but it’s not toxic. Oxygen bleach is the preferred bleach to use for cleaning your home, both on the exterior and interior, because it will not harm you, your pets or your plants. Oxygen bleach also will not take the color out of your wood decking, your vinyl siding, your painted surfaces, or your roof. Chlorine bleach, on the other hand, is highly toxic to plants, humans and animals. It’s so powerful that it will remove the color from wood decking, and it can discolor painted exterior surfaces much like it takes out the color from fabrics. You can easily find oxygen bleach online or at many stores. Typically, it is a powder you mix with water. Once the powder is mixed with water, all you get is more water, oxygen ions that do the cleaning, and some harmless organic soda ash. Not all oxygen bleaches are the Please see OXYGEN, pg. 4

Lighting sets the tone, focuses attention in a home ant to improve your mood, productivity and general well-being? Consider turning on a light. The psychological effects of lighting have long been a subject of study. It has been documented that the intensity and quality of light can have an impact on the psychological and physiological well-being of a person, affecting daily mood. The Mayo Clinic says that a lack of adequate lighting can make people feel depressed. That’s because light deprivation can affect the production of the hormone melatonin, leading to physiological imbalances. An abundance of light can get bodily systems back in check and also may be an alternative therapy for common emotional issues. Lighting is such an important factor in mood that even stores and businesses study the effect certain lighting can have on people and their impression of a space.

W

In fact, lighting design is an art and a science. Lighting designers must have an understanding of the visual quality needed for users' health, safety and enjoyment. The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America lists the basic body of knowledge on lighting in the IESNA Handbook. It includes summaries of recommended practices based on research and consensus of successful lighting for specific applications. But individuals don’t need an extensive knowledge of lighting principles to improve their own interior lighting situations. Instead, a cursory understanding of what works can do the trick. Here are some things to consider: ■ People are attracted to light. If lighting is necessary for safety, brighter illumination will guide the way. ■ Brightness focuses personal attention on a

particular object or area. ■ To create a more pleasant atmosphere, use wall lighting instead of overhead lighting in a space. ■ In public spaces or areas where individuals need to be alert, overhead lighting is the best option. ■ Dim lighting is best for rooms where relaxation is desired. That is why table lamps are often used with a shade to diffuse the light. ■ Homes typically need a combination of lighting sources. An overhead light paired with ambient light and task lighting can help most people get things done. ■ According to light bulb manufacturer Sylvania, think in terms of layering light. Light sources should be placed at different heights throughout Please see LIGHTING, pg. 6

same. Some are completely organic, while others contain fragrances, dyes, color crystals and excessive fillers. Last weekend, I mixed up some oxygen bleach to clean algae from my lower deck and from the deck railing. I simply dissolved the powder in warm water, poured it into a simple garden hand-pump sprayer and squirted it on the algae-coated surfaces. I allowed it to soak for about 10 minutes then used a scrub brush to remove the green algae. After rinsing with a garden hose, the surfaces looked brand new!

You can clean roofs with oxygen bleach, but it can be challenging. The biggest problem is that it’s dangerous working up on a roof. The algae-covered roof, once wet with the oxygen bleach solution, can be very slippery. You need to make sure you do not fall from the roof. It’s imperative that the roof surface, or any surface you’re cleaning, does not dry out before you get to scrub it. You must keep the surface wet with the solution at all times. This is hard to do on a roof on a sunny day. It’s best to clean roofs on overcast days when air and roof temperatures are cool. You need to scrub the

surface after the oxygen bleach solution soaks. Don’t ever think that you can just spray on any magical cleaner and get perfectly clean surfaces. Marketers that make that claim are appealing to your desire to take the easy way out. Don’t believe the sprayand-rinse claims for a second. Biocide option Once you have cleaned the surfaces, you can inhibit the growth of algae if you coat the surfaces with a biocide. This is not easy, it can be expensive, and it’s a constant maintenance headache. Copper is a natural biocide, as is zinc to a degree. If you have an exposed copper or zinc

strip about 3 inches wide along the top of your roof, each time it rains, tiny metal atoms will be deposited on the roof. Algae will not grow in the presence of copper or zinc. It’s hard to get copper to coat siding, decking or patios. You can see why you’ll just have to suck it up and do periodic cleaning to keep your home looking great. You can watch two informative video showing how to use oxygen bleach to clean a roof. Just type “removing algae stains video” into theAsktheBuilder.com search engine. –Tribune Media Services

Summer’s ‘dog days’ often Appliance choice, smart pose challenges for pets use results in savings hen the warm weather arrives, conscientious pet owners typically re-evaluate how to care for their pets. As the seasons change, so may a pet’s needs, and different safety precautions might be necessary. Warm weather seasons are favorite times of year for many people. Pets, too, enjoy the benefits of the warm weather, including more opportunities to frolic outside. But the sunshine and hot weather that is synonymous with the summer season can prove treacherous to some pets. Although the hot months are sometimes called “the dog days of summer,” that doesn’t mean your dog enjoys them. According to Dogs in Antiquity: Anubis to Cerebrus: The Origins of the Domestic Dog, by Douglas Brewer, Sir Terence Clark and Adrian Phillips, the term “dog days of summer” was coined by the ancient Greeks and Romans actually to describe the

W

hottest days of summer that coincided with the rising of the Dog Star, Sirius. It has nothing to do with dogs loving the summer. So keep in mind your pooch and other pets may not be acclimated to hot weather and may suffer for it. Dogs, cats and small animals that are left inside a hot car, even for a few minutes, can be susceptible to heat-related illness and even death. Dogs are particularly vulnerable to the heat because they can only cool off by panting and through the sweat glands in the pads of their feet. Animal cruelty laws apply to just about anyone who endangers their animal’s life through negligence. Failure to take weather conditions into consideration may be a criminal act, depending on where a pet owner lives. To avoid heat-related injury to a companion animal, keep these tips in mind: ■ Even on a day that seems mild, an enclosed

car can reach deadly temperatures. A Stanford University study found that even when it was a mere 72 degrees outdoors, the interior temperature of a car reached 116 degrees within one hour. Research further indicated that cracking the windows of the car had little effect on lowering the internal temperature of the vehicle. ■ Pets generally have a higher body temperature than people. A dog’s normal body temperature, for example, is between 101 to 102.5 degrees. Being outside in the heat or locked inside a hot room can quickly bring that body temperature up. Nerve damage, liver damage, heart problems and even death can occur if a dog's body temperature rises just a little bit. ■ It is important to provide pets with extra water, as they may be thirstier when it is hot outdoors. If you will be spending a day away from home, leave one or two bowls of water availPlease see PETS, pg. 6

the audit will assess how much energy your home consumes and evaluate what measures you can take to make your home more energy-efficient. If you prefer to do an energy audit yourself, you can look at a few key areas around the

home where there may be air leaks or inefficient uses of energy. First, turn off any combustible appliances, such as water heaters and furnaces. Make sure the windows are closed, then turn on exhaust fans in the bathroom and kitchen to suck the air out of the rooms. Feel around outlets,

doors, windows, baseboards, fireplaces and attic hatches for any apparent leaks. Use a stick of incense to easily see the flow of air in the incense smoke. If any leaks are found, address each one. This generally involves recaulking or sealing around points of entry.
