City council rejects union contract USWA will file unfair labor practices lawsuit against Reynoldsburg By DAVID S. OWEN ThisWeek Community Newspapers United Steel Workers of America representative Mark Shaw said Tuesday the union will file an unfair labor practice lawsuit against the city after Reynoldsburg City Council rejected an offer of a three-year contract for its 17 union members. During a special meeting Feb. 28, city
council voted unanimously (6-0, with Mel Clemens absent) to reject the offer, one that was prepared by Mayor Brad McCloud and ratified by the USWA on Jan. 28. The proposed three-year agreement included a 2-percent raise for the union members during the first year, the same amount the city’s nonunion employees received this year, McCloud said. For the next two years, there would
have been a wage reopener, McCloud said. “In other words, to be determined … we just agreed we would negotiate it each of the next two years and also said all of the health insurance benefits would be exactly the same as the nonunion employees,” he said. Shaw said the fact that council turned down the offer is a clear indication of an unfair labor practice that will bring
the two sides in front of the State Employee Relations Board. “It seems pretty elementary to me, if you offer us an agreement, a settlement, and we accept it and then you ultimately turn it down, that appears to be badfaith bargaining to me,” Shaw said. “Once we accepted their offer, bargaining is over. There’s no more to bargain over. We accepted their last offer … then they turn it down?” he said.

Gregory leaving local SWAT team after 20 years
‘Measuring up’ important to commerce and economy By DAVID S. OWEN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
By DAVID S. OWEN ThisWeek Community Newspapers Reynoldsburg police Sgt. Jeff Gregory has stepped down after more than 500 missions and 20 years with the department’s SWAT team. Gregory, 48, said he is not completely retiring from the police force, but he is leaving the SWAT team because of the physical demands the job requires and because he thinks it’s time to allow younger officers an opportunity to join. “You reach a point where you have to consider your age, whether you’re an athlete or you do a job where it involves your physical health, and you have to look at the demands placed on a SWAT officer,” Gregory said. “You have to consider, am I still able to do this at the level that I should be able to do it? So at some point, you have to step aside.” Police Chief Dave Suciu recently presented Gregory with a Distinguished Service Award for his work with the SWAT team. “He done an outstanding job as leader of the SWAT team, doing a good job procuring equipment for the team, increasing their training and keeping them — very effective and professional,” Suciu said. “There’s a lot of extra time involved and you have to be willing to do a lot of call-outs. And there’s a lot of management involved with the extra duties. It takes a lot of extra effort.” Gregory officially retired from the SWAT team on Feb. 1, but will stay on for another few weeks while officer Ron Wright makes the transition to supervisor. The team currently has 11 officers but that number is expected to increase to 13 in the coming months. Gregory said he will miss serving on the SWAT team. “I have definitely enjoyed working in this community and will continue to serve,” he said. “I’ve certainly made a lot of friends here. It’s a good career. “The best thing that has happened to me is I’ve had a lot of opportunities with our police department, for training and joining the SWAT
“I am sure Reynoldsburg will face another board charge from us, and I think they’re trying to get out from underneath the three-year deal because of Senate Bill 5,” he said. Most council members indicated they opposed the contract because of its length. “We weren’t prepared for the three

