Portrait recognizes Cincione’s long service By ALAN FROMAN ThisWeek Staff Writer The Grandview Heights Public Library recently honored library board of trustees president Al Cincione with the unveiling of a portrait. The portrait of Cincione was painted by former Grandview resident and library staff member Peggy Eagle. The painting is temporarily on display by the elevator on the library’s second floor. It will be moved later to its permanent location in the quiet reading room. Cincione has served on the library board for 40 years and as the board’s president since 1990. “It’s a very nice tribute and a great honor,” he said. “I appreciate it very much.” It was particularly meaningful to have Eagle paint his portrait, Cincione said, because he and her husband were boyhood friends. “I grew up in Grandview and I’m sure I must have spent a lot of time at the library as a kid,” he said. “I know what an important role in this community the library plays. It’s a pleasure to be able See CINCIONE, page A3

It tells the story of Mary, an orphan girl who comes to live at the home of her uncle and cousin where she discovers a magical secret walled garden. “It’s a departure from the kind of shows we’ve been doing in recent years,” vocal music director Andrew Grega said. “If you’re looking for the big exciting choreographed dance numbers, you won’t find it here. ‘The Secret Garden’ has some seri-

Sixteen presenters who work in a variety of fields — some directly related to science, others not — participated in the event. “We wanted to help students see the practical uses of science, that it’s not just something you learn in the classroom or use to answer questions on a test,” said sixth-grade science teacher Vicki Dunlevy. Dunlevy coordinated the career day program with fifth-grade science teacher Jill Walker. The professionals who participated in the program included everyone from a chemist and emer-

Edison students participate in science day Continued from page A1 gency room physician to a chef and toy manufacturer. “We wanted the students to see that everyone uses science, even a chef or someone who makes toys,” Dunlevy said. “We tried to have all fields of science represented.” One of the goals of the career day was to help encourage students to remain interested in science as they progress through school, she said. The event was modeled after the All Arts Day held each year

in the district. As with that program, students went from room to room to hear a number of presentations during the half-day science career day. The idea for the career day stemmed from the science club that Dunlevy and Walker started this school year. The club, which meets twice a month, provides students a chance to take part in a variety of sciencerelated activities. “It’s a popular activity. We do a lot of fun things,” Dunlevy said. “Most recently, the activity was building a rollercoaster.”

But since the club is limited to only 30 participants this year, “we wanted to do something that could include more students,” she said. Dunlevy said she and Walker would like to expand the science club next year and may try to make the science career day an all-day event. Many of the presenters were Grandview parents, including civil engineer Mike Rowland, who has a child who attends Edison. “I think this kind of program is a great idea,” Rowland said. “Anything that helps expose kids to science is a good thing.”

He said he wanted to try to give the students a better idea of what a civil engineer does. “I explained that it’s not a job where you just sit in an office, that there’s a lot of work out in the field,” Rowland said. The students had a lot of good questions to ask him about civil engineering, he said. “I was really impressed with the students and their level of interest,” Rowland said. “I make a lot of presentations as part of my job, but I don’t get the chance to talk to students that much. I really enjoyed it.”

The rest goes to us for our sale.” Visitors at the book sale will find the books organized by subject to make browsing easier, Freudenriech said. “A lot of people tell us our sale is the best organized one around,” he said. “We pride ourselves on that. We want to make it easy for people to find what they’re looking for.”

The Friends uses the money it raises to support library programs and expenses that aren’t covered in the library budget, Freudenriech said. “Our support is even more needed after the cuts that have been made in state funding for libraries,” he said. “The state budget situation continues to look dire.” The organization provides funding to help with such popular library programs as the Music on the Lawn concert series and the summer reading club, Freudenriech said.

“Many years ago, we paid for the library’s first computer, back when computers cost quite a lot of money,” he said. “They don’t cost that much now.” In addition to its book sales, which are held each spring and fall and at the Lazy Daze festival, the Friends also offers books and audio-visual materials for sale in its bargain book shelves in the library’s study commons. “We offer them for sale on the honor system,” Freudenriech said. “It brings in a lot of additional revenue for us.”

