Pierce Field
Final plan for project near completion By ALAN FROMAN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
The architectural firm working with the city of Grandview Heights on the design for a new multi-purpose building at Pierce Field is nearing completion of a final plan with cost estimates for the project.
Meyers and Associates has completed a preliminary design, but a few issues must still be resolved before the final plan is presented, parks and recreation director Sean Robey said. “We’re settling in on what the building is going to look like,” Robey said. The multi-purpose building will include a concession stand, storage facili-
ties and restrooms, and will replace the three buildings currently at the park, he said. Those buildings, all several decades old and not up to code, will be demolished. The new building will be located “more or less where the current restroom building sits, in the north central area of the park,” Robey said. “It will be between
the two existing ball diamonds.” One of the major issues still to be resolved is where the Ox Roast pit will be located, he said. “Where it is now would not work because it would be quite a haul for the (Bobcat) Boosters to carry all that beef from the pit to the new building, where they prepare and sell it during the Ox
Roast,” Robey said. The original idea was to move the pit just to the east of the new building, behind the backstop of the ball diamond, he said. Another possibility under consideration is to place the pit to the northwest of See PIERCE, page A2

Science Olympiad team qualifies for state By ALAN FROMAN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
The Grandview Heights Middle School Science Olympiad team finished first Saturday in the regional tournament it hosted. The victory qualifies the team for the state tournament on April 30 at Ohio State University. The middle school Science Olympiad features 23 events involving various aspects of science, including life, personal and social science; earth and space science; physical science and chemistry; technology and engineering; and
Team members include (from left) front row: Ross Carter, Kaleb Orr, Everett Stamm, Peter Beals, Maya Snyder, Noah Sturbois, Ben Fultz and Jackson Spainhoward; second row: Maya Bode, Elizabeth Bergmann, Chris Eberhart, Mindy Stoltz (coach) Caitlin Hyde, Lucas Smith, Rich Murray (coach) and J Hoerath (coach); third row: Mary Emma MacLeod, Zoe Wenk, Amelia Walsh, Allison Zawisa (coach), Richard Patterson (coach), David Ball, Eric Snyder (coach), Keith Orr (coach) and Pete See TEAM, page A5 Wenk (coach).
Grandview Heights students will start back to school a week earlier than usual next school year. The revised 2011-12 school year calendar, approved with a unanimous vote of the Grandview Heights Board of Education March 8 meeting, maintains the earlier start date proposed earlier this year by Superintendent Ed O’Reilly, but has a few changes from the calendar adopted in January. “It maintains exams before (winter) break, but it moves a couple things around,” O’Reilly said. Under the revised calendar, winter break will begin Dec. 22, which will be a professional development day for teachers, and students will return to school Jan. 5. One major change from the calendar approved in January is the last day of school. The last day of classes will be May 25, 2012, rather than May 30, ending school before Memorial Day. O’Reilly thanked Kids’ Club Director Courtney Price for agreeing to offer care Oct. 20-21, when no classes will be held because of a professional development day, and Nov. 23, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. He apologized for the administration’s role in failing to communicate the upcoming changes the public as well as he could have.
A closer look The revised 2011-12 school year calendar, approved with a unanimous vote of the Grandview Heights Board of Education March 8 meeting, maintains the earlier start date proposed earlier this year by Superintendent Ed O’Reilly, but has a few changes from the calendar adopted in January.
“Before I gave (the calendar) to the board, I would have liked the public to know a little bit more about that,” O’Reilly said, adding that staff, too, had a very short window of time to consider the proposed calendar before voting on it. Staff had adopted the 201112 calendar as originally proposed with a 60 to 40 percent vote. O’Reilly said at the Feb. 8 board meeting, when he presented the revised calendar, that he received e-mails and phone calls from parents with concerns about scheduling family holiday trips and vacations and arranging child care for the later end date of the original winter break. At the March 8 meeting, the superintendent expressed frustration at the number of e-mails he received from the same group all mentioning the same concerns. “Using the Mom’s Network to raise issues as a school district See CALENDAR, page A2

‘OtherSide’ helps students PIERCE think critically on issues
Continued from page A1

By ALAN FROMAN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
It is not just facts that are stubborn. Opinions can be stubborn as well, and once they form a viewpoint on an issue, many people no longer are interested in considering the other side. Students in Vince De Tillio’s seventh-grade social studies class at Edison Intermediate/Middle School have completed a project that forced them to consider whether their views on one of three real-world problems are based on facts or whether they were shaped by hearsay, misconception and/or stereotypes. The OtherSide Corporation project was a learning experience that simulated problem-solving, said De Tillio, who worked on the project with Edison technology coordinator Marc Alter. “At age 12 or 13, kids tend to have similar viewpoints,” he said. “We wanted the students to first identify what their opinion on an issue was, then work backwards and research to find out where their opinions came from and whether other perspectives might change their views.” The simulated OtherSide Corporation is a firm that researches and develops solutions for complicated social issues. The company asked the Edison students to participate in its effort by researching their opinions and reporting what they discovered. Students could choose one of three topics: poverty, illegal immigration and religious diversity. “We asked them to choose a topic they were curious about or had a strong opinion about,” De Tillio said. The OtherSide Corporation was in regular contact with the students, sending email messages and giving them assignments as part of the project. “We were really impressed with the thought and self-examination the kids put into this,” De Tillio said. “The project involved a lot of critical thinking and problem solving.” As part of the project, each student created a podcast to summarize their research and what they

