Chamber sets February luncheon Today’s students learn and interact with others very differently when compared to their parents. Did you know that today’s second graders are the future graduates of 2020? By that time, these graduates will enter a world that is a far cry from the one that exists even today – a world that will be exponentially more developed, more diverse yet connected, and highly competitive. Advanced technologies already make India and China our
next-door neighbors and these relationships will only become more involved yet transparent. In fact, by 2016, the largest English speaking country in the world will be China. In response to these changes, the Hilliard City School District has embarked on an unprecedented journey of self-assessment, discovery, and future planning. To ensure that our students are properly equipped to successfully compete in a highly competitive global work force,
over 150 staff members and representatives from the community worked collaboratively to research the district’s 2020 improvement initiatives. This critical product will serve as the road map to support our students on this very exciting and rewarding journey. On Feb. 25, please join us for lunch at 11:30 a.m. at the Heritage Golf Club. Superintendent Dale McVey, assistant superintendent Andy Riggle, director
of secondary education Steve Estepp and director of elementary education Jill Menchhofer will be presenting an exciting and informative update on the district’s journey to the year 2020. Reservations are required and need to be made by Tuesday, Feb. 22. Please use the Chamber’s website, www.hilliardchamber.org, to make the reservations for the luncheon.

Chair’s perspective
Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce’s focus: buying local I’ve had a full year as your board to an e-mail treechair and I want to thank the board of warning neighbors of Directors for trusting that I will be the car break-ins, to a right person for another year. I look missing person that forward to serving our members and invoked the power of board in 2011. the web and social I’ve been fortunate enough to live in media to interact with Hilliard for the last 14 years. residents – Hilliard In that time, I’ve seen many local or- HEATHER is a caring, friendly ganizations and businesses come to the KECK and amazing comaid of a family in need. munity. our football teams; sports organizations that reached out to their entire database to help when called upon; and friends and neighbors helping each other by providing meals and babysitting services when someone is in need. These are the values important to teach our children – and I love that we teach them by example. Another great example we can set is to make a conscious effort to buy our goods and services from local businesses.
There are so many benefits: keeping dollars in the local economy allows the businesses to continue to enrich the whole community; the better our local businesses are doing, more local jobs will be available; a vibrant and healthy business community provides character and an economic advantage to the city. And if you’ve looked around lately, you will notice that there is not much you could want or need to buy that you can’t get right here in the Hilliard area!
So before you make that next purchase, think about whether or not Hilliard has a local merchant and shop local. Because, like the slogan says, “It’s all here … in Hilliard!” Keep your eyes open for a new Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce initiative making it easier for you to shop local and save money at the same time. Have a great February! Heather Keck is the chair of Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce.
Group rating enrollment deadline is approaching Group rating still remains to be a very viable alternative rating option that enables employers with better than average claim histories to combine claim expenses and rate calculations in order to take advantage of premium savings currently reserved for large employers by the Ohio Bureau of Workers’Compensation (BWC). By participating in-group rating, your organization can enjoy a much lower premium than could be attained on your own. Historically, groups administered by CompManagement have realized savings between 15 percent and the maximum discount allowed by BWC, which this year stands at 51% after the BWC mandated break-even factor is applied.
Don’t miss your opportunity to continue your workers’ compensation premium discount for 2011. The deadline to enroll is Feb. 25. Enrollment is easy! Return your enrollment invoice along with payment to CompManagement in the envelope provided in your invitation packet or send direct to the following address: CompManagement, Inc. PO Box 182412 Columbus, OH 43218-2412 Should you have any questions regarding group rating or to request a quote directly, please contact CompManagement’s Customer Support Unit at (800) 825-6755, option 3.

Hilliard-based company captures TechColumbus innovation award Alec Cook, chief technology officer for Hilliard-based Vanner, was a winner at the TechColumbus Innovation Awards ceremony Feb. 3 at Battelle Hall in the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Cook and Vanner won in the category of Green Innovation. According to TechColumbus, “Under Mr. Cook’s direction, Vanner has been a leader in patented power conversion and power management technolo-
gies, including battery chargers/monitors, inverters, CANbus accessories, converters, and equalizers for traditional and hybrid powered commercial buses, ambulances, military vehicles, luxury coaches, mobile offices and heavy duty and work trucks. Since 2009, the Vanner Green Initiative has aimed to conserve and recycle in every aspect of day-to-day operation using Vanner power conversion and trans-
formation products.” Vanner’s website said their nomination was for their work with hybrid solutions for the bus and truck industries. Vanner’s Hybrid Beltless Alternator, used on hybrid transit buses, “replaces the traditional alternator and improves mpg, reduces idle and exhaust emissions, improves air quality, eliminates energy dependence and improves energy efficiency. Fleets can save thousands of dollars and receive significant reduced maintenance time and expense with the HBA for the transit bus.” Since 1977, Vanner has been involved in power conversion for commercial vehicles. Among its engineering projects is a collaboration with The Ohio State University Center for Automotive Research and other parties under a Third Frontier grant to electrify the bus to make it cleaner, more energy efficient with less maintenance. Winners in 16 categories were chosen from central Ohio individuals, companies and tech-
nology teams for their outstanding achievements in technology leadership and innovation. Winners were selected by independent judges from the community. More than 1,000 people attended the event. “The Innovation Awards has become the premier event for the central Ohio tech community, showcasing the best and brightest individuals, companies and technology teams for their contributions and achievements in innovation,” said Ted Ford, president and CEO of TechColumbus. “The leadership and work of these winners is a testament to the strong and thriving innovation economy here in the central Ohio region.” TechColumbus is a nonprofit organization that focuses on technology-based economic development in the 15 counties of central Ohio.
