No charges imminent in city IRS case By LISA AURAND ThisWeek Community Newspapers Grove City police say they’re unsure when charges will be filed for the theft of money related to the city’s unpaid and late federal payroll taxes. Grove City Police Chief Joseph Wise issued a news release Jan. 13 saying that investigators uncovered evidence of a theft within the Grove City finance department. Deputy city administrator Mike
Wasylik said auditors from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and a special investigative unit from the state auditor’s office will get started on their own investigations into the city’s taxes in the next week. “(The police) are pretty certain there was a theft, but they don’t have any target dates for charging anybody,” Wasylik said. The Internal Revenue Service last month told the city it owed about $685,905 in unpaid taxes. An initial in-

City takes look at salt lawsuit By LISA AURAND ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Grove City is exploring its options for recovering money spent on road salt in 2008 and 2009. City service director Les Spring said he’s been investigating joining a class action lawsuit against Cargill Deicing Technology and Morton Salt Co. in hopes of getting some of that money back. A recent report released by Ohio inspector general Thomas Charles found the state of Ohio overpaid by as much as $59-million for road salt in the past decade because Cargill and Morton colluded to drive up prices. Charles’ report concluded that the companies divided up Ohio into noncompete zones in order to overcharge the Ohio Department of Transportation. Grove City buys its road salt through county contracts with the ODOT, Spring said. Spring said he’s still reviewing the report. “I’m not sure what Franklin County is doing,” he said. In the winter of 2008-2009, Grove City paid $148.24 per ton for salt, more than three times the 2007-2008 rate. The 2009-2010 rate was $57.87 per ton, and this year’s rate is $58.98 per ton, Spring said. “We have a good price this year, not like a couple years ago when it was sky high,” he said. With a recent 300-ton delivery, Grove City continues to maintain a nearly full salt store this year,

Cordray will commute to job in Washington By LISA AURAND ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Despite his new job in Washington, D.C., former Ohio attorney general Richard Cordray isn’t leaving his hometown anytime soon. Cordray, recently appointed chief of enforcement at the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, said he plans to commute from his Grove City home rather than relocate. “I’ll out on Monday morning, come back Thursday and work from Grove City on Fridays,” Cor-
dray said. “My twin (daughters) are both enrolled in South-Western schools, and they’re Richard Cordray doing well. They have their friends. My wife is a teacher at Capital (University) law school. This is my home.” Cordray, who graduated from Grove City High School, credits his friends and mentors in town for the values he’s held throughout his political career, beginning

We took on several sitting sheriffs and about a half dozen crooked police chiefs.” His office recovered more than
$1-billion from American International Group in an antitrust case and almost $400-million from Merrill Lynch & Company, he said. “I think we established a principle that in the consumer area we were very aggressive. That’s a hallmark of my administration and has probably led to this new position.” As head of enforcement at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Cordray said he will make sure banks are following governSee CORDRAY, page A2

He promised to pursue whatever avenues are open to the city to retrieve money from the salt companies. “We’re trying to be good stewards of the taxpayers’money, and if there’s money that’s going to be refunded, we’re going to be in line for that,” he said. “We will pursue every avenue of trying to retrieve money if there’s money to be had.” ODOT spokeswoman Melissa Ayers said the organization is waiting to see whether the Ohio attorney general and the Cuyahoga County prosecutor decide to file charges against Cargill and Morton. “They’ll review (the report) and once their findings come back, we’ll be able to determine our next steps,” Ayers said. Cargill and Morton have denied wrongdoing. The companies said the 2008-2009 spikes in salt prices were the result of high demand across the country. Spokespeople for the companies pointed out that Charles’ investigators found no direct evidence that the two companies talked to each other to rig bids for salt.

