District unveils new pay-to-play fees, cuts Regardless of May levy outcome, high school athletes each face $200 per sport By MARLA K. KUHLMAN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Gahanna Superintendent Mark White began painting a picture of what the district will look like next year, when the number of teachers will be reduced by the equivalent of an elementary school staff and a $200 per athlete, per sport fees will be implemented at the high school. During the Feb. 10 board of education meeting, White said staff reductions and
fee implementation will occur, no matter the outcome of the district’s proposed 5.2-mill levy on the May 3 ballot. What does hinge on the May ballot, however, is transportation for high school students. “If it passes, I will recommend no change in transportation,” he said. “Currently busing is provided one mile out.” The district would save $320,000 if it didn’t provide transportation to high school students, and White will recommend that
change if the levy fails. Executive director of business & school improvement Kristen Groves said half of all high school students, or 1,100 of 2,126 students, currently rely on district transportation. “We don’t want high school kids to have to find transportation,” she said. “If the levy passes in May, we will keep the current schedule — K-12.” In discussing pay-to-participate fees, White said parents and boosters aren’t in
favor of charging, but they understand the need. Athletics director Justin Sanford said 70 athletic boosters and coaches have been studying pay-to-par- Mark White ticipate fees since last fall. Of 32 schools in the Ohio Capital Conference (OCC), he said Gahanna is one
of four school districts without fees. “When we looked at what the fee would be if the November levy passed, we talked about $50 and $75 range because there isn’t much of a loss of participation with those numbers,” he said. “We still aren’t at a doomsday scenario. “Our number one priority is to keep participation numbers high. Commission rejects fence, enclosure ThisWeek Community Newspapers
A fence extension at Clark Hall and an enclosure for a Morrison Road business — both already erected without permission — were rejected Feb. 9 by Gahanna’s Planning Commission. Development director Sadicka White said the fence has already been extended to the north side of the project at 380 Granville Street. “We discovered the fence has already been erected,” she said. “It has been extended and the applicant is here asking for indulgence. “It was put up without your particular approval…. We have concern it was erected without prior approval.” In a report to the commission, planning

There will be no primary election for the Gahanna mayoral race on May’s ballot, after candidate Ryan Jolley withdrew his name from the contest last week. Gahanna voters will choose between incumbent Becky Stinchcomb and challenger Jim McGregor during the November general election. Jolley announced Feb. 11 that he decided to pull out of the race in order to run, instead, for an atlarge council seat in November. He filed a letter to withdraw from the mayor’s race with the Franklin County Board of Elections last week, so his petitions weren’t even considered for certification on Monday, Feb. 14. Jolley said his decision to enter the mayor’s race and his decision to exit the race were predicated on the same consideration: ensuring that Gahanna continues its forward progress. “Our former mayor’s challenge of mayor Stinchcomb created a new dynamic in the race,” he said. Jolley said he was pressed for
time to pull petitions, gather signatures, and file the signed petitions. “I had to make a quick decision to act Ryan Jolley in order to have the opportunity to run for mayor if I chose to do so,” he said. Ultimately, Jolley said, he decided to maintain his original plan to run for council at-large in November. He had applied for the recent council vacancy that was filled by Andre Porter. Jolley said he met with Stinchcomb “to discuss our vision for continuing Gahanna’s success.” “I feel it will be best to work together on the issues on which we agree, rather than creating more divisiveness in what is already likely to be a contentious election,” Jolley said. “Serving on city council will allow me the opportunity to affect policy by working closely with other council members and the mayor as we continue to build on the mayor’s success during dif-
administrator Bonnie Gard said the reason for the extension had not been made clear to the city by any of the involved parties: Gahanna schools, Quandel, Greenscapes or Lannis Fence. Rick Fey, of Bird Houk architects and landscape designer for the project, said the fence was erected at the request of the schools. “They were interested in another level of control,” he said. Commissioner David Andrews said he couldn’t believe professionals would go ahead and add an extension without seeking approval. Fey said the intention was to have included the extension as part of a prior request. Approval had previously been given for the fence on the western boundary to separate the site with its western neighbors.

If the purpose is to maintain control of the area, commissioner Don Shepherd said the gates on the fence defeat that purpose. Commissioner Jennifer Price said the initial fence was approved because it made sense with boundaries and what was already there. “The idea of fencing in the entire parcel, I’m not comfortable,” she said. “Are there specific issues you’re having with parking?” Fey said the schools are trying to “cover bases in the future.” Commissioner Bob Westwood said Clark Hall is a public school, and it’s a public parking area. “Trying to restrict this is incomprehensible to me right now,” he added. “It seems like a hidden agenda.” See REJECTED, page A2

Gahanna City Council will consider cooperative agreements with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) on Feb. 22 for the widening of Hamilton Road and the extension of the Big Walnut Trail. Assistant city engineer Mike Andrako on Feb. 14 announced that the city would receive $14.2million in federal funding to widen Hamilton Road, from Carpenter to U.S. Route 62, with construction expected to begin in spring 2016. Funds include $1.6-million for right-of-way acquisition and $12.6-million for construction. The total project cost of about $17.7-million includes right-ofway acquisition ($2-million) and construction ($15.7-million). The local match — the city’s share — will be 20 percent of the right-of-way acquisition and construction costs, estimated at $400,000 and $3.1-million, respectively.
Andrako said the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission’s (MORPC) Surface Transportation Program funds recently were awarded for the project. “We’ve tried many ways to get funding,” he said. “It’s finally being funded through a federal grant, and it’s the most of any (local project) and includes some right of way.” City engineer Karl Wetherholt said the city has been working on what’s referred to as the “Hamilton Road Central” project since 1996. Andrako said the city and the Franklin County Engineer’s Office have been working on the project for many years, and Gahanna has a cooperative agreement with the county in which the two agree to split the local project costs, including environmental, design, right-of-way acquisition and construction. ODOT will administer the construction portion of the work. City finance director Angel See COUNCIL, page A2

