Mayoral race to feature Stinchcomb, McGregor By MARLA K. KUHLMAN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Gahanna residents will see at least two familiar candidates in the nonpartisan mayoral race this year. Jim McGregor, who previously held the post for 18 years, will challenge incumbent Becky Stinchcomb. The deadline to file with the Franklin County Board of Elections is Feb. 2 for the May 3 primary. If only two candidates file, no primary is needed. If more than two file, a May primary will be held, and a runoff be-
tween the top two vote-getters will occur in November. Stinchcomb was appointed to serve the last two years of McGregor’s unexpired term when he re- Becky signed as mayor in Stinchcomb October 2001 so he could be appointed to the Ohio House of Representatives. McGregor served as state representative for the 20th House District, covering Gahanna, Bexley, New Albany, White-
hall and parts of Columbus, from 2001 to 2008. He’s the current executive director of the Ohio League of Conservation Voters, a nonprofit, bi-partisan organization working on energy and conservation issues. Stinchcomb was elected as the Ward 3 city council representative five times, serving almost 10 years before being appointed mayor. She will run for her third full term as the city’s mayor. McGregor’s wife, Nancy McGregor, currently serves as an at-large council member, but she will not run for re-election for her seat that expires Dec. 31.
If McGregor wins the mayoral race, he would begin service in January 2012. McGregor, who served as Gahanna mayor from 1983 through 2001, said his Jim administration had fo- McGregor cused on fiscal integrity, capital improvements and the “greening” of Gahanna. “We built our park system during that time,” he said. McGregor came to the city from a ca-
reer at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. He said Ohio cities face a financially foreboding time, and cities should expect to lose state funding as the legislature grapples with an $8-billion deficit. “We must expect to lose the inheritance tax, which the state plans to eliminate in January of 2012,” he said. “We must expect the federal government to dramatically reduce their grants to cities as Congress works to avoid the financial miseries overtaking Europe.” See MAYORAL RACE, page A2

Gahanna Lincoln High School students presented senior projects to teachers, community and business leaders Jan. 20. Topics ranged from architecture to creating a web-design portfolio. Senior Sarah Lee researched graphic and web design and what it takes to be proficient in both. “I had to gain knowledge of coding languages that are used to create websites and also had to learn how to utilize design programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to aesthetically enhance my product, which is an online web design portfolio,” she told ThisWeek. “I hope to use my design portfolio in the future to become a freelance web designer.” Lee named her portfolio Dustral Design, which can be found at http://dustral.com. During her presentation, she said she first

became interested in web design through neopets.com. “There were user-communities called guilds for people who had similar interests,” Lee said. “It was beautifully designed.” She researched the web to find samples of good design like the Apple web site to others that showed bad design.
Principal Dwight Carter, one of Lee’s judges, asked what skills she learned through the process. He also asked her to rate herself. “I feel like I learned patience,” she said. “And I learned to be a better problem-solver. The coding was difficult.” Lee said she would give herself a high B for her project. “I had trouble using some of the coding language,” she said. “CSS (the design and look) was the hardest for me. I did get everything turned in on time.” District technology director Joe Schiska, another of Lee’s judges, questioned the educational value of the senior project versus a traditional educational experience. “It’s like being thrown into the deep end of the pool,” Lee said. “As I read through design blogs, there’s so much more to the design process. Economic forecast breakfast
U.S. Treasury consultant to share insights By MARLA K. KUHLMAN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
The local community can learn Wednesday, Feb. 2, if there will be a shadow over business this year, during Gahanna’s 14th annual Groundhog Day economic forecast breakfast. The free event will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Creekside Conference and Event Center, 700 Creekside Plaza. Leah Evans, Gahanna economic development manager, said the breakfast celebrates Gahanna’s business community and provides an opportunity for net-
working with Gahanna businesses and elected officials. “Anyone interested in doing business is welcome to attend,” Evans said. “It’s our time to shine and celebrate our business community.” The Groundhog Day special event was first held at one of AEP’s newly constructed buildings in Gahanna with approximately 80 to 90 attending, Evans said. This year the city is expecting more than 300 people. Those attending should register by sending their name, business name, phone number and email address