Decorators’ Show House
Sneak Peek will offer a ‘before’ look By GARY BUDZAK ThisWeek Community Newspapers The Decorators’ Show House isn’t new to Upper Arlington, but this year’s plan for a “Sneak Peek of the home is brandnew. The Sneak Peek, a fundraiser for the Columbus Museum of Art, will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday, Jan. 28-30, at a Spanish revival style home at 4125 Oxford Drive, just east of Riverside Drive. Admission is $5. Visitors attending the Sneak Peek will get a chance to see the home’s 18 interior and four exterior spaces before it is transformed by local designers for the 2011 Decorators’ Show House, held April 30-May 22.
“The Sneak Peek is a new venture for us, said DSH co-chair Robin Comfort. “Indianapolis and other show houses around the country do a similar thing. We thought it’s really a nice idea because everyone likes to see the room before the designers get hold of it. This year’s home was built in 1928 and sits on almost two acres. Among the people who have lived in the home were a cartoonist and a Kentucky Fried Chicken vice president, and its visitors included Dave Thomas and James A. Rhodes. “The (chairs) look for a house that has history and is architecturally interesting, said Pat Hayden, president of the CMA’s Women’s Board. “If you’re dealing with a newer house, you might not get the architectural detail, but you get the room
size. They look for a place that people will enjoy coming to, that there will be a story to tell, where there will be grounds that tend to be landscaped and where the interiors lend themselves to the designers coming in and doing what they do best. Preparations for the DSH began last spring, Hayden said. Comfort was driving around and saw the home, which was for sale. She contacted the realtor, and since the updates made by the decorators tend to add value to the home, the present owners were thrilled to be part of the Show House, Comfort said. A lottery for designers was held, with each designer choosing a room to redo. They’ll show design boards of their plans for the space to the owners.

“It’s like a blank slate or an empty creative palette that they’re working with, Comfort said. In return for donating their time, talent and materials, the designers get potential new clients after visitors see their room transformations. “This is just an amazing thing, because people come and they want to know what they can do for their home, Comfort. “Their creativity triggers something in a lot of people, and they can take it home and replicate it. Hayden said the museum started doing the biennial Decorator’s Show Houses in 1975. Columbus in the early days of 1861 was a town with a very good feeling about itself. Over the past few decades, Ohio’s capital city had grown from an almost invisible village of fewer than 2,000 inhabitants into a thriving city of more than 18,000 people. Other cities in Ohio were doing considerably better, to be sure. Cincinnati was the largest city in the state and indeed in the region. It was “the Queen ED City of the LENTZ West.” And Cleveland to the north was growing rapidly as well. It was not as large as most other Ohio cities, but it soon would be. But Columbus in 1861 was doing quite well and showed every sign of even greater progress in the next few years to come. It was not hard to see why. In the early 1830s, Columbus was a village of fewer than 3,000 people. Since it was created by the Ohio General Assembly in 1812, the town had grown slowly but surely. Then, in the early 1830s, the Ohio Canal and the National Road arrived in Columbus. In less than two years, Columbus moved from being a village of 3,000 to a city of 5,000. And the growth of the city was far from over. In the 1840s and 1850s, Columbus became a major center of transportation and trade. And most of the growth of those years had little to do with canals or the national road. It was the coming of the railroad that made all the difference. In 1850, the Columbus and Xenia Railroad chugged into Columbus and established itself at the northern boundary of the city, where the convention center is today. In case one might wonder why a railroad was built to Xenia — a nice place, but rather small — the answer lay with people who had little to do with the town. Xenia was a terminal point for the Little Miami Railroad. Board a train in Columbus and with a change, one would soon be in Cincinnati — where perhaps one wanted to be in the first place. What was it like to live in Columbus in 1861? In a few words, it was smelly, noxious and a little on the dangerous side. If we could take you back right now to the Columbus of 1861 and put you down at Broad and High streets, you would immediately notice several things. First, you would probably notice that your eyes were watering. The reason for this was not hard to find. Columbus in 1861 is a city that runs on coal. Burning coal heats one’s house, powers one’s business and is commonly used for many other purposes. Over the city hangs a pall of black smoke. The ash from that smoke clings to clothing and hair and seeps into the lungs. It will stain the brick of German Village houses and cling to the gravestones in the Old North Graveyard, where the North Market is today. Second, you would probably notice the smell of the city. Columbus in 1861 is a city where most people walk most of the time. The residents walk to school

