School district will seek 14.78-mill levy By TARA STUBBS-FIGURSKI ThisWeek Community Newspapers The Canal Winchester Board of Education agreed during a special meeting on Monday, Jan. 24, to seek a 14.78-mill, three-year emergency levy in May. If approved, it would generate $6,439,000 per year. Monday’s vote to establish the size of the request followed a unanimous vote on Jan. 13 to place a renewal levy on ballot. An emergency levy approved last year will expire in 2012. Board member Brian Niceswanger asked the board to consider request 13.78 mills instead of 14.78 mills. “I think it is critical to get this passed this May,” he said. Niceswanger said the slight reduction would demonstrate to the community the board is aware of tough economic times and that continuing to pay the higher level is a strain for
taxpayers. He said the lower millage request would also show the district is being as cost-effective and efficient as possible. “We will continue to look for ways to save money,” he said. “This would be a good demonstration on our part and help market the renewal and go further toward getting it passed.” Niceswanger said voters have told him they had to pay a portion of their tax bill with a credit card or postponed family vacations so they could pay their taxes. People in the community are still smarting from the emergency levy passed two years ago, he said. Board member Michael Yonnotti asked how asking for 1-mill less would affect the school district. A 1-mill reduction would cost the district $436,000 a year, Niceswanger said. School board member David Brobst said the loss of another $400,000 would be difficult for the district to absorb.
“It seems like a tough row to hoe,” he said. It costs the owner of a $100,000 home $35 for every 1 mill, school district officials said. Brobst said decreasing the millage request results in a significant impact to the school district. “I’m not just too sure you are going to sway a lot of people with $2.50 a month or $5 a month,” he said. Superintendent Kimberley MillerSmith said a 1-mill reduction would cost the school district an additional seven teachers. District officials are looking at other avenues to save costs but personnel will need to be cut to offset revenue losses from the state, she said. Canal Winchester Village Council agreed last week to go along with a staff recommendation and deny Wendell Collier permission for a metal carport and gravel pathway for his home at 180 W. Waterloo St. Council held a public hearing Jan. 3 to hear comments on an appeal filed by Collier. His home is located in the village’s designated Preservation Area. The Canal Winchester Planning and Zoning Commission denied Collier’s request for variances to allow an accessory structure without a principal structure, a gravel driveway, accessory structures within sideyard setbacks and multiple accessory structures on a single property. He also requested permission to erect two
The planning commission heard the original application in October, at which time members denied the variances and the carports. Collier appealed the decision to council and prior to the public hearing, he removed the larger of the two carports from his property so the application was referred back to the planning commission. Collier said earlier this month he started keeping a trailer behind a fence on his property a year ago. He wanted the carport to protect the trailer because young people were dropping rocks on it from nearby railroad tracks and because the trailer was sustaining damage from a large tree on the property. Council members said at their Jan. 3 meeting they would be willing to give Collier a year to re-

The findings of fact report prepared by the village staff and approved by council said council denied the variance request and stipulated that Collier will remove all metal carport structures and the gravel driveway within one year. The report said council must consider several criteria when approving a variance, including special circumstances that might exist which are not applicable to other lands in the same zoning district; whether the interpretation of the zoning code would deprive the applicant of rights commonly en-
By TARA STUBBS-FIGURSKI ThisWeek Community Newspapers Main Street Canal Winchester hopes the very successful year the organization had in 2010 will continue into 2011. Main Street Canal Winchester representatives recently met with members of Canal Winchester Village Council to report on the group’s accomplishments. “We had an exceptional year any way you look at it,” Main Street Canal Winchester executive director Bruce Jarvis said. Going forward, he said Main Street Canal Winchester will focus on looking for ways to cut costs for 2011. “We are going to try to build in some efficiency in the way that we are doing things,” he said. “We are trying to be cost-conscious this year with where things are in the economy.”
Membership will also be a focus for 2011, Jarvis said, as Main Street representatives plan to spend more time with local businesses and try to increase support for the organization. He told council he was very pleased with last year’s Main Street programs, led by the first Canal Winchester Blues and Ribfest, which proved to be very popular. More than 20,000 people attended, many of whom were visiting Canal Winchester for the first time, he said. Organizers raised $26,000 in vendor fees and sponsors and earned $4,000 at a time when it’s rare to break even on a first-year event. In addition, Main Street Canal Winchester was able to pay the village an impact fee from a vendor sales tax and created a promotional video, which can be viewed at www.bluesandribfest.com. “We weren’t sure what to expect,” Jarvis said See GROUP, page A4

