Tourney, weather go hand in hand When you think of the Memorial Tournament, you can’t help but think of rain.

It seems like so many golf fans over the years have been soaked at Muirfield Village Golf Club or, even worse, hurried off the course when severe storms approach.

So is this CHRIS just typical Ohio weather BRADLEY or is the legend of Chief Leatherlips true after all?

Ohio’s premier golf event has had its share of rain with precipitation two out of every three years. Obviously, some years have been worse than others.

In 1979, it actually snowed and wind chills dropped into the teens. High winds have grounded the Goodyear blimp and frustrated plenty of golfers over the years.

I can’t help but remember a year we were broadcasting live from the clubhouse deck when a storm blew in and knocked down our light stands and camera.

The tournament used to be played before Memorial Day but was moved after the holiday in hopes of better weather.

It has been held after the holiday since 2003.

But a look at the average rainfall and high temperature shows little difference in our weather. The average daily rainfall the last week of May is .15 of an inch per day with a normal high temperature of 77 degrees. Average rainfall the first week of June is .14 of an inch per day with an average high of 79. Of course, thunderstorms are a whole different story as they can drop five times that much in one afternoon alone.

That leads us to the talk of Chief Leatherlips and the rain curse on Dublin. Many believe monsoon-like rain is punishment for building the golf course near the sacred Indian Burial Ground of the Wyandot Tribe. Folks around these parts joke that if it’s the week of the Memorial, Leatherlips is bringing us rain.

Not everyone, though, is complaining about the rain. For golfers competing in the Memorial, a dry course is fast and the ball will bounce.

Putting on hard and firm greens is much harder. A wet or soft course is actually preferred as it gives golfers more control and better scores.

Jack Nicklaus is the only six-time winner of The Masters. So when he began his own event 38 years ago, the Memorial Tournament paid homage to Augusta National’s annual April event.

In 2012, Woods became the only five-time winner of the Memorial. But last year, he tied for 65th with an 8-over 296, the second-highest tournament score of his career. Woods carded a 7-over 79 in the third round.

On March 31, Woods underwent microdiscectomy surgery to relieve pain from a pinched nerve in his back. He last played competitive golf March 9 in the Cadillac Championship at Doral, where he tied for 25th.

“When either Arnold (Palmer), Gary (Player) or I didn’t play, the TV ratings went down, but golf is bigger than one person,” Nicklaus said. “I feel bad for Tiger. Some of his prime years are being taken away from him. He’ll recover and he’ll be fine and the game of golf will be fine. There are more good players in the game today than we’ve ever had.

Woods posted on his website May 5 that his recovery is “coming along, but it’s a very slow process.”

He missed his first Masters, where he is a four-time winner, last month and chances are he will miss the U.S. Open, which is being held June 1215 at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, N.C. When does Woods plan to return?

“I really don’t know,” he wrote on his website. “I’m doing everything I can and lis-

tening to my doctors and working on a strength program, and then we just have to see how my back is. Some people heal up in three months, some people take four months, some people take longer, I just don’t know.”

Tourney still will have a strong field The world’s No. 1-ranked golfer won’t be in central Ohio, but plenty of the game’s best will be, including early commits Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott and Bubba Watson.

Watson, 35, won his second Masters in three years last month and Scott, 33, won the Masters in 2013. Mickelson, 43, is the defending British Open champion. Along with the 25-year-old McIlroy, the foursome has combined to win 10 major championships.

Entering The Players Championship on May 8, Scott was ranked second in the Official World Golf Rankings, followed

by Watson at No. 4, Mickelson at No. 8 and McIlroy at No. 11.

Mickelson, 43, is making his 13th Memorial appearance. He has had a rocky history in the event. In his last eight appearances dating back to 1999, he has finished in the top-20 seven times, but he has had to withdraw twice because of injuries, including his last appearance in 2012. Mickelson has never

Area prep standouts provide inside look

By DON DELCO THISWEEKSPORTS.COM Where is Jeg Coughlin III? Typically, that question can be answered with six words: Muirfield Village Golf Club’s practice area.

“He lives there,” Village Academy golf coach Matt Conkling said. “As long as he gets his studies done for school, that’s No. 1, then he’s working hard on his game to get better and better every day.”

For the second consecutive year, Coughlin, a junior at Village Academy, joined ThisWeek Community News as a course guide to Muirfield Village, which will play host to the 39th Memorial Tournament from May 26-June 1.