team, becoming a supervisor — I feel I’ve been lucky in a lot of ways.” Throughout his 20 years on the team, Gregory said he has been able to gain a lot of experience, specializing in such areas as sniper/marksman, chemical munitions/diversionary devices and as a tactical instructor. He said he has also had the opportunity to work on joint operations with other agencies such as the FBI, DEA, Ohio State Highway Patrol and other SWAT agencies. He said he joined the SWAT team not only to participate in taking criminals off the street but to stop drug trafficking and put drug dealers out of business. “I felt joining the SWAT team would give me a chance to fight back and make a difference,” he said. Gregory was born and raised in Jamestown,
Ohio. He said after he graduated from high school, he was interested in studying architecture and took a few classes at The Ohio State University in 1980. “That turned out not to be my calling so I left school and went from job to job to figure out what I wanted to do,” Gregory said. He ended up befriending a couple of Columbus police officers and was swayed toward looking at a career in law enforcement. In November 1987, he applied for a position as a patrol officer in Reynoldsburg and was hired by then-chief Jess Moore. Soon afterward, he enrolled in the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy for training and started patrolling the streets. He was promoted to sergeant in 1999. See SWAT LEADER, page A2
Representatives from the Franklin County Auditor’s office gave fifth-graders at Waggoner Road Middle School a hands-on lesson last week about the importance of accurate weights and measures. The first week of March is National Weights and Measures Week, marking the time when former President John Adams signed the national weights and measures law into effect on March 2, 1799. Inspectors from Franklin County Auditor Clarence Mingo’s office volunteered their time March 3 to teach students about the importance of proper weights and measures and their role in commerce. “Americans seldom question the quantity statement on a package, the scale at a check stand or the gallons they put into their cars and even fewer would know who is responsible for instilling that confidence,” said Dave O’Neil, director of communications for the auditor’s office. He said the weights and measures inspectors’ purpose is to protect Franklin County’s economy and system of commerce for both consumers and merchants by checking accuracy. For example, they inspect and check accuracy at the gas pumps to make sure each pump dispenses an exact gallon of gas when one is purchased, O‘Neil said. He said every year, officials from the Franklin County Auditor’s Office conduct more than 8,500 inspections throughout the county. During the event at Waggoner Road Middle School, students used scales and weights supplied by the inspectors to perform various exercises. Fifth-grade math teacher Laura Weaver said the presentation was important to the students because they got a real world, hands-on activity that taught them about weights and measures instead just reading about it in a textbook. “We have to teach capacity conversions, like with pints, quarts, gallons and cups, and the different measures they do in the real world, like scales used at a grocery store to make sure they’re accurate,” Weaver said. “It’s very crucial they understand the measurements because it will be on their state testing.” She said the program offered by the inspectors “applies it in a hands-on way so that kids with different learning styles can understand it in their own way,” she said. Spring is busy time for city’s code enforcement officers By DAVID S. OWEN ThisWeek Community Newspapers With spring just around the corner, Reynoldsburg’s code enforcement officers are preparing for their busiest time of year. Besides watching for high grass, city code officer Rick Keys said other violations on the rise during spring include overgrown trees, paint peeling off houses and vehicles parked on lawns. Both Keys and code enforcement officer Jim McClean work part-time.
Keys said the highest number of complaints at the start of spring involve high grass. “It’s not uncommon for us to write 20 or 30 grass violations a day during the months of March and April,” he said, noting that most offenders do cut their grass. City code says no lawn can have grass higher than six inches. Keys said if the grass is too high at an occupied property a notice is issued giving the owner seven days to get it cut. If the owner does not comply, the city will have the lawn cut by a parks and recreation employee or
private contractor and will send the bill sent to the property owner. For unoccupied properties, the city can cut the grass and send the bill to the owner, he said. Keys said it costs Reynoldsburg $8 an hour if city employees cut lawns. Private contractors are normally paid $50, plus a $75 administration fee. “Last year, we cut 337 lawns and we recoup those costs by billing the property owner. If they don’t pay, we do a tax lien, on the property,” Keys said. He said typically lawns that are not in
compliance mostly area at homes that are in foreclosure, which means the city may not get paid until the house is sold. Another code issue that comes up in the spring involves trees hanging over sidewalks or streets and paint peeling off buildings. “Through the winter, the paint begins to peel off,” Keys said. “Houses or buildings in violation are usually issued a notice with 28 days to comply.” Throughout the year, code enforcement See CODE ENFORCEMENT, page A3

UNION CONTRACT Continued from page A1 years, but we were fine with the 2-percent,” Councilman Chris Long said. “I wouldn’t say its because of Senate Bill 5 specifically, but the happenings that are going around countrywide right now are naturally on anyone’s mind who are dealing with public budgets and things of that sort.” Councilwoman Leslie Kelly said she voted against the contract because she preferred only a one-year, 2-percent raise deal. “We cannot anticipate what’s coming down the pike with local funding so to me, it makes sense to not make long-term decisions like that,” Kelly said. Councilman Doug Joseph said he also did not agree with a three-year contract. “I was uncomfortable with that. I think we should have something that’s locked in for the duration for all of the wages, benefits and terms,” Joseph said. Councilman Barth Cotner agreed and said he was uncomfortable with the wage reopener factor in the second and third years of the agreement. “I’d like to see where things are going to go and see what kind of position we’re
going to be in to make a better judgment,” Cotner said. “I don’t have any problem with them getting a 2-percent raise this year, and it shows the city is trying to take care of its workers and I believe in that, but to have that contract in place the way it was — it was something I was not comfortable with.” Councilman Nathan Burd said he also was comfortable with a one-year deal but not with the three-year commitment. “I am not sure this particular contact has much to do with Senate Bill 5, but if we’re honest, we’ll all admit that things are going to change if that passes,” Burd said. “Existing contracts, as I understand it, will be allowed to fulfill their term … certainly it could have played into it, but it wasn’t the first thing on my mind,” he said. “I look at every union contract and compare it to the fiscal realities of the city and try to determine whether or not it’s a good deal for the workers and the management. And with this one, we just couldn’t get it done.” Councilman Fred Deskins had no comment on the matter. dowen@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekNews.com

She said last year, the inspectors gave each student a free calculator and this year, gave each student a ruler. “They also brought some punch that the kids used to convert to pints and cups and then they got to drink it,” Weaver said. “I think this kind of event is perfect for them because it shows
applies to their life.” Weaver said the learning experience also applies to a career project in technology each student is required to complete this year using computers. Donovan announces campaign for mayor’s office By DAVID S. OWEN ThisWeek Community Newspapers Reynoldsburg resident Richard L. Donovan announced last week he will seek to oppose incumbent Mayor Brad McCloud in November’s general election. Donovan, 62, said he plans to file his petitions to run as an Independent before the May 5 deadline to have his name placed on the Nov. 8 ballot. Born and raised in Boston, Donovan moved to Reynoldsburg in 1990. He served in the Army, including a tour of duty in Vietnam, from 1968 to 1971. After leaving the military, he worked for AT&T from 1971 until he
retired in 1998. He received a bachelor’s degree with honors in business administration from Fisher College in Boston in 1977. This will be his second run for the mayor’s office. In 2007, after longtime mayor Bob McPherson decided not to run for a sixth term, Donovan entered the race as an Independent, opposing Democrat James Casteel and McCloud, a Republican, who won. Donovan said he ran for mayor then because he didn’t like the direction the city was moving in. “They were ignoring the safety and concerns of the citizens and I wanted to get in there and do something about it,” he said.
Donovan said the issues in his current campaign include improving the appearance and livability of the west side of Reynoldsburg. Richard L. “People seem to Donovan have the connotation that it’s called ‘ghettos burg’ because of that area, and I want to bring it back to the way it used to be — where you could walk the streets any time of day and night and not feel uncomfortable … now you can’t do that,” Donovan said. He said he’d also like to see code

