“Go Back to the Future”
Chamber Community Annual Awards Celebration As they said in the film “Back to the Future,” “Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.” The Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its 5th annual Community Celebration event at St. Agatha Church-Parish Hall, 1860 Northam Road, Upper Arlington. Come join the community and area Chamber members, as we reminisce and ruminate on some of the exciting adventures and accomplishments past and present. Together we will honor previous winners, previous Chairman of the board, and individuals who, through their outstanding contributions, have been instrumental in affecting the future of the Upper Arlington area. Special Guest speaker will include Tom Walker President and CEO for TECHCOLUMBUS. I wanted to invite you personally to be an Upper Arlington Chamber guest at this year’s program. The evening will begin with a Business Showcase and Social, which is free and open to the community from 5 until 7 p.m. The Chamber invites the community to socialize while participating in the business showcase as it provides a stage for local member businesses to showcase their products and services. We are excited once again to feature an extension of our event with the special and unique Silent Auction that will have people buzzing around the tables all night. Take Five Jazz Quintet will provide the entertainment for attendees during the business showcase and social. All of you hold the future of our community in your hands. Never has there been a more exciting time to be engaged, a time of rousing wonder and achievement that pave the way for the future. As they said in the film “Back to the Future,” “Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.”

Chamber partners with the Upper Arlington High School “Circle of Stars” Since the beginning of the 2012-13 school year students enrolled in the UAHS Entrepreneurship & Management class have explored the world of business through the eyes of an Entrepreneur. Stephen Lewis, Sr. who teaches the course wants students to understand the value entrepreneurs have added to the global economy. “Entrepreneurs, by providing innovative goods and services, will create most of the new job growth. Management of these goods and services is critical to the success of any business, especially in a global economy.” As a result, students have explored the world of business through the research and creation of a new business venture. Continuing a tradition of support and mentorship, the Upper Arlington Chamber of Commerce partnered with students in the Entrepreneurship and Management class at UAHS in the past and this semester, members of the board served as a “panel of investors.” Three teams of stu-

Social Media Policy for Small Business
Use of social media in the workplace is experiencing explosive growth. According to one survey, 70% of employers now use social media in one way or another. Another survey indicates that 20% of employers use social media to make hiring decisions. Some employers have demanded that employees and applicants provide access to their social media sites by disclosing passwords and user names. Several states have now adopted laws prohibiting this. Also, the National Labor Relations Board has set limits on when an employer can discipline or discharge an employee based on something the employee posted on a social media site. Employers must comply with these laws while also protecting the confidentiality of trade secret information, and private

Many of the best practices developed to deal with other technologies that were once new still apply to the employer’s approach to social media. Having a well-crafted, legally compliant policy is the starting point. Understanding the technological features of social media also is important. Common sense answers are not always the right ones, so having a knowl-
edgeable resource person is a must. Finally, the law in this area is going to continue to change rapidly, so it is important to stay up to date on new developments.
