Bus drivers, mechanics OK tentative deal Two-year contract calls for 2.5% raise in first year, 1.75% in second year By JENNIFER NESBITT ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Westerville school bus drivers and mechanics voted to accept a tentative contract agreement with the district on Monday, Jan. 10. OAPSE Local 719, the union representing the Westerville school district’s bus drivers and mechanics, has been in talks with the district since last spring.

The local’s last contract expired June 30, but employees have continued to work under that agreement. Union members voted to reject the district’s last offer Nov. 15. At that time, the union and the district still had sticking points in negotiations, OAPSE Local 719 president Dale Grossman said, but the district had asked that its offer be put before union members. Grossman said the union did so, but

chose to make no recommendation to members as to whether to approve or reject that contract. “That’s part of the problem: We didn’t recommend it; we didn’t not recommend it. That in itself created confusion,” Grossman said. “When that got voted down, it didn’t surprise me because people didn’t understand.” At that time, Grossman said, the union had agreed to take the same basic con-

tract terms the district reached with its other three unions — a two-year contract with a 2.5-percent increase the first year and a 1.75-percent increase the second year. However, Grossman said, Local 719 also asked for a $100 tool allowance for each of its seven mechanics, who use their own tools on the job. The district wasn’t willing to meet that request due to budget constraints, he said.

“It got kind of ugly at one point. I got a little upset that the district was getting so hardheaded about $700,” Grossman said. “If you think about the cost of tools, especially mechanics’ tool, $100 isn’t going to buy much.” While it was somewhat of a matter of principle for the union, Grossman said ultimately, the union did not want to hold See DRIVERS, page A2

Robbins will continue as board president By JENNIFER NESBITT ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Westerville school board president Kristi Robbins was unanimously chosen to continue as president for another year. The vote came during the board’s annual organizational meeting Jan. 5. “I appreciate the opportunity to serve a second year. It’s an honor for me to do that,” Robbins said. Kristi Robbins Robbins was elected to the board for the first time in 2005. She served as board vice president in 2008 before being voted president in January 2009. Board members also unanimously agreed to keep member Jeff Gale in his position as vice

president. Gale was elected to the board in 2007. During the organizational meeting, the board also approved its meeting schedule for 2011. It will continue to meet in a work session, in which there will be discussion of issues but no voting, at 6 p.m. the second Monday of the month. Regular voting meetings will be at 6 p.m. the third Monday of the month. Meetings will continue to be held at different locations throughout the district, both to allow officials to highlight different facilities and to take meetings to residents in different areas, Superintendent Dan Good said. New this year, commencement will be on Memorial Day weekend. The 2011-12 school year will start early, in mid-August. Board member Kevin Hoffman said that

OhioHealth approval excludes helipad, doubles northern setback By JENNIFER NESBITT

Groundbreaking expected by winter’s end

ThisWeek Community Newspapers

OhioHealth will be able to move forward with plans to add a 48,000-square-foot building with a full-service emergency department to its Westerville Medical Campus. Westerville City Council approved the proposed changes to the campus, at the corner of Polaris Parkway and Africa Road, in a 5-1 vote Jan. 4. The plan excludes a controversial helipad and increases the northern setback from the originally proposed 50 feet to 100 feet. The vote came after an hourand-a-half public hearing, during which dozens of residents of nearby Genoa Township neighborhoods voiced their objections to the expansion, mainly over concerns about the noise, traffic and crime they believe the emergency department would bring. Scott Armstrong said the expansion will have a negative impact on the quality of life for the families who live in the neighborhoods adjacent to the OhioHealth property. He said the emergency department will bring the noise and traffic of emergency vehicles, and emergency vehicles will be hazardous to the children who use bus stops on Africa Road near the OhioHealth entrance. “This is a square peg and a round hole. … It doesn’t fit here,” Armstrong told council before the vote. “You’re going to create

more problems with traffic, crime, property values.” Rick Shoaf, who lives directly north of the development, said his daughter is worried about the noise the emergency department will bring and her safety, because her bus stop is near the development. Shoaf said the plans presented by OhioHealth before it built on the site two years ago called for condos and an urgent-care facility, with no reference to a fullservice emergency department. With 21 undeveloped acres still on the 43-acre site, Shoaf said it’s unclear what OhioHealth will be asking to build in the future. “If you vote to approve this, they’re going to build, they’re going to put a lot of additional

money into the facility, and then two years from now, they’re going to have all these plans for things to the east,” he said. “They’re going to piecemeal it together. I believe they’re being disingenuous.” The expansion, Shoaf said, will bring down the values of homes in his neighborhood. “If this is approved, I’m going to lose sleep at night because the value of my house is going to go down,” he said. A handful of residents, including Mary Beth Ingram, spoke in favor of the expansion. Ingram said too often, people fear the unknown unnecessarily. “We are sold anxiety, worry and fear,” Ingram said. “We live in a culture of fear. We become

convinced that we are at danger at every turn.” She said residents do have some valid concerns about the expansion, but overall, it will bring OhioHealth care to patients in Westerville. Ingram said she otherwise has to travel outside Westerville to receive in-network emergency care. OhioHealth executive vice president and chief operating officer Robert Millen said it’s people like Ingram the company is looking to reach with the expansion. “There have been many people in the Westerville area who have raised issues over the need for this,” Millen said. When OhioHealth first looked at creating the Westerville cam-