Voters in Gahanna and unincorporated areas of Mifflin Township again will see levies to support the township fire and police departments. Mifflin Township trustees on Jan. 25 voted to place the levies on the May 3 ballot. The trustees voted for a 3.8mill levy to support the fire department and an 8.8-mill levy to support the police department — the same levies voters defeated in November. The deadline to place levies on the May ballot is Feb. 2. Voters in the city of Gahanna and the township will vote on the fire levy because the Mifflin Township Fire Department provides service to Gahanna and the township. Only township residents will vote on the police levy because the Mifflin Township Police Department serves the unincorporated areas of the township. The levies, if approved, would
generate $3.8-million for the fire department and about $389,000 for the police department, respectively, according to the Franklin County Auditor’s Office. The fire levy would cost about $116 more annually for every $100,000 of assessed property valuation, and the police levy would cost residents in the unincorporated areas of the township about $269 a year per $100,000. The trustees had been prepared Jan. 18 to approve resolutions to place the levies on the May ballot but postponed approval after Fire Chief Jim DeConnick raised concerns about the ballot language for the fire levy. Police Chief Michael Pocock also requested additional time to study the ballot language and his options after fiscal officer Nancy White pointed out that a separate five-year, 2-mill levy that funds the police department is up for renewal this year and will need to be placed on the November ballot. MAYORAL RACE Continued from page A1 McGregor said the present administration and council have passed deficit budgets in the past two years. “They have consciously planned to spend more money each year than their expected annual income,” he said. “The administration and council have made up the difference from savings left to them by years of frugal management. They plan to close the hole by increasing our income taxes from 1.5 percent to 2.5 percent and increasing the piggy-back tax.” Gahanna’s current administration and council formed a citizens financial advisory committee last year, and one recommendation is to go on the November ballot to increase the income tax. With the challenges Gahanna is facing, Stinchcomb said, resi-

dents and businesses need the continuity of the current leadership that she and her team can provide. “Any new mayor, whether they have held the seat in the past or not, will quite honestly have a long learning curve to get up to speed with the fast pace of city hall today,” she said. Stinchcomb said the notion that the city isn’t living within its means is simply not true. “As our finance department works diligently to close the books on 2010, we know that in actuality, your city government spent several hundred-thousand dollars less than we received in revenues, with our reserve accounts remaining stable,” she said. “This was only achieved by competent financial management and constant attention and adjustments to our new financial realities.” Stinchcomb said much has changed for the better in Gahan-
na the past 10 years. “Creekside put us ‘on the map’ and led to Gahanna being one of the top 100 cities in the nation in 2007 — a never-before realized honor,” she said. “My team and I are very proud of what we have built together with private development partnerships. Creekside has become the heart of our city for not only new businesses but for community events and celebrations.” Stinchcomb said she’s proud of her record of building strong relationships among the city, schools, township, county, state and federal representatives, as well as Gahanna businesses and community organizations. “I want to keep Gahanna moving forward as a community,” she said.

Meadowbrooke workshop slated to continue Feb. 2 By MARLA K. KUHLMAN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
A workshop to revise plans for the Meadowbrooke subdivision, 5593 Havens Corners Road, has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Feb. 2 at Gahanna City Hall. At the request of applicant Brookewood Construction Co., a workshop continuance has been rescheduled from Jan. 19. Planning members still took time during a workshop last week to discuss the proposal, asking that planning and zoning administrator Bonnie Gard give Brookewood even more guidance. David Hodge, representing Brookewood, had requested a variance to allow an increase in overall residential density from 9 to 15 lots; zoning 4.7 acres Residential Overlay District/Single Family, and dedicating 1.297 acres of parkland. During a Jan. 5 workshop, commission chairperson Kristen Rosen asked the developer to finetune issues with Mifflin Township Fire Department, including access, and the possibility of reworking a proposed private drive. She also asked that lots seven through 10 be reconfigured and requested further consultation with the Franklin Soil & Water Conservation District Neighbors have expressed concerns about density, traffic, stormwater and the effect on
Rocky Fork Creek. Commission member David Andrews said he walked the property. He noted that residents have spent thousands of their own dollars trying to address erosion problems. “My gist of the whole thing is that they (neighbors) are not happy with (any) homes, but they can live with nine homes,” he said. The commission wants engineer Jim Watkins to return to explain the movement of water. “We need him to be more specific so we understand how it’s going to solve the problem,” said commission member Jennifer Price. Commissioner David Thom said he wants to know whether the city promised residents help with erosion problems. “If the city was going to do something, what was it and why wasn’t it done?” Thom asked. Rosan said remembers the condition of the creek being on the city’s radar screen. “I live along the stream near the preserve,” she said. “Several of my neighbors added white rock. … It’s clear it’s eroding. It’s not an issue just for these residents.” Price said the Meadowbrooke development has brought “huge issues” to the commission’s attention.
The proposed lease-purchase agreement, beginning in February and ending Jan. 31, 2016, is between the Gahanna CIC, landlord and the city of Gahanna, tenant. All property taxes, insurance, utilities and sums would be due to Yates, LLC on a mortgage that exists on the premises. The CIC currently has the property’s building managed by The Commercial Partnership. CIC president Andre Porter said the building, built in the early 1960s, is 81 percent occupied. In 2010, seven leases were renewed. Nine business tenants lease 6,301 square feet.
Council is considering an ordinance to purchase the property for $730,000 over a five-year period at $146,000 annually, using funds from the West Gahanna Tax Increment Funding (TIF) Capital Projects/Improvements. The TIF was established in 2007 to secure funds to make public improvements within the Olde Gahanna/West Gahanna area, according to Karl Wetherholt, city engineer. The property is at the point where Shull Avenue will need to be extended in the future, Wetherholt said. White said the building was
more occupied in 2008 than it is now, and the CIC has agreed to sell it. The CIC, incorporated in 1965, is a nonprofit organization formed under city legislation to promote “the industrial, economic, commercial and civic development of a community or area.” “The city really wants the right-of-way,” White added. “In five years, the city would own all the property and building. It really benefits the city of Gahanna.” Councilman Shane Ewald said he supports moving forward with the agreement because that corner has been a concern.
“I made a commitment years ago to improve the traffic flow there,” he said. Mayor Becky Stinchcomb said the city’s intention is to eventually bulldoze the building and extend the road. “There’s only one way in and out for that neighborhood,” she added. “If we would need to evacuate, it would be good to have another way in and out. There are a lot of benefits to extending Shull.” The CIC has also requested council approve an annual agreement that authorizes the nonprofit See COUNCIL, page A8

