The Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce leverages efforts to market and assist in the retention and expansion of businesses while strengthening the economic vitality & enhancing the quality of life. The past year has been an exciting year for our community: making big strides in economic development, while bridging the gap between the city, the UACIC and the chamber in efforts to improve the quality of life in Upper Arlington. As the needs of businesses and our community have changed, the chamber has created a new model to meet those needs. In addition to providing members a chance to affect the direction of the chamber through committee work, members are also affecting the direction and future of Upper Arlington. We want to thank the city of Upper Arlington and the Upper Arlington Community Improvement Corporation (UACIC) for granting funding that will enable us to fully leverage our ongoing work for the benefit of businesses, the community, the UACIC and its strategic partner the city, to accomplish our shared mission. The chamber invested resources in 2010 for Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and marketing and programming efforts to support the ShopUA! brand and the business community. As a result of that effort and the chamber’s dynamic programming, the chamber’s website ranks among the top three Google searches in comparison scores and has surpassed all other suburban chambers in central Ohio. We believe capitalizing on redevelopment opportunities helps keep the city both vibrant and financially sound. A thriving business climate improves our city’s ability to serve all of us — residents and businesses alike to better meet the challenges facing UA and serve our constituents. The chamber’s focus will be: Develop and maintain a knowledge base • Build a more comprehensive data base and continually update and create a broad base of knowledge about the companies within the Upper Arlington area. • Connect companies and business support pro-

grams to stimulate and/or accelerate the growth of companies in the community (Chamber Business Advisory Program). • Utilize the website to help identify mid- and small- companies needing assistance. Provide support and/or integrate community resources: • Create a network hub with online presence to develop, facilitate, and partner connection opportunities for area business executives to create clusters with like minded interests and needs. • Increase awareness of the importance of the community’s existing business base • Increase the visibility through an on-going marketing campaign and on-line presence for branding the community and events to highlight the community. • Showcase and market our area retail and service businesses through programs in partnership with the city (such as Shop UA!) with an expanded online presence. Public Policy •Advocate for area business and act as a conduit presenting a unified voice to monitor and engage in local, state, and regional legislative and public policy issues which will affect the economic well-being of the Upper Arlington area business community and community at large. Upper Arlington Incubator Support the cooperative effort among UACIC, UAACC and the city to establish an incubator. We have the leadership and the tools. Through collaboration and purposeful decision making, along with a long term perspective, we will continue to work together to enhance the quality of life for all residents and help grow and retain business locally and in our region. It’s all about partnerships and collaboration. Thank you from the Chamber Board of Trustees, Don Leach, chairman, and Becky Hajost, president

Teen tech award winner works to connect research, commerce By GARY BUDZAK ThisWeek Community Newspapers
An Upper Arlington High School senior was one of the winners at the TechColumbus annual Innovation Awards, held Feb. 3 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Ameya Deshmukh was one of two winners of a $2,500 High School Innovation Award/Scholarship. The other was Kevin Wolf of New Albany High School. They were selected by independent judges. “The Innovation Awards has become the premier event for the central Ohio tech community, showcasing the best and brightest individuals, companies and technology teams for their contributions and achievements in innovation,” said Ted Ford, president and CEO of TechColumbus, in a statement. TechColumbus is a nonprofit organization that focuses on technology-based economic development in the 15 counties of central Ohio. Deshmukh said that to win the award, he wrote an essay “regarding how innovation fits into your life and how you see yourself using innovation in your future.”

He’s not sure if he’ll attend Ohio State, but Deshmukh said he’ll probably pursue a dual major in the biological sciences and chemistry. He’d like to go into biomedical engineering and commercialize his research. “That’s kind of the premise of the Innovation Awards,” Deshmukh said. “They are basically looking for people who have done research and are able to apply that and make those products and services available to the common man.” For more information, visit www.techcolumbus.org.

Member perspective — Varga Communications From television commercials to annual corporate meetings, Varga Communications has been creating memorable messages for its clients for 26 years.Varga Communications is the independent video production house behind the Upper Arlington Quality of Life video. “We’re very proud of the work we’ve done for UA”, says president and chief videographer, Lou Varga. The UA video project brought together seven diverse community partners to tell the unique story of our thriving city. Led by the UAACC, the partners included the city of UA, the CIC, city schools, library, community foundation and the Northwest Board of Realtors. “It was important to the success of the project to have all the key entities around the table and on the same page,” said Varga. “It was obvious that UA is a world-class res-
idential community on the move.” The video also took on a global edge when native son Jack Nicklaus agreed to be interviewed for the piece. The 12-minute video is on the Chamber website and is used to promote awareness of the community as an ideal place to both live and work in central Ohio. Varga Communications has also helped the UA Chamber produce its annual meeting for the past three years, showcasing the benefits of chamber membership. In addition, clients have sent the Varga crew from New York to California to
capture video for various projects. The assignments range from producing corporate profiles for websites to developing training modules for workforce education. “We’ve been fortunate over the years to have been recognized nationally several times for our production values,” said Varga. The UA chamber member has also produced documentaries, one of which has aired on WOSU TV and other PBS affiliates. Information about Varga Communications is available on its website, vargacommunications.com.
Member focus – Haladon Technologies How long could your company last without your network? Growing up I remember when we would have issues with anything from our refrigerator to a broken furnace my Dad’s answer was that he would have his “guy” come look at it. His “guy” knew just enough to get things up and working again. It could sometimes take a while and when he did arrive he would spend a good deal of time trying figuring out what was wrong. The process would take twice as long and easily cost double or triple what it would have been if there was a service program in place using certified technicians. Now take a moment and think about how you currently support your IT infrastructure. Sound familiar? What would you do if your network failed and you couldn’t bring it back up — or worse, you lost all your client and company information along with it? Are you prepared for such an event? How long could you keep your business running if this happened to you? The UA Chamber recently discovered this when their network began having issues. Haladon Tech-
nologies had been speaking with them about moving to a managed program where their network could be proactively monitored and many issues resolved remotely, often before the chamber was even aware. When they do need support, the program includes unlimited help desk support and, when required, on-site technical support. Haladon Technologies technicians arrive well informed and are able to resolve issue in a fraction of the time it would take a traditional service to accomplish the task. The program is designed to help the Chamber avoid service disruptions altogether. Haladon Technologies is excited to be a participant in the chamber’s business advisory program and as a new member has already taken advantage of the available discount programs for employee health care and workers compensation coverage. Haladon Technologies has started discussions with the chamber about offering managed services at preferred rates to chamber members. Chamber spotlight Edie Rader Blough VP/ Branch Manager Title First Agency, Inc. 4740 Reed Road Columbus, Ohio 43220 614-442-1900 UpperArlington@TitleFirst.com 1) Where are you from? I grew up in Upper Arlington, and graduated from UAHS and Ohio State University. 2) What was the last movie you saw? “Inception” – definitely thumbs up! Really kept you guessing – genius. 3) Favorite toy as a child? I loved the Etcha-Sketch and anything you could use to “create,” like spiro-graph. That dates me. 4) Who inspires you? My daughter, Meredith, inspires me. She is an inner-city missionary in Chicago working through an organization called “ Mission Year.” Her devotion to the kids and their futures there is amazing. Their motto of “Love God, Love People – nothing else matters” is a daily inspiration to me. 5) What did you want to be when you grew Edie Rader Blough up? Growing up I wanted to be a ballerina or a wedding planner … it could still happen… just almost 34 years now, and really DO love what saying! Seriously, I have been with Title First I do. I love working with people.
