Auto show presents the next generation of cars By REBECCA WALTERS Dispatch MeDia Group Attendees of the 2016 Columbus International Auto Show will be in the driver’s seat this year as the event will feature three ride-and-drive attractions designed to give folks a chance to try some new vehicles on for size while they browse. Each year, the auto show brings together — all under one roof — the latest and greatest vehicles all shined up and available for viewing in a no-sales-pressure, familyfriendly environment, said Marie Gilman, show manager for the Columbus International Auto Show. And this year, attendees will have the opportunity to test drive vehicles as well as be a passenger in an off-road simulation. Additionally, the public will get a sneak peek at the next-generation Acura NSX “supercar,” have a chance to see former Ohio State football star Braxton Miller, who will be signing autographs on Saturday, and check out some specially “wrapped” cars designed by Ohio State University design students. The hundreds of 2016 and 2017 vehicles all lined up in one place at one time is a great opportunity for people who are in the market for a car to see them up close and personal, said Bruce Daniels, this year’s auto show committee chairman. “The Columbus show is exciting because it is held in the spring, and people have spring fever. They are ready to get out and about and check out all of the new cars,” said

Daniels, who owns Honda Marysville, Performance Chrysler Jeep Dodge on Georgesville Road, Performance Chrysler Jeep Dodge in Delaware and Toyota Direct. Added Rhett Ricart of Ricart Automotive, “I suggest people bring a note pad and write down everything they like so they won’t forget.”

Try Them on for size

Three ride-and-drive attractions will give consumers the opportunity to test drive vehicles and see how well they perform, Gilman said. The first is the return of the RAM Truck Experience, which has been a huge draw the last several years of the show, she said. This takes place inside the show, where passengers can take a ride in a variety of RAM trucks that travel over lumps and bumps, logs, uneven terrain and a mini-mountain obstacle course of sorts that simulates an off-road experience. The second is the Toyota Drive Center, which takes place outside the convention center on the streets of Downtown Columbus. Beginning

The Ram Truck Experience gives passengers the chance to get a feel for how this truck handles over various types of terrain.

at the South Connector at the convention center, drivers can try out a Camry, an all-new Prius, a RAV4, a redesigned 2016 Tacoma and a Tundra. At the Subaru “Love Spring” Ride and Drive display area, people can sign up to drive five Subaru models, including a Legacy, Outback, Forester, Impreza and Crosstrek. “It’s a pretty cool opportunity,” said Gilman, adding that there’s no appointment necessary, but that participants must provide a valid driver’s license for the test drives. enTer To win The Central Ohio Honda Dealers will be giving away a 2016 Honda Civic, voted North American Car of the

letter From the ChaIrman

Welcome to the 2016 auto show On behalf of the Columbus Automobile Dealers Association and 2016 BRuCE dAniELS Auto Show chairman Committee, I extend to you a sincere welcome to the 2016 Columbus International Auto Show. On a weekend that is bookended by St. Patrick’s Day and the first day of spring, central Ohio will be experiencing a showcase of the latest and greatest in automotive style, performance and technology. As chairman of the 2016 Auto Show, I can’t say how excited I am to be a part of one of the biggest and best

shows we have put together. Our participating manufacturers and local auto dealers have worked hard to put together a stunning lineup of their newest models of cars, trucks, SUVs and even motorsports for you to see. This show is for automotive enthusiasts and car shoppers to enjoy with 2016 models on display, as well as prototypes and specialty vehicles. Some of these featured vehicles include the 2017 Acura NSX, 2017 Hyundai Elantra, 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2017 Buick Envision, 2016 Chevy Malibu and all sorts of highline beauties on display in our Dream Machines exhibit. The RAM Truck Experience, Subaru “Love Spring” Ride & Drive, and Toyota

Drive Center are all hosting ride-and-drive events for you to get behind the wheel and go for a spin. We also have an incredible display at the BestRide.com Art On Wheels Gallery, where Ohio State design students created impressive works of art for you to see come to life. You can even win a new set of wheels at the Auto Show! The Central Ohio Honda Dealers will be giving away an all-new 2016 Honda Civic, named North American Car of the Year, to one lucky attendee! On March 18, the Columbus Automobile Dealers Association and Dispatch Media Group will host our annual Charity Gala with proceeds benefitting the Alzheimer’s Association, Children’s Heart

Year, at the show. All you have to do is enter to win while you are browsing for cars at the show. For more details, visit columbusautoshow.com

ThaT’s a wrap One of the newest attractions to the show is the BestRide.com Art on Wheels Gallery. Given the theme of “Love Your City,” Ohio State University Department of Design students competed in a contest to wrap cars with whatever inspired them about the city of Columbus. Six models will be on display at the show, where attendees can vote for their favorite. (See story on Page 9 for more information.)

