Council plans to purchase herb center City to pay $345K; facility’s expenses outpaced revenues in 2009, 2010 By MARLA K. KUHLMAN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
After an executive session March 7, Gahanna City Council introduced legislation to purchase the Ohio Herb Education Center, 110 Mill Street, for $345,000 from Mill St. Development LLC. Parks & Recreation director Tony Collins told ThisWeek the city entered into a lease option contract with the op-
tion to purchase the property in 2009. If the purchase is approved, monies would be appropriated from the unencumbered balance of the general fund to Parks Capital. “I’m recommending we exercise our option to close on the building,” Collins said. “We’re working on options with the owner.” Discussion will be held concerning the purchase during council’s next committee meeting on Monday, March 14.
Collins said the original agreement for the building was $340,000, with the owner repairing the roof. The other $5,000 is to pay closing costs. The option agreement ends in May with the closing by June. “The owner has offered a lower price if we close earlier,” Collins said. He provided council with an operational summary for the herb center that shows $53,904 in revenue in 2010 and $80,782 in expenses. In 2009, the cen-
ter generated $50,323 and showed $83,410 in expenses. Among the special events held there in 2010 and the estimated participation included: Herb Day, 500 people; Cultural Arts Festival, 200; and Fall Harvest Day, 250. In 2010, an estimated 1,600 people visited the center, reflecting an increase of 600 from 2009. There were 24 tour groups that visited, leaving an estimated economic im-

City pleased with results of switch By MARLA K. KUHLMAN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Gahanna’s switch to collect income taxes through the Regional Income Tax Agency (RITA) has helped identify more than 2,500 individuals who failed to report taxes in 2009 or earlier, with a liability of more than $167,000. Finance director Angel Mumma told council last week that RITA found 2,583 individuals who didn’t file local income tax returns. Letters were sent to those residents Dec. 7 and hundreds responded in person at city hall, via phone or mail to the city or RITA directly. The remainder were subpoenaed to appear in person the week of Jan. 24 at city hall, Mumma said. Of those who received subpoena’s, 548 individuals appeared for a 22.2-percent response rate. The liability for those who responded is $167,122. Of that amount, $29, 818 has been paid, $31,736 was put on payment plans and $105,568 will be billed. Those residents who didn’t ap-

Most Gahanna residents oppose raising the city’s income tax, but they like the direction the city is heading, its leaders and economic development efforts, according to a survey released last week. Dr. Hugh Clark, of CJI Research Corporation, provided a 126-page report on Feb. 28 that is the result of a 400 resident telephone survey that was conducted after the November election. The interviews were done by trained interviewers from Foresight Research of Rochester, Mich. The community survey sought feedback on quality of life in Gahanna, the job performance of city officials, satisfaction with city services, major city initiatives including Creekside, the possibility of a city income tax hike, and where residents find their local news. The 2010 survey cost $18,500 and was a follow-up to a benchmark survey taken in October 2008 that involved 920 registered voters. The cost of the original survey was $34,000. Assistant city administrator Brandi Braun said it’s critical to engage residents so Gahanna can be the city its residents want over the next five years. “We believe it is imperative to gauge our performance levels as well as ensure we are providing
pact of $92,556, according to the Gahanna Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We think the return on investment is there,” Collins told ThisWeek. “We think we can continue to push for sustainability.” The center featured programs including 44 classes, in addition to a monthly Tea Guild with eight members, Herb Society with 20 members and Plant Con-

Projected $4-million payroll
Council mulls incentives for Momentive By MARLA K. KUHLMAN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Gahanna City Council is considering legislation for an office-and-industrial incentive for Momentive Specialty Chemicals Inc., 630 Morrison Road. The goal is to retain 27 jobs currently in the city and to expand the company’s workforce to 40 full-time employees over three years, with a payroll of $4-million annually. Leah Evans, Gahanna economic development manager, said Hexion Specialty Chemicals established an office at 630 Morrison Road in 2007. As an incentive to Hexion to move into Gahanna, the city had approved a three-year, 50-percent office-industrial incentive for the creation of 42 new
jobs at an average wage of $47,000, or about $2-million in total annual payroll. The total estimated value of the incentive over three years was $45,000. The incentive was approved to start in 2011 after the tax abatement for the property at 630 Morrison Road expired. In October 2010, Hexion Specialty Chemicals and Momentive Performance Materials merged to create Momentive Specialty Chemicals (MSC). The Gahanna office of Hexion, established in 2007, is responsible for back-office functions and currently overlaps other units within Momentive. As a result of this merger, there is an opportunity to eliminate redundancy elsewhere and consolidate these functions in Gahanna. Evans said Momentive also is consider-

