City mulls additional crosswalk safety By JENNIFER NOBLIT ThisWeek Community Newspapers

A week after Dublin police filed charges in a traffic crash that killed a pedestrian, council members are still mulling safety improvements at the Historic Dublin crosswalk where the incident took place.

Dublin City Council members this week got the price tag for the installation of the HAWK system that would notify both pedestrians and motorists at the crosswalk at the intersection of North and N. High Street. In January council members instructed city engineer Paul Hammersmith to look into the system for the crosswalk. Es-

timated cost for installation, which includes syncing timing with the traffic light at Bridge and High streets, is $575,000. The HAWK system, which stands for high-intensity activated crosswalk, is “similar to a traffic signal, but was developed specifically for pedestrian crossings,” the January staff report said. The

pedestrian-activated system would include “Walk” and “Don’t Walk” signs for pedestrians as well as flashing and solid red and yellow lights to caution vehicles of pedestrians in the crosswalk. “The dollar amount is extremely significant,” council member Michael Keenan said during the Feb. 28 meeting. “It’s much more than I would have

A 51-acre development that could bring 46 units to Dublin Road drew traffic concerns from neighboring residents. Dublin City Council heard the first reading of requested rezoning and a preliminary development plan Feb. 28 that could bring nine estate lots and 37 cluster lots to 51.7 acres on the northeast corner of Dublin Road and Memorial Drive. Development plans for the area have been under way since 1984, when the north area of the property was platted for 11 estate lots that were intended to be Deer Run Estates. Several other ideas have been proposed, but the most recent preliminary plan, which received approval from the Planning and Zoning Commission last month, has 46 singleunit residences and 10 acres of open space. The land is currently zoned as restricted suburban residential and the developer is requesting a planned unit development district. The northern part of the property would house the nine estate lots, which would be at least two acres and have access to Dublin Road, said Dublin planner Jennifer Rauch. The southern part of the development, which is set to host 37 cluster lots on 60- to 70-foot-wide

By JENNIFER NOBLIT An agreement with ODOT approved by Dublin City Council this week will start preliminary studies that will eventually bring improvements to the Interstate 270 and U.S. Route 33 interchange. The agreement between Dublin and the Ohio Department of Transportation received unanimous approval from council on Feb. 28. It shored up funding between the two entities for the preliminary studies, which are expected to be completed by December, engineer manager Jean-Ellen Willis said. “This is very preliminary,” she said. A partnership with ODOT brought $2-million in federal funding for preliminary engineering and environmental field studies. Dublin has agreed to pay $500,000. Dublin started applying for grants for the project in 2009. Willis told Dublin City Council in 2009 that there have been no “major changes” to the I-270/U.S. 33 cloverleaf interchange since it was built in 1967. The interchange is 20 percent over capacity and is 10th in the state for freeway crashes, Willis has said. In working with ODOT for a traffic solution, the first phase of the project will be a northbound to westbound flyover ramp that will be built over the existing highway, Willis has said. The construction of the first phase is expected to cost $33-million, offi-

anticipated.” In the staff report, Hammersmith recommended council consider installing a curb bump at the crosswalk that would replace about six feet of pavement on the east side of North High Street with grass and sidewalk.

A mixed-use development proposed for Historic Dublin has been deemed too big by members of the Architectural Review Board. The development, which plans to include office, retail and residential on 1.13 acres between North Black Smith Lane and North Riverview Street, appeared before the Architectural Review Board Feb. 23 for informal review and feedback. The development is in the early stages. Dublin planner Dan Phillabaum said informal review is followed by a concept plan, rezoning and a preliminary and final development plan. “It’s a bit of a long and winding road,” he said. As it stands, the development proposes 27,600 square feet of office space, 6,300 square feet of retail, 7,000 square feet of restaurant and patio space, See INFORMAL MIXED-USE, page A2

Informal mixed-use plan draws size, parking concerns Continued from page A1 30 residential condos and 160 parking spaces. “A single, four-level structure will integrate the mix of uses,” the proposal said. “Retail spaces will be located at the south end of the building on the first floor, where access and visibility from Bridge Street is best. The space is envisioned to include a restaurant with a patio dining area overlooking the river and the street. Office space will be provided on the second and third floor above the retail space. Residential condominiums will be provided on the first, second and third floors further north… Private parking for the condominiums will be provided on the lower level of the building, accessed from Riverview Street.”

The development also proposes public parking on the lower level of the building, along Riverview Street and North Blacksmith Lane. More than one acre between North Riverview Street and the Scioto River is also included in the proposal, but no development is planned for the area. Phillabaum said the city “may be interested in an expansion” of the Dublin Springs Park. The development would use six parcels between North Blacksmith Lane and North Riverview Street to the east and west, and Bridge Street to the south. Single-family homes are currently on the parcels, Phillabaum said, and six are listed on the state historic registry. Gary Sebach of Bird Houk, who represented the developers, said

owners of the six parcels have “agreed to this development.” The homes, which were built between the mid-1800s and early 1900s, would have to be demolished or moved for the development, which worried a few board members. “In the past we’ve required these structures to be put in the development rather than demolished,” board member Carl Karrer said. The size of the development, especially in comparison with other Historic Dublin buildings, was another concern for board members. The Riverview proposal is 47 feet tall at its highest ridge, Phillabaum said. In comparison, the BriHi Square development stands 38 feet tall at its highest point, he added. “The scale kind of strikes me

Parking was also an issue. According to standards, the development should have more than 300 parking spaces, Franz King said, but only has 160. “Businesses we hope you will lure in here have to be able to do business,” she said. How traffic is handled in the area concerned chair William Souders, especially as the Bridge Street corridor is redeveloped. “Traffic and scale to me are just overriding,” he said. ‘Best legs’ contest to kick off St. Patrick’s Day By JENNIFER NOBLIT ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Legs won’t be the only quality judged at next week’s Best Legs in a Kilt contest. Strutting, confidence and the sway of the kilt will also be taken into consideration. The leggy completion for men in kilts is Historic Dublin’s way of kicking off St. Patrick’s Day festivities. The March 11 contest that starts at 6 p.m. at Ha’penny Bridge Imports at 75 S. High St. will precede Dublin’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade on March 12. Historic Dublin has previously host-

ed a Best Legs contest, but last year Ha’Penny and Dublin Village Tavern partnered for a pre-St. Patrick’s Day competition. “We decided to expand it and partner to make it a precursor for the parade,” Ha’penny owner Anne Gleine said. “It’s tricky to do on Saturday morning before the parade because there are so many people. We thought it would be more fun on Friday night to go to the tavern and get everyone excited.” About a dozen bared their legs for the 2010 competition. Last year’s champ and Dublin branch library director Michael Blackwell said fun was had by all.