and to church. They walk to the market and walk to their business and other interests. When the people of Columbus are not walking, they are riding in a conveyance pulled by horses. The streets are full of horses — pulling carriages, and wagons and simple buggies. And all of those horses leave in the city streets a lot of what horses leave behind. A whole crew of convicted criminals spends most of their days walking the streets and picking up the detritus of the horses. But the most dangerous part of Columbus was the part most people never saw. The average life expectancy of an adult male in Columbus in 1861 was considerably less than 50 years. Unlike our own time, the life expectancy of adult women was even less. The death rate among women was higher because of complications of childbirth. The death rate among both men and women was higher because of a number of ailments for which vaccines and other curative medicines had yet to be discovered. In spite of all of these dangers and disagreeable aspects, people continued to come to the city of Columbus. They came for the same reasons people have been coming to cities for the past several hundred years: The city was where opportunity was waiting. To really appreciate the wonder of a city like Columbus, all one had to do in 1860 was wander to the middle of town and gaze across Statehouse Square. Rising from the middle of the square was one of the great buildings in 19th-century America. More than 20 years earlier, in 1839, the small, frontier state of Ohio had decided to build a new
statehouse. It was thought the building would be done in two years and cost about $200,000. The Statehouse took 22 years to build and cost $2,200,000. But now it was finally done. Occupied in 1857 after the old Statehouse burned in 1852, the new Statehouse was finally completed in 1861. It was worth the wait. It is one of America’s truly great buildings and a reflection of the strong and dedicated people who built it. On Feb. 13, 1861, Abraham Lincoln, soon to be inaugurated as President of the United States, passed through Columbus. After speaking to the Ohio General Assembly, he moved to the steps of the state capitol and spoke to the people. He concluded his brief remarks by saying, “I am doubly thankful that you have appeared here to give me this greeting. It is not much for me, as I shall soon pass away from you, but we have a large country and a large future before us, and the manifestations of goodwill towards the government, and affection for the Union which you may exhibit are of immense value to you and your posterity forever. (applause) In this point of view, it is that I thank you most heartily for the exhibition you have given me and with that allow me to bid you an affectionate farewell.” (deafening applause and cheers) In less than two months the “affection for the Union” of Columbus, Ohio, and the rest of the nation would be tested as never before with the beginning of the American Civil War.

In brief Nominees sought for Senior Hall of Fame The Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging is seeking nominations for the Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. The organization inducts 10 to 12 central Ohioans into the Hall of Fame each year during Older Americans Month. The next annual recognition ceremony and reception will be held on May 18 at the Martin Janis Senior Center, 600 E. 11th Ave. “We’re looking at lifelong dedication and those who are still active and participating in the organizations they love,” said Bethany Dohnal, public information director for the agency. “We want to promote older adult living, the dynamic contributions
older adults can make.” Any individual or organization can nominate a resident of Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Licking, Madison, Pickaway or Union County. Nominees must be 60 years of age or older and a legal resident of Ohio for the past five years or longer. A married couple may be nominated for one award if both have been equally involved in the same activities and both meet the eligibility criteria. The deadline for nominations is March 1. More than 380 individuals have been inducted in the Central Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame since 1975. For more information, contact the Hall of Fame Coordinator at

