Ordinance clarity

Resident seeks clarity on raising chickens By DAVID S. OWEN ThisWeek Community Newspapers A Reynoldsburg resident wants the city to clarify ordinances regarding raising backyard chickens. Canterbury Lane resident Richard Boone addressed Reynoldsburg City Council on May 9 about the lack of specificity in city

code regarding raising chickens. Boone said his family maintains a variety of trees and gardens on their property, and each year they try to add something new. “This year we’d like to add a few backyard chickens, a few egg-laying hens to give us a living experience of agriculture,” Boone said.

After contacting the city to find out if raising chickens is permitted on residential property, Boone said, he found the city’s ordinance might not allow it. “In looking at the city ordinances, there is some tension in the code, and I am not quite certain if I am permitted to have chickens,” Boone said. “I wouldn’t want to count my chickens before they are hatched.”

Boone said he found in the city’s ordinance, under Section 505, that it does not specifically mention chickens or domestic poultry as an option. “Keeping Wild Or Exotic Animals,” in Section 505.33(d), states: “Animals which may be owned or harbored within the municipality are pure domestic cats, pure domestic dogs (not hybrid), domestic rab-

bits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, mice, hamsters, gerbils, parrot-like birds, non-poisonous fish, nonpoisonous reptiles and nonpoisonous snakes under five feet in length, hedgehogs, ferrets and horses owned prior to the effective date of this ordinance.” See CHICKENS, page A5

Slate Ridge Elementary School third-grader Nick Wallace presents the book his class wrote, called “If I was the Mayor of Reynoldsburg” to Mayor Brad McCloud on May 6. Wallace was elected class mayor after bringing in rice crispy treats. Each student in Lauren Jones’ third-grade class read a page they had written in the book to the mayor and other guests.

Third-grade students write book on being mayor, present copy to Reynoldsburg mayor By DAVID S. OWEN ThisWeek Community Newspapers Students of Lauren Jones’ thirdgrade class on May 6 presented Reynoldsburg Mayor Brad McCloud a signed copy of their book, “If I Was Mayor of Reynoldsburg.” School librarian Rhonda Eberst said that every year since Slate Ridge

Elementary School opened in 2005, its students have written a book as a class. Colorado-based Student Publishers publishes the books for free, Eberst said, and copies are available for be purchase at about $18, or 10 for a paperback. “We’ve been doing this since we opened Slate Ridge, and so we have quite a collection of books written

by students,” she said. “It’s great, and those kids can come back 10 years from now and find their book in the collection.” Jones said local government is one topic third-graders study, learning about the roles of mayor and city council and how those roles affect them now and when they get older. She said each student was required

to write a campaign speech to be mayor of the classroom for a day. “So we did that first as sort of a writing activity and social studies and from there came up with the idea: If you had the opportunity, what would you do if you were the mayor of Reynoldsburg?” Jones said. See MAYOR, page A2

Reynoldsburg development director Lucas Haire said he wants business owners to know he is there to help. Haire gave a presentation during the Reynoldsburg Area Chamber of Commerce’s monthly luncheon May 5. RACC president Jan Hills said Haire was asked to make a presentation to members because she wanted to keep the line of communication open to business owners and let them know some basic do’s and don’ts. “If you’re a business and you’re thinking of adding on, moving your business, establishing a new one, whatever, these are the things you need to keep in mind,” Hills said. One facet of Haire’s presentation was to show that Reynoldsburg is a business-friendly community and to explain some common issues and pitfalls business owners might face when either establishing or expanding a business in the city. Accompanied by city planning administrator Matt Hansen, Haire said the development department’s goal is to serve as a resource for all business in the city.

ing a sore throat for several weeks and thinking it was nothing. His daughter, Pam Perez, convinced him to see a doctor. “Shortly after Thanksgiving, he had a sore throat, and he thought it was a cold or whatever, and he kind of started eating soft food,” Perez said. “Then he came over to visit me in January, which is when I really noticed because he lost about 40 pounds at that point, so I told him he should go get it checked

out.” Perez said her father’s diagnosis is terminal, but within a week of finding out, he started on chemotherapy in an attempt to shrink the tumor in his throat and possibly buy him some time. The first treatment was so traumatic, however, that he couldn’t continue with them, she said, adding that doctors weren’t sure he would survive the initial chemo round. “Somehow, by the grace of God, he

fought and pulled through and is still holding on,” Perez said. “He’s hanging in there, and he’s still in hospice at the VA hospital in Dayton, and he doesn’t think he feels quite up to coming home yet. But even when he does, he’ll still be in hospice.” Bennett lives in Baltimore but grew up in Reynoldsburg and graduated from Reynoldsburg High School in 1968. See BENNETT, page A4

Reynoldsburg’s annual community cleanup week is less than a month away, and chairman Mary Hudson said volunteers are needed. Community cleanup week was started to motivate residents to clean out their yards, basements or garages and put trash out for Rumpke to take away on regular trash day Thursday, June 9. For that week, the city will waive the $1 fee to hold garage sales. Hudson said residents need to begin organizing what they want to either throw away or place in a garage sale during the weeklong event. See COMMUNITY, page A5

