Third Street improvement plans
GVS project gains support from city By GARY SEMAN JR. ThisWeek Community Newspapers The German Village Society has taken a significant step forward in its desire to improve South Third Street. Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman has signed a letter of cooperation and agreement with the society, an important step in securing funds for the project, said Brian Santin, president of the GVS board of trustees and chair of its streetscape committee, which has been spearheading the development plans.
“In order for anybody to be willing to provide funds for us to do this work, they need to be assured the city is on board and will support this going forward,” Santin said. According to the agreement, the mayor and Columbus Department of Public Service will sign off on all appropriate applications for funding that the GVS pursues and agree to administer successful grants and other financial contributions. Also, the city has agreed to provide available demographic and engineering
reviews that might be required for any applications. The agreement, however, does not commit the city to any money for the South Third Street project, estimated to cost in the area of $12 million. The GVS has yet to choose the final design, which could take another eight to 12 months, Santin said. Coleman believes the agreement is important for the process to move ahead, said his spokesman, Dan Williamson. “German Village is one of the neighborhoods that make Columbus great,”
Williamson said. “We have a long history of partnership with German Village and support its efforts, as well as those of other neighborhoods, to continually maintain and improve the quality of their infrastructure for their residents.” Planning for improvements to South Third Street has been nearly three years in the making. With the help of Kinzelman Kline Gossman, an architectural firm, local officials have identified several scenarios that they believe would help the look and functionality of the
neighborhood’s most visible commercial corridor. Suggested improvements include new sidewalks, decorative planters, signage and lampposts and redevelopment of the gateway at Third Street and Livingston Avenue. Burying the utility lines, or perhaps moving them, also is an option. Finding revenue streams could be difficult, professional planners have told the GVS, as corporate donations, as well as federal funds, are at a premium. See THIRD STREET, page A2

Actors’ Theatre of Columbus
Swashbuckling tale opens summer season By GARY SEMAN JR. ThisWeek Community Newspapers “The Scarlet Pimpernel” will kick off Actors’Theatre of Columbus’30th summer season in Schiller Park. It’s a tale that includes daring action, romance and idealism — not to mention some lively swordplay, said John S. Kuhn, artistic director of the German Village-based theater troupe. “It’s really a story about the lengths someone will go to defend an ideal,” Kuhn said. All shows will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, May 26 through June 26, at Schiller Park. A special matinee performance will be held at 2 p.m. June 26 to coincide with German Village Haus und Garten Tour.
Admission is free but donations will be sought during intermission. The play is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Baroness Emmuska Orczy and is set in Paris during the French Revolution. The play centers on the daring exploits of the Pimpernel, the leader of an English secret society intent on rescuing French aristocrats from daily executions during the Reign of Terror. Unbeknownst to a select few, including his wife, Marguerite (Beth Josephsen-Simon), Sir Percy Blakeney (Travis Horseman) is the masked, swashbuckling marauder. After they become estranged over a dispute, Marguerite is blackmailed See ACTORS’ THEATRE, page A2