Coughlin, whose family has a membership to Muirfield Village, assisted in adding two new panelists and fellow club members in Jack Herceg, a freshman at Dublin Jerome, and Phil Campisi, a junior at Watterson.

“Jeg started coming (to Muirfield Village) when he was 11 or 12,” Campisi said. “I got to know him after about a year and we’ve been best friends since.”

Last fall, Coughlin made his second consecutive appearance in the Division III state tournament at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course. After placing third as a sophomore, he won the twoday, 36-hole event with a 2-over-par 144, finishing three strokes ahead of runner-up Ben Silverman of Toledo Ottawa Hills.

“I prepared hard for states,” Coughlin said.

“I knew I had an opportunity to do something special and, luckily, I took advantage of it.”

In the days, weeks and months that spanned his two state appearances, Coughlin underwent growing pains, literally and figuratively.

As for the literal meaning, he grew seven inches to 5-foot-11.

“I would wake up in so much pain because of how much I was growing,” Coughlin said.

“It’s been a fun experience, but definitely a learning curve.”

imen increased his strength.

“I think the spurt helped his game in the length department,” said Conkling, who has known Coughlin for five years. “He’s now able to strike the ball with more force and get that ball down the fairway. It’s been amazing for him.”

Coughlin also has learned how to master the toughest part of the golf course – the six inches between his ears.

“Golf is 90 percent mental,” Conkling said.

“Golf is a grind and you have to be mentally prepared so you don’t let bad shots weigh you down or take you out of your game. From his sophomore year to his junior year, it is very apparent he is more calm and collected and that comes with maturity as you get older.”

Coughlin honed his game on the practice areas at Muirfield Village, the same areas the PGA Tour professionals use to prepare for their

Memorial Tournament rounds. The practice areas also are where Coughlin befriended Herceg and Campisi.

Herceg also can call himself a state champion. He was one of five players who combined to lead Jerome to its third consecutive state title last fall. The Celtics won the 36-hole, 12-team Division I tournament at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course with a 641.

Herceg shot a 165 at state to tie for 21st, as the Celtics finished five strokes ahead of runner-up Pickerington North.

Jerome became the first boys program in the state to win the large-school state tournament three consecutive years since Columbus Aquinas accomplished the feat from 1953-55.

As for Campisi, he is expected to be among the key returnees this fall for Watterson, which won the 11-team Division II sectional at The Players Club at Foxfire with a 326 as John-

stown placed second (332).

Three days earlier, Campisi carded an 87 in the CCL postseason tournament at Cook’s Creek.

As course guide panelists, Coughlin, Herceg and Campisi each described six holes at Muirfield Village. The hole descriptions appear on subsequent pages in this Memorial Tournament preview section.

Not only do the panelists take great pride in being members at America’s 14th greatest golf course, according to Golf Digest, but their descriptions of the holes are evidence that they are skilled and knowledgeable golfers.

“When we first became members here, I do remember thinking how cool it is to be members because that’s where they have the Memorial,” Herceg said. “It’s just a great place to play and practice golf.” ddelco@thisweeknews.com

Scott and Watson both are making their ninth Memorial appearance. Scott has had two top-five finishes, tying for fourth in 2006 and tying for fifth in 2007, and tied for 13th (285) last year. Watson has tied for 27th twice (2007 and 2009) and tied for 29th (288) a year ago.

McIlroy is making his fifth appearance with his best finish coming in 2011, when he placed fifth. He tied for 57th (294) last year.

Americans. The United States team beat the International team 18 1/2-15 1/2, marking the Americans’ fifth consecutive victory and their eighth win in 10 Presidents Cups.

The margin of victory was the closest since the U.S. team won by the same score in 2005.

The event was marred by rain. Play was suspended at times during the first three rounds and a total of 1.97 inches of rain fell during the four-round event. “(Paul Latshaw, Muirfield Village’s director of grounds operation) is still in cleanup mode from the Presidents Cup,” Nicklaus said. “Since they left, we’ve had bad weather and not much has grown back. I hope he’s got a lot of leaves to glue back onto the trees. Either that, or we need warmer weather.

“I’m kidding, of course. Paul does a great job and Muirfield Village will be ready for the Memorial Tournament. We’ll be fine.”

Longer look at the final hole

Before the Presidents Cup last fall, Muirfield Village underwent its latest tweak: No. 18 was lengthened. held at Muirfield Village.

“Over (last) summer, we Woods beat Richard Sterne 1-up to clinch the Cup for the added just over 40 yards to the

tee shot,” Nicklaus said.

