The Delaware County 911 Board on Jan. 12 voted to recommend that a tax levy be put on the May ballot. The recommendation will go to the county commissioners for formal action. The board recommended a five-year, 0.75-mill levy. It would replace the current 0.45-mill levy that will expire on Dec. 31. Voters in November rejected a fiveyear, 0.62-mill levy 26,750-20,590. That issue was designed to overlap with the current levy for a year, to help fund initial capital investment. Bob Greenlaw, director of county emergency communications, blamed voter confusion for the November failure, when three tax levies failed in the county, including the 911 levy, the city of Powell income tax levy and an Orange Township police levy. “The true first responders are the telecommunicators that answer your 911 calls,” Greenlaw said. “It is imperative to all Delaware County residents that we maintain and update this vital public safety link and provide citizens with quick and effective service.” A 7.5-mill levy would raise about $3.9 million annually. It would cost the owner of a $200,000 house $45.94 annually, beginning in 2012. The current levy costs about $26 a year. “This levy supports all public safety communications in Delaware County,” Greenlaw said. “Out of Sept. 11, 2001, when the New York City police department and fire departments had problems because they could not talk to each other on the radio. After that, the state of Ohio put millions of dollars into interoperable radio, and this county was at the forefront of that. If this were to not get funded and it had to be funded instead by the individual entities, then those who could not afford in any given year to do an upgrade would have to drop out. That would put us in reverse.” The county has for several years been developing a centralized 911 service, reaching an agreement in 2010 with the city of Delaware for previous year cost sharing. Greenlaw said having a single service for all jurisdictions in the county costs less than separate 911 systems See 911, page A5

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream junior ambassador Rechelle Frash, left, takes the order of Bo Tarpoff and 7-year-old Antonia Tarpoff and 7-year-old Ashton Hart during their visit to the store at the corner of Olentangy and North Liberty street on Saturday, Jan. 15. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream introduced its new seasonal flavors last week.

Powell’s reaction to its new Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams shop “absolutely shattered all of our expectations,” the business’ co-founder said. Jeni Britton Bauer said, “We thought we were getting too much space and we’re so happy we have it because we would have been cramming people in there if we had a smaller place.” The store opened in November at 8 N. Liberty St. “We are thrilled with the reception of the community. I’m getting e-mails from young people telling me what their favorite flavors are,” Bauer said. “I used to think of Powell as being really far away from Columbus, and now I feel like it’s really close and it’s such a thriving, vibrant, wonderful community. “We’ve been floored at the community response and not just from all the customers but the local businesses, too. We’ve had a great response from everyone.” Jeni’s operates seven Columbus-area shops. The others are in Bexley, Clintonville, Dublin, Grandview, the Short North and the North Market. The family owned and operated company ships its products to retailers in 29 states. The business got its start in Bauer’s kitchen. In 1996, she was a student at Ohio State University and an employee at a pastry shop. “I was working at a French pastry shop, studying art and art history at Ohio State and thinking about pastry school,” Bauer said. “I started making pastries at home — blending French techniques See JENI’S, page A2

Powell’s employee wages mid-range By BONNIE BUTCHER ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Powell employee salaries are about mid-range, according to an annual survey performed by the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission. The commission’s most recent “Comprehensive Salary and Fringe Benefit Survey” breaks down wages by job title and description for various villages, cities and townships. The survey reflects data from 2009 wages and benefits. The MORPC survey provides pay ranges for the various job titles, provided by each of the 31 governments that responded to the survey, including Bexley, Delaware County, New Albany, Westerville and Worthington. It also provides the average pay for job title the entities paid in 2009.

The respondents varied in their number of employees, with Canal Winchester on the smaller side with fewer than 50 and Columbus the largest with more than 5,000 employees. Powell has 54.5 employees. Powell provided data for 23 full-time

employees, although data for the city manager position is not listed and two of the titles do not show a starting pay, just the highest possible pay for the position. Powell’s lowest-paying positions are the secretary-clerk positions and permit coordinator, all with a pay range of $28,109 to $51,111. In the survey, Powell’s secretary/clerk position has the highest top-end salary among the respondents, but that position carries more responsibilities than those listed in MORPC’s job description. Powell has four employees in secretary-clerk category. The average salary is in the low-end of the city’s range, at $35,000. Though no data was provided for the MORPC survey, city documents show

the city manager’s 2009 salary to be about $117,000. The other governments surveyed with a similar position show the lowest starting pay at $84,198 and the highest at $180,000. For supervisor-assistant city engineer, Powell’s pay range was $54,320 to $72,079, one of the highest pay ranges for that job title among the respondents, whose lowest wage was $37,669. The responsibilities for the Powell position also are greater than the MORPC survey description. Powell’s police officers are at the top of the city’s $44,302 to $64,046 pay range, with the average pay at $64,043, excluding overtime. Overtime pay is listed in the MORPC survey. Many of the ice creams’ ingredients, including the cream and milk, are grown and produced in Ohio. “We use the exquisite cream from Snowville Creamery (in Pomeroy, Ohio), “Bauer said. The dairy cows are pasturegrazed and only grass-fed, Bauer said. “The cream has a wonderful old-fashioned true cream flavor,” she said. Everything is done by hand, not only in the kitchen, but also in the stores’ decorations and design. “Right now we have sweet potato ice cream with torched marshmallows,” she said. “We make the marshmallows, cut them all up and use a blow torch to torch