learned about their issue of choice and their own opinions about the issue. The podcasts are being added several at a time and can be accessed at http://web.me.com/eimstech/otherside/Home.html. Visitors to the website can download the podcasts to iTunes, De Tillio said. Courtney Wilson said her opinion about poverty didn’t change after her research, but she ended up with a better understanding of some of the factors that can bring hard times to families. “I still think it’s a big issue that we need to be doing more about in this country,” she said. Elizabeth Bergmann also chose poverty as her issue. “When I started I thought poverty is usually not the person’s fault,” she said, and that view was not changed by her research. “I was surprised to find out that one of 12 kids in our country is living in poverty,” Bergmann said. “I never would have thought it was that many.” For her podcast, Bergmann assumed the character of a person
whose family had only recently slipped into poverty. “It’s sort of, ‘this is how my life used to be, and this is how it is now,’” she said. Her research has increased her awareness and empathy for the poor and made her realize there are many reasons why people fall on hard times, Bergmann said. Isiah Lloyd chose illegal immigration for his project because the issue is so much in the news. “I wanted to learn more about it and try to find out why people wouldn’t just go through the legal process to immigrate to this country,” he said. What he found was that it is hard to get a visa or green card, Lloyd said. “I saw that the Mexican government doesn’t do a lot for its people,” he said. “People can find jobs here and get an education, so they figure it’s worth it to come over illegally.” The path to immigration should be made easier, Lloyd said, and he supports the “Dream Act,” which would provide conditional permanent residency to students who arrived illegally in the U.S. as minors, graduated from high school and complete two years in the military or two years at a fouryear college or university. Lloyd said he enjoyed the OtherSide project. “It was very interesting,” he said. “It allowed us to use technology in a way that makes school more fun.”

the new building, nearer to Hilo Lane, Robey said. “There are pros and cons of both suggestions,” he said. “We’re still getting input from the Boosters.” The final cost of the project is still to be determined, but should be close to the $450,000 budget that was stated when the city began seeking bids from architectural firms for the design, Robey said. The new building will also be designed to meet the LEED green building certification system, which will add a bit to the cost, he said. The project will partly be funded with revenue from the additional 0.25 in available inside millage the city is now collecting and from the parks department’s share of the 3 percent bed tax now being paid by the Hyatt Place hotel in the Grandview Yard development, Robey said. Other funding options the city may consider include seeking a loan or a bond, he said. Work on the project would be completed between the end of the Ox Roast in September and the beginning of the girls
softball season in mid-March, but it is uncertain whether the project might be able to start later this year or in 2012, Robey said. Another Pierce Field project will be completed this spring. The city is accepting sealed bids until noon Friday for a project to install accessible playground equipment at Pierce Field. While much of the playground equipment at Pierce Field will remain, the new pieces will replace the older components. The new equipment will include at least 15 elevated play components and seven groundlevel components. A rubberized surface would also be installed. The bids will be open on Friday and the goal is to have contracts in place within a couple of weeks, Robey said. The playground project is expected to be completed by June, he said. The city has received a $43,114 grant from the Columbus Foundation’s Harry C. Coyle Fund for the project. The city will provide matching funds of up to $32,845.
is not necessarily effective,” he said. “I answered every one of those e-mails, and I’m happy to do so … but face-to-face communication is much more effective.” O’Reilly said he would be happy to attend PTO meetings to discuss the calendar changes. In other business March 8, the board agreed to add a new administrative position — technology integration specialist team leader. The district’s technology director, who was also in charge of network administration, had previously filled the role. The district hired Brad Pettit as the new network administrator in July 2010. The new position will oversee the district’s three technology integration specialists. “What have one at each building, but no one is overseeing K12,” O’Reilly said. Salary for the new position has yet to be decided, treasurer Tammy Rizzo said. The next board of education meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 12 in the Brotherhood of the Rooks Media Center at Grandview Heights High School, 1587 W. Third Ave. www.ThisWeekNews.com

The spread is a common event for Grandview parents and students. This image shows pages from the “Spreads & Entertainment” section of GHHS graduate Alleyne Higgs’ 1922 Memory Book. Eighty-nine years ago student social activities were much more formal by today’s standards. The handwritten invitation and place cards are for a party held at the Williams’ residence on Oct. 25, 1921. Notations in the margin indicate that the 12 girls that were invited “had a wonderful supper and played guessing games all evening and were home by 9:30.” It is interesting to note that the guest lists for all of the parties recorded by Alleyne her senior year showed that none were co-ed. Also note the two-cent stamp on the invitation envelope.