What does that mean for the touring pros in the Memorial Tournament? It is time to take a driver out instead of a more predictable fairway metal or long iron off the tee.

“With the added length, the

bunkers that threaten at the right corner of the dogleg now come back into play,” Nicklaus said.

“A long drive that is hit too far left can find the creek that boards the left side of the landing area.”

A driver is needed to not

only place it between the creek and bunkers, but also hit far enough to get past the large tree that punishes a short drive.

Major championship still eludes Kuchar

Last June, Matt Kuchar entered the media center for the obligatory post-event news conference as the Memorial Tournament victor.

He was positioned at the dais adjacent to the trophy, but, more importantly, Jack Nicklaus was sitting there, too.

Midway through questions about his first Memorial win, Kuchar seized the opportunity to talk about the U.S. Open, which was teeing off 11 days later at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. “What would you do coming up with Merion?” Kuchar asked Nicklaus.

There was laughter, but Kuchar wasn’t angling for comic effect. He wanted to pick Nicklaus’brain and the 18-time major champion obliged.

Despite receiving sound advice, Kuchar would not be able to ride the momentum of his win at Muirfield Village into his first major title in the 113th U.S. Open or in the season’s other two majors – the Open Championship and PGA Championship.

A year after his Memorial win, Kuchar remains one of the best players in the world.

This season, before competing in the Wells Fargo Championship held May 1-4 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., he finished outside the top 25 just twice, lost in a playoff in the Shell Houston Open, tied for fifth in the Masters Tournament and, a week later, holed out from the No. 18 greenside bunker at Harbour Town Golf Links to win the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, S.C. Kuchar has not missed a cut since the 2012 PGA Championship, but he still cannot call himself a major champion.

He has come close. He entered the final round of this year’s Masters tied for third at 4-under par, one shot behind co-leaders Bubba Watson and Jordan Spieth. Kuchar carded a 2-over 74 to tie for fifth.

“I don’t know how many opportunities you get at winning the Masters Tournament,” Kuchar said after his final round at Augusta National on April 13. “I don’t know how many more I’ll get.

It’s one of those things, you getting the situation and you hope to take advantage, but it’s a lot better in this position than playing early on Sunday, that’s for sure.”

Kuchar’s best finish at Augusta National came in 2012, when he tied for third.

He also has had top-10 finishes in the 2010 U.S. Open (tied for sixth), the 2012 Open Championship (tied for ninth) and the 2010 PGA Championship (tied for 10th).

After falling just short at the Masters again this year, Kuchar is firmly entrenched among the group of PGA Tour players who have not won a major title, joining Jason Day, Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Dustin John-

Hope remains for Kuchar, who at age 35 is still in his prime. He has shown he can win against a strong field, as evident by his Memorial Tournament victory last year and a win at The Players Championship in 2012. Both tournaments feature a field that elicits the label “a fifth major.”

“His bad shots hit greens,” Chappell said of Kuchar, who hit 13 of 14 fairways and 16 of 18 greens in the final round of the Memorial last year. “And he’s really good with the putter. I was fortunate enough to get as close as I did because he did make a (bogey) on No. 16.

“I heard (Nick) Faldo say on TV (the week before last year’s Memorial), (Kuchar is) not a 10 in every category of his

game, but he’s better than a seven in all aspects of the game.

And he just doesn’t make very many mistakes.”

Muirfield Village has been kind to Kuchar. Before last year, he tied for second in 2011, tied for eighth in 2010, tied for fifth in 2009, tied for 10th in 2008 and tied for 13th in 2007.

In his first eight Memorial appearances, he missed the cut only once (2003).

“I really enjoy the course,” Kuchar said. “It’s a course that fits my eye really well. I’m not really sure why I have a great track record there, but I hope to have a good track record at a lot of places.”

But during tournament week, it is so fast if you miss on your approach in the wrong place, it’s not going to be an easy up and down.

Fore Hope

Local nonprofit offers hope through golf

By DON DELCO THISWEEKSPORTS.COM Mindy Derr was simply doing what felt right by visiting her sister-in-law’s brother, who was recovering in an Ohio State hospital room.

She never expected her life’s work to come up in polite conversation.

“They told me about Fore Hope here,” Terry Hitchman told Derr when she visited him in March 2013. Hitchman had his right leg amputated after a bout with soft tissue sarcoma, a type of cancer that develops from certain tissues like bone or muscle.