“It’s a great opportunity for fellowship. Afterwards you stay at the Dublin Village Tavern and everyone celebrates and has fun,” he said. Blackwell has his own kilt, but Gleine said Ha’penny has some for rental. The contest is $10 to join and a rental kilt ups the registration fee to $15. As of last week about five had registered, but Gleine said sign-ups often happen at the last minute. To join the contest, call Gleine at (614) 889-9615. For anyone mulling over the looks of their legs, Blackwell offered some advice. “Come prepared to strut your stuff, smile, show a lot of energy and show

your flair and just have a great time,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun.” Three judges, including council member Marilee Chinnici-Zuercher and Dublin Chamber of Commerce executive director Margie Amorose, will score the legs based on a few criteria. “We give (the judges) a piece of paper and (the contestants) walk to them and back and then do their best pose,” Gleine said. “They judge on how well they carry themselves, how the kilt sways and overall impressions.” Spirit can also sway the judges – Gleine said a shamrock painted on Blackwell’s chest earned him some extra points last year.

“He flashed the shamrock,” she said. The Best Legs in a Kilt winner gets bragging rights and a $50 gift certificate to the Dublin Village Tavern. Second place is awarded a $40 gift certificate and third place a $30 gift certificate. All contestants will receive a $10 gift certificate to the Dublin Village Tavern. Although the event was characterized as a “friendly competition” by Blackwell, the defending champ was not above smack talking as he prepared last week. “I am going to defend my title this year,” he said. “Competition had better look out because I have big plans.” jnoblit@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekNews.com

Indian Run Elementary celebrating golden anniversary By JENNIFER NOBLIT ThisWeek Community Newspapers

When Indian Run Elementary School opened 50 years ago, it served students in Washington Local Schools, not Dublin City Schools. Dublin City Schools’ oldest elementary school has seen growth, change and now its 50th anniversary since it was constructed on West Bridge Street in 1961. The school will celebrate the milestone March 10. “Congratulations to Indian Run on its 50th,” Superintendent David Axner said in a news release. “We continue to be proud of Indian Run staff and students and wish them a happy anniversary celebration.” According to Principal Janet Rinefierd, next week’s celebration will include special guests, music, school tours and history. “It starts at 4:30 p.m. and from 4:30 to 5:30 there will be a social gathering with hospitality in the commons. During that time there will be a video of historic pictures over the years of students, staff and events for people to enjoy,” she said. Not only is he a former principal, but he’s the grandfather of two students, and his daughter Jenny Kluz works in the library,” Rinefierd said. “He will speak on behalf of former employees and his granddaughters Sophie and Natalie Kluz will speak on behalf of students.” Other special guests, including the man who named the school, will also be there. City mulls additional crosswalk safety Continued from page A1 Vice Mayor Amy Salay suggested looking at safety improvements at other crosswalks in Historic Dublin as well. “We’re looking at more improvements, especially at the Darby Street crosswalk,” said Jean-Ellen Willis, the engineer-manager. Council requested a staff report on possible improvements and the cost of installing a curb bump at the North and

North High Street crosswalk. Several ideas to increase safety in the area, including rumble strips and speed bumps, have been suggested. “A lot of ideas have been tossed out in reaction to what’s happened,” Hammersmith told ThisWeek last week. “The purpose is to make folks aware that this is a location that pedestrians will be crossing.” Improvements, including overhead lighting, placards and additional sig-

nage, have already been added around Historic Dublin. The improvements followed the death of Stephanie Auer of Columbus in December. Dublin police charged Lourdes R. Dudaney, 49, with vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter and failure to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk on Feb. 22 in relation to the crash that killed Auer. Dudaney is expected to appear in the

Franklin County Municipal Court at 9 a.m. March 4. According to a release from Dublin, Dudaney was driving the minivan that struck Auer shortly before 7 p.m. Dec. 28 at the intersection of North and North High streets. Auer died Dec. 30 at the Ohio State University Medical Center. “Both the victim and the driver were not under the influence of alcohol or drugs and according to the investigation, neither appeared to be distracted (by a

cell phone),” said Megan Canavan, public-information officer for Dublin. In the accident report, Dudaney said she didn’t think Auer was in the crosswalk and the pedestrian lights were not flashing. Auer, she said, was also wearing a dark jacket. Witness statements conflicted and said Auer was in the crosswalk, but the lights that warn motorists about pedestrians above the crosswalk were not flashing.

Axner’s new contract: $291K in ’11-12

COUNCIL

Continued from page A1 Continued from page A1 to provide our district with long-term stability by approving a five-year contract with Dr. Axner.” Axner’s first contract was approved by the board of education in May 2007. Dublin recruited him from Chagrin Falls after 17 years with the district. With Axner’s new contract, he received five additional vacation days with the opportunity to purchase five more sick or personal days, annuity increases of two percent for the first two years of the contract and an increase in health care costs, Baker said. Axner’s salary will increase from $182,157 to $184,433 in the 2011-12 school year. His contract puts him on track for raises

cials have said. In other city news, council this week approved the first round of “Beautify Your Neighborhood” grants. The new grant program has $15,000 of funding in 2011 and was created to provide “funding assistance and professional support to city of Dublin homeowners associations for high-quality, sustainable beautification projects that benefit and enhance” Dublin, the staff report said. Applicants can apply for grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 and must offer matching funds. Dublin received requests from Riverside Woods Homeowners Association for $1,585 to add landscaping; Park Place/Post Preserve Homeowners Association for $4,028 to fund fencing, a naturalized meadow area and other improvements; Ballentrae Community Association for $5,000 for flowers at the entrance; Muirfield Association for $5,000 to fund sign replacements; and Bryson Cove Homeowners Association for $2,124 to improve the entrance. The community development committee recommended giving the full requested amount to Riverside Woods and Park Place/Post Preserve, give $4,000 to Ballentrae and $2,000 to Muirfield, and ask Bryson Cove to reapply. Vice Mayor Amy Salay said she thought that the Muirfield project “really wasn’t in the spirit of the beautify your neighborhood grant program.” Council members Michael Keenan, Richard Gerber and Marilee Chinnici-Zuercher disagreed and council eventually voted to follow the recommendations, but grant Muirfield $3,400. jnoblit@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekNews.com