FEES, CUTS Continued from page A1 they went to $200.” The plan beginning next school year will be to charge $200 per athlete, per sport with no cap at the high school. Cost for middle school athletics will be $100 per athlete, per sport with no caps. If the May levy passes, Sanford said, a sliding scale will be considered. That plan would include $200 for the first sport, $100 for the second sport and the third sport would be free at the high school. At the middle schools, cost would be $100 for the first sport, $50 for the second, and free for the third. Family caps would also be considered. Gahanna currently offers 26 varsity sports and 48 junior varsity and club sports. Last year, there were 746 individual athletes and 1,026 total participants, which includes the same athlete in multiple sports. In addition to athletic fees, White said he will recommend an increase in instructional fees to $35 from $25, implementing a $10 graduation fee and increasing the all-day kindergarten fee to $250 from $235. District treasurer Julio Valladares said the administration has been working hard to sustain an efficient, frugal budget that is prudent in its use of taxpayers’ dollars. He said $7-million will be recommended for cuts from the budg-
et, including $1.5-million in utilities, supplies, field trips, technology, classroom materials through reductions in building/administrative budgets. The other $5.5-million will be recommended in personnel cuts. A breakdown of the recommended cuts by category include: certified, $4.5-million; administrators, $1.2-million; classified, $342,484; and miscellaneous (transportation cut) and increased fees, $765,481. In discussing the certified staff, White said up to 40 teachers will be included in the reduction in force, but about 20 positions would be lost overall. “We lost about 40 positions last year,” he added. “It will be another 30 to 40 this year when all is said and done. That’s about an elementary school.” He said teachers will be notified the first week of March. “We’re trying to spread it out among the elementary, middle and high schools,” he said. “We will look at the big picture at the end of the month. We see some being from the regular classroom, some electives. It will be on the March agenda.” Valladares said he will post the recommended cuts on the district’s web site at www.gahannaschools.org, but he said the picture changes almost daily. During last week’s board meeting, the board accepted the resignations of many longtime em-

Continued from page A1 Andrews said an original discussion involved bike racks for students. “If a gate is locked, how will kids get there with bikes?” he asked. “This is not what was originally approved. It was originally to screen apartments. Police won’t be able to see. I think it’s wrong.” Shepherd opposed the fence because of the gates. “For security, it creates a bigger problem,” he added. The commission also rejected a request by Cigara, 471I Morrison Road, for a nonpermanent wind/element barrier at the front of the business for an outdoor seating area. White said the business, specializing in tobacco products, wanted to provide a place for customers to sit in front of the building. “This was constructed without approval,” she said. “The proposed use doesn’t meet code requirements. Smoking indoors is prohibited in Ohio. It also obstructs the front of the building.” Andrews said he happened to drive by the business and it looked “absolutely tacky.” No one representing Cigara attended the meeting.
Continued from page A1 Mumma said the city has been planning for the project for years, and $1.2-million has been reserved for it in the general fund. The project includes a major widening of the road with bikeways, a multi-use path from two to five lanes and modern roundabouts at Clark State and the entrance to the county MRDD facility. A one-mile, eight-foot multiple-use path will be on the west side, as well as a five-foot sidewalk on the east side and eightfoot multiple-use path on the west. Council isn’t authorizing any funds for the project at this time, but Andrako said legislation is needed, “saying we will work with ODOT.” Similarly, council will consider a cooperative agreement with ODOT to extend section 8 of the Big Walnut Trail from the Gal-

Stinchcomb is running for her third full term as mayor. Prior to
becoming Gahanna mayor, Stinchcomb was elected as the Ward Three city council representatives five times, serving for almost 10 years while holding a fulltime senior management job in the private sector. McGregor is current executive director of the Ohio League of Conservation Voters, a nonprofit, bi-partisan organization working on energy and conservation issues. Andrako said the extension is in accordance with the parks department’s Big Walnut Trail plan. Attributable Transportation Enhancement funds through MORPC recently were awarded for the project in the amount of about $434,623, and the estimated construction date is spring 2014. The local match will be 20 percent of the construction cost, or about $108,656. All design and environmental work will be funded entirely by the city. Eventually, the environmental work and final design will need to be authorized and funded, according to Andrako. ODOT will administer the construction portion of the work, necessitating legislation to program the project.

In brief Exemption offers property tax relief
As it were
Columbus’ rivers did not provide a useful waterway With the opening of the Scioto Mile, the Scioto River will once again be an attraction that will draw people both to downtown and the city as a whole. After all, people were drawn to the forks of the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers a couple of centuries ago because the water was clear and clean. And it was widely believed that a place where two rivers came together would soon be a center of profitable river trade. The water was clear and clean and had been drawing people to its banks for several thousand years. Native Americans lived here for centuries and built large Indian mounds nearby. Mound Street is named for one of them. Thousands of deer came down to the river to drink in molting season and covered the water in a blanket of shedding deer fur. With a wry directness, Native American gave the stream a new name — “Hairy River.” But the profitable river trade the pioneers expected to undertake with huge cargo laden flatboats was not to be. The river was too narrow in many places and the current too treacherous. Only at a few times of year was the water high enough to carry the great flatboats. And ED at that time the current was so LENTZ swift that many boats were lost. The pioneer settlements of central Ohio were rather isolated for a number of years. Until the canal came. Canals are not a new idea. One can find them at any number of places in the ancient world where people needed an artificial waterway for one reason or another. But canals are expensive to build and costly to maintain. For that reason they are often built by governments and not by private enterprise. As the land across the Appalachian Mountains began to be settled after the American Revolution, men like Henry Clay began to argue that government should finance “internal improvements” like roads, canals and river work to “open the West” to commerce. And all of this should be financed by the federal government. Of course many people in the East were not thrilled with the idea that their taxes should subsidize public works that would help the

Ohio River valley compete with their own commerce. So canals were more a dream than a reality for a number of years. Then the extraordinary success of the Erie Canal linking the East to the Great Lakes captured the imagination of the country in the years after the War of 1812. Soon many Ohioans were talking about canals and building one in the state. But talk was really the only result. Like many other times in the state’s history, forceful leadership was needed to bring canals to Ohio. In this case, that leadership was provided by Ethan Allen Brown. As early as 1816, Brown, a Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, had written to Governor DeWitt Clinton of New York seeking information about the canal system of that state. When Brown was elected governor in 1818, he proposed building a canal and continued to press for its construction. In the end the Ohio General Assembly agreed and studies were made as to possible locations. Two major canal systems — the Miami and Erie in the west and the Ohio and Erie in the east — were built with the support and supervision of a number of people as committed to the project as Gov. Brown had been. Important among them was Alfred Kelley. Kelley had come to Columbus in 1816 to represent Cleveland in the assembly. He served for the next several decades, eventually representing Columbus as well. As a member of the Canal Commission he personally supervised the construction of much of the canal. When the economic depression of the 1830s threatened Ohio’s ability to pay interest due on its canal bonds, Kelley would pledge his own Columbus home as collateral to ensure payment on the bonds.

