Constant tweaks help make event special

The Memorial Tournament has entered its fourth decade, as 2015 marks the 40th playing of what is affectionately known as “Jack’s tournament.”

“Jack,” of course, refers to 75-year-old Jack Nicklaus, the central Ohio-born professional golfer who owns a record 18 major championships.

The idea of the Memorial started at the 1966 Masters Tournament. Nicklaus told reporters he’d like to host a

tournament in central Ohio that honored the history and tradition of golf and gave back to the community in form of charity. By 1976, Muirfield Village Golf Club was built and it was hosting its first PGA Tour event, which was won by Roger Maltbie in a playoff over Hale Irwin.

The vision Nicklaus first described in the mid-1960s has not only took shape, but also thrived. Today, the Memorial is one of the highlights on the PGA Tour’s season schedule, as evident by the perennial

strong field it attracts. The tour itself also took notice last year by passing a resolution giving winners of the Memorial and Bay Hill Invitational, Arnold Palmer’s event, a three-year exemption, instead of typical two-year exemptions given by winning other events on tour.

Former caddy provides insight

ThisWeek reached out to a former veteran caddy at Muirfield Village, who agreed to discuss each hole, albeit with anonymity.

The hole descriptions start on page 4 and continue throughout this Memorial Tournament preview section.

“I always told my golfers that this is a second-shot course, so it’s much better if you can get yourself comfortable off the tee,” our caddy said. “If you get in jail from your tee shot, you’re done and that goes for all 18 holes out here.”

PGA Tour caddies have the best vantage point to watch the world’s greatest golfers.

If a caddy is carrying the clubs of the world’s elite, they’re also compensated handsomely.

And then you have the caddies who work at private clubs. Sure, their office is comprised of the fairways and greens of some of the country’s top golf courses, including Muirfield Village Golf Club, but there is a trade off.

“You see guys come out there thinking they’re good players and then shoot a 95. I’ve seen a lot of terrible golf.”

Caddies seeking payment for promotional look

Caddies at the Memorial Tournament experience a different kind of week in central Ohio.

At a typical PGA Tour stop, the professional loopers don bibs that display the logo of the main sponsor for that week’s tournament.

Not at the Memorial.

Akin to the full white coveralls the caddies wear at Augusta National Golf Club during The Masters Tournament, caddies at the Memorial wear white jackets with their golfer’s name on the back and the tournament emblem on the front.

It’s a welcomed reprieve because caddies are sick and tired of being walking billboards.

On Feb. 3, 80 professional caddies filed a multi-million dollar federal lawsuit against the PGA Tour arguing the Tour unlawfully forces caddies to wear logos of a tournament’s corporate sponsor on their bibs. On March 17, the original complaint was amended and now includes 167 caddies. According to the lawsuit, “the value of the bibs is approximately $50 million annually. Caddies receive none

Almost two months after the suit was filed, Kenny Harms, a caddie for 26 years and the last eight with 2014 Memorial Tournament runner-up Kevin Na, took to Golf.com to explain why he is one of the lead plaintiffs.

“I’ve made a decent living, but some of my colleagues are struggling,” he wrote. “Our expenses are larger than ever.

Players might be flying in private jets and staying in free hotel suites, but we’re hitching rides and sharing rooms.

Most of us can’t afford health care or retirement accounts.”

offer. The PGA Tour can still use corporate sponsors on the bib if the Tour puts $10,000 aside for each year for a caddy’s health care and $10,000 for his or her retirement.

“For 200 caddies that would have been $4 million per year,” Harms wrote.

According to Harms, the tour did not accept the offer.

Meanwhile, it is tour policy to not comment on ongoing litigation.

40 Ways to Define the Memorial

List offers unique look at ‘Jack’s tournament’

Solomon, a 2004 graduate of Dublin Scioto High School, grew up in Muirfield Village.

Since the ’90s, he would spend every day at the course during the week of the Memorial Tournament.

“When I got out of class on Wednesdays when I was younger, the most important thing to me was getting autographs,” Solomon said.

In 1999, the 12-year-old Solomon followed Woods during a practice round trying to land that coveted signature.