CFAC member responds to McGregor’s comments To the editor: In regard to former Mayor Jim McGregor’s letter Jan. 20, I want to respond to just a few of his statements. As a member of the “study group” (i.e. citizens financial advisory council, or CFAC), I do this not on behalf of the CFAC but as a citizen of Gahanna for the past seven years. This preface is due to the respect for the diverse opinions members on the CFAC held. CFAC members were not of a unanimous opinion, but we did reach a consensus as an apolitical group of Gahanna citizens attempting to struggle with concerns for the serious fiscal outlook of a city we all care about. First, Mr. McGregor writes at the end of his initial paragraph, “They state that Gahanna’s income-tax rate has not changed for 33 years.” His wording may move one to believe that this statement is an opinion, when it is an objective fact. In the next paragraph, the CFAC did not “argue that the tax increase will bring in …” The report purely presented projections of what the rate change would mean in increased revenue to the city. Numbers were based on the full access and extraordinary amount of information shared with the CFAC by the adminis-
tration. In re-reading the report, I cannot find where the CFAC stated that an additional $10-million would allow residents “to see vibrant and ubiquitous city services.” The report made a firm attempt to stay away from the type of hyperbolic semantics that Mr. McGregor attributes. I believe the report’s wording is, “In an effort to re-strengthen the foundation of service expected by Gahanna citizens, as well as to grow the city’s quality of life and sustainability …” He wrote that “these arguments, though well intentioned, are wrong on all counts.” There were (and remain) differing opinions among committee members in regard to some recommendations. However, Mr. McGregor’s peremptory expression, dismissing this particular recommendation outright, does an injustice to having this potential revenue generator fairly considered by citizens. Yes, income has not been static. Through the 1980s and ’90s, Gahanna was growing, allowing for an expanding tax base, without having to increase the income-tax rate. It is a testament to our city’s desirability that has brought us to the point where Gahanna is almost “built out” (minimal amounts of vacant land left for expansion). That fact is a game

changer. Gahanna citizens can either accept this as a reality or choose to ignore it. Regardless, the impact on reaching this level of maturity as a city limits current and future revenue growth that allowed the income-tax rate to remain unchanged for 33 years. Gahanna has been stewarded well. No one likes to see taxes raised. The recommendation of an income-tax increase was only one of a number of recommendations the CFAC had submitted in its report. I encourage all Gahanna citizens to read the full report, which is on the city’s website and on ThisWeekNEWS.com. Also, please encourage city council to know that you want the choice of addressing this issue on the ballot in November. Whether you ultimately vote for or against an increase — or any issue, for that matter — should be on the basis of full and factual knowledge of its implications and impact, not predominately by opinions and rhetoric. Placing this issue on the ballot will ensure a full discourse (and surely plenty of rhetoric) of its impact. Let Gahanna citizens decide what kind of city they desire in the future. We all know the bond between ourselves and our pets is very strong. Our pets rely on us daily to provide affection and compassion as well as care for their physical needs. In return our pets lavish us with their constant affection and approval. Trying to survive the responsibilities and pressures of today’s world keeps most of us occupied for much more time than we might desire. It seems that we are likely unaware of the amount of time our pet spends alone. No matter if the house is full of children or a single adult, that solitary time for our pet can be devastating. Providing a home for a second or third pet can add companionship and purpose to that non-people time. The next time you visit animals in a group setting like an animal shelter, doggie day care, cat adoption center or even the zoo, notice the comforting and playful interactions between individuals. Asking our pet to cope without this soothing interaction can have many consequences. The psychological effects of boredom can be manifested in various ways. Destruction of their environment, unwanted elimination patterns, incessant vocalization and even self mutilation are all expressions of boredom. One of the most reliable treatments for separation anxiety can be a companion for our companion. The physical effects of boredom are dangerous for our pets. Lack of enough activity while alone leads to problems with overeating and obesity. Left unchecked these can lead to diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease as well as dermatitis and arthritis. Friendship and other social interactions are important and often overlooked by pet owners. Bringing a second or third pet into your home is a reliable solution. Adjustment between pets usually takes less than three weeks and many times the bonding is spontaneous. If adding another pet is not possible, then providing social interaction elsewhere at pet daycares or neighborhood gatherings can be beneficial. PLEASE, DON’T LET ME BE LONELY...

