District expects $17.5M OSFC offer By TARA STUBBS-FIGURSKI ThisWeek Community Newspaper The Canal Winchester Board of Education could receive an offer from the Ohio School Facilities Commission as early as spring, according to district treasurer Joyce Boyer. The OSFC is expected to offer the district approximately $17,553,000 to be used to upgrade existing facilities or build new ones. Superintendent Kimberley Miller-Smith told school board
members at a Feb. 5 retreat that district officials now have to decide whether and how to proceed. “The question we need to think about is if we want to be able to collect on that money,” she said. “It’s owed to the community. We have to look at and do some calculating to find out if (the plan) would increase operating costs and if it’s a smart move to make.” The local district would have to come up with some matching money if it chooses to accept the OSFC funds. Boyer
said the district would need to request the money through a bond issue rather than an operating levy. Miller-Smith said district officials have looked at seven different options for using the state funding. These included everything from adding on to existing buildings to building new ones, she said. “We are down to the place where we have one option that we could afford and be able to do without needing more from voters other than an additional half-mill,”
she said. Miller-Smith said that option would create additional space at the middle school so it would house sixth through eighth grades. It also includes an eventual addition to the high school and construction of pre-kindergarten/ kindergarten facility. “At this point in time, that is our only option,” she said. Adding on to the middle school would cost $6,718,633, she said, while renovating and adding 49,898 square feet to
the high school would cost $21,824,121. Building a new elementary school for pre-kindergarten/kindergarten would cost $10,157,186. Board members need to decide whether to accept the OSFC money now or wait for future funding that may or may not be available, Miller-Smith said. She said the reason she announced the possible OSFC funding at the special meeting was to give board members See DISTRICT, page A2

The Canal Winchester Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved a zoning amendment Monday, Feb. 14, that would revise the village’s dog kennel policy to allow doggrooming businesses to be located closer to residential areas. The amendment will be forwarded to Canal Winchester Village Council for a vote. Village officials said in January that Canal Winchester’s code only provides parameters for dog kennels, which can be located as a conditional use in a commercially zoned area or in limited manufacturing areas. The amendment “breaks out animal grooming and training from commercial kennels, so it’s separate,” zoning officer Andrew Dutton said. “It makes it a conditional use in a general commercial zoning district.” Commission member Jim Knowlton asked if there were any restrictions on training in regard See ZONING CHANGE, page A2
District emphasizes levy is Hope UMC renewal, not replacement Clothing ministry now By CHRIS BOURNEA ThisWeek Contributor At its monthly meeting Monday night, the Canal Winchester Board of Education approved a resolution to approve the collection of taxes for the current fiscal year, which began July 1, 2010. The resolution is a routine piece of business that the district must submit to the county auditor’s office every year to continue collecting on the current two-year, $6.4-million emergency levy that voters approved in May 2009, treasurer Joyce Boyer said.
Superintendent Kimberley Miller-Smith said wording in the A closer look resolution stating that a rate of 5 mills is attached to the levy is simply a formality. Interfaith program turns to scripture for understanding By TARA STUBBS-FIGURSKI ThisWeek Community Newspapers Local representatives of the Muslim, Christian and Jewish faiths are hoping to promote understanding through an examination of holy texts. The program “How Do We Understand Our Scriptures” is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 21 at St. John Lutheran Church, 133 W. South St., Lithopolis. It is sponsored by the Canal Winchester-Lithopolis Ministerial Association, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and
the Columbus Jewish Federation. “The purpose of the meeting is that we should know each other,” said Mirza Ahmad, communications secretary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. The program will look at scripture in the Koran, the Bible and the Tanakh, a name used in Judaism for the canon of the Hebrew Bible. The word is an acronym based on the letters T (for “Torah”), N (for “Nevi’im,” the prophets) and K (for “Ketuvim,” the sacred writings.) Rabbi Idit Jacques of the Columbus

Jewish Federation will address the importance of scripture for the Jewish community. She said the federation was approached by the ministerial association about speaking at the event. “They have been working with Mirza, who has approached me to have speakers come speak at his mosque,” she said. “Other rabbis in the synagogue have gone to speak in his mosque. We were very interested when they approached me about having this.” The scripture program provides a platform to discuss different texts in the
Muslim, Jewish and Christian beliefs and is a great way to build understanding of each other and generate some vocabulary to communicate with one another, Jacques said. Jacques said she was asked to make her presentation based on texts she considers to be sacred or have some significance in her religion. The program allows her an opportunity to explain Jewish scripture, what she considers sacred about Jewish scripture and the role scripture plays in life, she said. Ahmad said he hopes to dispel mis-

conceptions about Muslims and to explain that the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community “does not believe in violence, terrorism and killing of the non-Muslims.” St. John Lutheran Church Pastor Joe Wolf said Ahmad visited his church last fall, shortly before Florida pastor Terry Jones had planned to burn a copy of the Koran as a protest against plans to build a mosque near Ground Zero in New York. Jones later called off his protest. See INTERFAITH, page A2