Director offers tips to business owners at chamber luncheon Continued from page A1 “We want to be there to solve any issues you’re having and help connect you to any resources that you might need,” Haire said. “Whether it’s capital needs or whether you need resources to contact the state for certain grants, we want to be there to help you get through any issues that you’re having.” Haire said another responsibility his department has is to encourage new investment in Reynoldsburg. “We want to broaden the tax base and make it as broad as possible and as diverse as possible so that we’re not dependent on necessarily one large business,” he said. “A lot of communities get one large business that might close or leave and it devastates its whole economy, so we want a broadened, diverse tax base and lessen that burden on the residents of Reynoldsburg.” Haire said his staff is approachable, being a small development department for a city of Reynoldsburg’s size. “When you call in, you’re going to talk directly to me or to Matt (Hansen), and there’s not a lot of

‘he said, she said’ thing going on because we work very closely together.” As for some of the business do’s and don’ts, Haire said, the main thing is to always call his department first. He said whether it involves understanding zoning codes or reading the city’s development handbook, all of those things can make it easier for business owners to accomplish what they want to accomplish, on time and on budget. “Do contact us first when you’re planning any project so we can let you know what processes you need to undergo to get to whatever endgoal that you want,” Haire said. “We’re here to help; we’re trying to give you good advice to help you make the easiest path through any process that we have.” One “don’t” Haire mentioned involved starting a project first or waiting for the development department to make initial contact. “A lot of times people will start a project, and then they realize they should have contacted the city first, or we have one of our code-compliance officers stop by and issue them a citation and they contact

She said each student was charged with writing a short paragraph for the 20-page book, accompanied by an illustration. Here’s an excerpt: “If I was mayor of Reynoldsburg, I would make history. I would make a law to always wear your seatbelt. I would build a library so people would read. I would always help our animals. I would be the best mayor ever.” Another read, “If I was mayor of Reynoldsburg, I would make changes. I would make community service bigger. I would build many statues. I would make a law that said no criminals allowed. I would be a great mayor for Reynoldsburg.” Another read, “If I was mayor of Reynoldsburg, I would make changes. I would make our environment have cleaner water. I would improve our streets by picking up trash. I would ask citizens to recycle. I would be the best mayor.” “The class is very excited about what they achieved,” Jones said. “It teaches them local government and how to read and write. … They kind of had this idea of ‘what if it was bigger’and is this going to be different when we’re adult? It helps them see what is important in becoming a citizen of Reynoldsburg.” McCloud said he was surprised to see how many of the students had written about environmental issues, such as littering and being green, and how many of them really had ideas on how to make the city better. “There were no things that said, ‘If I were mayor, I’d live in a castle and ride in a limo.’It’s all about safety and litter and those kids of things. It’s really, really nice,” McCloud said. Jones agreed. “I’m so proud of these kids. They worked so hard all year and in everything that we’ve done, so this is a really neat reward for them,” she said. “They can’t believe that a real mayor like we learned about in local government came here, so I’m thrilled that they had that experience. It’s something they’ll remember from third grade.”

Hansen’s and Haire’s primary point was to contact the city first. “Don’t make changes first (and) then ask questions later,” Haire said. “It’s always easier to contact us up front. We‘re here to help. It could cost you a lot more in the end if you don’t contact us first and get the appropriate permits.” For more information, call the Reynoldsburg development department at (614) 322-6829 or (614) 322-6832.

You can take your chances going to the boards,” Haire said. “But we are here to really help, so we want to make it easy when you’re going through the process.” Hansen said one of the most common concerns the development department addresses is on signs — specifically, what’s allowed and what isn’t. “Signage, we understand, is one of the most important primary advertisement tools you have out there,” Hansen said. “We also realize you have some temporary signage needs, whether it be a grand opening or a special sales event or a promotional event to draw patrons in.” Hansen said the mission is to

Southwest Licking hires Baldwin Road’s Rathburn By MICHAEL J. MAURER

Rathburn’s resignation would be effective June 30 and that the school board is expected to approve it during its next meeting May 17. Moore said Reynoldsburg hired Rathburn in 2003 as an English teacher at the high school. She was promoted to assistant principal there in 2006. She then was hired as seventhgrade principal at Baldwin Junior High School at the beginning of this school year. Moore said Terrence Hubbard is the main principal at Baldwin and that a replacement to fill her position has not been determined. “We’re currently examining all of our staffing needs district-wide, and in light of possible cuts coming from state funding, we don’t know if the position will be replaced, Moore said. “We’re grateful for her years of service here and wish her the best of luck with the new opportunity. Rathburn’s entry into Southwest Licking comes as others are