During one of his first interviews with ThisWeek in 2007, Axner said he would like to finish his career in Dublin. This week he echoed those comments. “I think it’s more than true now. It’s final whether this is my last contract or not. This is my last superintendency,” he said. “I couldn’t be more pleased to finish it here in Dublin.” Axner’s contract will run through the 201617 school year and there is a lot of work to be done, he said. “There are a lot of challenges ahead,”Axner said. “We’ve been bracing for the funding issue, but there are also some pretty major curriculum shifts that are going on statewide and nationally that we will have coming.” jnoblit@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekNews.com

in accordance with the administrative salary schedule, which gets raises negotiated recently with teachers, Baker said. The teachers negotiated a 1-percent salary increase in the first year, 1.25-percent increase in the second year and 1.5-percent increase in the third year. Axner will still receive a communications device allowance, vehicle allowance, incentive option if district goals are met and annual longevity payment, but all details remain the same as in his previous contract. Under Axner’s leadership, the district has made $11.5-million in cuts, earned the state ranking of “Excellent with Distinction,” earned the highest possible credit rating from creditors and implemented Progress Book for parents.

To receive dean’s list recognition, students must earn at least a 3.6 grade-point average. • Felisha Goldsmith of Dublin was named to the fall 2010 honors list at Central Ohio Technical College. To earn honors list recognition, students must receive at least a 3.5 GPA.

That will cause traffic, too.” Steve Smith, who also lives near the proposed development, said the developer has been in touch with the homeowners association for a meeting to discuss concerns. City news Spring to bring increase in skunk activity Dublin residents are cautioned as spring approaches and skunks enter mating season. Through late February and March, skunks are more often seen and smelled in residential areas, a news release from the city said. While humans are not usually seen as a threat to the animal, which eats insects and rodents, pets are. Dublin advised residents to monitor pets if there is skunk activity in the area and take other precautions, including: making noise to warn skunks you are approaching; keeping dogs on leashes; adding skirting around decks, crawl spaces and sheds to keep skunks out and away from homes; and keeping lids on trash cans.

For more information on skunks and keeping them from your area, look online at Dublin.oh.us/nature or contact Mìme Migliore at (614) 410-4730.

Black History Month

Karrer students learn, share By JENNIFER NOBLIT ThisWeek Community Newspapers

One assignment had Karrer Middle School eighth-graders discussing Will Smith, Jesse Owens, Dred Scott, Tracy Morgan and Rosa Parks last week. Those names and more appeared on contribution cards crafted by about 300 Karrer eighthgraders in honor of Black History Month; the students chose and researched two people who helped increase the rights and experiences of African Americans. Research began two weeks ago and last week students met to share the cards and information with each other. Kristi Jerger said this is the first time students have made contribution cards for class, but the teaching team that includes Jerg-

er, Meghan Sparks and Heath O’Neal thought making cards and sharing them with other students would be an interactive experience. “It’s the whole idea of sharing what they learned and processing it in a group,” Jerger said. “It’s making meaning. They talk about it and share their ideas instead of regurgitating information.” The three teachers brought their classes together for the sharing of the contribution cards, which means meeting new students. “It’s a special treat,” O’Neal said. “The kids enjoy getting to meet other students,” Sparks added. Students shared cards about Jimi Hendrix, Bill Cosby, Muhammad Ali, JFK and other notable figures. Jerger said students were required to choose

someone from the 18th or 19th centuries and someone anywhere from the 1700s to today. “We encouraged them to look into someone like Harriet Tubman or Fredrick Douglas,” she said. Lewis Armstrong was among Kathleen Serio’s choices. “I learned that even a small contribution can make a big difference,” she said. The social studies teachers formerly looked at reform movements in the U.S., but ended in the Sixties. “We started the unit with Frederick Douglas and then they heard about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad,” Jerger said. “Then we went on to women’s rights.” While sharing his contribution cards last week Matthew Abbott

said he learned a great deal about his contribution card people. “Abraham Lincoln provided legal framework for the abolition of slavery,” he said. “Crispus Attucks died in the Boston Massacre in 1770. He’s considered the first person to die in the American Revolution.” But facts aren’t the only things Abbott learned. “The African-American movement started a long time ago,” he said, adding that he was surprised it had been going on for so long. Jerger said reviewing cards and information with fellow students is all part of the learning experience. “They’re looking back at what they created and it makes sense to them,” she said. jnoblit@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekNews.com

HEALTHY APPROACH TO RETIREMENT Sixty-five is a big birthday for retirees and would be retirees. Individuals who are already collecting Social Security benefits will be contacted by the federal government a few months prior to their 65th birthdays about their Medicare eligibility. Those not receiving Social Security benefits can call the Social Security Administration three months before they turn 65 about signing up for Medicare. In any case, Medicare recipients will receive Parts A (hospital coverage) and B (doctor visits and outpatient care) automatically. However, they can reject Part B if they don’t want to pay a premium for it. Part D (drug coverage) is optional. Prospective Medicare recipients may also want to investigate a Medigap policy, which fills in the holes of Medicare coverage. As medical advances improve, people live longer and healthier lives. That means it is not unusual for someone to need income for health care and daily living expenses 20 or 30 years after he or she retires. What you do at key points along the journey to retirement will determine if your retirement years are full of opportunity or worry. I have more than 20 years of experience as a financial advisor helping individuals and couples successfully achieve and maintain their financial and retirement goals. Jerome to face Liberty in district final By AARON BLANKENSHIP ThisWeek Community Newspapers In a district semifinal on Feb. 27 at the Dispatch Ice Haus, the Dublin Jerome High School hockey team beat Cincinnati Moeller 1-0 in overtime when Blair Comfort worked his way to the top of the crease and tapped the puck past goal-

tender Jake Krugler after receiving it from Casey Worth from behind the net. Coach Pat Murphy described it as an “ugly goal” and he said his squad likely needs to keep scoring that way to continue to win in the district tournament. The top-seeded Celtics will face second-seeded Olentangy Liberty in the district final on Saturday, March 5 at the Ice