DISTRICT Continued from page A1 some time to digest the information. “We have a lot of thinking to do and a lot of decisions to make,” she said. “We have a year’s worth of conversation still. I don’t want the residents to think we will build a building in two years.” The district’s original master plan called for two new buildings — a fifth/sixth grade building and a pre-kindergarten/kindergarten building, but that would result in large amounts of space in three buildings, she said. “We cannot do that plan now because enrollment has not kept pace,” Miller-Smith said.
See this Month’s Movie Reviews at With the updated plan, the number of personnel in each building would stay the same but utility costs would increase, she said. The district will be given a construction timeline by the OSFC, Miller-Smith said. The very earliest the district would go on the ballot with a bond issue would be November 2011. In May, voters will be asked to approve a 14.78-mill, three-year emergency levy for Canal Winchester schools. While enrollment has remained relatively flat the last few years, research by a company the OSFC hired to do enrollment projections shows the school district
will grow again, thus necessitating the additional space. Boyer said as smaller classes graduate, there are larger classes moving up through the grade levels, creating the need for additional space. But nothing is set in stone, Miller-Smith said, until improvements outlined in the school district’s master plan are completely finished. District officials will continue to meet with OSFC representatives, she said. “It is quite a process,” she said. “It will be an ongoing thing until every last building is built and every project is complete.”
“Mirza found his way into our church,” Wolf said. “When we were ending worship, he started a conversation and asked what I thought about (Jones’ plan). I thought it was despicable.” Ahmad said he reached out to some of the churches in the Lithopolis area when Jones’plans were made public.

“The Holy Koran is going to burn and we don’t like it,” he told people. “If a Muslim does the same thing, that is not good. We are a peaceful, peaceful community. We want your support in this area. We are all from God.” Ahmad suggested an interfaith dialogue and Wolf agreed. On Sept. 11, there was a joint program with the Muslim community and the ministerial association.

Continued from page A1 to housing. Dutton said the only restriction is the grooming facility must be located at least 200 feet from a residential zoning district. Knowlton asked if a trainer who decided to take a dog to his house to be socialized would be in violation of the zoning regulations. Dutton said that would be pretty hard to enforce. Commission member Jeff Graber was concerned about language in the amendment that stipulates a grooming business must be located 200 feet away from a residential zoning district. He said he didn’t think the restriction was necessary. “Most grooming takes place inside,” he said. The restriction only applies to activity that is taking place outside the business, planning commission member Mike Vasko said. Commission member Dan Konold said he also didn’t have any issue with a grooming business being located less than 200 feet away from a residential zoning district. Graber said his only other concern was a lack of language requiring owners to clean up their designated areas where animals relieve themselves. He suggested adding such language in case it becomes an issue. “Would we ever have to enforce it? Probably not,” he said. Vasko suggested removing language requiring a grooming business to be 200 feet away from a residential zoning district but adding language requiring that the business owner clean up after their animals. Dutton asked commission members if animal training should be located 200 feet away from a residential zoning district. Commission member Jennifer Solomon said she didn’t have an issue with locating a training business next to a residential area as long as the trainer was only walking one animal at a time. “Generally, you make no money as a trainer if you are dealing with one animal at a time,” Knowlton said. Konold said training facilities should be located 200 feet away from residential areas. Graber said the zoning amendment could stipulate that any outdoor training class needs to be located 200 feet away from a residential zoning district. “That is fine,” he said. “I’m OK with that.”