For the last 25 years, Derr has been the executive director of Fore Hope, a local nonprofit organization that uses golf as a vehicle to improve the quality of life for people with various life challenges, such as disabilities, injuries and illnesses.

“I never pushed Fore Hope on him,” Derr said. “But I told him, we’re here whenever you’re ready.”

On April 23, Hitchman was ready. Along with his wife, Tammy, he drove a little more than an hour south from their home in Richland County to Four Seasons Golf Center in Whitehall. There, he spent an hour with Fore Hope’s program director and certified

Mindy Derr, Guy’s daughter, graduated from Ohio State a year before her father retired.

Her background was in nonprofit organizations and she always knew she wanted to do something with golf.

“My family, not me, but my brothers and my dad, were the best golfers,” she said. “In three counties, the Derrs were known for their golf. My dad was the tops. My one brother considered going pro and my other brother became a golf course superintendent.”

In 1989, Derr left her position as an executive with Boy Scouts of America to start Fore Hope.

“About that time, dad became truly disabled,” she said. “There were only a few programs, but it was only golfteaching professionals who were skilled to teach people with disabilities.”

Derr had a bigger plan. She wanted to create an adaptive golf program for people like her dad. While working in northeast Ohio for the Boy Scouts, she came across Akron General Hospital and its adaptive golf program. She attended an open house, where she met Barbara Nicklaus.

“I was talking to her about fundraising,” Derr said. “She said to me, ‘You know, Mindy, Columbus is great when it

comes to that.’ I remember thinking, ‘Thank God,’ because I knew I was coming here.”

Key connections essential to success On May 28, Fore Hope will host its annual champagne breakfast at The Country Club at Muirfield Village. Beginning in 1992, the breakfast has featured a guest speaker, which typically is a PGA Tour professional.

The Memorial Tournament has been a supporter of Fore Hope’s mission since the nonprofit’s inception. Tournament director Dan Sullivan is one of six Fore Hope advisers and helps secure the guest speaker for the annual breakfast during the week of the Memorial Tournament.

“Columbus is such a great place for philanthropy,” Derr said. “Almost immediately when I arrived here, I was able to start a small board. The (United States Golf Association) provided funding and grants and then (The) Scotts (Company), the Memorial Tournament and Red Roof Inn were on board. Eventually, I raised enough money to add a part-time administrative assistant and we eventually were able to pay a pro a little

The tee shot here is all depending on the wind. If there is no wind, you can hit a 3-iron or 5-wood and that’ll leave you a little wedge onto the green. If the wind is into your face, you need to play a little more club, but you never want to hit that tee shot more than 250 yards, at the most.

You’ve got to be precise on your approach Phil Campisi shot, so leaving a wedge from the fairway Watterson is vital. If the pin is front left, you can attack. But if it’s back right, you have to be cautious. If you aren’t sure on your distance control, you can spin it off the front and back into the water.

This is a hole that you shouldn’t get too greedy on. If you’re going to miss and the pin is in the front, a short miss is better, as there is a little area of fairway short of the green. If you get up on the right side of this hole, there is a lot of rough. You’ll be Phil Campisi hitting out of that rough with a downhill Watterson lie onto a green that runs away from you.

The ideal shot is a low draw to let it release back to the hole. The green is very firm here, so if you hit it low, it should release to a pin location at the back.

New schedule puts Memorial in second half of season

In seasons past, the Memorial Tournament arrived near the midpoint of the PGA Tour schedule.

But despite being held the weekend after Memorial Day since 2003, the Memorial now takes place past the midway mark thanks to a newly implemented wrap-around schedule.

Last October, two days after the United States retained the Presidents Cup at Muirfield Village, the 20132014 PGA Tour season began with the Frys.com Open at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, Calif. Six events from October to the end of November were contested, and full FedExCup points and an invitation to the Masters for the winner were on the line each week.

In all, the 2013-14 schedule is 45 events with the Memorial slotted in the 29th position.

“I got to get used to saying it that way with two years in it,” PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said before the start of the Frys.com Open last October. “The results of the restructure, starting with the new season right now, are yet to be determined.

But we feel very positive about the opportunity to get players into FedExCup competition with full points in the fall for the first time.”

western Mutual World Challenge, an annual tournament in December that supports the Tiger Woods Foundation.

During that call, he said it might take awhile to adjust to the new schedule.