Haus. The winner will advance to the state tournament, which will be March 12-13 at Nationwide Arena. “That wasn’t a pretty goal by any means, but it won the game for us, so who cares?’” said Murphy, whose squad is 28-6-1. “That was a great game that went back and forth, and we needed something because we missed a bunch of good

scoring chances earlier. When you’re playing a team that’s evenly-matched with you, sometimes it’s those ugly goals that makes a difference. I don’t care how we score, as long as we find a way to score and win.” Jerome is 2-0 against Liberty this season, winning 4-2 on Dec. 10 and 3-2 on Feb. 4.

Liberty downed Coffman 3-0 on Feb. 27 to improve to 26-8-1, as forwards Jimmy Ruska, Marshall Oja and Christopher Bergamesca all scored goals and Eddie Arcy made17 saves. Anthony Bergamesca and Alec Vidrick are the Patriots’ top defensemen. See HOCKEY, page B2

Coffman’s Gill places sixth at state By FRANK DiRENNA ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Although she had hoped for a better finish, Dublin Coffman High School junior Nichole Gill led the Shamrocks at the Division I state swimming and diving meet that concluded Feb. 26 at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. Gill placed sixth in the 100yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 5.74 seconds, helping Coffman scored 22 points to finish 27th behind champion Upper Arlington (286), which won its seventh consecutive state championship. Gill turned in a personal-best effort of 1:04.61 during the preliminaries and was seeded third heading into the championship final. “Nichole had a pretty good Friday to position herself pretty well for Saturday night, but had an off night,” coach Steven VonSchriltz said. “She was disappointed, but those things happen.” “I hoped to be better, but I was happy with my time from preliminaries,” said Gill, a three-time state qualifier. “I’m really proud that I’ve been able to go to states every year so far, because it’s a great experience and I wish a lot of other swimmers could be there, too.” The 200 medley relay of Zoe Spornhauer, Monica Welcker, Gill and Katie Kaffenbarger placed 13th (1:51.35). The same four combined to finish 19th in the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.4), and Welcker, Kaffenbarger, Spornhauer and Steffi Zepp finished 24th in the 400 free relay

(3:46.35). The Shamrocks competed without freestyle specialist Cara Demyan, who missed the meet because of illness. “We lost our best freestyler, which hurt all three of our relays,” VonSchriltz said of Demyan. The boys team did not score at state, as Cincinnati St. Xavier won with 312 points. Tim O’Brien was 19th (1:59.76) in the 200 individual medley and Orion Martin finished 20th (48.54) in the 100 free. Ryan Murdock of the Dublin Coffman High School wrestling team has spent the week visualizing what he expects to accomplish at the Division I state tournament. In his mind, the recipe for a championship involves more than just strength, skill and determination. “You have to imagine where you want to be and the only thing I can think about is winning a state title,” he said. Murdock, a junior, is 42-2 at 112 pounds. He enters the state tournament, which runs Thursday, March 3, through Saturday, March 5, at Ohio State, as a district and sectional champion. He placed fifth at 103 last year at state. Junior Chris Mullucey (37-8, 103) and senior Matt Muncrief (31-9, 171) will join Murdock at state after the Shamrocks scored 74.5 points at the district tournament Feb. 25-26 at Hilliard Darby to tie Centerville for sixth behind champion Olentangy Liberty (128.5) as 44 teams scored. It was Coffman’s best district finish since 2005. “We couldn’t have wrestled any better,” coach Bob Stoll said. “We also qualified for the state duals next year and we haven’t done that since 2001. That was one of our goals this season.” Murdock defeated Miamisburg’s Jordan Branham 10-0 in the final. Mullucey, a district qualifier last season, and Muncrief both placed fourth and will be making their first state appearance. Mullucey lost 5-0 to Marysville’s David Sparks in the third-place match, and Muncrief was pinned by Teays Valley’s Brocky Leidecker in 1 minute, 41 seconds. The top four in each weight class advanced. “Muncrief’s on a roll right now,” Stoll said. “He had a district champion to face and lost his second match, but he won a couple of onepoint matches. When you get this far, you’re pretty equal. The guys who win those one-point matches are going to move on.” Also competing at district were T.J. Armengau (160), Jake Cline (135), Anthony Goliver (152), Tyler McCourt (145), Joe Schulze (125) and Ryan Steiner (189). •Jerome’s three-time district qualifier Casey Nicholson (35-6, 130) reached state for the first time See WRESTLING, page B2

Jerome girls are optimistic about future

Coffman girls fall to Vikings in semifinal

By SCOTT HENNEN

The season didn’t end the way coach Matt Martin and his Dublin Jerome High School girls basketball team might have liked, but the Celtics believe they have a bright future. Jerome lost to Hilliard Davidson 40-30 in the second round of the Division I district tournament on Feb. 25. The Celtics played much of the game with senior Brooke Carrel on the court with junior Lindsay Rieland and three sophomores. “We have a lot of youth, but we also have a lot of experience in those young players,” said Martin, whose team finished 129 overall. “The program seems to definitely be headed in the right direction.” Carrel, a 5-foot-8 guard, led the Celtics with 12 points and two 3-pointers against Davidson, and 5-10 sophomore guard/forward Katherine McCoy added seven points. In the opening round Feb. 19 at Olentangy, the Celtics defeated New Albany 40-33 as sophomore point guard Kaitlyn Miller (5-10) scored eight of her 11 points in the fourth quarter. Carrel also scored 11 points with three 3-pointers and Jerome got six points apiece from 5-10 sophomore post player Sarah Auker and Rieland, a 6-2 post player. McCoy had five points. The Celtics had all five starters average more than six points per game, with Miller leading the way at 9.7 points. Carrel was next at 7.5 points, followed by Auker at 6.6 points with 6.7 rebounds per game, McCoy at 6.2 points and Rieland with 6.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per contest. “We may not have scored as much as we would have liked (37.8 per game), but we never gave up 50 points,” said Martin, who completed his fourth season as coach. “The most we gave