Columbus’ rivers did not provide a useful waterway With the opening of the Scioto Mile, the Scioto River will once again be an attraction that will draw people both to downtown and the city as a whole. The water was clear and clean and had been drawing people to its banks for several thousand years. Native Americans lived here for centuries and built large Indian mounds nearby. Mound Street is named for one of them. Thousands of deer came down to the
river to drink in molting season and covered the water in a blanket of shedding deer fur. With a wry directness, Native American gave the stream a new name — “Hairy River.” But the profitable river trade the pioneers expected to undertake with huge cargo laden flatboats was not to be. Continued from page A4 narrow in many places and the current too treacherous. Only at a few times of year was the water high enough to carry the great flatboats. And at that time the current was so swift that many boats were lost. The pioneer settlements of central Ohio were rather isolated for a number of years. Until the canal came. Canals are not a new idea. One can find them at any number of places in the ancient world where people needed an artificial waterway for one reason or another. But canals are expensive to build and costly to maintain. For that reason they are often built by governments and not by private enterprise. As the land across the Appalachian Mountains began to be settled after the American Revolution, men like Henry Clay began to argue that government should finance “internal improvements” like roads, canals and river work to “open the West” to commerce. And all of this should be financed by the federal government. Of course many people in the East were not thrilled with the idea that their taxes should subsidize public works that would help the Ohio River valley compete with their own commerce. So canals were more a dream than a reality for a number of years. Then the extraordinary success of the Erie Canal linking the East to the Great Lakes captured the imagination of the country in the years after the War of 1812. Soon many Ohioans were talking about canals and building one in the state. But talk was really the only result. Like many other times in the state’s history, forceful leadership was needed to bring canals to Ohio. In this case, that leadership was provided by Ethan Allen Brown. As early as 1816, Brown, a Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, had written to Governor DeWitt Clinton of New York seeking information about the canal system of that state. When Brown was elected governor in 1818, he proposed building a canal and continued to press for its construction. In the end the Ohio General Assembly agreed and studies were made as to possible locations. Two major canal systems — the Miami and Erie in the west and the Ohio and Erie in the east — were built with the support and supervision of a number of people