He said they found 30 percent of adult patients in Columbus hospitals were from Westerville. “We were seeing people traveling great distances for their services from the Westerville area,” Millen said. “We knew there was a pent-up demand for services in

the Westerville area.” For OhioHealth patients, Millen said, the emergency department will allow for better consistency in care because physicians there will have access to those patients’ records and will be familiar with their doctors. With approval given by Westerville City Council on Jan. 4, OhioHealth plans to break ground on the expansion to its Westerville Medical Campus before the end of this winter. On that timetable, construction on the campus at the corner of Polaris Parkway and Africa Road would be completed in spring 2012. The $20-million expansion will include construction of a 48,000-square-foot, two-story building. On the lower level, a full-service emergency department will occupy 18,000 square feet. The building’s upper level will include medical offices. According to a press release issued by OhioHealth last week, the 24-hour emergency department will include 16 patient beds and four observation beds, allowing its staff to treat an estimated 20,000 patients per year. OhioHealth will have the ability to expand that in the future, the press release said. Following complaints to the city from nearby Genoa Township residents, plans to include construction of a helipad were removed, but OhioHealth said it does expect up to four heli-

to an OhioHealth hospital may see repeat tests and will be working with different teams of doctors, Millen said. “We can eliminate that problem by locating a facility here that can do emergency care,” he said. In approving the plan, city council members asked that OhioHealth create a landscape mound to the north of the property planted with evergreen trees as a better shield. They also asked that OhioHealth work with the city staff to create a master plan for the undeveloped portion of the site. “I am concerned that we don’t have a plan for the future,” Councilman Eric Busch said. Councilman Craig Treneff cast the lone no vote on the issue, saying the plans contradict what was originally proposed for the OhioHealth site. In addition, he said, an emergency department does not fit the site. “This plan came to us, really, as a medical office campus, and that’s always been my understanding of it. There’s nothing on the record I can find that indicated a future expansion of this nature and this intensity. That’s really swayed me the way I’m going to go,” Treneff said before the vote. “It is an essential change to the plan, and it’s not one I can support. Many of the concerns are exaggerated, but many I can support.”

up the contract over the $700 disagreement. So, following the November vote, the union held a meeting, and the leadership compiled a list of reasons members chose to vote against the contract, which they provided to the district before Thanksgiving. The district responded with a new agreement Dec. 18, and the district counter-offered last week. The new agreement didn’t differ much from the agreement in November, Grossman said. The $700 tool allowance was left out and the union asked that some language regarding disciplinary procedures be changed. The district agreed to that counteroffer, Grossman said, and the union leadership took it to the members for a vote Jan. 10. He said he believes everyone is ready to move on from the negotiations. “It’s a new year and people want to have some resolution to the old year,” Grossman said. “Most of the bus drivers are happy. I’m happy. We don’t feel an ill-will toward the district and they don’t feel any illwill toward us.” Before being adopted, the contract must be approved by the Westerville Board of Education, which is expected to vote on the contract at its next meeting on Jan. 24.

copter landings per year to transport outbound patients in critical situations. The emergency department will be able to handle all types of patients, but some, like those suffering heart attacks or strokes, will only be stabilized at the Westerville campus before being transported to other OhioHealth hospitals, the press release said. An ambulance will be kept onsite at all times for those situations. The physicians staffing the Westerville emergency department will be the same ones who staff emergency departments at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Grant Medical Center and Dublin Methodist Hospital. According to the press release, the expansion will add 100 full-time jobs to the Westerville Medical Campus, bringing $6.6million in annual taxable salaries to the city. The existing facilities at the OhioHealth Westerville Medical Campus, which opened in 2009, have approximately 300 fulltime employees and see around 1,000 patients a day. The campus sits on 43 acres of land, only 22 of which have been developed.

fact must be publicized as much as possible as early as possible. “I think it’s important to say that early and say that often,” Hoffman said. “It’s different, and we don’t want anyone to miss the first day of school.” The change has an odd effect on this summer, Good said, because it means the summer break will be shortened. “It’s very close between the end of the school year and the beginning of the next,” he said. The last day of classes this year will be June 7. The first day of classes for the 201112 year will be Aug. 17, and the school year will end May 24.