Even if Patricia Obert isn’t one to toot her own horn, someone else did. Obert, a Merion Village resident, recently was inducted to the Central Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. When she heard she was being nominated, she asked to not be considered. “I kind of chafe at this award,” she said. “I don’t feel I do more than anyone else. I don’t do it to get rewards.” Julia Nack, who works for the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging, disagreed. She said Obert’s volunteer work, particularly with Patricia Obert the Volunteer Guardian Program, earned her a well-deserved place in the hall of fame. “She’s a wonderful person,” said Nack, who nominated Obert twice for induction. “For the most part, these folks are private people, independent people and they’re not in it for the glory.” Obert, 80, looks at volunteering with a sense of modesty. “I just feel that you need that give back what you’ve received,” she said. “And when you have gifts from God, you need to use them.” Joining the Volunteer Guardian Program in 2002, Obert became a court-appointed guardian to two individuals. She completed a variety of tasks for the two, who were entirely alone before she entered their lives, the agency said. Obert, who visited them weekly, advocated for improvements in their care and kept a careful eye on their care and medical needs, according to the agency. The two individuals have since died. Because of an accident in 2010, Obert was no longer able to participate in the Volunteer Guardian Program. Obert, born Patricia Ruffin, was raised in Decatur, Ill. She moved to Columbus at 17 and graduated from East High School in 1948. She married Ernest Obert in 1953. She worked various jobs throughout the years, retiring from Quality Meats in 1995. Rally for Reilly
Residents organize fundraiser for injured toddler with local roots By GARY SEMAN JR. ThisWeek Community Newspapers Community members are stepping up to help a 2-year-old boy badly injured in an accident. Local artists, musicians, restaurateurs and friends are participating in Rally for Reilly, a fundraiser for Reilly Gall, who was seriously injured in January in southern Colorado.
Reilly is the son of Sean Gall, a former German Village resident and 1998 graduate of Bishop Ready High School, and Ashley Doyle. Gall is the son of Tim and Sue Gall, owners of the Hey Hey Bar and Grill in Schumacher Place. The event will be held from noon to 8 p.m. May 22 at the Columbus Maennerchor, 966 S. High St. Admission is free but donations will be
accepted. Live music, a live auction, a silent auction,a raffle and games will be part of the lineup. Food and beverages will be available at a cost. Sue Gall, who also is general manager of the Maennerchor, said support from the community has been strong ever since the accident happened. “People are amazing,” she said. “It just gives you a whole new perspec-
tive on what community is all about.” Speaking from his home in Moffat, Colo., Sean Gall said the accident occurred Jan. 27 when Doyle drove with Reilly in an all-terrain vehicle, or ATV, to feed yaks on the family farm. When she got out of the four-wheeler, Reilly wriggled out of his seatbelt and climbed into the dri-

As he heads back to France, with his wife in pursuit, Blakeney meets with more calamity and adventure. Kuhn said he wrote the adaptation intertwining the love story with vigorous fight scenes while keeping true to the story. “I always approach it with a huge amount of humility and respect for the author,” he said. “I try to translate to the stage what the author’s intent was in creating the novel.” Jason Speicher plays Degas, a Chauvelin henchman who is dispatched to capture the elusive Pimpernel. Speicher also is the fight choreographer, a role he cherishes and finds challenging. He and the actors spent hours rehearsing the fight scenes to make them feel — and appear — natural. “I make sure they’re always comfortable doing what they’re doing because if they aren’t comfortable on stage, the audience isn’t going to believe it’s real,” Speicher said. “I love it when the audience gets into the fight choreographies. It makes the actors get more invested into the fight

They’re usually fast and quick. The swordfighters are confident. Even if they’re losing, they still think they can win. Swordfights get people to come to a show. The next few hours were touch and go, as the boy was transported via helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Denver, where he remained for two-and-a-half months. Much of the time he was in the pediatric intensive care unit. “At least we’ve got him home now,” Sean Gall said. “He’s getting better.” The couple has no medical insurance and the bills are in the range of $250,000, Gall said. And it’s not over. Gall said Reilly will require several more years of therapy. Also, his brain was severely damaged in the accident. “Basically, we’ve got to teach him everything again,” Gall said. Yet, Reilly has defied several negative prog-
Yet, she still found time to volunteer and passed along that value to her five children. “I guess it was more by example than anything,” she said. “I just thought they needed to learn early in life that everything isn’t handed to you on a platter, to use some of their time and not necessarily be paid for it.” Obert is treasurer of the South Side Community Ministry food pantry and is active in the local chapter of the AARP. She said she regularly exercises, doing water aerobics and weight training. “I want to keep my body going as long as possible,” she said. “I’ve done that ever since I retired.” gseman@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekNews.com