Nonunion member supports union rights To the editor: I would like to add my voice to the supporters of Ohio’s Public Employees’ Unions. Although I was not a member of a union at Ohio State University Hospitals, I was employed as a health care professional (registered dietitian) who worked hand in hand with them for 23 years. I found that in many of their negotiations, any benefit they worked for, eventually was rewarded to the professional staff. I watched staff nurses being mandated to work
a 12-hour shift after having just completed eight hours of stressful, exhausting work, keeping people alive. This kind of management force could only be combatted by a show of unity within their profession. I do feel that the unions have served not just their members, but other workers, as we know “a rising tide lifts all boats equally.”

Inaction on federal spending, national debt unacceptable Astronomical government spending over the past years has pushed our national debt to more than $14-trillion and counting. My daughter, Sarah, is over a year old and when she was born, her share of the national debt was $35,000. Today, it is around $45,000. This is alarming, and Congress must start making the tough decisions on spending so we can provide our children with a better future. Many federal programs have received funding increases over the last several years that outpaced both inflation and the growth of the American family budget. In fact, over the past two years, regular non-defense, discretionary funding has increased by 24 percent, while the stimulus bill alone cost around $821-billion. This spending spree is unacceptable and unsustainable. Across Ohio and the nation, families prioritize their own budgets to make ends meet and they should expect no less of Congress. We did not land in this spending crisis overnight and we will not turn around it around overnight; however, vote by vote, Congress can reduce the out-of-control spending and debt. The U.S. House of Representatives has already moved forward in reducing government spending in a number of ways. It was important that the first step in putting the nation’s fiscal house in order was to start by cutting our own office budgets by 5 percent, for a savings of around $35.2-million. Then in January, we voted to repeal the health care law, which would cut new spending by $2.6trillion over 10 years and reduce the deficit by $700-billion. Furthermore, I joined my colleagues in cutting $100-billion from the budget for the rest of fiscal year 2011, which goes through September of this year. Now that it has passed the House, the budget for the rest of this fiscal year is now under consideration by the U.S. Senate. Lastly, I voluntarily cut my own salary by 5 percent and each month, I return that amount to the U.S Treasury to go toward paying off the national debt. These are just the first steps in the process of turning around our nation’s spending and debt crisis. As Speaker Boehner recently announced, the next step will be entitlement reform. When address-
ing this issue, we need to ensure that promises made are promises kept and those who are reliant on these proREP. STEVE grams today are not adSTIVERS versely impacted. However, we need to make certain that these programs are not just around for our parents or ourselves but that they are still around for our children and grandchildren. The longer we put off reform of these programs, the harder it will be to fix down the road. Republicans and Democrats need to work together for Congress to make any progress on this issue. I look forward to having an open and honest conversation with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle on entitlement reform in the coming months.
If we want to give our children a brighter future where they are not buried under a mountain of debt, then we need to learn to live within our means today. That is why this Congress has made reducing government spending a priority and we will continue to move forward with our commitment to restore fiscal responsibility to our country. ing editor and sports editor, and Sandy Wallace, news editor. “I came to ThisWeek from a small daily, Ben Cason and it took some time for me to get used to the different pace and schedule of weekly papers,” Wallace said. “But Ben’s vision for the papers was very clear. It was all about better reporting, better editing, better writing. For Ben, content is key, regardless of whether it’s in print or online. “It will be very strange to walk in the newsroom on March 21 and know Ben won’t be there,” she said. “We’re losing a wealth of experience and institutional knowledge — but I think I can safely say that Ben’s influence will continue to be felt for a long time.” “Ben came to ThisWeek three months before me,” Cochran said. “Soon after I started, he explained his plan for improving the papers, and it’s a vision he has followed ever since and one that will continue. The success we’ve had at ThisWeek is a credit to Ben and his vision. He knew what it took to be a successful newspaper and led us there. “He is a leader, a mentor and, most importantly, a friend. He
More importantly, general manager Stephen Zonars said, Cason won the loyalty of hundreds of thousands of central Ohio readers. “Ben has been the heartbeat of ThisWeek Community Newspapers for 18 years, and his contributions are immeasurable,” Zonars said. “On his watch, the readership of our papers has grown by more than 200,000 people, which may be the most honest reflection of how valuable the public finds our coverage, which is the product of Ben’s leadership in the newsroom.” Zonars said Cason’s legacy is the team of journalists he has assembled at ThisWeek. “We are indebted to Ben for attracting bright and passionate reporters and editors who share his love of community news and sports, and to Ben’s high personal standards for quality, objective and, above all, accurate reporting,” he said. “No one checks more facts than Ben. Ben’s legacy will be that his brand of journalism will live on through our staff because Ben showed them the way as he coached, mentored and nurtured them. Ben leaves us in good hands.” Two of Cason’s first hires after he arrived at ThisWeek were Lee Cochran, now assistant manag-
will be missed by our readers and our newsroom.” After graduating from the University of Florida, Cason took a job at The St. Petersburg Times, where he met his wife, Carol. Cason was news editor at The Washington Post during the Watergate scandal that eventually toppled President Richard Nixon. He said the Watergate episode was one of the most interesting times in his career. As news editor of The Post during that era, he put together many of the paper’s historic front pages. Cason said working for newspapers that were family-owned has been important to him. “I feel fortunate to have worked for family-run operations almost my entire career — the Wolfe family in Columbus, the Graham family at The Washington Post and Nelson Poynter at The St. Petersburg Times,” Cason said. “Journalism is almost always better when it’s run by families who live in the communities than by faceless large newspaper chains.” Cason said he remains a proponent of community journalism. “I think community journalism is the future of journalism,” he said. The Casons are the parents of two sons: Alexander lives in Charlotte, N.C.; David, his wife, Julie, and their two sons live in Worthington.