Westerville Square Walmart could be a valued neighbor To the editor: Isn’t it strange that those who oppose Walmart never dig into their pockets to offer an alternative? I am tired at looking at a halfempty strip center that could use more traffic. Increased traffic could mean more business/revenue. The north end has Meijer, Kroger, Giant Eagle and our only liquor store, and a vibrant economy. There is no equal in the south end. Who can prove that Walmart is a bad neighbor? I have a brother who is mildly physically and mentally challenged and an eightyear employee of Walmart. He was hired at a fair wage, more than anyone else offered him. He has enjoyed regular wage increases, based on performance. When he recently went into the hospital for minor surgery, if there is such a thing, his medical expenses were generously covered. His fellow associates stopped by his apartment during his recuperation, to be sure he was OK. When he returned to work, they had a Welcome Back party. Those hardhearted people. Sounds like a neighbor I would welcome. The simple fact is, Walmart got big by offering value for the money. My money. How many dead strip centers can you find in Columbus? We have had a couple close calls in the past and have a couple of strip centers in Westerville close to folding. What if the Walmart turned the tide? It could happen. color added — some of the original detail of the photograph is lost. In the original photograph, much of what made downtown Columbus a special place in the early 1900s can be seen once again. Columbus in the early 1900s was known as the Arch City. It is easy to see why. Straddling High Street every half-block or so is a series of metal arches illuminated by electric lights and topped with American flags. Each of the lights is a clear incandescent light bulb, just like the ones many of us still use at home. And each of them needed to be changed when they burned out, which in those days was rather frequently. Nevertheless, the arches were popular and had been for some time. The arches had originally been erected in 1888 when more than 250,000 people came to Columbus for the 22nd annual Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic. Eventually, the wooden arches, lit by gas, were replaced by the metal arches lit by electricity that we see in this picture. The arches also provided electric power to the streetcars that traveled along the brick streets of Columbus. Columbus had grown a lot since the veterans came to town in 1888. Busch named vice mayor

Photo courtest of the Library of Congress

Looking south on High Street from State Street, circa 1911.

AS IT WERE Continued from page A4 sources after the Civil War led to the rise of several major industries in a city that had once been mostly a commercial and governmental center. By 1910, Columbus was a city of more than 180,000 people and, among other things, was the “Buggy Capital of the World.” We are looking at the commercial heart of this growing city. But it is also a place where many people still live. Columbus, like most cities, has a few skyscrapers. But most of the commercial buildings in the city are still four and five stories tall. Built in an era before elevators, they reflect the simple fact that most people will not walk up more than a few flights of stairs to their homes or places of business. Many of these buildings have metal fire escapes attached to their fronts and sides. While the buildings look substantial, most of their interiors are made of wood and the threat of fire is still quite real in a city where gas lights are as common as electric bulbs. Along the sidewalk to the right can be seen what appear to be a number of large stone blocks along the curb. These are steps to provide more easy access to one’s carriage. While automobiles are becoming a more common sight, many people still rely on horse-

drawn carriages as well as the streetcar system to make their way around town. The shops and stores along High Street provide the widest variety of goods and services to the people who live and work nearby. Most of these merchants have placed large signs on their stores and projecting from them advertising their services. They range from Murnan’s taxi service and “sports parlor” on the left to the more elegant Goodman Jewelers on the right. In the distance on the right, at the corner of Town and High streets, can be seen the distinctive tower of the F. & R. Lazarus department store. There are other distinctive elements of this city of a century ago. Watches were a luxury many people could not afford; the timepieces were worn only on special occasions. To help keep track of the time, large clocks like the one at the right of the picture stood at many major intersections. To meet the need for information, some of the city’s several newspapers were sold by newsboys (and occasionally newsgirls) like the ones we see to the left of the picture. This was a world that had changed a lot during the lives of the people we see here. But for the most part, these people were accustomed to change and had learned to live with it. And per-

haps that is just as well, since a lot more change was not all that far away. Ed Lentz writes a history column for ThisWeek.

Councilman Eric Busch was named Westerville’s vice mayor during city council’s Jan. 4 meeting. Busch was unanimously voted vice mayor by members of council to replace former Councilwoman Anne Gonzales, who resignedDec. 31 before being sworn in to represent Ohio’s 19th House District in the General Assembly. Busch has served on council since being appointed in July 2008. Council still is searching for a replacement for Gonzales. Council received 13 applications for appointments to complete the term, which expires Nov. 30, 2013. Council members interviewed applicants this week and should vote on an appointment at the Jan. 18 meeting. — Jennifer Nesbitt

Magnet school

Can you solve the mystery?