Through the efforts of Kelley and many others, Columbus was linked to the main line of the Ohio and Erie Canal by a Feeder Canal that entered the city near the place where Bicentennial Park is today. In 1860, a state arsenal — now the Cultural Arts Center — would be built next to the canal to permit easy movement of arms and ordnance in and out of the capital city. In 2007, state leaders expanded the homestead exemption to make property tax relief available to more than a half million additional senior citizens and permanently and totally disabled Ohioans. The homestead exemption dates back to 1971, and offers those who qualify the chance to shield part of their “homestead” — a dwelling and up to one acre — from property taxation. Until the expansion in 2007, most senior citizens and disabled Ohioans were excluded because of income tests. The redesigned exemption offers all eligible homeowners, regardless of income, the opportunity to shield up to $25,000 of the market value of their homestead from property taxation. That means a home valued at $100,000 will generally be taxed as if it was valued at $75,000. On average, those who qualify are saving $400 per year. Seniors aged 65 and older and disabled Ohioans must apply with their local county auditor in order to take advantage of the homestead exemption. Applications may be submitted after the first Monday in January and on or before the first Monday in June. For a copy of the application, visit http://tax.ohio.gov/ documents/forms/real_property/DTE_105A.pdf. The application can also be obtained by calling GahannaJefferson Public Schools treasurer Julio Valladares at 478-5534.

Columbus. As late as 1832, Columbus was a frontier village of a few thousand people. By 1834, Columbus was a city of five thousand people. Large numbers of travelers and immense quantities of freight arrived by both road and water and more than a few Columbus residents made their fortune in the new crossroads capital city. The canal and its people captured the imagination of the city. Longtime resident Emily Stewart later remembered, “The first canal boats seemed like fairy palaces. They were painted white and the windows had green shutters and scarlet curtains. The inside panels of the cabins contained pictures and mirrors. The officers of the passenger boats were gentlemen. The cabin was a dining and sitting room in the daytime, but was converted into a sleeping apartment at night. There were staterooms at each end for the ladies, whose comfort was further promoted by the attentions of a polite and diligent stewardess. For years after the canal was opened, the boats always came in with a band of music playing on board. The captain of the boat usually played the clarinet for the entertainment of the passengers…” But all of this growth and success came with a price. The riverfront between the Main Street Canal Basin and the Broad Street Bridge came to be filled with docks for canal boats and warehouses lined the waterfront. Factories, inexpensive housing and even less attractive taverns soon followed. The river, once clear and pristine, soon became little more than an open sewer and a place few people willingly visited for leisurely recreation. The golden age of the Ohio and Erie Canal lasted for less than 30 years. By 1850, the first railroad had arrived in Columbus and within a few years, the canal began a long, slow decline. An attempt to revive the canal around the turn of the century was unsuccessful as well. Ed Lentz writes a history column for ThisWeek.

Meadowbrooke plan to return to planning commission Feb. 23 By MARLA K. KUHLMAN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
A proposal that increases the density of the Meadowbrooke subdivision, 5593 Havens Corner Road, has been postponed, again, to the next public hearing of the Gahanna Planning Commission on Wednesday, Feb. 23. David Hodge, representing Brookewood Construction Co., requested the postponement on Feb. 9 in order to “do more homework” and “revise” the plan. “We’re doing what we can to address your concerns and the residents,” he told the commission. “We’re working toward a better plan.” For the past few months, several related pieces of legislation have been examined at length with the original requests including a variance to allow an increase in overall residential density from 9 to 15 lots; zoning 4.7 acres Residential Overlay District/Single Family, and dedicating 1.297 acres of parkland. When Hodge delivered a revision at a Feb. 2 workshop, one lot had been removed from the southeast corner of the plan, reducing the density only from 15 to 14. The revision also removed a roundabout, leaving just one shared driveway on the plan. The property was rezoned in late 2006 to residential-overlay district to permit a nine-lot single-family subdivision with a preservation zone setback area. Havens Corner Road resident Rod Wilcox said he would be the recipient of increased water runoff if a new plan with more density is approved. “They are talking 60 foot lots backed up to a beautiful subdivi-
sion,” he said. “Farm Creek is a beautiful development. To have 14 lots (in a $250,000 price range) is a mistake. It’s wrong. I oppose the rezoning.” Several other residents spoke in opposition of the plan, pointing to lower-priced homes on smaller lots not matching the character of other neighborhoods along Havens Corner. In order to demonstrate how many neighbors attended the commission meeting to show their concerns, about 15 to 20 residents stood. Many of them took turns addressing the commission to oppose the plan. Under the revised plan, the average home in Meadowbrooke would be 2,500 square feet and sell for between $250,000 and $275,000. Hodge previously told the commission there’s a market for homes in that price range, and they’re trying to offer a product that will sell lots. Planning and zoning administrator Bonnie Gard has said Gahanna is seeing housing permits in the $400,000, $500,000 and $600,000 price range, and she hasn’t seen permits in the lower price range. In other commission action, requests by Advanced Civil Design LLC and Value Recovery Group II, LLC for a final development plat and certificate of appropriateness were approved for a clubhouse at Central Park, 785 Science Blvd. Deputy development director Anthony Jones said the clubhouse plans were before the commission in 2009, and there have been slight modifications to that plan. Jones said the construction of the 3,628-square-foot club house will include an existing train sta-
tion building that will be disassembled at its current location and reassembled. He added that the building has been slightly altered from the last approved submission by adding a fitting studio at the southwest corner of the building. The clubhouse will also feature a learning academy, pro shop and club room. Dwight McCabe, of Value Recovery Group, said the idea for the project originated several years ago. Although the idea was embraced, he said several problems arose, including the cost. He said everyone wants to get the golf course open, and many issues have been resolved in the past few weeks. “Things came together quickly and the city has been phenomenal in locking arms,” McCabe added. The nine-hole golf course will also have a 12-tee driving range. Fifty-two parking spaces will be available, and the developer is working with the city to obtain a shared parking agreement with the property to the north for any overflow or special event parking. Commissioner David Thom questioned whether there’s space provided or a separate building for maintenance. “There’s leasable space adjacent,” McCabe said. “Most maintenance equipment they would bring in. From a golf cart point of view, it’s really a walking course. There will be a few carts available for handicapped.” The commission also approved a recommendation to council to vacate the southerly branch of the railroad on lot 29 of the Industrial Zone.