Walmart case

U.S. Supreme Court won’t hear appeal By BONNIE BUTCHER ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Liberty Township lost its last chance to appeal its federal court loss to developers who tried to build a Walmart store in the township. The U.S. Supreme Court on Jan. 18 denied Liberty Township’s request for a hearing. In October, township trustees sought an appeal of the Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals’majority decision that favored Wedgewood Limited Partnership in its lawsuit against Liberty Township. The appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court was the township’s last option in trying

to overturn U.S. District Court judge Algenon Marbley’s 2008 ruling that the township violated Wedgewood’s constitutional right to due process regarding a proposed 220,598-square-foot Walmart Superstore. The 34-acre site at 10600 Sawmill Parkway is in Wedgewood Commerce Center. Wedgewood was the developer. “All of the issues have now been decided against the township and the decisions are final,” said Wedgewood attorney Bruce Ingram. “Attorneys’fees and costs to be awarded to Wedgewood are all that’s pending. The seven-year odyssey is coming to an end. The township spent

millions of dollars denying Wedgewood its civil rights. Now it will be compensating the victim, Wedgewood, for its losses and attorneys’ fees.” Liberty Township trustee Robert Mann said, “On advice of counsel, we cannot comment until all proceedings are completed, and there are still matters pending before judge Marbley.” In December, a U.S. District Court jury trial to determine the damages resulted in a unanimous $750,000 compensatory judgment against Liberty Township. The township must pay that amount in damages to Wedgewood Limited Partnership, the jury ruled.

Still to be decided is how much Liberty will pay in legal fees and costs. Marbley will decide those costs at a later date. Documents Wedgewood filed in October with the U.S. District Court show a request for $1.7-million to cover the partnership’s attorney fees, court costs and interest on both. Township trustees updated the township’s liability insurance in 2009, increasing the coverage to about $8-million. Liability coverage previously was about $5-million. The insurance has paid for a portion of the township’s legal fees in the federal Walmart lawsuit. The township and insurance provider

attorneys need to determine what will be covered in the damages and legal fees to Wedgewood. The township would be responsible for the rest. The case dates to 2004 when the township denied Wedgewood a zoning permit for a Walmart. Soon after, Wedgewood president Charles Ruma filed the federal lawsuit. Marbley ruled the civil rights violation occurred when township trustees on Jan. 19, 2004, issued a public statement saying there was a 500,000-square-foot limit — called a “floating cap” — on commercial development in the commerce center.

OEF casino fundraiser scheduled for Feb. 5 By BONNIE BUTCHER ThisWeek Community Newspapers

The Olentangy Education Foundation will hold its “Spirit of Olentangy Casino Night” fundraiser from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Bridgewater Banquet and Conference Center, 10561 Sawmill Parkway, Powell. In its third year, the event is one of the two fundraisers for the all-volunteer nonprofit organization that provides grants and scholarships for Olentangy teachers and senior students, respectively. The evening includes such games as black jack, roulette, craps and Texas hold’em; entertainment by country-rock band County Line Junction; and appetizers, including stuffed mush-

rooms, chicken wings, cheese, crudités and petits fours for dessert. “It’s a great time. Everybody has fun. Parents, administrators and teachers are there. It’s a fun night with a lot of people that you know,” said event chair Kim Hollingshead. OEF also will hold live and silent auctions of such items as Cleveland Cavaliers tickets, Brighton jewelry, Vera Bradley items, logo wear from the schools, Longaberger baskets, certificates for SAT/ACT tutoring from College Nannies and various gift certificates. The live auction will include a week at a condo in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and a week on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. “Last year, over 200 attended

Of the 23 job titles for which Powell provided data, the average pay was on the low end of the range for seven positions; the average pay for nine of the positions was near the middle of the pay range and average pay for seven of the positions was at the high-end of the pay range. Employee pay and benefits make up about 70-percent of Powell’s general fund expenditures. Powell city council member Sara Marie Brenner has said the city might be able to save money outsourcing some of its services. At the upcoming citizens’budget advisory group, Brenner said she will examine the pros and cons of contracting for city serv-