The principal of a Reynoldsburg school is leaving for a position at a nearby school district. Kasey Rathburn, currently principal at Baldwin Road Junior High School in Reynoldsburg, will start in the fall as principal at Watkins Middle School. The Southwest Licking Local school board held a brief special meeting May 4 to approve the hiring of a new principal at Watkins, which has been operating under the supervision of interim principal Don Sullivan since January. “She comes with a very high recommendation from those who have worked with her, Southwest Licking superintendent Forest Yocum said of Rathburn. “Her strong suit is in curriculum, but she also has a good reputation as a disciplinarian. We’re looking for some good things from her. Reynoldsburg City Schools spokesperson Tricia Moore said

about to lose their jobs. The board there approved final “reductions in force for teachers and staff. “I’ve passed out 18 letters in the last couple of days to different people on staff, certificated and classified, because of the (reductions in force) situation, Yocum said. “We’re not replacing most of the people who are retiring, as few as possible. But there may be a few situations where a few people who have received letters, we may be able to call them back if we have a position to fill. Yocum said the district would have to revisit additional levies or staffing cuts in 2013, following the passage last fall of an emergency levy. “With that we are doing, we are trying to come up with the numbers to be financially solvent for the next two years, Yocum said.

Commentary & opinion

International business community will see Columbus as opportunity We’ll leave no stone unturned in our effort to attract, retain and add jobs in the Columbus region. That includes reaching out globally and leveraging our great business connections throughout the world. We must think and act globally to make an impact locally. It’s no surprise that the Columbus region must compete for business beyond U.S. borders. The Columbus2020! team travels the globe to identify these opportunities. Attracting business and supporting international business interests in the region is the job of Deborah Scherer, director of Columbus2020! global markets. Under her direction, our team first will reach out to the nearly 300 foreign-owned businesses in our region and travel to Israel, Canada, India, China, Germany and several other European countries this year alone. It must be said that Japanese companies, led by Honda and its many suppliers, remain in our thoughts and prayers. We likely will visit Japan in the fall and continue to do all we can to strengthen our relationships with the many Japanese companies that provide so many good jobs across the Columbus region. When visiting our international contacts, we will tackle a full schedule of objectives. The first target is to visit headquarters of our existing businesses to thank them for investment in our region and to explore opportunities for expansion of their businesses. Second, we want to speak to companies doing business in the United States but without current facilities or people on the ground. Finally, it is important to meet with advisers and international business organizations

that could spread the word that the Columbus region is a dynamic business location for internaKENNY tional compaMCDONALD nies. We will do just that in a few weeks when our team travels to Germany and Israel. In February, our team traveled as part of a delegation to India, and the contacts made there are starting to foster interest in our region. Together with Franklin County, we led a team to New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and the Columbus sister city, Ahmedabad. We were able to represent a cross section of the region’s leading industries, including financial services, information technology, legal and education. Participants included the city of Columbus, Columbus Sister Cities International, Ohio State University, Jones Lang Lasalle, Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter, Bluemile Inc. and SGI Global Business Advisors. India is home to a growing number of companies looking to international markets for growth, and the U.S. market is tops on their lists. Over 10 days, our mission generated more than 40 meetings, resulting in new and strengthened relationships, business-development opportunities and institutional relationships that will benefit the region both economically and academically. Since returning from our trip, nearly 10 India-based companies have expressed an interest in visiting Columbus. Our objective for each economic development action,

whether as a meeting with many of our great companies in the region or a visit abroad, is to generate more foreign direct investment, more jobs and more global connections. To do that effectively, we must continue to invest in these efforts month after month and year after year. When we travel to Germany and Israel, our goal will be to create awareness of the Columbus area and its many assets. Our region’s growing talent base, work ethic, logistics and technology strengths, established industry sectors and easy market access are just some of the reasons that international businesses thrive here. We will continue to demonstrate why the Columbus area makes sense as a location for their U.S. business operations. International business is a key part of our economic diversity in Columbus, and it is a natural extension of our efforts to develop jobs and investment here. We are proud to represent such a robust region and are excited about our appointments around the world. Kenny McDonald is chief economic officer for Columbus2020! Dave Bennett, in front of Bennett’s Garage, recently was diagnosed with esophageal cancer.

After graduation, he served for four years in the U.S. Navy and in 1973 began working full time in his father,A.C. Bennett’s, garage, at 7381 E. Main St. He had remained there until his cancer diagnosis in February, Perez said. Perez said her grandfather had died four years ago at age 95, and she thought she and her sister, Cara Purdy, would have their father around for as long. “I don’t even know how to say it. It was kind of out of the blue, she said. “It’s more like shock and upset. He’s always been a healthy man. I don’t ever remember him taking a sick day. “He always went to work, no matter what. He never smoked but did like his beer, so to see him go through this is kind of hard, she said. Bennett said he misses working in the shop and said he’d rather be working and hanging out with his friends. “I like all of my friends that I’ve gotten to know over the years, and I’ve got a big place where everybody can hang out, he said. Bennett’s friends are praying for him. “He’s a wonderful guy, said Philip Vaughn, a local historian. “His shop is behind the Reynoldsburg-Truro Historical Society, and he has a lot of friends around Olde Reynoldsburg that know him and would hang out with him. I grew up in Newark, and during my high school years, there was a filling station called Green’s Motor Clinic, and I’d go over there just hanging around and kicking tires, and

Perez said her father always has been a friendly and helpful person who could get along with everybody with a dry and funny sense of humor.