In the final OCC-Cardinal Division standings, Olentangy won the title at 12-2 followed by Dublin Scioto (10-4) and Westerville North (9-5). Jerome and Westerville Central tied for fourth at 7-7 followed by Westerville South (5-9) and both Olentangy Liberty and Marysville (3-11). Carrel and forward Katie Vaughn (5-9) were the team’s lone seniors. “You’re not going to find a more mature couple of seniors than we had,” Martin said. “They had great leadership and they made sure there was no drama this year. This team really got along great.” Also expected to return are juniors Allison Kessler (5-5, guard/forward) and Emily Moss (5-7, guard/forward) as well as sophomore Kaitlyn Beebe (5-5, guard/forward). •The boys team finished 7-14 with a 58-48 loss to Delaware in the opening round of the Division I district tournament on Feb. 23 at Jonathan Alder. The senior lost his first match but then won his next four before losing to Olentangy Liberty’s Jake Ryan 4-2 in the third-place match. The Celtics had a programrecord seven district qualifiers. Four won at least one match. “When you lose that first match like Casey did, you have to prepare yourself for the worst,” coach Adam Huddle said. “Casey didn’t dwell on it and we had some great showings from the other guys.” Brad Myers, who won a sec-

tional title at 171, went 2-2. Senior Juven Lopez (145) and sophomore Brent Mowery (171) also each won two matches to help Jerome finish 22nd (28). Also competing at district were Jack Austin (140), Bennett Comfort (112) and Kyle Harness (152). •Of Scioto’s five district qualifiers, only two won a match, including junior Wesley King (3711, 215), who placed fourth to qualify for state. King, who lost to Springboro’s Ryan Jackson 6-4 in the thirdplace match, will face returning state champion Nick Travanello (44-1), a junior from Wadsworth

who placed third in 2009, in the first round at state. “Most of Wes’ matches were close and he likes doing that,” said coach Scott King, whose team finished 27th (20). “He’s more of a turner than a point scorer. Both of his losses went down to the wire and he had a tough loss (4-2 in a semifinal) to district champion Ryan Sanders (of St. Charles), but gave him his closest match of the tournament.” Sophomore Anthony Trocchio (18-17, 130) went 2-2 district. Also competing were Yoshi Akutsu (heavyweight), Ian Richeson (119) and Gabe Shirkey (171).

Dublin Coffman High School girls basketball coach Bryan Patton knew his team could afford few lapses in its Division I district semifinal matchup against second-seeded Northland on Feb. 28 at Olentangy Liberty. As it turned out, one ended up being too many. Northland, ninth in the final state poll, turned a sequence of multiple turnovers and rushed shots by the Shamrocks into a spurt late in the third quarter and early in the fourth that gave the Vikings control. Northland won 58-46 to reach a district final on Saturday, March 5, at Liberty. Coffman finished 16-7. “We tried to sub in a few players late in the third and we lost some of our momentum,” Patton said. “And they are the type of team that if you give them an inch, they will take a mile. We had a few turnovers and they jumped on us.” Coffman trailed 32-29 at halftime, but came out strong in the third quarter and took the lead on two occasions. The Shamrocks were down 41-40 in the quarter when Quynh Vo had the ball stolen from her and Northland’s Symone Denham went in for a layup and was fouled by Samantha Edwards with 31 seconds to play in the period. Denham connected on the free throw and then scored again on a fast-break layup with 15 seconds left after Coffman a missed shot in the lane. The basket gave the Vikings a 46-40 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. The Shamrocks opened the fourth with another turnover that Northland converted into a layup. After Meredith Stranges answered for Coffman, Denham converted a three-point play, giving the Vikings a 51-42 advantage with 6:46 left. The Shamrocks would not closer than eight points the rest of the game.

“(Northland) came out and turned up their level of intensity and focus,” Patton said. “At the latter point of the third, you could tell they had a sense of urgency.” Coffman was led by Stacy Axner, who scored 14 points. Stranges had 12 points and McKenzie Bailey had 11 points and seven rebounds. Seeded 11th, the Shamrocks, who were trying to reach their third district final in program history, opened the postseason with a 51-36 victory over Lancaster on Feb. 16. They then beat Westerville North 65-49 in the second round on Feb. 23 at Westerville Central to reach the matchup with Northland. Coffman, which had beaten North 51-46 on Jan. 8, led throughout the rematch and pulled away in the fourth quarter as Sarah McQuade made seven of eight free throws in the period. McQuade had 16 points and seven assists. Bailey had 23 points and six rebounds, and Stranges had 17 points and eight rebounds. “It was one of our better performances of the year,” Patton said. “We wanted to play well and it was really good. A lot of girls made plays for us.” •The boys team plays sixthseeded Walnut Ridge in a Division I district semifinal at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at the Fairgrounds Coliseum. The winner advances to a district final, where it will play fourth-seeded Gahanna or ninth-seeded Westerville North at 4 p.m. March 12 at the Fairgrounds. Coffman, which won a district title a year ago, has reached a district final eight of the past 10 seasons. The Shamrocks have won four titles during that span. Seeded seventh, Coffman is quite familiar with Walnut Ridge. The teams played Jan. 22, with the Scots winning 51-48 in overtime. The Shamrocks, who are 18-3, haven’t lost since and enter