COUNCIL SEAT

Continued from page A1
Continued from page A1 “Groundhog Day supports the department’s mission to attract, retain, and foster business in the Gahanna community through engagement in a networking and educational event,” Evans said. “Annually, this event provides valuable economic forecast information to Gahanna businesses for decision making and strategic planning and provides an opportunity for Gahanna business owners to interact with each other and community leaders.” Additionally, the city presents Excellence in Development Awards to the previous year’s exceptional projects and public/private partnerships that have invested in the community and provided value-added benefits for the residents and businesses of Gahanna. Past award winners have included the development of a new model neighborhood clinic, a new mixed-use retail, office, and residential project, and a project using green building principles. Through surveys and correspondence, Evans said the information has assisted existing Gahanna business in planning for positive and negative trends in the economy. “The event is an innovative approach to relationship building and business engagement,” Evans said. “ This event has grown beyond the Gahanna business community and has become a ‘must attend’ event in the central Ohio region for businesses and economic development professionals and civic leaders from other communities.” Gahanna’s annual Groundhog Day Economic Forecast Breakfast won a Mid-America Economic Development Council 2010 Annual Economic Development Award for Special Event. mkuhlman@thisweeknews.com

EARS AND HEART SHARE MORE THAN 3 LETTERS According to a recent Canadian study, prolonged exposure to loud noise may be as bad for the heart as it is for the ears. Researchers have found that people who have worked in noisy workplaces for at least one-and-a-half years may have triple the risk of developing serious heart problems compared with workers in quieter environments. Workers in noisy environments tended to be overweight and to smoke, which are also risk factors for heart disease. The noise-induced heart disease link seemed to be strongest in men under age 50. It is thought that the stress caused by loud noise could lead to constricted blood flow through the coronary arteries. Whatever the mechanism, workers in loud environments should protect their ears. Pilots, construction workers, rock musicians, even landscape artists wear ear protection while working. The noise levels in many instances in our lives is enough to cause hearing to deteriorate, often without our being aware of happening. Do you spend lots of time in a noisy environment? DeConnick said he wanted to see if the ballot language for the fire levy could be changed to better explain how the money would be used. White said the township would have to check with the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office for approval to do so. Trustee chairman Joe Spanovich said Pocock has “a vexing problem” with the police-levy situation. “You have to make a decision on how you want to place them on the ballot, if you want to place them on the ballot,” he said. Trustees also approved temporary budget appropriations for 2011, based on each department head’s proposed budgets for the year. The trustees will hold a staff meeting at 10 a.m. Feb. 7 and their next regular meeting at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 15 in the township hall, 155 Olde Ridenour Road.

COUNCIL
COMMISSION
January 27, 2011
ThisWeekNEWS.com & ThisWeekSPORTS.com
Continued from page A3
Continued from page A3 “There needs to be a multi-pronged approach to solving issues,” she said. “There seems to be a big need for education, and a need to address problems from multiple angles.” Commissioner Bob Westwood said residents should expect flooding if they purchase a house that abuts a stream. “If you buy it, you live with it,” he said. “I look at it as progress. I don’t see how five to 15 houses are going to change this area.” Andrews said the proposed Meadowbrooke is on a beautiful piece of property, with trees and a beautiful stream. “I find it hard to believe they can’t develop it with higherpriced homes,” he said. Even with the poor economy, Andrews said, people still are buying homes in the $400,000-plus range. “Their whole reason for coming in was the economy,” Thom said. He doesn’t see the homes’ prices making that big of a difference. Hodge previously told the commission that more lots are being proposed to make it a more economically viable project. The average home would be 2,500 square feet and sell between $250,000 and $275,000, he said. Gard told the developer the city is seeing housing permits in the $400,000-$600,000 price range. “We’re not seeing the lower end of houses being built,” she said. “He was aware that was a concern.” Gard said Brookewood would submit new plans for the development. The commission also postponed a workshop for Christian Meeting Room Inc., 5990 Taylor Road, to Feb. 16 at the applicant’s request. Deputy development director Anthony Jones told the commission that one of his department’s goals is to make the planning process as efficient and relevant as possible. “Every quarter we’re going through 10 sections of the planning code,” he said. He asked the commission to review modifications with him and provide any feedback by Feb. 16. The commission last week also continued reviewing proposed code changes to the Olde Gahanna Downtown District.