She said he is keeping up good spirits while in the hospital, joking with the nurses as though he were at the shop. “It’s kind of weird, she said. “It’s like sitting up at the shop; a bunch of guys will come up and visit, and everybody just sits around and jokes and laughs. You wouldn’t even think he was in a hospital room. Perez said her father was the only one running Bennett’s Garage and that family members are working on a possible arrangement with a friend so that it might be able to reopen. Resident seeks clarity on raising chickens Continued from page A1 He offered options to city council to see if members would consider discussing the issue and possibly amend the current ordinance to match other municipalities in the area, such as Columbus, Worthington and Bexley. One option was to add “domestic poultry in issues related to noise, odor and running loose, which are covered in the code for all animals. Another option, Boone said, would be to mirror Columbus and Bexley, which have permit systems set up. Residents there must have their plans for housing and caring for their chickens approved prior to getting a permit to own poultry. His third suggestion was more along the lines of what Worthington recently adopted — a new section to its ordinance that lists specific stipulations for owning backyard chickens. Council president Bill Hills asked Mayor Brad McCloud if any other residents have contacted the city about raising chickens. McCloud said he was not aware of any recently. “We have chased some chick-

“

In looking at the city ordinances, there is some tension in the code, and I am not quite certain if I am permitted to have chickens. I wouldn’t want to count my chickens before they are hatched.

RICHARD BOONE —Reynoldsburg resident

ens since I’ve been here, he said. “They are not very common, but we have responded to citizens’ complaints about chickens in some neighborhoods. Boone said his intent is to raise six chickens. Council member Mel Clemens said whether it’s one or six, the city usually does not change an ordinance to benefit one person. “If we pass something, we’re going to have to look at what really is going to happen, Clemens said. “We’ve got to look at how many people are interested, and do we change the city’s code for one person or if we change it for everybody. “There are things you’ve got to look at, so it’s just not as easy to say, ‘Let’s change the word to poultry,’ he said. “So if it’s something that goes before a committee for

discussion, that’s fine, but you’ve got to look at the overall deal on what you’re getting into. Council member Leslie Kelly said she personally loves the idea of possibly allowing residents to raise chickens. “I think any time we have opportunities to explore different ways of food production and learning opportunities for kids is great, she said. Hills told Boone he is sure council would consider his proposal, adding that the city administration might meet with a council committee for further discussion. “You’ve given a number of suggestions, and I appreciate any citizen that comes in and comments, or one who takes the extra steps to say this is what other people are doing, Hills said. “It makes our research a little bit easier.

Community cleanup week to start June 3; help needed Continued from page A1 Community cleanup week is scheduled to run June 3-12, with Saturday, June 4, dubbed community cleanup day. Those who want to volunteer on that day should sign up by calling parks and recreation director Jason Shamblin at (614) 322-6878 by June 3. Shamblin said the cleanup day would run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers will be asked to help in a variety of ways by cleaning up areas around the city that need it. “We send them all throughout the community; some might be picking up trash in some areas, and some people might be cleaning up trash along a creek or cleaning out landscape beds, Shamblin said. “There’s also a group going around, going to seniors’ homes, cleaning windows, cleaning out flowerbeds, cutting back their bushes, anything that might be a challenge for them. “Volunteering is a good way to give back and invest in the community and help out your neighbors, making Reynoldsburg a beautiful place to live, he said. Event chair Mary Hudson said free food and

refreshments would be served at the city municipal building for all volunteers. In addition, the city will offer document-shredding facilities and bulk-item and electronics disposal bins in the parking lot June 4 at the municipal building, 7232 E. Main St. Residents who bring in old and/or broken red recycling bins will receive a replacement bin. Hudson said bins for trash and bulk items would remain in the parking lot throughout the weeklong event. Those interested in sponsoring cleanup week should email Hudson at dickhudson@aol.com. For more information, visit www.ci.reynoldsburg.oh.us The Reynoldsburg Fix-Up assistance program is being offered again this year for elderly and disabled residents who need something fixed or who need assistance cleaning up their yards or garages. The deadline is May 21 to sign up for the assistance program. Those interested should call code-compliance officer Rick Keys at (614) 322-6824. dowen@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekNews.com

