10 tips to best market your business

GOLF OUTING

On Friday, May 20, you will learn 10 new marketing tips for small and mediumsized businesses. Marketing is always a topic of interest to business owners, marketing professionals and entrepreneurs. The Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to have Mitch Greenwald of Creative Spot share his expertise with us. The founding member, Greenwald was destined for advertising since birth — his father was already in the field. Greenwald even starred in commercials and the show “Captain Penny” when he was young. So

it’s no surprise that when he got to OSU, he created his own advertising degree program and then went on to open the Creative Spot. Today, he is the line between creative and strategy. His philosophy: “I’d rather be scared than bored.” Greenwald loves launching new products and services to market. The luncheon is open to the public and visitors are encouraged. Please contact the chamber at (614) 8767666 or through our website, www.hilliardchamber.org, to make your reservation by May 17.

Flip-flops requested

Hilliard Women in Business meeting set for June 22 As we celebrate the first full day of summer on June 22, kick off the traditional shoes you wear to work and break out your favorite pair of flip-flops and wear them to our luncheon. There will be prizes for different categories so be creative and decorate them! We will be announcing the winner of our Renai Award at this meeting. Please see the additional article on this page about this award and how you can nominate someone. The speaker for our luncheon will be Theresa Flores, a survivor of domestic sex trafficking when she was a teenager living in the Detroit area. She has written about her story in her book, “The Sacred Bath: An American Teen’s Story of Modern Day Slavery.” Flores lives in central Ohio and is the single mother of three beautiful children. She has been a licensed social worker for nearly twenty years. Flores earned

her master’s degree in counseling education from University of Dayton as a human development specialist. She is a spokeswoman for Gracehaven House.

She is featured by the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center Museum in a traveling exhibit entitled, Invisible Slavery. She has been seen on ONN, ABC and FOX28 and the Today Show. Gracehaven House gives a

safe home of hope, and healing for girls who have been forced into commercial sex trafficking. A small portion from the luncheon reservation will go towards the Gracehaven House. The cost of the lunch is $20 for chamber members and $23

The mission statement for Hilliard Women in Business is: Women dedicated to the inspiration, education, support and celebration of the personal and professional success of other business women. The Renaissance is an era which is known for its great intellectual, social and artistic pursuits. Taken literally, it was a time of rebirth. It has given history some of its greatest minds and contributions in many fields, which are still being felt 500 years later. In today's ever-changing world, we feel that the contributions of women in business exemplify the multifaceted talents and interests of many of those figures. The talents necessary to achieve success within the workplace, making positive contributions to the communities we serve and maintaining balance within our lives are far more difficult than at any point in history. As such, Hilliard Women in Business would like to accept nominations for the Renai Award. The qualified candidate will be in her current business or industry for a minimum of two years, has a history of giving back to the Hilliard community and be a member of the Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce. The selection committee will also be looking for any recognitions or awards she has received related to her business or industry. Nominations must be sent to the Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce by May 31. See the nomination form on the Chamber’s website at http://www.hilliardchamber.org. for non-members. Reservations need to be made by June 17. Please pay in advance for your reservation by sending a check to the chamber or calling the chamber at (614) 876-7666 with your credit card

Chair’s perspective

How is your business-emergency preparedness plan? The Japanese earthquake and tsunami should have been a wake-up call for all Americans. The Japanese people were incredibly prepared and yet the enormity of the tragedy was not lost on them, or us who are watching from afar. While in central Ohio, we may not run the risk of having a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsumani, we do have to face weather-related disasters from time to time (who remembers the hurricane-force winds just a few years ago, that knocked out power and water for almost a

week in some areas? And 2:30 a.m. tornado sirens are not so rare.). As you should be preHEATHER pared at home for any poKECK tential natural or man-made emergency, you should also be prepared for your business. Consider a basic business-continuity plan as a beginning. If 25% or more of your staff can-

not make it into the office, will your business be able to continue to run? If the owner/boss is incapacitated (even briefly), does anyone else know what to do? Sit down and make a list of all the tasks every member of your staff handles and ensure that there’s a written copy of these tasks accessible if needed. Do a quick review of your insurance coverage and make sure that there are no gaps that leave you unprotected because it could cost you big. Our Chamber has a number of excellent insurance profes-