Momentive Specialty, a global leader in thermoset resins, is proposing to lease an additional 12,000 to 20,000 square feet of office space in its current facility at 630 Morrison Road. Emily Ludgate, global director of tax at MSC, told council members recently that the company is looking to move additional people to Gahanna. “Many of the products you touch everyday,” Ludgate said. “We make chemicals that go into fiber boards. Gahanna police officer Phillip Stacy has been named officer of the year. During a March 1 ceremony, operations bureau commander Lt. Dan Williams said Stacy embodies what the city seeks in a proactive professional police officer. “He performs his duties with enthusiasm, integrity and a maturity well beyond his actual years of service,” Williams said. Stacy, a member of the department since 2007, told ThisWeek he grew up in a family of law enforcement. His father, James Stacy, retired as chief of the Whitehall Police Department after almost 40 years of service. “He gave me the positives and negatives of law enforcement,” Stacy said. “He made me understand. He wanted to make sure I was 100 percent sure about going into it.” Stacy said he’s honored by the award. See OFFICER STACY, page A2

The new application would allow Momentive to retain 27 jobs currently in Gahanna and increase their workforce to 40 full-time jobs over a three-year period, with the potential for additional job growth. With an average wage of $100,000 per year, an annual payroll of approximately $4-million is anticipated. In addition, Momentive expects to invest nearly $1-million in leasehold improvements, furniture and fixtures. Evans said the project would secure the growth of the company in Gahanna, provide immediate value in job creation and position Gahanna as a location for future projects. Council president David Samuel said the deal is “a great thing” for Gahanna, pointing to new jobs and the estimated $4million payroll.

The incentives advisory board met Feb. 7 and voted to recommend the project for a six-year O&I incentive that would provide a tiered benefit of 75 percent for the first two years, 50 percent for the second two years and 25 percent for the final two years. The total estimated incentive payment to the company would be $180,000. The net income-tax revenue to the city would be $180,000 over six years and $300,000 over eight years. Mayor Becky Stinchcomb said joining RITA in late 2009 for 2010 implementation was the right decision. “ While it is true that we would have been able to find some of those accounts before the use of RITA, our limited resources would not have yielded these results in such a short amount of time,” she said. “As we continue to identify additional new accounts, we hope to continue collecting tax revenue that is rightfully due to Gahanna.” Revenue from Gahanna’s 1.5-percent income tax made up 58.3-percent, or $12,662,058, of the city’s $23.5-million general-fund revenue in 2010. Ten Ukrainian leaders visited Gahanna on March 2 as part of the U.S. Agency for International Development (US AID)-Community Connections program. Gahanna City Hall and Gahanna Lincoln High School stops were part of the February 16- March 9 tour by the Ukrainians to examine urban planning and development practices in the United States. Mark Poeppelman, executive director of the Columbus International Program, said Gahanna was chosen because of an existing relationship with the high school. “We also wanted to showcase the Creekside project, so they could look at an area that has transformed from prior years,” he said. “The economy is experiencing a major transformation in Luhansk, and we wanted to show them an area that has transformed and has a new use put into place. The idea is to show model communities. We also spent time with the city of Columbus, so we wanted to show an independent neighborhood that borders the city.“ The delegation met with Ms. Lee Link, Gahanna international business teacher; Leah Evans, Gahanna economic development manager; Bonnie Gard, planning & zoning administrator; Anthony Jones, deputy director of planning & development, and Sadicka White, director of planning & development. “It was an excellent opportunity for a global exchange of ideas and experiences that transcended language and geographic barriers in order to increase knowledge and understanding of development issues faced worldwide,” White said. During the session with city officials, the delegation reviewed the small city operations and processes and procedures for planning. They also discussed specific projects, including Creekside, as well as sustainable development practices. The session at the high school provided an opportunity for the delegation to volunteer by sharing with students about their lives and the people of Ukraine.