Earlier this year, the team finished in third place in an invitational tournament “against what was probably the second strongest field we’ve faced,” said Mindy Stoltz, one of the volunteers who coach the Grandview team. The team that finished second in the state tournament last year won the invitational tournament, she said.
Science Olympiad teams are made up of students in sixth through ninth grades. What’s amazing about the Grandview team, coach J Hoerath said, is that it is so young. “We only have three ninthgraders and a lot of the teams we face, especially from the larger schools, have a lot more ninthgraders on their teams,” he said. The Grandview team succeeds in part because of the students’ enthusiasm and dedication, Hoerath said. “Our kids all practice for multiple events, four or five events and some of them are here three or four days a week for practice,” he said. An experienced team of coaches, most of whom have been volunteering for Science Olympiad for years, is another key factor for success, Hoerath said. “Our goal is to get these kids to really enjoy science and see that it can be fun,” he said. “They love to compete.” Students compete in events in pairs, Stoltz said, and one of the benefits of Science Olympiad is learning to work with others.
Walsh said she finds Science Olympiad interesting and fun. “I like being able to solve problems and being able to use my own ideas to solve them,” she said. Her favorite event is Can’t Judge a Powder, which involves mixing a mystery powder with other substances and observing what happens. Sixth-grader Maddie Taylor said she is enjoying her first year of Science Olympiad. “I like science a lot,” she said. “It’s fun because you get to do activities and experiments. You don’t have to just sit there, like in math.” Her favorite event is Tower, in which participants make a tower out of light wood and try to pour as much sand as possible into it. “You fill it as much as you can,” Taylor said. “It’s exciting to see if it holds.” While Science Olympiad is fun, it also helps prepare one for science class in school, Smith said. “A lot of times, you’ve already learned the material through Science Olympiad,” he said. “The teacher will ask, ‘how did you know that?’‘Science Olympiad.’”

Late Night Slice expands to include Clintonvile store By KEVIN PARKS ThisWeek Community Newspapers
After Mike Sorboro, his friends and his employees had finished transforming a small shack in a defunct Short North used car lot into the smallest pizza place in all of Columbus, what might have seemed like a fatal flaw in their little business venture came to light. “I literally had never made pizza before in my life,” Sorboro said. Oops. Today, Mikey’s Late Night Slice has three “brick and mortar” locations, the newest of which, at 15 E. Duncan St., is intended to serve not only Olde North Columbus but also Clintonville. It was the closest available space he could find, Sorboro said, in response to the oft-repeated question from customers, “When are you going to open in Clintonville?” Mikey’s Late Night Slice is definitely not some corporate franchise operation, as the menu at the East Duncan Street store makes obvious. A hummus platter and hummus pita, at $5 and $4, respectively, appear under the heading “Rabbit Food.” The list of beverages for sale is proudly proclaimed to be “24 flavors of Faygo.” The “Special Items” include something called The Pizza Dog: “a hot dog stuffed with pepperoni served in a slice of pizza as the bun!” It is further described as “a healthy alternative to a cup of melted butter.” And then, in the listings for “Fried Stuff,” there is the Fried Pizza at $4 a serving, which is “Your choice of sliced battered and deep-fried.” “Yeah,” the menu adds, “we went there.” In addition to the original Late