Boys Basketball
Grove City looking for answers in OCC By FRANK DiRENNA ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Grove City High School boys basketball coach Greg Waits finds little consolation in the fact that his team was competitive in recent losses to Pickerington Central and Pickerington North. Since winning three of their first four OCC-Ohio Division games, the Greyhounds have lost three consecutive league contests, including a 70-69 loss to Central on Jan. 7 and a 64-60
loss to North last Friday. Grove City heads into its home game against Reynoldsburg on Friday at 5-7 overall and 3-4 in the OCCOhio. Gahanna, ranked third in the Division I state poll, leads the league at 7-0. “What we’ve built our program on the last nine, 10 years is the fact that there are no moral victories for Grove City in basketball,” Waits said. “Our kids expect to win every game that we play. We know we have to get better in what we’re trying to do,
and we are. We’re real proud of our kids.” Grove City is looking to avenge a 63-57 loss to Reynoldsburg on Dec. 7 before going for the season sweep of Groveport on Tuesday when it travels to Groveport. The Greyhounds defeated the Cruisers 68-47 on Dec. 10. “We’re in a situation now where we’re in a one-game season every single week,” Waits said. “Every time we play, it’s a one-game season. We have to lay it all on the line and play as hard and give a great effort every
night to have a chance to win that game and move on to the next one.” In the loss to North, Brandon Bapst led the Greyhounds with 16 points, followed by Jimmy Gravett and Mitchell Stephens with 11 points apiece and Jake Green with 10. Green is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 12.5 points, followed by Bobby Brown (9.5), Stephens (8.7) and Bradley Saxton (8.4). “We’re getting close to having success,” Brown said. “Everybody is playing hard and everybody is starting to
get the feel of what we have to do to win. We just have to finish the games.” “Our goal always is to get a little better every day,” Waits said. “We want to be playing our best basketball by the end of the year going into the (Division I district) tournament. I think we’re on our way to doing that.” •Central Crossing is looking to bounce back from a 60-50 loss against Westland last Friday when it plays host to Dublin Coffman on Friday. See BOYS, page B2
Commentary
Netotian rolls first 300 game for Rams There are magic numbers in every sport. These are numbers that define great achievement in that particular endeavor. As most of us know, 300 is the magic number in bowling. It’s a perfect game, all strikes. When it is done, it is etched in one’s sports storybook forever. For Whitehall senior LARRY Nick Netotian, LARSON magic time came on Dec. 10 at Holiday Lanes in a match against Eastmoor Academy. For the first time in his young life, Netotian knocked down all the pins on his first throw every frame and nailed down his first 300 game. “It is what you dream of and you shoot for from the time you start bowling,” said Netotian, who is averaging 222.6 a game for the Rams. “My highest before was a 279. At the beginning of my perfect game I felt pretty good, but it wasn’t really anything special until after the eighth frame when I knew the possibilities that were ahead. “I got nervous and then this crowd formed behind me, which added to the pressure. I tried really hard to focus on my mark and let my ball do the work. When I came to the final frame I was a little bit shaken. I was a bit lucky in the frame before, so I felt a little more confident, and when I rolled the last ball I knew I had missed my mark, but I knew I didn’t miss it by much and my dream of a 300 game was realized. When the pins all fell, I felt so unbelievably relieved and it was just so sweet. I hope to bowl for my lifetime and hopefully I will get another 300, but no doubt I will always remember this first one.” Talking about his strengths as a bowler, the Whitehall standout said, “I think that being able to adjust to different lane conditions is one of my plusses and bowling good when it matters is another positive. Bowling is a very intense game and you absolutely have to stay on track. Confidence, like all sports, is so important. You are taught what to do to be successful, but how you apply that teaching is what counts. You have to trust your throw more and more as you get more experienced. “I started bowling when I was 6 years old over at Main Lanes. My parents bowled every Friday night and my dad coached me a lot when I was just starting. As I got stronger personally my throw got stronger, and at about the age of 13, I began noticing that I could put a hook on my throw and get the ball into pockets, and from that time on I have done pretty well. If there is a weakness that I have it is that I haven’t done particularly well in tournament play and now as a senior I want to make major improvements in that aspect of