SCHOOL Continued from page A1 close the gap and many Ohio school districts are forecasting 10- to 15-percent cuts in state aid. Even if the levy is approved, the Canal Winchester district still faces a shortage of about $791,000 in the next school year, district officials have said. Brobst said he appreciates the premise of asking for a smaller levy but thinks the district would need to ask for 9 mills in order to make a significant difference
to voters opposed to the levy. “It seems like for what we are giving the residents, there is a tremendous impact to the district,” he said. Yonnotti said the school district has made it very clear to the public that reductions to the budget are planned and will be implemented throughout the whole process. Board President Debra Waites said she supports the 14.78mill request. “The amount is fine in my opinion,” she said. Board members approved the
three-year, 14.78-mill levy request by a 4-1 vote, with Niceswanger voting no. He said afterward he intends to fully support the levy request approved by the board. Miller-Smith said later she will recommend that budget cuts for the 2011-12 school year be made through attrition, reduction of budget items —including those with state-mandated set-asides — and continued implementation of efficiency study strategies. Without the renewal of the present levy, the district will need
to cut $4-million from the budget. That would lead to a loss of 50 employees, she said. “An amount this large can be reduced mainly from staff,” she said. “As a rule of thumb, districts plan 15 employees per $1million.” The board will conduct a special work session at the Education Center, 100 Washington St., at 9 a.m. Feb. 5 to discuss facilities and planning, new curriculum and test requirements and school finances. The public is encouraged to attend.

FIRESTONE Continued from page A1 Store manager Dan Weimer said the new Firestone outlet is a “full-service facilty” that will operate from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Firestone employs nine people, Weimer said. Mattes said two of them moved to Canal Winchester when they heard a new store was opening. Site plans for the service center were approved by the Canal Winchester Planning Commission last February. Village zoning officer Andrew Dutton said Firestone passed its final building inspection Jan. 14 and received a temporary zoning occupancy permit on Jan. 13. “The temporary zoning occupancy was issued for a number
of reasons, mainly that the property needs to be graded to plan, (have new sod) or seeded,” he said. “These issues were anticipated and are typical for construction completed in the winter.” The proposal for an auto care center first came before the planning commission in October 2009 when members voted 4-2 to approve a conditional use for an auto-related business at the site. Mattes said once a site plan is approved, it typically takes the company eight to 10 months to get a store up in running. For the Canal Winchester location, there were some back orders on the garage doors and a delay with a gas line, he said. “We obviously have project managers,” he said. “We have all these other stores. Until they
say, ‘I’m about to give you the keys,’ I don’t get that involved. We were hoping to be open some time in October or November 2010.” Firestone officials previously stated the average number of customers they have at similar Complete Auto Care Centers around the country amounts to about 26 cars per day. Bridgestone, which owns and operates Firestone, is in the midst of a nationwide expansion; the new Canal Winchester facility is part of that expansion. Bridgestone currently operates more than 2,500 locations with more than 33,000 employees. The company’s goal is to open 100 new stores a year as a group, Mattes said.
permitted material for access drives, according to village code. Collier told ThisWeek he was not pleased with council’s decision. “They denied my variance, so I have to remove it,” he said of the carport. “The gravel driveway is not a driveway; it just borders my paved driveway as turnaround space and there are numerous driveways in Canal that are actually gravel and look like crap.” Collier said he is considering selling his home in the spring and moving out of Canal Winchester. He said his property is kept much cleaner than most in the area and the changes he made improved the property value which helps the neighbors, as well. “I did not think I was asking
for anything unreasonable,” he said. “I put the gravel there because that area was nothing but mud and weeds. The gravel has kept the area clean and much nicer looking.”