Raymond is a sophomore studying electrical engineering. To be named to the list, students must earn at least a 3.5 GPA.
• Zachary Castle of Reynoldsburg was named to the fall 2010 deans’ list at Columbus College of Art & Design. Castle, a sophomore at CCAD, is majoring in animation. He is a 2009 graduate of Reynoldsburg High School and is the son of Jamie and Shani Castle.
To be named to the dean’s list, students must achieve between a 3.00 and a 3.39 GPA • Nic Britton of Reynoldsburg was named to the January 2011 session dean’s list at the University of Northwestern Ohio. He is a student in the College of Technologies and is maintaining a 3.5 GPA.
enforcement “brought up to snuff,” more action taken to improve city streets and increased attention paid to drivers who violate traffic laws. “We’ve got some really, really good people working for the city,” he said. “I just want to make sure they have all the tools necessary for them to compete with other cities to get people to move to Reynoldsburg. “If it’s a dump, people won’t move here, but if it’s a real nice place to live and it looks good, and it’s comfortable, guess what? People will start moving here instead of other places.” Donovan said he believes running as an Independent gives him an advantage.
officers deal with trash cans and recycling bins placed in front of houses or businesses. According to Keys, city code says trash cans, bags or recycling bins must be stored at the side or rear of a building or inside a garage or enclosed structure. Trash cans and recycling bins can be placed at the curb after noon on Wednesday, the day before Reynoldsburg’s normal trash collection day on Thursday. Empty trash cans and recycling bins must be removed within 12 hours after refuse is picked up, he said. Parking vehicles on a lawn is also considered a code violation, Keys said.
“It has to be parked on a hard surface, which means the driveway or the street,” he said. “Generally, we receive good compliance with vehicles but failure to comply would result in a citation being issued and/or reinspection fees being levied, with the option to appeal.” Keys said all notices handed out by code enforcement officers are entered into a database that is checked each morning. All city code violations are treated as minor misdemeanors, he said. Once a citation is delivered, the property owner can take it to mayor’s court to either appeal it or pay a fine that is determined by the magistrate. The maximum fine could be up to $150.

“It seems to me the two-party system means there’s two different groups that are doing battle, and the one that wins gets to enjoy all the spoils of war,” Donovan said. “When they go and enjoy all the spoils, they wreak havoc on future generations because somebody’s going to pay for what they’ve done with their spoils. “Being an independent, I don’t have to worry about pleasing any party, all I have to do is please everybody … I don’t have to be politically correct, I just have to be correct, and that is what I’m going to be,” he said.

City development director Lucas Haire said the idea is to avoid violations by making sure property owners are informed of city codes and for landlords to educate their tenants about them. “Our hope is they would let their tenants know the codes, let them know our trash day is Thursdays, and to keep the trash cans free from view. You can’t keep them (trash cans) out all week,” Haire said. Keys said any resident or business owner who wants to file a complaint can call the code enforcement office at (614) 3226802.