ices and/or consolidating services with other area governments. The group was formed to discuss ways the city could pay for capital improvements, such as roads, sewers and sidewalks. Three out of four voters rejected a Nov. 2 income tax increase that was slated for capital improvements. Brenner and residents who are members of “Friends of Powell” group that opposed the tax increase said the city should look at cutting expenses and other revenue sources to pay for such improvements. The meeting is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, in council chambers, 47 Hall St. The MORPC study is available at www.morpc.org under the “Studies and Plans” link. Have You Heard? by Greg VanHorssen CAN FOLATE PREVENT HEARING LOSS? The latest study providing evidence that low blood levels of B vitamins (most notably folate) are linked with age-related hearing loss involves a study of nearly 3,000 adults over age 50. When their blood levels of folate, vitamin B12, and homocysteine were compared with their incidence of hearing loss, it was found that those with the lowest levels of folate were 39% more likely to suffer hearing loss. People with the most homocysteine (an amino acid, which folate has been shown to lower in the body) were at 64% greater risk. Researchers suspect that homocysteine is the culprit because it may adversely affect blood flow to the cochlea (the spiral cavity of the inner ear), leading to age-related hearing loss. Research and technology are constantly on the move toward innovative ideas and products to bring back the sounds of life to the hearing impaired. The folate link with age-related hearing loss mentioned above is a perfect examples of this. To each his or her own life rules Sleeping in a cool room is widely considered a good idea. In fact, lowering the temperature in the bedroom is one of those life rules, like washing apples before you eat them and brushing your teeth up and down instead of sideways. “Sleep in a cool, dark place.” I read that whenever I come across magazine articles about insomnia, which I tend to do in doctors’ waiting rooms. I never buy magazines, so the only place I ever get to read them is when I’m waiting my turn to be weighed, measured and, if necessary, repaired. It’s appropriate to read self-improvement tracts at that time, don’t you think? I rarely leave a medical waiting area without feeling, if not transformed, then at least straightened out in some small but significant way. “Park in the back of the parking lot,” for instance. That was a good one, a true keeper. I’ve been parking in the back for years now, walking thousands if not millions of extra steps, all thanks to some long-forgotten ailment that put me in touch with the necessary information. “Eat tomatoes with your spinach.” Another excellent suggestion. The details — something about how tomatoes help a person absorb the iron in the spinach — almost entirely escape me, but that won’t matter until I’m asked about it on “Jeopardy!” (“Spinach contains both this mineral and an inhibitor that impedes its absorption.”) Oh, I hope I get the chance to make it a true daily double when I’m asked this question. But to return to my point, which has been waiting patiently: The rule “Sleep in a cool dark place” is almost universally deemed to be healthy, sensible and easily put into practice. Or wait. Should that be “Keep in a cool dark place,” meaning potatoes? Well, no matter. Both are splendid guidelines. Who would disagree? Plenty, as it turns out. In discussions about this habit my husband has come up against dissension, and as for me, I can only say that my remarks about sleeping temperatures have been met with shock, horror and outright squeals of disapproval. It’s not that people don’t go along with the general idea. It’s that they think we’ve gone overboard. We’ve taken it too far; we’ve wandered into the dangerous territory of extremism. Let me just put it out there: The temperature in our bedroom last night was 51 degrees. That doesn’t seem so cold to me. It was 51, not 15. The winds were calm. Had the gales been whipping up whitecaps in our

water glasses, we might have become concerned enough to put on our slickers and tie down the dog before we MARGO turned in. That wasn’t BARTLETT necessary, however. It was cool — all right, it was chilly — but we’re accustomed to cool or even chilly. We have a down comforter. We have flannel sheets. We even have a thermostat, though as you may have deduced, we use it sparingly. I for one like sleeping in a 51degree bedroom. It can be cold at first; I don’t deny that. It’s a rare evening that I retire without thinking about Laura Ingalls Wilder, who grew up in the late 19th century and often woke to find snow piled on her bed quilt. The snow came in through cracks in the roof over the heads of Laura and her sister Mary, both of whom gained lifelong stamina and a deep appreciation of nature thanks to their hardy childhoods. That’s what I’d like to gain, too: stamina and appreciation. I’ve already gained long, deep sleeps full of the most crazy dreams you ever heard. Why, just last night I dreamed — but you don’t want to hear that. You want to hear why on earth we keep the bedroom that cold. I’ll tell you: A, it’s good for you and B, it keeps our heating

bill low, or at least as low as heating bills get these days. We do feel sorry for the dog, who isn’t allowed on the bed, but I’ve been told that I shouldn’t worry about rabbits and deer and other outdoor animals, and I figure that reassurance extends to indoor creatures as well. The other day my husband was talking about bedroom temperatures with his colleagues. They all agreed that cool bedrooms are best, and then my husband mentioned the previous night’s high in our room: a balmy 52 degrees. Dead silence followed his remarks. Then a co-worker spoke. “That’s not cool,” he said. “That’s camping.” I thought about this after my husband told me this story, and I’ve concluded that the co-worker is right, more or less. Sleeping in a 50-some-degree room is indeed camping, or a form of it. It’s camping without wrestling with tent poles, missing stakes, untidy public showers or drunken singing from the tent next door. It’s listening to the rain patter on the roof without having to hang our bedding out to dry in the morning. It’s breakfast without involving a Coleman stove. It’s everything good. Olentangy picks 7.9 mills for levy Continued from page A1 overall decline in property values. “The levy scenario continued to be modified. I got more comfortable with it (the 7.9 mills),” O’Brien said after the meeting. “Ultimately, the voters are going to decide.” Administrators and most other board members had pushed for 7.9 mills, saying academic programs would be spared from cuts if the levy is passed. Galloway had said last month that he thinks 6.9 mills would be enough to maintain

programs. Julie WagnerFeasel, who was reelected board president on Jan. 12, said after the meeting she was pleased a 7.9mill levy. “Now we can Julie move forward and Wagner-Feasel concentrate on getting the levy passed.” she said. A 7.9-mill levy, if approved in May, would raise an estimated $24-million

annually and cost the owner of a $100,000 home an additional $241.94 a year. The bond issue would require no new millage because the district would restructure its bond debt. The bond issue would raise about $24.4-million and pay to build a new elementary school and other things, including new textbooks and some capital improvements projects. Also on Jan. 12, the board unanimously named King as vice president for one year.