Sinus infections can be frequent
Frequent sinus infections in children are a common problem, especially for children in daycare settings. The average child can have six to ten upper respiratory tract infections a year that have symptoms including nasal discharge and blockage. Other factors that contribute to frequent sinus infections are environmental allergies, exposure to second-hand smoke, immunodeficiency, congenital craniofacial anomalies and some inherited conditions. Children with lung problems such as asthma and cystic fibrosis often have related sinus problems. Most viral infections will resolve without treatment. A small percentage will progress to bacterial sinusitis that will require antibiotics for treatment. Narrowing or blockage of the nasal passages or sinus openings may increase the chances that a cold will progress to bacterial sinusitis. Often, children may need medication to help treat sinus probCheck out recent home sales lems. such as antihistamines. In a small percentage of children, surgery may be necessary to relieve the CHARLES blockage and the siELMARAGHY open nuses or nasal passages. Prior to any surgery, a thorough work-up is necessary in order to determine the appropriate treatment course. Younger children do not typically need surgery on the sinuses as their sinuses are still developing. Younger children with frequent sinus infections often have their adenoid, a patch of tissue located where the nose and throat join, removed. The adenoid can be a haven for bacteria and can often block the nasal passages. Removing the adenoid is a simple and painless surgery that can be very effective. When the sinus problem is more involved than an enlarged adenoid, the sinuses need to be imaged via a special X-ray called a CT scan to investigate the anatomy of the
sinuses and determine if the openings of the sinuses are blocked. If sinus openings are blocked, they can be enlarged using special instruments and a small camera called an endoscope. This is called endoscopic sinus surgery. The natural openings are widened and preservation of normal anatomy is the goal. Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Rhinology Clinic is unique in that it offers allergy testing and endoscopic evaluation during the same visit. This allows both the allergist and otolaryngologist to determine an appropriate treatment plan. You should always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health care provider prior to starting or stopping any treatment or with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. Dr. Charles Elmaraghy is a member of the Department of Otolaryngology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and an assistant professor of clinical otolaryngology at the Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Boys team tuning up for postseason By JARROD ULREY ThisWeek Community Newspapers
The Gahanna Lincoln High School boys basketball team got what coach Tony Staib called a “taste” of what the coming Division I district tournament could be like in the Ohio Play-By-Play Classic on Jan. 22 at Capital University. If the Lions play in the postseason the way they did in a 68-43 victory over Chillicothe that night, they should make another deep run. The Cavaliers entered the matchup
as the No. 2-ranked team in the Division II state poll and Gahanna was fourth in Division I, but the Lions gained control early and closed the game on a 19-6 run. The neutral court was something that Gahanna, which is on pace to earn one of the top seeds at the district seeding meeting on Feb. 13, seemed to savor after struggling to a 44-34 victory over Newark the previous day. “This is our stretch run, and it prepares us really well,” said Stevie Taylor, who scored 28 points against Chill-
icothe and earned the game’s MVP honor. “It was a neutral court, and most of our players have played in big games before. Going up against Newark was (another) deal.” Before focusing on the district tournament, however, Gahanna will look to win its second consecutive OCCOhio Division championship. The Lions played Lancaster on Jan. 25 and play host to Pickerington Central on Friday, Jan. 28, followed by games against Pickerington North (Feb. 4), Grove City (Feb. 8), Reynoldsburg (Feb. 11)
and Groveport (Feb. 18). The victory over Newark was the Lions’ second consecutive by 10 points or fewer. They shot 0-for-13 from 3point range but compensated with strong defense. Gahanna then held a pair of talented players, 6-foot-8 junior Malik London and 6-6 senior Jalen Ragland, to six and eight points, respectively, against Chillicothe. “I thought we did a tremendous job against two very good players,” Staib said. “Chillicothe is a very good team
and they score in spurts. (Taylor) is a four-year starter who has gotten a lot of big games under his belt and plays well on the big stage. Now we’re done with all of our non-conference games and can focus on our league schedule and the tournament.” •The girls team is looking for more consistency as it heads into the final weeks of the regular season. During a 42-41 loss to Watterson on Jan. 18, the Lions rallied from a 26-10 See BASKETBALL, page B2