‘Joseph’ Letter
Township firefighters are a bargain for taxpayers To the editor: As a resident of the city of Gahanna, you are also a Mifflin Township resident, and as township residents, you and I will be voting on a fire levy in May — a levy needed to staff a full-time paramedic ambulance on the east side of Gahanna and to maintain services for the next five to seven years. My aim is to provide you with accurate information as you prepare to make your decision. It seems that public employee wages are the main concern for citizens. This is where I would like to draw your attention. What is it worth to you to have the peace of mind that comes with having skilled firefighter-paramedics just a few minutes away? A starting full-time Mifflin firefighter makes $9.88 per hour and a 25-year veteran firefighter tops out at $21.48 per hour. Ninetyfour percent of Mifflin firefighters are also paramedics and are paid an additional 86 cents per hour. These wages are on the low end of the median for Ohio firefighter wages as reported by the U.S. Department of Labor. Mifflin Township firefighter wages are historically between 10- and 12-percent below those of their peers in comparable fire departments. Another citizen concern is automatic pay increases and bind-
ing labor agreements. Wage increases are not guaranteed or automatic, nor are cost-of-living adjustments. Mifflin Township firefighters receive modest increases based on two or more of the following: • The availability of funds • Meeting performance benchmarks • Obtaining certifications or licensure • Being promoted (or assigned to a technical position) Mifflin Township’s union firefighters and dispatchers are not covered by a labor contract, yet they work closely with our leadership to ensure a balanced budget. As a small organization, employees are responsible for a portion of medical insurance premiums in addition to any required co-pay for medical and pharmacy services. It is also important to note that Mifflin firefighters’wages have been frozen since 2008. The fact is that Mifflin Township firefighter-paramedics — Gahanna’s firefighter-paramedics— are a true value. Gahanna police protects those of us who reside in the city, so we do not vote on Mifflin Township police levies. Mifflin Township and the city of Gahanna collaborate in many ways to ensure that residents are serviced efficiently and effectively. Eliminating du-
plicated emergency services in 1944 is only one example of a longstanding effort to reduce taxpayer burden. I encourage more agencies to follow our lead. Remember that firefighters are also taxpayers with families who are also affected by economic conditions and share your same concerns. The point is that our firefighters and trustees are doing their part to use your tax dollars responsibly. The levy is not the result of poor management or high firefighter wages. Our funding system requires us to return to the polls every four to six years to explain how your dollars are spent and to request funds for the next budget cycle. For us, this levy is about staffing fire engines and paramedic ambulances as cost-effectively as possible. I hope you will choose to support this effort knowing that we are doing our best to keep costs down while providing excellent services. If you have additional questions or would like to share your views, contact us by e-mail or visit our webpage at Mifflin-oh.gov, our facebook page “Mifflin Township Division of Fire” or by calling 471-0542 during business hours. Please do us all a favor: Don’t make a comment My junior high school days probably were no better and no worse than anyone else’s, but they happened to fall during the popularity of slam books. Slam books, for those not of my generation, or geographical origins, were spiral notebooks just like the spiral notebooks carried from class to class by nearly every student. Slam book users signed their names on the first page. On the next someone would have scrawled “What do you think of …” followed by page after page of classmates’names, one name per page. Under each name was written what passed for personal opinion in those days of rigid conformity. The greatest compliment was “tough,” often spelled “tuff” by the girls who also dotted their i’s with little circles. To be tough was
to be cool. The words we used to express the opposite of tough I will spare you, but they came up often in slam MARGO books. To BARTLETT come into possession of one of those toxic objects containing your own name was to stand on the brink of despair. Or elation, of course, if the right people happened to write “She’s tough” on your page, but this was seventh grade, and you can imagine how often that happened. I’m reminded of slam books and the damage they inflicted on people’s tender parts whenever I come across internet stories that allow reader feedback. People who

don’t have to reveal their names will say all kinds of ugly things. This isn’t a new problem, of course. The nastiness of the nameless began causing problems almost the minute online discussions became possible. Many newspapers and other publications have taken down their comment threads. The editor of a Wisconsin newspaper said although he’d had high hopes when readers’comments first were introduced to the online newspaper, three years later he was discouraged. “People can’t or won’t behave,” he said. Because my hand is waving so madly, I imagine the editor sees it and calls on me. “Won’t,” I say. “Excuse me?” the Wisconsin editor says. (His name is Scott.) “Won’t,” I say. When it comes to classroom confidence, Hermione Granger has nothing on me. “You said ‘People can’t or won’t behave,’ and I’m giving you the answer: It’s ‘won’t.’” “Yes, well,” says Scott. He didn’t say I was right, but of course I am. People are perfectly capable of behaving well when others can see, when cameras are taking pictures and when they have to sign their names. Just look at letters to the editor. The conventional kind, I mean. Writers must sign their names and leave a telephone number, and trust me editors call those numbers. People aren’t above signing somebody else’s name to letters or pulling other kinds of funny business; we have to be watched. And I do mean ‘we,’ since I’m a person myself. Not that I’ve ever See JUST THINKING, page A9
BUSINESS IS BOOMING! Just as Baby Boomers are settling into middle age, a revolution of sorts is taking place in the world of hearing instruments. Since its introduction in 2005, the open-fit hearing instrument has been a resounding success. The open-fit design brings greater wearing comfort, it is less noticeable than traditional behind-the-ear (BTE) instruments, and it provides users with more natural sound. On top of these advantages, open-fit hearing instruments are perfectly suited to the type of hearing loss that Baby Boomers are likely to experience: mild to moderate high-frequency hearing loss. Moreover, open-fit instruments have a minimalist design that is in keeping with Boomer’s active lifestyles. Is this all coincidence or just a matter of good fortune? Boomers will decide. People stay younger by hearing better, whether with an open-fit or BTE hearing instrument. The type of hearing aid that is the best choice for an individual is based on many factors, including the size and shape of the ear, the type and degree of the hearing loss, and the individual’s typical listening environment. At ABSOLUTE HEARING SOLUTIONS, our experienced staff is committed to determining the most appropriate hearing device for each patient’s needs. Please call us today at 614-654-4309 to schedule a comprehensive hearing exam. Our office is located at 1000 Morrison Rd., Suite H, Gahanna.