The board also approved the resignation of Jeffrey R. Brown, executive director of elementary learning, effective Jan. 31. Brown, who earned about $140,000 a year in salary and benefits, is leaving to become superintendent of Granville schools in Licking County. Olentangy superintendent Wade Lucas praised Brown for his 10 years with the district in which Brown has been a principal and also filled in as an interim superintendent. “He’s been ready to be a superin-

tendent and will do a great job,” Lucas said. Brown’s position likely will not be filled, Lucas said outside the meeting. He plans to have Wade Lucas assistant superintendent Linda Martin and curriculum director Pam Bachman share those duties. Not filling the position will help save money, Lucas said.

County sets hearing on block grant program ThisWeek Community Newspapers

The Delaware County commissioners on Jan. 10 set a hearing for Feb. 14 to discuss the county’s 2011 community development block grant funds that are awarded from the federal government and administered by the Ohio Department of Development. Commissioner Ken O’Brien voted again-st the hearing, saying he objected to some of the projects proposed for grants. He did not identify them. “I am in support of Ken some of these and not of O’Brien others,” O’Brien said. County economic development coordinator Dottie Brown said the Feb. 14 hearing will be a general session about the community development block grant program to discuss applications and potential funding. Another hearing will be scheduled later for individual applications. The grant money includes funds originally designated for a revolving loan fund

for businesses. If no businesses seek the loans, the money can be used for grants if the county and the Ohio Department of Development approve the applications. The loan fund contained more than $1million several years ago. Brown and the commissioners discussed a dozen projects that are pending and went through the grant application process in 2009 and 2010. They include $184,709 for Central Ohio Mental Health and Rehabilitation, $150,000 to the Strand Theatre, $125,000 to renovations in county parks to meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, $75,000 for ADA renovations at Andrews House, and $40,000 for a study at the Interstate 71 interchange with U.S. Route 36 and state Route 37. Six other grants ranged from $5,500 to $25,000. Commissioners discussed if any of the pending projects are at risk for using grant funding this year. “I’ve never had them come back and say no after (the county and state) approved it, to take the money back and say no you can’t do it,” Brown said. “But we’ve never had a situation like the one we have (now),” said commissioner Dennis Stapleton, noting the change in the

state’s administration and uncertainties in state funding. Assistant prosecutor Aric Hochstettler said some of the approved projects are subject to contractual obligations Dennis that could limit the abili- Stapleton ty to make changes. “All (block grant funding) comes out of the (state of Ohio) economic development department,” Brown said. “They could change it and say, ‘No, we don’t have any money,’ and we won’t know that until later in the year. We usually get a letter stating what’s available and what you can apply for.” Commissioner Tommy Thompson said if the county doesn’t use the grant money, the state will “send this money to some other area of the state. They’ll take it back. Whether we totally agree Tommy or not, I’d rather see the Thompson money spent in Delaware County.”

Relay for Life of Olentangy is preparing for its 2011 relay event, to be held from Friday, May 20 to Saturday, May 21 at Olentangy High School, 675 Lewis Center Road. The Olentangy group hopes to raise $84,000 this year. So far,

donations total $2,292.20. At each relay, teams of participants walk or run the track to raise money for the American Cancer Society. A survivors’lap is a traditional part of the annual event, as are the luminaries which light the stadium. Fundraising events lead up to the culminating relay.

Cumin Indian Restaurant a fine replacement for Bayleaf When I heard Bayleaf was going out of business, I grimaced. The Polaris-area restaurant was one of my favorite places for Indian food. But when I heard the Cuisine of India people were taking over, I cheered up. You see, like Bayleaf, Cuisine of India is modern and authentic, serving both beloved classics and lots of contemporary-style dishes popular in cosmopolitan Indian cities. So when I waltzed into Cumin Indian Restaurant my expectations were pretty high. After a few visits, I realized this newbie was destined to shoot to the top of my Indian food list. Other than closing off the formerly open kitchen, Cumin’s owners haven’t performed any drastic cosmetic makeovers. It’s still a big, modern, open and airy room with few, if pleasant, decorations (chiefly multi-hued, saucer-shaped chandeliers) to distract visitors from

by G.A. Benton the task at hand — masticating on fabulously flavored chow. While buffets aren’t usually my thing, Cumin’s is, especially on weekends. That’s when the chaat station gets cranking, and I’m an inveterate fan of chaat. If you’ve never had them, chaats are Indian street-sold snacks that are meat-free riots of bold condiments, wild flavors and manifold textures. Fortunately, this generalization held true on a recent — and blissfully lengthy — lunchtime stopover at Cumin’s great buffet. In front of a longish line and manning a mammoth round pan, the buffet’s chaat guy began with a crispy puck of a potato pancake. To that he added a scoop of soupy,

highly seasoned chickpeas. Then came the garnishing : tart yogurt; chutneys of coriander (spicy) and tamarind (sweet); diced raw onion, tomato and cilantro; plus a finishing dusting of exotic, eggy-tasting chaat masala. It’s a crazy mess to eat, but I find its push-me/pullme flavors and textures to be an incomparable delight.