In brief Jefferson trustees choose ECN to provide CodeRED The Jefferson Township trustees have entered into an agreement with Florida-based Emergency Communications Network Inc. (ECN) to provide the CodeRED high-speed notification system and the CodeRED weather warning service for township residents. Jefferson Township officials will have the capability to deliver messages to targeted areas or to the entire township. The service is available to residents of Jefferson Township who live in Gahanna, Reynoldsburg, parts of Columbus and the unincorporated area of the township. ECN has loaded the web-based system with some of the residential telephone numbers within Jefferson Township for use in making emergency notifications. The township can provide time-sensitive personalized voice and text messages to cell phones and send emails to residents who go to www.jeffersontownship.org and enter their contact information. Weather notifications will be made on an optin basis only to cell and landline telephones. The service relays National Weather Service storm warnings and provides automated alerts to citizens in the path of severe weather just moments after the NWS has issued a warning. To obtain weather alerts, residents and businesses should visit the Jefferson Township website and click on the CodeRED Communications Center icon on the homepage to sign up

Grant, Raiders looking for big postseason run By JARROD ULREY ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Reynoldsburg High School senior Kacia Grant likes to use the phrase “train like we’re second to come out on top” when it comes to reaching goals on the girls track and field team. It’s a mantra that has served Grant and her teammates well the past two seasons, considering they are two-time defending champions at the district, regional and state levels. With the OCC-Ohio Division set to kick off what the Raiders hope is another memorable postseason, Grant knows the time is now to live by that slogan more than at anytime yet this spring. The league meet will be Thursday, May 12, and Saturday, May 14, at Pickerington North. “I think we’re starting to work harder as a team,” Grant said. “We don’t want anybody to take (any of our titles) from us. The potential is there.” Coach Denny Hammond is beginning to agree with that assessment. Reynoldsburg didn’t have junior Destinee Gause for the Mehock Relays on April 15-16 at Ashland University. Junior Faith Washington was held out as a precaution for the Poland Invitational on April 30 after being in a car accident earlier in the week. Both runners have begun to round into form in recent weeks, however, and Grant, sophomores Diamond Gause and Yamonie Jenkins and freshman Cherese Nimmons all have been steady contributors as well, according to Hammond. Some mixture of those six athletes is expected to comprise the Raiders’ 400meter, 800 and 1,600 relays in addition to running in open sprinting events. At the Poland Invitational, Destinee Gause won the 100 (12.09 seconds) and 200 (25.65) and ran on the winning 1,600 relay (4:05.3) with Grant, Nimmons and Diamond Gause. Diamond Gause, Grant, Jenkins and Nimmons ran on the runner-up 400 relay By Paul Vernon/ThisWeek (49.47) and on the first-place 800 relay Reynoldsburg’s Kacia Grant competes in the 200 meters during the Wildcat Premier at Hilliard Davidson on April 2. (1:46.04). Grant, who has signed with Wright State, thinks the Raiders are ready for a long postseason run. Senior Donyelle Brown added a first-

place finish in the shot put (40 feet, 11 1/2 inches). Brown was first in the area honor roll last week with a season-best 42-11 1/2 and also is fifth in the discus (119-6). Destinee Gause’s time from Poland in the 100 was second in the honor roll, and her time in the 200 was sixth. Washington was ranked first in the area in the 300 hurdles (44.49) and second in the 100 hurdles (15.08). The 400 relay (48.51), 800 relay (1:41.94) and 1,600 relay (4:03.73) all were ranked first. “We’ve missed a couple of dual meets because the weather has been so cruddy, but we learned a little bit (at Poland),” Hammond said. “All we’re doing is worrying about individuals right now and then we’ll get to relays. Kacia and Diamond are way ahead of where they were last year. We’ve hopefully turned the corner. We’re a little bit banged up, but Destinee’s favorite line is, ‘We’ll be fine.’” See TRACK, page B2

Reynoldsburg heats up in time for tourney By KEN KITCHEN ThisWeek Community Newspapers

The Reynoldsburg High School baseball team had been waiting for a stretch like this. The Raiders entered the week on a threegame winning streak in OCC-Ohio Division play. They beat Lancaster 17-2 on May 5 and swept a doubleheader from Pickerington Central on May 7, winning 1-0 and 13-5. Reynoldsburg can finish in the upper half of the eight-team league if it beats Groveport on Thursday, May 12, and Friday, May 13. Pickerington North has clinched the league title at 11-2, ahead of Gahanna (104), Grove City (9-4), Pickerington Central (8-6) and Reynoldsburg (7-5). Two wins over Groveport would enable the Raiders to overtake Central. North and Grove City played their league finale May 10. “We picked a great time to go on a roll right now,” senior center fielder J.C. Gibson said. “Halen (Core) is pitching well and so is Jeremy Williams and Owen McCloskey, and we’re playing error-free ball right now. We’re looking good.”

The Raiders committed one error during the winning streak. “The pitching has been good, the hitting has been good and we’ve been playing good defense, and it’s all coming at the right time,” coach Rob Gravatt said. “I’ve always said it’s not how you start the season, but how you end it.” The Raiders opened Division I district tournament play by defeating host Whetstone 9-4 on May 9.