OHSAA division changes not fair
‘Big match’ looming for Gahanna boys
It’s not hard to imagine the confrontational feelings that were created when the OHSAA released a statement Jan. 13 announcing that it was tackling the seemingly age-old debate regarding competitive balance among the state’s public and private schools. The proposed referJARROD endum, to be ULREY voted on by O H S A A member schools in May, initially would reset divisional alignments in football, baseball, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, girls volleyball and softball based on a school’s sport-by-sport “athletic count.” That figure would be calculated using mathematical factors that take into account economics, school enrollment policies and tradition. On one side of the debate are public schools that won only eight of the 27 state team titles — one of six in football — that the OHSAA awarded during the 2010 fall season. Many in the private-school camp, meanwhile, are left to wonder whether rules changes, which seemingly would bump them into larger divisions, are fair. There are many reasons for the disproportionate number of titles won by private schools, but the primary one is that some of those schools can assemble virtual all-star teams from fiveand six-county areas. With that in mind, it does seem reasonable for the OHSAA to visit the issue of boundaries when determining the divisions for private schools, and some large public schools. The biggest problem I have is with the “tradition factor” that would increase a school’s “athletic count.” The OHSAA says this aspect would be determined by “state championship game appearances, state tournament appearances and regional finals appearances.” The implication of this sounds more like a step toward eventually giving participation medals to everyone as opposed to rewarding the best of the best. Few people want to see Delphos St. John’s beat Shadyside 77-6 for the Division VI state football title, and having Youngstown Ursuline win three consecutive Division V state championships is less than ideal when talking about keeping the field balanced. The problem is that if the OHSAA moves St. John’s up to Division V and Ursuline to Division IV, the same problems will persist, but with different teams. If Hartley would have been in Division III instead of Division IV last fall, it would have been a strong candidate to win

By FRANK DiRENNA Jacob Reed and his teammates on the Gahanna Lincoln High School boys bowling team look forward to competing against the best teams in the area. The Lions have one such match when they oppose Westerville Central on Thursday, Jan. 27, at Gahanna Lanes. The Warhawks’ boys and girls teams entered the week undefeated in the Central Ohio High School Bowling ConferenceNorth Division, along with Jonathan Alder and Westerville South. “We’ve been focusing a lot in practices and in team meetings about how do you handle a big match,” coach Bruce Zink said. “It’s not as much of the physical game as it is the mental game and taking it one shot at a time.” “I’ve been looking forward to this match since the beginning of the year and we’re bowling them at home,” Reed said. “We just have to focus on the way we bowl, because in bowling you can’t really control what the other team does.” Reed, a senior, had a 191 game average through 11 matches, with a high game of 269 against Thomas Worthington on Jan. 6. He had a pair of 268 games at the Central District Preview Tournament on Jan. 15. Zink also has been impressed with the play of juniors Christopher Bucklad (176 average) and Aaron May (164). “It’s a blessing and also a little bit of a challenge, because I like to get all my kids to bowl,” Zink said. “When they’re that close, it’s really hard to decide who bowls and who doesn’t.” The Lions’ lineup took a hit when senior Ryan Arras dislocated his kneecap during the preseason. He likely is out for the season, Zink said. See BOWLING, page B2

Brown’s injury leaves Lions shorthanded By JARROD ULREY ThisWeek Community Newspapers
During Nick Brown’s opening match Jan. 22 in the Gahanna Lincoln High School wrestling team’s Lion Duals, coach Kyle Bentley heard an unidentifiable “pop” on the mat. The Lions only can hope that the sound wasn’t some of the air deflating from their season. Brown, a four-year starter who went 12 at the Division I state tournament at 189 pounds a year ago, went on to win the match against his Canal Winchester opponent to improve to 18-5 on the season. He then left the gym and underwent tests to determine the extent of the knee injury he endured. The doctor who initially treated Brown believed it was an ACL injury, although Bentley tried to remain positive about whether Brown can return this season. “We’ll see what’s going to happen,” Bentley said. “He’s pretty beat up. He’s been wrestling pretty hard and he really is a hard-working kid and a pretty tough kid. He wants to win really bad.” The status of Brown will have a huge affect on whether the Lions can defend their OCC-Ohio Division title and in how many qualifiers they’ll have in each round of the postseason. Gahanna lost to Lancaster 47-17 on Jan. 6 with Brown and is 3-1 in the OCCOhio heading into its home conference match Thursday, Jan. 27, against Pickerington Central when it will celebrate senior night. Still remaining are league duals Feb. 3 at Grove City and Feb. 10 at home See ULREY, page B3 against Pickerington North.