“We were talking about this at the Presidents Cup, and it was hard to

believe that the very next week is a Tour event,” Woods said. “We felt like we were still playing our 2013 season. I think it’s going to take a little bit of time to get accustomed to. This is something that is very different to us in our sport. Other sports, it’s the norm.”

Before this season, tournaments in October, November and December were traditionally reserved for pros to compete in lower-tier events to try to keep their tour cards. The “silly season” events served mainly as madefor-TV exhibitions or overseas trips to play events in Asia, South Africa or Australia.

Jimmy Walker has taken advantage of the new format. Entering The Players Championship on May 8, he was first in the FedExCup standings with 2,046 points, thanks to three wins. He won the Frys.com Open for his first career PGA Tour victory after nine years and 188 starts on tour. He also won the Sony Open in Hawaii and the AT&T Pebble Beach National ProAm. “I learned a lot that week,” Walker said, referring to the Frys.com Open.

“It was stay patient, stay focused, don't get bent out of shape when you make a bogey or any of that kind of stuff.

It was another step in the right direction.”

I don’t like to risk trying to take a driver over the trees on the right, so I usually hit a 3-wood off the tee. The key is to put it down the center of the fairway so it doesn’t roll through into the creek behind the fairway. From there, I like to play my Jack Herceg layup to the right of the fairway so on my Dublin Jerome third shot the water near the green is out of play. That leaves about 100 yards, so I’ll go after the pin no matter where it is. As long as you hit a good tee shot and put yourself in position with the layup, this is a birdie hole.

I like this hole a lot. It’s actually a cool hole. If it’s downwind, you could carry the bunkers on the right and let the ball run almost to the edge of the fairway, leaving you with a wedge onto the green. If the wind is normal or not doing much, you can hook a 3-wood as much as you want, Phil Campisi as there is a ton of room on the left side Watterson of the fairway. You’ll need good distance control on your approach shot because the rough around this green is some of the nastiness rough on the course, and if you land in the bunker short, it is no easy task. You have to be spot on with your approach.

Commentary

Despite recent moves, state of golf remains just fine Sure, Jack Nicklaus has a lot to do with making central Ohio synonymous with the game of golf. Yet, four years before Muirfield Village Golf Club was completed, Riviera Golf Club opened in Dublin.

And now Riviera, a course that played host to an LPGA event and is home to the American Italian Golf Association is in its final year. Developer Chris Ruma would like to turn the 168 acres into a housing development.

Shamrock Golf Club also is expected to close after a 25-year run to make room for more housing.

Two other area courses, the Golf Club of Dublin and Tartan Fields Golf Club, went into receivership in 2009 after allegedly defaulting on loans from General Electric Capital Corporation.

Golf has a strong footing in central Ohio, but are these course closures a sign of a larger problem?

Could the state of the game be weakening?

When it comes to the area courses that are closing, it may be as simple as an economics 101 lesson: supply vs. demand.

Dublin had 681 residents when Riviera opened in 1970. Today, that number is more than 40,000. Neigh-

boring Powell had 374 residents in 1970 and, 40 years later, it hovers about 12,000.

The population boom meant an increase in real DON estate, some of it high-priced. That DELCO high-priced real estate, coupled with acres of undeveloped land, was ripe for private golf courses. Muirfield Village opened in 1974, followed by Wedgewood (1991), Tartan Fields (1998), Scioto Reserve (2001) and Kinsale (2004).

All five courses are located essentially within a three-shot par-5 of each other, north of Interstate 270, east of U.S. Route 33 and west of Route 315. The supply skyrocketed.

In the case of Scioto Reserve and Kinsale, the courses were relatively new ventures when the Great Recession hit in late 2007. Golf is expensive. Private golf is very expensive, and the country club lifestyle was a luxury that quickly fell by the wayside during the global financial crisis. Demand plummeted.

Things aren’t as bad financially as they were during the Great Recession, which ended in 2009, and the

population and development of Dublin and Powell continue to rise with no end in sight. Perhaps the problems with those aforementioned courses were just an example of capitalism doing its thing. The market was simply correcting itself. But has the demand returned?

Muirfield Village isn’t going anywhere, but a majority of golfers can’t play the private course. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has sunk money into lengthening and improving Safari Golf Club, a public course.

Nearby, Marysville has a handful of quality public courses, including Darby Creek and Marysville Golf Club.

Despite losing Riviera, Shamrock and the financial problems of Tartan Fields and Golf Club of Dublin, Columbus is not short on great golf courses — public or private. Nor is the area short on great golfers and golf fans.