Post-chaat, there’s a dizzying array of buffet choices — the thing goes on forever. I counted six meat entrees (two in kabob form); five veggie entrees; two soups; two rice dishes; a large salad/condiment bar and four desserts. I liked everything I tried, but was especially fond of the Baigan Bharta (wonderful eggplant stew),

Aloo Cabbage (addictive mixed vegetable curry), and spicy, sweet and sour chicken dumplings. As for non-buffet appetizers, the huge, dense and firm chilimarinated homemade cheese kabobs (Paneer Shaslik, $9) had a great grilled flavor but their accompanying veggies (onion, garlic, peppers) were disarmingly uncooked. For an explosive curry, go for the Cumin Melthi Harydi ($12). Featuring a complex, aromatic, rich, carrot-colored gravy with a sneaky heat, the head-spinning dish was cleverly equipped with refreshing, mouth-cleansing sticks of ginger. Awesome. On the tamer side, but still terrific, was Cumin’s sizzling grill

($15, easily feeds two). Like a giant platter of mixed Indian fajitas, it’s a great way to sample several items on Cumin’s large menu. The “grill” was a round-up of about five kinds of smokily seared, delicious kabobs, my favorites of which were Haryali Tikka (juicy, boneless chicken chunks in a zesty pesto) and Lajwab Seek kabob (huge logs of ground lamb with minced green pepper, onion and cilantro). The mammoth dinner came with fluffy basmati rice and excellent dal. While none of Cumin’s desserts disappointed, the Gajar Halwa ($4 — milky, cardamomy, nutty and fruity shredded carrots) — was especially fun to munch. To read G.A. Greek diner near UA takes simple approach to food, ambience Yiagos and Stratis Kostoglou had simplicity in mind when opening Greek to Me. The menu, for the time being, is a small and manageable collection of breakfast and lunch fare served in a humble dining room with blue and white gingham tablecloths and some Greek accents. “We want to make sure we serve good Greek food. We don’t want to make things complicated,” said Stratis, who opened the store with his father at 4697 Reed Road in

Northwest Columbus. T h e breakfast items consist of the familiar – omelets, pancakes, French toast and typical sides, such as bacon, links and home fries. The lunch menu offers similarly approachable dishes, such as gyros, subs, moussaka, pastitsio and souvlaki. They wanted prices to be inviting, too, as most entrees run between $6

He eventually opened A Matter of Steak in Westland Mall, which he later sold. Meanwhile, his son was an assistant kitchen manager at Texas Roadhouse. Greek to Me takes over 1,300 square feet of space that was most recently occupied by Pizzano’s. It seats 50. The Kastaglous have loftier ambitions for their bill of fare. They want to slowly introduce daily specials and hope to have a beer-andwine license in place by this spring. They also plan to have dinner services available by summer. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch daily. For more information, call 614-725-4323. Lashish, the Greek, offering a large and reasonably priced Mediterranean menu, has opened in Northwest Columbus. The restaurant, owned by Mohammad Ballouz, has taken over 1,200 square feet of space at 788

Bethel Road, ramping up the international flair of the Olentangy Square shopping center, which includes Banana Leaf (vegetarian Indian), Min-Ga (Korean) and Bamboo Café (Vietnamese, Thai). The cornerstone of the menu is genuine shawarma: skewered sheets of lamb and beef, marinated for 48 hours, cooked on a vertical rotisserie. The juices of tomatoes and lemon, placed at the top of the assemblage, gloss the meat and add flavor. “You’ve got to go to New York to get this,” Ballouz said. With the pita option, he brushes the bread with hummus and adds Bermuda onion, mint and tart sumac. He finishes it off on a Panini grill to crisp the bread. A shawarma platter is an alternative. Olentangy getting job done at free-throw line By PAUL BATTERSON ThisWeek Community Newspapers

It takes a lot to distract Olentangy High School senior guard Emily Raiff when she’s at the free-throw line. Raiff leads the Braves with an 86.6 freethrow percentage, making 13 of 15. She hit both of her attempts in a 48-44 victory over Westerville North last Friday. “Free-throw shooting is one of our strengths,” Raiff said. “We try to get to the line as much as possible because we know we’re going to make it. “In games, there are a lot of noises and it’s stressful. But we’re able to tune that all out (at the foul line) and just forget about it.” By the time she plays in a game, Raiff said she has encountered just about every distraction teammates can think of to get her to miss. To improve their foul shooting, Olentangy coach John Feasel has his players spend 10 minutes each practice playing a game called “Free-Throw Mountain.” The rules are fairly simple. Each player is given a position on the mountain