“Olentangy Liberty has good goaltending and they’re as aggressive as any team we’ve played,” Murphy said. “This game will be competitive, hard-hitting and fast. We need to stick to our game plan and style. We’re going to focus on playing good team defense first and we’ll try to score when we get the opportunity.” Murphy will utilize four forward lines in an attempt to wear down the Patriots. Playing on Jerome’s top forward line are Comfort (12 goals, 27 assists), Matt Burke (17 goals, 13 assists) and James Eastep (36 goals, 14 assists), while Chase Compton (25 goals, 11 assists), Jake Howell (12 goals, 25 assists) and Joe Davison (15 goals, 13 assists) power its second line. Competing on the third line are Alex Cathis (17 goals, 17 assists), John Henry Fischer (17 goals, 15 assists) and Worth (11 goals, 15 assists). Jeff Davison (10 goals, five assists), Tommy Parizek (13 goals, five assists) and Nick Simonetti (five goals, 11 assists) anchor the fourth line. Wes Faulkenberry and Josh Howell are Jerome’s top goaltenders. Josh Howell had 30 saves against Moeller. “We get teams into situations

in the playoffs, depending on the situations that we need them in.” •Coffman entered last weekend shorthanded after forwards Nick Kreber and Kevin Putnam and defenseman Gunner Gruehl were suspended for the remainder of the season for violating a school policy. Putnam was Coffman's leading scorer with 43 goals and 48 assists. Kreber was the team’s topscoring second-line forward with 13 goals and eight assists. Gruehl was one of the Shamrocks’highest-scoring defensemen with six goals and seven assists. Third-seeded Coffman beat St. Charles 3-1 in the second round of the district tournament on Feb. 26, as Sam O’Brien scored twice, Chris DiBiase scored once and Nathan Schuman had 21 saves. But the Shamrocks put only 17 shots on goals en route to the loss to Liberty on Feb. 27. “I’m really proud of my seniors because they all played really hard and did what they could to win these games,” Pooley said. “We just didn’t have enough offense against Liberty. This leaves a bad taste in my mouth because we were just hitting our stride and I know we had more in us.”

“I’m really proud of the seniors with the way they handled the situation,” coach Dave Hale said. “I came in as a new coach and they were able to listen to us as a coaching staff and learn a completely new system. They all bought into it and did what they needed to do to help the team. The seniors really raised the bar from where we will start next season.” Aside from Neale and Cam Wilson, both three-year starters, also expected to return are junior James Warvel (6-6, forward) and sophomores Luke Potter (64, forward; 3.9 ppg) and Donavon Wilson (6-2, guard; 3.7 ppg). “We should have a good group of young kids back next year,” Hale said. “They will need to push themselves over the offseason to become better players.”

Patience paves way to success for Irish girls By SCOTT GERFEN ThisWeek Community Newspapers As a first-year coach in charge of a young team, Dublin Scioto High School girls basketball coach Matt Fisher didn’t know what to think when he heard predictions the Irish would finish near the bottom of the OCCCardinal Division. Scioto opened the season with just two players with any varsity experience. “I would like to think that we raised the bar this season,” Fisher said. “The girls could’ve just done what they did last year, but they bought into what we kept telling them and it worked.” The Irish had won six in a row before losing to 10th-seeded Logan 5239 in the second round of the Division I district tournament Feb. 24. Scioto, which had beaten Dresden Tri-Valley 57-45 in the first round of the tournament, finished 15-7 overall. Led by a group of five seniors last season, the Irish went 15-6. Scioto was the runner-up in the OCCCardinal, going 10-4 to finish behind Olentangy (12-2) and ahead of Westerville North (9-5), Dublin Jerome (77), Westerville Central (7-7), Westerville South (5-9), Marysville (3-11) and Olentangy Liberty (3-11). The Irish’s league losses came against Olentangy (64-39 on Dec. 7 and 54-32 on Jan. 21) and South (36-31 on Dec. 10 and 46-33 on Jan. 25). Scioto won with defense, as it held its opponents to an average of 43 points per game. In five of its losses, its opponent scored more than 50 points. The Irish averaged 42 points per

The team’s lone senior, guard Kelly Flood, averaged nearly 10 points and shot 37 percent from 3-point range. She was second-team all-league. Emily Jones, a 6-foot junior forward, was first-team all-league. Jones, junior Sarah Leach (5-6 point guard) and sophomores Anna Buhigas (5-7 guard) and Katie Kollins (5-10 forward) should supply the Irish with plenty of experience next season. “We’ve got a bunch of younger kids who pushed some of the varsity players this season, so we should have plenty of competition,” Fisher said. “We’re not going to talk about expectations, but we’re very prepared for what we want to do this summer.” •Without an inside presence, the boys team struggled through a challenging OCC-Cardinal schedule. Scioto lost 48-39 to Teays Valley in the first round of the Division I district tournament Feb. 23 to finish 8-13 overall. Only twice did the Irish put together back-to-back victories, but coach Tony Bisutti did see improvement from last season, when his team finished 516. “We were in most of our games and they involved a lot of close games,” he said. “But we just couldn’t turn the corner in some of those games. If there was a disappointment, it was that.” Scioto tied Jerome and Marysville By Eric George/ThisWeek for fourth in the league at 4-7, behind Scioto’s Jalen Johnson tries to grab a rebound Feb. 23 during a 48-39 loss to South (12-0), Liberty (9-1), North (8Teays Valley in a Division I district tournament game. 2) and Central (8-2), and ahead of Olengame and scored a season high in their ficult team to prepare for because we tangy (3-7). Ewing scored 19 against Teays Valley, but the Irish couldn’t slow Nick Anderson, who had 31 points. “We didn’t get off to a very good start and whenever that happened, it wasn’t good for us,” Bisutti said. “We didn’t get much production from anyone else.” Scioto featured an improved defense with opponents shooting 42.7 percent from the field, compared to about 48 percent last season. As Bisutti looks to next season, sophomore guards Antonio Bisutti (6-0) and Josh Ashwill (5-11) will have more experience as two-year starters. Members of the DeSales High School gymnastics team were devastated when they learned that senior classmate and former teammate Milena DiMichaelangelo died unexpectedly Feb. 18 at age 17. DiMichaelangelo competed for the Stallions as a freshman and sophomore and had remained friends with many of her former teammates. DeSales was sluggish and unfocused in practice after attending DiMichaelangelo’s funeral on Feb. 22, and coach Misty Lloyd-Matthews wasn’t sure how effective her squad would be when it competed in the district meet Feb. 26 at Worthington Kilbourne. Therefore, Lloyd-Matthews was thrilled to see her team score a season-best 136.85 points to win its second consecutive district title and eighth championship in 10 years. Thomas Worthington (134.525) placed second, with Kilbourne (134.25), Dublin Coffman (133.35) and Dresden Tri-Valley (132.5) rounding out the top five. “This was an emotional week for us and it was hard to get the girls motivated and focused in practice because they were such close friends with Milena,” LloydMatthews said. “I wasn’t sure how we’d do because we had a bad week of practice, but I think the girls wanted to do well in honor of Milena and they came here and had one of our best overall days of competition. All of them did amazing at district.” DeSales was led by sophomore Kate Miltko and junior Katie Vance. Miltko won vault with a 9.175, finished second in the all-