Artists sought for new gallery program Local artists are being sought to participate in Gahanna’s inaugural “ARTSpeak,” an art gallery and showcase program to be held in conjunction with 2nd Saturdays events in 2011. Events coordinator Kate Mattison said the indoor/outdoor showcase will celebrate local artists and their talents, while providing attendees a first-hand opportunity to learn about and experience the creation of artwork.? “I am hoping to have approximately 10 artists at each of the first three events, and at the last (Sep-
tember) event, which is a full art theme I’d like to have more,“ Mattison said. “However, all of those factors will depend on the response we get from the public.” Whether you are a potter, painter, photographer, basket weaver, jewelry maker, woodworker or performer, the city encourages you to apply as a participant to showcase and sell your work at the summer events. Accepted artists may showcase their work at any of the 2nd Saturday events, including the September “Art ‘n Soul” special-
themed event. Mattison said artists will be charged a nominal fee of $25 per event or $75 for all four to display and sell their work. Space is limited, and the application deadline is May 1. Interested artists may contact Mattison at kate.mattison@gahanna.gov or (614) 342-4250 to have an application sent or e-mailed to them. Second Saturdays is a family event held at Creekside on the second Saturday of each month, June through September. — Marla Kuhlman

Whiskey Ranch gets nod for front patio By MARLA K. KUHLMAN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
If you give customers curb appeal by offering an outdoor patio, surrounding by flowers — and a good menu — they will come. That’s what restaurateur Jim Velio told Gahanna’s Planning Commission Feb. 9, during a plea to approve a certificate of appropriateness for a front patio with black rodiron fence at Whiskey Ranch, 154 N. Hamilton Rd. Architect David Betz said the idea is to provide space for Whiskey Ranch to have outdoor seating, and the proposed 42-inch high fence would add a pleasant, visual look. Velio said he would pull his recent investment in the business and drop plans for spending $100,000 on a kitchen, if the planners denied the patio. He said he got involved with the business about two months ago with business partner Mario Nedelkoski. “I love Gahanna,” Velio said. “I got involved with this club, because I see a potential with Mario. I don’t want a club, but a nice place with a nice kitchen. … I’m here to make things better. Look at our reputation.”
Nedelkoski said a front patio helps business during the summer, and he wouldn’t have to continually heat and cool 10,000 square feet of indoor space. “We want to soften the look to make it not so much of a late night destination, but a neighborhood pub,” he added. “In the near future, we’ll invest $100,000 into a kitchen to bring food and make it more of an entertainment aspect with food and dancing. We’ll make it more inviting for a greater customer base.” Gahanna development director Sadicka White said police chief Dennis Murphy noted that his department has responded to multiple calls about fights and domestic disputes related to the establishment. He was concerned the outdoor patio would further exacerbate the problems. Several planning members also expressed concerns about smoking in the proposed patio. Commissioner Jennifer Price said it’s “admirable” the business partners want to improve the establishment, and make it more than a late night destination. “My concern is that it never would convert to a bar/grill,” she said. “We could create a situation that exasperates current be-
havior.” Velio said he has been in the restaurant business for 18 years. He’s the founder of Jimmy V’s Grill & Pub with locations in German Village, Grandview, the Dublin area and Westerville. He also recently bought Otie’s in Hilliard. “The patio isn’t for smoking,” he said. “It will be nice to have a cocktail and have nice conversation (among) flowers. I’m here to make things better.” Commissioner David Thom asked Velio if he would have a presence at the business. “At the beginning, I’ll be there the first six to eight months,” he said. “I’ll make sure it’s operated right.” Thom suggested, and the commission approved, a one-year limit on the certificate of appropriateness that will be re-evaluated in 2012. Considering what the business partners propose, White supported Thom’s proposal. “Based on what they indicate and if they accomplish what they say and the patio would improve the looks, that would be good,” she said. “We would have a year to see what occurs, and they can ask for a continuation of the patio. We’ll see if they change the reputation, the patronage.”

Foundation hopes to round up support for grants By MARLA K. KUHLMAN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Wanted: Pardners in Excellence. That’s what the Gahanna-Jefferson Education Foundation (GJEF) is trying to lasso for its country-western-themed seventh annual Celebration of Excellence, set for 7 p.m. at the Villa Milano, 1630 Shrock Road, on Saturday, Feb. 26. Dale Foor, GJEF president/GJ schools community services coordinator, said the event’s reward will be promoting excellence in education through grants. This year’s overall goal is to at least match the $91,000 that was generated in 2010, and $24,000
is being sought via pledges for “Fund a Need” to purchase SMART technology accessories. “We say supporting SMART technology is a wise investment,” Foor said. “We want to raise $2,000 for each building and $4,000 for the high school.” The GJEF’s “Fund A Need” was established in 2010, when $21,000 was raised to purchase state-of-the-art microscopes for middle school students. The Fund A Need initiative is supported through pledges and will go to SMART Board accessory packs and flip video cameras. Monies that are generated from the Celebration of Excellence through admission and live and
silent auctions go toward grants that are requested by staff to enhance educational opportunities. After the current eighth cycle of funding grants, the GJEF will have funded more than 260 grants in excess of $285,000. The foundation also allocates funds in the Care for Kids program, allowing district pupil services staff members to address special student needs. For this year’s celebration, Foor said there are some “absolutely wild auction items.” Seven live auction items include: a private concert by Gahanna’s Peligro, a local teen band that was selected as the best in the USA by SchoolJam; a house boat on the Cumberland River for

