Board OKs job description for Domine By LORI WINCE ThisWeek Community Newspapers The New Albany-Plain Local school board approved a job description for new superintendent April Domine at its organizational meeting Jan. 6. The job description details Domine’s responsibilities to the board and to the district, calling the superintendent “the chief executive and administrative officer of the board.” According to the description, Domine’s key functions are to: • Establish a vision, expect continu-

ous improvement and develop a focused plan for achieving district goals. • Facilitate communication and collaboration with the board of education and the district treasurer, establish and maintain effective relationships with school personnel and engage the external community. • Identify, prioritize, recommend and follow policies and governance procedures that maintain a focus on the goal of ensuring the success of all students. • Place a primary focus on improving instruction and enhancing student learning.

• Support individuals at all levels in the district and assume that the central office is a support and service organization for the schools. • Identify, address, April Domine and/or resolve tasks and problems that emerge in the district, which are unique or crucial to the overall successful operation of the district. Jeff Warner, the district’s communications director, said the district has had

job descriptions in place for past superintendents, though this one is a little different. When developing the new one, board vice president Laura Kohler said, district officials looked at the existing job description, the superintendent search profile created by the district and best practices, including information from the state, which has been updating superintendent evaluations. “We found a lot of similarities and overlap with the work that the state has done so we combined that information and we think that we have an evalua-

tion that will provide direction not only for the superintendent but for the school district as a whole,” she said. The board also confirmed an evaluation system for the new superintendent. Using a 2009 evaluation as a template, the board will include Domine’s first-year goals in the evaluation to gauge her progress. The board and Domine currently are working together to establish her first-year goals. In other business, the board unanimously approved Mark Ryan as board president for 2011 and Laura Kohler again was selected as vice president.

Village, SUPER SPELLER township announce raises for 2011

Chamber launches community resources website

Both New Albany and Plain Township employees will receive raises this year. According to the 2011 budget passed by the village, a 2-percent cost-of-living increase was included for employees. Because the village is expected to become a city in 2011 — after the results of the 2010 census are certified by President Barack Obama — officials also included funds for legal services associated with negotiations for employee unions. Employees of the service department already have expressed interest in being part of a union, said Dave Caldwell, assistant director of the United Steelworkers union District 1. No pay increases have been introduced for Mayor Nancy Ferguson or members of village council. The mayor currently earns $20,000 per year, while each council member makes $9,165. Salaries for those individuals must be changed by ordinance and no legislation has been introduced, said James Nicholson, village finance director. Those salaries have not increased since 2008. Plain Township trustees also approved increases for the township’s employees during a meeting last month.

New Albany residents can now access a website to search for everything from local shopping and food destinations to government resources and service organizations. “We are a fairly young community, a growing and energetic community, and I think we saw the opportunity to connect all the resources in New Albany,” said Tammy Krings, chief executive officer of Travel Solutions and chair of the New Albany Chamber of Commerce’s strategic-planning committee. “Using the chamber and its access to information and resources, we formed a single point where you can find what you need to know about New Albany.” The new website — www.experiencenewalbany.com — was launched in December on the recommendation of the chamber’s strategicplanning committee. Krings said the committee recommended several strategies last summer that would expand the chamber’s reach and provide more resources for its members. She said the community had no single resource where a new resident could find a florist, research local schools and find churches. Using the chamber resources and assistance from chamber member Prism Marketing, which hosts the website, the chamber is put all those links together on the site. “Being a single source of information, there’s a lot of outreach to local entities,” Krings said. “We’re still forming those relationships.” Chamber president Eileen Leuby said the site also links to other organizations, such as the Columbus Blue Jackets hockey team and the Columbus Crew soccer team. “The Columbus Blue Jackets, for example, can’t join all the chambers in the area, but we need to connect our young professionals with them,” Leuby said. The website also features information on

Chamber business expo slated this month By LORI WINCE ThisWeek Community Newspapers The New Albany Chamber of Commerce will again host a business expo in January to help residents broaden their networks and businesses expand their customer bases. This year’s Business and Community Expo will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at the Church of the Resurrection, 6300 E. DublinGranville Road in New Albany, said chamber president Eileen Leuby “It’s a great time for new families to come out and meet our community service organizations,” she said. “It’s a more personal atmosphere.”

The expo is a resource for residents to learn more about community organizations and, because many are accepting new members, discover new ways to get involved. Attendees may also be able to learn about job opportunities. “Sometimes people looking for a job opportunity or a career change visit, looking for more information,” Leuby said. Residents will have the chance to meet representatives of local businesses, but Leuby said most don’t do interviews during the expo. “Companies are not necessarily specifically recruiting. Most of them are doing that through their websites,” she said.