Trick my ride Of course, people come to the auto show for the cars, but they also want to check out all of the bells and whistles on those cars. At Accessory Avenue, a brand-new display area to this year’s show, attendees will have a chance to see the latest products and accessories that they can add to their cars, such as sun roofs, leather seats, entertainment systems and the like. There will also be a demonstration of a self-healing clear mask that prevents scratches and dents. (See story on page 14.)

The Columbus AuTomobile DeAlers AssoCiATion

Celebrating 101 years serving central Ohio Since 1915, the Columbus Automobile Dealers Association has served as a liaison for franchised new car dealers and the surrounding community. The association answers consumer inquiries, holds educational and legal seminars, monitors legislation, and tracks new and used vehicle registrations in Franklin County. The CADA also promotes dealership interests and charitable endeavors with its “Drive Columbus” feature in The Columbus Dispatch. The Columbus Automobile Dealers Association works diligently to actively promote a positive image for its members, their employees and the automotive industry. The 85 dealerships in the Greater Columbus area have a significant impact on the local economy. These dealerships sell more than 81,000 new vehicles per year, lending to retail sales of $3.3 billion. Although dealerships make up less than 5 percent of total retail establishments, dealerships contribute almost 20 percent of all retail sales in the Columbus area. Car dealers employ 5,400 employees and have a payroll of $250 million each year. The state of Ohio has more than $135 million in sales tax collected and paid that can be attributed to the Columbus franchised

2016 Columbus international auto show Committee automobile industry. The CADA not only makes substantial contributions to the economic strength of central Ohio through sales and employment, but many of the dealerships also make contributions to their local communities by donating time and financial resources to many different organizations. This year, the annual Auto Show Charity Gala will benefit the Central Ohio Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, Children’s Heart Foundation, The Childhood League Center, Flying Horse Farms, and Make-A-Wish Foundation. Membership with the CADA creates the opportunity to expand business markets through the Columbus International Auto Show, and it unifies a family of dealers and business people who are constantly striving for ways to broaden their horizons as salespersons, as business owners, and as members of the central Ohio community.

Huntington celebrates auto financing for generations Huntington entered 2016 celebrating 150 years of service, marked by an enduring commitment to community and continued passion for making it easy for Ohioans to get behind the wheel of their favorite vehicles, as it has for generations. The bank is now serving its ninth consecutive year as presenting sponsor of the Columbus International Auto Show. “While we take a lot of pride in serving the auto industry, central Ohio is also our home,” said Greg Swain, regional manager of Huntington’s auto finance division. “We’ve worked hard to give back to the community over the years and are committed to doing the right things for our customers. That includes delivering competitive rates and

great service on new and used vehicle financing.” The auto industry is poised for a seventh consecutive record year of growth following one of its most prolific sales years ever. Interest rates remain low, trade-in values high, and with a wide range of manufacturer incentives, an outstanding 2016 model year and the lowest gas prices we’ve seen in years, it’s still a great time to buy. With this in mind, Bruce Daniels, 2016 Auto Show Committee chair-

man for the Columbus Automobile Dealers Association, pointed to Huntington as a choice for consumer financing. “Huntington has continued to excel over the years with a growing commitment to serving dealers and their customers locally,” Daniels said. “They’ve been a tremendous community partner in helping the Columbus Auto Dealers Association bring one of the best auto shows in the Midwest to the Greater Columbus Convention Center.”

Serving the auto industry for more than 60 years, Huntington Auto Finance provides indirect new and used-vehicle lending and vehicle inventory financing to 3,800 dealerships in 20 states across the Midwest and New England. The team is prominent among lenders nationally, consistently delivering 70 percent of indirect loan decisions within three seconds or less, with 95 percent of all loan contracts processed the same day. “With the automotive landscape constantly changing, we’re aware of the many choices Central Ohioans have for auto financing,” says Swain. “Our thanks to the dealer and carbuying community for the continued trust they place in Huntington Auto Finance.”

