Taste of Grove City & Business Expo shows off the area’s finest businesses More than 100 local business and food participants to be showcased to the community Many of the Grove City Area’s best restaurants and businesses will be on display March 13 as the Taste of Grove City & Business Expo returns for the fifth consecutive year. It will be held at the South-Western Career Academy, located at 4750 Big Run South Rd., from 5 to 8 p.m. This unique event, presented by the Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce, features some of Grove City’s most popular restaurants and prominent businesses. Exhibitors will be giving out samples of their foods, products and services,

as well as promotional materials and giveaways throughout the event. The Taste of Grove City will exhibit a wide variety of restaurants from the area, allowing attendees the opportunity to try many different local cuisines. There will be approximately 20 participating restaurants, including catering businesses, barbecues and bakeries. Patrons will vote on their choices for Best Pizza and Best Restaurant, allowing attendees to pick their favorites. This year, the Business Expo will

feature more than 80 exhibitors from a broad range of businesses. In the past, businesses have participated from diverse industries such as banking, photography, entertainment, legal services, hair care and many more. The event is open to the public with a $5 admission fee, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the Grove City Food Pantry. Health care reform update: exchanges As an employer, you’ve heard a lot about health care reform. You probably have questions about what it means for you and your employees. To help answer your questions, we’re providing a series of articles in the coming months. Each article will discuss the latest in health care reform and highlight steps you may need to take to comply with the law. Health insurance exchanges: One of the biggest changes is the introduction of health insurance exchanges. They will be run by the state or federal government. Health care companies on the exchange offer their own set of plans that include a basic set of essential health benefits. Small businesses can shop, compare plans side by side and pick the plan that works best for them. Enrollment in exchanges is scheduled to start in October 2013 and coverage should begin in January 2014. If you have questions about the exchange, you will be able to contact an exchange call center and talk with a live person who can answer your questions about your health insurance options. To make buying health care coverage more affordable, you may qualify for a subsidy or tax credit so you pay less for coverage. Contact the exchange call center for more details. Flexible spending account change: Starting on January 1, 2013, employees who have flexible spending accounts (FSAs) must limit their contributions to $2,500 a year. Investing is a marathon: Not a sprint Investors sometimes may get frustrated with their investments because those investments don’t seem to produce quick results. And perhaps that’s understandable in our fast-paced society, in which we’ve grown accustomed to instant gratification. But investing is, by nature, a long-term activity. If you look at it in terms of an athletic event, it’s not a sprint, in which you must pull out all the stops to quickly get where you’re going. Instead, it’s more like the 26.2-mile race known as a marathon. And as an investor, you can learn a few things from marathoners, such as: • Preparation — No one gets up one day and is ready to run a marathon. Marathon runners train for months, and even years. As an investor, you, too, need to prepare yourself for the “long run.” How? By learning as much as you can about different asset classes, types of risk and all the other factors associated with investing. • Patience — Marathoners know they have a long haul in front of them, so they typically create a “game plan” — one that takes into account such factors as their physical condition, the weather on race day, and the characteristics of the course, such as whether it’s hilly or flat. Investors should also create a strategy — one that encompasses their goals and ways of working toward them — and stick to this strategy. • Perseverance — Marathoners may deal with injuries, dehydration and other setbacks, either while training or during the actual race. But as long as they’re able to keep going, they do so. As an investor, you, too, will face obstacles, such as market downturns. But as long as you

continue investing and don’t head to the “sidelines,” you have a good chance of making progress toward your goals. • Vision — Marathoners study the course they’re on, so they know what’s ahead — and where they’re going. As an investor, you also need a vision of what lies in front of you — the number of years until your retirement, the type of retirement lifestyle you anticipate, what sort of legacy you plan to leave, and so on. Your vision will help drive your investment decisions. • Proper coaching — Not all marathoners have individual coaches, but many have at least gone to clinics or joined running clubs so they could learn more about the various aspects of this grueling event. And an investor, you can certainly benefit from guidance or “coaching” in the form of a financial professional — someone who knows your individual needs, goals and risk tolerance and who has the experience to make recommendations that are appropriate for your situation. Every marathoner is familiar with the difficulties of the challenge and the satisfaction of finishing the race. As an investor, you also will be tested many times. Furthermore, you’ll never really cross the “finish line” because you’ll always have goals toward which you’ll be working. Yet, by emulating the traits of successful marathoners, you can continue working toward your objectives — and perhaps you’ll avoid the blisters, too. Warrior Spirit Karate’s Sensei Matthews inducted into Hall of Fame

The Hall of Fame is a shrine for those who have accomplished greatness in their profession. In 2012, Don Matthews, chief instructor and owner of Warrior Spirit Karate, was inducted into the International Karate and Kickboxing Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony took place during the school’s annual awards banquet. Gary Yano, the International Representative of the Hall of Fame presented the award. “It’s been 30 years of hard work and dedication that has paid off,” said Sensei Matthews. “Some of the greatest people in the martial arts have received this award. I am truly honored to follow in their footsteps.” Sensei Matthews started in the martial arts in 1983. He trained in Shito-Ryu, Shotokan, Jujitsu, Aikido, Tang Soo Do and Okinawan Kobudo. He is a competitor in AAU, USA-NFK and Ko Dutemi Seiei Kan organizations, and has been a referee for local, regional and national events. “I have been fortunate to have trained with some of the best in the martial arts world. Some of my past instructors have included Sensei Hideharu Igaki (former National Team coach), Sensei Fumio Demura

(Karate Kid films), Sensei Bill Wallace (World Champion Kickboxer) and the late Sensei Joe Lewis (World Champion Kickboxer),” said Matthews. “Currently, I am training under Sensei Kiyoshi Yamazaki, Chief Instructor for the Japan Karate Ryobu-kai organization.” The International Karate and Kickboxing Hall of Fame began in 1975. Only three or four people are inducted into the hall each year out of the thousands of applicants. Just over 146 Black Belt instructors have earned induction into the hall. Those who have been inducted have lived by the Karate Creed: “I come to you with only Karate, empty hands.” The Hall of Fame is an enshrinement to the many individuals who have attained recognition for their accomplishments in the martial arts. Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris and Ed Parker are among those who have earned this honor. Warrior Spirit Karate has classes in traditional karate, cardio kickboxing, fitness, kettlebell and self-defense.