as committed to the project as Gov. Brown had been. Important among them was Alfred Kelley. Kelley had come to Columbus in 1816 to represent Cleveland in the assembly. He served for the next several decades, eventually representing Columbus as well. As a member of the Canal Commission he personally supervised the construction of much of the canal. When the economic depression of the 1830s threatened Ohio’s ability to pay interest due on its canal bonds, Kelley would pledge his own Columbus home as collateral to ensure payment on the bonds. Through the efforts of Kelley and many others, Columbus was linked to the main line of the Ohio and Erie Canal by a Feeder Canal that entered the city near the place where Bicentennial Park is today. In 1860, a state arsenal — now the Cultural Arts Center — would be built next to the canal to permit easy movement of arms and ordnance in and out of the capital city. The canal and the recently arrived National Road transformed Columbus. As late as 1832, Columbus was a frontier village of a few thousand people. By 1834, Columbus was a city of five thousand people. Large numbers of travelers and immense quantities of freight arrived by both road and water and more than a few Columbus residents made their fortune in the new crossroads capital city. The canal and its people captured the imagination of the city. Longtime resident Emily Stewart later remembered, “The first canal boats seemed like fairy palaces. They were paint-
ed white and the windows had green shutters and scarlet curtains. The inside panels of the cabins contained pictures and mirrors. The officers of the passenger boats were gentlemen. The cabin was a dining and sitting room in the daytime, but was converted into a sleeping apartment at night. There were staterooms at each end for the ladies, whose comfort was further promoted by the attentions of a polite and diligent stewardess. For years after the canal was opened, the boats always came in with a band of music playing on board. The captain of the boat usually played the clarinet for the entertainment of the passengers…” But all of this growth and success came with a price. The riverfront between the Main Street Canal Basin and the Broad Street Bridge came to be filled with docks for canal boats and canal warehouses soon lined the waterfront. Factories, inexpensive housing and even less attractive taverns and other amusements soon followed. The river, once clear and pristine, soon became little more than an open sewer and a place few people willingly visited for leisurely recreation. The golden age of the Ohio and Erie Canal lasted for less than 30 years. By 1850, the first railroad had arrived in Columbus and within a few years, the canal began a long, slow decline. An attempt to revive the canal around the turn of the century was unsuccessful as well. Ed Lentz writes a history column for ThisWeek.
Frequent sinus infections in children are a common problem, especially for children in daycare settings. The average child can have six to 10 upper respiratory tract infections a year that have symptoms including nasal discharge and blockage. Other factors that contribute to frequent sinus infections are environmental allergies, exposure to second-hand smoke, immunodeficiency, congenital craniofacial anomalies and some inherited conditions. Children with lung problems such as asthma and cystic fibrosis often have related sinus problems. Most viral infections will resolve without treatment. A small percentage will progress to bacterial sinusitis that will require antibiotics for treatment. Narrowing or blockage of the nasal passages or sinus openings may increase the chances that a cold will progress to bacterial sinusitis. Often, children may need medication to help treat sinus problems. This could include nasal steroids, nasal saline, mucous-thinning medications called mucolytics and some allergy medications such as anti-histamines. In a small percentage of children, surgery may be necessary to relieve the blockage and open the sinuses or nasal passages. Prior to any surgery, a thorough work-up is necessary in order to determine the appropriate treatment course. Younger children do not typically need surgery on the sinuses as their sinuses are still developing. Younger children with frequent sinus infections often have their adenoid, a patch of tissue located where the nose and throat join, re-
P L
moved. The adenoid can be a haven for bacteria and can often block the nasal passages. Removing the adenoid is a simple and painless surgery that can be very effective. When the sinus problem CHARLES is more involved than an enELMARAGHY larged adenoid, the sinuses need to be imaged via a special X-ray called a CT scan. A CT scan is the best way to investigate the anatomy of the sinuses and determine if the openings of the sinuses are blocked. If sinus openings are blocked, they can be enlarged using special instruments and a small camera called an endoscope. This is called endoscopic sinus surgery. Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Rhinology Clinic is unique in that it offers allergy testing and endoscopic evaluation during the same visit. This allows both the allergist and otolaryngologist to determine an appropriate treatment plan. You should always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health care provider prior to starting or stopping any treatment or with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. Dr. Charles Elmaraghy is a member of the Department of Otolaryngology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and an assistant professor of clinical otolaryngology at the Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Tax Series Workers urged to check eligibility for EITC WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service and partners nationwide mark the 5th Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day on Jan. 28. This initiative highlights the availability of one of the federal government’s largest benefit programs for working families and individuals. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 created a new category of families with three or more children and increased the maximum benefit of EITC for tax years 2009 and 2010. The Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2010 extended these changes through 2012. The maximum credit for 2010 tax returns is $5,666 for workers with three or more qualifying children. However, workers without qualifying children may also be eligible for a smaller credit amount. “Millions of workers who did not earn high incomes claimed the EITC last year,” said Doug Shulman, IRS commissioner. “The IRS encourages all eligible taxpayers to claim this valuable credit. Together with our partners, we can help taxpayers file their returns and get the EITC.” Workers who earned $48,362 or less from wages, self-employment or farm income last year could receive larger refunds if they qualify for the EITC. Four out of five eligible taxpayers claimed the EITC last year obtaining an extra $2,200 from the credit on average. This represents a critical financial boost to over 26 million workers who earn low to moderate incomes. Eligibility for the EITC is determined based on a number of factors including earnings, filing status and eligible children. Many people who experienced a change in these factors will qualify for the first time this year and may not be aware of the credit. Taxpayers must file a tax return, even if they do not have a filing requirement, and specifically claim the credit. Those who typically fail to claim the EITC include rural workers and their families; non-traditional families, such as grandparents or foster parents raising children; taxpayers without qualifying children; individuals with limited English proficiency; Native Americans; and taxpayers with disabilities. It is easy to verify eligibility for EITC by going to www.irs.gov and typing “EITC” into the search box. There is an online EITC Assistant, which can help taxpayers determine eligibility by answering a few simple questions More information and the details of eligibility rules are available at www.irs.gov/eitc. Also, find several ways to file a tax return to claim the EITC for free. For more information,Visit IRS.gov

Continued from page A1 unable to make the trek to the basement, organizers will carry items upstairs for them. “It can be crowded at 10 a.m. if everyone comes at 10 a.m.,” Lloyd said. “They all end up finding things for each other, too.” Lloyd said about 15 to 17 families visit per month. While many are from the Canal Winchester and Groveport area, there is a steady stream of customers from other locations, including Pataskala and Baltimore, she said. With the downturn in the economy, she said the clothing bank has seen an increase in customers. Flyers about the ministry are also passed out at Canal Winchester’s food bank. “We are seeing an uptake from people spreading the word,” Lloyd said. Donations of clothes in sizes newborn through five are accepted, but she said there is always a shortage of girls’ clothing in sizes 2T to 5T. The clothes are given away free from 10 a.m. to noon the fourth Saturday of the month at the church, 83 E. Columbus St. “We see a lot of the same people come in every couple of months,” she said. “They use it as a great recycling tool. They bring in clothes that their children have outgrown and take out other things.” Lloyd said she recently heard one mother explain to a shopper she doesn’t buy brand new clothes for her children any more — when they outgrow the new items purchased by their grandparents, she swaps them for larger sizes from the church’s clothing ministry. There are no requirements for qualifying for assistance, Lloyd said. “Anyone is welcome,” she said. “We don’t turn anyone away.” The offers for help keep coming in, too, Lloyd said. In January, volunteers got a call from a Canal Winchester resident who was interested in donating hand-crocheted or knitted items and flannel blankets to the ministry. “When she sees flannel on sale, she grabs some and makes blankets and what not,” Lloyd