However, they hope to do a video presentation or live web feed during the event. Columbus-based sculptor Walter Herrmann, who has been friends with the Gall family for 12 years, is donating soapstone and two clay pieces for the fundraiser. Commission, GVS recognize local ‘caretakers’ this week It is finally upon us: the annual “Caretakers of a Legacy” awards reception. The night honors those who got it right, those who trusted their gut and those who thought outside the box. In German Village, though, we know that anyone undertaking a renovation project must achieve all of those ideals, so the Caretakers of a Legacy awards are for those who did exceptional work in our exceptional neighborhood. Last year’s winners joined the ranks of caretakers alumni with projects that affected the German Village Society’s history, a stunning home on Schiller Park, a new yet humble twist to a Fifth Street cottage and, finally, a nod to a group of volunteers who do what they love for the benefit of thousands each summer. The projects at 624 S. Third St., 188 Reinhard Ave., 731 S. Fifth St. and Actors’ Theatre of Columbus made their mark on their blocks, in the park and for the village at large. For that, they each received a Caretakers of a Legacy plaque. German Village is just that, a village. No single building is
more historically significant than others. No single building is more important than others. German JODY Village is the GRAICHEN sum of truly great parts and those parts make one truly great and cohesive unit. That is why for the Caretakers of a Legacy awards, the German Village Commission and the society take a moment to honor those “parts” that help make the village so great. This year’s winners more than fit the caretakers’ mold: We will honor outstanding porch restorations and what may be the “smallest” big addition in German Village. These projects respect their historic properties, complement our historic streetscapes and don’t overwhelm the original structures. Anyone who has done similar projects knows this is a tough equation to solve but these winners did it and did it well. I hope you will plan to attend
the Caretakers of a Legacy awards reception this Thursday, May 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the Meeting Haus. We are a neighborhood that knows how to make an average celebration great and if there was any cause to celebrate in a historic district, this is it. Before the Haus und Garten Tour attendees inundate us, before the summer visitor season arrives, let’s take time to recognize our neighbors for their very good, very humble work. Let’s celebrate what it is to live in a place as historic and quirky as German Village. Let’s give applause when applause is due. We bill the Haus und Garten Tour as a “tour of inspiration” but the Caretakers of a Legacy awards are about inspiring, too: inspiring our neighbors to do good work, to keep each twist and turn in the village interesting and to add to our streetscapes in a positive and meaningful way. Who knows? Maybe next year you’ll win.

As it were
Post-Revolutionary War land was cheap in frontier Ohio Ohio did not exist when the Nelsons came into the place that later would become Columbus. In 1800, central Ohio was on the edge of the frontier that had been claimed finally by the victory of Gen. Anthony Wayne’s army at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794. It was a long, difficult and nasty struggle. In the years after the end of the French and Indian War in 1763, Great Britain had claimed by treaty rights most of the land north and west of the Ohio River. It was a rich land with deep forests, great prairies and rivers that ran clean, wide and deep. It was a land worth fighting for and many people did. Wanting to maintain the lucrative fur trade that had made a fortune for the French, the British government tried to keep its restless Atlantic colonists away from Ohio. It was a vain effort. The initial ventures of men called “long hunters” soon were followed by dozens and then hundreds of settlers seeking to find a new home in a new country. The American Indian residents of the Ohio Valley resisted the newcomers, and the result often was violent and deadly on both sides. Then came the American Revolution, and the Ohio country was the scene of even more death and destruction. At the end of the Revolution, the newly created United States found itself with an unpaid army and a lot of large debts. While the new country had little money, it had a lot of land. So it paid its soldiers and creditors in land and then offered much of what remained for sale. It was the promise of that new and inexpensive land that drew people like David Nelson and his family to Ohio. Born in 1752, David Nelson was the oldest son of Robert and Martha Nelson of Anderson’s Ferry, Pa.When David was 3, the family moved to the frontier of Juniata County, Pa., and David came of age there. After the out-

break of the American Revolution, he enlisted with several relatives in the “Eighth Company, Fourth ED Battalion of Associators LENTZ and Militia of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania” on July 31, 1777. On May 14, 1778, he was commissioned a captain after serving through the long winter at Valley Forge. In March 1779, Nelson returned to his home and soon married Margaret Logan, a widow with two young sons. In addition to raising the boys, they had seven children. The Nelsons lived in central Pennsylvania until 1798, when they decided to move west to the new and inexpensive lands in Ohio. A grandchild later wrote a description of David in those years. “He was generous but stern, with a strict sense of duty and very strong in his prejudices. He was a very handsome man, abovemedium height, a fine person, reg-
ular features, black curly hair, very dark brown, almost black eyes.” His wife, Margaret, once was described as “the prettiest woman in the Lost Creek Valley” of Pennsylvania. “She had dark-brown hair, hazel eyes, regular features, fine complexion and was of a mild and kindly disposition.” Like many others in their generation, the Nelsons came to believe that a better life awaited them in the new lands north and west of the Ohio River. They moved to Chillicothe and lived there for a couple of years while David and his oldest son, Robert, looked for a new home. They found it along Alum Creek in what was called the Refugee Tract. Set aside for people from Nova Scotia who had lost land because of their loyalty to the American Revolution, the tract began at the Scioto River and ran east between what is now Fifth Avenue and Refugee Road. After the claims of the refugees were settled, the balance of the tract was made available in open sale. Some of it along Alum Creek