Gahanna’s Doryan Arnold works on Nick Brady of Canal Winchester in a match at 119 pounds during the Lion Duals on Jan. 22. The Lions, 3-1 in the OCC-Ohio, play host to Pickerington Central on Thursday, Jan. 27.
“When you lose a four-year starter like Nick, it takes some of the punch out of your lineup,” Bentley said. “I think Lancaster probably (will win the OCCOhio) because they haven’t lost a match yet. We won the OCC on a technicality last year, so crazy things can happen. I don’t really care about the OCC. It’s
more the icing on the cake when you’re getting ready for sectionals. The state meet is really our goal, and we’ve got four or maybe five guys who could make it that far.” Those on target to go deep into the postseason, according to Bentley, include sophomores Drew McDougle (130) and Kasee
McDougle (135) and seniors Justin Strohschein (152) and Evan Bergenstein (215). In the area coaches poll last week, Gahanna was ninth as Drew McDougle was second and Brown was first individually at their respective weights. See WRESTLING, page B2

Academy Roundup
Three wrestlers glad they stayed with team By FRANK DiRENNA
At a glance
ThisWeek Community Newspapers
With just three wrestlers on the roster, the Columbus Academy wrestling team has become a close-knit family. As Johnston Allinder competed in the Grandview Invitational on Jan. 22, the families of teammates Dan Leathery and Jeremy Schroeder enthusiastically cheered on the sophomore. The Vikings had seven wrestlers on the roster the past two seasons. However, Jacob Peters and Mike Roehrenbeck graduated last spring and three others opted not to return for their senior seasons. Consequently, Academy hasn’t had much success at the team level this season, but the three wrestlers have done well individually. The Vikings managed to finish ahead of three teams in the 16-team Grandview Invitational, scoring 42.5 points to place 13th behind champion Whitehall (319) and ahead of Africentric (30), Columbus East (26) and Eastmoor Academy (4). “I’ve never been on a team where we didn’t have enough people to be able to win a dual meet unless the other team was short on kids, too, so that hasn’t been as big of a frustration, because it’s never whether the team could win, it was more individual,” Leathery said. Leathery, a junior, has the most experience of the three. He finished third at Grandview at 140 pounds, posting a 3-1 record to raise his season record to 11-4. He finished first at 145 in the Hudson Western Reserve Duals on Jan. 8. Leathery was 0-2 at the Division II sectional tournament each of the past two seasons, marks he hopes to improve on this season. “I’m hoping to keep wrestling well and hopefully qualify for

districts,” he said. “I have to work better at getting out on bottom. That’s something I haven’t been great at. I’m pretty solid on my feet. Hopefully, I will learn to turn people a little better.” Leathery considered leaving the team during the preseason, but ultimately decided to continue his commitment to the program. “It was a tough decision to make obviously, because the three seniors were gone and we have a three-person team, but I’m definitely proud that I am sticking with it,” Leathery said. Allinder went 3-2 at 160 at Grandview to place fifth and raise his season record to 6-8, which includes a runner-up fin-
ish at 160 at the Western Reserve Duals. He was 0-2 at 152 at sectional last season. “I’m hoping this year to go at least a little further,” Allinder said. “I hope I have more experience and more technique and I know what I’m doing.” A freshman, Schroeder is showing promise, according to fifth-year coach Paul Bukky. Schroeder is 6-6 after placing sixth at 135 at the Grandview Invitational. He was third at 135 at the Western Reserve Duals. “I considered leaving the team, but I decided it would be worth it to stay, but it’s tough having three people,” Schroeder said. All three wrestlers began competing in the sport in sev-

enth grade at Academy. Each emphasized that the limited roster has allowed for more oneon-one interaction with Bukky and first-year assistant coach Matt Ely. “It’s kind of nice because we have coach Bukky and since it’s just the three of us, we get real good one-on-one attention,” Allinder said. “They’re great kids,” Bukky said. “They’ll do everything that you ask them to do. Sometimes you’ve got it and sometimes you don’t, but they enjoy the other aspects of the sport — the friendships, we’re working together, we’re all trying to accomplish a goal. They enjoy that aspect of it.” www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com

ULREY school and public-school tournaments, but that only would hurt the spirit of competition that should exist when determining the state’s best. Is there an obvious solution to the issue? Not exactly, but it doesn’t seem like radical change is necessary. Tradition should be kept out of the equation. Teams like DeSales and Watterson have earned their success by creating programs that teach winning football. This shouldn’t be penalized, but emulated by other programs. Keeping in mind the boundary issues, the OHSAA should choose to tweak, rather than revamp, the way it determines its tournament divisions. Let the rest of the arguments be settled on the field.