Y sets ‘play date’ to get families moving VARSITY By MARLA K. KUHLMAN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
The Gahanna YMCA is encouraging parents to schedule a play date with their kids on Saturday, April 16 and to commit to being active every day. In recognition of the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the nation’s largest health day for families, the free event will take place at the Gahanna YMCA, 555 YMCA Place, from 2 to 6 p.m. on April 16. “This is a great community event of ours that attracts 300 to 400 people each year,” said Chris Angellatta, YMCA executive director. The public is welcome, added Kim Louks, youth and family di-
rector. “The climbing wall will be available, canoe rides for the kids in the pool and different healthy snacks,” he said. “We’ll also have running relay races.” As a leading nonprofit strengthening community through healthy living, the Y holds Healthy Kids Day to teach healthy habits to kids and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity, Angellatta said. At a time when one child in three in the United States is overweight or obese (according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), developing healthier habits that include increased physical activity is more important than ever, he said. “At the Gahanna YMCA we know that parents struggle to find
the time to incorporate more active play and healthier habits into their kids’ daily routine,” Angellatta said. “Doing so doesn’t have to require extra money or resources. It’s as simple as making a play date with your kids, with two key requirements — be active and have fun!” As part of Healthy Kids Day, the Y encourages families to make play dates everyday as a simple way to become healthier, more active and connected. The Gahanna YMCA recommends five simple activities families can do to play together: • Schedule a game night. Play games with the kids that incorporate physical activity, such as Charades. • Dance. Turn on your favorite
party music and dance. Make this activity more fun with a dance contest. • Go riding. Find a new bike path or park for a fun afternoon outdoors. Grab your helmets and go rollerblading or bike riding. • Channel your inner youth. Remember playing hopscotch, jump rope, Simon Says or freeze tag as a kid? Teach your favorite childhood games to your kid(s) and play them together. • Play outside. Visit your neighborhood park or camp out in your backyard for some outdoor fun. Get everyone moving with fun sports like soccer, basketball or baseball. Healthy Kids Day will be celebrated at nearly 1,600 Y’s across the country, with more than
700,000 families expected to attend this year. Nationally, Healthy Kids Day is supported by the Dodge brand, PepsiCo and Sam’s Club. Prior to the afternoon’s Healthy Kids Day, the Gahanna 5K Run will be held that morning at 9 a.m. The 3rd annual Gahanna 5K is a walk-run that’s open to anyone. The route will go through the Rose Run neighborhood across from the Y. Registration will be available the morning of the run. Cost is $20 for Y members and $25 for nonmembers. For more information, about Healthy Kids Day or the 5K run, call Louks at 614-416-9622 or visit www.ymcacolumbus.org/Gahanna.

SURVEY Continued from page A1 services that are aligned with the expectations of our residents,” she wrote in a note to city directors. Clark said about two-thirds or 68 percent of those surveyed believe that things are headed in the right direction in Gahanna. When asked to define the right direction or wrong track, many respondents mentioned Creekside and the local schools. “To many Creekside represents a progressive, appealing aspect of city life,” he said. “To a smaller, but significant number of people, it presents an overreach by the city.” In surveying the perceived value of Creekside to Gahanna, 60 percent of the respondents said it was worthwhile to develop because the old downtown area needed more parking, improvements to Creekside Park and additional space for public events and new businesses. Thirty-one percent of the respondents said Creekside wasn’t worthwhile, and 9 percent were not sure. No matter what residents thought about Creekside, 93 percent of the respondents in 2010 and 90 percent in 2008 said they had visited Creekside. Of those visiting Creekside last year, 43 percent said they had been into Creekside once a month or more often, and another 31 percent had been there once every two or three months for a total of 74 percent saying they use Creekside often or at least regularly. When asked what’s the most important challenge facing the city, 24 percent of the respondents said schools; 21 percent, finances; 14 percent, taxes; 8 percent, jobs/economy; 6 percent, Creekside; 6 percent, traffic; 2 percent, police; and 2 percent, improvements. Clark said many respondents spoke well of the schools and lamented the defeat of the levy. “Others decried what they perceive as wasteful spending by the schools,” Clark said. Sixty-four percent of survey respondents oppose raising the city income tax from 1.5 to 2.5 percent. When told that only earned income tax would be taxed and that maintenance of city facilities would depend on passage, opposition decreased to 56 percent. Those residents who work out-
COUNCIL side of Gahanna tend to work in Columbus where they already pay 2.5 percent income tax. Clark said those residents are especially opposed to the increase, while those living and working in Gahanna are split, with 51 disapproving and 48 percent approving. Survey participants continued to believe city services were a good value or very good value for the taxes paid. A total of 73 percent of respondents rated the services as very good (25 percent) or good (48 percent). Most others did not suggest that services are poor value, but only that they are average rather than good or very good. Among city services, the best rated was park maintenance, which received a 99 percent positive rating. The lowest rated function, street maintenance, still had a 90 percent positive rating, Clark said. Comparing 2008 to 2010, ratings of separate departmental functions remained constant or improved for five of nine functions. Collection of trash and yard waste improved substantially. Snow removal last winter and street maintenance both declined from the “very satisfied” category, moving to the “somewhat satisfied” category. The mayor continues to receive positive job ratings, with 20 percent rating her performance as excellent and another 39 percent as good for a total of 59 percent positive. Only 8 percent rated her performance as poor or very poor. The rating does indicate a decline from 2008, when 24 percent rated her as excellence and 48 percent as good for a 72 percent in the most positive categories. Ratings of the city council’s job performance also remain generally positive, although lower than the mayor. While a total of 59 percent had rated council’s job performance as good or very good in 2008, that percentage decreased to 46 percent by 2010. Respondents said weekly newspapers continue to be the place they look for local news, with 52 percent getting their local news from weeklies in 2010 compared to 57 percent in 2008. Other listed sources for news in 2010 included the city’s website, 21 percent; social media, 19 percent; Gateway publication, 5 percent; and miscellaneous ways, 2 percent.