Division I sectional play set to get under way From staff reports Hilliard Darby, Hilliard Davidson, Pickerington Central and Upper Arlington high schools will play host to the Division I boys tennis sectional tournaments Thursday, May 12, and Saturday, May 14. The top four finishers in singles and doubles at the sectional sites advance to the district tournament May 20-21 at Davidson. At the UA site, Dublin Coffman’s Hiromi Nakayama, a twotime state qualifier, is the top seed in singles, followed by UA’s Brandon Griffin (second), Olentangy Orange’s Doug Ganim (third) and UA’s Jeff Melvin (fourth). UA’s Billy Weldon and Stu Little are seeded first in doubles, with Coffman’s Jack Buchan and Leon Cai (second), UA’s Eric Vannatta and Nate Wallace (third) and Orange’s Tanner Greene and Ryan Jay (fourth) rounding out the top four. Losing to New Albany 3-2 in the first round of the OTCA Division I team tournament on April 20 not only ended UA’s string of eight consecutive appearances in the state team tournament, it forced the Golden Bears to put extra emphasis on individual success. “It stings a little bit, but it’s not like our season is ruined,” said Weldon, who won the state doubles championship with Little last season. “We still have the goal of getting as many individuals as we can on to the state tournament.” New Albany dominated the seeds in the Darby sectional, as Sean Yun, Steve Miller and Sam Romanoff are seeded first, sec-

At the Pickerington Central site, Thomas Worthington’s Casey Cempre is the top seed in singles, followed by Westerville Central’s Luke Buchanan (second), Grove City’s Joey Hemphill (third) and

Westerville Central’s Blake Burns (fourth). In doubles, Pickerington Central’s Chase Thomas and Dallas Stang are the top seed, with Olentangy Liberty’s Mitchell Lothes and Alexander Hathaway (second), Thomas’ Mark Evans and Harrison Chang (third) and Liberty’s Vick Chhabria and Matt Wong (fourth) rounding out the top four. At the Davidson site, Dublin Jerome’s Kent Seitz and Sean Stein, who placed fourth at state in doubles last year, are the top seed in doubles, followed by Gahanna’s Stephen Cheng and

0, 6-0 to repeat as second-singles champion. “Sam did a great job filling in and responding well,” Schwinnen said. “By bumping him up, that rearranged our doubles lineups on both courts and they also adjusted and played well.” The Lions reached the final on both doubles courts before rain suspended play. The finals were to be completed May 9. Daniel Emoff and Alex Gavrilov were playing Pickerington North’s Sam Prewitt and Dylan Bhaerman in the final at first doubles, and Sam Sobul and Billy Smith were playing North’s Alex Bartsch and Ben Keen in the second doubles final. “Emoff and Buck are great partners, so we had a first doubles team who hadn’t played together before,” Schwinnen said. “Our second doubles team had played some non-league matches together.” Because doubles play was not complete, final standings could not be tabulated. North also had

a rescheduled match against Newark. In the league tournament, two third-place doubles matches between Central and Reynoldsburg were scheduled to be concluded May 10. Central’s Jacob Devore and Lucas Stang were playing Reynoldsburg’s Sai Korada and Pope Blake at first doubles and the Tigers’ Mayuran Ravindran and Darree Billings were playing the Raiders’ Kyle O’Brien and Isaac Kahn at second doubles when play was halted. “We were disappointed in our play, and it looks like we’ll finish third behind North,” Central coach Kelli Rings said. “Chase Thomas lost to Grove City’s Joey Hemphill for the first time in four years. Both are seniors. Then our doubles teams had a chance to upend Gahanna because of their new lineups, but we didn’t play well. If you don’t believe, you can’t achieve. We didn’t put up the fight I thought we would.”

tests. Gibson went 5-for-9 in the three games against Lancaster and Central to raise his batting average to .523. Gibson entered the week with a team-high four home runs and 31 RBI. “J.C. is just drilling the ball,” Gravatt said. Gravatt said seniors Jon Sheline and Taylor Snare also are hitting well. They both have bat-

ted over .400 all season. Gibson said a continuing weakness for the Raiders has been how they react when they fall behind. “We have a tendency to put our heads down if a team jumps out on us,” he said. “I’d like to see us jump out to an early lead and not worry about that.”

The Lions had to shuffle their lineup as two-time league champion Stephen Cheng was taking the SAT and was unavailable to compete May 7 at Pickerington Central. Cheng won at third singles last season. “I have never been more proud of a team than I was (May 7),” Lions coach Chris Schwinnen said. “When Stephen told us he would not be there, it caught us a little off guard. The boys didn’t know what to expect. The comfort level wasn’t there and that added some pressure. “But in the end, the boys were hungry for a third straight OCC title and they really stepped up to the challenge. Now we’ve got a greater sense of accomplishment.” Sam Raybuck moved from first doubles to third singles and defeated Pickerington Central’s Sanjeev Kolli 6-4, 6-3 to complete the singles sweep. Jesse Shivener defeated Grove City’s Joey Hemphill 6-1, 6-1 for his third consecutive title at first singles, and Canyon Teague defeated Central’s Dallas Stang 6-

IS HEARING IMPAIRMENT LINKED WITH DEMENTIA RISK?