Wrestling
Coach: Greyhounds ‘kind of a mess’ By JEREMY STEWART ThisWeek Community Newspapers
The Grove City High School wrestling team is looking to get out of a funk that has seemingly carried over from last season. Considering the talent on his roster, coach Jay DiMasso feels his team has yet to reach its potential. It’s a feeling that came to fruition last season when, despite having six Division I district qualifiers, no one made it to the state tournament. Having four of those district qualifiers back in Robert Coles (160 pounds), Jose Hughes (171), Nick Kowaleski (152) and Zach Reynard (heavyweight), and
given the fact that defending OCC-Ohio Division champion Pickerington North is rebuilding, Grove City expected to contend for the league title. But after three close losses during the first two weeks of OCC-Ohio duals, the Greyhounds are 1-3 in the league and are wondering when their fortunes are going to change. “We’re kind of a mess,” DiMasso said. “We’ve been in six duals and we’ve been a match away from winning them. It’s coming down to how we lose. “Last year, we were a team that performed very well throughout the entire season. We were top three in every tournament. We didn’t peak at the end and
no one made it to state. My only hope is that we can peak this season, but right now we’re frustrated with the season’s results.” On Jan. 13, the second week of the dual season, Grove City lost to Pickerington North 32-31 and lost to Pickerington Central 37-31. A week earlier, the Greyhounds opened the league schedule with a 40-32 loss to Lancaster and a 41-25 win over Reynoldsburg. A stalling call cost Grove City a team point against North. The loss to Central all but eliminated the Greyhounds from league title contention. With three league duals left, North and Gahanna, both of which are 4-0 in the OCC-Ohio, have
the inside track for the championship. “We don’t have the best attitude right now,” said Coles, who is 4-0 in the OCCOhio. “We have to step it up in the wrestling room. (The close losses) will get us to try harder and get better.” Hughes and Kowaleski also are 4-0 in the OCC-Ohio. Reynard fell to 3-1 after losing to North’s Pat Elflein 10-3. He gave up a five-point move in the first period and couldn’t recover against Elflein, who was ranked second at heavyweight in the Division I area coaches poll last week. Hughes and Kowaleski were third at their respective weight classes. See WRESTLING, page B2
Ready Roundup
Girls team still struggling with offense By JARROD ULREY ThisWeek Community Newspapers
By Mike Munden/ThisWeek
Ready’s Nikki Brown gets set to pass to teammate Dani Pugh (25)
See LARSON, page B2 during the host Silver Knights’ 55-52 loss to DeSales last Saturday.
The negatives have been tough to ignore for the Ready High School girls basketball team as it prepares for the final stretch of the regular season. Other than during their 47-27 victory over Yellow Springs on Dec. 2, the Silver Knights were held to 41 or fewer points in each of their first 10 games. An example of Ready’s struggles on offense took place Jan. 13 during a 44-28 loss to visiting Hartley. After trailing 15-12 at halftime, the Silver Knights were outscored 18-1 in the third quarter and committed 17 second-half turnovers. Things went better last Saturday during a 55-52 loss to DeSales, but finding answers on offense has been a difficult task for a roster that features few players who consistently put the ball in the basket. “It’s like we’re in a chess match, but we’re playing with checkers,” coach Joe Lang said. “We don’t understand the game. We compete for a half and when we’ve got to start making things happen, we don’t understand how to score. We have no go-to player.” Dani Pugh is the only senior who sees regular playing time, and she and sophomore guard Kim Lloyd both average about nine points. Pugh put together a 24-point performance during a 44-39 victory over Marion Pleasant on Dec. 15, but scored in dou-
ble figures only one other time during Ready’s first 10 games. Sophomore post player Alexis Mayle has been a bright spot of late. She scored 13 points during a 51-41 loss to Jonathan Alder on Jan. 6 and 10 in a 41-40 loss to Columbus School for Girls on Jan. 8. Because of makeup games, the schedule is about to become another complication for a team that is trying to find its identity before the Division III district tournament. Over a 10-day span beginning Jan. 27, Ready will play six games. In addition to facing Watterson on Jan. 27 and CSG on Feb. 5 in conference matchups, it will face Worthington Christian on Jan. 29, Hilliard Darby on Feb. 1, Grove City on Feb. 2 and Zanesville Rosecrans on Feb. 3. The biggest positive thus far is that the Silver Knights’ defense has kept them in games. “We’re playing hard and we’re trying to mix it up,” Lang said. “We’re trying to keep teams guessing, but it’s very hard to keep up the defensive intensity when you can’t score. We have people who have had good games, but I never know who is going to have a good game. I think eventually we’ll get it turned around, but right now we just make a lot of poor decisions.” •Although it resulted in just two wins over its first nine games, boys basketball coach Don Worstell wasn’t disappointed with a deSee READY, page B2

OHSAA
Committee proposes new factors for divisions By JARROD ULREY ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Including the state football championships won by Hartley and Watterson, non-public schools won five of the six state football titles and 19 of the 27 total state team championships awarded by the Ohio High School Athletic Association during the 2010 fall season. If the OHSAA has its way, it could be tougher in the future for non-public schools — which comprise just 12 percent of the OHSAA’s more than 800 members — to dominate at such a high level. On Jan. 13, the organization’s Board of Directors unanimously placed a new bylaw up for vote based on recommendations from the OHSAA’s Competitive Balance Committee that would be the first step toward chang-
ing how schools are assigned to tournament divisions. The proposed new bylaw, which initially would be instituted for football, boys and girls soccer and girls volleyball in the fall, boys and girls basketball in the winter, and baseball and softball in the spring, will be voted on by OHSAA member schools in May. The proposal states that each school will be placed into tournament divisions based on its sport-by-sport “athletic count,” which would be based on a three-part formula. If approved, implementation of the formula would begin no later than the 2013-14 school year and would be determined every other year by the Board of Directors. “The meetings we have conducted with the Competitive Balance Committee have been both productive and professional, and I believe the pro-