Junior Erica Rodriguez led the Wolves by winning floor with a 9.225 and placing seventh in the all-around (34.425). “I’m happy and a little surprised we finished this high, because we started off rough with a lot of falls on beam,” Fushimi said. “But we regrouped and came back strong in our other three events, especially on floor where we had some of our best scores of the season.” The Wolves finished ninth (132.625) at state last season. “We’re going to do a lot of work on beam to prepare for state, and maybe we can try to finish higher than ninth there this year,” Fushimi said. Hilliard Darby senior Meghan Parsley finished first in the allaround (35.55), second on both vault (9.1) and floor (9.125), fourth on beam (8.725) and fifth on bars (8.6). “I’ve never won an event at district before, so I’m ecstatic to win all-around,” Parsley said. “I definitely want to make the podium in something at state, but I’m just going to go and have fun and do my best there.”

COFFMAN Continued from page B2 the rematch having won 10 in a row, marking their sixth doubledigit winning streak in program history. Walnut Ridge, which is 17-4, won the City League-South Division before falling to Northland in the City League championship 59-52 on Feb. 19. Among the Scots’ strengths are their size and athleticism. They are led by 6-foot-4 Austin Traylor, who averages 17.4 points and 9.3 rebounds and has signed to play football at the University of Wisconsin.

Joining him down low is 6-10 Dwayne Bazemore, who averages 10.7 rebounds. Traylor had 21 points and Bazemore scored 14 in the first meeting. “(Walnut Ridge) is a really good team,” coach Jamey Collins said. “They do a lot of good things. They’re a very formidable opponent. I like how our guys are playing, too. I like how they’re trying to do the right things right now. It’s going to make for a good game.” “We will prepare better for this game,” 6-6 forward Adam Hall said. “We know what we have to do now. They’re a good team, and

it’s always fun to play against guys like that.” Coffman advanced to a district semifinal by beating Logan 7353 in the first round Feb. 22 at Hilliard Bradley and defeating Whetstone 65-41 in the second Feb. 25 at Hamilton Township. SWIM Continued from page B1 The 200 medley relay of Martin, O’Brien, Srikanth Gowda and Daniel Flower was 17th (1:39.25). The season featured several highlights, according to VonSchriltz. The girls team finished third (188) in the OCC-Central Division meet that concluded Jan. 29 behind champion UA (433), fourth (143) at the UA sectional that concluded Feb. 12 behind first-place UA (416) and fifth (165) at district that concluded Feb. 19 at Ohio State behind firstplace UA (505). The boys team was third (186) at the OCC-Central meet behind first-place UA (388.5), third (128) at the UA sectional behind the host Golden Bears (414) and fifth (140) at district behind UA (432). VonSchriltz will look to replace nine seniors, including state competitors Gowda and O’Brien. “It was a good group,” VonSchriltz said. “Most of them were around for four years, which isn’t always easy to do.” •Jerome was led by four underclassmen at state. For the boys team, junior Jake Moore was 15th (21.85) in the 50 free and 18th (48.2) in the 100 free, and junior Jacob Kasper was 15th (384.15 points) in diving after finishing 17th (248.5) last year. For the girls team, freshman Morgan Quesnel was 12th (57.95) in the 100 fly and 23rd (54.55) in the 100 free, and freshman Maggie Heller finished 16th in diving (375.95). “It was a great time,” coach Tyler Prose said of the state meet. “I thought overall it was just a great experience for the kids and the team because a lot of our swimmers came up to watch them and cheer on our kids.” The boys team finished fifth (173) at the OCC-Cardinal meet behind champion Olentangy Liberty (233), sixth (113) at the Worthington sectional behind firstplace New Albany (238), eighth (122) at district behind UA and tied with Xenia for 42nd (4) at state behind St. Xavier. tral (274), fifth (136) at sectional behind first-place Thomas Worthington (194), tied for ninth with Delaware (100) at district behind UA and tied with four teams for 43rd (6) at state. •Alhough it lacked depth, Scioto received several solid efforts this season, according to coach Joe Cahill. Sophomore Liz Harty led the team and was the program’s lone state qualifier. Battling illness for much of the postseason, she finished 11th (57.91) in the 100 fly at state after placing fifth in the 100 free (52.53) and eighth in the 100 fly (57.45) last year. Behind Harty’s performance, the girls team tied Jerome for 43rd at state. The Irish were eighth (66) at the OCC-Cardinal meet, 10th (60) at the Worthing-

ton sectional and 17th (25) at district. The boys team was third (182) at the OCC-Cardinal meet, fifth (114) at sectional and 13th (64) at district. The Irish will lose seniors Sean Earley and diver Adam Van Heyde from the boys team. There are no seniors on the girls team. “I’m happy with the way things went,” Cahill said. “We have some things to improve upon, but overall I was really impressed considering with how small of a team we had that we were able to do such great things. I’m really proud of them. They worked pretty hard and, overall, they were pretty successful.” fdirenna@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com

