.

“Every honor Jack receives is well deserved,” Woods wrote on his website. “This one, that recognizes the ideals of sportsmanship, leadership and philanthropy as tools for changing the world, is pretty special.”

Less than a month later, Nicklaus was one of the recipients of the 2016 Great Ohioans Award, along with industrialist and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller and U.S. Supreme Court justice Potter Stewart.

This award, given by the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board, commemorates Ohioans who have played a significant role in an event or series of events of lasting significance in world, U.S. or Ohio history.

I hate this hole. It plays long right from the start because the uphill tee shot hurts a lot of guys. Most guys find themselves short left or maybe in that first bunker. If you’re in that first bunker, you’re raking that second bunker. They almost always top it into that second bunker. It’s my biggest fear, I hate that. Most amateurs are 300-plus (yards) out, so I tell them to give it all they’ve got or lay up to their desired yardage. Then, they don’t. The thickest rough on the course is down the right side of this hole. And this is one of the hardest greens to read.

I’ve seen a lot of putts go the exact opposite of where I told them to hit it because there are so many different ridges. Also, we become tour guides on this hole because (Ohio State football coach) Urban Meyer’s house overlooks this green.

When golf actually did take place, Baptist was on the front lines covering the game’s greats, including the two golfers who will forever be debated as the best of all time – Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

Baptist’s golf beat duties included covering all things Nicklaus, who in the late ’70s was still in his prime. The Nicklaus beat used to be reserved for Paul Hornung, who was a writer and sports editor at The Dispatch for 43 years.

“Jack grew up with Paul covering him,” Baptist said.

“I was the new guy and I didn’t do my business the same way Paul did. It took a little getting used to. I pissed off Jack from time-to-time throughout the years, but never to the point he wouldn’t talk to me.

“If you have to ask Jack an uncomfortable question, it won’t be an easy interview.

He’ll go back and forth with

you, so you better know your subject and stand your ground.

He’ll give you his honest opinion. Jack is still the best interview in golf, even now.”

Nicklaus won the Memorial twice, in 1977 and 1984.

Fifteen years later, Woods arrived on the scene and won the first of his record five Memorials, ushering in a new era for golf.

“Tiger was unlike anything,” Baptist said. “Covering Tiger was like covering Super Bowl Media Day, where they allow in all the crackpots with crazy questions. Most of them didn’t know how to cover golf.”

In the year after Woods’ first Memorial victory, Baptist was assigned to write a story on the defending champion. Woods called Baptist that spring and the two spent 30 minutes chatting on the phone.

Woods would go on to defend his title at the Memorial that year before achieving the “Tiger Slam” by winning the U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship in 2000 and the Masters in 2001.

“I called (Woods’ agency) IMG in the spring of 2001 for another interview,” Baptist said. “They told me, ‘Uh, well, he’s not doing that this year.’

It was fine (laughing).”

On April 15, 2015, Baptist officially was done dodging raindrops and interviewing

golfers, but he still is involved with the Memorial Tournament. He is a panel member of fellow golf journalists tasked to choose an annual recipient of the Memorial Golf Journalism Award.

He also works with the Memorial’s director of communications, Tom Sprouse, on selecting the Memorial Tournament scholarship winners in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University.

“Bob and I shut down the media center so many times over the years,” Sprouse said.

“He was one of the hardest working guys. But now I’ve got to know him on another level, and he’s a great guy allaround.”

Baptist also offers his handyman skills by helping the less fortunate on the east side of Columbus repair their homes, and he spends two weeks in the summer in Kentucky building a house.

As for golf? He hasn’t played in almost three years.

It was the day before his son got married.

“People always tell me they can’t believe I don’t play more golf because I write like a four handicap,” Baptist said.

Par 3, 185 yards 2015 Memorial rank: Ninth toughest There is water on 14 of the 18 holes out there. This is one that doesn’t have water, but it’s surrounded by bunkers. The only time you’re OK if you’re in a bunker is if you hit it left in between the two bunkers there.

That’s the best place you can be if you’re not on the green. It is a downhill tee shot, but people take downhill too much into it. Don’t take 10 yards off. If anything, take 5. You’re better to miss long than short. Those short bunkers are deep. The fatter part of the green is in the back and almost everything slopes right to left. Nine times out of 10, I tell them yardage that is a bit long because I don’t want them in that front bunker.

Jack Nicklaus’ house is on the left of the tee box here, as is his guest house, which is bigger than my house. Your above average player doesn’t need to hit driver, but you want to aim left center, right at the clock tower on the clubhouse. There are a lot of water balls on this hole and a lot of drops and more water balls.

That creek by the green is only 5 yards wide, but guys try and baby it onto the green. There are some cool putts on that hole, but if you’re above the hole, it’s a tough putt. Everything breaks toward the water. Also, the way Nicklaus designed this course on some of the holes, the elevation changes make it seem longer than it actually is, and that is evident on this hole.

This is one of the most intimidating holes for most amateurs.