The planning commission determined that Collier “did not meet his burden in demonstrating a variance should be granted. “Special circumstances or conditions do not exist that are applicable to other lands or structures in the same zoning district,” the report said. OSU grant funds agricultural ALZHEIMER’S CARE economic development plan Regional commission seeks to promote local farmers, food By NATE ELLIS ThisWeek Community Newspapers
County planning officials intend to promote the fruits — and vegetables, plants and livestock — of local farmers’ labor to bolster the regional economy and encourage healthier eating. Half of Fairfield County, more than 175,000 acres, is made up of farmland. That’s a lot of land and, according to the Fairfield County Regional Planning Commission, it represents even greater potential. Backed by the recent receipt of a $5,000 grant from The Ohio State University’s Center for Farmland Policy, the commission will kick off a series of monthly meetings in February to gather information and ideas about the county’s farmers, their produce and livestock. The end result, officials say, will be the creation of an agricultural economic development plan, which will promote local farmers, help generate more sales of their crops and livestock by area restaurants and retailers and, ultimately, kick-start the county’s economy and facilitate healthier diets. “We have 177,000 acres of farmland in Fairfield County, ac-
cording to the 2007 U.S. Census of Agriculture,” said Holly Mattei, executive director of the Fairfield County Regional Planning Commission. “In Ohio, the agriculture industry is a $93-billion industry, and we want to keep some of that money in Fairfield County.” The commission, with the help of the grant, the OSU City and Regional Planning Program, the Fairfield County Economic Development Department and the Fairfield Soil and Water Conservation District, already has formed a committee to examine the county’s farm base and determine how better to ensure its goods are distributed and sold locally by food processors, restaurants and retailers. The committee consists of five Fairfield County farmers, five food processors, five retailers and 15 policy-makers representing agencies such as the Fairfield County Farm Bureau, Fairfield County Department of Job and Family Services and Fairfield County Board of Developmental Disabilities. “Agriculture is Ohio’s No. 1 economy,” said John Torres, organization director of the Fairfield County Farm Bureau. “In a time when we see so much bad news about the state and nation-
al economies, agriculture is still a bright, shining light. “We want to make sure we keep farm families in business so they can help the local and state economies. Fairfield County has some of the best, prime soil in the state of Ohio, and we want to make sure we protect its use.” The first of the committee’s monthly meetings — to be held through June — is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Fairfield County Courthouse. The meeting, as well as subsequent ones, will be open to the public, and Mattei said she hopes Fairfield County farmers and others with ideas for promoting local farming and sales of local food will attend. Through those meetings, the program partners hope to develop a plan that will focus on specific barriers to incorporating local foods into existing business operations. They also will seek to provide policy recommendations for the long-term integration of local foods into county businesses and restaurants to promote sustainable economic growth to support county farmers, Mattei said. “By doing that, I think it will help grow our economic base, help preserve our local farmland and also create a healthy com-
munity by providing local, fresh and nutritious foods to our residents,” she said. “We also want to set up one-on-one meetings with local businesses to understand what their goals are for providing local foods and find out what their barriers are. “This is building upon our 2002 land-use plan that was adopted by the Fairfield County Regional Planning Commission and the Fairfield County commissioners, which focused on strengthening our use and promotion of our farmland.” Following the monthly meetings, the OSU City and Regional Planning Program will write the plan, which will be presented to local farmers, businesses and, potentially, state and federal legislators. Additional information about the development of the plan and participating in the public meetings and planning process can be obtained by calling Mattei at (740) 652-7110. nellis@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekNews.com