Concerns continue over lottery By JENNIFER NESBITT ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Westerville’s magnet school enrollment policy continues to draw concerns from the public. Following a community collaborative to help shape policy on the district’s magnet school enrollment policy last fall, administrators introduced a new policy to the board of education last month that would eliminate sibling preference and return the district to an admissions lottery. For the 2010-2011 school year, the district decided to allow stu-

dents entering first grade who had siblings at magnet schools to be given a first shot at first grade slots at their siblings’ schools. The policy was designed to help keep families in the same schools. But the collaborative formed by the district recommended that magnet school selection be returned to the traditional lottery system in order to give all students and families an equal and fair chance to get into the program. The policy introduced to the board last month excluded any language that would families to

be “grandfathered” in the program so they could continue to have sibling preference. If the board passes the policy, the administration will be left to decide whether to allow “grandfathering,” district spokesman Greg Viebranz said. Jon Walden, who sat on the magnet school collaborative, addressed the board during the public comment session at its Jan. 5 organizational meeting. Walden said allowing families to be “grandfathered” into this year’s policy would jeopardize the collaborative’s recommendation to

restore the traditional lottery system. “We urge you not to ignore the results of the collaborative,” Walden said. “I know it’s tough because there are a lot of people with a lot of strong viewpoints, but those viewpoints were expressed through the collaborative. Nothing has changed.” Walden said the magnet schools offer different opportunities from the district’s other schools, and all students should be given equal access to those programs. “There’s at least a feeling that the magnet schools have something different than the other schools,” he said. “There are opportunities there that might not get to the other schools. … They’re not just the same schools.” The board could vote on the policy as early as its next regular meeting, at 6 p.m. Jan. 24 in the information, and there will be a waiver form for commons of Westerville North parents of young artists to sign. Westerville’s Gallery 202 seeks artists for directory By JENNIFER NESBITT ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Westerville’s nonprofit art gallery wants to make it easier to find artists in Westerville. Gallery 202 owner Renee Kropat is calling for artists of all kinds — from crafters who work at home to professional painters and sculptors — to create an online directory of Westerville artists. Kropat said she conceived the idea when talking to city officials about arts projects in Westerville. Unaware of what Westerville’s arts community had to offer, the city was looking for artists in other communities for city projects, she said. “They did not realize how many artists were here; how many venues we had here,” Kropat said. “They’re looking outside Westerville. I think we’re doing a disservice to all of our artists if we are not supporting them.” Westerville’s arts community created a printed directory in the 1990s, before the Internet was omnipresent, Kropat said, but that directory was never continued. “A long time ago, when there was an Arts Commission of Westerville, I was part of that commission, and we came up with a member directory of artists. That was before the Internet was really strong,” she said. “That was never updated. The directory was never continued.” Kropat said she’s asking artists of all types to submit their information for inclusion on the website. She said she’d like to include actors as well as those involved in theater production backstage; performing artists; musicians; painters, sculptors and other visual artists; and crafters who would like to sell their goods. Artists of all ages are encouraged to submit their

North’s Kusan sheds mask, hits 1,000 By SCOTT HENNEN ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Caitlin Kusan is seeing the game from a different perspective. The senior on the Westerville North High School girls basketball team discarded a protective face mask that she had been wearing for more than three weeks and scored 22 points to lead a 53-34 victory over Westerville South on Jan. 5. The game also marked a milestone for Kusan, who drove for a layup with

1 minute, 2 seconds remaining in the third period to score her 1,000th career point. “It was pretty great and something I always wanted to do,” said Kusan, who played her first two seasons at Worthington Christian. “But it’s even better to beat South. That’s always a big game.” After breaking her nose during a 61-29 win over Westerville Central on Dec. 11, Kusan wore a protective mask. She played her first game without the headgear against South,

and the 5-foot-10 forward noticed a difference. “You can’t see down when you wear (the mask),” Kusan said. “When I first put it on, I was like, ‘Wow, where is everything?’ You get used to it, but I’m glad I don’t have to wear it anymore.” North coach Jim Kloepfer said he couldn’t be happier for Kusan. “It was exciting to see Caitlin get that,” Kloepfer said of the scoring milestone. “It was something to get 1,000 points, but she’s working on

1,000 rebounds. She’s really a good all-around player.” Through 10 games, Kusan led the team in scoring (13.5 points) as well as rebounding (11.0), blocks (2.3) and steals (1.5). She also averaged 1.9 assists per game. “I think rebounding is the strongest part of my game,” said Kusan, who had 15 rebounds against South. “I get a lot of my buckets off of rebounding.” With the Warriors tied atop the OCC-Cardinal Division standings with Olentangy at 6-1, Kusan deflects her

success to her teammates. Dublin Scioto is third in the league at 5-2 followed by Dublin Jerome, South and Central at 3-4. Marysville is 2-5 and Olentangy Liberty is 0-7. North beat Olentangy 42-40 on Dec. 3 and lost to Scioto 47-41 on Dec. 17. “Being (10-2 overall) is a great accomplishment, but winning OCC is our main goal,” Kusan said. Kloepfer said Kusan has been a leader for the Warriors. See NORTH, page B2

Westerville Central junior Mary Wells (left) and senior Melissa Klodnick placed first and second last year in the state bowling tournament. In addition to continuing their individual success, both bowlers have put their focus on helping the Warhawks win the state team championship this season.

Mary Wells and Melissa Klodnick of the Westerville Central High School girls bowling team placed first and second, respectively, in the state tournament last season, but both would trade their individual awards for a team state title. The Warhawks just missed winning the program’s first state championship last season after

of-five final match. Led by Wells and Klodnick, Central again is expected to contend for top honors in the state. “I would choose the team title first,” Klodnick said. “We all hang together and we’re pretty much a close team.” “We have a lot better chance to win it this year,” Wells said. “We’re getting along better this year.”