Companies expected to attend the expo include: the Hampton Inn and Suites of the Columbus-Easton area; Windsong Massage and Therapy; Namaste Embroidery; Ohio Family and Sports Chiropractic; New Albany Gardens and Care Center; Heartland Bank; Eco Ohio; Lifevantage; Live the Source; TechColumbus; and Yard Solutions. Leuby said the expo is another way the chamber reaches out to its members and the community. More than 40 organizations and businesses usually participate. Admission is free. For more information, visit www.newalbanychamber.com or call the chamber office at (614) 855-4400.

Merit-based increases were approved for all administrative and maintenance personnel. Barb Gentile, the township’s accounting assistant, said the raises will be between 1 and 3 percent. The township has 10 nonemergency employees. Township administrator Ben Collins said in 2010 the township only increased salaries 1 percent. This year’s increase will average 2.5 percent for administrative and maintenance personnel and the firefighters and fire department employees will receive a 2.5percent increase. “Two-and-a-half percent seemed reasonable at this point in time. The township’s in a good position financially,” Collins said. The fire department has 38 full-time personnel and 23 part-time personnel that will receive the 2.5-percent increase. Trustees agreed Dec. 16, with trustee Dave Olmsted absent, to continue their current compensation for 2011. Collins said trustees have been paid the same rate since 2008. Trustees earn $15,998 annually and the fiscal officer earns $24,355 annually, Gentile said. The fiscal officer’s salary has not increased since 2008 either, she said. lwince@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekNews.com

WEBSITE Continued from page A1 chamber members and other organizations and businesses close to the community. The website will continue to be updated and could become part of a larger opportunity to help the chamber expand its reach, Leuby said. “We could explore more blogs and create mechanisms to expand our networking of professional relationships,” Leuby said. Leuby said the chamber is exploring the use of other social media and watching young professional’s organizations popping up around the country to determine if there are other ways the chamber can better interact with the community. Krings said another component could involve both established and potential new businesses. “We have very big businesses here for such a little village,” she said. “We’re looking to engage small, medium and large companies to share information on more of a functional-type platform.” She suggested a humanresources seminar or professional meeting for humanresources professionals to discuss recruiting and how to handle employment issues. The meetings would be facilitated by the chamber. lwince@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekNews.com

By LORI WINCE ThisWeek Community Newspapers Tween Brands, which operates Justice stores, will not move its headquarters from New Albany despite a recent corporate reorganization by its publicly held parent company. “It truly is a corporate restructuring that has no other affect on Justice and Tween Brands in terms of anything operationally,” said Vivian Behrens, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Dress Barn and Maurices. Dress Barn and Maurices also are part of the new company, Ascena Retail Group Inc., formerly known as Dress Barn Inc. Behrens said the change provides further strategic operations and financial flexibility for the parent company, which has moved its operations to Delaware from Connecticut. “Incorporating the new holding company in Delaware will allow the company to take advantage of the flexibility, predictability and responsiveness that Delaware corporate law provides,”

said a statement from the new company. “The business operations, directors and executive officers of the company will not change as a result of the reorganization.” Company shares will now be traded on NASDAQ as ASNA. The releasure further states that as a result of the reorganization, “Dress Barn, Maurices and Tween Brands, which operates our Justice brand, became subsidiaries of Ascena, and (Dress Barn Inc.) shareholders automatically became stockholders of the new Delaware holding company on a one-for-one basis, holding the same number of Ascena shares and same ownership percentage after the reorganization as they held immediately prior to the reorganization. Company president David R. Jaffe said the change was meant to help the “family of retail brands, each serving a unique customer niche,” by better reflecting the company’s vision for the future. lwince@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekNews.com

GOODMAN Continued from page A1 Goodman’s political career includes serving on Bexley City Council from 1995 to 1997, the Ohio House of Representatives from 1998 to 2001, and the Ohio Senate from 2001 to 2010. He has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Miami University and a law degree from Case Western Reserve School of Law. The Republican worked as an assistant attorney general for Ohio from 1995 to 1998 and was an attorney in private practice prior to that. Goodman will oversee the many functions of the Ohio Department of Commerce, which was established in 1921 to regulate commercial activities, according to the department’s website. The following divisions will be under Goodman’s direction: • The Division of Financial Institutions, which regulates Ohio’s state-chartered deposito-

ry institutions, non-depository financial services and trust companies and licenses domestic and foreign-money exchanges. • The Division of Industrial Compliance and Labor, which reviews and approves building plans for commercial and public building projects, regulates and certifies inspections of public boiler and elevator systems. • Division of Liquor Control, which licenses the manufacture, distribution and sale of alcoholic beverages. • Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing, which licenses real-estate brokers and salespeople and conducts audits. • Division of Securities, which enforces the Ohio Securities Act. • Division of the State Fire Marshal, which enforces the Ohio Fire Code and oversees investigation of crimes related to fires, firefighter training and firesafety education for businesses and the general public. • Division of Unclaimed Funds, which is responsible for

returning money that is unclaimed due to unused checking and savings accounts, forgotten rent and utility deposits, uncashed checks, undelivered stock certificates and uncashed insurance policies.