Collins said the building also has historical significance. “It’s one of only two structures from the original town of Bridgeport,” he said. The Nafzger-Miller house, in which the Herb Center is located, is listed in the National Register of Historical Places, with the original structure being built in 1855 and additions made to the home in 1910. The center includes a gift shop, parlor and kitchen and is used for classes, parties, meetings and rentals. JUST THINKING Gahanna
Continued from page A4 sent a nasty online comment, but as a human, I can imagine being outraged enough, or angry enough, or self-righteous enough to maybe get carried away. And there’s another thing. It’s a thing that occurred to me just the other day, as I was reading a story in “Slate” about National Public Radio listeners, who shoot off furious e-mails every time NPR dares to air a story that touches on popular culture: Justin Bieber’s haircut. Tiger Woods’ comeback. The Super Bowl. “If we wanted to hear this guff, we’d listen to commercial radio,” more or less sums up the remarks. NPR also gets approving letters after such stories, letters along the lines of “I adore Justin Bieber! Have more stories about him!” But NPR rarely reads those on the air because that would be bragging. So, of course, people complain. Complaints get attention. As for readers’ comments, those anonymous threads so inviting to the crude and uncivilized, well, their delivery is indefensible but you can’t blame them for taking the opposite side of the position presented. To agree with the original story would make the commenter a mere follower. Throwing up objections is to stake a claim of one’s own. Who wouldn’t do that, given the chance? That’s why I for one would like to see online comment capability disappear altogether. It just makes people contentious: “What points can I dispute in this story?” they immediately think. Delete the backtalk option, and they might shut up and think about what they just read, if only for a few minutes. Besides, preventing people from e-mailing vitriol makes the world a better place. Slam books, in any form, are noxious. Margo Bartlett is a ThisWeek staff writer. E-mail her at mbartlett@thisweeknews.com.

Great deals, healthy meals and Asian flavors at Poong Mei From its sign outside, Poong Mei — aka Spring of China — claims it’s a Chinese restaurant. And you do pass through a red-and-gold imperial-type “China gate” by G.A. Benton portal to enter the place’s dining room. But one gaze at Poong Mei’s menu or the food laid out on its busy tables (many is more Chinese than Japanese, neither filled with obvious regulars) informs you is the dominant ethnicity. Because while that while this self-described “Asian bistro” Poong Mei certainly has Chinese and Japanese appendages, its head, heart, body and soul are purely Korean. Ambience-wise, Poong Mei is neither particularly distinguished nor bad looking. Lived-in but not dumpy, it’s got a sort of past-its-prime, small-town country club vibe. Likely its most standout features are a huge, sports-tuned projection TV and goofy, piped-in stringy music, By Dan Sohner/ThisWeek which could’ve been exCuddled Tofu Soup with Beef Short Rib at Poong Mei. humed from the sound-

tracks of melodramatic ’70s movies. So the food’s the thing at Poong Mei — and fortunately, the food is very good. A sensational shareable starter was an octet of obviously homemade Steamed Pork Buns ($8). Served on a steaming metal tray, they were beautiful snowwhite pillows with puffy, delicate, meltin-your-mouth textures and lovely, mildly fermented, sourdough-like flavors. Inside each was a wildly juicy scallionflecked clump of lusty, sausagey ground pork. Also great was a more robust group meal-igniter which could equally serve as a large entree for a single diner — Seafood Noodle Soup ($10, comes with a fine array of “ban chan,” small plates). In a super fragrant, medium spicy red broth were Poong Mei’s phenomenal housemade noodles (long, thin, silky and springy) plus bits of tender seafood-like green mussels, little shrimp, cuttlefish and octopus. A handful of veggies — like sweet carrots and earthy greens — rounded out the bowl’s happily married flavors.