Wrap it up

OSU design students offer fresh takes on car exteriors BY REBECCA WALTERS DISPATCH MEDIA GROUP Car wraps are used to protect the surface of a vehicle, and they are becoming increasingly popular as rolling advertisements for products and services, too. Attendees at the Columbus International Auto Show will get to see six wrapped vehicles that were designed by students from the Ohio State University Department of Design in the BestRide.com Art on Wheels Gallery. The Columbus Auto Dealers Association organized a contest and opened it up to all design students, 17 of which submitted concepts, said Gabe Tippery, design department academic advisor. Six finalists were selected, most of whom are secondyear students. “It’s the whole concept of eye candy for cars,” said Marie Gilman, show manager for the Columbus International Auto Show, and an OSU design department alum. Prographix of Columbus, a company that specializes in custom car wraps is hosting the gallery area at the

show and will conduct live demonstrations of the wrapping process. Students were given the theme of “Love Your City” — meaning Columbus — and asked to apply what that means to them to their designs, said Peter Chan, Ph.D., visual communication design associate professor. “We wanted them to translate what they have learned in theory into something tangible and put it into practice,” he said. Large-scale graphics can be tricky, especially ones with lots of twists and curves, like those that go on cars, said Eric Wolford, owner of Prographix, who provided students with Photoshop templates for the different models of cars. The cars were furnished by area dealers and dealer groups, includ-

ing the Central Ohio Ford Dealers, Central Ohio Honda Dealers, Central Ohio Toyota Dealers, Germain Lexus, and Performance Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram. The public will be able vote for their favorite car while they are at the

show. The winning student will receive a $5,000 scholarship from the participating dealer group. Second place will receive $2,500 and third through sixth place will receive an iPad.

RicaRt automotive

Looking back and moving forward By ReBecca WalteRs Dispatch MeDia Group Rhett Ricart said the car sales industry has evolved into a concierge service. And he is fine with that. “Customers are more informed when they walk into a dealership,” said Ricart, president of Ricart Automotive. “They know what they want and they know what they are willing to pay for it.” Indeed, no longer are customers spending hours test-driving multiple vehicles or haggling over price. By the time they walk in a dealership, they have pretty much made up their mind, except for deciding on a color or the extras they might purchase. “We welcome that,” Ricart said. “It makes the buying process that much easier and faster, and there is a transparency like there has never been before.” As Columbus embarks on The Columbus International Auto Show, set for March 17-20, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Ricart took the time to reflect on what the show means to the Columbus area as well as what the car business has meant to his family, now on its third generation of Ricart family members who will steer the company into another era of automotive sales. The Columbus auto show is the “perfect intersection” for consumers, dealers and manufacturers to meet in one place. Ricart pointed to ride sharing, hybrid and electric vehicles as well as autonomous cars — some of which consumers will see at this year’s show — that are changing the automotive landscaping. “It’s all about sensors and connectivity,” he said. “Cars are lasting longer, they are safer and they get better fuel economy. You have more choices now than you’ve ever had as your needs and wants change and as your life changes.” Sport utility vehicles, big and small, will have a nice showing at the show, Ricart said. “All brands have something nice to offer that fit your lifestyle, and they are all good quality.” Not everyone is sold on whether technology enhances or hinders the driving experience, but it continues to evolve nevertheless. Ricart is of the mindset that the changes are for the positive. “Technology improves (the experience) because it allows