candidates for zoning board, commission

Plain Township is seeking candidates to serve on the board of zoning appeals (BZA) and the township zoning commission. One regular seat is open on each board, as well as an alternate’s position for the commission. Alternates serve if a regular commission member cannot. At a meeting last month, Plain Township trustees had considered legislation to appoint Valerie Jorgensen to the BZA and Sylvia Snabl to the zoning commission. Township administrator Ben Collins said the township decided to postpone that vote and allow more time for others to apply. Interested residents must live in the incorporated part of the township. Applicants should send a letter of intent and résumé to the administrative office, 45 Second St., P.O. Box 273, New Albany, 43501. Collins said trustees hope to make an appointment in February. No job requirements or experience are necessary, although, Collins said, the township seems to attract people with construction, architecture and planning experience for the appointments. The BZA meets at 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month and the zoning commission meets at the same time the second Thursday.

Commentary & opinion Letter

Superintendent has impressive credentials, leadership skills To the editor: Recently, the board of education introduced April Domine as New Albany-Plain Local School District’s new superintendent. As members of the screening committee appointed by the board to interview candidates for the position, we had the pleasure of meeting a number of candidates. Some pursued the position, while others were actively recruited. Some had traditional education experience, while others had nontraditional backgrounds. It was a broad, thorough search with candidates from Ohio and around the country. One of Domine’s most impressive credentials has been her work as senior director of performance management and leadership at Battelle for Kids. She worked in the Houston school district, where she applied her expertise in strategic planning, metrics and data analysis to lead a project funded by the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation. The project focused on the design of a strategically aligned performance-management process. Essentially, she created metrics that measure operational efficiency and effectiveness and academic performance across the district. We believe this particular area of expertise will serve New Albany well as we set benchmarks for our schools based not just on Ohio’s minimum standards, but measured against the top-performing districts nationally, both

public and private More recently, Domine led a project on transformative school reform through a collaboration of 21 Appalachian school districts. Domine’s team was awarded over $30-million through the federal Race to the Top incentive program and Teacher Incentive Fund grants. So impressive was the work of Domine and her team that they were invited to present the proposal to the U.S. Secretary of Education and to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Presently, Domine is completing her doctoral work at the Peabody College at Vanderbilt University, the top-ranked doctoral leadership program in the nation. Peabody’s doctoral program in educational leadership and policy is highly selective, open annually to only 15 to 20 candidates in the nation. Michael McLendon, associate dean and chief of staff for Peabody College, said this about Domine: “Judging even by the highest standards of experience and professionalism, we are pleased and delighted to claim April as one of our students. She is a proven leader: accomplished, creative and deeply committed to reform and improvement of schools.” When we interviewed Domine, her intellect and friendly demeanor were evident right away; however, we recognized that leadership was a key attribute for this position.

With respect to her leadership abilities, Jim Mahoney, executive director of Battelle for Kids, said, “April excels in creating a vision with communities, building collaboration with any group of stakeholders and identifying, communicating and implementing concrete strategies to improve student achievement. Ultimately, leadership is the ability to not only do these things, but to engage and inspire others to subscribe in the vision and invest in getting things done. April has a record of doing this very well.” Based on her impressive professional background at the forefront of educational reform, her demonstrated grasp of the issues impacting education and her leadership skills, we believe Domine is the right choice to lead our schools and deliver quality education. We welcome her to New Albany and look forward to working with her, as well as the students, teachers, staff and community, to accomplish great things for our district. Picture of State and High streets is a snapshot of Columbus’ past The past can tell us its story in a lot of ways — with diaries, letters and descriptions by people of the events that make up their lives. We can also learn a lot about a city by looking at pictures from time to time, especially if the picture is clear and crisp and full of detail. And this picture is just that. It was taken about 100 years ago. A photographer placed his camera about a third of the way into the intersection of State and High streets in Columbus and aimed it to the south along High Street. The photographer has been careful to take a picture without too many people, whose rapid movement might only show up as an occasional blur in the image. The photographer wants as much precise detail as possible because this picture, like many others, will later be made into a postcard. But in the making of the postcard image — even with a lot of color added — some of the original detail of the photograph is lost. In the original photograph, much of what made downtown Columbus a special place in the early 1900s can be seen once again. Columbus in the early 1900s was known as the Arch City. It is easy to see why. Straddling High Street every half-block or so is a series of metal arches illuminated by electric lights and topped with American flags. Each of the lights is a clear incandescent light bulb, just like the ones many of us still use at home. And each of them needed to be changed when they burned out, which in those days was rather frequently. Nevertheless, the arches were popular and had been for some time. The arches had originally been erected in 1888 when more than 250,000 people came to Columbus for the 22nd annual Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic. Ohio’s rather modest capital city had never seen anything quite like the tent city the veterans built during their more than weeklong stay. The arches were originally designed to be temporary and keep the streets lit during the convention to deter crime. However, they proved to be quite popular. Eventually, the wooden arches, lit by gas, were replaced by the metal arches lit by electricity that we see in this picture. The arches also provided electric power to the streetcars that traveled along the brick streets of Columbus. Columbus had grown a lot since the veterans came to town in 1888. The opening of the Hock-