A bold, garlicky and mildly spicy chili broth held lots of wiggly bits of silky tofu plus veggies such as unmushy zucchini and cloud ear mushrooms. At the last second, a raw egg had been dropped into the gurgling hot broth — and I was amazed how much it enriched the soup when I broke the egg’s yolk and stirred it through the quick-cooking pot. But wait, there was more! The supersatisfying, lean soup (which included ban chan) had a fatty accomplice in the form
of irresistible kalbi (three bone-in shortribs) slathered in a sweet, thick sort of barbecue sauce. Poong Mei’s terrific housemade noodles were the basis for a dramatically allblack stir-fried Zhang Mun ($11). Looking like a dish of squid ink-sauced pasta but tasting like the marvelous (if a bit greasy) Asian stir-fry it really was, this nifty noodle-athon united pork, tiny shrimp, a lot of onions, veggies and assorted seafood bits in a salty fermented black bean sauce. Whether it’s that Chinese-style dish, or a neat Chinese-Korean hybrid like Shredded Pork with Hot Pepper ($12) or a great, straight-up Korean Hot Stone BiBim-Bob ($10), Poong Mei does it well, inexpensively and with genuine flavors. Factory worker returns to food industry After working factory jobs both in Delaware and in central Ohio, Anuson “Chris” Khumauksorn is once again pursuing his love of cooking and the restaurant business. The Bangkok native has opened Taste of Thai in the Polaris area, replacing Ha Long Bay, a Vietnamese restaurant at 8489 Sancus Blvd. The menu offers a wide range of Thai classics, from tom yum soup to pad Thai to shredded
papaya salad. Most entrees are in the $9 to $11 range, with a few of the house specialties costing around $15. Owning a restaurant — and being its chef — isn’t exactly what Khumauksorn had in mind. Sure, he helped his mother run a restaurant in his native Thailand,
while also earning a bachelor’s degree in business management. A cousin who owned a restaurant in Florida beckoned, so Khumauksorn and his family moved to the Sunshine State to help. He removed himself from the restaurant industry for several years and moved to Ohio with his wife. Yet he longed to return to the business and staked out a location in the Polaris area, which currently has a lot of restaurants but no Thai.

Taste of Thai owner Anuson “Chris” Khumauksorn prepares his pad Thai with rice noodles, shrimp, chicken, eggs, ground peanuts, beansprouts and scallion in pad Thai sauce.
The interior – and store sign – at Taste of Thai is bright yellow for a reason, as the color symbolizes warmth and cheerfulness, he said. He said there’s still a learning curve for some customers, who tend to group all Asian cuisines together. Or they have another stigma about Thai. “People think of Thai food as spicy, hot,” he said. Therefore, he makes it clear that he will adjust the spice level to the diner’s preference. For now, there is no alcohol, but Khumauksorn said he intends to apply for a license to sell wine and beer. Taste of Thai is open for lunch and dinner daily. For more information, call 614-436-3735. Fresh off the opening of the successful San-Su, Yun Hui “Yumi” Wada has another restaurant planned for Bethel Road. Aoi, a Japanese restaurant, will take over the 5,000-square-foot building that once housed Einstein Bros. Bagels and Boston Market, 876-878 Bethel Road. The menu will feature sushi, noodle dishes, tempura and the like. It is expected to open in May. Meanwhile, Wada has leased San-Su, a Korean restaurant, to Jae Uk Jong. Wada is the founder of the two local Genji Japanese Steakhouses, among other enterprises.

Lions face tall challenge against Scots By JARROD ULREY ThisWeek Community Newspapers
When Gahanna Lincoln High School boys basketball coach Tony Staib was asked about what his team can expect when it faces Walnut Ridge in a Division I district final at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at the Fairgrounds Coliseum, he immediately mentioned the matchup problems the Scots cause because of their height. Just as quickly, senior guard Stevie Taylor chimed in.
“But we’ve got speed,” Taylor said. “We’re just happy that we’ve got a whole week to defend our district title. We’ll see what happens (this) Saturday.” The Lions might have gained an extra boost of confidence with the way they bounced back from a slow start to beat ninth-seeded Westerville North 65-63 in overtime in a district semifinal March 5 at the Fairgrounds. North led 17-9 after one quarter and held its biggest lead at 22-9 with 6 minutes, 26 seconds to go in the second quarter before the Lions began clawing
their way back. Walnut Ridge led 18-11 after one quarter during its district semifinal matchup March 5 against seventh-seeded Dublin Coffman and outscored the Shamrocks 17-8 in the third quarter on the way to a 60-53 victory. The biggest issue for Gahanna could be how it matches up against the Scots’ inside combination of 6-foot-10 senior Dwayne Bazemore, 6-8 sophomore Allasane Kah and 6-4 senior forward Austin Traylor. The Lions’tallest regulars are 6-5 sen-
ior Brandon Smith and 6-4 sophomore Aaron Jackson, but they outrebounded North 39-33 as Smith put together a 12point, 12-rebound performance. Taylor scored 18 points, including all eight of the Lions’ points in overtime, and Brien Winston sealed the win by blocking a shot attempt by North’s Garrett Lieb in the closing seconds of overtime. “I just felt the need to step up for my team,” Taylor said. “If I can hit the shot, I just want to do whatever my team needs. It took a team effort (to
beat North). From a senior standpoint, we took control. We just said that we’re not going to go out like this. We knew it was going to be an up-and-down game, and we won the battle in the trenches.” Seeded fourth, Gahanna takes a 221 record into the district final. The Lions are making their second district final appearance in a row, having beaten North 60-54 in overtime last season. Walnut Ridge is the sixth seed and See BOYS, page B2

