event was organized by Jeanne Gogolski, Career Development/Service Learning Coordinator, and Stephen Lewis, a member of the high school’s business faculty.

Focus on Your Future was held at the Columbus Bar Association on Oct. 31, and close to 100 UAHS sophomores were in attendance. The morning began with a keynote presentation from Peter Danis, owner of Figlio Restaurants in Grandview and Upper Arlington. Peter used some key lessons learned from his experiences as a CPA, attorney and business owner, to share the following important message: follow your passion.

Don’t choose a career path based on someone else’s suggestion, find what you are truly interested in and then find a way to make a living at it.

The students also heard from District Superintendent Paul Imhoff, who applauded the students for being proactive about their future careers.

UA High School Entrepreneurial Program Understanding the legal and financial implications of each form of ownership help teams to deepen their understanding.

Students in the UAHS Entrepreneurship class continue to make progress in the development of their businesses, thanks to some help from the Chamber.

During the month of November, students had a chance to hear about some real-world experiences in the areas of business law and finance. On Nov. 1, Frank Schuckman, a business attorney with Chamber member Dinsmore and Shohl, explained the importance of legally forming a business entity and the different entity choices available. Frank related some of his own experiences advising business clients and helped each team consider the legal form that would be most appropriate for their ventures.

The next topic for the class to consider was accounting and financial projections, and again the students were able to get some real-world perspective. Kevin Fix, Managing Principal of Newhaven Capital Advisors, and Greg Zunkiewicz, Financial Advisor at Edward Jones Investments, both Chamber members,

visited the classroom on Nov. 18. After relating some stories about their experiences in the corporate world, Kevin and Greg engaged each team in a discussion of their business model, and discussed how they would prepare some realistic financial projections. “It’s great to see the development of the teams and their business plans,” said Greg Zunkiewicz.

“They all have some interesting ideas and there’s really a broad range of business types.” The teams are working hard to get ready for their formal business plan presentations in early January.

Chamber welcomes Brandon Oates Brandon Oates is the Director of Membership Development at the Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce. In this position, he focuses on recruitment, retention and expansion of membership involvement with the Chamber. Mr. Oates previously worked in the nonprofit sector in

Toledo, Ohio, where he served as the Program Director and a Development Officer.

In addition to his duties at UAACC, Mr. Oates also currently serves as a Mentor to student athletes at The Ohio State University.

Mr. Oates received his education from The University of Toledo in communications and nonprofit management.

He also received a minor in counseling, and is pas-

sionate about listening to and helping others.

While attending Toledo, Mr. Oates also served as a volunteer in the Foreign Mentorship Program where he taught international students English.

Additionally, Mr. Oates is passionate about the mission of UAACC, and the community of Upper Arlington.

He is excited to be a part of such a great organization, and community.