Schools that could end up getting hurt unintentionally by a change are the Division I public schools. A perennial central Ohio football power such as Hilliard Davidson not only has to overcome fellow area public-school powers such as Pickerington Central and Dublin Coffman, but a team such as Cincinnati St. Xavier, which has 1,171 boys, could be looming later in the playoffs. The new formula potentially also would move state powers such as Mentor Lake Catholic and Toledo Central Catholic into Division I, making julrey@thisweeknews.com a tough field even tougher. Community briefs • Lincoln High School’s DECA Program and NBC-4 are teaming up to make the school’s home basketball game on Friday, Jan. 28, a charity event for the Autism Society of Ohio (ASO). A special “Alley-Oop for Autism” Tshirt can be purchased for $10 during school hours at the high school’s store, The Paw Print, at 140 S. Hamilton Road. Those wearing the special T-shirt will gain free admission to the game. Gahanna-Jefferson community members are encouraged to help those with autism by attending the game and buying a T-shirt. Gahanna DECA members set a goal of raising at least $1,000 for the ASO while increasing awareness for the organization this year. The ASO is an organization dedicated to helping families that have children with autism by providing support, legislation and resources about autism. Gahanna DECA consists of 25 senior students interested in careers in marketing, management and entrepreneurship. For more information about the event and DECA, visit www.facebook.com/gahannapawprint. For more information about the Autism Society of Ohio, visit
http://www.autismohio.org. • Gahanna’s Cap City Fine Diner Bar, 1301 Stoneridge Drive, will celebrate “Chocolate Cake Day” for three days beginning Jan. 27, with the Children’s Hunger Alliance (CHA) getting a piece of sales. For every piece of Cap City’s Seriously Big Chocolate Cake that’s sold during lunch and dinner from Jan. 27-29, $1 will be donated to CHA. Tracey Smith, marketing manager for Cameron Mitchell restaurants, said this is the first year Cap City has participated in the promotion. Children’s Hunger Alliance is a statewide nonprofit agency working toward long-term solutions to fighting childhood hunger. To achieve their goal, they work with schools, youth-serving nonprofits, faith-based groups and child care providers to increase participation in USDA Child Nutrition Programs. In addition, they fight hunger and poor nutrition with education, physical activity information and supplemental resources for caregivers, parents and children. For reservations to Cap City, visit www.cameronmitchell.com. • Gahanna Village Hairsmiths, 141
Granville St., helped provide “princess makeovers” on Jan. 20 to three young ladies who have life threatening diseases. The Village Hairsmiths’Denise Cramblit performed manicures for the little girls and Rena Parrill helped with hair styling before they attended Disney on Ice’s Princess Classic show at Nationwide Arena. The girls included Emily Ware, a 10year-old from Springfield, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at age two; A’lasia Jones, a nine-year-old from Columbus, who was diagnosed with Sickle Cell disease at just three weeks old; and Rylee Cavins, a 10-year-old from Marysville who was diagnosed with Ewlings Sarcoma, a form of bone cancer, at age eight. After the makeovers, one of the stars of Disney on Ice visited the girls and took pictures with them. • TechColumbus announced Jan. 18 that four Gahanna leaders and companies are semifinalists for the annual Innovation Awards. Gahanna’s semifinalists and their category recognitions include Paul Kolada, principal of PD Worx for outstanding product, company with fewer than 50 employees; Jason Ertel, senior mechanical
engineer, Zukun Plan LLC for outstanding service, company with fewer than 50 employees; People to My Site for outstanding service for a company with fewer than 50 employees; and Jennifer Ridenour, CEO, People to My Site for outstanding woman in technology. The Innovation Awards recognize central Ohio leaders and companies for outstanding achievements in technology leadership and innovation. Thirteen business leaders and two high school students will be recognized in various categories at a ceremony on Feb. 3 at the new Battelle Hall in the Greater Columbus Convention Center, where more than 1,000 people are expected to be in attendance to celebrate central Ohio’s robust and thriving innovation economy. The event is open to the business community with corporate tables and individual tickets available. To register for the event, visit: www.techcolumbus.org/techcolumbusinnovation-awards. • Gahanna City Council approved legislation Jan. 18 to apply for a grant through the Clean Ohio Trail Fund. An ordinance was approved 5-1, with council member John McAlister dis-
senting, saying he was compelled to vote no based on principle and his objection to how the grants are funded. Parks-recreation director Tony Collins said the grant would provide funding to complete about 3,000 feet for Section 3 of the Big Walnut Trail. Section 3 would connect the existing trail near the bridge, between Woodside Green and Academy Park, and proceed south, making a connection to Nob Hill Drive. The cost is estimated at $343,000. The city is proposing a 75-percent grant. If approved, Collins said, the city’s obligation would be $82,000 to 86,000, with completion expected in 2012. Gahanna should learn whether it will receive the grant sometime in the fall, according to Collins. • Columbus Metro Federal Credit Union has opened a new office at 5600 N. Hamilton Road. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 31. A week-long grand opening celebration will follow. Members and area residents are invited to stop in and see the office, meet the staff and enjoy refreshments, prize drawings and giveaways.