Wells, a junior who finished first at state last season with a 729 series, entered the week as the Warhawks’ top bowler with a 231 average. “It was a surprise to me, but if you think about it, all the hard work pays off in the end,” Wells said of winning the individual state title last season. Wells helped lead Central to the Ohio State Buckeye Classic championship last Saturday at HP Lanes, finishing first with a

695 series. The Warhawks finished first (3,810), well ahead of runner-up Mechanicsburg (3,588). Wells, who is in her third varsity season, began bowling at the age of 3. Under the tutelage of her mother, Julie Wells, who is Central’s coach, Mary joined youth leagues at the age of 6 and has been an avid bowler since. She bowls year-round, competing in numerous tournaments.

“It’s always nice to see your kids succeed,” coach Wells said. Klodnick, a senior in her fourth varsity season, entered the week with a 180 average and is contending with senior Paige Trein (183 average) for the second spot on the team. Klodnick, who began bowling at the age of 7, capped her impressive junior season with a strong showing at state, finishing second to See BOWLING, page B3

Youth catching up with South girls team By JEREMY STEWART ThisWeek Community Newspapers

After a fast start, the Westerville South High School girls basketball team’s youth and inexperience may be catching up to it. That fact became clear during the Wildcats’ 53-34 loss to Westerville North on Jan. 5, as North’s Caitlin Kusan, a senior post player, scored 22 points to break the 1,000-point barrier for her prep career. Kusan took advantage of South’s youth and inexperience in the post. Though seniors Nikia Buckingham, Breyona Colley and Rena Pele, junior Rylee Holman and sophomore Briana Colley all can play in the post for the Wildcats, only Holman had a regular role last season. “Every time we step on the floor, it’s a learning experience,” coach Silas Williams said. “I knew we were young. Especially in the post area, we have a lot of inexperience. There were lulls (against North), which we always have. We just have to learn from it.” During South’s 4-1 start, it received solid play from its guards, which Williams said at the start of the season would be a team strength. With Erica Aiello, Lindsay Gerhart and Morgan Neighbors manning those spots, Williams felt comfortable, as all three saw significant playing time last season and Neighbors was a starter.

After losing to Gahanna 56-40 in their opener Nov. 26, the Wildcats won four in a row including beating Dublin Scioto 36-31 on Dec. 10. Scioto won its next seven. South has trended in the opposite direction since then, however. After beating Scioto, South lost three in a row. “I thought that a key to the (South) game was the pressure that we put on Morgan Neighbors,” North coach Jim Kloepfer said. “I thought (North guard) Monique Jones did a good job playing her.” With other teams paying extra attention to South’s guards, Williams said the next step in his team’s development is to work the post players more into the flow of the game. In the short term, that could mean more mistakes on the floor, but he’s willing to accept those mistakes for the prospect of long-term success. “I tell my guards I put the ball in your hands, but just because the ball’s in your hands doesn’t mean you always have to score,” Williams said. “You have to make the right play. “You have to trust in each other. You have to have each other’s back. If making the right play is giving (the basketball) to that inexperienced (player) and letting her learn, then that’s what you have to do.” South has three seniors, but none was

The Westerville Central High School girls basketball team looked to its leaders to snap a three-game losing streak last Friday at Olentangy Liberty. Aly Jurcenko and Abby King each hit two free throws in the final 32 seconds to help the Warhawks hold off the Patriots 41-36. “You take what you can get,” coach Doug Etgen said. “It was a good win for us. We didn’t have a very good game (in a 5730 loss to Olentangy on Jan. 5). ... Our overall team resiliency was very refreshing to see because there’s times when we can look at our shoes and get down on ourselves.” The game opened a varsity girls-boys doubleheader between the two schools. The Liberty boys beat Central 65-48. The Central girls team improved to 4-7 overall and 3-4 in the OCC-Cardinal Division. It will look to complete a season sweep of Dublin Jerome on Friday at Jerome. The Warhawks won the first meeting 25-21 on Dec. 3 behind 14 points from King, but the Celtics were without Kaitlin Miller, who missed the game to attend a club soccer event. Miller, a sophomore point guard, has helped lead the Celtics to a 5-5 overall record and 3-4 mark in the OCC-Cardinal. “That’s going to be a challenge for us,” Etgen said. “They’ve played pretty well since they played us. We usually have grind-it-out games like (last Friday), so I expect another one.” Against Liberty, Central trailed 33-26 late in the third quarter, but rallied in the fourth. Jurcenko’s basket with 4 minutes, 30 seconds remaining gave the Warhawks the lead for good at 35-34. Jurcenko and King followed with their late free throws to seal the win. “That’s who we want on the line and they converted,” Etgen said. Jurcenko finished with 14 points and King scored 12. “We needed a win for our confidence,” Jurcenko said. “We definitely thought we were going to be a little bit better. We went for a little while where we lost some games that we thought we should have won, but it’s nothing you can change, so now we’re just working for the second half of the season.” Liberty was sparked by the return of senior Allyson VanGundy, who was expected to miss the rest of the season after tearing the ACL in her right knee in a 59-53 loss to Westerville South on Dec. 3. VanGundy connected on three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points. “A big surprise was they brought VanGundy back,” Etgen said. “She came back and played. She’s a tough girl.” •The boys team’s hopes of an