Numerous attempts on the front nine failed, so he jumped ahead to wait between the No. 10 green and No. 11 tee.

As Woods made his way to the tee box, Solomon, standing at the front of the rope line, readied his blue Sharpie pen, but the throng of fans began to push forward.

“My arms got stuck out and I could feel Tiger’s shoulder rub up against my hand,” Solomon said. “I lost my hat in the fray. It was just mayhem.”

Woods passed and, when

the crowd eased up, Solomon left to meet his friends behind the 11th green.

“Did you get it?” his friends asked.

“No, I couldn’t get it and I lost my hat,” Solomon said. “I think I wrote on his shirt, though. I felt his shoulder brush up against my hand.”

When Woods made it to the 11th green, Solomon and his friends could clearly see a blue Sharpie streak running from the buttons on the golfer’s shirt to his left shoulder.

“Sure enough, on the news that night, they showed a video of Tiger picking his ball up from the hole and you could see clear as day the mark across his chest,” Solomon said. “He has my autograph, but I never did get his.”

Solomon now works as an auditor for KPMG and is currently in an 18-month rotation in Amsterdam. Within the golf world – fans, media, caddies and players alike – he’s known for his popular golf blog and Twitter account @NoLayingUp. After years of attending the Memorial as a fan, Solomon said he was granted a media pass to cover the Memorial

Tournament last season.

“We started the Twitter account when we were bored,” said Solomon, whose college friends also regularly contribute to the site.

This is the first time Solomon will miss the Memorial.

“This is the tournament I know the best,” Solomon said.

“I never had a full appreciation of how good the Memorial was until I went to other tournaments. The way they treat the players and the fans and the convenience of everything was unlike anything I experienced at any other tournament. You don’t appreciate it until you get away from it for a while.”

Because of how it goes about its business, the Memorial has become an annual highlight on the PGA Tour since the tournament’s inception in 1976.

The Memorial also is a key event on central Ohio’s sporting calendar. While most everybody who lives in or around Columbus has attended the tournament at least once, a large contingent of attendees, errr, excuse me Mr. Nicklaus, patrons aren’t even golfers or golf fans.

more than just four rounds of golf. It’s also about things such as obtaining autographs or, in Solomon’s case, not so much.

So, to mark the 40th Memorial, here are 40 things – some golf, some not – that define the week of “Jack’s tournament.”

Inappropriate shoes: – Fashion is not going to get in the way of comfort for some female golf fans. You see it every year as you walk among the fairways at Muirfield Village Golf Club. And, boy, do you walk. As you shuffle

through the crowds on the cart paths and rough in your tennis shoes, it’s inevitable to see a woman struggling to maneuver the terrain in a pair of Christian Louboutin pumps.

The footware choice of men is just as curious. Sure, men probably are living vicariously through Jordan Spieth and Bubba Watson, but to the fella in the Foot Joys, “Hey, bud, why the golf shoes?” I’m sure your sticks are in the trunk of your car, too, but tournament officials aren’t going to spy those spikes and ask you to fill in for Phil Mickelson, who just

withdrew (again).

With the traps on the right, I always tell people to take driver and aim for the right side, just left of the bunkers to give yourself an angle into the green. A lot of pros will hit 3-wood, but amateurs have to go driver. If you’re even with the bunkers, you have about 160 yards in. If the pin is in the back right, that’s always the place to aim. It’s the flattest part of the green. There is a semi-false front if you hit it short.

A lot of golfers make the mistake here thinking they have to hit driver; they don’t. A 3-wood or even a hybrid works. You want to aim down the left center of the fairway to put yourself in position to have a good angle into the green on your second shot. The green is surrounded two big bunkers and water.

You can get yourself in jail if you go too far on the right side. If you pull your driver, you’re in the woods on the left.

Nick Faldo first crossed paths with Jack Nicklaus in 1973.

Faldo attended the 1973 Open Championship at Troon as a fan. His favorite spot was to stand behind the range and watch the pros hit ball after ball. Faldo was watching the world’s best when nature called.