Sinus infections can be frequent Frequent sinus infections in children are a common problem, especially for children in daycare settings. The average child can have six to ten upper respiratory tract infections a year that have symptoms including nasal discharge and blockage. Other factors that contribute to frequent sinus infections are environmental allergies, exposure to second-hand smoke, immunodeficiency, congenital craniofacial anomalies and some inherited conditions. Children with lung problems such as asthma and cystic fibrosis often have related sinus problems. Most viral infections will resolve without treatment. A small percentage will progress to bacterial sinusitis that will require antibiotics for treatment. Narrowing or blockage of the nasal passages or sinus openings may increase the chances that a cold will progress to bacterial sinusitis. Often, children may need medication to help treat sinus problems. This could include nasal steroids, nasal saline, mucous-thinning medications called mucolytics, and some allergy medications such as anti-histamines. In a small percentage of children, surgery may be necessary to relieve the blockage and open the sinuses or nasal passages. Prior to any surgery, a thorough work-up is necessary in order to determine the appropriate treatment course. Younger children do not typically need surgery on the sinuses as their sinuses are still developing. Younger children with frequent sinus infections often have their adenoid, a patch of tissue located where the nose and throat join, re-
moved. The adenoid can be a haven for bacteria and can often block the nasal passages. Removing the adenoid is a simple and painless surgery that can be very effective. When the sinus problem CHARLES is more involved than an enELMARAGHY larged adenoid, the sinuses need to be imaged via a special X-ray called a CT scan to investigate the anatomy of the sinuses and determine if the openings of the sinuses are blocked. If sinus openings are blocked, they can be enlarged using special instruments and a small camera called an endoscope. This is called endoscopic sinus surgery. The natural openings are widened and preservation of normal anatomy is the goal. Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Rhinology Clinic is unique in that it offers allergy testing and endoscopic evaluation during the same visit. This allows both the allergist and otolaryngologist to determine an appropriate treatment plan. You should always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health care provider prior to starting or stopping any treatment or with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition.

Tax Series Those affected by late tax breaks can file in mid- to late February WASHINGTON — Following December’s tax law changes, the Internal Revenue Service announced the upcoming tax season will start on time for most people, but taxpayers affected by three recently reinstated deductions need to wait until mid- to late February to file their individual tax returns. In addition, taxpayers who itemize deductions on Form 1040 Schedule A will need to wait until mid- to late February to file as well. The changes in the law mean that the IRS will need to reprogram its processing systems for three provisions that were extended in the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010 that became law on Dec. 17. People claiming any of these three items will need to wait to file their tax returns until tax processing systems are ready, which the IRS estimates will be in mid- to late February. The IRS urged taxpayers to use e-file instead of paper tax forms to minimize confusion over the recent tax changes and ensure accurate tax returns. Taxpayers will need to wait to file if they are within any of the following three categories: • Taxpayers claiming itemized deductions on Schedule A. Itemized deductions include mortgage interest, charitable deductions, medical and dental expenses as well as state and local taxes. In addition, itemized deductions include the state and local general sales tax deduction extended in the tax law change enacted Dec. 17, which primarily benefits people living in areas without state and local income taxes and is claimed on Schedule A, Line 5. Because of late Congressional action to enact tax law changes, anyone who itemizes and files a Schedule A will need to wait to file until mid- to late February. • Taxpayers claiming the Higher Education Tuition and Fees Deduction. This deduction for parents and students — covering up to $4,000 of tuition and fees paid to a post-secondary institution — is claimed on Form 8917. However, the IRS emphasized that there will be no delays for millions of parents and students who claim other education credits, including the American Opportunity Tax Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit. • Taxpayers claiming the Educator Expense Deduction. This deduction is for kindergarten through grade 12 educators with out-of-pocket classroom expenses of up to $250. The educator expense deduction is claimed on Form 1040, Line 23, and Form 1040A, Line 16