people to multitask, and it improves accuracy and safety. Some will gravitate toward it and some won’t, but it’s all for the better,” he said. Ricart is proud that his family has been able to do business in central Ohio for so many years — as well as be able to give back to the community. “These people are our community. And as dealers, we have put more than six figures back into this community over the years,” he added, referring to the charitable component of the show. “My dad was always one to fly under the radar. He always told me don’t give because you have to, give because you want to. And that’s exactly what these dealers do,” he said. Over the years, a number of organizations — all of which benefit children or families in some way — have been recipients of the auto show gala’s proceeds, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio and the Make a Wish Foundation. “The dealers in central Ohio are some of the best in the United States, and that’s because they are family owned. The families in this city perpetuate this industry,” he said. “These dealers are my friends. But that’s not to say we aren’t competitors when it comes to selling cars,” he added. Ricart has been on the show committee for several years, is a trustee with the convention center and is a director with the national and local auto dealers associations. The economic impact of car shows on cities throughout the United States is in the billions of dollars, Ricart said. “It is the best production in one place and gives consumers a chance to be picky all under one roof. It gives manufacturers and dealers the chance to put their best foot forward. We are one of the few convention centers that operates in the black and without subsidies. This means a lot to me because I’m from Columbus, and my daddy has been here since the 1960s.” Ricart’s father, Paul Ricart Sr., started the business in 1967. Ricart, 59, and his brothers and sisters grew up in the family business. Siblings include Robin, 66; Fred, 65; Susan, 61; and Peter, 54. And now their children and spouses are well poised to take over the business when

iMaGe rhoNDa ross

President Rhett Ricart, along with his son, Jared Ricart, and and nephew, Ricky Ricart, who are poised to take over the family business one day. the time comes. For years in the 1980s and ’90s, Fred was known for his guitar-strumming and singing in commercials. Fred’s son, Ricky, has of late become the face of Ricart Automotive, now on its third generation of Ricart men and women. Ricky is in marketing and sales, and Jared, Rhett’s son, is the fixed operation manager. Although Ricart sees the future of the car sales industry changing, he looks back on its history, and the history of his family in the industry, with just as much fondness. Today, 12 family members — Ricarts and those who have married into the family — work for the company that sells six automotive brands at the automotive megamall situated in Canal Winchester on 67 acres of land. “My dad put everything on the line” to start a dealership back in 1967, Ricart said. Paul Ricart Sr. did it with $12,000. “My dad was bigger than life, and I had an amazing mom (Alta),” Ricart said. The two married when they were in their 30s, considered “old” back in their day. “She would drive a new convertible every year and buy a matching scarf to go with it,”

he recalled. “She was partly responsible for dad’s success,” he added. In fact, when his father didn’t hear back from Ford about opening a dealership, she took it upon herself to write a letter to Henry Ford II, saying he was missing out and that someone should come take a second look. Ford sent out a company representative to interview neighbors, all of whom gave him glowing recommendations. “What they didn’t know was that all of those neighbors were actually family members living in a nearby four-unit apartment building,” Ricart said. Canal Winchester was one of the sites available for a new franchise, which is why the family landed there. The first vehicle the elder Ricart sold was a 1953 Ford Cabin Chassis. Some years later, the Ricarts tracked it down and had it restored. The Ricarts take the business — and running the business as a family — seriously. Two or three times a year, a third-party succession planning counselor meets with the family and takes the temperature on how things

are going both personally and professionally. If something is wrong, they fix it. All family members are required to work from the ground up, go through the ranks and prove themselves, so they know all of the positions it takes to run the business, Ricart said. They also keep a family folder that contains notes from family meetings. “We talk about how outside members are affected by our decisions and we get just as much input from spouses and workers,” Ricart said. “We give everyone the opportunity to work for the business and there are lots of spaces to grow into. We have an advisory board for the company and they interview all family members before they are brought into the company.” The auto industry hasn’t been around for 500 years, but that doesn’t mean its roots don’t run deep, especially with the number of families running dealerships in the greater Columbus area. Families like like Chesrown, McDorman, Byers, Germain — and, of course, Ricart.

A la carte

Accessory Avenue lets consumers pick and choose their options By REBECCA WALTERS Dispatch MeDia Group Ever wanted leather seats or a sunroof, but didn’t have it in the budget to purchase the upgrade package on your vehicle? For the first time, attendees of the Columbus International Auto Show will have an opportunity to check out options and upgrades available on vehicles in a new area called Accessory Avenue. Auto Additions, a local company that works directly with dealers, will have a variety of packages on display, including sunroofs, entertainment systems, leather seats, rims and tires. Auto Additions owner Josh Poulson said many people don’t realize that they can finance upgrades, such as leather seats, when they purchase a vehicle, and that they can do this directly through their dealer. “Sometimes you don’t want or need all of the bells and whistles,” Poulson said.