Night Slice store in the 138square-foot shack in the Short North, the second location inside Woodlands Tavern, the former Thirsty Ear on West Third Avenue, and the East Duncan Street spot, Late Night Slice has a fourth location: A big panel van with a complete pizza kitchen inside. On the outside customers are advised: “Pay. Eat. Leave.” The Facebook page for the business describes it as “The Amy Winehouse of Columbus Pizza joints.” “We really had no idea what we were doing,” Sorboro said. “It was such a successful train wreck.” Actually, all that irreverence should not be too surprising, considering that the 30-year-old entrepreneur got the idea for his enter-
prise from a bunch of drunks. William Michael Sorboro was born in Akron but has lived in Columbus for much of the past 11 years. He followed some friends who enrolled at Ohio State, and took some classes there himself as well as at practically every other institution of higher learning in the city, from Columbus State to Hondros College. Sorboro spent eight years working as a disc jockey, much of the time in Columbus but also in New York, Florida, South Carolina and Las Vegas. It was while he was working in Las Vegas, Sorboro said, that he went to San Diego on vacation and saw people riding in pedicabs, a sort of cross between a rickshaw and a bicycle.
Sorboro is nothing if not a “Why not?” sort of a guy, so he came back to Columbus, bought five bicycle taxis with his nowmanaging partner Jason Biundi and began offering rides to people attending festivals in the Short North area and coming out of the bars and restaurants in the Short North and Arena District. “It was a good time to have them because the economy wasn’t bad yet,” Sorboro said. “People really latched onto it.” Aside from providing rides for people no longer able to do that much walking on their own, Sorboro said that Environmentally Conscious Transportation Pedicabs are of serve to those parked too far away to walk but not far enough to justify taking a cab.
Soroboro’s original five pedicabs are still in operation, he said, and Columbus now has a total of 14 of them. One of the first things pedicab customers asked him after coming out of this or that establishment at closing time, Sorboro said, was “Where’s the food?” and “Where can I get a slice of pizza?” “You just hear it enough and you think, ‘OK, where is the pizza by the slice?’ ” Sorboro said last week as he was opening the Duncan Street store for business. The abandoned shack at the old car lot next the Bodega on North High Street, a kind of lean-to that looks as if it might lean-fro at any minute, was available from Sorboro’s landlord, so Columbus Public Health officials were asked to
determine if it was feasible to create pizzas in such confined space. It was, Sorboro said, so he began plowing money from his pedicab earnings into sinks and spatulas and a pizza oven. Mikey’s Late Night Slice opened for business on July 4, 2009, at first using pizza dough from another parlor, Sorboro said. Because of the volume of customers wanting a $3 slice of pie or maybe two or three, they soon had to start making their own. “The volume that we do out of that little shack is just breathtaking,” Sorboro said. The hours fit the name: 8 p.m. to at least 3 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 p.m. to at least 4 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. “You don’t close until everybody’s fed,” Sorboro said he tells his employees. The Woodlands Tavern operation opened in August of last year after some friends of Sorboro’s got to talking to the manager of what had been the Thirsty Ear. The place had a kitchen, but the new owners had no desire to go into the food end of things, Sorboro said. The newest venue will be open from 5 p.m. to, again, at least 3 a.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 p.m. to, you guessed it, at least 4 a.m. Friday and Saturday. That’s subject to change, Sorboro said. The owner of Mikey’s Late Night Slice said that he doesn’t intend to go the franchise route and has “not plans for world domination.” He just wants to keep making pizzas for people who really, really, really crave a slice, late at night. Or early in the morning, for that matter. “I’m having a blast doing it,” Sorboro said. “It’s fun seeing it take off. It is really cool to watch this tiny little experiment.” kparks@thisweeknews.com
Mills James expands capacity, but without adding to building By GARY BUDZAK ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Changes in technology have resulted in a local media company expanding its production facilities without expanding its building. Mills James Creative Media, based at 3545 Fishinger Blvd., recently announced the construction of a new production studio, two new video post-production suites, and a series of HD video and transmission upgrades. Construction began last November. “In the last six to nine months, there’s been a lot of expansion in electronic media,” said Mills James spokesman Scott
Rankin. “There are a couple of reasons for that. The whole world is migrating over to high definition, and more clients needed services done in high def. “Some of that was driven by changes going on in communications technology, especially with the growth of online video,” he said. “More people are carrying smart phones, the iPad is becoming a big deal, and with more people and companies using mobile video, there’s just more work to be done in marketing and advertising.” “That increasing business volume means we needed to respond with additional studio and post-production capacity as well as more powerful media tools,”

Ken Mills, president, said in a statement. “Most meetings and corporate events depend on large-image projection for videos and presentations, and we’ve upgraded our technology systems to the latest generation of high definition,” said CEO Cameron James. Mills James was founded in 1984 and built its production facility in the Mill Run business district in 1990. That facility has had two studios, even when the building was doubled in 1996. Rankin said the new Studio C was designed for live news feeds for corporations and broadcast networks. For example, when Kirk Herbstreit needs to appear on ESPN, he’s at Mills James instead of
going to ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn. (Herbstreit recently announced that he is moving to Nashville.) “It wasn’t done just for Kirk, but there are other clients who need that type of capability to either go live or do a product shot that doesn’t involve a big studio setup,” Rankin said. The studio was built in a space in the building that was originally a media vault, where tapes and DVDs were permanently stored for clients. “Today, a lot of that stuff is not stored on tape or disc — it’s stored to hard drives and computer memory,” Rankin said. Another improvement was adding two more video editing suites for a total of
12. “With 12 suites, we’re configured for every different type of editorial need,” said Scott Lanum, vice president of Teleproduction Services. “TV spots, corporate media, web-based video, news, and broadcast television programming.” Rankin said the video server has also been upgraded to 56 terabytes, or more than twice the memory storage capacity of the IBM Watson supercomputer that won on the game show Jeopardy! recently. “Not that it’s going to go on Jeopardy! or supposed be smart,” he said. “It’s just supposed to be big and store a lot of stuff.” gbudzak@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekNews.com