Where You Won’t Be Treated Like A Number!
If you lead, a child will follow your guidance
An innovator in his field, Jeffrey L. Angart, D.D.S., has been practicing for nearly 25 years. He has conducted extensive research and lectured nationally and internationally on cosmetic materials and tooth bonding. A graduate of OSU’s College of Dentistry, he holds a Bachelor of Science in Ceramic Engineering. The Center for Dental Health is a state-of-the-art practice where patients take an active role in their oral health. Dr. Angart’s professional team utilizes leading-edge technology in a serene setting to create a relaxed and calming environment. Custom esthetic crowns and veneers are created in the Center for Dental Arts laboratory which complements the practice.
In the spirit of National Children’s Dental Health Month, be sure your family follows these tips to ensure good oral care habits develop early: • Brush and floss your child’s teeth twice a day until he or she can adequately do it without assistance, between 5 and 7. • Start brushing your child’s teeth with water as soon as the first tooth appears. Begin using a dab of fluoridated toothpaste about the size of a pea when your child is old enough not to swallow the paste. • Check with your dentist to make sure your child is getting enough fluoride, and ask about sealants, a thin protective barrier that helps prevent tooth decay. • Be sure your child is using an appropriately sized brush. Many toothbrushes have an age range on the package. Ask your dentist if you are uncertain. • Use a simple two- or three-minute timer. Our Center for Dental Health keeps plenty on hand and would love for your child to have one. Timers help children brush long enough and some toothbrushes even have built-in timers. One minute is not sufficient to remove bacteria and build up. • Begin flossing your child’s teeth as soon as there are two that touch. Use a floss holder or floss pick to ease the process or make it easier for an independent flosser. • Encourage your child to drink from a regular cup by the first birthday. Don’t allow your baby or toddler to go to bed with a bottle of milk, formula, sugar water or juice because the liquids contain sugars and/or acids that can pool around teeth and cause serious decay. If you heed this advice, your children will be sure to one day demonstrate life-long healthy habits to children of their own. Smile ... you deserve it.

In brief
GRANTS Continued from page A6 dinner. Foor said a special silent-auction item will be a commemorative bench in Veterans Plaza with half the proceeds going to the Honor Flight. In all, Foor said, more than 500 live and silent auction items are being donated by area business partners and individuals. A vacation raffle, featuring two Southwestern Airline tickets to anywhere in the U.S. along with $500, will also be held. Local restaurants will be providing hors d’oeuvres and desserts that will compliment the special western theme menu prepared by Villa Milano’s. A special preview party will start at 5:30 p.m. for corporate and bronze ($150 per couple) and silver ($250 per couple) patrons. They will be treated to special hors d’oeuvres and beverages as they have a chance to browse the auction items. Individual tickets cost $50. Scott Mounts, GJEF board liaison, said Feb. 10 that only 100 tickets are left for what’s expected to be a 450 person sellout. “Wear your country attire and be ready to hoedown,” he said. 1 Into its 16th year, RIVERDANCE still rules. It’s been seen live by more than 22 million people in 40 countries, has played more than 10,000 performances – and been written about by tens of thousands of Joe Moriarty arts writers all looking for the next clever play on words for something to do with feet and fast and Irish. Columbus native Joe Moriarty is the current lead in the dance spectacular, which plays five shows at the Palace Theatre Feb. 18-20. Tickets are $62.50-$22.50. 4 You’ve heard Broadway vet Liz Callaway’s voice even if you don’t know it. She’s also handled singing parts in animated features including Anastasia (performing the Academy Award-nominated Journey to the Past), Aladdin and the King of Thieves and Beauty and Liz Callaway the Beast, among a host of others. Of course, if you’ve seen the original casts of Miss Saigon, The Three Musketeers or The Look of Love, you’ve seen her and known it. Callaway joins the Columbus Symphony Orchestra for a pops concert celebrating the works of Stephen Sondheim (this year marks his 80th birthday) and Frank Loesser (marking the 100th an-

10 Jorge Gomez and his mu- traditional Cuban forms with Latin
sical compañeros were going to make timba music, despite what people told them about the challenges of finding audiences for the hybrid form among U.S. audiences. In 2000, Gomez found himself in Miami, reuniting with many friends from their days playing the clubs around Havana, Cuba. They had each had classical training alongside their cultural accumulation of Latin and Afro-Cuban musical styles like son, salsa and even santeria. And from Cuba, each had traveled with their families via a different geographical path to Miami — pianist/keyboardist Gomez first to Guatemala, others to far-flung places like Argentina, Italy and Spain. The friends were making music separately, in supporting bands for a number of top acts, but decided “we had to play this music we left behind,” Gomez told The Beat. “The first thing that came into my mind was that (timba) was the only thing we could do,” he added. “That or nothing.” Timba is a modern hybrid of
jazz, featuring instrumentation not typically found in Cuban music, resulting in something “a little deeper sounding and more energetic,” Gomez explained. The friends named their new band Tiempo Libre, or “free time,” as it started out as a side project for each. Despite what they were told about their music’s potential appeal to American audiences, Tiempo Libre didn’t stay a side project for long. “In 2004 we released our first album and got our first Grammy (Award) nomination. In 2006 we released our second album and got our second Grammy nomination,” Gomez related, with a chuckle that indicated he was being less than self-aggrandizing. Of course, those who told him it wouldn’t work had to be saying “OK, OK. We get the point.” Tiempo Libre has since earned a third Grammy nomination, and timba has taken Gomez and mates around the world. “U.S., Europe, Israel, Australia. We’re always getting a lot of support,” Gomez said. “It’s like ‘Wow, we know we’re doing the right thing.’”
Lots of vino and voluptuous food at Tucci’s in Dublin The first thing you notice when you tread into the terrific Tucci’s is a chalkboard with 16 special wines listed on it. These are all available in two-, four- and sixounce pours that will never be overoxidized because Tucci’s owns a fancy Enomatica machine. If you’ve never seen one, they’re sleek, state-of-the-art appliances that feature high-tech wine preservation systems and deliver automated pours. Given this fact — and the existence of about 150 more wines on Tucci’s menu — it’s clear vino is big here. But you could have gathered that from all the burgundyred accents in the casually elegant restaurant or from the convivial laughter bubbling up from its bustling, bottle-laden tables. Don’t think that Tucci’s is consistently busy just because of its hooch, though. No, this prettily
MENU by G.A. Benton golden-glowing eatery with both intimate and communal seating serves some of the best food around. Toss in a friendly and knowledgeable waitstaff, and you have one of the top-tier restaurants in the area. Tucci’s menu is big but not overwhelming. It’s filled with influences from Italy, Asia, California and even Hawaii. Most of these influences surface in the huge Outrigger Canoe Combo appetizer ($17). That fun, fry-happy app came with a boatload of: spicy scallops (perfectly “blackened,” served with a mustardy sauce and cooling gorgonzola); calamari laced with ba-