Pickerington pizza shop is a real heavyweight champ The reputation of Catalfino’s pizza precedes it. For over a decade, Catalfino’s took first or second place in the Slice of Columbus competition. It scored several consecutive second places in the North American Pizza and Ice Cream Show. And Catalfino’s landed in the top 10 of the American Pizza Championship. Catalfino’s business also has a storied past going back to the mid1970s. That was when the family that still owns and operates Catalfino’s co-opened their first one-oven, two-table shop on the East Side of Columbus. Decades of success, change, expansions and relocations eventually brought Catalfino’s to its newest spot in Pickerington a couple of years ago. This latest incarnation is a big and bright, nice but casual restau-

MENU by G.A. Benton rant with a decidedly sporty attitude. There’s lots of Buckeye stuff on the walls, plus tons of TVs beaming in games and races (it’s the kind of place where a NASCAR dad gets decked out in full stock-car regalia). Largely full of happy families, Catalfino’s also has a fully stocked bar detailed with a crazy parade of flattened beer caps. A crazy parade of “Man vs. Food”-type munchies can adorn Catalfino’s pizzas, salads, sandwiches and starters if you so desire. I so desired. That’s why I picked the funky Fagiolo Fries appetizer ($6). It was a big pile of “krinkle” cutters

doused in a nice, black-peppery homemade pasta and bean soup topped with melted provolone. Yeah, it sounds odd, but really it’s not far from chili cheese fries.

Think of it as Italian-American poutine, if you want, but do think of it. Also think of the Chicago Combo ($9), which the menu says is fully endorsed by The Fan’s Mike Ricordati. Here, a decent Italian beef sandwich increased its girth by the addition of a spicy sausage patty. Was it an authentic Windy City dish? Not really. Did it’s blend of “jus” (I would have liked more), griddled roast beef, spicy sausage and giardiniera (hot pickled veggies) prove Ricordati knew what he was talking about (at least in this case)? You betcha. Of course Catalfino’s top-notch pizzas are the stars. You can design your own, go with a traditional combo or pick one of the shop’s over-the-top specialties ($8.50 to $22). If you’re considering the latter, here are some un-

I’m generally not a fan of barbecue on pizza, but Catalfino’s Carolina pulled pork was a winner. I liked how its homemade

thick, tangy and smoky barbecue sauce complemented both the good meat and — wait for it — onion rings! Also terrific was the wellnamed Champion (ricotta, bacon, sausage, ham, pepperoni and much more). Catalfino’s menu says this pie’s won more than 20 awards in competitions, and I could see — and taste! — why. The menu also says The Fan’s Scott Torgerson declared the Spicy Italian “will be his final meal if he’s ever on Death Row.” After demolishing that irresistible grease bomb (killer spicy marinara plus double meats and cheeses), Death Row seemed almost redundant. Warma for the shawarma: Spit-roasted meats gaining popularity Behold the vertical rotisserie, a magnificent machine that is being used by a growing number of ethnic restaurants in Columbus. Spit-roasted options are the signature dishes at such newcomers as Lavash, Pita Hut, Los Guachos and Lashish, the Greek. The electric broiler rotates a composite of meat in front of bright-orange heating lamps, which melt away fat and leave the outside golden brown and glistening with moisture. The outer shell is then sliced off per order, and often placed in a pita or is part of a larger plate ensemble. Most everyone is at least familiar with the gyro,

brown cuts of herb-flecked meat cut from the large, twirling cylinder, and garnished with shredded lettuce, onions, tomatoes and tzatziki inside a soft pita. While not new, a different brand of twirling, carnivorous delight is tempting local diners: the shawarma. Several restaurants offer their own variations. Pita Hut in Clintonville has a Jerusalem-style, using alternating layers of dark-meat turkey and lamb. Owner Lutfi Ayoub said the seasoning is key to the alluring, complex flavor. He uses a blend of

The place offers nine condiments, from hummus to cucumbers, for added flavor. “That’s the important part, always,” he said. The sauce also is a big part of the equation, says Nasir Latif, owner of Lavash, also in Clintonville. Recipe of the week He offers a simple but bold garlic sauce for his two shawarma options: a Lebanese-style using lamb and beef and a chicken selection. Latif said big beehive-shaped columns of meat pirouetting behind the counter help draw in customers. “It looks good,” he said. “It tastes good.” Shish Kebab Mediterranean Café and Café Istanbul use the rotisserie to make doner, the Turkish equivalent of gyro. Ilyas Batuk, chef and partner of Shish Kebab on Bethel Road, said the secret to excellent doner is using a good fat ratio – 25 percent – and forcefully compressing the ground beef and lamb mixture on the spit, which gives it a fine texture. “If you don’t have the fat, it’s no good,” he said. Customers seem to agree, as the doner is one of the top sellers in the restaurant. He makes 80 pounds each Friday and Saturday and another 50 pounds on Sunday, with smaller amounts during the rest of the week. Mike Polster, a partner of the Louis R. Polster Co., a restaurant-equipment supplier in the Brewery District, said he believes the sales of the vertical broilers will continue to increase. “As the ethnic population increases, these restau- Orange butter cake with Grand Marnier, courtesy of Richard Blondin of the Refectory. rants will remain popular,” he said.

Scioto students earn math contest marks Dublin Scioto High School placed 17th nationally in the 2011 Four-by-Four Competition, a national mathematics contest ad-

ministered by National Assessment & Testing. Coach Terry Henderly prepared students for this contest, in which teams of four participated in ten three-minute rounds, attempting to answer four questions. This effectively gives each student three minutes to answer one problem, but the team must also decide who will work each problem and whether their time would be better spent checking one another’s work on easier and more familiar problems or if they should attempt to answer all four questions. After results from schools across the country were double-

checked, the team of Arjun Venkataraman, Samuel Ming, Hinesh Amin and Hyun-Yul Cho had the highest score at Dublin Scioto, helping their school to place 17 overall among the top schools in the country. Dublin Scioto High School will participate in National Assessment & Testing’s next contest, the 2011 Collaborative Problem-Solving Contest, from April 13-20. This contest allows a team to collaborate for one week on 15 problems, and rewards problem-solving skills such as brainstorming, collaboration, research, and the application of technology.