Bobcat Award winner: ‘I’m just doing my job’ By ALAN FROMAN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
When Director of Curriculum Katie Maxfield telephoned to tell Bret Sinclair he was named as a recipient of the Tri-Village Rotary Bobcat Award, he found it hard to believe. “My feeling is, I get paid for being a crossing guard. I’m just doing my job,” Sinclair said. “I had heard about the award, but I had no idea that I would even be considered for it.” Sinclair was honored at the March 8 school board meeting along with Stevenson literacy support staff member Karen Lorenz as the latest recipients of the Bobcat Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions by school district employees, community members and families. Sinclair serves as crossing guard each morning at the intersection of First and Oxley and each afternoon at Northwest and Oxley. His reward, he said, is getting to know the students he helps each day as they walk to and

from Stevenson Elementary. “Oh yeah, the kids are great,” Sinclair said. “Grandview is a small town, so you get to know most of the kids. I try to learn as many names as I can. Working as a crossing guard “is a chance to serve,” Sinclair said. “I’m sure it’s a comfort for parents who aren’t able to walk with or drive their child to school to know someone is looking out for them and helping to keep them safe,” he said. Most of the time, “99 times out of 100,” students cross the
street in a safe and proper manner, Sinclair said. “To be honest, it’s the parents you have to watch out for,” he said with a chuckle. Sinclair does not just serve Stevenson as a crossing guard. He also raises and lowers the flag at the school each day, a job that used to be done by older students before the school was consolidated into a K-3 building. “It’s the least I can do when you consider all our soldiers who are serving us and putting themselves in harm’s way,” Sinclair said. He never tires of being a crossing guard, he said. “You know, it’s only 10 or 15 minutes in morning and 10 minutes in the afternoon,” Sinclair said. “The rain and snow never bothers me. The biggest problem is the heat. It can get pretty hot out there sometimes. “It’s a blessing,” he said about his crossing guard duties. “The parents in Grandview do a wonderful job with their kids,” he said. “They really are such great kids. They make it fun.”

Vino Vino in Grandview; so nice they named it twice When I first wrote about Vino Vino around five years ago, the little Grandview hub had a lot of buzz about it. Well, frankly, I hadn’t heard much Vino Vino talk lately. After a few recent visits, I think I know why: Its many patrons are trying to keep this terrific place (and its brashly flavored, artfully plated dishes sold at really great prices) all to themselves. Comfy, urbane, sophisticated, casual — these were the adjectives that popped into my brain as Brazilian music played (a much appreciated Vino Vino mainstay) and I perused the lengthy vino list. The wine-named place has a few flights with grinning descriptions, a ton of bottles that range from an unoaked Chilean chard (Cousino Macal, $22) to a big Barolo (Marcarini, $80) and lots of foodfriendly juice in between. Salads are certainly solid here. The Charleston ($6) is one of those walnut and Maytag blue cheese numbers, but nicely done — with earthy julienned veggies and a lightly applied bright vinai-

It’s like a spicy and creamy version minus the anchovy but plus sweet corn kernels and a hunk of fresh avocado. Before moving on, I should mention that the last salad — along with a bunch of other goodies — are available in smaller portions for $3 (some are $4) during Vino Vino’s spectacular happy hour, which is one of the best in town. Other happy hour highlights include: a killer Fish Taco (get the lettuce wrap option) that’s bold, huge and colorful and easily rivals any in the city; a very nifty crab cake actually packed with crab, nicely butter-browned and offering a flattering hint of mustard; a super-juicy sirloin and portobello slider; and an excel-

Two large logs of juicy boneless breast meat were pistachioed and bread crumbed and presented in crusty jackets. They were accompanied by dense and garlicky smashed redskins, a nice veggie medley starring broccoli and a sweet Thai-like chili sauce. The Roasted Salmon ($15) was a platefilling big fillet of grill-marked pink fish roused into specialness by a butter sauce with an intense lemon zestiness. Jasmine rice was on the side for sopping up the attention-demanding sauce. A dense but not super heavy NYCstyle cheesecake ($6) was good on its own, but even better with its accessories — nuts, fruit, syrup and cinnamon.
Molten in the middle, the tangy cheese had a highly attractive, crackly brown crust. Cutting the richness were an herby, chunky and addictive marinara sauce plus a little balsamic-drizzled salad. Northland welcomes Nigerian restaurant on Cleveland Ave. Esther Ajiboye thinks Columbus is ready for something many residents rarely, if ever, have tried: Nigerian cuisine. Ajiboye and her husband Olawale have opened Intercontinental Restaurant, a 30-seat eatery in the Northland area. Opening day two weeks ago, the restaurant served 200 customers. Since then, a steady stream of diners has flowed
through Intercontinental, supping on such dishes as plantains with spinach, goat meat with mixed okra stew and fish pepper soup. “We’ve been very busy,” Mrs. Ajiboye said. The reason, she suspects, is the
paucity of Nigerian restaurants in the region. In fact, she claims that Intercontinental, 5777 Cleveland Ave., is the only one in the state. Also in its favor are the healthful aspects of the cuisine — nothing is deep-fried — and the price. All meals start out at $7.99. Prices go up if customers ask for extra portions. “We give you what will fill you up,” she said. “We don’t ration

