Race to the January luncheon We are welcoming Eric Mauk of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing to be our speaker at our Jan. 21 luncheon at Heritage Golf Club, 3525 Heritage Club Drive, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Mauk joined the racing team in April 2001 and is responsible for the public relations and communications needs of the team across all of its programs, as well as all of the production of the team’s press releases and written publications, social media and website platforms.

It was just announced in midDecember that Mike Lanigan is now a co-owner along with Bobby Rahal and David Letterman, hence the name change of the company.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, based in Hilliard, Ohio and co-owned by three-time IndyCar

Champion and 1986 Indianapolis 500 winner Bobby Rahal, CBS Late Show host David Letterman, and Mi-Jack Products co-owner Mike Lanigan has been competing for nearly two decades, compiling 22 victories, 31 poles and two series championships (1992, 2010) as well as claiming an Indianapolis 500 victory (Buddy Rice in 2004). In 2009 the team joined BMW of North America to campaign the new BMW M3 in the American Le Mans Series, and in 2010 won both the Manufacturer and Team Championships in the GT category.

We welcome everyone to attend our luncheons as they are open to the public. Reservations need to be made by Tuesday, Jan. 18. The cost is $17 for chamber members and $20 for the public.

Board elects leadership for 2011 At its December board meeting, the board of directors elected the executive committee for the Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce.

Heather Keck was elected to serve another term as the chair of the board for 2011. Keck is a managing partner with the law firm Bowen & Keck, Attorneys at Law, a full-service firm whose legal focus is on

small business transactions, criminal and traffic defense, and appellate work. She is a past prosecuting attorney and small business owner.

Rich Capuano was re-elected treasurer.

Capuano is the president/CEO of Credit Union of Ohio.

The Most Involved Volunteer is an individual who believes in the role of the chamber both personally and professionally, working behind the scenes to forward the activities of the chamber.

Chair’s perspective

Thanking those who made 2010 successes happen Sometimes, a new year is a time to look forward and make plans for the year to come … and sometimes it’s a time to look back and reflect on what you’ve accomplished and thank the people that helped you get there.

Now, I know you’re busy. And a new year means new resolutions and new plans and new and exciting goals.

However, if you could set a timer for 15 minutes – just 15 minutes – and reflect on 2010, I think you’ll be amazed at all you did accomplish. Even more than that – I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much help you had along the way.

I did just that thinking about how our Chamber has performed for its members this past year. We were able to accomplish quite a bit and we did so with the help of so many.

Some tips on how to win over difficult or combative customers Eventually, all small business owners are faced with a customer who’s ready for conversational battle. Sometimes there is good reason for these combative conversations; sometimes there isn’t. Either way, when faced with this situation, you might get the urge to fight back. Or you might try to submit or adhere to every demand of the other person. Neither of these options is a good idea. Instead, the best way to extinguish a fiery conversation is to be assertive. To do this you need to listen up, pace yourself, and then take the lead.

Listen up. In a poker game, the player who bets last has a big advantage because he or she gets to hear the other bets first.

Using the extra information, he or she can make better decisions. This principle is

the same for conversations, especially difficult ones. Always let difficult customers speak first so you can use what they tell you to craft the right response.

Pace yourself. Mirror the customer’s body language, tone of voice, and talking speed. This is known as pacing. Don’t duplicate the behavior, but strive to create similarities. Take into consideration gestures, posture, hand positioning, and rhythm of speech. If mirrored smoothly, it will create an instant connection. If applicable, use a phrase such as: "If I were you, I would feel the same way."

Take the lead. Once you have established a rapport, you can start to move the conversation where you want it to go.

Slowly bring your tone, body language,

and breathing into a calmer, more relaxed condition and the customer will follow.

Lead customers out of their current emotional state by putting their feelings in the past with statements such as: “So you were mad when ….”

Always strive to achieve a state of cooperation in the customer relationship. No matter how difficult a customer is being, you have been approached because he or she believes you can help.

By using the listening, pacing, and leading method, you can bring the customer to a position where solutions are much more easily realized.

Members can take advantage of lower electricity costs The Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce can now save you money on your electrical costs!

As we continue to look at ways to save you money, we have entered into an agreement with Volunteer Energy, an energy provider in Pickerington.

Volunteer Energy has teamed up with First Energy Solutions

of Akron to sell electricity at a discount to Hilliard Chamber members.

Eligible companies will pay from 6.35 cents to 7.29 cents per kilowatt-hour, which Volunteer estimates is 10 – 40% less than AEP charges most local businificant dollars. the recent recession has led to nesses.

Why you should be a The ABCs of growing member of your local your business in 2011 chamber of commerce Are you a member of your local chamber of commerce? If not, you should be.

In case you think I’m being nosy and/or presumptuous, I’ve been a member of mine since 1977.

Community growth only happens when constituent groups, like business, politics, education, the arts, sports, neighborhoods, etc., have a place to state their interests, work out their differences and pull together for the common good.

Your local chamber of commerce is the only organization in your community that can create the venue where discussions can be conducted that cut across all of the emotional and ideological boundaries that get erected over time in a community.

“What’s the chamber ever done for me?” you might ask.

Well, the chamber IS you.

Your local chamber isn’t part of the local government; it’s a private non-profit organization founded and nurtured by local leaders, just

like you.

There are hired chamber professionals who staff the office and coordinate the work, but most of what happens in your chamber is attributed to a local citizen who volunteers to help the chamber – and, therefore, the community and marketplace – be

all it can be.

To paraphrase a great American, ask not what your chamber can do for you, but rather, what you can do for your chamber.

I believe being a chamber member is the most important investment I make in my community. And as far as the financial commitment is concerned, I think you’ll be surprised, maybe shocked, at how small it is.

• Assess your website. Could it use a fresh layout? Are you reaching the people you want?

Check your analytics to see what search terms people are using to find your site, and determine whether your search engine optimization strategy is working. Adapt your site to be mobilefriendly, so your potential customers can find you at their convenience. Don’t have a website? Get one.

• Buy into blogging. A company blog attached to your website can improve your search engine ranking rapidly, if you update regularly. Assemble a team of bright, innovative associates and assign each person one post every week or 10 days. Aim to have a new post up at least 2-3 times each week. Don’t worry about length – write

what’s on your mind with the goal of helping or informing people.

• Connect with your customers. Take a renewed look at where your customers can be found.

Do they spend a lot of time online? Or are they face-to-face people? Your customers’ habits and preferences might have changed since you last checked. Find out what conferences or trade shows your customers plan to attend in the next year. Ask them what magazines, websites and blogs they read regularly, and look to those publications for inspiration. Respond to each comment on your company blog and Facebook page, and promote your posts using the social media tools your customers and prospects use most.

Make 2011 the year you step outside your comfort zone, to explore new ways of reaching your target customers.