Introducing
Pickerington Primary Care
John “Jay” Passias, DO, Peter Martin, DO, Robert Sears, MD
As it were
Some of the basics taught ‘office boys’ still good today About a century ago, Columbus, like much of the rest of America, was coping with change. A mostly rural agricultural society was rapidly becoming an urban and industrial nation. The process had begun shortly after the end of the American Civil War and would not really end until well into the 20th century. In fact, it would not be until well into the 1920s that most Ohioans would be living in or near its large cities. But at the turn of the century, the great need of new businesses was not simply for more workers with strong backs and boundless energy, although such people would always be welcome. Just as important was the need for a whole new generation of white collar workers to help handle the administrative and managerial tasks of the new world of “modern business.” In an era when most young people did not go much beyond the eighth grade in the public school system, large numbers of students missed out on the useful training that a “business course” in Columbus’s one and only high school could provide. But the need for young people in the new offices created by new businesses was still there. To meet that need, other community organizations tried to be of help. Important among them was the Young Men’s Christian Association or YMCA. Brought to Columbus in 1855 by Henry B. Carrington — a man who would later go on to some renown in the Civil War and the Indian Wars that followed — the YMCA became an important social organization. By 1893, it had established itself in a nice building at 30 S. Third St. in Columbus. In this building, young men could participate in physical education programs, religious meetings and a wide variety of educational courses. One course, taught by Homer Niday, was called “The Business Boys Training School.” Mr. Niday, the head bookkeeper at the American Savings Bank, asserted that with his course, “the question of breaking in a new office boy is settled to the satisfaction of all concerned.” Looking at a summary of Mr. Niday’s course that appeared in the local press at the time, we can learn something of both what has changed and what has not changed in local business education. “At present there are 15 boys in the ‘Business Boys Training School’ ranging in age from 15 to 18 years. Promptly at seven of o’clock, they came in — brightfaced, alert, quick-stepping youngsters, whose every attitude showed they were there for business. “ And what exactly did these young men — and they were all men, as the office was no place for a lady — learn in their classes at the YMCA? “Complete mastery of typewriters of all makes, and the clever art of keeping the machines clean, oiled and in good order, proper punctuation and neatness with all copy “ “How to write a check; how to indorse a check; how to give a receipt; how to deposit money at the bank and how to give out change.
“How to answer telephone calls and the importance of always being courteous, even to the most peevish caller. ED “How to LENTZ manipulate the adding machine; how to make mimeograph copies; how to file papers and clippings; how to open and sort the mail and place it neatly for the man ‘higher-up’. “How to write, fold and stamp letters with accurate neatness.” Reading through all of this, anybody who has recently worked in an office will notice how much has changed from a century ago. First and foremost, there will soon be as many office girls as office boys. And while complete mastery of office machines is important, most of them do not today require all that much oiling. Similarly, most adding machines have been replaced by pocket calculators and the mimeograph is now a museum exhibit rather than a means of making copies. Despite all of these technical differences between that time and our own, Homer Niday left his students with certain pieces of advice: “Be ‘Johnnie on the Spot’ when needed.” “The business world has no place for the laggard, even a new office boy.” “When you go anywhere to represent your firm, show that you are proud of it.” “When you answer a telephone or greet a caller, be courteous and pleasant.” “Remember that office boys grow up very gradually and that there is sure promotion for the lad who is sincere, energetic and reliable.” “Study your employer’s business and interests and aim to
make yourself valuable to him from the very first day you enter his office” While most of us will not be called upon soon to oil a typewriter or operate a mimeograph, the general advice as to deportment and discipline given by Mr. Niday is just as valuable today as it was more than a century ago. The newspaper article from more than century ago concluded optimistically, “That the business world has no place for laggards, even a new office boy, is the A B C D of this school for hustlers. That there is always room ‘higher up’ for the faithful boy is an incentive which is not overlooked. “The boys in Mr. Niday’s class will certainly be well qualified for their work when they ‘graduate.’ The course is six months long with lessons twice each week, Tuesday evenings and Thursday evenings … “A few years hence, the commercial life of the city will doubtless be represented in many ways and in various locations throughout the world by the men who, as boys, received their first lessons in business at the “Business Boys Training School” at the Columbus YMCA.” In a few years, the business school of the Columbus YMCA would leave and over the course of time become Franklin University. The YMCA itself would move in 1924 to its new home on Spring Street. The old building would be removed and an entirely new building would be built to be the home of The Columbus Dispatch. And Mr. Niday’s boys? While their names remain unknown, I would like to believe that they went on to some success. They certainly seemed to be well prepared to do so.
These three experienced and well-known physicians will join the OhioHealth family on April 11. While we renovate a new office for them in Pickerington, Drs. Etna Township Zoning Commission
Only senior housing The Columbus allowed for 310 site Division of Fire 2011 Firefighter Application Dates
By MICHAEL J. MAURER ThisWeek Community Newspapers The residential portions of a planned mixed-use development along state Route 310 will include only senior condominiums for ages 55 and older, according to a presentation to the Etna Township Zoning Commission March 2. The commissioners closed the required public hearing on the project, proposed near the Cumberland Trail Golf Course, and will meet March 16 to vote on final recommendations to the township trustees on both zoning and the preliminary development plan. “The only residential use in the entire development is senior single-family housing,” township zoning administrator Chris Harkness said. “Next to Cumberland Trail Golf Course they have permitted some nursing-care facilities and attached single-family condos that will be age restricted at 55 (years old and older).” The developers, JBW Properties, have proposed a planned mix-use development on 86 acres on each side of state Route 310. It would include retail development along the roadway and residential development behind it. “There are also two residential areas in the development: one on the east side and one on the west side of (state Route) 310, and both of those will be detached single-family residential condominiums that are age restricted over age 55 as well.” When the project was proposed earlier this year, it included the potential for ordinary single-family homes, but as modified March 2, the project will include only senior housing. “The original submission had the ability to do both age-restricted and regular single-family con-

dominiums and also regular single-family lots,” Harkness said. “Now it’s boiled down to singlefamily condominiums that are age restricted.” Harkness said townships typically do not have the ability to enforce age restrictions in the zoning code but that the commissioners believe the proposal submitted March 2 could be enforced. “We’re hoping for some feedback from the prosecutor’s office on this, to ensure we can enforce this,” Harkness said. “Normally, as a township we would not be able to enforce age restrictions through zoning, but the way this is written, we think this does give us more or less that authority, in a kind of roundabout way.” The amendments included the use of standardSee ETNA TOWNSHIP, page A6

or allow the less-stringent private street standard. As the proposal stands, the development will include a major access road both east and west of Route 310, to be built as public roads that would be turned over to the township for maintenance. The remaining streets in the development would be private streets maintained by the property owners. “Private streets do have to be built to the subdivision regulation standards of the county, but they are not quite as stringent,” Harkness said. “Even if the streets are built well, the question is how well a homeowners association or business association could maintain the streets.”