Pee Wee Membership

Reporting what may be one of the best reasons yet to purchase a hearing instrument, new research shows that hearing-impaired individuals have an increased risk of developing dementia as they age. The study involved more than 600 men and women between ages 36 and 90 over a decade. Each of the study’s participants had a hearing test at the beginning of the study, and none had signs of dementia. By the end of the study, nine percent of its participants had some kind of dementia. Those with mild hearing losses had nearly twice the chance of developing dementia as those with normal hearing. The risk was threefold for those with moderate hearing losses and fivefold for severe impairment. Choosing a hearing professional is one of the most important decisions a hearing impaired person can make At ABSOLUTE HEARING SOLUTIONS, our goal is to provide the best possible hearing care, based upon each patient’s individual needs. Financial finesse

PINK DAY STARTS MAY 14 THROUGH MAY 21

Preparing your teen for college Have a college-bound teen? It’s never too early to start prepping for financial and personal safety on campus. Having a child that is getting ready to graduate and head off to college can be an exciting time. It is also a great time to take the opportunity to teach teens how to keep their guards up and to protect themselves before they have to learn the hard way. So here are a few tips to consider discussing with your teen before he or she heads off to college: Give kids a chance to manage money. A great way to build your children’s financial foundation is to open a checking and savings account in their names. Ensure that they understand how to balance their checkbooks and make timely entries as money comes and goes. With a savings account, they’ll be able to see the value as the account grows and will feel em-

powered by contributing to the account. Add a bit of reality to financial conversations. If your teen is ERIC anxious to rent his first CLARKE apartment and live off campus, show him your monthly bills. This should help him gain a better understanding of how much things really cost and how much he will need to budget to cover his bills before he gets in over his head. Is a free T-shirt worth access to a Social Security number? The likely answer is, probably not, but our teens might not see it that way. This is a time when teens need to learn about how to care for their “identity” and how quickly thieves can steal their identity. This is an opportune time to

give your children a basic understanding about the access their Social Security numbers provide to their identity and how long it can take to repair their credit if it gets into the wrong hands. Not sure where to start? Some of this information might be provided during your teen’s college orientation, but if you’d like to give your teen an advantage, you might consider consulting your financial institution for tips on talking to teens or seek seminars offered on such topics as campus safety, protecting your identity and the do’s and don’ts of having that first credit card. “Every year before my screening, I would simply change the date on the appeal letter I sent the year before as I expected the insurance company would deny payment for my mammogram,” Elizabeth said. For Elizabeth, her annual encounter with the red tape was worthwhile as the screenings gave her knowledge and peace of mind. A couple years ago Elizabeth began working contract jobs and found herself unable to afford health insurance or the cost of screenings — yet her income was too high to be eligible for the state’s Medicaid program. Even more frightening, the team at the Columbus Cancer Clinic detected a mass in her left breast during her annual mammogram.

Needing a second screening and an ultrasound, the Cancer Clinic informed Elizabeth that she would be eligible for assistance through the state’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Project (BCCP). Administered by the Ohio Department of Health through funding by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state budget appropriations, the BCCP provides mammograms, diagnostic testing and case management services to low-income women in Ohio who don’t have insurance coverage and fall in the eligibility gap for the state’s Medicaid system. Last year, the Ohio BCCP screened See STATE, on next page

SURVIVOR CEREMONY

Regina Brett to speak at post-race event On May 14, downtown Columbus will be transformed into a sea of pink as thousands gather to participate in the annual Susan G. Komen Columbus Race for the Cure. Within the crowd of pink-clad people—there were more than 50,000 participants in 2010—certain individuals stand out because they are just a little bit pinker than all the rest. Hundreds of breast cancer survivors, marked by their solid pink t-shirts, will run and walk the 5K race course this year—accompanied by family, friends and the Central Ohio community. After the race, all survivors will be invited to participate in the Sur-

vivor Ceremony & Celebration, an empowering, inspirational event that will start at 10:45 a.m. on the west steps of the Ohio Statehouse. The keynote speaker for this year’s celebration knows all too well what it means to be a breast cancer survivor. Regina Brett has been cancer-free for 14 years. She has sisters and cousins who have lost their lives to the disease. Her daughter found out in 2007 that she, like Brett, carried the BRCA1 gene, which can cause breast cancer, and chose to have her breasts surgically removed. Brett is a well-known and respected columnist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and a Pulitzer Prize finalist twice for pieces she

wrote for the newspaper. She is also the author of God Never Blinks: 50 Lessons for Life’s Little Detours, an inspirational collection of essays, and she hosts a weekly call-in radio show on Northeast Ohio’s NPR affiliate station. At the Columbus survivor ceremony, Brett will celebrate breast cancer survivorship surrounded by fellow survivors and those closest to them—in addition to thousands of other Ohioans. As each survivor crosses the finish line, they will receive a pink rose and be asked to proceed to Survivor Palooza, a special tented area designated for survivors, to prepare to be honored at the