nana peppers and Parmesan (matched with a sort of Italian salsa); colorful Big Island Chips (made with root veggies like taro and lotus); and a shiitake, tomato and onion filled eggroll with a cit-
rusy soy sauce. For a more modest starter, pick the Bibb Salad ($7). Like an elegant upgrade from that popular and still-resurgent iceberg wedge, its tender leaves of bibb lettuce were coated in a horseradishy gorgonzola dressing and further flattered by crispy bacon lardons and diced tomatoes. Some of the best dining deals here are Tucci’s good, handmade pizzas ($10-$12) and stylish pastas ($10-$18, available in smaller sized and priced portions). From the latter, the Spaghetti Bolognese ($10 for the “small” — it was big) was a winner. A chunky, believable and completely delicious bolognese sauce was tossed with whole wheat pasta. The sophisticated entree had a complex, parmesan-enhanced richness slightly leavened by bits of bright tomato.
Tucci’s 35 N. High St., Dublin 614-792-3466 Web: tuccisbistro.com Cuisine: Italian Price: $$$ ($20-$30 per person) Patio: Yes Hours: 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday-Friday lunch, 5-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 5-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday Tucci’s proudly serves organically raised, grass-fed beef. This makes its great 14-ounce New York Strip Steak ($35) a relatively guiltrestrained splurge. Beautifully grillseared, it was thick and lean but super juicy and had a mild but nice “chew.” Its very fine plate mates (garlicky sauteed spinach and mushrooms, fingerling potatoes and a fruity “cabernet demi”) were
cleverly designed to keep the focus on the high-grade meat. Seafood’s prevalent here, too. It comes in various varieties and styles, but even fish eschewers probably couldn’t resist the refined fish-n-chips treatment of the Chorizo-Crusted Grouper ($23). I loved its crunchy crust (with bits of spicy sausage) and goat cheese potato cake as well as its spicy “tomatoscallion emulsion.” To finish, the buttery and caramel-y Apple Tartlette ($7) — with big clusters of candied nuts plus smoky, spicy and gingery notes — was more complex than I might’ve thought. Ditto for this excellent restaurant. To read G.A. Benton’s blog visit ColumbusDiningGuide.com.
Professional kitchen hopes to attract food entrepreneurs A vacant warehouse on the city’s East Side soon will be transformed into commercial kitchen for bakers, candy-makers and mobile push-cart operators. The Economic and Development Policy Institute is developing the 8,000-square-foot space as a way to encourage job growth through entrepreneurship, said Bob Kramer, director of food services and safety for the nonprofit agency. “The basis of the community bakery and commissary area is to provide a commercial setting for those food entrepreneurs who want to start a business,” said Kramer, former food-safety supervisor for Columbus Public Health. “At the same time we can provide them a menu of services, including business training, food-safety training, marketing and also loans, if necessary.” The facility, off I-670 at 1655 Old Leonard Ave., is expected to open by June 1. The space will be split up into to two areas. The bakery will have four
separate bake stations, each equipped with a convection oven, large mixer, preparation table, reach-in cooler, sinks, stovetop range and other necessary equipment. The mobile food-cart commissary will have individual cart storage units equipped with a secure fence and locked door, and other essential kitchen amenities. In addition, the warehouse will have a walk-in cooler and freezer available for cold storage along with an area for dry storage available for all who use the facility. State law allows some home-based companies to produce food – jellies, jams, pretzels and bread, for example – for resale. The EDPI facility, meanwhile, provides those businesses with an opportunity to expand by working with commercial equipment in a larger space that’s licensed by the Ohio Depart-

ment of Agriculture and Columbus Public Health, Kramer said. Push-cart operators, which are not self-sufficient and need to work from a base of operations, also could find the new facility attractive, he said. Kramer said that although a pricing structure has
not been set, the organization is looking at hourly rentals for the bakery and longer-term leases for the mobile food-cart commissary “We’re going to be open to whatever their needs are,” Kramer said. For more information, call 614-732-0896.

Girls team looking for crisper finishes By JARROD ULREY ThisWeek Community Newspapers
When Gahanna Lincoln High School girls basketball coach Rick Hauser looks back at the six losses his team endured during the regular season, it’s not difficult for him to see a trend. In all but one of the losses, the Lions’ inability to perform effectively during the game’s critical moments cost them. An example of Gahanna’s late-game struggles came Feb. 11 in a 46-38 loss to Reynoldsburg, which is the No. 1 seed
for the Division I district tournament. Holding a 31-30 lead, the Raiders made 3-pointers on three consecutive offensive possessions to stretch their advantage to 10. The Lions had an opportunity to put the frustration from the close losses behind them when they opened the postseason Feb. 16 against Mount Vernon. If seventh-seeded Gahanna got past the Yellow Jackets, it will play Briggs or Westerville Central in the second round at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, at Olentangy.
“When you take a look at the six losses we had, five of them we were in the game,” Hauser said. “When you look at those five losses, there was a stretch in the fourth quarter of every one of those that cost us the game. We have a lot of different kids who can step up at different times. We just need to execute when the game is on the line.” Mount Vernon was 3-17 entering the matchup with the Lions. Briggs finished the regular season 12-8 overall and placed third in the
City League-South Division at 10-4. The Bruins are led by seniors Shawnee Allen (5-foot-5 guard), Tabitha Biegler (5-9 guard/forward) and Tabetha Barber (5-11 forward), junior Charlee Roark (5-8 guard) and freshman Nolla Harris (5-9 guard/forward). Westerville Central finished 9-11 during the regular season, including a 7-7 mark in the OCC-Cardinal Division. Top Warhawks include seniors Rachel Dolby (5-10 post player), Abby King (5-10 forward), Bri Pond (5-6 guard), Tabbytha Walker (5-5 guard)
and Aly Jurcenko (5-7 guard). The Lions didn’t have any players score in double figures against Reynoldsburg, as sophomore guard Quiera Lampkins led with nine points. Gahanna was without sophomore guard Reyna Montgomery, who has been battling a sprained knee and was expected to miss the tournament opener against Mount Vernon. “We’ve learned that we don’t know who’s going to step up from game-toSee BASKETBALL, page C3