by Greg VanHorssen BUSINESS IS BOOMING! Just as Baby Boomers are settling into middle age, a revolution of sorts is taking place in the world of hearing instruments. Since its introduction in 2005, the open-fit hearing instrument has been a resounding success. The open-fit design brings greater wearing comfort, it is less noticeable than traditional behind-the-ear (BTE) instruments, and it provides users with more natural sound. On top of these advantages, open-fit hearing instruments are perfectly suited to the type of hearing loss that Baby Boomers are likely to experience: mild to moderate high-frequency hearing loss. Moreover, open-fit instruments have a minimalist design that is in keeping with Boomer’s active lifestyles. Is this all coincidence or just a matter of good fortune? Boomers will decide. People stay younger by hearing better, whether with an open-fit or BTE hearing instrument. The type of hearing aid that is the best choice for an individual is based on many factors, including the size and shape of the ear, the type and degree of the hearing loss, and the individual’s typical listening environment. At ABSOLUTE HEARING SOLUTIONS, our experienced staff is committed to determining the most appropriate hearing device for each patient’s needs. Great deals, healthy meals and Asian flavors at Poong Mei From its sign outside, Poong Mei — aka Spring of China — claims it’s a Chinese restaurant. And you do pass through a red-and-gold imperial-type “China gate” by G.A. Benton portal to enter the place’s dining room. But one gaze at Poong Mei’s menu or the food laid out on its busy tables (many is more Chinese than Japanese, neither filled with obvious regulars) informs you is the dominant ethnicity. Because while that while this self-described “Asian bistro” Poong Mei certainly has Chinese and Japanese appendages, its head, heart, body and soul are purely Korean. Ambience-wise, Poong Mei is neither particularly distinguished nor bad looking. Lived-in but not dumpy, it’s got a sort of past-its-prime, small-town country club vibe. Likely its most standout features are a huge, sports-tuned projection TV and goofy, piped-in stringy music, By Dan Sohner/ThisWeek which could’ve been exCuddled Tofu Soup with Beef Short Rib at Poong Mei. humed from the sound-

tracks of melodramatic ’70s movies. So the food’s the thing at Poong Mei — and fortunately, the food is very good. A sensational shareable starter was an octet of obviously homemade Steamed Pork Buns ($8). Served on a steaming metal tray, they were beautiful snowwhite pillows with puffy, delicate, meltin-your-mouth textures and lovely, mildly fermented, sourdough-like flavors. Inside each was a wildly juicy scallionflecked clump of lusty, sausagey ground pork. Also great was a more robust group meal-igniter which could equally serve as a large entree for a single diner — Seafood Noodle Soup ($10, comes with a fine array of “ban chan,” small plates). In a super fragrant, medium spicy red broth were Poong Mei’s phenomenal housemade noodles (long, thin, silky and springy) plus bits of tender seafood-like green mussels, little shrimp, cuttlefish and octopus. A handful of veggies — like sweet carrots and earthy greens — rounded out the bowl’s happily married flavors.

A bold, garlicky and mildly spicy chili broth held lots of wiggly bits of silky tofu plus veggies such as unmushy zucchini and cloud ear mushrooms. At the last second, a raw egg had been dropped into the gurgling hot broth — and I was amazed how much it enriched the soup when I broke the egg’s yolk and stirred it through the quick-cooking pot. But wait, there was more! The supersatisfying, lean soup (which included ban chan) had a fatty accomplice in the form
of irresistible kalbi (three bone-in shortribs) slathered in a sweet, thick sort of barbecue sauce. Poong Mei’s terrific housemade noodles were the basis for a dramatically allblack stir-fried Zhang Mun ($11). Looking like a dish of squid ink-sauced pasta but tasting like the marvelous (if a bit greasy) Asian stir-fry it really was, this nifty noodle-athon united pork, tiny shrimp, a lot of onions, veggies and assorted seafood bits in a salty fermented black bean sauce. Whether it’s that Chinese-style dish, or a neat Chinese-Korean hybrid like Shredded Pork with Hot Pepper ($12) or a great, straight-up Korean Hot Stone BiBim-Bob ($10), Poong Mei does it well, inexpensively and with genuine flavors. Factory worker returns to food industry After working factory jobs both in Delaware and in central Ohio, Anuson “Chris” Khumauksorn is once again pursuing his love of cooking and the restaurant business. The Bangkok native has opened Taste of Thai in the Polaris area, replacing Ha Long Bay, a Vietnamese restaurant at 8489 Sancus Blvd. The menu offers a wide range of Thai classics, from tom yum soup to pad Thai to shredded
papaya salad. Most entrees are in the $9 to $11 range, with a few of the house specialties costing around $15. Owning a restaurant — and being its chef — isn’t exactly what Khumauksorn had in mind. Sure, he helped his mother run a restaurant in his native Thailand,
while also earning a bachelor’s degree in business management. A cousin who owned a restaurant in Florida beckoned, so Khumauksorn and his family moved to the Sunshine State to help. He removed himself from the restaurant industry for several years and moved to Ohio with his wife. Yet he longed to return to the business and staked out a location in the Polaris area, which currently has a lot of restaurants but no Thai.