“At the back of the hotel there was the British version of a porta john,” Faldo said. “Right then Jack jumps over the fence either to avoid the fans or get to the range quicker. I just stood there and said, ‘Hi.’” Nicklaus wasn’t in a conversational mood, as he entered the portable facility to, as Faldo says in his still thick British accent, “spend a penny.”

“After he left, I went in there and widdled all around to make sure I widdled in the same spot as Jack.”

More than four decades later, the two will be joined at the hip at the 40th Memorial Tournament. Faldo is this year’s honoree and 62nd overall.

Faldo credits his interest in golf to watching Nicklaus win the 1971 Masters Tournament on television. Four years later, he won the English Amateur and British Youths Championships and in 1976 he turned

“That man inspired me through TV in 1971, and I made a career out of it,” Faldo said. “Here I am two light years later being a recipient of Jack’s Memorial Tournament honoree award. It is very special.”

From 1987 and 1996, Faldo won three Open Championships (1987, 1990 and 1992) and three Masters Tournaments (1989, 1990 and 1996). He just missed out on the career grand

slam after finishing second in the 1988 U.S. Open and tied for second at the 1992 PGA Championship.

Faldo, who is fifth all-time with 30 wins on the European Tour, became only the second person to defend a title at The Masters after winning in 1989 and 1990. Faldo matched Nicklaus’ feat of consecutive victories in 1965 and 1966.

“To equal one of Jack’s records is pretty cool,” said

Faldo, who appeared in seven Memorial Tournaments, with his best finish coming in 1995 when he tied for 13th.

Faldo, 57, is a 2009 World Golf Hall of Fame inductee and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth that same year.

Today, Faldo is the lead analyst for CBS Sports and the Golf Channel.

From the tee, it’s 280 yards to get to that back bunker. Most amateurs will think automatically that they have to hit an iron. If you hit something 260, you’ve put yourself in a good position to the green and so you’re around that bend. The pros can pound it so they hit something less. Regardless, you have to get past that bend or else you have to lay up or hit a hero shot around trees on the left side and over water.

They usually keep the rough high on the right side, too, so you can’t bail out there.

This hole is all about the slope of the green. It is a severe slope right-to-left. Also, whatever yardage this hole is playing, you have to club down. The goal on this hole is to hit your tee shot and have it land on the front right of the green and filter down to the left.

Sifford’s exclusion as honoree needs to change for 2016 Golf lost a great ambassador in 2015.

Charlie Sifford died Feb. 3 at 92 years old.

As a professional golfer, he never won a major; he only won twice on the PGA Tour; he wasn't a household name among golf fans; and he sort of blended in after settling down in Brecksville, a suburb of Cleveland.

Yet Sifford’s name will never be forgotten as a pioneer in the game of golf.

Unfortunately, as central Ohio celebrates the 40th playing of the Memorial Tournament, Sifford is not among the 62 Memorial Tournament honorees.

“The Memorial Tournament is themed each year around a person, living or dead, who has contributed to the game of golf,” as it reads atop the Honorees page on TheMemorialTournament.com.

“This was Jack Nicklaus’ idea as a contribution to perpetuating achievements of the game’s great-

est individuals.”

Annually, the honoree for the following year is announced during tournament’s final round.

Sir Nick Faldo, DON a six-time major DELCO championship winner, is this year’s honoree and joins a prestigious list that includes giants in the game of golf. In the past five years, the honorees have been Seve Ballesteros (2010), Nancy Lopez (2011), Tom Watson (2012), Raymond Floyd (2013) and Annika Sorenstam (2014).

“The honoree is selected by the Captains Club,” the website states.

“A group of statesmen who act independently of the tournament organization, but who also advise on player invitations and the conduct of the event generally.”

The site lists members of the Captains Club. It is comprised of well-

known names like President George H.W. Bush, Sean Connery, Barbara Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Tom Watson.

Anyone and everyone who has contributed achievements to golf are selected to be honorees by the Captains Club.

Sifford surely belongs.

Sifford is a 2004 World Golf Hall of Fame inductee. His first official year on the PGA Tour was 1961, making him as the first AfricanAmerican to join the Tour.