Cincione honored for four decades APPROVAL to serve on the board. I really enjoy it.” Cincione said he believes there are three pillars to a great community — good municipal government, a high-quality school district and an excellent library. “In this community, we’re blessed to have all three,” he said. It’s not unusual for library board members to serve for many years, Cincione said. “The appointment process is through the school board and there are no term limits,” he said. “You can serve as long as you want. I think we all enjoy serving on the board. We have a good working relationship on the board.” When he was asked in 1971 if he would like to serve on the board, he was happy to say yes, Cincione said. “It was a way to make a contribution to my community through the library,” he said. “I was always impressed with our library” and that has not changed over the past four decades. “We’ve been lucky to have wonderful library directors during my time on the board,” Cin-

GHHS to stage musical Moms are for a lifetime. version of ‘Secret Garden’ Continued from page A1 Wiz,’ but when we saw the skills and talent they were bringing to the auditions, (Grega and I) turned to each other and said, maybe this is the year” to do “The Secret Garden.” “I’ve been wanting to do “The Secret Garden” for a some time,” Grega said. “But the music is so demanding, we had to wait for the right group of students.” Thanks to a $2,000 grant from the Grandview Heights/Marble Cliff Education Foundation, the student orchestra will be augmented with a five-piece string section, he said.

“The music is so beautiful and complex, it really demands a full string section and not just a keyboard simulating the sound of strings,” Grega said. “It’s going to be a great experience for the students to perform with a full string section.” The chance to do a more challenging show — both in music and plot — is both rewarding and fun, said Allison Zawisa, who portrays Alice, a friend of Mary’s deceased mother. “It’s a lot different from, say, ‘Beauty and the Beast,’” she said. “It’s not just some shiny, happy play. There’s more substance to it.”

Diana Lolli, who portrays Mrs. Winthrop, the headmistress, said the challenging nature of the play is keeping the cast on its toes and helping to bring them together as a team. “Being in a play, it’s like a family,” she said. “You get to meet and become friends with people you might not otherwise get to know.” For Brenna McLaughlin, acting is fun “because you’re getting the chance to play someone who’s different from you. “I really enjoy it,” she said. “Theater is definitely something I’d like to continue to do when I’m in college.”

Two wrestlers reach district

Ready Roundup

Boys basketball team coping with close losses By JARROD ULREY ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Coming off a season in which it advanced to a Division III state semifinal, it wasn’t easy for the Ready High School boys basketball team to stomach a regular season in which it endured double-digit losses. However, the Silver Knights did have reason to be optimistic entering this year’s district tournament considering the manner of most of their losses during the season’s second half. After beating Worthington Christian 43-42 on Jan. 14 to improve to 3-7, Ready lost four consecutive games, including three by six points or fewer. In addition, the Silver Knights lost seven of their final nine regular-season games, with six of the losses being by six points or fewer, including setbacks against CCL-foes DeSales (4643 on Feb. 7), Watterson (52-48 on Feb. 4) and Hartley (60-54 on Jan. 28) as well as the district’s fourth seed in Division III, North Union (54-51 on Feb. 15). “It’s been a frustrating month,” coach Don Worstell said. “We’ve played pretty good basketball the last month and our inexperience has allowed us to lose almost every night.”

Ready began the postseason Feb. 23 against Berne Union, with the winner playing top-seeded Heath in the second round at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at Newark. Better health and a maturing group of young players helped the Silver Knights become a more competitive unit over the second half of the season. Senior Christian Knapper missed the first 10 games of the season as he recovered from a broken leg but has been a key contributor since his return. He scored 13 points against North Union. Junior guard Derek Farmer also has been a steady contributor after missing the season’s first six games with a shoulder injury. He scored 30 points against Hartley. In addition, freshmen Jimmy Hanley, Brady Taylor and Matt Yoho have become steady contributors after seeing little action early in the season. Taylor scored 17 in a 58-46 win over Wellington on Feb. 5. “(Better health has been) part of it, but I think also the freshmen have been with us for almost an entire season,” Worstell said. “We were so incredibly inexperienced coming into the season, but we’re athletic enough to be a good team. “It’s been a nice asset (having Knapper back). Christian is incredibly quick