based on the number of the free throws she has made. A player moves up by beating the teammate ahead of her in a freethrow shooting contest. “It gets pretty competitive,” Feasel said. “The girls really get on each other. They’ll yell at teammates, stand right beside them and stare them down. You can do nearly anything but touch them to get them to miss.” “It’s extremely competitive,” said Raiff, who recently took over the top spot in the game. “We battle each other to get that top spot.” The extra work on free throws has paid off for the Braves, who were 10-2 overall before playing Delaware in a nonleague game last Tuesday. With the win over North, Olentangy entered play this week in first place in the OCC-Cardinal Division at 7-1, ahead of North and Dublin Scioto (both 6-2), Dublin Jerome (4-4), Westerville Central and Westerville South (both 3-5), Marysville (2-6), and Olentangy Liberty (1-7). The Braves set a program record last season by making 67.2 percent of their free throws. Going into last Tuesday, Olen-

tangy was ahead of that mark, making 68 percent (134 of 197). Five players — Raiff, Brigid Feasel (83.3 percent), Katie Heath (81.8), Lydia Hyburg (75.7) and Brooke Zwayer (75) — were shooting over 70 percent. Coach Feasel, whose team made nine of 12 free throws in the win over North, said the Braves’ position in the league is directly related to its foul shooting. The Braves have outscored opponents by an average of 12.5 points to 8.6 points in fourth quarters this season. They have been outscored in one fourth quarter, 107 in a 42-40 loss to North on Dec. 3. “We feel like if we can get the lead in the fourth quarter, we’re going to do well,” he said. •Her playing time has been reduced to short shifts, but just having senior Allyson VanGundy on the court has boosted Liberty’s morale. “I’m just really happy for her,” coach Ron Florey said. “When she hit a 3 on her first shot (in a 41-36 loss to Westerville Central on Jan. 7), she smiled like See GIRLS, page B2

Braves’ Brady motivated by dad By AARON BLANKENSHIP ThisWeek Community Newspapers

When junior Ryan Brady steps onto a wrestling mat, whether he’s training or competing in a match for Olentangy High School, his mind often is flooded with memories of his father, Tom. Tom Brady passed away at the age of 38 on Feb. 21, 2005, after battling colon

cancer for nearly a year. He wrestled in high school for Indianapolis Lawrence North, winning sectional titles as a junior and senior, and qualifying for the Indiana state tournament as a senior. “I think about my dad all the time and he motivates me to do my best,” Ryan Brady said. “Every time I wrestle, I definitely give it everything I have because I want to make him proud.”

Although Tom Brady encouraged his son to try wrestling when he was young, Ryan chose to play baseball. Father and son spent countless hours playing catch in their free time. Ryan Brady finally decided to wrestle as a seventh-grader at Shanahan Middle School after he didn’t make the basketball team. It was about two years after his father’s death.

“Ryan played baseball 24/7 when he was younger and he didn’t want to try wrestling because he didn’t want to wear a singlet,” said his mother, Tracy Brady, who laughed while recalling the memory. “I remember him saying that he was going to wrestle because he was bound and determined to get out of the house See WRESTLING, page B2

Boys Basketball

Orange capitalizing on home-court advantage By SCOTT HENNEN ThisWeek Community Newspapers

John Betz believes in his Olentangy Orange High School boys basketball team, especially when it’s playing at home. The last time the Pioneers coach saw his team lose at home was Dec. 5, 2009, a 72-69 setback to Beechcroft. Last Friday, Orange extended its home winning streak to 12 games with a 57-54 victory over Delaware. The Pioneers hope to continue the run Friday in a rematch with Mount Vernon. Orange is 8-2 overall heading into the OCC-Capital Division game with the Yellow Jackets, who won the first meeting 52-39 on Dec. 7. “We have a sign in the locker room that reads, ‘Defend what’s ours,’” Betz said. “We have great home fans and have great community support. It doesn’t matter who takes the court for us, they feel like they are playing for more than them-

selves.” The only other loss for the Pioneers this season came Dec. 17, a 50-45 setback at New Albany. Last Friday in a battle of unbeaten teams, New Albany came away with a 44-29 win over visiting Mount Vernon. New Albany leads the OCCCapital at 7-0, followed by Mount Vernon at 6-1, Orange at 5-2, Delaware at 4-3, Hilliard Bradley at 3-4, Big Walnut at 2-5, Franklin Heights at 1-6 and Watkins Memorial at 0-7. “That’s amazing that the game we played (last) Friday with Delaware was for third and fourth place in the league,” Betz said. “We have a really strong league and it should be an interesting second half. I like that we have both Mount Vernon and New Albany at home this time around.” Mount Vernon won its first nine games, but has lost two in a row. The Yellow Jackets lost at home last Saturday to Newark 63-57.

Senior Ben Hoar, a 6-foot-4 center, and junior point guard Riley Swanson (5-11) lead Mount Vernon. Hoar had 17 points against Newark and Swanson scored 14. In the loss to New Albany, Hoar scored 10 points and Swanson had eight. In the first meeting with the Yellow Jackets, Orange trailed by four points with three minutes to play, but Mount Vernon extended its lead at the foul line, Betz said. Hoar scored 17 points in the victory, and Swanson and guard Charlie Phillips added nine points apiece. Junior Matt Kurelic led the Pioneers with 13 points and Jordan Combs had 10. “Our guys want to play (Mount Vernon) badly,” Betz said. “They felt like they let one slip away from them the last time we played. Now we’re By Chris Parker/ThisWeek playing differently and with a Orange’s Matt Kurelic goes up for a shot after getting past Joe lot more confidence.