said. “She called and said ‘Could you use these things?’ We can always use them.” And sometimes, she said, the volunteers experience things that convince them the clothing ministry exists for a purpose. A week before Christmas, on the third Saturday of December, a woman called to inquire if the clothing bank was still open. She was coming from the West Side of Columbus and was having trouble finding the church. The Columbus resident knew of a family with two girls and a boy who had lost everything in a house fire and was looking for donations to help the family, Lloyd said. While the woman was in the store, a visitor stopped by with some items and asked if the church would take some toys he and his wife wanted to donate. He had daughters who wore sizes 4 and 7, the same sizes as the children in the family who lost their home in the fire. “They had an Ariel makeup table that talked to you and sang songs,” Lloyd said. “We just started going through the bags. We found Christmas jammies, matching Christmas outfits. It was unbelievable. It just gave us chills. We were so thrilled it all happened at the right time.” With spring around the corner, organizers are hoping to start collecting spring donations. To get ready for the new season, the clothing bank will be closed the fourth Saturday in March so volunteers can rotate the stock. The last chance for patrons to pick out winter clothing, including coats, hats and gloves, will be from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 26, Lloyd said. Volunteer Linda Werner, who became a member of the Hope United Methodist congregation a year ago, said she was inspired to visit the church because of the clothing ministry. “I always saw the signs out front that said they were giving away children’s clothing,” she said. “I always thought it must be a very nice church. That is what drew me to the church. I just like helping people.” tstubbs@thisweeknews.com

Canal Winchester High School wrestling coach Trent Brooks was disappointed but not flustered after his team lost to Amanda-Clearcreek 38-30 in an MSL-Buckeye Division dual match Feb. 10 at home to lose its shot at winning the league title outright. Instead of letting frustration get the better of them, the Indians bounced back to beat Teays Valley 37-30 later that night and defeat Fairfield Union 52-21 on Feb. 12 in their last two MSLBuckeye duals to clinch a share of their first league title. Canal Winchester and Circleville finished tied atop the MSL-Buckeye at 6-1. “Our kids were so amped up to wrestle Teays Valley that they probably looked past AmandaClearcreek, but we didn’t match up well with Amanda-Clearcreek anyway, so I knew it was going to be tough to beat them,” Brooks said. “After that match, I told the kids that we still had a second chance at winning our league, because Teays Valley was the only team without a loss, and our kids responded by winning eight matches against a tough Teays Valley team.” Brooks is optimistic that his