But it’s starting to show. We’re giving up a considerable amount of our strength to youth, but defensively I think we’ve been fairly sound all year. We value the defensive end and we’ve been reasonably good defensively, especially for us being such a young team.” The return of junior Derek Farmer from a shoulder injury over the holiday break has boosted an offense that was held to 41 or fewer points in eight of Ready’s first nine games. Farmer missed most of last season and all of summer conditioning in addition to not being available for Ready’s first five games this season. He scored 10 points during a 4340 loss to Celina in the consolation game of the Celina HALLiday Shootout on Dec. 30. Boys Basketball
Several of district’s top teams to be on display By JARROD ULREY ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Three central Ohio high school boys basketball teams ranked in the top 10 in the Division I state poll, as well as several other expected area powers, will be in action this weekend at a pair of college venues. The ninth annual Ohio PlayBy-Play Classic, which in past years has been held at Ohio State, features four games Saturday at Capital University and three Sunday at the Schottenstein Center. An event Saturday at Ohio State forced organizers to find an alternative location for games that day. “We haven’t played at Capital before, but it’s a really nice facility,” said Dublin Coffman coach Jamey Collins, whose team opens the event at 2 p.m. Saturday against Walnut Ridge. “They had a little jam up because the Schottenstein Center wasn’t available on Saturday, but the organizers were up front about it. It’ll be good for the kids to be in that environment.” Below is a breakdown of the matchups at the Play-By-Play Classic: •Dublin Coffman vs. Walnut Ridge — After winning a Division I district championship and going 20-4 a year ago, Coffman was fourth in the ThisWeekSPORTS.com Super 7 for Jan. 10-16 despite having several new players in key roles.
Senior guard Christian Heine is a four-year varsity player and key member of the team’s backcourt and senior guard Zack Riddle is averaging 17 points in his first season with the Shamrocks after transferring from Watterson. Walnut Ridge was first in the City League-South Division entering play last Tuesday and features one of the area’s biggest frontcourts. Senior Austin Traylor, a 6-foot-4 forward who has verbally committed to play football for Wisconsin, is averaging 19 points. Senior Dwayne Bazemore is a 6-10 post player. “They’re just loaded with talent,” Collins said. “They’re the type of team we’ll have to play in the tournament, so it will be a good test for us.” •Gahanna vs. Chillicothe — The only matchup that features two state-ranked teams will pit Gahanna, the No. 4 team in Division I last week, against Chillicothe, the No. 2 team in Division II a week ago. The Lions are led by senior Stevie Taylor, an Ohio University signee who is averaging 16 points, three assists and 2.7 steals. Jamel Morris, Brandon Smith and Trey Warr are other key players among a ninemember senior class that has Gahanna ranked second in the ThisWeek Super 7 poll. Chillicothe sports a frontcourt that features 6-9 junior Malik London and 6-7 senior
Schedule Below is a list of the games in the ninth annual Ohio Play-By-Play Classic: SATURDAY (games at Capital) 2 p.m.: Dublin Coffman vs. Walnut Ridge; 3:45 p.m.: Gahanna vs. Chillicothe; 5:30 p.m.: Westerville South vs. Burlington (N.J.) Jalen Ragland but also has a pair of talented players in the backcourt in sophomore point guard Zach Johnson and senior Tyler Manion. “I love Capital’s gym,” Lions coach Tony Staib said. “It’ll be a good environment.” •Westerville South vs. Burlington (N.J.) Life Center Academy — South, which was ranked sixth in the state poll last week and third in the Super 7, has a Division I recruit in Wisconsin-signee Traevon Jackson. The 6-2 guard averages 17 points and more than four assists for the Wildcats, who have a trio of other ball-handlers with significant experience in seniors Ben Jones and Damarkeo Lyshe and junior Isaiah Rogers. Life Center won nine of its first 12 games and features 68 senior forward Laquinton Ross (21.5 ppg, 10.9 rebounds), senior guard John Johnson (18.5 ppg, 3.6 assists) and junior guard Andre Horne Jr. (13.5
ppg, 7.2 rebounds). Ross signed with Ohio State in November. •Northland vs. Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary — Northland is off to another solid start despite losing 2010 Naismith Player of the Year Jared Sullinger to graduation, with senior guard Trey Burke taking on the leading role. A Michigan-signee, Burke heads a cast that also features 6-8 juniors Jalen Robinson and Devon Scott as well as junior guard Jordan Potts. The Vikings were fifth in the state poll last week and first in the Super 7. St. Vincent-St. Mary split its first 10 games, as senior DeVonte Beard (14.9 ppg), senior Ricky Johnson (11.8 ppg) and 6-6 junior Lorenzo Cugini led the way offensively. •Canal Winchester vs. Hartley — Two of central Ohio’s best Division II teams this season have been the Hawks and Indians, who were first and third, respectively, in the area coaches poll last week.