The Olentangy Orange High School gymnastics team’s small roster was hampered by injuries in each of its first two seasons. That hasn’t been the case this season. The Pioneers have set a program record for points scored in each of their first three meets. Orange opened Dec. 11 by finishing third (121.6) of seven teams behind Hilliard Darby (127.3) and Liberty (122.15). The Pioneers followed that effort by scoring 122.65 points on Jan. 8 to finish second of three teams behind DeSales (131.475) and ahead of Thornville Sheridan (87.65). And last Friday, Orange scored 126.25 points to defeat Washington Court House Miami Trace (118.3) and Heath (115.4). “We have a full team with a lot of depth, so this year we have someone to step in and help the team if we have someone get hurt or if someone just isn’t performing as well as they need to,” coach Jen Hedrick said. “That’s why we’re already doing better than we’ve done in the past.” On Jan. 8, Becca Keane was third on balance beam (7.85), fourth on floor exercise (8.6) and all-around (32.55), fifth on uneven bars (7.35) and sixth on vault (8.075), Molly Nathaniel was second on floor (8.75), fourth on beam (7.8), fifth allaround (31.25) and sixth on bars (6.8), Kelly Schutte was fifth on vault (8.1) and Danielle Chickerella was fifth on beam (7.75). Last Friday, Keane was first on bars (8.0), vault (8.3), floor (8.6) and all-around (33.2), and third on beam (8.1). Nathaniel was first on beam (8.3), second all-around (32.1) and third on vault (8.15), and Chickerella was third on both floor (8.55) and all-around (31.85). “The freshmen we picked up, Danielle Chickerella and Becca Keane, have helped our scores, and our returning letterwinners have worked hard to improve their routines and skills,” Hedrick said. “Now, we’re really focusing on bars and vault because we have the potential to score better in those events once we get to the really important meets like OCC and district.” •Liberty slowly has improved in its first three meets, scoring 122.15 points on Dec. 11, 123.25 on Dec. 15 and 123.575 last Saturday in the McGee Invitational.

OHSAA

Committee proposes new factors for divisions By JARROD ULREY ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Including the state football championships won by Hartley and Watterson, non-public schools won five of the six state football titles and 19 of the 27 total state team championships awarded by the Ohio High School Athletic Association during the 2010 fall season. If the OHSAA has its way, it could be tougher in the future for non-public schools — which comprise just 12 percent of the OHSAA’s more than 800 members — to dominate at such a high level. On Jan. 13, the organization’s Board of Directors unanimously placed a new bylaw up for vote based on recommendations from the OHSAA’s Competitive Balance Committee that would be the first step toward chang-

ing how schools are assigned to tournament divisions. The proposed new bylaw, which initially would be instituted for football, boys and girls soccer and girls volleyball in the fall, boys and girls basketball in the winter, and baseball and softball in the spring, will be voted on by OHSAA member schools in May. The proposal states that each school will be placed into tournament divisions based on its sport-by-sport “athletic count,” which would be based on a three-part formula. If approved, implementation of the formula would begin no later than the 2013-14 school year and would be determined every other year by the Board of Directors. “The meetings we have conducted with the Competitive Balance Committee have been both productive and professional, and I believe the pro-

If we can build a lead and dictate tempo, I like our chances.” The Pioneers have won five consecutive games, which excites Combs, a 6-0 senior guard. “We’re excited because we can make a big statement in the league,” Combs said. “We have a lot of individual talent, but we have all been playing as a team and that makes a difference.” Through 10 games, 6-3 forward Josh Wintermantel has averaged a team-best 14.0 points and made 19 3-pointers, and the 5-10 Kurelic has added 13.7 points per game with 14 3s. Combs has averaged 13.4 points per game with a team-high 23 3s, 6-2 junior guard Andy Bosley was at 9.1 points per game and 5-8 junior guard Blake Hoskins

posal from the group is fair and equitable and we will see some leveling of the playing field,” OHSAA Commissioner Dan Ross said in a press release. “Ohio is unique in that our public schools have the option to approve open-enrollment policies, but, at the same time, there’s no question that most non-public schools in the state have no geographical boundaries in which they can secure students, and the result has been a disproportionate number of championships won by those schools.” All OHSAA schools currently are placed into tournament divisions based strictly on enrollment figures that the schools submit to the Ohio Department of Education. The proposed three-part formula to establish “athletic counts” would require the OHSAA to include factors in three areas: school boundaries, socioeconomic