ing Valley’s coal, lumber and iron resources after the Civil War led to the rise of several major indusED tries in a city that had once LENTZ been mostly a commercial and governmental center. By 1910, Columbus was a city of more than 180,000 people and, among other things, was the “Buggy Capital of the World.” We are looking at the commercial heart of this growing city. But it is also a place where many people still live. Columbus, like most cities, has a few skyscrapers. But most of the commercial buildings in the city are still four and five stories tall. Built in an era before elevators, they reflect the simple fact that most people will not walk up more than a few flights of stairs to their homes or places

of business. Many of these buildings have metal fire escapes attached to their fronts and sides. While the buildings look substantial, most of their interiors are made of wood and the threat of fire is still quite real in a city where gas lights are as common as electric bulbs. Along the sidewalk to the right can be seen what appear to be a number of large stone blocks along the curb. These are steps to provide more easy access to one’s carriage. While automobiles are becoming a more common sight, many people still rely on horsedrawn carriages as well as the streetcar system to make their way around town. The shops and stores along High Street provide the widest variety of goods and services to the people who live and work nearby. Most of these merchants have placed large signs on their stores See AS IT WERE, page A6

Detroit pastor to speak at breakfast honoring King Several Columbus events scheduled to commemorate birthday of civil-rights leader By GARY SEMAN JR. ThisWeek Community Newspapers The Rev. James C. Perkins will deliver the keynote address at the 26th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast, slated for 7:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, 400 N. High St. Perkins, pastor of the Greater Christ Baptist Church in Detroit, describes his speech as “positive and uplifting,” but also challenging to the audience. “The reason we need to continue to celebrate his life and legacy is because it brings us back to face the fact that, as a nation, we are not where we need to be and should be,” Perkins said. Doors open at 7 a.m. Tickets are $35 and must be purchased in advance by calling (614) 252-0868. The event will adjourn at 10 a.m. The theme of Perkins’speech is “Keep on Dreaming,” which is drawn from the Bible’s account of Joseph and his brothers in Genesis 37:5: “Joseph dreamed a dream and he told it to his brethren, and they hated him yet the more.” “The point is that, for whatever the reason, dreamers build an atmosphere of hate,” Perkins said. Perkins, 59, graduated from high school in 1968 and went to college four months after King was assassinated. He said he always planned to go into the ministry but felt motivated by King’s words and actions. “It did inspire me,” Perkins said. “I felt a sense of responsibility to try and challenge others to perpetuate the dreams that he talked about.”

Perkins will be preceded by several other speakers, including Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman. “Dr. King said, ‘Everybody can be great because anybody can serve.’To keep Dr. King’s dream alive, we must rise to meet the needs of our community,” Coleman said in a prepared statement. “We remember how Dr. King inspired people to give what they could of their time and talent. He provided opportunities for them to learn and grow. And as a result, they were able to change our world.” The breakfast is part of a daylong tribute to King. Residents are invited to gather at City Hall in preparation of the “Celebrate the Legacy” march, which will begin at 4:45 p.m. “We are reaching out to the youth to bring banners representing their school along with a message of nonviolence or quote of Dr. King,” said Napoleon Bell, executive director of the Columbus Community Relations Commission. “We are also asking businesses, social groups, community groups and people of all cultures to come out to the march supporting Dr. King’s message advocating human and civil rights.” The march will end at Veterans Memorial, 300 W. Broad St., where a free theatrical program will begin at 6 p.m. The program will feature performances from BalletMet Columbus, actors from different studios and a 150-member children’s choir. The theatrical portion of the show will center on the connection between the African-American and Jewish communities in the civil-rights movement, Bell said.