MSRP $37,920 / #H6100

“But you can customize your car with exactly what you want without there being any out-of-pocket expense.” A handful of vehicles will be all dressed up and decked out at the show, including a 2016 Chevy Silverado with an Ohio State Buckeye package, a Black Mountain Jeep Wrangler package, a 2016 F-150 with a Remington package for hunting enthusiasts, a 2016 Chevy Camaro and a 2016 Nissan Pathfinder. Poulson will be conducting demonstrations at the show using a self-healing clear mask film that prevents chips and dents to the surface of a car. With Accessory Avenue, there is even more reason to come out to the show, said Bruce Daniels, Columbus International Auto Show chairman. “People like to customize their cars, and they like to put their own personal style to the car,” Daniels said. “Cars are one of the most exciting things in our lives.”

SHOW Continued from Page 5

Two-wheeling While there will be plenty of four-wheeled vehicles on display and to test drive, there will also be something for those who prefer the twowheeled type of traveling. Two motorsports dealers will be showcasing Honda as well as Polaris and Victory motorcycles, and will have plenty of products and accessories on hand for attendees to see and touch. ConCepTs, exoTiCs

and ClassiCs As far as the cars at this show go, sport-utility vehicles continue to be a big draw, Gilman said, especially the crossovers. Here are just a handful of makes and models that you’ll see at this year’s show: a 2017 Buick Envision and 2016 Sierra, 2016 Cadillac CT6, 2016 Chevy Malibu, 2016 Buick Cascada and the 10th generation 2016 Honda Civic sedan, voted the North American Car of the Year. Hyundai will be bringing three 2017 models, including the Elantra, Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport. But one of the coolest attractions will be the 2017 Acura NSX “supercar,” Gilman said. The midengine NSX features Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, a twinturbocharged V-6 engine, a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission and a three-electricmotor Sport Hybrid system that together deliver more than 550 peak horsepower. In performance terms, the NSX launches with “zero delay acceleration.” As always, the lobby outside of the show will be lined with classic cars, including a 1966 Shelby GT, 1957 Chevy 150 sedan, 1948 Ford Deluxe Convertible, a 1908 Ford S roadster and a 1969 Chevy Corvette.

A variety of local car clubs and dealers, including the Ohio G/Z/GTR Club, will show off their wares, including a Lamborghini and an Alfa Romeo as well as various makes and models of Infinitis and Nissans, Gilman said.

Making hoops

and balloons For families, Matt the Balloon Guy will be on hand, and there will be face painting for the kiddos. And for basketball fans, there will be four big-screen TVs in the March Madness Lounge, sponsored by IGS Energy, so fans can cheer on their favorite college teams.

The 2017 Elantra will be on display at the Columbus International Auto Show March 17-20.

TeChnology and ConneCTiviTy When it comes to technology and safety, there is no end to what cars are capable of doing these days, Gilman said. From assisted parking to lane-departure warning and everything in between, most makes and models, not just luxury models, provide this equipment as standard or make it available with add-on packages. “It is crazy how many vehicles come standard with technology and safety features,” she said. Take the new Chevy Malibu, which will be at the show. It has Apple CarPlay available, giving you the format of an iPhone on the car’s touch screen. It also has OnStar 4G LTE in-vehicle connectivity, which provides the Internet to your car and wireless phone.

“To be this year's chairman is an honor, and it is an honor to serve with the dealer -owners who put on this show,” Daniels said. “These are some of the nicest, caring philanthropists.” Daniels came to the central Ohio market from Cincinnati in 2005. “I knew about the market and the great reputation that the show has in Columbus,” Daniels said. “Now I know these dealers by name — and by their numbers — and it is such a really neat group of people.” “It’s not common to find this kind of caring. But I think we are all here in Columbus for a reason, and we genuinely enjoy giving back to the community,” he said. “Rick Germain, the recipient of 2016 Dealer of the Year award, is just one example of the generosity represented by this group.”

giving baCk On Friday, March 18, the Columbus Automobile Dealers Association will host its Charity Gala, with proceeds going to local area charities that benefit families and children.

General admission tickets are $10 at the door or $8 online. Children 9 and under are admitted free, and students can get in for $5 with a student ID. For more information, visit columbusautoshow.com