Cumin Indian Restaurant a fine replacement for Bayleaf When I heard Bayleaf was going out of business, I grimaced. The Polaris-area restaurant was one of my favorite places for Indian food. But when I heard the Cuisine of India people were taking over, I cheered up. You see, like Bayleaf, Cuisine of India is modern and authentic, serving both beloved classics and lots of contemporary-style dishes popular in cosmopolitan Indian cities. So when I waltzed into Cumin Indian Restaurant my expectations were pretty high. After a few visits, I realized this newbie was destined to shoot to the top of my Indian food list. Other than closing off the formerly open kitchen, Cumin’s owners haven’t performed any drastic cosmetic makeovers. It’s still a big, modern, open and airy room with few, if pleasant, decorations (chiefly multi-hued, saucer-shaped chandeliers) to distract visitors from

by G.A. Benton the task at hand — masticating on fabulously flavored chow. While buffets aren’t usually my thing, Cumin’s is, especially on weekends. That’s when the chaat station gets cranking, and I’m an inveterate fan of chaat. If you’ve never had them, chaats are Indian street-sold snacks that are meat-free riots of bold condiments, wild flavors and manifold textures. Fortunately, this generalization held true on a recent — and blissfully lengthy — lunchtime stopover at Cumin’s great buffet. In front of a longish line and manning a mammoth round pan, the buffet’s chaat guy began with a crispy puck of a potato pancake. To that he added a scoop of soupy,

highly seasoned chickpeas. Then came the garnishing : tart yogurt; chutneys of coriander (spicy) and tamarind (sweet); diced raw onion, tomato and cilantro; plus a finishing dusting of exotic, eggy-tasting chaat masala. It’s a crazy mess to eat, but I find its push-me/pullme flavors and textures to be an incomparable delight.
Post-chaat, there’s a dizzying array of buffet choices — the thing goes on forever. I counted six meat entrees (two in kabob form); five veggie entrees; two soups; two rice dishes; a large salad/condiment bar and four desserts. I liked everything I tried, but was especially fond of the Baigan Bharta (wonderful eggplant stew),
Aloo Cabbage (addictive mixed vegetable curry), and spicy, sweet and sour chicken dumplings. As for non-buffet appetizers, the huge, dense and firm chilimarinated homemade cheese kabobs (Paneer Shaslik, $9) had a great grilled flavor but their accompanying veggies (onion, garlic, peppers) were disarmingly uncooked. For an explosive curry, go for the Cumin Melthi Harydi ($12). Featuring a complex, aromatic, rich, carrot-colored gravy with a sneaky heat, the head-spinning dish was cleverly equipped with refreshing, mouth-cleansing sticks of ginger. Awesome. On the tamer side, but still terrific, was Cumin’s sizzling grill
($15, easily feeds two). Like a giant platter of mixed Indian fajitas, it’s a great way to sample several items on Cumin’s large menu. The “grill” was a round-up of about five kinds of smokily seared, delicious kabobs, my favorites of which were Haryali Tikka (juicy, boneless chicken chunks in a zesty pesto) and Lajwab Seek kabob (huge logs of ground lamb with minced green pepper, onion and cilantro). The mammoth dinner came with fluffy basmati rice and excellent dal. While none of Cumin’s desserts disappointed, the Gajar Halwa ($4 — milky, cardamomy, nutty and fruity shredded carrots) — was especially fun to munch. To read G.A.