Local high school programs like Dublin Jerome, St. Charles and Wellington continue to dominate at the state level, and Ohio State men’s and women’s teams have combined to win 37 Big Ten Conference titles.

Each year, the Memorial Tournament is one of the most popular events in central Ohio’s social and sporting

calendar, and Columbus also plays host to a Web.com event in conjunction with the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship from Sept. 11-14 at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course.

To its credit, golf is not blind to its problems: It is expensive and it is time-consuming. Recently, the game has tried to attack its problems head on.

Plans have been set to capture future golfers at a much earlier age.

Last April, Augusta National Golf Club played host to the finals of the Drive, Chip and Putt contest for boys and girls age 7 to 15 and plans to do so for the foreseeable future.

The First Tee, which started in 1997, continues to thrive as a nonprofit program that instills values and promotes healthy choices through the game of golf, and the Memorial Tournament does its part by playing host to an annual junior clinic the week of the tournament.

More affordable golf can be found on numerous websites offering discounts on greens fees, and some private clubs in central Ohio have altered and lowered initiation and monthly fees.

What about the slow play? Rounds on busy public courses can approach

six hours for 18 holes. That is a time commitment people with jobs and families cannot afford.

Last summer, the Golf Channel implemented a campaign to implore golfers to play faster. The idea behind the message was that if golf didn’t take six hours, it would be more enjoyable and golfers would play more often.

Despite golf’s problems, the addictive nature of the game is undeniable.

People will still get hooked. All it takes is one purely struck shot with a 7-iron landing within three feet of the cup for a tap-in birdie.

The ambassadors of the game once again converge to central Ohio for the Memorial Tournament. Arnold Palmer made golf accessible, Jack Nicklaus made golf appointment TV and Tiger Woods not only made it appointment TV, but made it cool.

As Woods approaches 40, the “coolness” vibe is starting to transfer to players like Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth.

Golf isn’t going anywhere. It has its problems, but as long as it can remain accessible and enjoyable for millions of fans, the state of the game will be strong. ddelco@thisweeknews.com

This is an extremely long hole and basically a three-shot hole for everyone.

It starts off with a tough tee shot where the landing zone is an elevated fairway, so you’re hitting into an upslope. There’s also an extremely deep bunker left that’s a problem if you tug your tee shot. If you end up there, getting to the green in three Phil Campisi is almost out of the question. The rough Watterson on the right side of this hole is some of the thickest on the course. It’s hard to advance the ball 50 yards. You never want to be there.

Finally, the green has small curvatures and little breaks. On your approach, you don’t want to go over the back. Short is bad, but over is worse.

This is my favorite hole. I love it. A majority of the time on Sundays of the Memorial, that pin is tucked up front with only three paces to work in front of that hole. It’s just a phenomenal golf hole. The green has three major parts all separated by a bit of a slope. Each pin position is Jeg Coughlin III phenomenal and there is zero room for Village Academy error with the deep bunkers that surround the green. I believe that front bunker used to be the deepest on the PGA Tour back in the 1980s. If you’re down there and it’s a front pin, you have a hefty shot looking at you.

Winner: “Jordan Spieth. I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that Matt Kuchar could defend his 2013 title, but after Jordan Spieth’s performance at the Masters, I think he has put himself in a position to win the “fifth Major” on the PGA Tour.”

Memory: “My history with the tournament is a short one, as I have only been Dublin City Schools Superintendent for one year, but Tiger Woods’ chip-in on No. 16 on Sunday in 2012 is simply legendary.”

Winner: “Jason Day. He has that calm and collected demeanor, he is a local resident, and calls Muirfield Village his home course. With his home-course advantage, being a fan favorite and having a calm manner, he is a lock.”

Memory: “Some 35plus years ago, my wife Jill, some neighbors and myself volunteered for the Sandwich Factory. We made sandwiches for the tournament for four hours, which raised money for the Children’s Hospital. There was a lot of fellowship, but as I remember, no one wanted any sandwiches after that four-hour shift.”

Winner: “Dustin Johnson. His workout sessions are legendary and he is getting married to Paulina Gretzky (daughter of former NHL star Wayne Gretzky) this fall.”

Memory: “In 1993, Paul Azinger hit his famous bunker shot on the 18th hole to win the tournament and beat his friend Payne Stewart.

Afterward, while Azinger was at the trophy presentation ceremony, Stewart put a rotten banana in Azinger’s shoes in the locker room.”

Winner: “My sister would want me to pick Adam Scott, but I’ve met Jason (Day), who is a good guy. You got to root for good guys.”