the second round Feb. 23. If Ready pulled a second consecutive tournament upset against Bloom-Carroll, it would play Johnstown or Linden-McKinley in a district semifinal at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, at Olentangy Orange. While the Silver Knights were seeded 24th of 28 teams for the tournament, Johnstown and Linden were seeded 26th and 27th, respectively. The Johnnies opened the postseason by upsetting fourth-seeded Elgin 5547 on Feb. 16. “We’ve done a better job of executing, and if you get a couple wins, it does a lot for your confidence,” coach Joe Lang said. Alexis Mayle and Dani Pugh each scored 16 points against Centerburg to lead Ready, which built a 22-8 advantage by the end of the first quarter. After averaging 4.8 points through 16 games, Mayle averaged 16 points over the next five. Mayle and Nikki Scott also have stepped up in the area of rebounding, according to Lang. Pugh averaged a team-best 11.6 points through 21 games. “I got on Alexis and Nikki about doing a better job of rebounding,” Lang said. “They’ve improved their effort See READY, page A6

The kids don’t want it to end. They are a close bunch and I don’t think they want it to be over with just yet.” •The boys basketball team was 10-10 overall before playing Centerburg on Feb. 22 in the opening round of the Division III district tournament. Looking at the district meet, Parsley said, “Wow, what competition there will be out there on Saturday. I think my experience and my age will help me a little in that seniors are usually prepared for the pressures involved with this meet where, as a freshman, you can be harder on yourself and maybe stress over errors too much. But for me at the district meet, it is going to be very important that I have fun and enjoy the experience. It is my last year in high school and it is, conceivably, my last gymnastics meet, so I want to hit all my events and get back to the state championship meet.” Parsley sounds like a winner. Good luck to all of this week’s competitors. I’ll see you at a meet.

The Chinaberry tree was, for a time, a popular, low-budget tree used for ornamental purposes, most often in the southern United States. Singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell recalled how the trees lined the housing development in the Houston neighborhood in which he grew up – a significant enough memory that he named his new book, a memoir of sorts, Chinaberry Sidewalks. “The book is not at all about Rodney Crowell the songwriter,” he said. “It’s about my childhood growing up in Houston. “It’s mostly about the arc of my parents’ marriage,” he said. “My mother and father were the son and daughter of sharecroppers, with seventh/eighth grade educations. They migrated to Houston, and lived in a housing development where a lot of that workforce lived. The place was landscaped with Chinaberry trees, which had these green berries. As kids, we used to have Chinaberry wars.” Crowell said he was deliberate in moving the content of the book away from his career as a singer and songwriter – a career that has seen him boast hit records and have his songs recorded by countless artists, including Waylon Jennings, Alan Jackson, Crystal Gayle, Heart, Keith Urban, Bob Seger, the Oak Ridge Boys, Tim McGraw and more. The book, he said, is not merely a companion piece to his records for fans. “There are stories (in the book) about music, but only as it applies as part of my environment,” Crowell added, explaining that he didn’t feel a book of stories about his career “was going to garner a readership.” “I don’t want to sound insulting to the loyalty of my fans, but I don’t think of myself as an iconic star,” Crowell said. “I was going to sustain a relationship with readers with my ability to tell stories. Crowell is hardly shelving his songwriting career. In fact, he said that working on the book both sharpened his songwriting senses and changed his understanding of songwriting. torn up the blues circuit, but would sound equally at home if rock radio should ever be is ready for a new blues diva in the Tina Turner/Bonnie Raitt mold. “With the book I discovered I couldn’t slack off,” he said, further explaining that “the narrative has to be maintained. “That kind of day-in-day-out work is a sharp thing for a songwriter to do, to maintain.” His one-man tour is not your standard book tour, either. “I read excerpts from the book, I tell stories, I sing songs,” he said. “It was a lot of work on presentation and pacing.” Crowell did the audio version of the book himself, which gave him the opportunity to hear how stories and segments of stories sounded out loud. Additionally, he was able to make notes on how he would present the excerpts, both finding a balance between serious and humorous selections and also how he would weave the elements together into a live show. “I have to kind of free-form a background of a story into the different segments of the book,” he said. “Then those passages had to be extended so that the audience is given a similar taste of each song.” For more from The Beat’s interview with Rodney Crowell, read the BeatBlog at www.ThisWeekNews.com.