it.” Both Ajiboyes are from the western part of Nigeria, where each owned a restaurant. “Cooking brought us together,” Mrs. Ajiboye said. “Food brought us together.” “This is the first time we are working together,” her husband said. “I enjoy it. She’s a good cook.” Columbus is no stranger to regional African cuisines, offering a wide variety of styles: Figs Café (a mix of Ghanaian and Western fare), Blue Nile (Ethiopian) and Solay Bistro (Somali), for example. Mr. Ajiboye said many of the restaurant’s West African dishes, such as jollof rice, are shared throughout most of the continent. One of the most popular dishes at Intercontinental is moi moi, made from a base of black-eyed peas that are soaked, peeled, cooked and pureed, and seasoned with a variety of ingredients. After it is boiled in foil and firms up into a loaf, the moi moi is cut into pieces to be eaten on their own or served with meat. Another big seller is egusi soup, made of melon seeds, and often served with a ball of pounded yam, where diners peel off pieces of the globe and dip it into the soup as they eat. Mrs. Ajiboye said the spice level of the dishes is mild and suited to most diners but there is a
habanero salsa served tableside for those who want a spicy condiment. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner hours daily. For more information, call 614-843-5665. Spain Restaurant is opening a second site in Lewis Center. The Spanish eatery, a Northland staple for 12 years, will take over the site most recently occupied by Beebs Deli, 76 Powell Road.
The 3,500-square-foot building, which will seat around 100 people, is just west of U.S. Route 23. The menu and pricing structure will remain largely unchanged, said general manager Luis Aguilar. A specific opening date is not certain, but it should be ready within two months. He said the plan is to keep the current site at 888 E. DublinGranville Road and have a less formal menu.

‘Old Barn’ remains Young at heart We are in the final days of one of my favorite times of the year — the district and regional boys basketball tournaments in the Fairgrounds Coliseum. Over the 16 years that I have written for ThisWeek Community Newspapers and the 43 years that I have been part of the media covering these exciting games, I have talked about these special days that LARRY those of us who love LARSON these events get to spend together for three or four weeks. It is a homecoming for a group of individuals who work very hard to make these games enjoyable for the teams, coaches and fans. Of these individuals, none has worked harder for the past two decades than tournament director Ralph Young, who is retiring after the games this weekend. Wrestling
Davidson’s Delande named Super 12 captain By JEREMY STEWART ThisWeek Community Newspapers
By Eric George/ThisWeek
Chase Delande went 46-2 this season, capped with the Division I state title at 145 pounds.
Although Chase Delande of the Hilliard Davidson High School wrestling team won the Division I state title at 145 pounds, he’s still going to be treated like the younger brother of Bo and Spencer. Both Bo Delande, a 2007 Davidson graduate, and Spencer Delande, a 2009 graduate, were state qualifiers as seniors, but neither made the kind of run the youngest Delande did at the state tournament March 3-5 at Ohio State. Chase went 4-0, defeating Massillon Perry’s Tanner Lemon 9-4 in the championship match. Although neither of his older brothers won a state title, they had an influence on Chase getting one.
“Being the youngest brother, they would beat up on me sometimes,” said Chase, who has been named captain of the 2010-11 ThisWeek Super 12 wrestling team. “I think that’s what helped me a lot. It made me mentally stronger. I could take a beating.” Spencer often came to the practice room this season to help train his younger brother. With Spencer having a nearly 50-pound weight advantage, Chase had a difficult time trying to control his brother. And for Chase, control was what it was all about. “He’s great at turning people over,” coach Dominic DiSabato said. “He’s a strong kid even though he may not look like it. He’s tough. He’s really physical and he has that football player mentality where he’s

The junior finished the season 462. His only losses were to Mentor Lake Catholic’s Matt Fee at the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Holiday Tournament, which concluded Dec. 30. After that tournament, Delande was unbeatable. He swept through
the OCC-Central Division dual matches, defeated Grove City’s Robert Coles 14-0 to win the Marysville sectional title Feb. 19 and defeated Olentangy Liberty’s Ethan Snyder 10-4 to win a district title Feb. 26. The state title gave Delande a state championship in two sports. He was a cornerback for the Davidson football team when it won the Division I state title in 2009. “In wrestling, it’s more of a thrill,” Delande said of winning a state championship. “In football, it’s a long game, two hours. In wrestling, it’s six minutes and all eyes are on you.” •OTHER FIRST-TEAMERS — Al Caserta (Olentangy, Sr., 130 See SUPER 12, page B3