all levels of entertainment There are many ways to learn about a place and its past. I have always had the strong suspicion that how people entertain themselves can tell us a lot about who they were and what was important to them. With that as both an explainer and probably a bit of a warning, let’s take a look at how Columbus ED amused itself in its first few LENTZ decades. The small frontier community pretty much entertained itself in the first few years after it was founded in 1812. Carving a village out of a forest was not all that easy and the War of 1812 meant that most people did not have leisure time. The time they did have was often occupied with family and visits to close friends nearby. After the Ohio General Assembly began to meet in Columbus in 1816, there was a decided increase in the number of taverns in town and in the number of people frequenting them — much to the chagrin of local ministers and the temperance advocates in their congregations. To understand early public entertainment in Columbus, it is important to remember that, then as now, there were several different “arts communities” in the capital city. Some of the early residents were quite well-educated and sorely missed the music, drama and literary world they had left behind. Several of these people formed what came to be called “the first musical organization in Columbus.” The Handel Society apparently performed for the assembled multitude on the occasion of Independence Day in 1821 and 1822, and according to an account from that time, performed with “a superior degree of elegance.” How the singing of Handel’s work went over with the frontier folk who had never heard of him or his music was probably summed up with, “Handel was handled quite well” or something similar. For the rest of Columbus, there were military organizations with their fifes and drums and the occasional entertainment of an itinerant musician. But there was not much else — until 1827. On April 21, 1827, Tippo Sultan, the Great Hunting Elephant, came to town. Tippo was accompanied, according to a local poster, by “The Mammoth Lion, Tiger, Cat, Lynx, Shetland Pony, Dandy Jack, etc. etc. The above named animals will be seen at Mr. Russell’s tavern, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the 27th, 28th and 29th inst. The exhibition will be
accompanied by good music. Admittance 25 cents — children under 12 years of age half price.” Presumably, Mr. Russell felt his tavern would benefit from Tippo and his friends. It did not work out that way, as a local history recalls: “At night, the ‘hunting elephant’ was locked up in the tavern backyard where, during one of the nights of his sojourn, he broke loose, and for a time amused himself by pumping water at the well. Finally he broke the pump handle and looking around for some new pastime, spied two barrels of flour standing on the back porch. Breaking into these, he, for a while, ate flour and drank water alternately until he converted the residue of the flour into paste. “Awakened by the noise, Mr. Russell descended and was received by the elephant with a fusillade of dough. Beating a retreat, the discomfited host aroused the keeper of the frolicsome beast, who, after some effort, succeeded in getting him tied again.” As a counterpoint of Tippo Sultan and his friends, the more elevated culture group in town welcomed a “Mr. and Mrs. Harper” who, with a few friends and associates , were happy to perform Oliver Goldsmith’s classic play, “She Stoops to Conquer” for any who cared to come and pay to see it. Apparently, a number of people did, since the play was performed in the only place big enough to hold them — the public market building at State and High streets. Presumably, the live chickens, pigs and cows who occupied various stalls in the market were removed for the evening. The clash between “high culture” and, shall we say, “not-sohigh culture” continued apace. In 1833, one Rufus Beach organized the Franklin Harmonic Society, looking to improve “the vocal and