WRESTLING Continued from page B1 and away from all the girls, which was me and his two older sisters (Ashley and Melanie).” Ryan Brady didn’t become a starter until his eighth-grade season, when he struggled to put together a .500 record, but he enjoyed the experience nonetheless. Tracy Brady said wrestling likely has helped her son deal with his grief. “When Tom passed away, it was tough on everybody, because we had just moved here from Cincinnati and we were still trying to get acclimated,” Tracy Brady said. “Ryan was very young at the time, but he was a trooper who tried to be strong for me, and my kids carried me through the first couple of years. Once Ryan started wrestling, I think it just clicked with him because his dad had done it, and I think it was a healthy way for him to think about and connect with his dad. Through faith, we believe that his dad is still with him in spirit and that he’s happy to see his son wrestling.” After finishing 20-12 at 140 pounds for Olentangy’s freshman team, Brady split his time with the Braves’ junior varsity and varsity squads last season. Even though he wasn’t a full-time starter, Brady earned his first varsity letter by competing in the 140-, 145-, 152- and 160-pound weight classes, depending on where he was needed the most. Brady impressed Olentangy coach Matt Hammons last season during an OCC-Cardinal Division dual match against Marysville when the 140pound athlete volunteered to move up three weight classes to face three-time Division I state placer Caleb Marsh. Marsh beat Brady by technical fall, but by not getting pinned, Brady cost Marysville a point in a close match that the Monarchs eventually won 32-31. “Ryan was a utility man last year, meaning we could plug him anywhere into our lineup and know that he could keep things close, even against top-level competition,” Hammons said. “We were looking for someone who could go head-to-head with Caleb Marsh for six minutes and not get pinned, and Ryan stepped up and got the job done for us. He took away a point from one of their top wrestlers and we almost beat Marysville, which was the top Division I team in the area at the time. “A lot of kids look at wrestling as an individual sport and only care about themselves, but Ryan’s respected by all of his teammates because he always does what’s best for his team first. Ryan’s a fighter who has a strong will to improve. He’s improved to the point that he’s no longer a utility man. He’s now a kid who can

compete with anyone.” Brady wrestled in several tournaments during the offseason and Hammons said he repeatedly has had to kick him out of the weight room well past the end of his training sessions. As a junior, Brady has earned a 12-10 record while rotating between the 145 and 152 weight classes, and he placed fifth at 152 in both the Olentangy Invitational on Dec. 4 and the Porter Memorial on Jan. 8. “I’m shooting for high goals,” Brady said. “I want to be a state qualifier this year, and a state champion next year. I’m going to try to win one for my father.” Tracy Brady wasn’t surprised to hear that her son has lofty expectations. “Tom was a very successful man who became the youngest (chief executive officer) at UnitedHealthcare, and he always told the kids that they should have high goals,” Tracy Brady said. “Ryan’s a lot like his father. He’s a hard worker. He’s very determined and successful with anything he puts his mind to.”

factors and tradition factors. The “school boundary” factor would be divided into the categories of nonpublic schools with no boundaries, non-public schools with limited boundaries, public schools with statewide open enrollment, public schools with adjacent open enrollment and public schools with no open enrollment. The “socioeconomic factor” would be determined by the number of free lunch participants. The “tradition factor” would be determined by state championship game appearances, state tournament appearances and regional finals appearances. Once all three factors are applied to the enrollment count, each school would have a sport-by-sport “athletic count” for purposes of tournament division assignments. In central Ohio, schools that likely would be affected by some of the

It was Liberty’s first OCC-Cardinal win since a 46-40 victory over Central on Feb. 12. “(Just playing) means a lot to me,” VanGundy said. “I’ve been playing basketball all my life and it just sucked to sit on the bench.” The Patriots forward was averaging 15.5 points and five assists a game when she tore the ACL in her right knee in a 5953 loss to South on Dec. 3. Florey expected the senior to miss the rest of the season. After she went down, VanGundy asked her doctor when she could play again. “The doctors told me that in a couple of weeks, you’re going to feel like you can play again, but your leg might not be strong enough,” she said. “I knew I was going to have surgery and it was one of those where I couldn’t do much more damage to the ligament. The OHSAA’s Competitive Balance Committee was formed in January 2010 in response to concerns raised by a group of school administrators in northeast Ohio. The committee met numerous times throughout 2010 in an attempt to identify competitive balance factors and to propose changes. It was comprised of 29 school administrators and coaches from across the state from public and non-public schools. julrey@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com

GYMNASTICS Continued from page B1 Junior Jackie Hayes said the Patriots are hoping the strong competition they will face on Jan. 29 in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Invitational will push them to improve at a quicker pace. “Our team is where we thought it would be, but we’re hoping to improve a lot in the next few weeks,” Hayes said. “A lot of high-scoring teams, like Brecksville and DeSales, are going to be at Brecksville, so we’ll want to do our best there.” Hayes has been Liberty’s top all-around scorer once again this season. During a 125.8-123.25 loss to Worthington Kilbourne on Dec. 15, Hayes finished first on bars (8.5), floor (8.85) and allaround (33.275). “I’m not doing that well score-wise, but I’m doing well place-wise,” Hayes said. “Clair Voisard is having a good freshman season, and Erin Bowman, Abbie Johnson and Cossette Tolley are doing well, too.” •Olentangy won its first two meets of the season, scoring 127.1 points on Jan. 5 to top Big Walnut (118.625), Dublin Coffman (118.35) and Dublin Jerome (116.65), and scoring 130.175 points last Friday to defeat Dresden Tri-Valley (126.6) and Grove City (113.8). “This is most definitely the best Olentangy team we’ve had since the split with Liberty (in 2003),” coach Misty Lloyd-Matthews said. “Colleen McHugh has been hurt with an ankle injury, but she’s doing great, even with a watered-down routine.