Memory: “There isn’t one. From friends who host the hospitality events to the local kids I know who I see volunteering, they all kind of roll together into an entire experience that I look forward to every year.”

Winner: “Jason Day. He lives in the area and he knows the course so well.

I think it’s his time.”

Memory: “I was sitting behind the No. 16 green in 2012 when Tiger Woods chipped in on his way to winning his fifth Memorial Tournament.”

With the new clubhouse renovations, there’s a tower that, for me, is my aiming point off the tee. That will take you down the left half of the fairway, which makes for a better angle on your approach. On that approach, it’s all about having the Jack Herceg right club. Most of the time people think Dublin Jerome that shot plays down a club because you’re hitting downhill. Usually, there’s a wind in your face, so it forces you to club up. Middle of the green is where I’m looking to land because water is right and a bunker is short left and behind the green.

This is probably one of the hardest, if not the hardest, hole on the course. It’s always a driver off the tee, but the problem is that brings both the right and left bunkers into play. You want to end up between Jack Herceg those two, but even with a good drive, Dublin Jerome you’re left a long iron onto a uphill green.

If you’re going to miss on your approach, you want to miss short left because there are no bunkers to worry about there. It makes for the easiest shot to get up and down for par.

Golf, on the other hand, can be frustrating. Yet, it works in this setting, according to LaVelle.

“At first, I was a bit nervous thinking how could I help these people,” LaVelle said.

“It was hard for me to see them so discouraged in the beginning, but as a therapist, I believe in them and I let them know they can do it. I’ve seen people grow. Their game has changed and their attitude has changed. It’s been great.”

Beginning April 29, Fore Hope will host a golf league once a week during the summer at Safari Golf Club. The league is mostly for individuals like Hitchman, an amputee, or others who suffer from any number of issues, such as multiple sclerosis, stroke or Parkinson’s disease, to name a few. Fore Hope has even reached out to military personnel.

LaVelle, Kalb and numerous volunteers will help those participating in the league in any number of capacities, from teeing a ball, to lining up the visually impaired, to driving a golf cart.

Preferably here, you hit a little draw around the corner and that leaves you a cut onto the green. The green is small, so it’s tough to hit in two when you’re hitting a wood or long iron because that requires a high fade with precision.

For most people, though, it’s hard to hit Phil Campisi both of those shots. Because of the creek Watterson that cuts through most of the fairway, this is mainly a three-shot hole for most. If you lay up, your third shot can’t be short because it’ll roll back into the water or bunker that is in front. It’s a great hole.

ticipant Appreciate Tournament will be held Aug. 15 at Safari. The eight-hole tournament pairs a Fore Hope member with a community partner. In addition, trick-shot artist and paraplegic Dennis Walters will be on hand.

Those events, along with the legacy gift provided by Scheeff, the Memorial Tournament’s support, the Guy Derr Leadership Society donors and other donations have kept Fore Hope sustainable.

If you land either in the back bunker or front bunker, you’re staring double bogey in the face with water all around you. It’s just a Jack Nicklaus signature hole.

If there is a crosswind or it’s in my face, I play to the right. Most of the time, playing to the right of that left bunker usually leaves about a mid- to low-iron onto the green. On the Jack Herceg approach, the green slopes pretty hard Dublin Jerome right to left. You want to aim toward the opening in the front of the green, where bunkers are on each side. If you stay on the right side of the green, the ball will funnel down toward the hole.

The last time the Americans won the Ryder Cup on foreign soil was 1993. Coincidentally, Tom Watson, who is captain of the U.S. this year, served in the same role 21 years ago.

Not only have the Americans struggled overseas, but they also are coming off the “Miracle at Medinah” in 2012. Europe trailed 10-6 entering the final day of 12 singles matches before earning 8 1/2 points to the American’s 3 1/2 points to win the Ryder Cup outright.

Since 1985, the Americans' record on home soil is 3-4 while the Europeans are 5-1-1 on their soil. The Europeans have won four of the last five Ryder Cups.

The best part of the Memorial, typically on a Saturday or moving day, is they move the tee up here and give everyone a risk to go for it. It brings in the risk-and-reward element. I’ve seen so many great shots here. Look at 1999 when Tiger Woods Jeg Coughlin III chipped in from 25 feet for par. Anything Village Academy can happen on this hole. Even if a player lays up, if the pin is back right and he puts too much spin on his wedge, he can bring it back down and into the water. It’s just overall a great risk-reward hole.