Westerville North High School wrestling coach David Grant and his athletes look forward to marquee matches. The Warriors will have that opportunity today when the top three teams in the OCC-Cardinal Division meet at Olentangy. North will face Marysville and the host Braves with first place on the line. “We have to rise to the challenge of wrestling ranked kids, and we also have to make sure that we don’t give up pins in those matches,” Grant said. All three teams opened OCCCardinal competition with two wins on Jan. 6. North defeated Dublin Jerome 4324 and Dublin Scioto 57-21 at Olentangy Liberty. Marysville won the OCC-Cardinal last season at 7-0, ahead of Olentangy (6-1) and North (5-2). Grant said his team will need strong efforts from Joe Herrera at 112 pounds, Ryan Ouzts at 130, Stephen Alger at 135 and Trey Fisher at 140 if it hopes to be successful. Ouzts and Alger have returned to the lineup after battling eye and ankle injuries, respectively. “We’re starting to come together as a team and have a lot more fun,” Alger said. “We’re progressing a lot better

CENTRAL OCC-Cardinal title took a hit against Liberty. Central is 6-4 overall and 42 in the OCC-Cardinal heading into its home game against Jerome on Friday. Against Liberty, Central remained within striking distance early. Using an effective passing, backdoor-cuts scheme, Liberty went on an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter to open a 55-38 lead. “Liberty played an outstanding game offensively,” coach

The best guys get to keep wrestling on the second day.”

DeSales Roundup

Wrestling team gaining confidence, experience By JEREMY STEWART

ThisWeek Community Newspapers

The DeSales High School wrestling team is starting to realize its potential in coach Dennis Lyberger’s second season. The Stallions are gaining confidence as the underclassmen who were counted on heavily last year get more experience. “I feel like we are confident,” said Tony Moore, who competes at 215 pounds. “I think the confidence is coming from how well some of our younger kids did last year and how they carried themselves. Our overall confidence is just way up.” Moore, one of three seniors in the starting lineup, said the confidence boost also comes from some good showings in meets like the BrecksvilleBroadview Heights Holiday Tournament, which concluded on Dec. 30. In a tournament known as one of the toughest in the state, the Stallions placed 32nd (47.5 points) of 42 teams, behind champion Bedford Chanel (191). Payton Gutierrez was sixth at 103and Lee Wilson was seventh at 125. Several other wrestlers also had strong showings but didn’t place. “We came out at Brecksville, which was one of the best tournaments in the country, and we really did well there,” Moore said. “Half of our team made it to the second day. Almost everyone that second day was a match away from placing. Now we just have to turn it on for the meat of our season and get ready for the postseason.” One of those eliminated a match before getting to a placement match was Jason Allen, who competes at 145. Allen said the team has worked on becoming mentally tough. Allen, a junior, spent his first two years at Thomas Worthington and knows what it’s like to compete on varsity as an underclassman. He said he had to overcome the mental hur-

dle that age doesn’t determine success, a notion that clicked for him last summer at the USA Wrestling Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D. “I saw middle school kids beating high school kids and I was like, ‘What’s up with that?’” Allen said. “That’s when I realized it really doesn’t matter what age you were. It’s how good you are and pretty much how hard you work.” Allen had a good December, winning the title at 145 at the DeSales Classic on Dec. 4. He also finished third at 145 at the Pickerington North Panther Invitational on Dec. 18. His only loss was to Chanel’s Dan Orrill, who placed fifth at 140 in last year’s Division III state tournament and won the 145-pound class at the Brecksville holiday tournament. hind Hilliard Davidson (184). They were 12th (52) at the Panther Invitational, behind champion Chanel (282.5). Despite the individual development, the Stallions have had trouble filling out a full lineup. They competed last Saturday at the Kevin Cleveland Tournament at Dublin Scioto without Joseph Lyberger and Dominic Pelino. Lyberger, the starter at 160, is lost for the season with a shoulder injury. Pelino, who competes at 140, sat out with an illness. Their absences further hindered a lineup that has yet to field a heavyweight this season. DeSales is going to find out more about itself this month. The Stallions have a tournament each week in January, including this weekend’s Catholic Invitational Tournament at Toledo Central Catholic, which promises to be one of the most competitive on the

Klodnick took a break from bowling last summer because of knee problems, but returned to the sport in time for this season. She credits coach Wells for her success. “She has been a big help,” Klodnick said. “She pretty much has changed my game so much since I’ve been a freshman. I’ve had better scoring and I can throw the ball so much better. She helps us keep positive.” Coach Wells has emphasized the importance of being a team. “We try to instill in them the total team concept,” she said. “Nobody is any more or less important on the team. Everybody has their role and everybody needs to perform to the best of their ability and the team will succeed.” Seniors Carrie Russell (179 average) and Shelby Haskins (164) and junior Simona Firestone (175) are also looking to contribute to Central’s state title hopes.