League features tourney favorites I don’t see it happening this year, but it certainly would be no big surprise if all three Division I girls basketball district-champion trophies awarded March 5 at Olentangy Liberty High School go to members of the OCC-Ohio Division. That was the case a year ago when KURTIS Reynoldsburg, ADAMS Pickerington North and Gahanna emerged from their respective brackets to turn the regional at Otterbein into a de facto OCC-Ohio postseason tournament. The Raiders won it in classic March Madness style, too, stunning North 45-34 in the final as coach Dave Butcher lost to a Reynoldsburg team for the first time in his career. Now, the top-seeded Raiders are looking like a virtual lock in their bracket. They swept North during the regular season to capture their first OCC-Ohio title and show that last year’s upset was no fluke. Moreover, nobody from central Ohio has beaten them yet. North, meanwhile, is seeded fifth and is the second-lowest seeded team in its bracket behind third-seeded Olentangy Orange, which I think might be in over its head should the Pioneers advance to meet the Panthers in the final as the seedings indicate. Butcher has won seven consecutive district championships at North, 22 in a row overall and 24 in 27 seasons over the course of his career. There’s little reason to believe those streaks won’t continue, especially given that senior post player and Villanova-signee Kavunaa Edwards is one of the area’s best players right now. That brings us to the other bracket, where second-seeded Northland could be the team that eventually crashes the OCC-Ohio postseason party. Despite Northland’s 60-52 loss to Africentric in the City League championship game Feb. 12, there’s a lot to like about the Vikings, who finished 18-1 in the regular season. They have a group of proven scorers, veteran leadership and enough size on the baseline to thwart the challengers in their bracket, seventh-seeded Gahanna included. If the seedings hold, we’ll see Gahanna and eighth-seeded Newark clash in a district semifinal. Pay attention to that one because the future of the OCC-Ohio will be on display. Gahanna’s four sophomores, including point guard Quiera Lampkins, are playing key roles for the Lions, who might be 0-4 against Reynoldsburg and Pickerington North, but they are a combined 14-2 against everyone else. On the other bench, Newark has been rejuvenated by a bevy of promising underclassmen, including sophomore post player Paige Cashin and freshman shooting guard Maggie Mitchell. Newark also is 14-2

Henderson wants record in 50 free By AARON BLANKENSHIP ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Just like everyone else competing for the Gahanna Lincoln High School boys swimming and diving team in the Division I district meet on Friday, Feb. 18, and Saturday, Feb. 19, at Ohio State, senior Justin Henderson is hoping to perform well enough to advance to state. At district, the top three placers in each boys and girls swimming event and top four divers automatically qualify for the state meet Feb. 24-26 at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. In addition, 11 at-large berths for each swimming event will be awarded based on times statewide. However, Henderson said his top priority for district is to break Brent Shear-
er’s program record of 21.5 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. “I just want to get the school record in the 50 free, and I’ll need to drop a lot of time to get it. But if I swim my best, I think I’ll have a chance,” Henderson said. “I’m more worried about my time than my place at this meet. But if I do get the record, I’ll have a great shot at making it to state, which would be a nice bonus.” Henderson tied Pickerington Central’s Paul Hintz for fourth in the 50 free (22.56) in the sectional on Feb. 12 at Thomas Worthington and is seeded fifth in the event for district. Last year, Henderson finished 19th (22.88) in the 50 free at district. “I didn’t shave or taper for sectional,” Henderson said. “But I’m going to do those things this week, so I should be
fresh for district, and I’m hoping that, along with the competition, will help me drop a lot of time. This could be my last meet, so I’m going to give it my best shot.” The boys team scored 73 points in the 12-team sectional to finish eighth behind champion New Albany (238.5). “Everybody had an amazing meet and set personal records in most of their events,” junior Beau Snoad said. “We’re all tapering for district, so our goal is to drop even more time there.” The girls team scored 61 points to finish ninth in the 14-team sectional behind champion Thomas Worthington (194). Freshman Morgan Belli won the 200 individual medley (2:10.87) ahead of See SWIMMING, page C3

Wrestling
Strong foes await Lions at sectional meet By JARROD ULREY ThisWeek Community Newspapers
By Laurie Stevenson/ThisWeek
The Gahanna Lincoln High School wrestling team should learn this weekend whether a regular season filled with adversity might produce some dividends. At their home duals Jan. 22, the Lions lost 2010 Division I state qualifier Nick Brown (189 pounds) to a season-ending knee injury. The four-year starter played a key leadership role a year ago when Gahanna shared the OCC-Ohio Division championship with Pickerington North. Despite losing to Lancaster 47-17 on Jan. 6, the Lions remained in the conference-title race until losing to North 36-31 on Feb. 10 to finish 5-2 in the OCC-Ohio, one win behind cochampions Lancaster and Pickerington Central. Gahanna only can hope for a better fate when it competes Saturday, Feb. 19, at the sectional at Pickerington North. “We definitely miss Nick after

said Coffman assistant coach Scott Adamick, who filled in as head coach for Perry Pooley, who was coaching his son’s youth club hockey team in a tournament in Montreal. “We played well and had our chances. Look at the number of power plays we had that we didn’t capitalize on, especially with the two-man advantage. It’s do-ordie in those situations and when you don’t score on power plays, most of the time it comes back to bite you. But give credit to their goaltender, because he played phenomenal.” The Patriots tied the game at 2 less than three minutes after O’Brien’s goal when Koehler fired a shot off goaltender Nathan Schuman’s pads and Kyle Horner knocked the loose puck into an open portion of the net. With only 28.4 seconds left, Schuman saved a shot by Christopher Bergamesca only to have Jimmy Ruska poke the puck through the goaltender’s legs for the winning goal. “I went to the net hard, like we’re taught to do, and when I saw the puck sitting there in the crease, my eyes got huge like dinner plates, and all I had to do was tap it in,” Ruska said. To reach the final, Coffman upset top-seeded Jerome as Putnam and O’Brien scored and Schuman had 27 saves. “Our guys were pumped to play that game, because Jerome is our rival and they were the No. 1 seed,” Adamick said. “That was a more up-tempo game and it was almost more emotional and energetic than the Liberty game because both teams wanted it so badly.” •DISTRICT INFO — Despite its erratic play during the regular season, Gahanna received a favorable draw for the district tournament. combined to take 12 of the past 15 regional berths, with Dublin Coffman standing as the lone exception as it won district titles from 2007-09. Current members of the OCC-Ohio also swept the district championships in 2006 when Pickerington North, Gahanna and Pickerington Central won their respective brackets. Central captured the first of four consecutive district titles that season, and a stable of young guards coming up through its program tells me a similar run could be forthcoming. I don’t see that happening this year, but the route to Otterbein will run through the OCCOhio nonetheless.
when losses to North and Reynoldsburg are subtracted from the equation. That isn’t to say Reynoldsburg is going anywhere anytime soon, either. The Raiders start only one senior, and the rapid development of sophomores such as Destini Cooper and Alyssa Rice gives Reynoldsburg plenty of staying power. “It’s great to be young and good,” Newark coach J.R. Shumate said recently. “(Raiders coach) Jack (Purtell) has got it figured out.” In fact, the overall youth I see in the OCCOhio tells me that the league will continue to be showcased at the local regional for years to come. There’s history to consider, too. Under the cur- kadams@thisweeknews.com rent alignment, teams from the OCC-Ohio have www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com