In the distance on the right, at the corner of Town and High streets, can be seen the distinctive tower of the F. & R. Lazarus department store. There are other distinctive elements of this city of a century ago. Watches were a luxury many people could not afford; the timepieces

were worn only on special occasions. To help keep track of the time, large clocks like the one at the right of the picture stood at many major intersections. To meet the need for information, some of the city’s several newspapers were sold by newsboys (and occasionally newsgirls) like the ones we see to the left of the picture. Most of the people we see in the picture seem reasonably welldressed in suits and ties for the men and fashionable dresses for the ladies. By the standards of our time, they are indeed well-dressed

and — in mostly wool clothing — probably a bit uncomfortable. But by the standards of their day, this was just the common attire of day-to-day life. This was a world that changed a lot during the lives of the people we see here. But for the most part, these people were accustomed to change and had learned to live with it. And perhaps that is just as well, since a lot more change was not all that far away. Ed Lentz writes a history column for ThisWeek.

Middle school students compete in spelling bee By LORI WINCE ThisWeek Community Newspapers New Albany fifth-graders were anxious and excited Jan. 10 as they waited for their turns to attempt to spell a word correctly. Librarian Kerry Cramer prepared the 52 fifth-graders by explaining how the spelling bee works and then had them spell three-letter words in a practice round. Once the practice round was finished, the students had to spell much harder words, such as quiche, talc, loam, fiend and weird. Those five words and seven others eliminated 12 students from the first round of the spelling bee, which was a single-elimination tournament. The fourth-graders competed in the same way Jan. 10 at the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts. In the end, only two fifth-graders and two fourth-graders could advance to the districts spelling bee Feb. 7. The fourth-grade winner was Jonah Fox, with Olivia Martin coming in second. Devin Das was the fifth-grade winner and Swathi Vudatala was the runnerup. Chris Briggs, the 4-5 principal, said three students from each classroom in

During the district spelling bee, Cramer said, the first-round words would be the simplest, with words becoming more difficult as the rounds progress. Words used will be taken from a list that begins at a fourth-grade reading level and increases to a high school level as rounds progress. The winner of the district spelling bee will advance to the central Ohio regional spelling bee March 12, where the student will compete against students from other districts. The location has not yet been announced. The fourth- and fifth-grade spelling bees were operated like the regional spelling bee, with students repeating the word before spelling it to ensure they heard it correctly. The students were not allowed to use a pencil and paper, which is another regional rule. Cramer said the elementary competition helps students build their confidence and public-speaking skills. “They also learn a new vocabulary By Lorrie Cecil/ThisWeek and can connect Latin and English New Albany fifth-graders Anjali Gopalakrishnan (left) and Anora Ignaci react as they become two of the four finalists in words, gaining a more global knowledge of language,” he said. the fifth-grade spelling bee Jan. 10. Boys Basketball

Unselfish play leads to wins for Eagles By CHRIS VOLOSCHUK ThisWeek Community Newspapers

The New Albany High School boys basketball team has several veteran players on its roster, but at the core of its strong start to the season lies something more than just its seven seniors. With a selfless strategy of sharing the workload at both ends of the court, the Eagles have taken a family approach to each game. “I’m proud of the kids,” coach Sam Davis said. “They really care for each

other. We talk about being a part of something bigger than just yourself, and they’ve all taken to that. I’m really happy with how they’ve played.” Behind balanced scoring and stingy defense, the Eagles were 8-0 overall before playing Pickerington North last Tuesday and are 6-0 in the OCC-Capital Division heading into a showdown against visiting Mount Vernon on Friday. The Yellow Jackets improved to 9-0 and 6-0 with a 54-28 win over Big Walnut last Friday. With no player taller than 6-foot-4,

New Albany has encountered some size mismatches. There also isn’t a definitive go-to scorer who can carry the offense every game. But there is a familiarity and high comfort level that has allowed the players to help each other out on the court effectively, erasing disadvantages and making them a formidable lineup to face. “We have a lot of good high school basketball players,” Davis said. “We also have a lot of kids that truly like each other. They’re willing to share the ball and they don’t care who gets the

credit.” Familiarity comes largely from the seven-player senior class, which plays the bulk of the 32 minutes each game. A member of that class, forward Scott McDonald, said that even though some of the players did not always suit up for varsity at the same time until this season, they played together at different times for much of their lives. “We’ve probably been playing together for double-digit years,” McDonald said. “We played together on a travel team in elementary school, then

played together in middle school. Some of us separated in high school as freshmen, but now we’re all back together this year. We’re all real close, even off the court. We hang out together on the weekends, too.” Their camaraderie showed in last Friday’s 55-34 win over a Delaware team that entered the contest with a 72 overall record and has been led by two talented players in forward Matt Bingaya and point guard Mike Wells. Commentary

