KRISTEN COX
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, UTAH GOVERNOR’S OFFICE OF MANAGEMENT AND BUDGET
VISIONARY LEADERSHIP AWARD
The Visionary Leadership award recognizes those who have made a significant impact in the community that improves the lives of individuals with disabilities. In the last four years, Kristen has provided Columbus with invaluable guidance and support in our request for legislative appropriations for the Hub of Opportunity affordable housing project. As a representative of Governor Herbert’s office, Kristen worked within the Executive branch to ensure the most recent Hub appropriation was included in the Governor’s budget. Kristen has made tremendous contributions within state government with her Theory of Constraints (TOC) approach to more effective state operational performance and budget practices. Columbus, as well as many other community organizations supported by the State of Utah, benefit directly and indirectly from this kind of fiscal and operational influence. As co-author of the book “Stop Decorating the Fish,” she has also shared sound problem-solving strategies far beyond the state. Kristen has donated all net proceeds of this book to the National Federation of the Blind.

This award honors a government representative or organization that has supported the efforts of Columbus to promote workforce development and self-sufficiency for individuals with disabilities. Senator Daniel Hemmert sponsored a $1 million appropriation for the Columbus Hub of Opportunity that demonstrated how public/private partnerships offer successful, innovative solutions to address affordable housing and workforce development. As of 2019, the State Legislature has appropriated $1.75 million to this $46 million project. The Hub of Opportunity will open early Spring 2020, and we are currently on schedule and on budget with the project. Many people have worked in collaboration to make this dream a reality, and we are grateful for Senator Hemmert’s contributions in this effort. The Hub will add inventory to the significant affordable housing needed in our community. More importantly, individuals with disabilities will have an unprecedented choice available to them—fully accessible, affordable housing options in a vibrant, urban neighborhood.

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE AWARD
The Social Enterprise Award honors individuals and/or organizations in the community that have supported creative, innovative efforts that have resulted in meaningful advances for individuals with disabilities. Salt Lake City Housing and Neighborhood Development (HAND) Division—with the support of the Mayor’s office and the Salt Lake City Council—continues to collaborate with community agencies in a way that has far-reaching impact for all citizens, especially those with disabilities. In particular, HAND distributed a number of Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) to Columbus that have allowed us to create accessible work environments and employment opportunities for some of the most severe disabilities. The HAND staff should also be commended for their outreach efforts to include community partners to contribute their feedback in the Salt Lake City Consolidated Plan process. They exemplify how collaboration and strategic planning allows us to come together to better understand and plan for the needs of our community.
BUSINESS PARTNER OF THE YEAR AWARD
This award honors a company that has partnered with Columbus to promote employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities within the business community. MOD Pizza is a champion in employing and training people with disabilities. They have successfully employed eight Columbus Supported Employment clients throughout the valley. At MOD Pizza, Columbus clients are offered the opportunity to learn tasks that are out of the norm of the typical food service placement. The culture at MOD Pizza is that of inclusivity, equality, and embracing each employee’s individuality and strengths. Through patience and diligence from supervisors and co-workers, they are learning tasks that they did not think they would be capable of learning. They are learning to flourish in a fast-paced work environment, which builds the self-confidence needed to succeed in their employment journey.

KELLY BERTOCH SANTA CLAUS
LEGACY SERVICE AWARD
This award honors an individual or organization that has gone above and beyond in service to Columbus, exemplifying the gift of giving and compassion for individuals with disabilities. Kelly Bertoch has been gracing us with his presence as his Santa Claus persona for over 30 years. Each year in December, Columbus hosts a client Christmas party at the Red Lion Hotel for over 150 clients and their family members. The party includes dinner, dancing, and a special gift from Santa. Kelly has generously contributed his time, energy and love every year to come visit the clients dressed in full-Santa Claus gear while letting all clients — big or small — sit on his lap and tell him their Christmas wishes. He provides our clients with laughter, smiles, and hope.

However, we do know that with some support and training, individuals with disabilities can make incredible contributions to their community, the workplace, and their families.

ALEXIS CRUZ Alexis has been recognized as a Workplace Hero because she has demonstrated strength, determination, and resilience through her work. Her excellent work ethic, eye for detail, willingness to learn, and creativity are truly inspiring. Alexis recently became a member of the Columbus Board of Directors, and we look forward to her input and unique viewpoint, particularly as we expand our NextWork Program. Alexis is well-loved at Jared, where her work family values her and continues to give her opportunities to grow and learn. MIKE KREBS Mike Krebs is being honored because he has demonstrated exceptional work skills and a positive impact in the workplace. He is appreciated for the 14 years he has worked for Columbus and his willingness to do whatever is needed. Mike’s help with the shred trucks, the workflow, and making sure areas are tidy and clean are an invaluable asset to the Columbus Secure Shred business. Mike is highly appreciated for his hard work and his drive to get better at everything he does. He is valued as a friend to his colleagues and has contributed to the workplace through his positive attitude and his ability to motivate coworkers and friends. Mike truly makes Columbus Secure Shredding stronger. CIERRA SMITH Cierra Smith has demonstrated exceptional work skills and a positive impact in her workplace. Her commitment to her job at WinCo Foods is valued not only by her employer but by her staff as well. Her exemplary work ethic and positive attitude have made her stand out in the WinCo WInS program. Cierra’s supervisors and co-workers value her daily contributions to the success of their department, and see her making tremendous growth within the company.