Gahanna Lincoln High School girls basketball coach Rick Hauser expected Northland to focus much of its effort on stopping senior Tiyona Marshall throughout their Division I district final March 5 at Olentangy Liberty. The second-seeded Vikings did so, holding the third-team all-district guard to one field goal, and they provided a few other defensive tricks to contend with as well. Northland mixed full-court pressure with tough man-to-man defense led by all-district guard Alexis Peterson to beat Gahanna 51-35 and earn its first district championship since 1983. The Lions finished 17-7. “It boiled down to them playing better defense than we did,” said Hauser, who slipped to 2-3 in district finals since becoming Gahanna’s coach nine seasons ago. “They did a lot of switching, which seemed to confuse us. Inside, very few easy shots were taken and we rushed a lot of shots. “We knew they weren’t going to let (Marshall) beat us two years in a row, and I thought the Peterson girl played very good defense on her. They hurt us when they went from a full-court press to a half-court man.” When the Lions beat North-
way with 26 points. The Vikings held her to six points this time, as Quiera Lampkins led the Lions with 15 points and Chrishna Butler scored 10. Reyna Montgomery, who along with Marshall and Zenobia Bess were among the few key players back from the team that faced Northland last season, has been battling injuries and was held to two points. Peterson scored 20 points to lead Northland. Symone Denham had 11 points and Tatiana Chapple scored 10 to help the Vikings improve to 21-1. Northland played Pickerington North in a regional semifinal March 8. “We had a good basketball game defensively,” said Northland coach Dean Washington, whose only other district title as a coach came when he led the Marion-Franklin boys to a championship in 1993. “We showed a little bit of pride.” Gahanna led 12-10 after the first quarter, but the Vikings outscored the Lions 14-4 during the second quarter. The Lions scored seven of the first nine points of the fourth quarter to cut their 40-27 deficit to eight, but the Vikings answered by scoring the next six points. Northland led 48-34 with 1 minute, 44 seconds remaining.

Chapple, a 5-foot-11 senior who has signed with East Carolina University, combined with 6-2 sophomore Jasmine Weatherspoon to make it difficult for Gahanna to get close to the basket. Hauser believes the loss
should prove beneficial in the long run to a team that features four sophomores in Butler, Lampkins and Bess in the starting lineup and Montgomery off the bench. The only seniors were Marshall and Tiana Thompson.
“It didn’t help that Reyna wasn’t 100 percent,” Hauser said. “They exploited us at the end of the game. They scored a layup to get back up 10. Chapple is a tough matchup because she can play on the perimeter and on the

Arnold: Getting to state was ‘greatest feeling’ By JARROD ULREY ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Doryan Arnold understands the odds were stacked against him advancing to the Division I state wrestling tournament this season. The Gahanna Lincoln High School senior didn’t begin competing in the sport until his sophomore season. As a junior, he placed sixth at 125 pounds at a sectional tournament to finish 13-10. Competing this season at 119, Arnold took advantage of his last opportunity to shine by finishing fourth at the district tournament Feb. 2526 at Hilliard Darby to move on to state for the first time. On March 3 at Ohio State, he went 0-2 at state to finish 29-19.
“It’s the greatest feeling (to get to state),” Arnold said. “I only started wrestling as a sophomore, so it almost shouldn’t even be possible.” Arnold opened state by getting pinned in 36 seconds by Lakewood St. Edward sophomore Dean Heil, the 2010 state champion at 103. He then was pinned by Cincinnati Moeller’s Brian MacVeigh in 1:55. “Being out there was incredible,” Arnold said. “I guess (Heil) was just really good at this sport. Anyone (at state) is really good at it.” “He had to face a returning state champion (in Heil) and MacVeigh was a state qualifier last year,” coach Kyle Bentley said. “He faced two high-caliber kids, and 119 is a deep weight class. The Gahanna Lincoln High School boys bowling team completed its best season in program history on a high note. As one of 16 teams in the state tournament at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl on March 5, the Lions remained in contention for a spot in the championship bracket throughout the qualifying round. A rough first Baker game ultimately kept Gahanna from moving on, but it bounced back to score a 210 in its final Baker game. The Lions placed 10th in their first state appearance. “Our Baker scores improved each round,” coach Bruce Zink said. “The last Baker game was really special. We had a clean game with no open frames, and that was our goal all year. I thought they did a great job and held up really well under the pressure by supporting each other.” The Lions finished with a total score of 3,284 as the top eight teams advanced to the championship bracket. Wapakoneta, which led with a 3,503 after the qualifying round, lost 3-2 to Troy for the title. Gahanna was tied with Fairborn for 10th (2,719) after the first three games of the qualifying round. He added another 3 with 40 seconds to go to make it 57-55 before Matt Rhodes scored with 20 seconds left to force overtime. “To Westerville North’s credit, they came out early and hit some shots, but we were disappointed with the way we started the game,” Staib said. “Our shot selection in the first quarter wasn’t the greatest. I was proud of our second quarter. At halftime we felt pretty good. We have some good, young players, but we’re a senior-dominant team and some of our seniors hit some big shots.” •TICKET INFO — Tickets for the district championship game will be on sale in the athletics office during school hours and from 8:30 a.m.-noon on Saturday, March 12.