Buckeye football put area on hold Monday is Martin Luther King Day, but for many central Ohio high school teams, it is just another day at the office. For example, the Pickerington Central girls basketball team will play host to the 14th annual Prep Shootout with 12 varsity and junior varsity teams participating, and several area PAUL hockey teams BATTERSON will be competing in tournaments around the state. During the winter, there are only a few dates on which area high schools try to avoid scheduling any athletic events: Dec. 24, Dec. 25, Dec. 31, Jan. 1 and whatever day the Ohio State football team plays its bowl game. When it was announced Ohio State would play Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 4, area high schools scrambled to move athletic events to Jan. 3 or Jan. 5 or to earlier in the day on Jan. 4 to avoid conflict with the 8:30 p.m. kickoff. “It’s a little bit weird I suppose, but this is a Buckeye town,” said Worthington Kilbourne girls basketball coach Steve Palmer, whose team moved its game with Central Crossing from Jan. 4 to Jan. 3. “There are no professional sports in this town ... except for the Blue Jackets. Ohio State football is numero uno.” Kilbourne was one of 60 girls and boys basketball teams in the area that moved games from Jan. 4 to Jan. 3. In addition, 26 boys and 32 girls basketball games, including all City League contests, were moved up to 6:30 p.m. or earlier on Jan. 4 so that fans could get home to watch the Buckeyes. For most area high schools, the move was the result of a purely economical equation: Ohio State + bowl game = empty seats. “Tuesday games usually have a low gate, but if we would have played (at the same time as the Sugar Bowl), it wouldn’t have been good,” said Olentangy Liberty athletics director Tom Gerhardt, who moved the Patriots’ boys and girls basketball games with Dublin Scioto from Jan. 4 to Jan. 3. Westerville North athletics director Jeff Will opted to keep the boys basketball team’s showdown with Westerville South on Jan. 4 but moved the start time to 5:45 p.m. Even though the game went to overtime, with South winning 77-73, Will was home in time to watch the kickoff for the Sugar Bowl. “Things went very, very smoothly for us,” Will said. “The day after we made the time change, we had officials in place and I didn’t notice much of a difference in the attendance.” Not every team changed its schedule to match Ohio State’s. Northridge athletics director Wayne Howard kept the boys basketball team’s tipoff with

Wrestling

First place on line in OCC-Capital dual By KURTIS ADAMS ThisWeek Community Newspapers

The New Albany High School wrestling team is undefeated in the OCC-Capital Division entering dual matches against Hilliard Bradley and Mount Vernon today at Olentangy Orange. “We’re off to a good start,” coach Marc Cofer said. “Now we’ve got to keep it going.” The Eagles dropped both duals a year ago as they went 4-3 in the league to share third place with Bradley and Big Walnut, behind Orange (7-0) and Mount Vernon (6-1). They lost 44-24 to Bradley and 3724 to Mount Vernon.

“Those are two pretty tough teams,” Cofer said. “Bradley’s real solid and they should contend for the championship. Mount Vernon’s a little younger than last year, but I know they’ve always got some good kids.” Bradley, a second-year school, had only four wrestlers with varsity experience last season under veteran coach John Riggs. However, the Jaguars returned six Division II district qualifiers this year, including state-qualifier Andrew Higgins (152 pounds) and state-alternate Sam Riggs (160). The Jaguars and Orange also are 20 in the OCC-Capital. “We need to build on our experience,” coach Riggs said.

Now that the league duals are under way, Cofer said the emphasis in practice has changed. “I’m always telling the kids, ‘Get pins and don’t get pinned,’” he said. “That’s the big key in dual meets. I tell them that every time we go out. “Another big thing in the duals is that you have to win the close matches, too. We were able to do that in our first two duals.” The Eagles opened their league schedule by defeating Big Walnut 43-23 and Delaware 45-21 at home on Jan. 6, earning three pins in each match. The Vikings fell to 5-3 overall with a 54-47 loss to Worthington Christian last Saturday and were third in the MSL-Ohio before last Tuesday at 2-2, behind Heath (4-0), Granville (31) and Newark Catholic (3-1). “Even though we’ve beaten Granville (51-46 last Friday), I would say Heath and Granville are the two teams to beat right now,” coach Chris Jones said. “We’re right there in the middle of the pack with a couple other teams.” Against Worthington Christian, Academy fell behind 48-37 By Steve Friend/ThisWeek By Andrea Kjerrumgaard/ThisWeek midway through the final quarAcademy’s Daniel Aronowitz goes up for a shot as Matt Rickly of ter before cutting its deficit to Erin Simmons of Academy tries to maneuver past Bexley’s Bailey Worthington Christian defends during the visiting Vikings’ 54-47