instrumental music” of the city. Soon, S. Butler and Company came to Columbus with a menagerie that included “the great hunting or war elephant, Hannibal.” Apparently Columbus really liked elephants in those days. By 1835, Columbus had become a city of more than 5,000 people. The rapid growth in size and influence of Columbus evidently convinced enough investors to permit the construction of the first real theatre in the city. Built of wood, the Columbus Theatre stood on the west side of High Street just a few hundred feet north of Long Street, where the Brunson Building is today. Over the next several years, the theatre saw performances of classic plays, including Shakespeare and such titles as “St. George and the Dragon,” “Mazeppa” and “The Cataract of the Ganges.” For the less refined, the Columbus Theatre was also the home of Miss Honey, a “danseuse.” Of Miss Honey, a local paper reported, “Her most piquant dances were frequently followed by a shower of silver quarters.” It was also reported that “Miss Honey had considerable talent as an actress, and in whatever part she took evoked applause.” In later years, it was noted that “towards the end of 1841, the Columbus Theatre seems to have degenerated both financially and morally, and its evil influence upon the young people of the city, resulting particularly from its ‘bar’ for the sale of intoxicants, was loudly complained of.” The clash of culture between “legitimate” and not-so-legitimate entertainment would continue for much of the rest of the history of the city — and for that matter, down to our own time as well.
of the Blues and Ribfest. “We were trying to follow in the footsteps of some of the things we have done for Labor Day. There were some things that were completely new and we had to start from scratch.” The work over a seven-month period was pretty intensive and Main Street didn’t start the event with any seed money, Jarvis said. But all the hard work paid off, he said: The Ribfest received a lot of press and helped draw a lot of new people to Canal Winchester, he said. Work has already started on next year’s event, Jarvis said. The village has agreed to allow organizers to expand into a much larger area at the intersection of High and Waterloo streets. Children’s activities will be expanded and run throughout the event, Jarvis said. “We were very limited on funds,” he said of the 2010 jazz and ribfest. “We did what we could. We will be adding more ribbers and more food vendors. We are hoping we can keep food flying and the lines from becoming really excessive.” Main Street Canal Winchester was able to secure $37,400 in grants last year and started a fall farmers market, he said. Jarvis said some of the grant money “was from the Ohio Department of Agriculture and some from a program run by the Franklin County Arts Council.” The organization also received $1,500 from the Department of Agriculture and $2,000 from the Franklin County Neighborhood Arts Council to support the Blues and Ribfest. Main Street also made some changes to its farmers market, expanding the season and consolidating the vendors downtown in the Stradley Place area.
“It was a great event,” Jarvis said. “We ran it a little differently and broke it into a fall and summer edition. I’m not sure that we will do that again in 2011.” Dividing the farmers market seemed to decrease the number of vendors and customers by fall, he said, noting it is a challenge to accommodate farmers with early spring harvests and those with fall items. “Trying to keep everyone happy without having a market that never ends is the trick,” he said. “We will be looking at that and maybe need to start a little later … maybe end just a little earlier.” In September, Main Street Canal Winchester purchased a 1937 GMC truck to serve as a rolling billboard for events like Christmas in the Village, the Fall Harvest Market and the Ribfest. “That was the result of an idea that was brought up before Main Street probably eight years ago,” Jarvis said. “For various reasons, it was never possible to do it. This year seemed to be the right time to make that kind of an acquisition. We are thrilled to have it.” Jarvis said he is also thankful for the volunteer support the organization received, without which Main Street Canal Winchester would not be able to function. He also credited the village, Canal Winchester Village Council and the Main Street Canal Winchester board for their part in 2010 successes. “My board is a great group of people,” he said. “They are extremely helpful. I tip my hat to the mayor and village council. While it looks like we accomplished a lot of things, it was not done as an island. “This time of year is a good time to stop and think about your plans for next year but also look back and take stock on what you did accomplish,” he said.

Hutchins pins way to success on mat By AARON BLANKENSHIP ThisWeek Community Newspapers