Woods had surgery for a pinched nerve in his back March 31 and missed the seasons’first two majors. Woods, who has not played since March 9, has said that he hopes to return “sometime this summer.”

This is a very exciting, pivotal hole. The tee shot is very demanding because there is such a severe upslope where you land it.

You can’t float it in there. You have to hit a hard shot. Depending on your tee shot, you have a short layup around 150 yards.

A bunker on the right to a severely sloping green on the left makes it a tough shot from the back. This hole is what’s great about all the par-5s at Muirfield Village — they demand such a good tee shot and reward you if you do hit a good tee shot.

According to financial summaries at ForeHope.org, the nonprofit received $108,818 in contributions and grants in 2011, but that number fell to $93,731 in 2012. Although it has been better, Derr said, donations for all nonprofits, Fore Hope included, suffered around the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and again when the global financial crisis began in late 2007. In 2009, Fore Hope lost three major grantors,

Derr said.

“As it’s our 25th anniversary, the last couple of years we’ve been taking a look at what does our future hold,” Derr said. “Quite frankly, we don’t know.”

Derr favors the model in place at Akron General Hospital with the Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute’s challenge golf program.

“From the very beginning, that was the template I saw and felt it was just right for us before coming to Columbus,” Derr said. “Here we are all these years later still talking with them and it would be great to emulate their model.”

Derr’s job responsibilities keep her tethered to an office chair, though she does go out searching for additional donations. Seeing her deal with the

daily grind of running a nonprofit organization is disappointing at times for Fore Hope’s other full-time employee, LaVelle.

“It’s easy to get caught up and get frustrated in the dayto-day activities,” LaVelle said.

“I wish she could be out here more and experience the joy on peoples’ faces hitting the ball. That’s why we’re here, so they can come out have fun and walk away with a better overall quality of life.”

“It’s been absolutely amazing and empowering to work for such a strong woman that has kept this business afloat for 25 years. Even after all the struggles we go through, we’ve been here 25 years because of Mindy.”

Lengthening the hole wasn’t greeted with open arms by all competitors.

“That’s fine, just make the green bigger,” Ernie Els told GolfChannel.com during the Memorial last year. “You can’t just take. You have to give a little, too. He’s just taking. ...

Some of the holes are just getting ridiculous.”

Nicklaus will continue to tweak Muirfield Village, just as he has since the course opened in 1976. His overriding mission is similar to his

playing days: never settle for status quo.

“I always want to do more,” Nicklaus said. “My expectations are to do more than what I’ve done. I think we’ve done well. The tournament is in great shape, the course has been great and the players and fans have accepted it. It’s been a showcase for significant events like the Ryder and Presidents Cups for a long time and we’ll continue to do so.”

“It’s a great finishing hole,” said Fred Couples, the 1998 Memorial Tournament champion and captain of the U.S. team in the Presidents Cup last fall.

If you aim over the short bunker in the middle of the fairway, that will put you between the two bunkers that guard each side of the fairway. All bunkers are in play on this hole off the tee. But if you maintain that line, you’ll have a mid- to Jack Herceg high-iron onto the green. Depending on Dublin Jerome the pin, I like to hit it farther and use the slope behind the pin to bring it back to the hole. If the pin is right, that will bring the right bunker into play, so you need to play toward the middle of the green to be safe.

We’re now in the fourth year since its redesign. When it was a brand new green, it was ridiculously firm and fast compared to the rest of the golf course. It was impossible to stop a shot from 200 yards.

Now it’s closer to a natural green and it’s looking like a little different golf hole. The back-right portion of the green is flattened Jeg Coughlin III out and they added a pin position. There Village Academy is no room for error when it’s back there, with only four paces on each side of the flag. It’s just a great hole that makes the back nine at Muirfield Village so special. This is such a difficult hole and proves champions because you have to pull off a great shot here.

Now that it’s lengthened and plays about 480 yards, that’s a long golf hole, even by PGA Tour standards. For the general public, that is the length of most par 5s that people play. When it was 40 yards shorter, the pros would pound 3 woods and hit a wedge in. Now, they’re forced to hit driver and that left creek comes more into Jeg Coughlin III play. You also don’t want to be in the right Village Academy bunker hitting uphill to that green. If you hit over the green on your approach, I’ve seen numerous guys make a five, six or seven. If you land short in the front, it is no easy bunker to get up and down out of, either. It will be interesting this year to see what happens.