It plays so long because it is so far uphill. Visually, standing on the tee, it looks like a far poke, but it’s really just 209 yards from the back of the tee box to the tree on the right. Yet, none of the amateurs ever make it. I have seen Bubba Watson cut it over the trees on the right and have 175 in.

But even for the pros, it’s a tough par 4 because it plays so long and it is usually into the wind. The green has a severe slope with a false front and is sloped back to front. If you’re putting across the green, you typically have to compensate 3 to 4 feet outside the hole. You don’t want to putt back toward a front pin. Good chance it’ll end up off the green. I’ve also seen multiple guys chip from the front of the green and the ball ends up farther than where they’re standing.

This is a great golf hole. There is a flower bed off the tee I tell a lot of people to aim at, and it’s just left of that fairway bunker on the right. The second fairway is easy. It’s wide and everything helps you for your approach shot.

You’ve got to go into the hole with the mindset (that) it’s a three-shot hole. If you do, you’ll do well.

If you try and be aggressive and you’re not a good player, you can have a huge number here. On the approach, anything right or above the hole is bad. I’ve had a guy putt it into the water from the back of the green. During a pro-am three years ago, Ben Curtis putted from just in front of the left bunker toward the back of the green, the ball stopped, then rolled back into the water. It’s stupid fast.

It is simply an awesome hole.

Almost everyone recognizes it as looking like No. 12 at Augusta National. The front bunker on this hole is not a bad place to be.

Back bunker or the hill behind the green is death. Even if the flag is in the back-right Sunday pin position, I put them toward the center or center left of the green. It’s the easiest place to putt it close from there. The winds can swirl back there and it can change from one player to another. You’ve got to play it close to the number. This is where I’ve seen the most water balls.

I’ve seen all four in a group hit it into the water and I’ve also seen all four hit to within 15 feet. It’s an accessible hole. It’s not the longest hole, but it is the most intimidating.

At approximately 1 p.m. Sunday, Jack Nicklaus and PGA Tour executive director of tournament administration David Eger inspected the course and deemed 10 of the 18 holes to be unplayable. According to Eger, the PGA Tour favored canceling the final round rather than moving it to Monday.

Sutton finished his four-day onslaught with one eagle and 23 birdies and posted all four rounds under 70 to finish with a tournament-record 17-underpar 271, four strokes ahead of runner-up Don Pooley.

“I don’t think that record (Sutton’s 271) will be broken for a long time,” Nicklaus said. “I just don’t think you’re going to have four days (of scoring conditions) like that again for a long time.”

The tournament field also set records with 1,241 birdies (previous record: 1,022), 80 rounds under 70 (previous record: 36), 161 players under par (previous record: 102) and 211 players finishing par or better (previous record: 154). Also, 13 players finished under the previous four-round record of 280.

Irwin hovered around 70 for all four rounds (71-71-70-69), finishing first at 7-under-par 281, one stroke ahead of David Graham and Ben Crenshaw, who tied for second.

“Even since the (1976) loss, I’ve wanted to win this tournament,” Irwin said.

Irwin was the first player to play all four rounds at Muirfield Village under par and came within one shot of Graham’s tournament-record 280. Irwin entered the final round at 4under-par, four shots back of leader Graham and in a six-way tie for sixth. Graham and Crenshaw missed birdie putts from 25 feet on No. 18 that would have forced a playoff.

1982

“I just can’t play your course,” Floyd said he would tell Nicklaus.

With scores of 67 and 71 in the final two rounds, Floyd was able to conquer a personal frustration. He finished first at 7under-par 281, two strokes ahead of Wayne Levi, Peter Jacobsen, Gil Morgan and Roger Maltbie, who tied for second at 283.

Floyd made up eight shots on the leaders during the third round, including Maltbie, who was seeking his second Memorial victory. Maltbie shot a 68 on the first day and a 66 on the second to set a 36-hole record of 10-under 134. He faltered in the final two rounds, however, shooting a 75 and 74.

1981

Champion: Keith Fergus, 284 (-4) Honoree: Harry Vardon Recap: After four and a half years on the PGA Tour, Fergus finally won his first tournament.

In the final round, Fergus took the lead over Jack Renner with a birdie at No. 12. He maintained a one-stroke lead entering the 72nd hole.

On No. 18, Fergus’ drive landed in a fairway bunker on the right side of the green. Renner hit his drive into the same bunker. Renner was away and had a better lie, and he hit his 4-iron onto the green, 35 feet from the hole. Fergus shot a 6iron 155 yards onto the green, 30 feet from the hole. So, wait, is it the Big Five?

Six? Where does it stop? The fact that there is a debate helps prove Nicklaus’ statement.

The idea of a Big Three began in the 1960s, when it was given to the triumvirate of Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player, who won a combined 17 majors during that decade.

Meanwhile, Woods’ last major victory came at the 2008 U.S. Open.

“I think it’s going to be awhile before, or if ever, we see dominance like we saw from Tiger Woods,” Scott said during his pre-Masters press conference. “The game’s changed even in the last six or seven years since Tiger won his last major championship in lots of different ways.