During Canal Winchester High School senior Brady Hutchins’ wrestling matches, opposing coaches often remind their athletes to watch out for his half nelson pinning combination. Despite those words of warning, Hutchins has continued to use the half nelson to pin the majority of his opponents over the past four seasons. Hutchins has a 137-34 overall record with 99 pins, which places him in a tie for 30th with three other wrestlers for most careers pins in Ohio. “There’s no secret as to what Brady is best at,” said his father, Kris Hutchins, the team’s statistician. “Other wrestlers have these complicated moves, but Brady uses the most basic move in wrestling, and that’s how he’s gotten about 90 percent of his pins. We hear coaches yelling, ‘Watch out for his half nelson,’ all the time, but it’s one thing to know it’s coming and another thing to stop it.” Coach Trent Brooks said Brady Hutchins gets so many pins because he has superior technique and is stronger than most wrestlers in his 125-pound weight class. “Everybody knows what Brady’s doing, but he’s so strong and good at it, that he’s unstoppable once he’s on top,” Brooks said. “He has a killer instinct when it comes to pinning people. ‘Tradition factor’ in OHSAA division proposal unfair It’s not hard to imagine the confrontational feelings that were created when the OHSAA released a statement Jan. 13 announcing that it was tackling the seemingly age-old debate regarding competitive balance among the state’s public and private schools. The proposed referendum, to be voted on by OHSAA member schools in May, initially would reset divisional alignments in football, baseball, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, girls volleyball and softball based on a school’s sport-by-sport “athletic count.” That figure would be calculated using mathematical factors that take into account economics, school enrollment policies and tradition. On one side of the debate are pub-
lic schools that won only eight of the 27 state team titles — one of six in football — that the OHSAA awarded during the 2010 fall season. Many in the private-school camp, JARROD meanwhile, are left ULREY to wonder whether rules changes, which seemingly would bump them into larger divisions, are fair. There are many reasons for the disproportionate number of titles won by private schools, but the primary one is that some of those schools can assemble virtual all-star teams from fiveand six-county areas.
With that in mind, it does seem reasonable for the OHSAA to visit the issue of boundaries when determining the divisions for private schools, and some large public schools. The biggest problem I have is with the “tradition factor” that would increase a school’s “athletic count.” The OHSAA says this aspect would be determined by “state championship game appearances, state tournament appearances and regional finals appearances.” The implication of this sounds more like a step toward eventually giving participation medals to everyone as opposed to rewarding the best of the best. Few people want to see Delphos St. John’s beat Shadyside 77-6 for the
Division VI state football title, and having Youngstown Ursuline win three consecutive Division V state championships is less than ideal when talking about keeping the field balanced. The problem is that if the OHSAA moves St. John’s up to Division V and Ursuline to Division IV, the same problems will persist, but with different teams. If Hartley would have been in Division III instead of Division IV last fall, it would have been a strong candidate to win that title instead because Watterson, according to the proposed plan, likely would have been in Division II instead of Division III. Schools that could end up getting hurt unintentionally by a change are the Division I public schools.
A perennial central Ohio football power such as Hilliard Davidson not only has to overcome fellow area public-school powers such as Pickerington Central and Dublin Coffman, but a team such as Cincinnati St. Xavier, which has 1,171 boys, could be looming later in the playoffs. The new formula potentially also would move state powers such as Mentor Lake Catholic and Toledo Central Catholic into Division I, making a tough field even tougher. Some have suggested separating into private-school and public-school tournaments, but that only would hurt the spirit of competition that should exist when determining the state’s See ULREY, page A6

INDIANS games. But Hutchins, an avid video game player and Eagle Scout, said he has unfinished business to attend to in the postseason before he turns his full attention to academics. The three-time district qualifier is looking to end his career on the state tournament podium, after going 1-2 in the Division II state tournament each of the previous two seasons. “I really want to do well in the state tournament,” Hutchins said. “If I make it back there and wrestle well, I think I’ve got the potential to make it to the semifinals or the finals, because I’ve improved on my feet and I’m more comfortable going for takedowns. It’s just going to come down to how well I wrestle in the (postseason) tournaments.”

Hutchins earned possibly the most impressive win of his career in a semifinal of the Marion Elgin Invitational on Jan. 15, when he pinned Chagrin Falls Kenston’s Tre Smith in 3:25. In the InterMat preseason rankings, Smith was rated first at 125 in Division II. “Brady’s gotten a lot better on his feet this year, and that’s made him a lot more competitive against the better wrestlers,” Brooks said. “(Smith) is the predicted Division II state champion and he beat Brady 15-6 last year, but Brady was in control of the match the entire time. Brady’s a lot more confident and steady this year.” Hutchins, who carries a 4.0 cumulative gradepoint average and scored a 32 on his ACT exam, doesn’t plan to wrestle in college. best. Is there an obvious solution to the issue? Not exactly, but it doesn’t seem like radical change is necessary. Tradition should be kept out of the equation. Teams like De-
Sales and Watterson have earned their success by creating programs that teach winning football. This shouldn’t be penalized, but emulated by other programs. Keeping in mind the boundary issues, the OHSAA should choose to tweak, rather than re-