Wrestling

Rapid weight loss a concern for competitors By JEREMY STEWART ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Wrestling is different from other high school sports. If an athlete doesn’t make weight, he doesn’t compete. It is the only team sport in which weight, more than skill, determines a position. That’s why one of the most important times on competition day is the weigh-in. The NCAA and high school athletics associations across the country have tried to stamp out the practice of rapid weight loss since collegiate wrestlers Billy Jack Saylor, Joseph LaRosa and Jeff Reese died trying to make weight in 1997. The OHSAA has been heavily involved in the weigh-in process since the 2006-07 wrestling season. Coaches interviewed by ThisWeek unanimously agreed the OHSAA’s weight certification program has been a positive, but they said there are questions about its effectiveness and its fairness to athletes who also compete in a fall sport. “I think the idea of the (program) is good, but it doesn’t eliminate the severe weight cutting,” Reynoldsburg coach Jared Ball said. “They crash early. The idea now is to be at their weight at the beginning (of the season).” Each of the college wrestling deaths came after a period of extreme weight loss. Reese was trying to get down to the 150-pound weight class and had lost a reported 17 pounds in three days. Severely dehydrated, the Michigan wrestler died in the locker room at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor as he tried to weigh-in. Saylor, a Campbell University wrestler, and LaRosa, who competed at Wisconsin-La Crosse, died under similar circumstances. The OHSAA’s weight certification program attempts to eliminate rapid weight loss by establishing a minimum weight at which a wrestler can compete during the season. The minimum weight, called the “alpha weight,” takes into account hydration level and bodyfat percentage. Teams typically spend an afternoon during the preseason getting the entire roster certified. Wrestlers undergo a

Hilliard Davidson senior Nolan Gill (right) battles Mark Martin of Lakewood St. Edward in a first-round match at 135 pounds during the Division I state tournament last season. Gill was listed at 174 pounds as a football player for the Wildcats last fall and his wrestling season was delayed until he could lose weight in order to compete at 140 pounds.

urinalysis to prove they are not dehydrated, and once adequate hydration is established, they have their body-fat percentage determined. If a male wrestler’s body fat is 7 percent or less (12 percent or less for females), he is not allowed to wrestle at a weight class lower than his weight at the time of certification. Wrestlers with more than 7 percent body fat are allowed to lose weight, but only in small weekly amounts determined by the OHSAA’s weight-loss formula. “The only guarantee that you’ll be allowed to wrestle at a certain weight is if you weigh in at that weight hydrated,” Ready coach Chance Van Gundy said. “If you’re hydrated at 140 (pounds) with 7 percent body fat, you’ll be able to wrestle 140. But if you weigh 140.1, you have to wrestle up.” Since this formula determines where athletes can wrestle once the season starts, Van Gundy meets with prospective team members early in the fall to

determine where they might fit in the lineup once the season begins. This helps wrestlers establish a goal weight and they can use the fall to trim down before getting certified, unless they’re playing a fall sport. Getting in shape for wrestling is especially difficult for football players. At the heavier weights, football and wrestling have some shared benefits, but most of the weight classes would be considered small for football players. No one knows the difference in conditioning philosophy like Jason Hackett, a football player and state champion wrestler for Hamilton Township who graduated in 2003. “Football coaches push size to have bigger, stronger kids,” said Hackett, who now coaches at Hamilton Township’s middle and high schools. “I’d like to see (the hydration test) in the middle of the season. They’ll lose that weight just because they work that hard (in wrestling practice). I loved football

The Eagles employed a mix of man-to-man and zone defense against the Pacers, denying open shots and helping each other close driving lanes. Because of the constant five-man effort on defense, Wells and Bingaya were held to a combined 25 points on 7-for-19 shooting. “We all pick each other up,” McDonald said. “On defense, too, if someone gets beat (Davis) always tells us to play help-side defense. We always try to help each other out.” The team-first concept also worked on the offensive end, www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com

where New Albany outscored the Pacers 46-24 over the final three quarters and had eight players score, led by Nick Sosh with 24 points. But in keeping with the sense of family, Sosh credited his teammates for much of his performance. “We moved the ball (on offense), the whole team,” Sosh said. “We moved it consistently, getting it down low and then getting it back out, which got open shots for the people on the outside. I was lucky to get those shots and hit them.”

