2013 was a year of growing, giving and paying forward

In just 12 months, the Grandview Area Chamber moved its office space, added new programs, and called upon its members to give their time, talents and resources. Last January, after many years of being located on Grandview Avenue, the Chamber moved it’s offices to 2015 W. 5th Avenue in Marble Cliff. According to Michelle Wilson, Executive Director of the Chamber, the move came about due to outgrowing the space they were in. “We knew we would miss being on Grandview Avenue, but we were growing and simply needed more storage and meeting space.” March brought the first annual Chamber Scholarship Event, The Spring Cha-Ching, held at the Hollywood Casino. The establishment of this event is to raise funds for the Chamber’s Gregory A. Kidwell Scholarship Fund, benefitting GHHS seniors offset their college expenses; and the Joelle M. Khouzam Workforce Development Fund. A fund that will help Chamber businesses offset costs of hiring high school students who would like to receive practical experience in different industries as they decide on career choices. With the onset of this fund, the Chamber was fortunate to collaborate with Tony Thivener, Career Specialist at Grandview Heights High School, on a new speaker series. Each month, several business owners and executives address the entire student body to make them aware of the industry we have right in our own community, and invite the students to learn more by contacting them directly. So far they’ve heard from authors, autobody experts, HR professionals, audio/video specialists and attorneys. The rest of the year was highlighted
New year, new look
by our monthly speakers, who enlightened us on local organizations whose purpose is to make the lives of others a bit less painful or stressful. We heard from Miguel Perez in May who spoke to us about turning your personal passion into a working reality. See 2013 on page 7