Swim smart. Save lives. Learn more about how you can keep your child safe this summer by visiting one of these facilities. Drowning is one of the leading causes of unintentional deaths in children under 14 years old and is preventable. Educate yourself and others on

sionals easily found on our website —www.hilliardchamber.org — if you need a local agent. Ensuring that your business can continue to run during periods of brief emergencies will help you feel more prepared to deal with these situations. In addition to ensuring that your business can continue to operate, you want to be able to handle an emergency incident that occurs while you’re in the office. Your business should have a basic first-aid kit as well as several flashlights. If you can’t leave for several more hours – or even

a day – when you aren’t expecting it or planning for it, will you have the tools and supplies you need? Consider water storage and granola/energy bars stocked away, and then continue to rotate them every few months. The Red Cross has some great suggestions and steps to help your business and employees prepare at www. redcross.org. They suggest a “disaster kit,” a plan for evacuation (or safe spaces), and staying informed. The internet is a great place to find sample emergency plans and suggestions for training your em-

ployees to be prepared as well. We can learn from the Japanese tragedy and begin to prepare, or we can wait until we are faced with the emergency and then realize it’s too late to prepare. You owe it to your employees and customers to have a basic plan in place. Even if you can’t foresee every possible event, you can sure feel more secure knowing that you have a plan in place to work from if you need it. Lower blood pressure, lower bottom line May is National High Blood Pressure Education Month, so it’s the perfect time to remind your employees about the importance of regular blood pressure screenings. In 2010, high-blood pressure — or hypertension — was estimated to cost the U.S. $76.6 billion in health care, medications and missed work. And presenteeism, when an employee comes to work in spite of illness, costs employers about $247 per employee with high-blood pressure. Since about a third of U.S. adults has high-blood pressure, which amounts to a large chunk of change. To cut down on what high blood pres-

sure is costing your company: • Educate your workforce. Make sure they know the dangers of hypertension and pre-hypertension. Have a health professional visit the office to provide free blood pressure screenings. For posters, brochures, and educational materials, visit anthem.com/ time wellspent and look under “Know Your Numbers.” • Get them moving. Being physically active lowers a person’s risk for developing high-blood pressure. In fact, regular exercise can cut it in half. Encourage your employees to be active by negotiating a discount with a gym, sponsoring fitness events,

or offering incentives for getting fit. • Keep them balanced. Aside from raising blood pressure, employee stress is costly in itself. To cut your costs, take a proactive approach. Take advantage of a free “Quality of Worklife Questionnaire” from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and form a team to make recommendations on how to improve working conditions and reduce stress. In the meantime, keep lines of communication open so your employees feel confident they’re being heard. — Reprinted courtesy of Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield

Spotlight on Business: Sunset Cemetery Sunset Cemetery has been a member of the Franklin County business community since 1922. Today, we are a proud member of the Dignity Memorial network of funeral, cremation and cemetery-service providers. Founded by Otis (O.D.) Leach, Sunset Cemetery sits on 132 total acres of rolling hills, only 58 acres of which have been developed. The cemetery’s heartshaped pond was hand dug by Leach’s brother. The pond area offers a quiet and relaxing place to reflect on the loss of a loved one and feed the ducks and geese that visit the cemetery each year. Sunset Cemetery has served the heritage of third and fourth generations of families with more than 31,000 interments. Sunset Cemetery is a business partner with the Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce, the Hilltop Business Association and the Grove City Chamber of Commerce. Sunset Cemetery offers traditional ground burial, mausoleum entombment, niche inurnment with both upright and bronze memorialization. Af-

fordable payment plans and financing are available for preneed arrangements. We believe creating meaningful ways to pay tribute to a loved one begins with compassion and is shaped by the understanding that each life is truly unique. For us, there is no greater responsibility than honoring and preserving the story of one’s life. When you choose a Dignity Memorial provider, you not only receive the compassionate care you expect from a locally operated establishment, but also the value you deserve from the largest network of funeral homes and cemeteries—including an array of services that is unmatched by any other funeral provider in North America. As a member of the Dignity Memorial network, we offer Away From Home Protection, 24-Hour Compassion Helpline, National Transferability, Bereavement Travel, Personal Planning Services, Grief Support, Veterans Benefits, Free Personal Planning Guide and Child & Grandchild Protection.