We’ve all got our heads in the right place.” Bergenstein should be one of Gahanna’s top candidates to advance to district. Last season, the Lions had six district qualifiers and finished third (170) at the 13-team sectional at Watkins Memorial, behind Marysville (239) and Teays Valley (205.5). Seeded ninth, Gahanna is competing at the same sectional as top-seeded Olentangy Liberty, No. 3 Teays Valley, No. 8 Dublin Coffman and No. 10 Pickerington Central. A year ago, Drew McDougle (130), Kasee McDougle (135) and Justin Strohschein (152) were district qualifiers and Connor Noel (160), Dorian Arnold (119) and Josiah Dembroski (140) were sectional placers. Also with winning records after the loss to North were Arnold (2114), Bergenstein (21-10), Noel (14-13) and Strohschein (24-11). “The McDougles and Justin Strohschein have been pretty consistent all year,” coach Kyle Bentley said. “It would be nice to see (Strohschein) make it through to district again. All of his losses have been really close. Evan Bergenstein has wrestled really well at times and also really bad at times, but with those two sophomores and those two seniors, we could possibly get four guys to state depending on how things come together for them. lost to Cuyahoga Falls 34-31, but neither Drew McDougle nor Kasee McDougle competed. That same day, Gahanna watched the Golden Flashes beat Ohio University 30-6 in a MidAmerican Conference match. Kent State went on to clinch a share of the MAC regular-season title two days later. The experience in Kent might have come at an opportune time, considering the Lions lost to North the night before. “I think there were a couple matches that should have been won by our kids (against North),” Bergenstein said. “It was good to get up (to Kent State) and go to a college and watch a Division I match between two rivals.” julrey@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com

Surgery an option for sinus problems Frequent sinus infections in children are a common problem, especially for children in daycare settings. The average child can have six to 10 upper respiratory tract infections a year that have symptoms including nasal discharge and blockage. Other factors that contribute to frequent sinus infections are environmental allergies, exposure to second-hand smoke, immunodeficiency, congenital craniofacial anomalies and some inherited conditions. Children with lung problems such as asthma and cystic fibrosis often have related sinus problems. Most viral infections will resolve without treatment. A small percentage will progress to bacterial sinusitis that will require antibiotics for treatment. Narrowing or blockage of the nasal passages or sinus openings may increase the chances that a cold will progress to bacterial sinusitis. Often, children may need medication to help treat sinus problems. This could include nasal steroids, nasal saline, mucousthinning medications called mu-
colytics and some allergy medications such as antihistamines. In a small percentage of children, surCHARLES gery may be to ELMARAGHY necessary relieve the blockage and open the sinuses or nasal passages. Prior to any surgery, a thorough work-up is necessary in order to determine the appropriate treatment course. Younger children do not typically need surgery on the sinuses as their sinuses are still developing. Younger children with frequent sinus infections often have their adenoid, a patch of tissue located where the nose and throat join, removed. The adenoid can be a haven for bacteria and can often block the nasal passages. Removing the adenoid is a simple and painless surgery that can be very effective. When the sinus problem is more involved than an enlarged adenoid, the sinuses need to be imaged via a special X-ray called
a CT scan. A CT scan is the best way to investigate the anatomy of the sinuses and determine if the openings of the sinuses are blocked. If sinus openings are blocked, they can be enlarged using special instruments and a small camera called an endoscope. This is called endoscopic sinus surgery. Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Rhinology Clinic is unique in that it offers allergy testing and endoscopic evaluation during the same visit. This allows both the allergist and otolaryngologist to determine an appropriate treatment plan. You should always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health care provider prior to starting or stopping any treatment or with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. Dr. Charles Elmaraghy is a member of the Department of Otolaryngology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and an assistant professor of clinical otolaryngology at the Ohio State University College of Medicine.

OUT ON THE STREET We sometimes grow so accustomed to the noise around us that we tend not to realize just how insidious it actually is. Such may be the case with the street noise that we have become so accustomed to hearing in our cities. Traffic noise, sirens, and crowd noise may pose a bigger threat to hearing than we might think. For instance, when researchers recently measured the nose in 60 spots around New York City, they found that 98 percent of their measurements exceeded 70 decibels. This level can cause irreversible hearing damage over time. While not all of us live in such noisy environments, this study makes a good case for wearing earplugs for those who do. Our noisy world offers no guarantees that we’ll have perfect hearing throughout our lives. We must accept the responsibility of protecting our hearing, in our home and work environments and our recreational pursuits, and do all we can to correct impairments. If you don’t hear as well as you feel you should, don’t wait until you feel left out. Have your hearing checked. Here at ABSOLUTE HEARING SOLUTIONS, helping you achieve your optimum hearing potential is our only business. We’re located at 1000 Morrison Road, Suite H, Gahanna. Call us at 614-654-4309 to arrange a hearing test.
We handle Starkey, Phonak, Siemens, Unitron, MicroTech, GN ReSound, Rexton, Oticon, and Widex. Plus, we have the same products as NU-Ear, Audibel, AudioSync, and Miracle Ear, but you will save $1,000’s with us!