ceremony. During the event, they will parade across the Statehouse lawn in order of length of survivorship—from those undergoing treatment to those who have been cancer-free for decades— and assemble on the steps of the Statehouse to be recognized. The celebration won’t be without music. The Hot Pink Racers, a local band that combines punk rock and pink, will get the crowd moving. The band was organized exclusively for the Columbus Race for the Cure by Joe Cygan, the widower of Heather Pick, a Columbus television news anchor who lost her fight with breast cancer in 2008. Rebekah Smith, a talented young Columbus singer,

will also perform with accompianist Scott Solchert. Awards will be given to survivors and top runners. All are welcome on the State-

house lawn after the race this year to join in this amazing celebration of survivorship—and be part of finding a cure to end breast cancer forever.

13,591 women - of which 213 were diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately as the state has faced difficult budget challenges in recent years, funding for the program has been significantly reduced. Based on the most recent data, 150,601 women in Ohio (8 percent of the population) are eligible for BCCP however only 11 percent of that population can be screened at current funding levels. In the proposed state budget for fiscal years 2012-2013, funding for the Ohio BCCP program is reduced by another $228,000 over the next two years translating into roughly 1,300 fewer screenings. Ohio’s Komen affiliates recognize the state’s fiscal situation, so instead of asking legislative leaders to restore funding at levels from previous years, the request is to refrain from any additional reductions. “We realize that it’s unrealistic to expect the BCCP to receive more funding during these tough economic times, Komen Columbus Executive Director Katie Carter said. “When the current budget problems are resolved and the state can dedicate more resources toward prevention, we will continue to show the cost benefits of early screening versus treatment and ask that funding be increased. While state lawmakers work to reform the Medicaid system to reduce costs and improve health outcomes for Ohioans, advocates for the BCCP warn that any additional reduction in access to the screening program will only lead to increases in overall health care costs. While the average cost of BCCP services is $175, the cost of treating later stage breast cancer can exceed

OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUAL VOLUNTEER

Carole Morbitzer selected for award Morbitzer says she got involved with Komen Columbus after coaching a close volleyball match. One of her star players, Lindsey, seemed distracted. Later, on the bus ride home, she noticed Lindsey and four other girls crying. Once they returned to school she approached Lindsey and discovered that her mother had just been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. “I stood there in the rain with Lindsey, her head on my shoulder and we both cried,” Morbitzer said. “When I got in the car, it hit me. Those other four girls who were crying with Lind-

sey...their mothers had breast cancer also.” Knowing she had to get involved, Morbitzer entered her school in the High School Team Challenge Program for the Komen Columbus Race for the Cure in 2000. The Hamilton Township team continues to grow every year due to a combination of new students joining with alumni, friends, and family. Last year the team reached an all time high of 816 members, and Morbitzer hopes that number will be surpassed this year. One of those alumni running

with her every year is Lindsey, who was also one of the first people Morbitzer called after finding out she received the Outstanding Individual Volunteer Award. “[Lindsey] began to cry and said, ‘I am so proud of you.’” Morbitzer said. “In my 16-year career, I have told hundreds of students that I am proud of them. It was the first time that a former student said those words to me.” In the 11 years Morbitzer has coached volleyball with Hamilton Township, she has had seven players experience their mothers’ battles with breast cancer. This motivated her to raise an incredible $95,027 for the Columbus Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure through Race registrations, pledges,Volley for the Cure events and other donations. “Every year I learn of more students who are affected by breast cancer,” Morbitzer said. “I will do everything I can for the rest of my career to get students involved in the fight against breast cancer. I will continue to encourage students to participate in the Race for the Cure every year...now and for the rest of their lives...or better yet, until there is a cure.” Each year, Morbitzer not only organizes a team to be in the race, but another 200 volunteers at the start line. Her group even choreographed a dance they taught to breast cancer survivors and then performed at the Survivor Ceremony on Race day. She says her students have a great time during the race, but do remember what is important, the survivors. “When the survivors come through those State House doors [at the Survivor Ceremony], I will look around and I will see several students in tears,” Morbitzer said, “It is during those moments when I have realized that my students get it. They understand why they are there and realize that they are a part of something amazing.” Under Morbitzer’s tireless direction, every year a new group of students becomes engaged in the breast cancer cause not only at Hamilton Township, but in Central Ohio, as she provides advice and suggestions to other area high schools for forming Race teams and planning Volley for the Cure events. As Outstanding Individual Volunteer of the Year, Morbitzer shares this advice for those participating in their first Race for the Cure: “You may have seen footage of the race on TV or looked at pictures in the paper, but you cannot truly understand what it is like until you have participated in the race. It is an experience like no other. To think that over 50,000