Satterthwaite finished fourth at the district meet, which concluded Feb. 26 at Coshocton, as the top four in each weight class advanced to state. Senior Alex Minnillo competed at district at 145, but went 1-2. He finished 29-14 overall. The Bobcats were 30th of 53 teams scoring at district with 18 points. Nelsonville-York (129) won the title. Minnillo and Satterthwaite were both fourth in the Madison Plains sectional, which concluded Feb. 19. The top four in each weight class advanced to district. Grandview finished 10th (52) of 12 teams behind champion West Jefferson (254.5). Satterthwaite won a title in the MSL-Cardinal duals that concluded Feb. 12 at Licking Heights. Also finishing second were junior David Kuruvilla (112), freshman David Lindemann (119), Minnillo, freshman Anthony Sagstetter (152) and sophomore Matt Kientz (189). The Bobcats finished third (2-2) of five teams in the league meet behind West Jefferson (4-0) and Licking Heights (3-1) and ahead of Liberty Union (1-3) and Harvest Prep (0-4). Grandview beat Liberty Union 47-36 and Harvest Prep 40-24 and lost to West Jefferson 66-9 and Licking Heights 34-30. Minnillo and Satterthwaite were the team’s lone seniors. “It was a tough year,” said coach Andy DiSabato, who completed his 25th season. “We knew we were going to be young, but we wanted to get both seniors to state. We got one (to state) and he placed (eighth), so I guess that’s pretty good.” In addition to Kientz, Kuruvilla, Lindemann and Sagstetter, expected back are sophomore C.J. Flowers (189) and freshmen Sam Callison (160), Cody Hofmaster (171), Owen Hopper (130) and A.J. Pinyerd (heavyweight). “We have to keep rebuilding,” DiSabato said. “We have a couple of kids coming up from middle school who could do pretty well. It still will be a lot of work.”

Tiffany Bauer, a 5-6 guard, was the fifth senior for the Bobcats. “These five kids were great for us,” said coach Steve Hall, who completed his 12th season. “Usually you try to get kids to come together and play as a team because usually it’s an allabout-me mentality, but not with this group. Commentary
Stephenson defends BYU’s strict student honor code Like many, Maggie Stephenson is curious to see how far the Brigham Young University men’s basketball team can advance in the NCAA tournament. The 2006 Pickerington High School Central and 2010 BYU graduate wonders how much of a run the Cougars can make without sophomore Brandon Davies, who has been suspended for the rest of the season. Davies, a 6-foot-9 center, was kicked off the team March 1 for violating BYU’s honor code by having premarital sex with his girlfriend. The university, located in Provo, Utah, is affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “When I first read about it, I
PAUL BATTERSON
felt bad for him,” said Stephenson, who had classes with Davies and was a student teacher at his former high school in Provo. “I can’t imagine
how he feels. “But when I heard all the negative things being said about BYU, it made me mad. I’ve heard people say, ‘Why would anyone want to play at BYU?’ I can tell you firsthand that playing for BYU was one of the best experiences of my life.”
Stephenson was a catcher and utility infielder for the Cougars softball team the past two years. Although she is not Mormon, she passionately defends her alma mater. And part of the reason why Stephenson, who is Catholic, said she enjoyed her time in Provo was because of BYU’s stringent honor code. Each BYU student — not just athletes — is asked to commit to nine principles. Among them: abstaining from tea, coffee, alcoholic beverages, tobacco and substance abuse, observing a dress code (no shorts above the knees and no midriff-revealing shirts) and grooming standards (no beards or mustaches), participating regularly in church
services and living a chaste and virtuous life. Students also have to receive an “Ecclesiastical endorsement” from their religious counselor and non-LDS students have to undergo an interview with the school’s chaplain before gaining admission. No one at BYU is above the honor code. Last year, running back Harvey Unga, BYU’s alltime leading rusher with 3,455 yards, and his girlfriend, Keilani Moeaki of the Cougars women’s basketball team, were suspended for the same violation as Davies. Stephenson was sent back to her dorm from a testing center because her shorts were too short.
“I never thought about the length of my shorts before I went there. I was always in cutoffs,” Stephenson said. “But when you’re out there, you’re not just making a commitment to yourself and to your team, but you’re making one to the whole community.” Stephenson said the honor code fosters a family atmosphere. “BYU is the first campus I’ve been on where I could walk up to any student, faculty or university personnel at any time
and ask for help and immediately receive it,” she said. “I never felt scared at night and always felt safe.” In a society where rules are often winked at but rarely followed, it’s comforting to know characteristics like honor and sacrifice are not only enforced but also might be making a comeback. pbatterson@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com
LARSON Continued from page B1 blessed to have had Nancy right by my side through all these years. She has been such a help to me. She has shared her honest opinion on things involving the tournament and has been so great in helping me remember to get all the little things done.” Much like the things I have written about the Fairgrounds and the thrills of the games played in this historic building, Young said it is the consistency that keeps these days so enjoyable. “You come back year after year and you
see the same people in the same places,” Young said. “I have had the benefit of having guys like Dave Siess and Steve Kull working in the same position for every year. I see the same people on press row and it even goes so far that I can look at certain seats in the stands and see the same fans in those seats. Can you imagine if those seats could talk? What stories they could tell. What a history they could send to us of all the things that have happened since the first state tournament was held here in 1923. Some people call this the ‘Old Barn’ and maybe that is what it is, but this ‘Old Barn’
has been a great place for me to work for a long time.” Thanks to Ralph and Nancy Young for making the Fairgrounds a great place to be for many years. There is no doubt that both will always be part of the high school basketball tournament family. They earned it. Best of life always. I’ll see you at the Fairgrounds. Larry Larson is a former athletics director at Grandview High School. He can be heard as “Mr. High School Sports” on WTVN 610 AM.