He’s a very smart, hardworking kid and I couldn’t be more proud of him.” Arnold was the Lions’ lone representative at state after they endured a rough district tournament. Sophomore Drew McDougle, a 2010 state qualifier at 112, appeared to be on his way to qualifying for state at 130 when an injury in his district semifinal match derailed his hopes. He ended up sixth at district and finished 41-9. Sophomore Kasee McDougle (135), Drew’s twin brother, went down with an injury in his opening district match and was forced to default in the second round.

At the Pickerington North sectional Feb. 19, Gahanna placed sixth (114.5) of 13 teams behind champion Liberty (239.5). Drew McDougle won a sectional title. Kasee McDougle was second, with Arnold, Bergenstein and Strohschein each placing third and Noel placing fourth. Also competing at sectional were seniors Kyle Baker (171, 1-2) and Donald Payne (189, 02), junior Will Hunsucker (140, 0-2), sophomores Zach Holloway (145, 0-2), Timmy Miller (125, 0-2) and Jack Prior (103,

Grove City (3-4) placed fifth, followed by Reynoldsburg (2-5), Groveport (1-6) and Newark (0-7). Senior Nick Brown, who was a state qualifier last year at 189, went down with a season-ending knee injury at Gahanna’s home Lion Duals on Jan. 22. He finished 18-5. “We have three district qualifiers coming back, and we had a really good freshman class,” coach Kyle Bentley said. “Our freshman team won the Pickerington North tournament and was second at the Pickerington Central freshman tournament. We didn’t even have any individual champions at Pickerington North and still won.” julrey@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com

We had a lot of experience on this team, and it was good to come into the tournament with that experience.” Granville was one of four seniors on the team’s state-tournament roster along with Ryan Arras, Collen Beck and Jacob Reed. Jordan Zink was another senior who contributed this season. During the qualifying round, Granville led the Lions by placing 26th with a 594 series. He turned in a 233 in his second game. Also scoring for Gahanna were Reed (41st, 565), freshman Shane Hull Jr. (58th, 536) and Arras (66th, 513). Junior Ryan Rudd played the first two games, scoring 209 and 168. During the regular season, Gahanna went 1413 overall and tied Jonathan Alder for second at 11-2 in the Central Ohio High School Bowling Conference-North Division behind Westerville South (12-1). Worthington (1-11) and Worthington Christian (0-13). Gahanna then placed fifth (3,759) at the sectional tournament Feb. 18 at Wayne Webb’s behind champion Jonathan Alder (4,056) as the top six advanced to district. Arras was second (676) and Hull took 10th (587) at the sectional. At district Feb. 26 at HP Lanes, Gahanna earned the final qualifying spot by placing third (4,026) behind Westerville Central (4,168) and Zanesville Maysville (4,068). Reed placed fifth (666) and Granville was tied for 13th (601). Others eligible to return who were on the team’s tournament roster are junior Aaron May and sophomore Tanner Betke. The state tournament marked just the third time this season that Arras competed, as he was sidelined with a dislocated kneecap. “I thought the team did a great job,” said Zink, who completed his fifth season as coach. “Brad Granville, Shane Hull and Jacob Reed were all really strong all season. Jacob Reed had a good day, and Rudd started off with a 209. “We were hoping to make it to the qualifying round, but I’m just proud that the guys made it this far. We’ll have Shane and Ryan Rudd coming back next year.”

Academy Roundup
Boys basketball team shoots down theory By FRANK DiRENNA ThisWeek Community Newspapers
The Fairgrounds Coliseum is known as a challenging basketball venue for shooters. The Columbus Academy boys team foiled that notion in a 71-46 win over North Union in a Division III district tournament semifinal March 2. The Vikings made nine of 17 3-point attempts, and sophomore Daniel Aronowitz hit four and scored 23 points. “People had been talking about that all week,” Aronowitz said of the Fairgrounds’ reputation for being tough on shooters. “I just try to ignore it and do my thing. We’ve talked amongst ourselves (that) it’s all mental; it’s all in
your head. If you get out there and just start shooting around and get that out of your head and start making some shots, the flow kind of keeps going.” Sixth-seeded Academy was 17-5 overall before playing MSL-Ohio Division rival and top-seeded Heath for a district title on March 9. The winner will play the winner of the Jamestown Greeneview-Cincinnati Summit Country Day district final in a regional semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, at Kettering Fairmont. Against fourth-seeded North Union, the Vikings took control with an 18-0 run in the second quarter. Academy, which led 16-15 after one quarter, used two 3-pointers apiece from Aronowitz and Austin Peterman to help take a 34-
20 lead at halftime. “Our game plan coming in was try to wear them down defensively with full-court pressure,” coach Christopher Jones said. “That’s a good squad and before their legs went a little bit, it was sort of nip and tuck. Then there came a point where they were sucking a little bit of wind and we were able to take advantage at that point.” North Union pulled to within 34-24, but could not get closer. Junior forward Zach Ratcliff scored 16 points and junior guard Tim Eldridge added 11 points for Academy. “This feels good because we work so hard to get in shape and have everyone really conditioned,” Aronowitz said. “Coach always talks about win-
