Winery seeks OK to erect large tent By BRITANY BYERS ThisWeek Community Newspapers

The April 11 Canal Winchester Planning and Zoning Commission meeting focused on one topic: the Hidden Lakes Vineyards and Winery on Winchester Pike. Owner Damon Pfeifer is seek-

ing a variance to the village zoning code to allow an accessory structure — a 30-foot by 36-foot tent — to be located within the rear and side yard setbacks at the winery. He also filed a preliminary development plan for 12 additional parking spaces. The commission voted to table action on both applications until

the May 9 meeting, but not before an hour’s worth of discussion, most of which focused on Pfeifer’s request to keep the tent erected on winery property for most of the summer. “We need the parking to accommodate the tent for small weddings, banquets and family reunions,” Pfeifer said.

Andrew Dutton, planning and zoning administrator, pointed out that the parking spaces on the plan do not reflect the correct angles and the width for the drive lane is only 12 feet. The existing 12-foot private drive that spans the length of the parking lot needs to be 18 feet wide so a car can safely back out,

he said. Pfeifer said it’s “absolutely not a problem” to comply with the parking requirements and the planning commission’s request for him to submit a new drawing. The majority of Monday’s discussion focused on the proposed “accessory structure” — the large tent.

According to Pfeifer, it costs $1,500 to rent a tent for an event on this property. Currently, a permit is required for each tent larger than 10 feet by 10 feet. Dutton said the permits can allow the use of the tents for a weekend to three days. See WINERY, page A2

Scouts preparing for April 16 food drive By BRITANY BYERS ThisWeek Community Newspapers Organizers and participants in this year’s Scouting for Food project hope to surpass last year’s efforts in collecting items for the Canal Winchester Food Pantry. Members of Cub Scout Pack 103, Boy Scout Troop 103 and the Girl Scouts of Canal Winchester will conduct the fifth annual food drive from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 16.

Nearly 100 volunteers will canvass village neighborhoods for donations of nonperishable food items, personal care items and cash. All donations will benefit the Canal Winchester Food Pantry, which serves families in need in Canal Winchester, Lithopolis and Carroll. “This is probably our No. 1 community event that we’ve done throughout the year,” said Thomas Obert, Pack 103 Cubmaster. “It benefits so many people See LOCAL SCOUTS, page A2

When we’ve done this in the past, we’ve had such great success with it that it’s typical for the pantry to be full. We stock the shelves.

The Canal Winchester Board of Education voted unanimously last week to refuse Ohio School Facilities Commission (OSFC) funding and indefinitely delay several construction projects. The OSFC had offered the district $17.5 million to be used for building projects, treasurer Joyce Boyer said. In addition, Superintendent Kim MillerSmith reported at an April 5 special board meeting that the OSFC had notified the district that based on its current ranking in the commission’s Expedited Local Partnership Program, Canal Winchester was in line to receive an additional $2.2million credit toward building projects. Those included a new pre-kindergarten/kindergarten building, an addition to Canal Winchester Middle School and renovations to Canal Winchester High School. “It’s their opinion that we can build those two buildings without having to ask the voters for any money,” Miller-Smith said. However, the OSFC’s funding offer would require the district to pass a 0.5-mill maintenance levy in 2012. Board members said they believe the community would be unlikely to support the maintenance levy, especially since the district is asking voters to renew a three-year, $6.4-million emergency levy on May 3. “To me, the deal-breaker is going to the voters with a half-mill levy when we’re struggling to pay the bills now,” board member David Brobst said. “I think this is the wrong time to do it.” Boyer pointed out that although the district did not plan to hire additional staff if the building projects went forward, the new facilities would require See BOARD, page A3

Good Friday procession ‘profound in its simplicity’ By BRITANY BYERS ThisWeek Community Newspapers Canal Winchester’s annual Procession of the Cross, hosted by the Canal Winchester Ministerial Association, will begin at noon on Good Friday, April 22, at the Prentiss School House, 10 W. Oak St. Participants will process down High Street to Hope United Methodist Church, 83 E. Columbus St., where a

brief midday service will be held. The Rev. David Long-Higgins, president of the CWMA and co-pastor of David’s United Church of Christ, is looking forward to Good Friday’s events. “This cross walk procession … has been going on for easily 20 years,” he said. Its purpose is “to commemorate one of the holiest days in the Christian church year,” according to Long-Hig-

gins. “It’s a reminder, obviously, of the day of the death of Jesus.” In addition to the event’s religious significance, Long-Higgins is looking for the cross walk to interrupt the ordinary coming and going of everyday lives, in an intentional way. “We all get busy, don’t we, in our lives?” he asked. “You move from one thing to the next, quickly … and one weekend leads into the next week. Occasionally, it seems to me, it’s helpful

for us to have our lives interrupted in ways that make us stop and think of the big picture of our lives, however we may consider that.” Long-Higgins said he expects those who pass by the Good Friday procession will take a moment and let their lives be interrupted, as well. “As we go along the way, oftentimes, cars will pull over to the side of the road and pause while we walk by,” he said. At one time, participants would sing

hymns as they walked, but that became difficult since people become spread out during the walk, he said. This year, attendees will be accompanied by a solemn “drumbeat” of clapping as they walk, which Long-Higgins said will add something haunting or compelling to the procession. Long-Higgins said community turnout for the walk has depended on See FRIDAY, page A2