New Salvi’s Bistro serves popular old favorites If you’re a fan of well-made Italian-American comfort food served in absurdly generous portions and sold at very fair prices, then you might know about Salvi’s. Better than any national chain in the same hospitality game, the locally grown Salvi’s has been pleasing Columbusites in different guises for more than four decades. Once dotting the city with popular eateries, Salvi’s legacy was down to its last outpost in Hilliard until recently. Open since early November, the latest Salvi’s venture replaces a Dublin space formerly occupied by an upscale steakhouse chain called Stony Ridge. This new Salvi’s is a casually handsome place in a predominantly polished dark-brown wood, lodge-like fashion. Open and roomy, it includes a duskily lit and comfy bar in its handful of dining areas. It’s fre-

Taco vendor settles into permanent location on Northwest Side Carlos Nonato is part of the vibrant taco-truck culture on the West Side. The business, understandably, is weather dependent. And, naturally, the elements take their toll on even the sturdiest of operators, he said. “Outside is hard – the cold, rain,” he said. And while he’s not trading in his mobile stand on Sullivant Avenue, Nonato has opened a permanent restaurant, Taqueria Los Gauchos, at 5221 Godown Road on the Northwest Side. The laidback eatery offers counter-order service. Alcohol is not sold.
The main attraction is the al pastor – thinly sliced pork piled on a skewer and cooked on a vertical rotisserie. The pork is sliced and quickly grilled. In the Mexican tradition, it is placed on a corn tortilla (flour is another option) with cilantro and chopped onion. There are other taco fillings, as well as other entrée choices, such as burritos, quesadillas, fajitas and such. Of course, house-made salsa is served on the side. Nonato said he doesn’t hold back the heat with his signature choice, made of habanero peppers. Even the next level, salsa rojo, is spicy, while the guacamole is mild. Taqueria Los Gauchos (pronounced wah-chos), is open for lunch and dinner daily. For more information, call 614538-0211.

community, Miller said the recipe is the same but the topping options have expanded to include bacon, ham, pineapple, jalapenos and such, plus the addition of white-sauce pizzas. Miller bought the Flying Pizza on OSU campus two years ago from Joe Graci, who retired. Graci’s son, Sal, ran the Bethel Center location until the recent sale. Frank Graci, a relative and owner of the original store in Dayton, is Miller’s partner in the Bethel store. Miller said he made the quarter finals in the trick-pizza-tossing competition on America’s Got Talent and participates at annual conventions in Las Vegas and Italy. Flying Pizza is known for its thin- and thickcrust pies and by-the-slice options. The lunch special, two slices of cheese and a 16-ounce pop for $5 ($5.50 for pepperoni), remains. Miller said he has resisted the urge to put more than pizza on the menu. “We do one thing and do it right,” he said. For more information, call 614-457-2323. Craig Barnum is no longer part of Historic Dublin Restaurants but still has a restaurant in Historic Dublin. The partnership of Barnum, Mike Tibbetts and Jack Eggpuehler launched a trio of restaurants — Oscar’s, Tucci’s and Brazenhead — in Dublin’s town center. Barnum called the split amicable. “I think everyone realized it was time to move on,” said Barnum, who still owns Tucci’s under CLB Restaurants. Gift cards purchased before the split will be honored by each restaurant, he said. The arrangement started in 1995, when Oscar’s opened. It was followed by Tucci’s and Brazen-
head three years later. Since then, all three partners expanded the Brazenhead concept and tried their hands with different restaurants. Barnum and Tibbetts opened a steakhouse in the Polaris area that has since closed. Tibbetts also opened Cabo Cocina and Barnum founded Matt the Miller’s in Dublin. Another is set to open this spring on Grandview Avenue. Meanwhile, Eggspuehler branched out with the Adena’s and Buck Mulligan’s, both of which are no longer in business. “Really the last couple years, everyone naturally had different goals and desires and so forth,” Barnum said. “We did a lot of great things together,” Tibbetts added. “I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything but I understand people take different directions.”