The Chapel Mausoleum sits in the Sunset Cemetery’s 132 acres.

Reinvention or extinction: The choice is yours If you’ve spent a few years as a small business owner, it’s a safe bet that you’ve discovered that you must keep reinventing your business. All of this reinvention can never stop because the 21st century marketplace becomes less like a destination and more like a moving train. Indeed, the Hobson’s choice for a small business is reinvention or extinction. Let’s talk about reinventing your business, yourself and the fact that there should also be a balance between the two. In his book, “Creative Approaches for

the Cost Effective Organization,” Steven Martin says there are five generations of business growth: 1. Work: The entrepreneurial stage. 2. Sell: Focus on sales growth and market share. 3. Cut: Focus on efficiencies to drive the bottom line. 4.Buy:Acquire assets to reach the next level. 5. Think: All actions are proactive. It’s almost a natural law that a successful business will reinvent itself along

these five generational lines. And since each growth step requires a different kind of manager, be sure to reinvent yourself. Unfortunately, there is no corresponding natural law to help keep your personal reinvention matched up with, and parallel to, that of your company. Consequently, keeping your personal intellectual growth in sync with your business requires constant attention and honest self-analysis. Personal reinvention doesn’t mean you go from being a surveyor to a surgeon. It

means that instead of being intimidated by technological advancements, you actually become a visionary expert on how to leverage new capability. It means you go from knowing nothing about how an earthquake or a military coup d’etat on the other side of the planet could affect your business six months from now, to being pretty good at identifying local, as well as global, threats and opportunities. Perhaps the best example is when you’re able to delegate tasks that you once trusted only yourself to do to the

Make the wellness ripple effect work for your company Is your company promoting an employeewellness program this year? If not, you could be missing out on some serious benefits. Our behavior and choices — and therefore our health — are influenced by the people around us. Check out these statistics published by the WellPoint Institute of Health Care Knowledge: • A person is 71% more likely to become obese if a close friend of the same gender becomes obese. The likelihood of becoming obese is 40% greater if an adult sibling becomes obese, and 37% greater if a person’s spouse becomes obese. • The odds of a person quitting smoking in-

crease by 67% if his or her spouse stops smoking. If a friend quits smoking, the odds of quitting increase by 36%; if a sibling quits, by 25%; and if a coworker quits smoking, a person’s odds of quitting increase by 24%. Clearly, the lifestyle choices we make affect the health of the people around us. Make this ripple effect work for you and your employees by encouraging healthy choices. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has partnered with Bob Harper of “The Biggest Loser” to develop tools that leverage the positive influence we can have on others. The Health Footprint calculator, at http://connects2.anthem.com, helps people see

the effect their choices has on the people in their lives. The site includes health tips from Harper, links to Anthem wellness programs, and a calculator where employers can see the potential health care savings from even a single employee making positive changes for their health. So stage a company-wide smoke out, or start a corporate team for the Pound-for-Pound Challenge [pfpchallenge.com], where each pound your team pledges to lose results in a pound of food being donated to a local food bank. Even if only one person is successful, their success translates into dollars saved and improved health that radiates outward and inspires others.

capable staff you’ve hired. Circumstances require you to reinvent yourself whether you’re ready or not. When that happens you can choose to be a whiny victim or embrace the change. But remember this: Only owners who lead change can run and grow successful businesses in the 21st century. Write this on a rock ... Reinvention or extinction - the choice is yours. This artricle was written by Jim Blasingame, small business advocate.