“The way I see it, it’s just the combined evolution of the game. Professional golf is in such a good spot at the moment, especially with guys like Jason and Jordan and Rory at the top of the world. They are great ambassadors of golf, incredible talents and pushing the bar even higher in the game for me to try and keep up with them.”

The hole is definitely set up by the drive. You can’t think about going for the green unless you’re decent off the tee. From the tournament tees, it is 304 yards to carry that left fairway bunker. The pros usually play short and right. The approach is one of the easiest on the course because you can feed it in.

Everything runs right to left in a back pin. Unless flag is way forward, I give them yardage to the front of the green because it slopes to the back.

2015 Memorial rank: Ninth easiest This is one of the best golf holes out there, not just at Muirfield Village, but anywhere.

You have guys that want to go for it and they put it in the water or on the hill on the left. It does you no good. It leaves you with a weird 60-yard pitch and that angle sucks. Not much riskreward by doing that. It’s more just ‘watch me hit it over the creek.’ Normally, I tell someone 220 out to the right. No more than 230. Second shot is great to a thin green that is like a sliver of bacon. If the flag is in the front, it is not a tough shot. If the flag is in the back, you have to land it in a 20-feet-by-20-feet square. Not many people can hit that shot, especially amateurs.

Caddy Killer. This is the one shot that brings houses into play. People think about that, too. It is an intimidating look, but it isn’t a hard hole. It is a three-shot hole for 90 percent of the players. The pros will hit irons off the tee. Just like the rest of Muirfield Village, if you manage your game well, it’s not a tough course. If you’re above the ridge on your drive, you have 225 (yards) to the green. Do you want to go for it or do you want to score? I talk most people out of going for it. On your approach, you want to aim for the middle of the green all day here. There is a little false front and, if the pin is front and you’re above the hole, it is just a miserable putt. I’ve seen players putt it off the green and your line can be hitting it 12 inches for a 10- to 15-foot putt.

Charlie Nicklaus joined Scioto Country Club in 1950. He was recovering from an ankle injury suffered while playing volleyball. Jack’s first role was to caddie for his dad during tedious rounds.

“He couldn’t make a game because he couldn’t walk that long,” Jack Nicklaus told the Associated Press in 2012. “He’d play one hole, we’d stop, and I’d chip and putt and fool around. I was a 10-year-old kid who didn’t know anything. But my dad introduced me to everything.

He finally said, ‘Hey, would you like to learn how to play golf?’ I said, ‘Sure.’ So he started me off.”

Jack Nicklaus began taking lessons from Scioto’s pro, Jack Grout, and carded a 51 on his first nine holes at Scioto.

“We have some photos of Jack working on his game there,” Trostel said. “It’s remarkable. Scioto is a backdrop for one of our cases in our Jack Nicklaus room at the museum because the course has been so influential in his life.”

It feels like at the end of “Shawshank Redemption” and you’re Andy Dufresne crawling out of the sewer pipe. This hole features the newest green on the course and, because of that, it is the hardest and firmest green. It is a tough hole. Most of the pros hate this hole because of the wind direction. Normally, it’s downwind and the angle of the green makes it really tough to hold your tee shots. Everyone thinks there is a large amount of break on this green, but it doesn’t. The only tricky part is the front third of the green because of a little knoll. You can give a player a line and it’ll miss by an inch or it’ll go in an opposite direction. The back part of the green breaks toward the water, but not everything breaks toward the water. It’s a tough green to read.

This is a tough driving hole.

If you can get it smack in the middle of the fairway bunkers, that is the best spot to be. The front left bunker is never in play.

It shouldn’t be, at least. Even if you hit a good drive here, though, you still have a deadly approach.

The creek near the green doesn’t find many balls, but the tree on the left does. There isn’t really an easy approach to or putt on this hole. It is a two-tiered green with a big slope in the middle of it.

I’ve seen guys hit great shots that run through that green. Putting down that hill toward the front is tough. This is a fun green to read putts on because some putts really snap. I’ve seen players on the bottom tier putt uphill and the ball comes back around and back toward them.

This is the course’s crowning jewel.

Once you turn that corner in the middle of the fairway, it is a great view. You’re taking a lot of photos in the middle of the 18 fairway. This past year, they took out bunkers on the right. There used to be nine bunkers up that right-hand side, now just three are left. It was a good idea because those bunkers were just collecting shots and you were going from bunker to bunker. It was pointless. It’s a tough approach because there is a big Average score: 4.241 false front. If you’re short, it’s coming Eagles: 0 back toward you. This is a tough green, Birdies: 46 too. There is a lot of slope and a twoPars: 226 tiered green. It’s pretty severely sloped Bogeys: 83 back to front. If the pin is anywhere on Double bogeys: 24 the right and they’re back left, they have Triple bogeys +: 2 no chance getting it anywhere within 15 feet. I’ve seen a guy in that collection area in the front with his second shot hit one up and it came back toward him. He hit another back up past the pin. His putt went by the hole back into the fairway. He said “I’m done” and walked off. “Well, thanks for coming, hope you had a good time!”
