Pair of Viking Standouts Inducted into Athletic Hall of Fame

Amy Marotta Lester ’04 and Dr. Ben Bring ’03 were inducted into Columbus Academy’s Athletic Hall of Fame on October 5, 2024, during Alumni Weekend activities that included them being recognized at halftime of a varsity football win over Bexley.

Amy earned All-American honors in both field hockey and lacrosse at Academy before playing field hockey on a full scholarship at the University of Virginia. She returned to CA as a middle school assistant coach in field hockey for seven season and lacrosse for six seasons in addition to spending three school years as a lower school associate teacher.

“We were all so fortunate to have had her as a player, student and coach,” stated her former field hockey and lacrosse head coach Anne Horton in her introduction of Amy. “She’s been a pivotal part of this community… No matter what hat she was wearing, I knew we could always count on her to make a difference.”

In her acceptance speech, Amy thanked her family, coaches, teammates, friends and teachers for all of their support over the years.

“What I look forward to most about this day is the opportunity to publicly and loudly over this microphone thank those near and dear to my heart,” Amy said. “All my memories of sports at Academy envelop these people and what we accomplished together.”

Ben was an all-league and all-district performer in soccer, basketball and track & field at Academy. He helped win two district titles in soccer, was the Team MVP in basketball and earned All-Ohio honors in the 4x800 relay during his senior track season. He went on to play football at Denison University and currently serves as team doctor for our athletic teams.

“Ben has an unwavering confidence about him,” said Dean Bring ’01 while introducing his younger brother during the induction ceremony. “He is as confident a person that you’ll ever meet, in a good way, and he brings that entire confidence to everything he does… And with that comes an incredible commitment to excellence. Lastly, he does things the right way with integrity.”

In his acceptance speech, Ben thanked and shared stories about the legendary coaches and teachers he had at Academy. He also acknowledged retired athletic trainer Kim Stercula and the impact of having his wife Miranda (Leickly) Bring ’03 – a lower school teacher since 2008 –and their children Blaine and Aly currently at the school.

“Being able to be part of the Academy has been truly an honor and a blessing, and it’s really made me the person that I am today,” Ben stated. “And I’m really fortunate that my kids get to live the Academy experience here, too… Being as deeply woven into the community here as we have been has really just been such a blessing. There’s nothing more valuable than when you get to see your kids grow up and live that life, too, so I’m forever grateful for those experiences.”

Amy and Ben were the 49th and 50th inductees, respectively, into Columbus Academy’s Athletic Hall of Fame, which recognizes and honors former student-athletes, coaches and other individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the athletic program at Columbus Academy, and who have brought honor to the school through their athletic achievements.

Athletic Facilities

Hondros Field

After full funding from John and Linda Hondros and their children Morgan, Cody ’00, Kelly ’06 and Hobie ’08, the Columbus Academy board of trustees voted to rename the stadium Hondros Field. A $1.25 million project completed by TurfFields in August 2014 replaced the stadium grass field with state-of-the-art artificial turf primarily used for football, lacrosse and soccer. The Hondros family’s gift encouraged several other Academy families to give anonymously in order to fund a second all-weather field, which was installed on the west side of campus next to the existing field hockey and lacrosse area out at Carlin Fields. As a result, Columbus Academy became one of the few Central Ohio schools to have two all-weather surfaces for practices and competitions. Hondros Field has since also served as a host site for several state tournaments during the fall and spring seasons. Hondros Field was officially dedicated on Sept. 5, 2014, at halftime of the Viking football game. The track surrounding the field, which was resurfaced in spring 2018, was also retained in memory of Mike Marsh.

Carlin Fields

Dedicated in October 2016 in honor and memory of alumnus David P. Carlin ’56, Carlin Fields plays host to Viking field hockey and tennis, and also contains several multipurporse fields used for lacrosse and other sports for games, practice and various activities on campus. David was a Board member and generous Academy benefactor as well as the driving force behind obtaining that property in the mid-1980s. His foresight into the potential importance of that additional space for the school’s future use is further testament to his love and devotion to Columbus Academy. David’s widow and other members of the Carlin Family (pictured) were on hand for the dedication and unveiling of the new archway welcoming Viking families and guests to the western portion of campus.

James W. Stahl Field

Home field for the Viking baseball team, James W. Stahl Field was named after Academy’s legendary baseball coach. In his 22 years at the helm of the Viking baseball program, Stahl compiled over 260 wins and won the Class A state title in 1982. A member of the CA and Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Stahl also led the Vikings to state runner-up honors in 1981 and the 1980 state semifinals. Coach Stahl also steered the program to a regional final and a pair of district finals over his tenure. In August 2022, Stahl Field underwent renovations including the installation of a high-performance artificial turf infield, new dugouts and a permanent outfield fence. The Vikings played their first game on the new turf field on April 4, 2023, and won 16-1 over Whitehall-Yearling HS.

“The Mack” Gym

Named in honor of Columbus Academy’s Headmaster from 1997-2013, The John Mackenzie Gymnasium, nicknamed The Mack, is the home court of the Viking boys and girls basketball teams, as well as the volleyball team. During his 16 years at the helm, John Mackenzie led CA through a period of growth and many accomplishments, including extensive enhancements to the curriculum, increased enrollment, aesthetic improvements to campus, the implementation of successful programs in the areas of diversity, technology, ethics and character, and creating a sense of community for all.

Jones Gym

The Jones Gym primarily serves our middle school basketball and volleyball teams, while also providing ample indoor practice space for outdoor sports during times of inclement weather throughout the fall and spring seasons. The gym is equipped with six basketball hoops, a full-size court and bleacher-style seating.

Academy Swimming Pool

Columbus Academy’s swimming pool is the official practice and competition site for the Viking swim teams. Several meets are held at the site throughout each season, including within the league, while also being used for competition throughout the year by the Greater Columbus Swim Team of Ohio.

Golf Putting Green and Short Game Practice Area

The golf putting green and practice area was made possible by the generous support of Jason and Heidi Crowl, with additional support from several Columbus Academy alumni who played golf for the Vikings. This state-of-the-art putting green and chipping area located at Carlin Fields provides practice opportunities for our boys and girls Middle and Upper School golf programs to refine their craft around the green when competing on the course. It also has already given our younger students the ability to learn the game of golf through instruction in P.E. classes and with the Youth Sports program.

Fieldhouse

Discussions about an indoor fieldhouse had been taking place for years, but the much-needed project became a reality when a group of Columbus Academy families came together to offer a significant portion of the funding, thus relieving the schoolfrom undertaking a major philanthropic campaign. Within the fieldhouse’s 24,000 square feet –which opened in January 2020 – are 18 basketball hoops suspended from the ceiling, a rock climbing wall next to stairs that lead up to a mezzanine, a conference room and six offices for coaches and staff. The flooring is a top-of-the-line Mondo surface that contains three regulation basketball courts used for practices, games, fitness training and PE classes. In addition, the existing locker rooms were overhauled and extra ones were added to accommodate all of our teams and to provide ample space for hosting multiple sporting events at the same time.

Fitness Center

The Fitness Center has evolved from what was once a typical weight room where teams workout, to a training area open to all students, faculty and staff. Racks in the facility have been upgraded with state-of-the-art lifting equipment, along with more floor space and various aerobic machines. These improvements have provided the opportunity for our strength and conditioning program to grow and continue to set the path for a fit and healthy lifestyle for students of all ages.