Taste of Thai owner Anuson “Chris” Khumauksorn prepares his pad Thai with rice noodles, shrimp, chicken, eggs, ground peanuts, beansprouts and scallion in pad Thai sauce.
The interior – and store sign – at Taste of Thai is bright yellow for a reason, as the color symbolizes warmth and cheerfulness, he said. He said there’s still a learning curve for some customers, who tend to group all Asian cuisines together. Or they have another stigma about Thai. “People think of Thai food as spicy, hot,” he said. Therefore, he makes it clear that he will adjust the spice level to the diner’s preference. For now, there is no alcohol, but Khumauksorn said he intends to apply for a license to sell wine and beer. Taste of Thai is open for lunch and dinner daily. For more information, call 614-436-3735. Fresh off the opening of the successful San-Su, Yun Hui “Yumi” Wada has another restaurant planned for Bethel Road. Aoi, a Japanese restaurant, will take over the 5,000-square-foot building that once housed Einstein Bros. Bagels and Boston Market, 876-878 Bethel Road. The menu will feature sushi, noodle dishes, tempura and the like. It is expected to open in May. Meanwhile, Wada has leased San-Su, a Korean restaurant, to Jae Uk Jong. Wada is the founder of the two local Genji Japanese Steakhouses, among other enterprises.

Boys team faces Eagles for district championship By CORY STEGER ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Points figure to be at a premium when the Hartley High School boys basketball team plays Watterson in a Division II district title game at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 10, in the Fairgrounds Coliseum. The CCL rivals played twice during the regular season, with Hartley winning 37-30 on Feb. 11 and 34-32 on Jan. 14. Watterson likes to control the pace with its zone defense and deliberate offense, but it’s nothing the top-seeded Hawks haven’t seen before, coach Randy Kortokrax said. “I’m excited about the game. It’s going to be a good CCL battle, and maybe the first team to 20 (points) will win,” he said. “The nice thing is we don’t need to see tape. We already know they’re going to zone the heck out of us, we’re

Raiders’ coach happy with team’s progress By AARON BLANKENSHIP ThisWeek Community Newspapers
The Reynoldsburg High School wrestling team’s eight-year streak of sending at least one athlete to the Division I state tournament came to an end this year. Nevertheless, coach Jared Ball was pleased with the progress his wrestlers made over the course of the 2010-11 season. “We didn’t reach all of our goals, but we became a much stronger team as the season continued,” Ball said. “We saw a lot of kids who were struggling at the beginning of the year develop and improve across the board.” The Raiders finished sixth in the OCCOhio Division with a 2-5 dual match
record, behind co-champions Lancaster (6-1) and Pickerington Central (6-1), Gahanna (5-2), Pickerington North (4-3) and Grove City (3-4), and ahead of Groveport (1-6) and Newark (0-7). “Our OCC matches were frustrating because there were very few times that we were able to field a full lineup because of injuries and skin issues,” Ball said. “But with what we’ve got coming back, we should be a top-two team in our conference moving forward because we lose less than everyone else.” Reynoldsburg scored 93 points to place eighth in the 13-team sectional tournament Feb. 19 at Westland behind champion Lancaster (180). Four Raiders placed in the top four of their weight classes to qualify for district. Junior Greg Chang went 3-1 and placed