By then, Sifford’s best playing days were behind him. He won the United Golf Association’s National Negro Open six times including consecutively from 1952-56.

Excluding the PGA Tour and Champions Tour, he had 19 professional wins.

Sifford began golfing professionally in 1948, but back then he was excluded from the Professional Golfers’ Association.

After Sifford joined the PGA Tour full time, his two wins came in 1967

at the Greater Hartford Open and in 1969 at the Los Angeles Open. His best finish in a major was a tie for 21st at the 1972 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach won by Nicklaus.

That isn’t Sifford’s only connection to Nicklaus.

“I first met Charlie when I was just 18 years old and playing in my first PGA Tour event,” said Nicklaus, on his website Nicklaus.com the day after Sifford died. “Charlie and I were grouped together the first two rounds, and we hit it off from the first tee and remained good friends ever since.

“He helped pave the way for so many in the game of golf … He was a leader and in inspiration.”

Three of the 24 athletes who have received the Presidential Medal of Freedom are golfers – Nicklaus, Palmer and Sifford. The medal is awarded by the president of the United States “for especially meritorious contribution to … (3) cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”

Sifford received his medal Nov. 24, 2014, from President Obama less than three months before he died.

Fourteen days earlier, Tiger Woods took to Twitter to congratulate Sifford.

“You’re the grandpa I never had,” Woods wrote. “Your past sacrifices allow me to play golf today. I'm so happy for you Charlie.”

When Sifford was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame 11 years ago, Nicklaus was quoted as saying, “It’s about time.”

A lot of the amateurs will hit a 3- or 5-wood to get their tee shot right in front of that creek. It’s about 220 yards, and that’s a 4- or 5-iron for the pros.

Then again, I’ve seen Bubba (Watson) hit driver over all those trees and land it in the second fairway. In fact, he does that every round. He’s also a little more aggressive. This is an easy scoring hole for the pros even if they play it as a three-shot par-5. The green is two-tiered so it’s not too bad. You can also bail out right if the pin is up front near the water. There is a nice little apron to hit it on, bump it up toward the hole and tap in a birdie.

Especially for the pros, they’re not going to take driver here and instead probably hit a 3-wood. Usually, I tell my golfers to aim down the left center so you can stay away from that fairway bunker on the right. This green slopes severely back-to-front so you’ll want to play your approach longer to try and suck it back toward the hole. If the pin is located in the far left, you don’t want to be putting from the right side. It can actually roll off the green. I’ve seen a couple of players do just that.

Most pros will hit driver over that lefthand bunker. Jack (Nicklaus) has tried to lengthen that bunker so they’d stop doing it, but they’re still doing it. From there, the pros will have 210-220 yards in. Regardless, you’ll want to stay away from the entire right side on this hole.

That is some of the thickest rough on the course there. If you’re going to miss, miss left. As for the green, there is a big bowl in the front, and you don’t want to hit it there. The back right is relatively flat so you can bump it up, but you can’t go long because of that back bunker.

When standing on the tee, this hole seems like it’s downhill. A lot of players make that mistake and club down. This hole plays true to the distance. The biggest key here is just getting on the green. It is two-tiered, front-to-back, and it just depends on where the pin is. If it’s on the front, you don’t want to be long. If it’s in the back and you’re going to miss, you want to be on the left-hand side there. The right-side bunker is more brutal.

Lehman’s flu-riddled record-setting score – The record still stands today. In 1994, Tom Lehman won the Memorial with a four-day total of 268, or 20-under par. Azinger’s hole-out in 1993 – It is perhaps the most iconic shot in the history of the Memorial. Tied with good friend and playing partner Payne Stewart entering the 72nd hole, Paul Azinger holed out from a greenside bunker for a birdie while Stewart finished with a bogey.

The Wednesday Pro-Am – Annoyed pros, well-to-do businessmen and women playing bad golf. This has it all. The tour pros aren’t big fans of this exercise, but they are mandated to participate. The Pro-Am offers a chance, like a practice round, to interact with some pros in a very relaxed setting and walk the course without battling

I always tell players to take 3-wood off the tee. If you hit driver, you run the risk of running through the fairway on the left side.