Genoa plans no pay raises for 2011 By BONNIE BUTCHER ThisWeek Community Newspapers

The Genoa Township trustees held their re-organization meeting Jan. 6, rehiring all staff members and giving wage increases to none. “There are no increases in these (resolutions to rehire),” said trustee Barbara Lewis. However, the township is in contract negotiations with its police and fire department unions, whose contracts expired Dec. 31. The trustees rehired 32 police department employees; eight maintenance employees; 22 fulltime and seven part-time fire department employees; and 10 fulltime and two part-time employees for administration, building and grounds, fiscal office, and zoning. Trustees also: • Elected Rick Carfagna as chair and Karl Gebhardt as vice chair of the board. • Approval 87.21 miles of roadway under the township’s maintenance responsibility. Roadway in 2010 totaled 86.97 miles. • Approved elected official compensation which is set by state law and based on the township budget. The fiscal officer receives $28,176 annually. Trustees each receive $20,568 annually. • Adopted employment policies of a minimum wage of $7.40 per hour and a maximum wage of $44.71 per hour. • Approved the 2011 road maintenance program estimated to cost $450,000. • Approved providing health insurance with vision, dental, life and disability benefits for all fulltime employees and part-time employees working at least 1,500 hours per year.

The Beat Arts, eats and fun in central Ohio

FAB 5 By Jim Fischer

1 One day, a presently-young

film composer/pianist will perform a concert paying tribute to Dave Grusin, the Academy Award-winning film composer who, this weekend, pays tribute to film composer Henry Mancini in concerts with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra. Or at least if there’s any justice, one will. Point being, Grusin’s career is heavily influenced by the great Mancini, so it would be appropriate to carry on the tradition. The CJO program is “A Night at the Movies,” and features Mancini tunes like The Pink Panther Theme and Baby Elephant Walk alongside other classic film repertoire, including Somewhere Over the Rainbow and As Time Goes By.

Dave Grusin

A jazz pianist (and record label exec — he’s the “G” in contemporary jazz giant GRP Records) as well as composer, Grusin’s film scores include Heaven Can Wait, On Golden Pond and Tootsie. Tickets for the Jan. 14-15 concerts at the Southern Theatre are $41-$49. Call (614) 294-5200.

STOMP is still cool. And hot, evidenced by the continuing presence of a North American Company, a permanent London Company and a European tour, all in addition to its 14-year continuous run in New York City. The brooms, plungers, trash cans and lighters are all back, but the troupe is always on the lookout for new “instruments” — this latest tour includes tractor tire inner tubes and paint cans. STOMP runs at the Palace Theatre Jan. 14-16. Tickets are $22.50$57.50. Call (614) 469-0939. there a power-hipster cat3 Is egory on modern pop

Scotland-born David Francey has made his home in the Toronto area since his family moved there when he was a youngster. His upbringing in a working-class neighborhood imbues his songwriting with a poetic sense of the day-to-day. His latest work is a collaboration with Mike Ford of Moxy Früvous, inspired by their two-week journey aboard a 750foot bulk carrier on the St. Lawrence Seaway. Amelia Curran is a Maritimes native and resident for whom songwriting is but one of her pursuits — she is also a playwright and actress. Her songwriting hardly suffers from her varied interests — check her latest, Hunter, Hunter, for evidence of this. The two will perform Friday, Jan. 14, at the Columbus Performing Arts Center. TL: Characters will arrive on the scene about 20 minutes before “curtain.” The party starts as soon as you arrive and grab a beer. You will feel like you are attending the most outrageous wedding you have ever been to in your life! TB:Will there be dancing? TL:Yes, plenty, so wear comfy shoes. Scampering waiters and above-average food at new Poblano’s MENU Except for the hardest-working and quickest-moving wait staff in town — servers literally, stunningly and unfailingly jog across its wide-open and winding-around spaces — Poblano’s is nothing you haven’t seen before. That said, this bright and tidy newish Mexican restaurant’s food was consistently a cut above the norm. Occupying a rambling, double-decker edifice spread out over several rooms, Poblano’s is a big and splashy establishment. Kind of fun in a kitschy and touristy way, its brash color scheme alternates from one tropically tinted wall to the next. So as your head whirls as you try to follow that kinetic wait staff moving to the beat of relentlessly uptempo cumbia music, your eyes will rush past tones like tan-

by G.A. Benton gerine orange, avocado green, mango yellow and chili pepper red. After the arrival of fresh and above-average chips and salsa, you’re probably going to want some of the slightly orange-flavored house margaritas. I recommend the worth-it upcharge for a lasts-forever (and potent!) half pitcher of “Poblano’s” Margaritas ($17) made with Hornitos tequila and Cointreau. Appetizer-wise, though the homey, oregano-flecked and salty chicken and tortilla soups were both pleasant enough (each $2.50), my favorite starter was the extra-large and super-valued