trict is a huge positive moving forward,” Ball said. Reynoldsburg then scored 25.5 points to tie Grove City for 23rd at district behind champion Olentangy Liberty (128.5) as 44 teams scored. Chang (3-2 at 112) and Straughter (42 at 103) both placed fifth, and Boykin (125) and Reed (189) both went 0-2. “We’re going to take what we learned from this experience and use it next year,” Chang said. The Raiders lose two senior starters in Syfers, who finished 25-16 at 140, and Dalton Hoover, who finished 26-12 at 160. Expected to return are juniors Boykin (17-23 at 125), Chang (32-9 at 112), Straughter (31-11 at 103), Donald Fuller (18-19 at 215) and Lawrence Tackett (18-
19 at 119), sophomores Johnston (19-16 at 152) and Reed (23-21 at 189), and freshmen Justin Hamilton (0-2 at heavyweight), James Love (12-15 at 171) and Andrew McBane (0-15 at 130). “Dalton wrestled real solid for us the past few years and it will be tough to replace Brad’s leadership,” Ball said. “(Chang and Straughter) were frontrunners for us, as expected, but we were surprised by how successful some of our less-experienced guys were. With our pay-to-participate fee dropping from $500 to $240 this year, our numbers climbed from 23 to 35, and we have 12 freshmen, which is a good number to help us develop some depth in the years to come.” ablankenship@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com
Club Hockey
PRPC, state qualifiers hope to regain traction By KURTIS ADAMS ThisWeek Community Newspapers
At a glance
Hilliard was dominant in winning the Greater Columbus High School Club Hockey League’s Blue Jackets Cup for the first time. The Wildcats won all four games, outscoring their opponents by a combined score of 23-5. Casey Fulton, a senior wing player from Hilliard Davidson, anchored the effort offensively with seven points, including five assists. Matt Hannan, a junior center from Darby, scored four goals and totaled five points, and goaltenders Doug Martin, a senior from Jonathan Alder, and Gage Robison, a junior from Franklin Heights, posted two victories apiece. Hilliard defeated Northeast 6-2 in the final, but that game was played Feb. 20. That means that the four GCHSCHL qualifiers for the Buckeye Cup state club tournament — Hilliard, Northeast, PRPC and Newark — will enter the seventh-year event having not played a meaningful game in nearly three weeks. The state tournament runs Friday, March 11, through Sunday, March 13, in Canton and Wooster. “You just have to make sure your practices are (conducted at) game speed,” first-year Hilliard coach Mark Mead said. “We’ve done a lot of inner-squad scrimmages and scrimmaged against some of the other local teams. That’s about all we can do to stay ready and be prepared.” Newark and Northeast were among the league’s best teams during the second half of the regular season. The Generals went 7-2-1 down the stretch to forge a tie for fourth with Athens, and they won the tiebreaker to qualify for the Buckeye Cup for a fifth consecutive season by finishing 1211-1 in the GCHSCHL with 25 points. They followed a similar path to state in previous years, capturing the state title in 2009. “We worked the magic again,” Newark coach Don Jennings said. “It was just another amazing late-season run. Every game we played at the end was a playoff game, really.”
Below is the schedule for the Buckeye Cup state club hockey tournament: MARCH 11 — 5:30 p.m., PRPC vs. North Royalton (Canton), Mason vs. Painesville Riverside (Wooster); 7:30 p.m., Liberty Township Lakota East vs. Newark (Canton), Hilliard vs. Oxford Butler County (Wooster); 9:30 p.m., Jackson vs. Bellbrook (Canton), Medina vs. Northeast (Wooster); MARCH 12 — 8 a.m., PRPC vs. Mason (Canton); 8:20 a.m., Newark vs. Riverside (Wooster); 10 a.m., Jackson vs. Hilliard (Canton); 11:30 a.m., North Royalton vs. Butler County (Wooster); noon, Lakota East vs. Medina (Canton); 1:30 p.m., Bellbrook vs. Northeast (Wooster); 5 p.m., Riverside vs. PRPC (Canton), Mason vs. Newark (Wooster); 7 p.m., Butler County vs. Jackson (Canton), Hilliard vs. North Royalton (Wooster); 9 p.m., Northeast vs. Lakota East (Canton), Medina vs. Bellbrook (Wooster); MARCH 13 — 8 a.m., No. 1 seed vs. No. 4 seed semifinal (Canton); 10 a.m., No. 2 seed vs. No. 3 seed semifinal (Canton); 4 p.m., final (Canton)
The trick now for Newark is to regain the momentum it might have lost given that the regular season concluded Feb. 13. The Generals went 0-2 in the Blue Jackets Cup, as did regular-season league champion PRPC. PRPC finished first in the GCHSCHL at 15-7-2 with 32 points as Hilliard and Northeast both finished 14-7-3 with 31 points. The Storm went 8-2 to end the regular season but lost twice to Hilliard in the Blue Jackets Cup. It played six games in the tournament over three days, including three in a 24hour period. “You can practice and scrimmage all you want, but it’s not the same,” Northeast coach Mark Fixari said. “There’s nothing like a real game to keep you sharp.” The 12-team field for the state tournament also features Liberty Township Lakota East, Mason, Oxford Butler County and Bellbrook after they finished in the top four of the Cincinnati High School League. Lakota East was the regularseason champion at 19-3 with 22 points. The Cleveland-based North Coast Hockey League, on the other hand, awards its four state berths following the comple-
tion of its postseason tournament, which is a spread over two weeks and ended March 5. The state qualifiers were Jackson, Medina, Painesville Riverside and North Royalton. Jackson was the regular-season champion at 10-0-1 with 21 points. “It’s absolutely a different situation,” Jennings said. “Our league has battled against waiting three weeks to play the state tournament, but Jackson, as the host team, won. Once the weather warms, it’s extremely hard holding onto the players as the spring sports get started. If this keeps up, we’ll have to address maybe moving the start of our regular season back another week.” Northeast has been practicing without one of its top defensemen, New Albany senior Colin Laviola, a Division I college lacrosse hopeful who is struggling to fulfill obligations in both sports as the hockey season drags on. There could be some positives that come out of the delay, however. For example, PRPC slumped toward the end of the regular season as injuries mounted. The Ice Prowlers still won’t have leading scorer Kyle Hyer, a Pickerington North sophomore who is out with a broken collarbone, but defenseman Sean Straker has had more time to recover from a concussion that kept him out of the Blue Jackets Cup. He is expected to play, as is Newark left wing Tyler Russell after he missed the tournament because of mononucleosis. In addition, Newark center Thomas Nichols has been cleared to play following a shoulder injury. Hilliard should benefit from getting right wing Drew Kennedy, a junior from Darby, back on the ice for the first time since December. He helped key the Wildcats’ 14-0 start before suffering a knee injury. See PRPC, page B3