That approach shot really plays a club up no matter what the wind is doing. It looks downhill, but it’s actually a long carry because you’re coming through an open alley. The green is sloped toward the back right bunker and can be quick.

They usually keep the pin on the left side or front of the green.

This is the longest par 4 at Muirfield Village. You have to smash your driver and don’t go left into those fairway bunkers. If you are in it, you can only get out with a pitching wedge. If you have to miss, miss right, but don’t get caught up in the big tree there. You’ll still have about 200 yards on your approach. The green is big so there is room to carry that big front bunker. The back of the green has a big mound that slopes right-to-left and there is a big false front as well.

I always tell golfers to hit driver and the pros hit 3-wood off that tee. You want to be just left of those fairway bunkers on the right side and give yourself an angle into the green. From that gap, you are about 230-240 yards to the green. If you’re in the left-hand side of the fairway you can go for it, but most players still lay up. It’s a bear of a green because it slopes back-to-front severely.

I’ve seen more guys putt off the green there if you’re in the back of the green and the pin is front right.

This is a two-tiered green from left-to-right. You want to try and be on the side where the pin is, and on Sunday for the tournament they tuck it far right. If you want to miss when the pin is there, it’ll be short and into that bunker. You can’t go long. This hole also usually plays true to its distance even though it looks like a downhill shot.

Woods took two months off before returning at Augusta National, where he made the cut and tied for 17th.

“As I’ve said many times,” Nicklaus said, “he’ll be fine.”

Woods’ physical battles dropped him to 133rd in the Official World Golf Rankings after finishing tied for 69th at The Players Championship on May 10.

Meanwhile, the world’s top two golfers are expected to be in central Ohio. Rory McIlroy, the world No. 1, won the Wells Fargo Championship on May 17 thanks, in part, to a course record 61 in the third round.

Jordan Spieth, the world No. 2, became the second-youngest player to win The Masters.

Spieth, 21, won the green jacket by four shots over major champions Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose last April.

“If we can get these guys playing together as much as possible and playing well, that’d be pretty cool,” said Sir Nick Faldo, who is the 2015 Memorial Tournament honoree. “We’ve had a dozen of the top guys in the world playing well going into the Masters. If we can keep doing that for the next four to five years, golf will be very cool.”

Also expected to compete among the top players in the world are Henrik Stenson (No. 3), Bubba Watson (No. 4), Jim Furyk (No. 5), Justin Rose (No. 6), Jason Day (No. 8), Rickie Fowler (No. 9), Dustin Johnson (No. 10), Adam Scott (No. 11), defending champion Hideki Matsuyama (No. 14) and Mickelson (No. 18).

A lot of pros will push it right, and you have a grove of trees there. You’re dead.

The big thing is the approach is very downhill. I always tell players to take a club down and hit just before the green and allow the ball to filter down toward the left side of the green.

Despite the glowing reviews, Nicklaus is known for the constant tweaks he makes to the event, facilities and, most importantly, the course.

“The golf course is easier in some ways and tougher in some ways,” Nicklaus said.

“There are a lot more pin placements and a lot more length. The fairways have gotten a lot narrower because the golf ball goes straighter.

You just keep adjusting to the times and keep yourself relevant to what’s going on in the game.”

This year is no different, as he’s continued his adjustment to No. 18. For the Presidents Cup in 2013, Nicklaus increased the par-4 from 444 to 484 yards, which now forced the pros to hit a driver off the tee. At last year’s tournament, the 18th was the toughest hole with an average score of 4.338.

“Once I put in that back tee, I didn’t need those other bunkers,” said Nicklaus, referring to the group of 10 bunkers that cornered the right side of the dogleg. “I looked and took out seven bunkers and left the three most of the pros hit into last year. It looks better on TV, it’s better for the spectators and a lot easier to maintain.”

Forty years later, Nicklaus is not content with the Memorial.

“We’ve just started,” he said. “We’re still growing and try to do the same things that work but do them better, but also work to move it farther forward.”