and wrestling, but they’re different types of conditioning.” In 2002, Hackett won a Division II state wrestling championship at 171 pounds after he helped the football team make the playoffs. Had the hydration test been in place at that time, Hackett said he wouldn’t have been able to compete at 171. He ended the football season at 205 pounds and needed until January to lose the weight. According to the rules at the time, he had to wrestle half of his matches at his lowest weight to be eligible for the postseason. “It took a lot out of me,” Hackett said of losing the weight. “I really do like how the hydration test is set up. The way I look at it, you might have to bump up a weight, but you’re going to need that strength. You can’t cut weight to where you’re not going to be able to step on the mat.” Hackett also said finding the proper weight class is important. He said moving down in weight can give a www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com

wrestler an advantage, because he should have a larger frame and stronger muscles than a competitor who is naturally smaller. Hackett’s success at 171 pounds earned him a scholarship to Arizona State. The need for some to lose weight had some like Pickerington Central coach Jason Allen calling for a later start to the wrestling season. Olentangy coach Matt Hammons wanted to level the playing field by having the OHSAA use the same assessor to run the weight certification tests. Perhaps no school in the area deals with the dichotomy of football and wrestling conditioning like Hilliard Davidson. In wrestling, Davidson won the Division I district championship last season and was chosen to represent the Central District at the state duals on Jan. 9. However, three of Davidson’s four state qualifiers last year were members of the football team, which won the Division I state championship in 2009 and made it to a state semifinal this past fall. Had Davidson won its state football semifinal on Nov. 27, wrestling state qualifiers Chase Delande, Nolan Gill and Alex Mickley would have been playing football on Dec. 4, the same day that the wrestling team opened its season. Because he played football at a lighter weight, Delande was able to join the wrestling team for the opener on Dec. 4, but Gill and Mickley didn’t make their debuts until Dec. 28. Coach Dominic DiSabato had to put off filing weight certifications until Gill and Mickley were able to reach their target weights. Not only did the pair miss nearly a month of the season, but Davidson also had to postpone a Dec. 16 dual with West Jefferson until Jan. 26. Mickley was listed at 170 pounds on the football roster and is wrestling at 152. Gill was listed at 174 for football and is competing at 140 for wrestling. “My first day back I lost like five pounds, and then the next day it was another five pounds,” Mickley said Dec. 16. “Then the next day I would eat the littlest thing and be right back up. Last week was tough, but this week the weight really started dropping.”

Zach Ratcliff led the Vikings with 14 points, followed by Daniel Aronowitz with 11 points and Kyle Turner with 10. “We found something late in the game that allowed us to at least give us a shot toward the end, but overall we didn’t come with the same kind of fire and intensity that we had (last Friday against Granville), and that’s the mark of a young, inexperienced team,â€? Jones said. Jones said his team was done in by costly turnovers, a lack of rebounding in the first half and too many fouls. Worthington Christian went 22 of 35 from the free throw line and Academy made four of nine. “We just have to put the Worthington Christian game behind us and focus on the next one,â€? junior guard Tim Eldridge said. “That’s going to be the defining thing of our season — if we can get back up after a step back and make sure that we keep getting better and keep trying to win games.â€? Through eight games, Eldridge was leading the team in scoring, averaging 12.8 points, followed by Ratcliff (12.3). Ratcliff was leading the team in rebounding, averaging 7.5. •The girls basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end with a 45-38 loss to Bexley last Saturday. Erin Simmons led the Vikings with 14 points. “We’re playing some good basketball right now,â€? coach Heather

Gepper said. “(Last Saturday), we played three solid quarters and then let that fourth quarter kind of slip away from us. We’ve been playing some really nice games. I’m really happy with how the girls are playing right now.â€? Academy is 3-3 in the MSLOhio, tied with Bexley for third behind Granville (5-1) and Licking Valley (4-2). The Vikings play Granville on Jan. 20 and 28. “Granville is pretty much on top right now,â€? Gepper said. “Aside from Granville, everybody else is pretty dead even. We have the potential to hang around in every game.â€? •The bowling teams continue to make progress in their first

BATTERSON Continued from page B1 Columbus Academy at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 4. Howard had a television near the concession stand tuned into the Sugar Bowl. “With the financial problems we have at Northridge, every dime counts and I was worried we were going to lose out on admissions, Howard said. “The officials kept asking me if we were sure we were going to have it then and that we weren’t going to move it up a couple of hours. However, our fans were very loyal and made it to the game. This season was not the first time Ohio State football altered

the schedules of area high school teams. The 2002 national championship, in which the Buckeyes beat the Miami Hurricanes 3124 in double overtime, nearly shut down all central Ohio sports and, in 2006, the Division III football playoff game between New Albany and DeSales and the Division II football playoff game between Big Walnut and Kettering Alter were moved to noon to avoid a conflict with the game between No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Michigan at 3:30 p.m. However, only the Ohio State football team yields that type of power.