In brief
Pediatric HealthSource
Tics in children are quite common Tics are sudden, involuntary, repetitive movements (motor tics) or sounds (vocal tics). The most common motor tics are frequent eye blinking, nose twitching and head shaking. Common vocal tics include humming, grunting or saying actual words. Some of these tics are complex and include large parts of the body (kicking, stamping). About 3 to 6 million Americans experience tics regularly. Tics are more common in children, where one in four has a tic during the school years. Tics are five times more common in boys than in girls. Nine out of 10 children who have tics, however, will experience significant improvements in the symptoms by they time they reach adulthood. Tics are the most frequent symptom of Tourette syndrome, though it isn’t the only symptom. For a patient to be diagnosed as having TS, he or she has to have motor and vocal tics for at least one year. Impulsivity, attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive behaviors (repetitive thoughts and movements) are commonly seen in patients with TS. Cursing, which is the most publicized symptom of TS, is exceedingly rare. Stress sometimes can make tics more severe, frequent or longer in duration. Many children with tics report the urge to perform said tic, though some can suppress this for a short time. As tension builds, though, it eventually has to be released as a tic. If a child is con-
centrating on controlling a tic, it might be difficult to focus on other tasks, such as schoolwork. Because tics are outside a child’s control, children should not be disciplined for exhibiting them. In most patients, the sympPEDRO toms of TS are mild and not an indication of WEISLEDER necessarily a more serious disorder. For that reason, physicians at Nationwide Children’s Hospital tend to avoid prescribing medications for the condition. Moderate to severe cases of TS can be treated with psychological therapy (habit-reversal therapy) or one of a series of prescription medications. It is important to know, however, that there is no single medication that is helpful to all individuals with tics or TS. For more information on tics and TS, as they relate to children, parents should consult their primary-care physician. Nationwide Children’s Hospital offers treatment for severe cases, and more information is available from the Tourette Syndrome Association of America. Visit www.tsa-usa.org. Dr. Pedro Weisleder is associate professor and director of the child-neurology residency program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital — The Ohio State University College of Medicine.
AS IT WERE Continued from page A4 was acquired by Nelson and his family. Arriving in central Ohio in 1800, the Nelsons built a log house that would serve as the family home for the next two decades. Margaret Nelson wrote to her son by a former marriage in 1801: “Our new cabin is dry, and we have plenty of room, and no matter what the weather, the chimney does not smoke. My two ewes and three lambs had 10 pounds of clean, picked wool, which we are beginning to feel the need of. Last year, we had 50 yards of linen out of our hemp. We have lost two milch cows and one heifer. They are dead before we know they are sick. We have four milch cows and two heifers yet, without going in debt for them. The families along the creek have been tolerably healthy, except Mr. Turner. He had the fever and ague and Mr. Hamil-

ton and some of the children, too. I have had my health this season as well as ever I had.” In 1819, Nelson built a large brick house along the road that later would bear his name. They were early supporters of the first Presbyterian Church founded in the area by the Rev. James Hoge. For many years, the family traveled along a mud path through the forest to the church, first in Franklinton and then in the new village of Columbus. The path later became Broad Street. A letter from Margaret Nelson to her son described the importance of religion in their lives: “We have had an uncommon cold winter and a cold, wet spring. The fruit is nearly all killed, and the cornfields in many places will have to be planted over. There has been a revival of religion this winter, more than I have ever known, in Columbus, Chillicothe and different places. A number have been added
to the church, both old and young. “The Presbyterian Meeting House was finished in the winter, when the roads were good for sleighing and the house was dedicated and the sacrament held the same week. There were four or five ministers in town, and one stayed six or eight weeks, visiting from house to house, having a sermon or prayer meeting at night and Bible classes.” The Nelsons lived in one of the first suburbs of the new capital city of Ohio for a number of years until the death of David in 1829. Margaret died in 1831. At the corner of Clifton Avenue and Nelson Road, a small sign remembers the Nelson mill and the frontier community that once was around it. Just up the road on the left still stands the red-brick house of the Nelsons of Nelson Road. Ed Lentz writes a history column for ThisWeek..