“That being said, it’s never easy. We’ve been there time and time again and haven’t won it yet.” The state tournament will be played using the five-point system. Teams play three pool games and the top four point scorers advance to the semifinals. One point is awarded for winning a period, and teams split that point in the case of a tie. The winning team in each game receives an additional two points. All four local coaches are in agreement that three of the four semifinalists could come from the GCHSCHL. “That might very well happen,” Mead said. “We’ve played some tight games with each other and that should continue because we’re all fairly even. Of course, it’s hard telling what the affect might be from the layoff.”
PRPC is the only team in any of the three leagues to qualify for the Buckeye Cup every year since the state tournament’s inception in 2005. Medina won the first two titles before West Chester Lakota West took the championship the following season. Athens was the first GCHSCHL team to win the state title in 2008. Lakota East is the defending state champion, but it lost early in the CHSHL’s tournament as Bellbrook defeated Mason in the final. Hilliard advanced to state for a third consecutive season and fourth time overall. Northeast is making its second appearance, having first reached state in 2009. “Top to bottom, I think Columbus is a little stronger than the other two kadams@thisweeknews.com leagues,” PRPC coach Joe Tonello said. www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com

13 seconds left. Hamilton Township led 33-30 at halftime. Hartley tied the score at 43 on a steal and basket by Eric Siefert with 4:21 left in the third quarter. Siefert then gave the Hawks their first lead at 46-43 on a 3-pointer with 2:48 left. The Hawks broke a 46-all tie by opening the final period on an 11-0 run. Hamilton Township missed its three field-goal attempts and turned the ball over twice during the run. The Rangers didn’t score their first points of the quarter until the 3:48 mark. Sherrod scored 22 points, Siefert had 16 and Collins added 13 for Hartley. “We knew they could shoot, so we were expecting them to hit some 3s,” Sherrod said. “We just knew we had to pick up the intensity and don’t get down on ourselves.” The winner of the Hartley-Watterson contest advances to a regional semifinal at 8 p.m. March 17 at Ohio University against Zanesville or Wintersville Indian Creek. Those teams played a district final March 9. •Evan Jackson represented the wrestling team at the Division II state tournament, which was March 3-5 at Ohio State, and he made up for his early exit from state last year. Jackson competed at 215 pounds and placed seventh, a year after going 0-2 at state. Jackson defeated Licking Valley’s Chase Redman 4-3 in the seventh-place match. Jackson defeated Wauseon’s Zane Krall 2-0 in the first round. “It probably wasn’t as pretty as we would’ve liked it to be, but that first win was good,” coach Kevin Petrella said. After beating Krall, Jackson lost 7-5 to Springfield Shawnee’s Nathan Silvus in a quarterfinal and dropped
into the consolation bracket. He defeated Cody Thompson of Mansfield Madison 10-5 in his first consolation match, but then he lost to St. Paris Graham’s Mark Meyer 5-2. The loss to Meyer moved Jackson into the seventh-place match. “I wanted to come in confident because last year I went 0-2 (at state),” Jackson said after defeating Krall. “The difference (from last year) is I knew what the experience of coming here was going to be like.” Jackson’s performance scored five points for Hartley, which tied for 56th with Bellevue, Hamilton Township, Licking Valley and Ravenna behind champion St. Paris Graham (230.5). At the district tournament Feb. 2526 at Columbus East, the Hawks finished 14th (51) behind champion Olentangy (158.5). Jackson was a district champion. At sectional Feb. 19 at Hilliard Bradley, the Hawks were fifth (130.5) behind champion Olentangy (292). Jackson was a sectional champion and Jarrod Zang was a runner-up at 160. The CCL tournament was Feb. 12 at Watterson. The Hawks finished fourth (137) behind champion Ready (256.5), DeSales (183.5) and St. Charles (150) and ahead of Watterson (48). Hartley loses seniors Jordan Dickerson (heavyweight), Jackson, Drake Jones (152) and Jason Mercier (125). Key athletes expected to return include juniors Napoleon Bell (189), Albert Davis (160), Brian Grimes (130) and Zang, sophomore Dominique Scott (103) and freshmen Jacob Croswell (135) and Grant Rathburn (119). •The season came to an end for the boys bowling team in the district tournament Feb. 26 at HP Lanes. The Hawks finished seventh (3,835) be-
hind champion Westerville Central (4,168). Only the top three teams advanced to state. The sectional tournament was Feb. 18 at Eastland Lanes. The boys were champions (4,231) ahead of Westerville South (4,174) and Groveport (4,052). The girls finished 10th (2,790) behind champion South (3,531). The Hawks had successful showings in their inaugural season in the Central Ohio High School Bowling Conference-Central Division. The boys were division champions (13-0) ahead of St. Charles (92), Brookhaven (10-3), Centennial (10-3), Northland (8-5), Ready (85), Watterson (8-5), Beechcroft (5-7), Mifflin (5-7), Columbus West (3-7), Columbus Academy (3-10), Grandview (3-10), Linden-McKinley (19) and Haugland Learning Center (0-13). St. Charles, West and Linden did not complete full league schedules because of weather postponements and cancellations. The girls tied for second (9-2) with Northland and Ready behind champion Watterson (11-0) and ahead of Brookhaven (6-5), Columbus Academy (6-5), West (4-6), Centennial (47), Beechcroft (3-7), Mifflin (3-8), Grandview (1-10) and Haugland (010). West, Beechcroft and Haugland did not complete full league schedules. The boys lose seniors Jaren Lewis, Nick Owens and Cody Peruzzi. Top bowlers expected back are sophomores William Ball and Chad Clites and freshman Corey Wilbur. The girls will have to do some rebuilding after losing seniors Rachael Ahler, Emily Albert, Emily Strapp and Leah Welsh. Freshman Katie Owens is expected to return, but should would be the only starter to do so. www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com