Whitefish Ceviche ($6.50). I liked how its abundant, creamy and unblemished avocado chunks calmed down the assertive yet enticing fresh lime juice mixture

(with diced tomato and onion) in which the plentiful chopped raw fish was “cooked.” From the “House Specialties” entrees, El Amigo ($15) will definitely live up to its name and be your friend — if, like me, you’re a big eater. A virtual Mexican smorgasbord on a single plate, it was spilling over with nicely seared shrimp plus rice and beans (they grace most every meal and yes, they’re better than most), crisply grilled slices of thin beef (carne aside) and a boneless, skinless chicken breast. Both terrestrial proteins tasted great beneath their layers of rich melted Mexican cheese and zesty, greasy chorizo (but what wouldn’t?) Real Mexican chiles rellenos have an eggier batter than you generally get in America. Since I got something approximating that at Poblano’s, I’d rate theirs

($10.50) on the higher side. I mixed and matched a chicken (stewy) with a beef (hamburger vastly improved by being cooked with onion, carrot and potato) to fine effect. Though I doubt it was completely made from scratch, the mole sauce on my Enchiladas Poblanos ($9.50) was thicker, less sweet, richer and more complex (tasting of roasted chilies with a hint of cinnamon) than average.

It was slathered over a trio of tortillas wrapped around chicken stewed with rajas (roasted poblano pepper strips). Nice. Also quite nice was a massive platter of Chile Verde ($11). That one featured huge chunks of tender, stewy pork shoulder enlivened by a piquant tomatillo salsa. I’m a sucker for Pastel de Tres Leches, and Poblano’s version ($4.50) did not disappoint. Soaked in sweetened condensed milk, slightly perfumey and elaborately decorated with caramel icing piped into rococo decorations, it was a piece of cake that tasted as good as it looked. To read G.A. Powell pizzeria serves up classic New York-style pies After Brooklyn Pizza opened on New Year’s Day, the New Yorkers started filing in. One guy was from Brooklyn, another from Staten Island. Long Island was represented, as was Albany. Owner Anthony La Cerva didn’t know there were so many Empire State transplants living in central Ohio. “There’s a lot of pressure on me,” he said. But it seems he has a hot, cheesedripping commodity – a New York-style pizza, complete with a crispy, foldable crust, 100-percent mozzarella and a house-mixed sauce. “The only thing that’s missing is the water,” he said. La Cerva’s goal was to create a true pizzeria, similar to the ones his father owned in the New York metropolitan area. “When I was a kid, I was stuck at a table folding pizza boxes,” he said. Thin-crust pizzas, cut into triangles no less, appeared to be an anomaly in central Ohio. Rarer still were by-theslice options. “Maybe the pizza places (in town) don’t think they make enough money on it,” he said. “I’m stumped. In New York, they’re all over the place.” Brooklyn Pizza, a carryout at 30 Grace Drive, has taken over the former Joshua’s Pizza in a strip center just north

of the restaurant-laden intersection at Liberty and Olentangy streets. La Cerva said he’s somewhat concerned about the lack of foot traffic in his strip center but is confident his product is singular enough to draw people from all over the region. “I want to be the exclusive,” he said. “Everybody’s going to have to come over here.” Pies come in 14 and 16 inches, plus a 16-by-16 Sicilian alternative. Toppings include the traditional to more designer choices, such as roasted red peppers, sun-dried tomatoes. A 16-inch

oats is being served at Starling’s new breakfast-and-lunch spot, Jodi’s Home Cooking, which recently took over the 29-seat Grace Diner space at 240 N. Liberty St. She admits that most customers haven’t even heard of it. “But once they taste it, they love it,” said Starling, who ran the Sunbury Grill for three years. It has myriad uses – for example, complementing omelets – or is enjoyable as a side, she said. Starling’s customers can get a GLT – a goetta, lettuce and tomato sandwich. She also has a parade of homemade dishes, including buttermilk biscuits and gravy, soups, chili, pancakes and such. Her potatoes are fresh-cut and her burgers are hand-patted. Prices range from $3 for a la carte items to $7.99 for meals. “I love to cook. I like to cook anything,” she said. “I’m not much of a baker. I love to cook comfort food that fills people up.” Jodi’s Home Cooking is open for breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Sunday, closed Monday. For more information, call 614-785-0474.

few additions, general manager Eduardo Pedroza said. One is the tableside preparation of guacamole, using fresh ingredients, he said. An order for $5.99 serves more than two people. Other variations include more seafood dishes, vegetarian options and the choice of spinach and wheat tortillas. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily.