“It seems like only yesterday we were talking about this place, what to do, what kind of golf course to build, how to structure the tournament, how we see it grow and what kind of support we could get. I’m very happy and very trilled for the city of Columbus and central Ohio how things happened and how places like Nationwide Children’s Hospital have benefited. It has been very neat.”

A lot of players will hit a 5- or 6-iron off the tee. I usually tell my players to hit something 220 yards. It’s about 240 yards to get to the creek on your tee shot. The approach shot will always need to hit on the left side and filter down to the right. Be careful of the greenside bunkers on the left. It’s death. That is the worst place you can be on this golf course.

If you can put your drive on the top of that hill, that’s the best place to be. You have to pipe it about 280 yards to get to the top and have a good look at it. A lot of guys are just before that hill and have a blind shot and 260 yards in. Off the tee you can go right, and left is dead because it’ll go down in that valley. If you’re going to miss, it’s going to be right. Although, in 2014 I’ve never seen anyone hit it that far right as Bubba (Watson) did. He was over the fence and in a backyard. A lot of pros will go for this green in two because you can’t get in too much trouble unless you are really far left by the green. It slopes back-to-front so you’ll want to hit your approach toward the right-hand side and let it filter down to the left.

Casper held his own thanks to a terrific short game and putting stroke. Johnny Miller has said Casper “has the greatest pair of hands God ever gave a human being.”

Casper also shined in the Ryder Cup. He was an eight-time member and won more points, 23.5, than any other American player.

He was the PGA Tour Player of the Year in 1966 and 1970. Five times, he won the Vardon Trophy, which is given to the PGA Tour player with the lowest scoring average for the season.

Casper was the Memorial Tournament honoree in 1996.

•REMAINING MAJORS – The season’s second major, the U.S. Open, will take place June 18-21 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash. It is the first time the USGA championship will be held in the Pacific Northwest.

The Open Championship returns July 1619 to the Old Course at St. Andrews for the first time since 2010.

Finally, the PGA Championship also returns Aug. 13-16 to a familiar course, Whistling Straits. German Martin Kaymer, who is the defending U.S. Open champion, won the PGA Championship at the Kohler, Wis., course in 2010.

However, PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem was asked about the lawsuit on Feb. 4 before the start of the Farmers Insurance Open.

“Most people don’t understand the way the caddy/player relationship works,” Finchem said. “A player is an individual, an independent contractor. He doesn’t have an HR department. He makes an arrangement with somebody that’s going to carry the bag and work with him. They work out a financial arrangement. Those arrangements are all over the map.

“We think it’s a good system. We would like to continue that system. We just have to wait and see what happens with this litigation.”

•THE BIG FOUR – On Feb. 7, the PGA Tour lost one of its greatest players in Billy Casper. He died at 83.

Casper won 51 times on the PGA Tour, which places him seventh behind Sam Snead, Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Arnold Palmer. Casper also won three major championships: the 1959 and 1966 U.S. Open and the 1970 Masters. He finished runner-up at the PGA Championship three times.

What makes his victories even more impressive is that they came during the primes of Nicklaus, Palmer and Gary Player, who were known as “the big three.” Combined, that trio won 159 times spanning the mid-1950s to the ddelco@dispatch.com

The thing with that hole is a lot of times you’ll roll off the green if there’s a back pin. I remember the first year of that redesigned hole (2010) guys were trying to hit and stop it in the back pin and they bailed out into the back right bunker. It’s weird, but pros will prefer to hit bunker shots rather than hit long putts.

Most players hit driver down the middle. You don’t want to go left or right because there are fairway bunkers. You don’t want to be there. If you can pipe one far enough down the fairway, it’ll roll down the hill and leave you about 120 yards in. A lot of pros place it just in front of either fairway bunker and have 180 yards in. That green is two-tiered, and it slopes back to front. On that hole you can be a little longer if you want.

That second shot requires a club up. It’s an uphill shot so it’ll play longer.

Regardless, you want to get around that bend off the tee and you can’t go left.

There is a chance if you are too far left you’ll hit the fairway and roll into the water that runs down the left side. On your approach you can be short, but if it hits too short there is a false front and it’ll roll all the way back down into the fairway.