OCC-Ohio could dominate district tourney again I don’t see it happening this year, but it certainly would be no big surprise if all three Division I girls basketball district-champion trophies awarded March 5 at Olentangy Liberty High School go to members of the OCC-Ohio Division. That was the case a year ago when Reynoldsburg, Pickerington North and Gahanna emerged from their respective brackets to turn the regional at Otterbein into a de facto OCC-Ohio postseason tournament. The Raiders won it in classic March Madness style, too, stunning North 45-34 in the final as coach Dave Butcher lost to a Reynoldsburg team for the first time in his career. Now, the top-seeded Raiders are looking like a virtual lock in their bracket. They swept North during the regular season to capture their first OCCOhio title and show that last year’s
upset was no fluke. Moreover, nobody from central Ohio has beaten them yet. North, meanwhile, is seeded fifth and is the second-lowest seeded team in its bracket behind thirdKURTIS seeded Olentangy ADAMS Orange, which I think might be in over its head should the Pioneers advance to meet the Panthers in the final as the seedings indicate. Butcher has won seven consecutive district championships at North, 22 in a row overall and 24 in 27 seasons over the course of his career. There’s little reason to believe those streaks won’t continue, especially given that senior post player and Villanova-signee Kavunaa Edwards is one of the area’s best players
right now. That brings us to the other bracket, where second-seeded Northland could be the team that eventually crashes the OCC-Ohio postseason party. Despite Northland’s 60-52 loss to Africentric in the City League championship game Feb. 12, there’s a lot to like about the Vikings, who finished 18-1 in the regular season. They have a group of proven scorers, veteran leadership and enough size on the baseline to thwart the challengers in their bracket, seventh-seeded Gahanna included. If the seedings hold, we’ll see Gahanna and eighth-seeded Newark clash in a district semifinal. Pay attention to that one because the future of the OCCOhio will be on display. Gahanna’s four sophomores, including point guard Quiera Lampkins, are playing key roles for the Lions, who might be 0-4 against Reynoldsburg and Pickerington North,
but they are a combined 14-2 against everyone else. On the other bench, Newark has been rejuvenated by a bevy of promising underclassmen, including sophomore post player Paige Cashin and freshman shooting guard Maggie Mitchell. Newark also is 14-2 when losses to North and Reynoldsburg are subtracted from the equation. That isn’t to say Reynoldsburg is going anywhere anytime soon, either. The Raiders start only one senior, and the rapid development of sophomores such as Destini Cooper and Alyssa Rice gives Reynoldsburg plenty of staying power. “It’s great to be young and good,” Newark coach J.R. Shumate said recently. “(Raiders coach) Jack (Purtell) has got it figured out.” In fact, the overall youth I see in the OCC-Ohio tells me that the league will continue to be showcased at the local
regional for years to come. There’s history to consider, too. Under the current alignment, teams from the OCC-Ohio have combined to take 12 of the past 15 regional berths, with Dublin Coffman standing as the lone exception as it won district titles from 2007-09. Current members of the OCC-Ohio also swept the district championships in 2006 when Pickerington North, Gahanna and Pickerington Central won their respective brackets. Central captured the first of four consecutive district titles that season, and a stable of young guards coming up through its program tells me a similar run could be forthcoming. I don’t see that happening this year, but the route to Otterbein will run through the OCC-Ohio nonetheless. kadams@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com

Commentary
Africentric’s winning culture embraced by players In a relatively short amount of time, Africentric has built a winning tradition in girls basketball. In its eight years of existence, Africentric has won two state championships and five City League titles under coach Will McKinney. The Nubians’ fifth City championship came Feb. 12 in a 60-52 victory over previously unbeaten Northland before a large and enthusiastic crowd at Mifflin. Africentric’s senior star, Raven Ferguson, led the way with 22 points, nine rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals. It was her fourth consecutive City championship game and her third victory. “This one really means a lot to me because we ran the City League for a
while, but we didn’t get it done last year (against Brookhaven) and that was hard,” she said. “At Africentric we have a tradition of winning, so bringing the trophy back to our school LARRY after missing it a year LARSON ago is great and, since this is my senior year, it makes it even better.” Talking about her team’s performance against Northland, Ferguson said, “Beating a great team like Northland meant we had to compete hard on every play of the game and every second of the game up and down the court. We
wanted to be the team who could say that we beat an unbeaten Division I team. We wanted to be the team who could say that Northland is now 18-1 and we are the one, and it truly took a full team effort to do it. “Every player on our team stepped up this week. Players that didn’t see action in the game worked so hard in practice to get us ready. Everyone has a role on this team and as long as we are all working toward the same goal we will be just fine. I know that experience means a lot and we have been in so many big games and in tough situations in those big games, and I think that helped us a lot against Northland. I feel like I have played in that atmosphere all four years that I have been at Africentric.
“This team is very special because it has lots of talented girls who can compete at a high level. Earlier in the year the younger players were trying to learn about high school basketball and us five seniors had to teach them how to play Africentric basketball and how to play hard and play under pressure. Since this is our last chance, we as seniors want to win so bad and we push each other and we push our teammates, but as the year has worn on, the younger players have grown and now they are pushing us. There are no slackers on this team.” Looking ahead to the postseason, which begins Tuesday, Feb. 22, for Africentric, Ferguson said, “The City League title is a wonderful boost for us going into the district tournament
because once you win a championship, all of us want the next title even more and there are three more we can win. We have the district, regional and state tournaments ahead and, of course, we have coach McKinney leading the way. He is a great coach and a father figure for all of us. He is just not a coach, he teaches us about life. I love the family feeling at Africentric and always have loved it. We are all in this together.” Look out Division III. I’ll see you at a game. cause not too many people in the state have done that before.” Hutchins is Canal Winchester’s lone returning sectional champion. “It’s important to try to win sectional, because that makes you a top seed and means you don’t have to wrestle the tougher guys until later in the district tournament,” Hutchins said. “I feel good about the way we’re wrestling. Our whole team is wrestling better at the end of the year at a time where most teams are going downhill.”
